Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey Hurdlers, Emily about he here bringing you another installment
- 0:23Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I'm so excited to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be here with you. I'm so excited that this beautiful
- 0:30Speaker 1: week was such a beautiful week. I think a lot
- 0:32Speaker 1: of us were off a little bit on edge going
- 0:35Speaker 1: into the inauguration, but the day was just filled with
- 0:40Speaker 1: hope and promise. I loved what the President said about
- 0:44Speaker 1: unifying our country and wanting to show up for everyone,
- 0:48Speaker 1: regardless of whether or not they voted for him. Even
- 0:51Speaker 1: more so, what I adored was seeing Kamala Harris and
- 0:56Speaker 1: every single woman that came up on that stage, whether
- 0:59Speaker 1: it was Lady Gaga or Jennifer Lopez, the way that
- 1:03Speaker 1: they looked at her with such admiration and such awe.
- 1:06Speaker 1: I think that woman all over the country, you know
- 1:09Speaker 1: they feel that way. Then they look at her because
- 1:11Speaker 1: Kamala is a hard worker and the first female in
- 1:16Speaker 1: the White House properly as the Vice President of the
- 1:20Speaker 1: United States. Like it just it's insane. What I want
- 1:23Speaker 1: to talk about today, like so much of the Internet
- 1:27Speaker 1: is talking about today, is Amanda Gorman. Unless you've been
- 1:31Speaker 1: living under a rock, you and no offense maybe you've
- 1:35Speaker 1: had a busy week. Amanda Gorman is the poet that
- 1:40Speaker 1: spoke and read at the inauguration. She was the twenty
- 1:44Speaker 1: seventeen National Youth Poet Laureate. She graduated from Harvard. She's
- 1:50Speaker 1: a twin from Los Angeles. She has been very successful
- 1:55Speaker 1: leading up to the opportunity to speak at the inauguration.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I was reading about her. She has written for The
- 2:01Speaker 1: New York Times. She's had a ton of amazing brand partnerships,
- 2:06Speaker 1: ranging from Nike to Praduct. This young woman is a
- 2:09Speaker 1: show stopper. And the moment that she got up on
- 2:13Speaker 1: the stage, she had such a poise and a presence
- 2:16Speaker 1: and a confidence about her that I thought was really beautiful.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And then her words like God. As someone who uses
- 2:24Speaker 1: words a lot and says a lot of them on
- 2:27Speaker 1: a weekly basis, with the opportunity to, you know, impact people,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I was at a loss for words listening to hers.
- 2:39Speaker 1: After listening to her and reading more about her, I
- 2:42Speaker 1: feel so inspired by her. It brings me to this
- 2:46Speaker 1: concept of wanting to lift each other up and that
- 2:51Speaker 1: there doesn't need to be like one person that can
- 2:54Speaker 1: win in life, like people can be going on their
- 2:58Speaker 1: own path and along their own journey, and good kind
- 3:03Speaker 1: people want to lift other good kind successful people up.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And I want to be here cheerleader, and I believe
- 3:10Speaker 1: that there is room for everyone's successes. Just seeing her success,
- 3:14Speaker 1: it literally gave me the chills, and it made me
- 3:17Speaker 1: excited and it inspired me. It inspired me to think
- 3:21Speaker 1: about what it is the really big things that I
- 3:24Speaker 1: want to do. What are my loftiest career goals, because
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm sure for her, like speaking at an inauguration was
- 3:33Speaker 1: probably one of them, and she checked that off at
- 3:35Speaker 1: twenty two. I spent a part of my morning yesterday
- 3:40Speaker 1: in opening my gray baron fake notebook and sitting on
- 3:44Speaker 1: my gray couch and writing down literally my wildest dreams
- 3:48Speaker 1: that I don't think I think about enough. I think
- 3:52Speaker 1: we're so focused on the here and the now and
- 3:56Speaker 1: you know, just staying afloat and getting the things done
- 3:58Speaker 1: that we need to get done so that we can proceed.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And it felt exciting and I kind of got, you know,
- 4:08Speaker 1: a little choked up thinking about my own potential. Not
- 4:11Speaker 1: to say that so many of my loftiest huge goals
- 4:13Speaker 1: or anywhere within reach right now, but when you take
- 4:16Speaker 1: a step back and you ask yourself, like, what is
- 4:18Speaker 1: it that I can do within my power, within some
- 4:22Speaker 1: sort of more immediate timeline, to put myself in a
- 4:25Speaker 1: better position to one day get that thing. It's not
- 4:28Speaker 1: necessarily like a concrete action at all, but perhaps just
- 4:34Speaker 1: shifting your perspective or being more kind, or treating people
- 4:38Speaker 1: the way that you hope to be treated in return.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I don't think that a lot of really successful people,
- 4:45Speaker 1: or at least those that have left a lasting impact,
- 4:49Speaker 1: got to where they want to be because they didn't
- 4:52Speaker 1: treat other humans with compassion and goodness. And so it's
- 4:56Speaker 1: just something I'm thinking about. I'm thinking about my big dreams,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and this week I prompt for you is to encourage
- 5:03Speaker 1: you to do the same. So ask yourself, what is
- 5:07Speaker 1: one thing that you are after that you haven't put
- 5:10Speaker 1: pen to paper on in quite some time. Then ask yourself,
- 5:15Speaker 1: what is one thing that you can do, maybe within
- 5:18Speaker 1: the next year, to get you in the direction that
- 5:22Speaker 1: you need to go, to propel you in that way
- 5:25Speaker 1: to maybe one day do this thing. Don't hold yourself back.
