- 0:41Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife.
- 0:45The Doctor Who commentary podcast Mr. Fraser Gregory.
- 0:50Now, listen, I've got something I got to say to you before we
- 0:53even start anything. Okay, I'll have taken your name
- 0:58in vain on so many podcasts likely on so many tweets and
- 1:02Facebook posts. I think people are starting to
- 1:05think I do love you very much. So, this is just my child's to
- 1:11say. At the beginning of what would
- 1:13probably be the apotheosis of our commentary podcasts.
- 1:19I absolutely love you. Welcome back to hamster or a
- 1:22blunt penknife. Oh, well, I love you right back.
- 1:24My friend, thank you again for having me back on.
- 1:27It's so nice to talk to you again.
- 1:29But now what did we start doing this thing?
- 1:31Oliver, it was it was year ago. Wasn't it there?
- 1:38Bring of last year and I think they've changed quite a lot for
- 1:42use in silos, but you become a presence.
- 1:49I wouldn't good. I don't even listen to it every
- 1:52single person or podcasting with knows your name.
- 1:55All right. There's a smile on their face.
- 1:57I was talking to somebody last night who said you were the best
- 2:01of Twitter. So don't even say to me, you
- 2:04know, presents and a positive one at that.
- 2:07Well, What I tried to do, you know, you it's so easy just to
- 2:11go out there and be - and you know criticize and you know try
- 2:17and get attention through being nasty about things but I just
- 2:22find it a much nicer to be to get likes for like and stuff you
- 2:28know to go out and say this is what I likes or let's talk about
- 2:33that rather than you know this is what I don't like.
- 2:36You know was a to be here. Do that said You get you don't
- 2:39win through not liking something I said, great point, isn't it?
- 2:42No, it's still nasty point. You don't win by by hitting on
- 2:46chip, null or Jodie Whittaker or anything.
- 2:48I got sore. Let's go out and in the words of
- 2:51the lovely, Jeff, got or talk, the, who will of, and that's I
- 2:55think I've taken from your example, you know, I started a
- 2:58thread and I'd put, you know, all the Doctor Who stories into
- 3:01that thing where you ask lots of questions, which you prefer this
- 3:04one, or this one, this one or this one, and it gives you the
- 3:07list, are you? Entire ranking of Doctor Who's
- 3:10in reverse order and Marjorie, my last sort of hundred is crowd
- 3:15for the Steven Moffat stories. You'd be surprised how many are
- 3:19in my top 50 as well? You know, I thought it was
- 3:21upside down that list but what I decided to do was actually just
- 3:27every single story, even my least favorite, I will name the
- 3:31things I like about. And it's been a bit of a stretch
- 3:33with some of them are World lie. Yeah, I found something in every
- 3:37single store. We even talk to the Widow and
- 3:39the Wardrobe because that to me isn't that's crammed full of
- 3:43lovely things to enjoy. Delicious, goodness.
- 3:46Oh Frasier, can you hear that? Can you hear that noise?
- 3:50What's that noise? It wasn't that it's our special
- 3:52guest star for the episode. Oh, will you keep it down back
- 3:58there, and he's coming. He's coming now.
- 4:01I would like to introduce you to quickie the cork here is so
- 4:07quick. I like honestly.
- 4:11Okay, okay. So I quality of my little time
- 4:14ago. All right.
- 4:16Hey, he was, in fact, part of the story, we're going to talk
- 4:19about today, but the doll students decided they did not
- 4:23want him around anymore, this homicidal, you know, beatbox
- 4:27guess where I picked him up. When did you pick them up and
- 4:30the Portobello? Road, for a fiver?
- 4:34Yeah, well, she did die. This way, I washed it this way.
- 4:38All right. You must love that movie.
- 4:40Surely. Oh, yes.
- 4:43But not some broomsticks in a jar for the special effects were
- 4:45surprisingly. Good Udall.
- 4:46Sorry. For the first time this week.
- 4:48It's held up really well, I think when we got Disney plus, I
- 4:52found it. So I put it on for Luke and he
- 4:54must have been hit or name at the time and he loved it.
- 4:57He he's watched a quite a few times as well.
- 5:00Yeah. It's safe to really stood up.
- 5:03Anyway, quickie is been about my house.
- 5:05Now I lost my cat a little while back so I neither It's all went
- 5:08looking. It's been about the house, it
- 5:10does a bit of vacuuming, you know, it keeps me company where
- 5:13marks out and can you hear him right now?
- 5:16Can you hear that? Bloody Racket and I thought,
- 5:18what's he doing? Now that's very unpleasant,
- 5:20isn't it is blast in the wall, he calls it art work.
- 5:23Honestly they they're displaying one of his pieces in the Tate
- 5:27modern. Right now, it's amazing or
- 5:30listen. He's been on a lot of Adventures
- 5:32between being on the planet of the Dulce.
- 5:35Ins. Yep, let it cold, I don't kiss.
- 5:38Yes. Thank you very much and I he is
- 5:41going to inform us before and after the episodes, end of what
- 5:45he's been up to, in the interim, I'll tell you what.
- 5:48It's a law. He sounds like he's been around.
- 5:51I don't know. He's a bit psychotic, I'm a bit
- 5:53scared of it behind me there. Anyway.
- 5:55But anyway, he's here, we're here we are.
