Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Releasing The Inner Child With SEBASTIAN BACH
Transcript
- 0:23This is Sebastian Bach, the original voice of skid Row, and I have
- 0:28a new record out on tomorrow, Yeah, tomorrow, dude. It's called
- 0:37Child Within the Man and it's produced by Elvis Basquet mastered by Robert Ludwig.
- 0:45The first single, what Do I Got to Lose is already over one million,
- 0:52two hundred views on YouTube, so people really are responding to that song,
- 0:58for sure. And we got another video ill called Everybody Bleeds, and
- 1:02we're about to release one for hold On to the Dream. And this is
- 1:08a heavy metal, hard rock, melodic album where I use all the sounds
- 1:17of my voice, the ballad sounds, the rough screaming sounds, the clean,
- 1:23soaring tones. That's my I'm very proud of the vocals and the songs
- 1:27on this record, for sure. Sure, Mom, I can tell you
- 1:30I had to listen to it last night and again this morning, and and
- 1:34you haven't lost any of your vical Rangebro. Everything year is ill. You
- 1:38yell at my children and my voice cracks, but you took on going unbrother.
- 1:42Oh well, I warm up all the time and do these scales that
- 1:48I've been doing since the year nineteen eighty eight. Believe it or not,
- 1:52and so I just keep it going. But it's not easy, and uh,
- 1:57you know, you got to know how to do it or you will
- 2:00lose it, use it or lose it. So I got a friend who's
- 2:02a singer in the band and Eastwey's Boys, Starns Gingerbee like he drinks and
- 2:07he calls it nick oil. But he'll drink that strip when I drink beer.
- 2:12I feel like I'm renting it because I'm always going to take a piss
- 2:16what I'm drinking. Yes feeling. I know that the press release Cole's chart
- 2:27within the band your voice unapologetic and undeniable offering. Yet it's a big Cobra.
- 2:32He's had some bright albums, but you agree, well, I think
- 2:38this album is different because it's the first solo record I have where I've got
- 2:45a full team of people helping me. So they're keeping me really really busy
- 2:52doing interviews and yesterday I spent all day autographing album flats that you're going to
- 2:58be able to get in records store, hopefully in Australia. I don't know.
- 3:02But I have like a whole international team of people that are helping me,
- 3:07so I think that makes it undeniable. The fact that they got me
- 3:14back in the radio here in America is insane to me because I didn't think.
- 3:20I didn't know that that was still possible. I always hoped it was.
- 3:23But you always get labeled the eighties or hair band, and you think
- 3:28that a programmer won't play somebody with that label. But I am happy to
- 3:35say that that does not apply to me, Thank you very much. It
- 3:40should, Buddy, neither, it should. Just it's just, really,
- 3:45it feels incredible to have a song playing on the radio in twenty twenty four.
- 3:51It feels astonishing. So that's really good gratulation. Man. As we
- 3:57said, you've released at the albums in Koreina. Why now do you have
- 4:00a set retain or process for each new album or do you approach to everyone
- 4:03differently? I just my routine is, I'm always jotting down ideas for lyrics.
- 4:12I'm always coming up with like titles. I always oh, that'll be
- 4:16a good title for a song, and I always put it in my file
- 4:21on my phone or write it down or keep track of it somehow. And
- 4:27then my friend, I have a lot of guitar player friends and I collect
- 4:30riffs. All I need is a riff, like the beginning of Everybody Bleeds.
- 4:34As soon as I heard Dad Dad about a da da, I go,
- 4:39there you go. There's a riff. And once I have like twelve
- 4:46demos or ten or even eight, it's time to start think about making an
- 4:53album. You know. That's it. It's pretty simple. But it takes
- 4:57a long time for me to get to the point where I love it enough
- 5:02that I want to put my name on it and do interviews about it and
- 5:08put it out in public like that. Takes a long time to get to
- 5:13that point. Yeah. Speaking of the song Everybody Bleads, it opens the
- 5:17album like a lot. It might just be me here, I don't I
- 5:20but but I started listening to like it starts. Initially, it sounds really
- 5:25soft flockish, and I'm sitting there thinking, fuck, don't tell me Sebastian's
- 5:28gone down this ride as well. Bang, all of a sudden, the
- 5:30drums and GITARKI and it's like, why did I have a fucking doubt him?