- 5:31Speaker 1: That's something else I'll say here. Oftentimes, you know, we
- 5:33Speaker 1: are the only people standing in our own way, and
- 5:36Speaker 1: I actually watched a snippet of an interview that Amanda
- 5:40Speaker 1: Gorman did on The Today Show from twenty eighteen, and
- 5:43Speaker 1: when she was talking about her speech impediment, she said
- 5:46Speaker 1: that for her, she realized that she was the only
- 5:50Speaker 1: person standing in her own way when it came to
- 5:53Speaker 1: getting out in public and breaking down those walls and
- 5:56Speaker 1: putting herself out there. And so be your own biggest
- 5:59Speaker 1: type man, and keep going. Write down your big goals.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm curious to hear about them, so feel free to
- 6:05Speaker 1: tag me with them over on Instagram or shoot me
- 6:08Speaker 1: a DM Highlights of the week. As always all of
- 6:12Speaker 1: these the links to this stuff can be found in
- 6:15Speaker 1: the show notes. If you have yet to watch this,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I can't talk it up enough. I'm obsessed with the
- 6:20Speaker 1: Shawn Mendes in Wonder documentary on Netflix. I've always been
- 6:24Speaker 1: a Shawn Mendes fan. I loved his MTV Unplugged album.
- 6:28Speaker 1: It's like definitely in my regular rotation, but learning more
- 6:32Speaker 1: about him and how he grew up and how he's
- 6:34Speaker 1: literally been after this since he was super young, it
- 6:38Speaker 1: was really cool. Also, I've been on a celebrity documentary
- 6:42Speaker 1: kick lately, and just a documentary kick in general. I'm
- 6:45Speaker 1: linked to the party, but I just watched the Taylor
- 6:47Speaker 1: Swift Netflix documentary Miss Americana. I thought that was super interesting.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So if you have more documentaries to recommend to me,
- 6:55Speaker 1: definitely message me. Another thing to be in the note
- 6:59Speaker 1: about Bridgerton is officially renewed for season two. I, like
- 7:03Speaker 1: many of you, binge the whole thing in about forty
- 7:07Speaker 1: eight hours. Maybe a couple weeks back, someone else said
- 7:09Speaker 1: to me that there is likely to be eight seasons
- 7:12Speaker 1: total of the show because it's based on a set
- 7:15Speaker 1: of historical romance novels which ran for eight books. Who knows,
- 7:18Speaker 1: maybe we'll get eight seasons at least. Also, I want
- 7:22Speaker 1: to say congrats to Ayisha Prottleer. She's a past Turtle guest.
- 7:26Speaker 1: She does announced a new sponsorship with Puma. There's so
- 7:29Speaker 1: exciting things from Puma to come in terms of running
- 7:34Speaker 1: this year, so stay on the lookout for that. If
- 7:36Speaker 1: you haven't listened yet to Aisha's episode of Hurdle, I'll
- 7:40Speaker 1: put a link to that in the show notes. Also
- 7:42Speaker 1: this week on Hurdle, if you missed it, don't forget
- 7:44Speaker 1: to listen in to Dave Asbury. He's a biohacker and
- 7:47Speaker 1: an author and the founder of Bulletproof. And also on Wednesday,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I posted an episode on how to find workout motivation
- 7:53Speaker 1: and make movement a regular habit. And lastly, I do
- 7:57Speaker 1: want to plug Alexi PAPIs over on Finding Master Rates,
- 8:01Speaker 1: a podcast with doctor Michael Gervai. He is a high
- 8:04Speaker 1: performance psychologist. He works with a ton of really great athletes,
- 8:08Speaker 1: some of which have been on the show before, and
- 8:11Speaker 1: they're talking about a lot of stuff, discussing her battle
- 8:14Speaker 1: with depression and strategies for improving mental health. I really
- 8:18Speaker 1: appreciate this. I'm excited about this because this month's Hurdle
- 8:21Speaker 1: book Club pick is Alexi's new book Bravy, and I
- 8:27Speaker 1: don't often bring spoilers to the feed like this, but
- 8:30Speaker 1: she may or may not be in an upcoming episode
- 8:34Speaker 1: of Hurdle, so stay tuned. That's all for this week.
- 8:38Speaker 1: As always, as you're listening, tag Hurdle over on Instagram
- 8:41Speaker 1: at Hurdle podcast. I'm over at emily a Body. Make
- 8:43Speaker 1: sure to sign up for book club, sign up for
- 8:46Speaker 1: the weekly Hurdle, and if you haven't done so yet,
- 8:49Speaker 1: rate and review the show in the iTunes store. Another
- 8:52Speaker 1: hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time. My hear