- 5:58Are you ready? I am born ready.
- 6:02Ready for this story? We're talking about, I mean, I
- 6:04introduced the cork we didn't even say.
- 6:08It's the dominators, of course. Now look the dominators Fraser.
- 6:13Okay. My relationship with the
- 6:14dominators has changed considerably good since the old
- 6:19times of Doc. Oh ho reviews where I think I
- 6:21gave it a measly one out of ten. Was it a 1:1?
- 6:25Don't know. And then UK 191 be praised yet
- 6:30with me and Jack with that. Fabulous, duvet round your neck.
- 6:34Oh yes. Dressed up like a double layer.
- 6:37You think a bit quirky? We talk about this story.
- 6:39Don't worry. Will you be quiet?
- 6:42Honestly got make some drinks for us.
- 6:49Go on. Yes, please quickly, what's
- 6:55that? Oh, did you hear that?
- 6:58What he just said, is this specimen broken?
- 7:01It's froze. Our Gregory probably is yellow
- 7:04honestly. Yeah, Beyond repair quickly.
- 7:07Now. But so, so my relationship with
- 7:09the dominators has changed because of you because well
- 7:12because frankly, you're a force of nature with this story, all
- 7:15right? And your extreme love of quarks,
- 7:20quacks quacks, quacks quacks. You know what?
- 7:24I'll let you have this one, okay?
- 7:26Anything for them to whichever way you want to Cork walk.
- 7:28I'm going with Quark because that's how it's changed.
- 7:30All that social media often. People think you do love my
- 7:33lover off as well. The amount you correct, his
- 7:36pronunciation of everything. Oh, that's just funny, though.
- 7:41Did you hear the way he said Lisa and Chang terracing?
- 7:46Anyways, the dominators the dominators.
- 7:50Tell me where did this love affair begin.
- 7:54So back in the 90s, early 90s. When I was getting in the doctor
- 7:59who have an You know, that the end of them call you were going
- 8:03into the Wilderness years and still wanting to be a fan of
- 8:08Doctor Who, you know, craving more to watch, you've got two
- 8:13choices, you've got BBC repeats or you've got VHS at that point.
- 8:17You've got our boots, but I didn't really get into those.
- 8:20I got in a VHS. So, I remember the first Patrick
- 8:24troughton story had to Sweden was the main rubber which was
- 8:27repeated on the BBC and put the first Hope you adores.
- 8:32Oh absolutely. Yes absolutely.
- 8:34It was just you know it's a fantastic story that one just
- 8:39the power of imagination and the power of what you can do with
- 8:45that format of the show, when things go wrong, when all of a
- 8:50sudden, you've got an episode that you need to fill in.
- 8:54You've got no budget for no sets.
- 8:56All you can do is have a tin of white paint and get some gold
- 8:59robots out the cupboard. Vietnam, B.
- 9:02And you've got a build an episode around that.
- 9:05And let's look on. Why was that Fraser?
- 9:08Well, it's because the episode before it was deemed to be over,
- 9:14not have not enough material for the six parts.
- 9:16It was allocated. I mean, I don't disagree with
- 9:18that. You think you could not listen
- 9:21to six? Someone could the man that was
- 9:24coming through the ranks at the time, I've got no doubt would
- 9:27have been able to Do this is 6 because his influence is, what?
- 9:33Makes it feel the five? I feel that man is tempted.
- 9:36X are well, I mean, he did it with Caesar death, didn't he?
- 9:40He not that into shape. You did a bad job with the
- 9:43walking's, you look at the war games, you know, he's got him
- 9:46and Michael or are taking a six-part story, essentially, and
- 9:51drag it in out a tent. But it's so well-plotted.
- 9:54It's so just a master class in giving you a little It now and a
- 9:58little bit late, and a little bit down the line.
- 10:01So, I think if Terrance dicks had been in his pomp at the time
- 10:06of making the story he could have, he could have made this
- 10:08into six without breaking a sweat.
- 10:10I really do and, but yes, he's just coming through the ranks
- 10:13and there's some little scenes, which will come people never
- 10:17episodes, which are sort of like ten sticks is very first
- 10:20contributions to Doctor Who and it is just that Genius of the
- 10:24man that we've talked about. I think in Ambassador as of
- 10:26being able to pad. Store.
- 10:28We bought do it so entertaining? Any, well, that you don't think
- 10:32it's pad and you just think it's brilliant.
- 10:36So, yes, all gone. But the other point, the the
- 10:40first video chat support for Patrick troughton, was the
- 10:42dominators. Someone watch that a couple of
- 10:46times, in the, in the, in the 90s, I've got the main draw, but
- 10:52obviously, about that as well and because I loved it, I got
- 10:54the dominant as what the croutons as well.
- 10:56So those were May sort of staple.
- 10:58Troutman story's gone up until the started getting repeated on
- 11:01UK gold. Wasn't that many because we
- 11:04didn't have that many in The Archives of the time, but I
- 11:07remember, you know, always enjoying it.
- 11:10Loving it. Really good.
- 11:13Entertaining story came on to Twitter, you know, 20 30 years
- 11:18ago. Yeah.
- 11:20And then there's what people think about the dominators.
- 11:23No one likes it. Why is that awesome?
- 11:25Especially doc? Oh ho yes.
