- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's sen out to the Ramos Law hotline.
- 0:01Speaker 1: Car accident you need Ramos Law medical doctor and attorney
- 0:04Speaker 1: ramas Law dot com. Jeff Lagweld of ESPN dot com
- 0:07Speaker 1: joined us.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Now, Hello Jeff, morning fellas.
- 0:11Speaker 1: So we're just talking about this earlier. On December fourteenth
- 0:16Speaker 1: of last year, Patrick Mahomes leaves with a knee injury
- 0:20Speaker 1: torn ACL and LCL. He gets that prepared repaired, I
- 0:25Speaker 1: should say, and he is on the field for day
- 0:28Speaker 1: one of OTA's with the Chiefs. A month and three
- 0:32Speaker 1: days later, bo Nix breaks his ankle in the divisional
- 0:36Speaker 1: round of the playoffs. If the Broncos were to start OTAs,
- 0:40Speaker 1: he would not be on the field.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Is that weird?
- 0:45Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I mean, look, I'm obviously I was not a medical
- 0:50Speaker 4: school attendee, but just from watching the video of Mahomes throwing.
- 0:56Speaker 4: And I actually asked team doctor friend of mine for
- 1:02Speaker 4: another team, not the Broncos, but if he had seen
- 1:05Speaker 4: the video, and he said he had, and he said
- 1:08Speaker 4: he would be very surprised if Mahomes could play week one.
- 1:12Speaker 4: So I think, you know, just because the guys on
- 1:14Speaker 4: the field doesn't always mean you know it just means
- 1:18Speaker 4: that he probably pushed for it, wanted to be out
- 1:22Speaker 4: there to show his teammates or himself. A lot of
- 1:27Speaker 4: times guys just want a reward for all the rehab
- 1:30Speaker 4: because it's so you know, alone and by yourself and
- 1:36Speaker 4: just grinding through the rehab with your the trainers and everything.
- 1:41Speaker 4: So sometimes the guys just want a little reward and
- 1:45Speaker 4: they give it to him. But I don't think we
- 1:48Speaker 4: can take anything by who participates right now. I think
- 1:52Speaker 4: the opening of camp is really the indication of where
- 1:56Speaker 4: things are.
- 1:58Speaker 3: It's just it's it's pretty interesting. Jeff, here's I guess
- 2:01Speaker 3: the spuddy sense in me just get a little there's
- 2:07Speaker 3: a little bit behind schedule. Maybe maybe not, but maybe
- 2:10Speaker 3: you know it's it's one of those it's one of
- 2:12Speaker 3: those kind of spidey sense things that you can't really explain.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm probably worried about nothing.
- 2:18Speaker 4: No, I mean, most like, they don't do a second
- 2:20Speaker 4: surgery if nothing's going on. I mean, if you're just recovering,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, fine, they don't do a second procedure, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 4: no matter how they frame it, which and they have
- 2:34Speaker 4: framed it as if, uh, you know, it was a
- 2:37Speaker 4: given from.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The start that it's he's just one.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Of several players who had a clean up procedure all
- 2:45Speaker 4: of these things. But you know, I I sort of
- 2:49Speaker 4: live in the beat writer world of simplicity. When I
- 2:53Speaker 4: see him with my own eyes doing quarterback things, then
- 2:58Speaker 4: I'll I'll say, Okay, he's you know, he's back. He's fine,
- 3:04Speaker 4: he's doing his thing. But you know, I don't think
- 3:07Speaker 4: we're gonna see much of that in the OTAs next
- 3:10Speaker 4: week or the week after. Maybe, you know, mini camp
- 3:15Speaker 4: is what I keep hearing. Then they let him do
- 3:17Speaker 4: some limited work, you know, and maybe in seven on seven,
- 3:21Speaker 4: eleven on eleven something. But I keep hearing the mini
- 3:25Speaker 4: camp which is third week of June, that he may
- 3:28Speaker 4: do something.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Vic's doing a thing with Vaughon tonight, big charity thing,
- 3:32Speaker 3: which is awesome.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I saw him. I saw Vaughn last night.