- 5:34Like this? What it was? Something like that? I think you're
- 5:40thinking of the song hold On to the Dream. Sorry, Yeah, that's
- 5:44the one that starts off soft. That song is a tribute to the classic
- 5:51metal of the seventies, like that, all the songs that start out soft
- 5:58and then hit you over the head like with a club. I'm talking about
- 6:01like Children of the Sea, Sign of the Southern Cross, Beyond the Realms
- 6:10of Death. Those songs all have these beautiful, sweet intros and then fucking
- 6:18bang, man fuck he and you don't see it coming. You're like,
- 6:25you're like, oh man, this is gonna be and this is like air
- 6:28supply. But I gotta tell you, though, I do like singing in
- 6:39that ballad style. I've always liked that, like I remember you and eighteen
- 6:45in life, and so when I hear that that ballad sound, I do
- 6:49like it. But but I always loved a song that starts out sweet and
- 6:56then turns totally evil, like I like that. That's and that's probably my
- 7:00favorite song on this record. And yeah, yeah, I'm gonna tell you
- 7:05bright like because I review a lot of albums as well, and I call
- 7:10them the chike in ballad. On albums, FA fants have got to have
- 7:12a chaike one, and I usually bringe it's like, fuck, I don't
- 7:15want to hear another one. But when your album's coming out, I actually
- 7:16look forward to hearing the ballad before Wow so much Wow, thank you for
- 7:23saying that. Thank you. The song to Live Again is the last song
- 7:28on the record, and that's the big, huge ballad that I wrote with
- 7:31Miles Kennedy, who I also wrote the first single with, so and I.
- 7:38You know this this ballad. My wife and a couple other interviewers said
- 7:42it reminded me like a Broadway song, and I wasn't trying to do that,
- 7:46but I was on Broadway, so maybe that was an influence. But
- 7:50to me, it sounds like a football European football rugby rugby chant, like
- 8:00those oh yeah, those kind of football chants for rugby. Yeah, that's
- 8:07what it reminds me of. Rugby meets Broadway. Mate. There's there's your
- 8:13rugby, Rugby Rugby, there's the there's the title of your articles Rugby meets
- 8:18Broadway excellent. And you've been listened to some pretty awesome guest musicians as well.
- 8:28Mate. You've got John five who returns for the third time. There's
- 8:30Stave Stevens and Orianthe Mate, like it's contribute to a different song. So
- 8:35you tell us a bit about each of those songs and what they actually bring
- 8:37to it. Well, I suppose we should start with Orianthi because she's from
- 8:43Australia, so there's an interest right there. This is a collaboration of Orianthi
- 8:50and myself. I've Lost You. That's got to be the song because there's
- 9:03something about that chorus that won't leave my head. Dude. I walk around
- 9:07the house and I'm constantly humming it, and when that happens, it tells
- 9:11me that's a good song to put out. Yeah, and I love Orientthe's
- 9:18lead guitar solo in that song, and the lead part is so cool.
- 9:22Every time I hear it. That fucking rocks my world. And I really
- 9:28want to do a video for that as a tribute to the women of the
- 9:33world and have her star the video. So hopefully I can make that happen.
- 9:39And then John five, as you said, it's our third album in
- 9:43a row, and the song we did Freedom on this album is kind of
- 9:48a tribute to the cow bell, my favorite instrument. That's my favorite instrument.
- 9:58I love the album. And then Steve Stevens comes along for a song
- 10:03called f U and to me, that song sounds like deep Purple on steroids
- 10:13this day, and just picture it. I'd like to say. It's nice
- 10:22song on the album called in the Man, right, which suggests that the
- 10:24title's going to be a bit more significant to you. Well, that's a
- 10:28line from the song Everybody Bleeds, which is the first song on the album,
- 10:33And there's a video out that you can watch for that. And I'm
- 10:39a dad. I don't know about you, Chris, I got two Beautiful
- 10:43night and nine. Well there you go, congratulations. And as a dad,
- 10:50I'm constantly haunted by what is this planet going to be like for our
- 10:56kids to live on after we're gone on seventy five years from now. What
- 11:03are we leaving behind to our kids? And I always think about that always,
- 11:09always I'm like, are they gonna have to live underground? Are they
- 11:13gonna go to the moon? Are they gonna? I mean, I don't
- 11:16have any idea then, So so that line child within the Man in the
- 11:24video, the video is about me watching the news and it's me losing my
- 11:30home in Hurricane Irene. And that's actual real footage of my house underwater.