- 11:27But like I've Missed the point of I missed some Plumbing.
- 11:30Let's go back and re-watch it on on the brick box and know.
- 11:33It still stands up to Snuff signs up as a is a fantastic
- 11:38episode, fantastic story. So I feel as if you read my
- 11:41review now and then you specifically targeted me,
- 11:43inveigled your way onto this podcast just about score changed
- 11:49I'll do it. The end of this you know,
- 11:50because you know what, I think I'd probably give it a seven or
- 11:52an eight. Now absolutely had.
- 11:54You know why, as well as I was watching earlier, I watch
- 11:56episode 1 or 2 this morning. And we will talk about this man
- 11:59a bit more but then often is got one of the great comedy turns in
- 12:02it now and I ain't talking about Patrick troughton and Fraser
- 12:04Hines. Oh no, I'm talking about that
- 12:07fabulous. Scientist man in episode one who
- 12:09takes everything in his stride. Oh good lord.
- 12:12This is funnier that I thought we were alive.
- 12:14It is I don't think my Maurice Perry.
- 12:16Got the note that might be the problem.
- 12:18I think he thinks he's directing a drama.
- 12:21I think there's obviously this this troubled production.
- 12:25There's its troubles behind the scenes with the As and scripted
- 12:29that I was sure when at the time.
- 12:32Yeah. You know there's obviously a, I
- 12:34was propping up the bar. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:38So and we ended it with a lock contention, didn't it?
- 12:43Yeah, I mean ended under nerving Iseman and Henry Lincoln it
- 12:47ended the relationship between those two in the BBC essentially
- 12:50and ended the BBC's relationship with the clocks and the
- 12:53potential marketing of fabulous creators like quickie here.
- 12:58Icky here and only thought of some drinks.
- 12:59Thank you very much quicker. That's very kind of you.
- 13:02Hang on, head over there. What's that mean?
- 13:04Oh, he's a skit. He says, as an older required,
- 13:07what do me a favor? Yeah, train, your gun on Fraser
- 13:09Gregory. And if he says anything that
- 13:11does not marry what I think. Shoot him.
- 13:14Lovely. Okay.
- 13:15That's always oh, he's gonna run out of power, is only it very
- 13:19possibly. Yeah, or we will log in this gag
- 13:22to death. Okay, I think we should probably
- 13:27go in. I thought I'm sure.
- 13:28What is the man's name? That that song.
- 13:30Is it bail on Babylon? Let's find out and and and his
- 13:36glamorous assistant comes afterwards.
- 13:39If there's a spin-off in the making the doctor goes to him.
- 13:42Well, you know, we're from another planet from outer space
- 13:44and he goes, oh, really! Well, I shall write that down in
- 13:47my journal, get something that happens every day.
- 13:50I was pissing myself at 4:00 in the morning.
- 13:52I'll tell ya awesome. Did you hear how he said the
- 13:56word robot No, except he talks like dr.
- 14:00Zoidberg in Futurama and goes. Are you telling me?
- 14:04There's some kind of robots. It's a very 1950s way of saying,
- 14:09robot. Okay.
- 14:11Well, look, we've intro'd, yep. I feel like we should watch.
- 14:15That's what cookie gonna lie down.
- 14:17All right, don't conserve your power.
- 14:20All right, if you can't see him. Okay, in five.
- 14:24Four, three, two, one, please. Yeah, it is absolutely
- 14:29desperate, you know, to tell you about his adventures but he's
- 14:31got to wait till the end. He's going after we just need to
- 14:33pass over his power for now, I'll tell you what, I phone
- 14:37chargers. Don't work.
- 14:38After I put in every socket, but honestly, I put okey-dokey I got
- 14:50a question for you straight away one because I got a feeling you
- 14:54prefer this to see the deaf. Absolutely, yeah, yeah.
- 14:57Are you mad? What's not to love, you know,
- 15:03straight in Aliens flying saucers and I'll tell you are.
- 15:10One thing that did strike me was this was better executed than I
- 15:15remember. It being, I do think there is a
- 15:17very 1950s feel. But the see the deliberate.
- 15:23Yeah. That I mean that's the beauty of
- 15:24it. It's it's, it's the last hurrah
- 15:29really of that. Type of story.
- 15:32We'll have this one. We have the croutons and we have
- 15:36space pirates in season 6 after that.
- 15:40It's all what's that? What kind of looking back to
- 15:43science fiction of the Park? Yeah, that sort of that feel of,
- 15:47you know like flying saucers and Little Green Men.
- 15:49And cities made of steel and metal and whatnot.
- 15:56After, after the season will go into season 7 which we both
- 16:00adore, but it is very grounded and down-to-earth but it is
- 16:05suddenly like in there now, isn't it?
- 16:07Yes. As contemporary as it can
- 16:09possibly be, but even when Pertwee goes into space, we
- 16:12don't have the same sort of futuristic feel as this story
- 16:16does. We don't have, you know, you go
- 16:18to a colony in space and it's In the clip, it cursor Paladin is
- 16:24Transylvania and space and Frontier and spirit is just look
- 16:29at my chrism, Transylvania and space.
- 16:31That is a fantastic way of describing cursor.
- 16:35Peloton this is why you're a you know, I think, you know your
- 16:39Genius and then you're going to Hinchcliffe which again is all
- 16:42Gothic hmm. You know stylings you don't
- 16:45really get anything shiny in space.