- 3:35Speaker 3: YEP register registory, read the whole thing.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Oh, he's trying hard. He's trying hard.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Outside of ramming his car through the gate and parking
- 3:48Speaker 3: it in the lot, it feels like he's done just
- 3:50Speaker 3: about every parachuting into the practice facility right out out
- 3:54Speaker 3: of Centennial. Feels like he's doing everything else just to
- 3:57Speaker 3: try to get a last taste with the Orange and Blue.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The Broncos need a restraining leader, Jess.
- 4:02Speaker 2: You know it. Maybe.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Look, I've known Von since he was since he came
- 4:07Speaker 4: into the draft, you know, twenty eleven. So We've traveled
- 4:11Speaker 4: a lot of road together. I've talked to him hundreds
- 4:16Speaker 4: of times, you know, texts or whatever. But this isn't phony.
- 4:23Speaker 4: I mean, he really, really really would like them to
- 4:27Speaker 4: give him the proverbial last ride. I just don't know
- 4:30Speaker 4: that they have the snaps to do it. And you know,
- 4:34Speaker 4: I'm going to be intrigued. Other teams need a pass rusher,
- 4:38Speaker 4: and he'll have some options when camp gets closer.
- 4:43Speaker 1: But what's the argument against the depth of having him though?
- 4:46Speaker 4: If you're the Broncos, you know, I think it's it's
- 4:50Speaker 4: just Sean Payton's gauge on what does it do to
- 4:53Speaker 4: the locker room? If those third down snaps? You know,
- 5:00Speaker 4: are you going to be able to play Cooper, Benito
- 5:02Speaker 4: and Vaughn at the same time?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Right?
- 5:04Speaker 4: And that you know, where do those snaps come from?
- 5:08Speaker 4: Are people upset? You just paid Nick Benino one hundred
- 5:12Speaker 4: million dollars and he is the pass rusher for the Broncos.
- 5:16Speaker 4: There's no question even Vaughn says that. Yeah, I mean
- 5:20Speaker 4: Vn basically is framing this that he played thirty seven
- 5:25Speaker 4: percent of the snaps for the Commanders last year and
- 5:28Speaker 4: that he could play thirty percent of the snaps for
- 5:32Speaker 4: the Broncos. And it's really who doesn't get those thirty
- 5:37Speaker 4: percent of snaps? And are you getting developmentally? You know,
- 5:42Speaker 4: all of it just how it fits. And but I
- 5:45Speaker 4: did find it interesting that he admitted he had lobbied
- 5:49Speaker 4: Seawan at that flag football event in Los Angeles and
- 5:55Speaker 4: wasn't kidding around.
- 5:56Speaker 2: He was really lobbying him to try. So you know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: again it's it's in some.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Ways tough to see because he wants something that that
- 6:08Speaker 4: may not be able to work out. You know, he
- 6:10Speaker 4: wants a DeMarcus where championship run. You know, at the
- 6:17Speaker 4: at the tail end of his career. DeMarcus played one
- 6:19Speaker 4: more year after the Super Bowl. But he wants that vibe.
- 6:25Speaker 4: You know how DeMarcus was looked at in the Broncos
- 6:28Speaker 4: locker room those years, his standing in the league.
- 6:32Speaker 2: You know all of it.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And you know, on a personal level, I know Vaughn
- 6:36Speaker 4: wants to be in the top ten sacks all time,
- 6:41Speaker 4: and he's he's sitting at thirteen. He could get in
- 6:43Speaker 4: the top ten with like six or seven. I think,
- 6:46Speaker 4: so all of that's at work. He's thirty seven, And
- 6:51Speaker 4: this is kind of what it looks like when star
- 6:54Speaker 4: players are, you know, nearing the end and they've sort
- 6:58Speaker 4: of come to terms with the clock is ticking.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Jeff Leegel ADT ESPN dot com. All conversations with Legyar
- 7:05Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrial Workers
- 7:07Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight start with the job and with
- 7:10Speaker 1: the career. One thing we're kicking around. If you're just
- 7:13Speaker 1: talking about what will have the bigger potential impact on
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Broncos offense, would you say the bigger potential impact
- 7:22Speaker 1: is the acquisition of Jalen Waddle or the fact that
- 7:26Speaker 1: Davis Webb is now in charge of play calling.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Well, I still say Web's the biggest deal, because we
- 7:33Speaker 4: don't know yet.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Is it going to be.