- 11:39And I know you guys in Australia have had horrendous blooding and fires and I
- 11:45see it on the news. It's fucking terrible what you guys are going through,
- 11:50And how can you not think about that? How can you not write
- 11:54about that? I mean, I have to write about things that means to
- 12:00me, and uh, my kids mean everything to me. And that video
- 12:05also is like me watching the news and I get so disgusted with all the
- 12:09misery that I just turn it off and I pick up my album and put
- 12:16it on and start rocking out and fuck the News. There's a new T
- 12:20shirt, brother, Fuck the News. Yeah, that would be a good
- 12:28T shirt. I want to ask you about the album artwork, too,
- 12:35bro, which is actually made up of two paintings from your late father,
- 12:37Like it must be a massive source surpride for you and your family to honor
- 12:41its memory by. But I know you've done it with a couple of albums
- 12:43in the past, but every time it must just let's just get you there.
- 12:48It's really an album cover from heaven, like literally because my dad did
- 12:54it and he's not alive, and staring at your background, it looks incredible,
- 13:01Like I'm looking at your fucking screen with you. You're right in the
- 13:05middle of the cross of Jesus. The cars like behind you, and I'm
- 13:11running beside. It looks incredible. It looks like in America, like in
- 13:18southern California. There's a tradition among Latin Americans when somebody dies, they make
- 13:24these graffiti murals, like on the side of a road, fence or a
- 13:31wall. And somebody said, that's what that reminds me of, like when
- 13:35they paint like the tribute to people that are no longer with us. But
- 13:41but yeah, man, it was my project to see if I could make
- 13:46a record that felt like it came out in the seventies, because that's what
- 13:50I like to collect, like Rose Tattoo, AC DC, Aerosmith, Rush,
- 13:56you know, all those era bands. And I tried to make the
- 14:01music sound like that. And the album cover is from seventy eight, when
- 14:07I was ten years old, so I couldn't have couldn't have. Did tried
- 14:11harder to make something that came from that era. So did did you actually
- 14:16write the album with that painting in mind or was it sort of more of
- 14:20a subconscious thing. No, I did not. I live. I live
- 14:26in Las Vegas, where it gets extremely hot like Australia does in the summertime,
- 14:35and I knew I had my dad's original sub human race painting in my
- 14:41storage, and I knew I had to get it out of there and preserve
- 14:46it because it's too hot in Vegas. So so I went and got these
- 14:52painting out of storage. I unrolled it in my living room and underneath the
- 14:56subhuman race painting was this painting that my dad did in seventy eight and I
- 15:03had forgotten about it. And he also did a painting of me from Circus
- 15:07magazine in eighty nine of me on stage with skid Row on stage and Giant
- 15:16Stadium, and that was on the wall while I unrolled the child painting,
- 15:22and I realized child within the man, there it is, and that's the
- 15:28line from the song. And I was like from heaven. It was like
- 15:33a lightning bolt came through the ceiling that said, here's your album cover,
- 15:37dude, And so I put them two together, like peanut butter and chocolate.
- 15:43Who knew? Who knew? Your Dad's something they having to be with.
- 15:46Let me right now, Mike go and that's my yeah, boy,
- 15:50Yeah, that's right. He's going look at my fucking album cover. All
- 15:54over the world. Nobody would nobody would have ever seen it, man,
- 15:58And that makes me so Proun Man like, wow, Wow, wow to
- 16:04turn to Turn, a painting from seventy eight that was rolled up in storage
- 16:10for decades and now it's in every record store around the world. It's your
- 16:15background on your laptop in Australia Like, right on, man, I don't
- 16:22know if you stay it for that, man, but you've given me goosebumps.
- 16:25So that's fucking amazing. That is a fucking amazing and I can't wait
- 16:30to make it my background on my zoom. But get stuck letting. I
- 16:33may not give you a few pointers. Thank you, dude. Are you
- 16:37currently on the road with you? What do I Got to Lose to?
- 16:41Which started on an eighties breez out of Florida on February twenty ninth, gonna
- 16:45take you through Brazil, Ria, Degnaro, in Mexico or Latin America and
- 16:48the US before winding up in Sandy Diego on June twenty eighth. Marte like,
- 16:52that's a hell of a lot of shows. How do you do it?