- 16:47It again, until green Williams comes along but by that point it
- 16:49Is Star Wars a Yi and I there's ice.
- 16:54Shane, is it think there's possibly in the 80s?
- 16:57A couple of moments where they look back.
- 16:59But I think time lash is a throwback to Old science
- 17:03fiction. Yeah.
- 17:07But yeah. You're right.
- 17:08So this is the last stab of other.
- 17:10What like be movie. Yeah, it's him.
- 17:13I was talking to Tiffany other night about this in need
- 17:15described as Flash Gordon. It really is Flash Gordon sort
- 17:21of Buck Rogers, you know, what is it Lizzie?
- 17:24It's the Saturday morning. You have to use in the cinema,
- 17:28you know? They did those little shorts.
- 17:29Yeah, I'm like, yeah. How will Babylon and can do get
- 17:33out of this one in hoonah? Next week?
- 17:36Another thrilling adventure of the dominators will they take on
- 17:40the deadly quarks even down to the costumes as well?
- 17:46Which everyone ridicules It is what it is.
- 17:50It's, it's a costume, it's it's futuristic.
- 17:53It's Spacey. I mean, I do look like they're
- 17:56wearing curtains off the time and dresses.
- 17:59Yeah. But hang on.
- 18:00No. Wait.
- 18:00Hang on. Who's to say in the future?
- 18:02We're not going to wear those exactly, you know, exactly, it's
- 18:07an alien planet, it's an alien culture.
- 18:09That's what you need to convey on the screen and that's what
- 18:12they're doing. So I can't believe I'm going to
- 18:15be giving this so much positivity but I actually
- 18:18thought the band sell between this Bunch on Kelly's.
- 18:22Amazing Adventure, was actually quite fun.
- 18:25It is II. Don't believe him a students
- 18:28because they all look about 30 and Carly looks about 50, even.
- 18:31I think the actor is about though, because he's 50 in the
- 18:3411th. Doctor 11th Hour.
- 18:35Yes, he is. He's a, but this is the odd.
- 18:40It speaks to the Society of the Dawson's that, you know, these
- 18:44are things the cool kids, the rails.
- 18:48Because well, it's eaten. Boys out there is out, isn't it?
- 18:52Yeah, you know, it's colors. So, middle class.
- 18:56It's still a bit shit. Yeah, actually, put the whole
- 18:58societies like that, so you get a picture of this whole society.
- 19:01As just being, you know, made of a bonus, Johnson, tape
- 19:06characters, don't you fast terrified plan.
- 19:09Exactly, Johnson's, exactly. Sort of planet with the boys
- 19:11Johnson's, as planet of the Eaton's eaten kids call.
- 19:15He's crushed, he's learned, please freezer.
- 19:20Love that and they do the POV shot on the planet like Morris
- 19:26Barry. Again, I will say there were
- 19:30moments that I thought was surprisingly Dynamic the bit
- 19:33where the quarks unseen at this point, stop blowing up the
- 19:37spaceship and there's like, tracking shots across the Quarry
- 19:40of things like that. No quite impressive but some of
- 19:43his shooting is very theatrical. Yeah.
- 19:47But this is Who a lot of it's very theatrical.
- 19:50You know, is and it's, it's, you know, you're still in the studio
- 19:53in a very small studio. So you haven't got, you know,
- 19:57it's not really until like the next season.
- 19:59When we get those big expansive sets, the way you can move
- 20:02around and work your Wranglers and whatnot.
- 20:04I think obviously some directors do do it better you know you
- 20:07look good your work will credit seeds of death is is Michael
- 20:10Ferguson common in and oh yeah work in a close-up work in a
- 20:15work in the background always shooting through things here.
- 20:18Yes. Also zooms he Silhouettes
- 20:20things. I mean Ambassador left.
- 20:21We talked about that does he has, he has things on different
- 20:24levels or three sets of got steps of people can come down
- 20:28and go up and then that was marvelous about is, you know,
- 20:31subversion is Kelly things where he's going to, he's going to
- 20:33calm these people out bit money, take him off to the, you know,
- 20:36the island of death and not and try and you know, be able I
- 20:39those ghost walks that you go on, you know, yet turned out to
- 20:41be, no better, nothing about nothing.
- 20:44And then obviously, the dominators have turned up with
- 20:46the quarks and so it turns To a death-defying ride anyway.
- 20:52He's great when he's on top of the game.
- 20:54Yeah, everybody get down and they're running along like
- 20:57really excited to see what that special effect when their faces
- 21:02melt away. I know it's grizzly in it.
- 21:04What is going on there? That's the special weapons
- 21:07Quark. That's was click here by later.
- 21:10You know. We'll see.
- 21:11I've never, I mean, you know, I have had in Blast down a few
- 21:15people since he's been here but you know, that's just the nmds
- 21:19on Twitter or something out. He's got an algorithm so he can
- 21:22find them and he goes off to their houses and melts their
- 21:24faces wonderful. Oh, you know what?
- 21:30I got the I've got the closed captions on at the moment, what
- 21:35they call subtitles. Thank you, sir.
- 21:37And he goes why I hate one of them's called White.
- 21:41Yeah, well I was absolutely convinced today that this it was
- 21:45the dominant again, Warhead, fire.
