- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn. Here it is, Wednesday the 18th
- 0:15of September, Hump day, middle of the week.
- 0:17Hope you're going well. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:20and inviting me into the busyness of your day or maybe
- 0:24the calm of your day. Either way, glad to be able to
- 0:28share this moment with you as we are going to crack open God's
- 0:31word on today which is actually the international equal payday.
- 0:36Today is the day that United Nations says we would like
- 0:39everyone to be cognizant of the fact that at the moment in our
- 0:43world, there are many people that do a hard day's work and
- 0:46really don't get paid equally for the work they do and are
- 0:50exploited. And I know like me, many of you
- 0:52probably think, what can I do? I live in a developed country
- 0:56where everything comes to me in a grocery store or a, or a, or a
- 1:00rack on a clothes shop. And I don't know how to, to make
- 1:04informed decisions. Well, there are lots of ways
- 1:06that we can actually amazingly things like, did you know that
- 1:10if you buy an item of clothing that has all the way through the
- 1:13supply chain paid people a living wage, it only costs about
- 1:17$0.80 more than if people were exploited through that chain.
- 1:22So I would encourage you as I have done, to think what can I
- 1:26do to make a difference? Perhaps even just choose one
- 1:29thing that you consume each day, like like your coffee?
- 1:32Is it fair trade coffee or do some reading about your
- 1:36favourite brands to see if they ethically source the things that
- 1:39they use to make their products. Just little things we can do to
- 1:42make sure that people around the world are treated with the
- 1:44dignity that God created them with.
- 1:48Just something to think about on this day when the United Nations
- 1:51says this is still something in our world that needs our help.
- 1:55So I commend that to you, friends.
- 1:57And of course, the gold standard and ethical treatment of others
- 2:00is our incredible God who loves all of us whether we deserve it
- 2:04or not. So we are going to settle down
- 2:07and hear God's word to us, as captured by Paul as he writes to
- 2:13his friends in Second Corinthians Chapter 11.
- 2:26I hope you were put up with a little more of my foolishness.
- 2:29Please bear with me, for I am jealous for you with the
- 2:33jealousy of God Himself. I promised you as a pure bride
- 2:38to one husband, Christ, but I fear that somehow your pure and
- 2:45undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve
- 2:49was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent.
- 2:52You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they
- 2:56preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a
- 2:59different kind of spirit than the one you received, or a
- 3:03different kind of gospel than the one you believed.
- 3:07But I don't consider myself inferior in any way to these
- 3:11super apostles who teach such things.
- 3:14I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I'm not lacking in
- 3:18knowledge. We have made this clear to you
- 3:21in every possible way. Was I wrong when I humbled
- 3:25myself and honoured you by preaching God's good news to you
- 3:28without expecting anything in return?
- 3:32I robbed other churches by accepting their contributions so
- 3:36I could serve you at no cost. And when I was with you and
- 3:41didn't have enough to live on, I did not become a financial
- 3:45burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia
- 3:48brought me all that I needed. I have never been a burden to
- 3:52you, and I never will be as surely as the truth of Christ is
- 3:57in me. No one in all of Greece will
- 4:01ever stop me from boasting about this.
- 4:03Why? Because I don't love you.
- 4:06God knows that I do. But I will continue doing what
- 4:10I've always done. This will undercut those who are
- 4:14looking for an opportunity to boast that their work is just
- 4:17like ours. These people are false apostles.
- 4:21They are deceitful workers who disguise themselves as apostles
- 4:25of Christ. But I'm not surprised.
- 4:28Even Satan disguises himself as an Angel of light.
- 4:32So it is no wonder that His servants also disguise
- 4:35themselves as servants of righteousness.
- 4:38In the end, they will get the punishment their wicked deeds
- 4:41deserve. Again, I say, don't think that
- 4:46I'm a fool to talk like this. But even if you do, listen to me
- 4:51as you would to a foolish person.
- 4:53While I also boast a little, such boasting is not from the
- 4:57Lord. But I am acting like a fool.
- 5:01And since others boast about their human achievements, I will
- 5:05too. After all, you think you are so
- 5:08wise, but you enjoy putting up with fools.
- 5:11You put up with it when someone enslaves you, takes everything
- 5:15you have, takes advantage of you, takes control of
- 5:19everything, and slaps you in the face.
- 5:22I'm ashamed to say that we've been too weak to do that.
- 5:27But whatever they dare to boast about, I'm talking like a fool
- 5:31again. I dare to boast about it too.
- 5:34Are they Hebrews? So am I.
- 5:37Are they Israelites? So am I?
- 5:39Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I?
- 5:42Are they servants of Christ? I know I sound like a madman,
- 5:47but I have served him far more. I have worked harder, been put
- 5:52in prison more often, been whipped times without number,
- 5:56and faced death again and again. Five different times the Jewish
- 6:00leaders gave me 39 lashes. 3 times I have beaten with rods.
- 6:06Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked,
- 6:09Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.
- 6:13I've travelled on many long journeys.
- 6:15I've faced danger from rivers and from robbers.
- 6:19I've faced dangers from my own people, the Jews as well as from
- 6:23the Gentiles. I've faced dangers in the
- 6:26cities, in the deserts and on the seas.
- 6:30And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but
- 6:33are not. I have worked hard and long,
- 6:37enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty
- 6:43and have often gone without food.
- 6:45I have shivered in the cold without enough clothing to keep
- 6:48me warm. Then, besides all this, I have
- 6:54the daily burden of my concern for all the churches.
- 6:58Who is weak without my feeling that weakness?
- 7:02Who is LED astray? And I do not burn with anger?
- 7:07If I must boast, I would rather boast about the things that show
- 7:11how weak I am. God, the Father of our Lord
- 7:15Jesus, who is worthy of eternal praise, knows I am not lying.
- 7:21When I was in Damascus, the governor under King Aretas kept
- 7:25guards at the city gates to catch me.
- 7:28I had to be lowered in a basket through a window in the city
- 7:32wall to escape him. Our Lord, thank you for the
- 7:45reminder in this passage that our comfort is not our life
- 7:51goal. It can feel like it as we try to
- 7:55make ourselves comfortable. That seems like such a priority.
- 7:58But here Paul speaks about all those terrible situations he has
- 8:03found himself in without regret because it's you, and it's your
- 8:07mission that he holds up first and foremost as important in his
- 8:11life. What a lofty goal for us to
- 8:14aspire to. So I pray that in small ways you
- 8:19would shift our heart, that we would think more about the
- 8:24spiritual needs of others who need to know of your love and
- 8:28provision more than what what would seem important to our own
- 8:32comfort. Ah, change our hearts, renew our
- 8:38minds, continue to align us with your heart and your will for our
- 8:44lives. We pray all of this in the
- 8:48saving name of Jesus, Amen.