- 16:56How do I do it? Well, it's what I do. Yeah,
- 17:00still I have at on right, that's a lot of well, well,
- 17:04I come from a time in our first tour in the USA in nineteen
- 17:11eighty nine, we did thirty one shows in twenty nine days once and that's
- 17:18doing two shows a day a couple of days where we opened up for bon
- 17:23Jovi and then later that night we would headline a club in skid Row.
- 17:29So that was so much a trial by fire that that's that's what I know
- 17:37how to do, you know, And some of these kids that try to
- 17:41take my place life fall fall by the wayside. It's like, you know,
- 17:47there's things that you learn doing thirty one shows and twenty nine nights that
- 17:53you don't learn other than just by doing it, Like I mean, and
- 18:00you might think you can do it, but good luck, good good ONYA
- 18:04good ONYA go for it, don't have a crack, don't hurt yourself in
- 18:12How about Australia, We were in your saw its Light of this year.
- 18:15I phaps absolutely, you know, it's I have a very special relationship with
- 18:22Australia and I always have. And there was a period around twenty ten or
- 18:29two thousand and seven there was a time when I did like three tours in
- 18:33four years of Australia, Like it was amazing, Like I even played like
- 18:38Canbra and all these tiny little placed towns, and you know what my goal
- 18:45is in Australia. Like I remember one time I was over there on tour
- 18:51recently and I saw on the paper I saw. I thought I was doing
- 18:55a good tour, and then I saw Pink's tour. I saw, I
- 18:59saw her fucking tour. I go what the she did like two months like
- 19:07Bertie Cities. And I know for a fact that people know me in more
- 19:14than Melbourne, Sydney perse I know. I know they do because it's a
- 19:21fact. And I want to play Woolen Gong and all the other places like
- 19:26the out of the Way. I want to go everywhere that Pink goes.
- 19:30I don't want to fling myself around on the wires as I could just see
- 19:34you in a tutu in touch on their own. I think I'm too I
- 19:38think I'm too big. I'm too big a bloke, as you said.
- 19:42But uh, but I do think I could get I think I could do
- 19:45a very extensive tour of Australia, and I would love to do that.
- 19:51I've actually got someone in mind, a promider her in mind that might be
- 19:53interested in begging the Ivy brow. I'll give you the clol as soon as
- 19:56we finish on this. I know, after all my years in Australia,
- 20:00I know for a fact that they know me in all the cities, not
- 20:04just a handful of cities. Man, all right, Sebastian, Well,
- 20:08that's the time off that I'm able to spend absolutely pleasure talking to me.
- 20:11This child within the Man is out May the tenth, which will be tomorrow
- 20:15by the time this comes out, and it's everything you'd expect from Sebastian and
- 20:18more might say, congratulations, beautiful, thank you, Chris, Thank you
- 20:22Australia for thirty five years of Bach and Roll. Enjoy the new record.
- 20:29But should I should I say the first thirty five years? Yeah? You
- 20:33and you got another thirty five in you bright Like, I know you're three
- 20:37perman, but that's a bit of a big stread. Hey, man,
- 20:41if Jimmy Barnes from Cold Chisel and if Angry Anderson and Jimmy Barnes are still
- 20:51rocking, I'm just a little baby. I'm like I just got started.
- 20:55Compared to those guys. You got your baby teeth compared to them, right,
- 20:59that's right. I don't care what you do. I say. I'm
- 21:33a both head ready strike an you try no time for the compromise. Come,
- 21:38I kid it if you tell tonight, can't I gona shave you?
- 21:55No, I gotta hit you in the leado joy when the scene looking in
- 21:59the kiddy come a crook and want you wake up? It'll be took.
- 22:11What as I got to this? Why have I got to sides? Stand?
- 22:21So I'm saying why did I got to chase? Why don't I got
- 22:26to change? So somehow love me holding out some trashman day. You can
- 22:45get me take it for set, but you can't. He can wean my
- 22:48crowd. You can warm me to some mission by one of these you can
- 22:53give it a try. Awake up, came the counselors. What are the
- 23:18contacides? Stand? Name is a prison? Say what if I got to
- 23:27choose? Why don't I got to change? So I bobby enos a judgment.
- 23:49I saw the count's lit again that lived in a nie came down the
- 23:56door, right in the door and said, awake m caticide till there is
- 24:37no say so say I got to chase, got to church canticide? There
- 24:57is no day, So I say got to show why do I got to
- 25:06change snubbing. I'm wanting to denouncewer chutches cha Chat, denounce some judgment