- 21:49Sometimes I wonder sometimes on helps.
- 21:51It's these three characters. Are they go?
- 21:54There's that, I mean, that's something out of like threads or
- 21:59It's oh yeah. It's in a place where they're
- 22:03talking about radiation a lot. Yeah, it's sort of similar one
- 22:06of those radiator video or give me words out like, nuclear
- 22:10missile strike programs. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:14To show. Like the horror of what happens
- 22:16if we drop the bomb. Yeah.
- 22:18Oh my God, how we got this far in?
- 22:20So we haven't even talked about the to dominators because what I
- 22:23was going to say is that those three characters up Warhead and
- 22:27There's another one, another one, Dewar's unnamed for think
- 22:31it's Em. I'm a big one.
- 22:33Two three translates roughly as one, two and three in.
- 22:37Okay. Are you trying to tell me
- 22:39there's a bit more for behind this than what successful?
- 22:42Absolutely. Well, I don't, I want to talk a
- 22:44bit about the morality of this, as well, and the message,
- 22:48because I think there's more going on here than the B-movie
- 22:51Antics suggest. I'm just not sure.
- 22:54I like the message that is saying.
- 22:58Yeah, so the message I believe that he's been and Lincoln were
- 23:04intending was sort of attack on the hippie culture.
- 23:07Yeah, senior, where you hippies, you know, years of all well and
- 23:11good with your flower power in your piece of notebook.
- 23:15You know, when the big boys come in any way where you're going to
- 23:17be, you know, you're going to be stumped or stomped on a troubled
- 23:22on and this You're the man to sell and I don't forget those
- 23:27are real. Especially now, as a troughton
- 23:28story, we're being subversive. Yeah, and anarchic is the way to
- 23:33go. I mean, it's it's it does make
- 23:37the dolphins, really intestinal find an old, people are probably
- 23:41sitting at home going, what? But it makes their society
- 23:44really, really interesting for me that, you know, they are the
- 23:49Posh boys. The eaten crew.
- 23:51The planet is about as Johnson's.
- 23:54Which is a really good knowledge actually because they're
- 23:56useless. Essentially when this happened
- 23:59on the sequences in their City, when they're all sitting around,
- 24:02I want to talk about that because you know I've had a job
- 24:04where I've been in meetings like that where they just go around
- 24:06in circles and nothing ever gets done.
- 24:08You're having means about meetings, you know.
- 24:10Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 24:11But you know, it's it's not completely unrelatable or
- 24:15unbelievable. It's not like one of these high
- 24:19Concepts societies where you think that would never Evolve
- 24:24naturally serious things. You think you could get to a
- 24:28point where as a society you Embrace pacifism and indolence
- 24:32becomes the order of the day. Yeah, it's hubris.
- 24:36It's I sounds marvelous honestly sitting around on those lounges
- 24:39just chatting about stuff and not having to go to work.
- 24:42It would be in, that would be but that's what you know
- 24:45Lincoln. Here's what I see in his that's
- 24:47that's all very nice. But, you know, In the real
- 24:50world, there's nasty people in are going to come along and, you
- 24:53know, take things from you and bully you and you're not gonna
- 24:56be able to stand up for them if that's the way you go.
- 24:58But like I just don't think it lands very well.
- 25:01It's making the suggestion that they're just a nuisance, rather
- 25:04than like it like an effective Force for change.
- 25:09Yeah. Which they were cultured.
- 25:12It change. Its a six seasons due to that in
- 25:15inverted, commas, hippies. Exactly.
- 25:17I mean, where, where We're now in a society, which is a lot
- 25:20more for to thinking a lot more considerate of other people
- 25:23because of, you know, that progress that was made made back
- 25:28in the 60s and the 70s teii me to pull you away from this
- 25:31intelligent discussion to talk about something seizures.
- 25:34But absolutely love this. Ray gun in a minute.
- 25:37It's the same trick. They pull off in Tomb of the
- 25:39Cybermen, where the gun goes off.
- 25:41Yeah, and after walls on fire, yeah, I'm ready for it.
- 25:48Demolition Man. Oh wow.
- 25:52You know, when Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone unfrozen in
- 25:57the go to the museum, he's like, Let's Get Some Guns.
- 26:00Well, where's doing a place? That there is guns.
- 26:01Now, it's in their lives easier. Yeah, show me the way guns and
- 26:05he's like, you know, she don't get to use the guns later on the
- 26:09Cork's, I can't remember. Yes.
- 26:10The do. What did I quickly?
- 26:11Didn't hear that. That good.
- 26:13So, he lost a lot of good friends that blow their heads
- 26:15off. In this story, you know?
- 26:17Still traumatized this bit in the Museum of the dressed people
- 26:22up as dummies. Are they supposed to be people
- 26:27or they're supposed to be dummies?
- 26:28I can never figure this out. The must be supposed to be
- 26:31dummies. I don't think the words actually
- 26:34go, as far as to say, right in this Society, there is the
- 26:38museum on it is cadavers. We have left cadavers in this
- 26:41house to show you the if I was an actor, okay?
- 26:45And I and the You know, they'd rather pay me to just sit here
- 26:50but but if you're a dummy, I think that's really effective
- 26:56when the camera swings around and they're all there in the
- 26:58anti-radiation suits. Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:02And there's your man Berlin but more.
