- 0:00Speaker 1: Speakin', Oh Christmas. Breezes blowin' middle and brisk snowflakes through
- 0:06Speaker 1: the air, a whisk fallin' kind of soft and light,
- 0:10Speaker 1: not enough to make things white, but just sorder siftin'
- 0:14Speaker 1: down so as to cover up the brown of the
- 0:17Speaker 1: dark world's rugged ways and make things look like Holidays.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Not smoothed over, but just specked sorder, strainin' for effect,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and not quite a gettin through what it started in
- 0:31Speaker 1: to do. Mercy sakes, it does seem queer. Christmas Day
- 0:36Speaker 1: is most nigh here. Somehow, it don't seem to me
- 0:40Speaker 1: Christmas like it used to be Christmas, with its ice
- 0:44Speaker 1: and snow, Christmas of the long ago. You could feel
- 0:49Speaker 1: its stir and hum weeks and weeks before it come.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Something in the atmosphere told you when the day was near,
- 0:58Speaker 1: didn't need no almanacs. That was one of nature's facts.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Every cottage decked out gay cedar wreaths and holly spray,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and the stores how they were dressed tinsel tell you
- 1:13Speaker 1: couldn't rest every winder fixed up pat candy canes and
- 1:18Speaker 1: things like that. Noah's arks and guns and dolls and
- 1:23Speaker 1: all kinds of folderols, then with frosty bells a chime
- 1:29Speaker 1: slidin down the hills a time right amidst the fun
- 1:33Speaker 1: and din Christmas come a bustlin' in raised his cheery
- 1:38Speaker 1: voice to call out a welcome to us. All hail
- 1:42Speaker 1: and hardy, strong and bluff. That was Christmas, sure enough.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Snow knee deep and coast and fine frozen mill ponds,
- 1:53Speaker 1: all ashine seemin jest to lay and wait, beggin you
- 1:58Speaker 1: to come and skate, and you'd get your gal and
- 2:01Speaker 1: go stumpin' cheerily through the snow, feelin pleased and scared
- 2:06Speaker 1: and warm because she had a holt your arm. Why
- 2:11Speaker 1: when Christmas come in, we spent the whole glad day
- 2:15Speaker 1: in glee, having fun and feast and high and some
- 2:19Speaker 1: courtin on the sly bursting in some neighbor's door. And
- 2:23Speaker 1: then suddenly, before he could give his voice a lift,
- 2:28Speaker 1: yelling at him Christmas gift. Now, sich, things are never heard.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Merry Christmas is the word, but it's only change a
- 2:37Speaker 1: name and means given just the same. There's too many
- 2:42Speaker 1: new styled ways now about the holidays. I'd just like
- 2:47Speaker 1: once more to see Christmas like it used to be,
