- 0:00Speaker 1: Episode 5, Guarding the Gate, Navigating Social Triggers, and Preventing Relapse.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello and welcome back to The Smoke-Free Life. I am
- 0:10Speaker 1: thrilled you are here with me for Episode 5. Today,
- 0:15Speaker 1: we are addressing a critical phase of quitting, navigating social environments,
- 0:21Speaker 1: handling social drinking triggers, and preventing relapse. Many individuals successfully
- 0:27Speaker 1: navigate the first two or three weeks of quitting while
- 0:31Speaker 1: staying at home or maintaining a quiet routine. However, the
- 0:36Speaker 1: true test arrives when they attend a social gathering, a
- 0:40Speaker 1: weekend dinner party, or a social evening with friends who smoke,
- 0:45Speaker 1: accompanied by alcohol. Alcohol lowers prefrontal cortex inhibition and impairs
- 0:51Speaker 1: impulse control. In social settings, seeing others smoke combined with
- 0:57Speaker 1: drinks creates a powerful psychological temptation that catches many recent
- 1:04Speaker 1: quitters off guard. To protect your smoke-free status, you must
- 1:09Speaker 1: anticipate social triggers and establish clear boundaries. Let us build
- 1:14Speaker 1: a foolproof social protection and relapse prevention framework. Step one
- 1:21Speaker 1: is planning ahead for social gatherings. Before attending an event
- 1:25Speaker 1: where people will smoke or drink, mentally rehearse the evening.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Decide in advance what non-alcoholic or alternative beverage you will
- 1:35Speaker 1: hold in your hand. Practice your polite, confident response if
- 1:40Speaker 1: someone offer, S you a cigarette, no thank you, I
- 1:44Speaker 1: am a non-smoker, and I feel incredible. Rehearsing your response
- 1:49Speaker 1: builds neural confidence. Step two is avoiding the single puff trap.
- 1:56Speaker 1: This is the single most common cause of relapse after
- 1:59Speaker 1: weeks of successful quitting. After three weeks smoke-free, an individual
- 2:05Speaker 1: attends a party, has a few drinks, and thinks, I
- 2:09Speaker 1: have beaten the addiction now. I can safely enjoy just
- 2:13Speaker 1: one single cigarette with my friends to celebrate. Within 24
- 2:18Speaker 1: hours of taking that single puff, the physical nicotine receptors
- 2:23Speaker 1: in the brain reawaken instantly, triggering a massive W, ave
- 2:28Speaker 1: of cravings, and plunging the person right back into full
- 2:32Speaker 1: daily smoking. Treat nicotine like a severe allergy. A former
- 2:39Speaker 1: alcoholic does not take just one sip of whiskey to celebrate.
- 2:44Speaker 1: A nonsmoker does not take just one puff of a cigarette.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Absolute zero tolerance protects your freedom. Step three is applying
- 2:55Speaker 1: the never-miss-twice rule of recovery. If you experience a slip-up,
- 3:00Speaker 1: do not adopt an all-or-nothing mindset and surrender to total relapse.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Forgive yourself instantly, Examine what social trigger caused the slip
- 3:12Speaker 1: and return immediately to your non-smoker identity. By planning faux,
- 3:17Speaker 1: our social events, avoiding the single puff trap, and enforcing
- 3:22Speaker 1: absolute zero tolerance, you protect your progress with ironclad resilience.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Thank you for being here for Episode 5. Rehearse your
- 3:32Speaker 1: non-smoker response for your next social event today. In our
- 3:37Speaker 1: sixth and final episode, we will synthesize these principles to
- 3:41Speaker 1: celebrate your lifelong smoke-free future. See you there.