- 27:05He's so wonderful. It's so amiable.
- 27:07That's what I like about and you know, like what is it about?
- 27:13Exposition for a second or a so, don't get excited.
- 27:16He's like can do you. Tell the doctor and Jamie and
- 27:20Zoe all about the, you know, the history of the island of death
- 27:24and why we don't come here anymore.
- 27:25And this time really well because she's struggling to get
- 27:28it all out and he's kind of chipping in and helping her in a
- 27:31really sweet way. And it's just a nice way of
- 27:33adding a bit of character. What could, what could just be
- 27:35like in time lash? Yeah, just be an exposition
- 27:38dump, you know, it would be, you will be, but did you really try
- 27:43to answer them what? Oh, my beautiful cocoa wet. oh
- 27:51yeah, so what he does is, so it's just so watchable is
- 27:59Annie's, I think, you know, For that, you know, not willing
- 28:06Partners well that the fact that it's the majority of the Patrick
- 28:09troughton stories that are missing from the archive is,
- 28:13it's such a shame because he's always doing something
- 28:15interesting to look at these such a visual actor.
- 28:19I said it a million times. You, you know, I am very
- 28:22grateful the animations. Oh yeah.
- 28:24You just don't get the Nuance in his facial performance.
- 28:27Yeah, it's based always doing something, isn't it?
- 28:30It's just liquid at times. And, you know, when you're done,
- 28:34Shocked faces or when he's got that grin on his face.
- 28:39You know, you'd like to see you. Just don't get that with with
- 28:42the animation forties that you're never going to.
- 28:44You're never gonna wake silver acting isn't the airtight lat, I
- 28:47love it. Yeah, it worries.
- 28:48I'm skipping for Rice into the story now and he's there and
- 28:51he's finding himself and looking very happy with himself from
- 28:54Jamie goes. Look okay.
- 28:56No, she's like, oh my what? Yes.
- 29:06That's a perfectly Splendid planets, you know, like normally
- 29:12we should be cautious this time. He's very relaxed.
- 29:15Yeah, well, this is, it says, you know, I've been here before
- 29:19I've done all that sort of mental projecting, because
- 29:24between the wheel and space and this story, The repeated, the
- 29:28evil of the Daleks. That's right.
- 29:30But they reference in the story. Yeah.
- 29:32Yeah. So at the end of the wheel and
- 29:33space, the doctor say, Well show you because do is hit on the
- 29:36target side. Well I'm sure your what how
- 29:37dangerous it is puts down on you know that leads into a pit with
- 29:41the evil of the Daleks. So when come out of this he's
- 29:44like, oh well, I'm really tired after doing all that mental.
- 29:46Projecting I am, I need a holiday?
- 29:48So with come to De Lucas because it's a lovely place.
- 29:51I've been to before blah blah blah, so he's not expecting any
- 29:54sort of danger and he was like, yeah well we'll take the another
- 29:57sort of the beaches and, you know, take the chair and the
- 29:59beach ball and whatnot. And it's really interesting
- 30:02because that's for me is a really strong.
- 30:04Wrong implication that the doctors actually steered the
- 30:06TARDIS. What for the first time?
- 30:10Yeah. But a doctors actually thought I
- 30:12want to go on holiday. So I'm going to go to the
- 30:13doctors because I know it's a lovely relaxing place.
- 30:16And he's actually steer the Tardis ever thought machine
- 30:20might be part of the TARDIS. So obviously it was too.
- 30:22If brain was in there doing all that, the Tardis was like, are
- 30:25we want to go somewhere restful? Let's go to don't kiss all that.
- 30:30You know what I said? Miserable-looking Quarry.
- 30:32Well it's you know it's beaches and it's sand Cliffs.
- 30:37We don't say nothing. I didn't hate it when tones,
- 30:40although I do think Barry new be set when we go to the city.
- 30:44It's suggesting like it is a painted.
- 30:46Yeah, Clough. And I'm gonna criticize that
- 30:49because we've had a lot of that in the 60s and a lot of it's
- 30:51very effective for what it's doing.
- 30:53But it's suggesting a very sort of majestic.
- 30:57It's a bit like the city of the mechanoids.
- 30:59Yo, yeah, we're layers and and monomials.
- 31:02And yeah, yeah, Glory 1950s. Very 1950s.
- 31:08Yeah, yeah, but that's back. When the future was, you know,
- 31:10they thought the future was going to be gleaming palaces and
- 31:13hover cars and yeah, foolishness, you know.
- 31:15Yeah, it was skip forward, two years and we're in Colony, in
- 31:19space. We're just down in the mud.
- 31:21You know. Yet what happened?
- 31:23Think we went into space, we landed on the moon and we
- 31:25realized actually this isn't going to be the case.
- 31:29You trying to suggest that in our imagination is better than
- 31:31reality. Unfortunately saw.
- 31:33Yes. What are you what I want to say?
- 31:36No. So at Canary Wharf recently and
- 31:39I was literally a monk's oldest skyscrapers.
- 31:41There, when I looked out, I felt as if I was in the planning of
- 31:44the dominators. It was like Space City every
- 31:46time. I looked out the window.
- 31:48Yeah, so I feel like on Earth we are, we are building it on
- 31:51racing. These, fantastic futuristic.
- 31:54Cityscapes I've done over going to see them in our space,
- 31:57though. No shame.
- 31:59I do not. But this is, this is why we have
- 32:02Doctor Who in the dominant us because we can then imagine Oh,
- 32:07and also as well, if this is a love letter to the 19 fit, I
- 32:13think that's something that's worth doing as well.
- 32:15You know, we'll do that. Now, what we do Nostalgia
- 32:17festivals, of doctor Doctor Who in the 60s, in the new series,
- 32:22you know? Absolutely.
- 32:25It's the sort of thing you can imagine Market is doing.
- 32:28I'll for sure. Yeah.
- 32:30Well think every episode he writes is a is allowed to Fester
- 32:33Doctor Who? Yeah.
- 32:34It's it's picking any other Pickin a concept, you know,
- 32:38giving you a lovely warm feeling about that, you know, be it,
- 32:43Victorian London, be it, Robin Hood, you know, all that sort of
- 32:50stuff. So this will be right in his
- 32:51wheelhouse is the be said, for more we go on their Mark rate as
- 32:54a wait, there's a book watch as types for Week. 1 kundu, can
- 32:57give us some it a little bit. FTS with shiny cities and little
- 33:02and chunky robots, you know, hit that would be right in his right
- 33:07in his wheelhouse, I think. So if the message of this is
- 33:11absolute anti hippie movement, I think where it gets a bit
- 33:17blurred is, then you should be showing the dose Ian's, surely
- 33:21as like the superior Force, but actually, they're just proved to
- 33:25be sort of bureaucrats it around nattering and are easily taken
- 33:30over. It's not the hippie, what the
- 33:32hell? No, they are.
- 33:33The hippies aren't they? All really hit me.
- 33:34So I think that's, that's the message is, you know, if you go
- 33:37down this route, if you want to be more peace and love and want
- 33:39you will end up with this Society full of young boys full
- 33:43of hubris where you know, you are Ultimately not going to be
- 33:49able to no matter how enlightened, you think because,
- 33:51you know, coming back over to Alan that.
- 33:54Oh, my favorite. Yeah.
- 33:57But you know, that scene where he's like, oh, I'll write that
- 33:59down in my notebook is still the same time.
- 34:02You kind of like you except in this very, very easily on any
- 34:06sense. What else could you be?
- 34:08There's no. Do you know what photos are
- 34:11going to try it in real life? Every time it's like shocking
- 34:13habits or someone tells me some gossip really a wash or at that
- 34:17round thing. Very much what's even better is
- 34:20when Carly comes in now, and he thinks he's been full, doesn't
- 34:25it? That is there just mates of
- 34:26colleagues that have come in with their back because our, oh,
- 34:30I see from outer space. Are you?
- 34:33He's very believe in or that point, you know, because because
- 34:36they logically, okay, I can't explain your how else you would
- 34:40be here to be in these strange clothes, and all the rest of it.
- 34:43Not know, not know about this island that everyone in the
- 34:46whole planet knows about We're teach it from a very early age
- 34:50not on us. All logic tells me, you must be
- 34:53telling the truth. Until I physically comes in his
- 34:54cigar. You have had his haven't yet
- 34:57trolley and then less is RAC. Lugging about rocks for the rest
- 35:04of the story and he does. He do it by the end?
- 35:06It does he get some? Yeah, I think episode for a
- 35:15quickie about that if he was the one I finished him off.
- 35:18Honestly, I explain it. I do, but dominate is thy right?
- 35:22And now don't get me wrong. I do think they're well
- 35:24performed, but they get a lot of sort of repetitive speeches, and
- 35:32I don't think they, like, is the idea then that this is the
- 35:34superior Force because they just natural as well.
- 35:39I mean, the do but, you know, the of coming to do a job, you
- 35:42know, they've detached from the main Fleet they've come to do a
- 35:45job, which is to, essentially, Really turn this planet into an
- 35:50s or garage a few Brands available, but that's the ignore
- 35:55their job. They have come, you know,
- 35:56they've got, they've got the quarks, the two of them.
- 35:58Right. It's going, you know, do you
- 36:01know, blow this planet opportunity into a radioactive
- 36:04Dumping Ground that we can just use to refuel the fleet as well
- 36:08as we pass through the sector and dominate other planets.
- 36:12So there's a lot of world-building that's got on
- 36:16there. There's a lot of Your suggestion
- 36:18behind that in your the Dominate, as our, this totally
- 36:23ruthless race, they will do exactly what the says on the
- 36:26tin. They're going to come to our
- 36:27planet and dominate it. Take what they want from it and
- 36:30then you know move on or while steering uses a slaves or
- 36:34whatever and so The risk that massive sort of like concept
- 36:42behind them. Which again is, is suggested
- 36:44really well cause it's never sort of like, infield, where is
- 36:47it at all? Don't say, you just have to kind
- 36:49of we get fed on TV. But Exposition it's all, it's
- 36:53all detail that sad. And, you know, classic who did a
- 36:55lot about, you had to sort of suggest the Epic on an intimate
- 37:00scale. Patrick troughton is looking a
- 37:02bit rough in that trial, he looks very thin, doesn't it?
- 37:04You see anyone wrong? I think it wasn't Patrick
- 37:06troughton would, but Look at that show they up the spaceship
- 37:10behind them. That was great.
- 37:12I thought that's a good perspective shot you know.
- 37:14Yeah, absolutely. It looks like and I really like
- 37:17this set you know I know we've got here very flat mountains in
- 37:20the background there yet but this to me feels like a fly is
- 37:25also from a 1950s B-movie. Yeah, we've Landing struts.
- 37:29It's a big circular thing. It's a sorcerer.
- 37:31You know, and it's got that sort of central column with the with
- 37:35the way, the go into the spaceship and I mean we can have
- 37:39an unlimited awful lot to say about Patrick troughton Fraser
- 37:42highs in episode 2. Oh God, yes.
- 37:44Where the comedy starts? Hissing and now.
- 37:47Well, there's there's the first shot of.
- 37:50Oh my God, the quarks, okay. I feel like we should save all
- 37:55our discussion for the design of the quarks and, and their
- 37:59effectiveness for episode 2, but this is accepted practice, isn't
- 38:05it? Suggests the Menace throughout?
- 38:08Episode 1. Yep.
- 38:09And then hit with a visual, The Monster at the ends.
- 38:13Is it an effective visual at the end?
- 38:16It is, it is it's really good because of your look.
- 38:19Again, we're talking about this is bit more dynamically directed
- 38:22than we thought in the past. If you look at that shot, it is
- 38:26the quarks appear on the mountain and some of the hill
- 38:30and toolbar Then appears in the middle of them in the camera
- 38:42Zooms in on the hello. Hello.
- 38:47I totally lost you there for a second.
- 38:48Oh. Say my, my, my internet is
- 38:51unstable happening for a long time, right?
- 38:55Any of what I was seeing was the way that shop is done.
- 38:58Is you've got the two quarks on this top of the hill, then are
- 39:04toolbar appears in the middle of them?
- 39:06You zoom in on the three of them and then you finish with the
- 39:08clothes. Sup of the quacks.
- 39:10That is a really effective reveal of, you know, this unseen
- 39:14Menace that has been, you know, obliterating people as McCall.
- 39:18You know, we've had that horrible sort of nuclear blast
- 39:22effect on on the female dulcian with, we've had the lemon peel,
- 39:27it squeezer. Being blown out.
- 39:30Blown to shit, though. I mean, literally Flyers cross
- 39:33that quarry. It does.
- 39:35It's, I mean, it's just a little shot of just superimposed.
- 39:39Was it actually iron? That is like a that is like a
- 39:42real explosion to me. Mmm, it does look a bit of
- 39:45shows, a bit of forced perspective in their book, you
- 39:47know. So would know, these are quite
- 39:49nasty bits of work and then we'll actually get to see them.
- 39:52And that's what you're going to be left with, until next week
- 39:54isn't, you're going to have that picture of that Quark left
- 39:59thing, and come back next week and see more of it.
- 40:02And if you'll forgive me quickiy, all right.
- 40:05I'll pluck yourself from the wall.
- 40:07I mean, look at him, honestly, that's her.
- 40:09That's an ingenious. You've never seen anything quite
- 40:11like that before. No, I don't bags with a crystal
- 40:14one is heads. Yeah yeah.
- 40:16Sorry with the little arms, its kind of take a classic 50 sort
- 40:20of design of a chunky robot, you know.
- 40:23It's not like sort of like table names like a dollar or dorms
- 40:28like a dollar, it is want your company.
- 40:31It's oxidized with, you know, but those sort of quirky looking
- 40:37robots. Okay.
- 40:40All right. They, they they sticking their
- 40:43heads, you know, their memorable up to it's a, it's a design
- 40:47that's lasted. I mean, we'll see them in this
- 40:49story. We see them at the end of the
- 40:50war games, but the probably endured more than any other sort
- 40:54of One-Shot monster that we've heard and the oh haseman.
- 40:58And Lincoln were not Daft. They led the fight for the
- 41:02quarks because they knew this was a marketable thing.
- 41:06Absolutely was. Yeah, I've been there.
- 41:09The similar fighting are over the fat, Daleks nobody want to
- 41:14do anyway. Now listen now I promised you,
- 41:17the quickie would, in fact inform you of some of his
- 41:19delightful Adventures around time and space.
- 41:22Yep, since you know, before we landed in the Portobello, Road.
- 41:25I mean, I don't know how we ended up with that strange fella
- 41:28on that market stall. There we go.
- 41:30That's another adventure. So by, what was that?
- 41:39Rice. Okay, so apparently right.
- 41:43He met this doctor again, right? Well, he was reprogrammed to
- 41:49become a space assassin and ended up in a old-fashioned car
- 41:55race with the second doctor. Have you heard about this?
- 41:59I think it rings a bell. To be honest I might have heard
- 42:01about this. Yeah, it's basically just going
- 42:03around and around on a track trying to shoot the buggery out
- 42:06of Patrick troughton's doctor. Like a very exciting Adventure.
- 42:10I must say what come back and come back in episode 2 and tell
- 42:13us some more. Yeah these do quickly I am not
- 42:16kidding. You he's been Here There and
- 42:18Everywhere invasions of Gallifrey you know, trials he's
- 42:22bit. He's done it all but you and I
- 42:25Mr. Fraser Gregory will be back for the comical antics of Fraser