- 7:37Speaker 4: You know, how much flavor is Davis web going to
- 7:39Speaker 4: be allowed to add? We don't know the answer to
- 7:43Speaker 4: that yet. If they're much quicker before the snap, if
- 7:47Speaker 4: they're much quicker getting plays in, if they sub west
- 7:50Speaker 4: if they move quicker on offense, we know he's having
- 7:55Speaker 4: an impact. And then some of the past concepts we
- 7:59Speaker 4: just got to see and where the run game fits.
- 8:02Speaker 4: You know, are they gonna have halves where they run
- 8:06Speaker 4: the ball three times? You know, after saying all week
- 8:09Speaker 4: we need to run the ball?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Uh?
- 8:11Speaker 4: You know, those types of things we're not going to
- 8:13Speaker 4: know until we see. And you know, I'll be honest
- 8:18Speaker 4: with you. In the league, and awful lot of people
- 8:21Speaker 4: are still skeptical Sean is going to step back far
- 8:26Speaker 4: enough to give Davis a lot of impact. So we
- 8:30Speaker 4: don't know the answers to that yet.
- 8:32Speaker 3: I don't know the answers to what makes a team work,
- 8:34Speaker 3: what doesn't make a team work. Would Sean Payton allow
- 8:39Speaker 3: his quarterback to miss OTAs to fly to Europe to
- 8:43Speaker 3: support his singer songwriter wife for a couple of weeks.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Well, I think it would be a discussion.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I mean, attendance in the off season is a lot
- 8:57Speaker 4: more spotty than.
- 8:58Speaker 3: We're You're probably because I was looking at Herbert. I
- 9:01Speaker 3: know that Harbaugh said, hey, do you need a ride
- 9:03Speaker 3: of the airport, I'll drive you there for Crona. I
- 9:05Speaker 3: don't Yeah, I don't think he needed that. But but
- 9:07Speaker 3: but I mean, does that mean that the Harbaugh and
- 9:10Speaker 3: Herbert are so locked in it's it's no big deal,
- 9:12Speaker 3: is at it?
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:14Speaker 4: And I think look, Shawn has told people he's not
- 9:18Speaker 4: concerned about Bo's injury because Bo doesn't need OTAs you know,
- 9:24Speaker 4: at this point, he's got a good handle on things.
- 9:27Speaker 4: So I think, you know, and a lot of times
- 9:30Speaker 4: when teams say, oh, we had ninety eight percent attendance,
- 9:34Speaker 4: they mean that ninety eight percent of the players showed
- 9:37Speaker 4: up for one or two days a week of odas
- 9:41Speaker 4: you know, there's or the off season conditioning. There's four
- 9:45Speaker 4: days a week of right now conditioning work going on.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Not every player goes to all four days every single week,
- 9:54Speaker 4: right and you know, so there is some of that
- 9:57Speaker 4: at work. Yeah, you'd love the high profile guys to
- 10:01Speaker 4: be around. But let's say if the guard, if the
- 10:05Speaker 4: right guard missed to support his girlfriend, I doubt many
- 10:09Speaker 4: people would notice, you know, but if it's justin Herbert,
- 10:12Speaker 4: you got to explain it a little bit.
- 10:14Speaker 2: So I think there's some of that.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Hey, by the way, Jeff, if you need mouth them out,
- 10:17Speaker 3: don't call me.
- 10:19Speaker 2: No, I would not I know man, I stand alone.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Okay, good, good, Well, it sounds like you had what
- 10:25Speaker 3: moj had about two months ago or a month and
- 10:28Speaker 3: a half ago.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And it's just too much, too much talkie talkie on
- 10:32Speaker 4: the phone. You know, I gotta, I gotta get off
- 10:35Speaker 4: the work hamster wheel.
- 10:37Speaker 2: At some point I got too much. Jeff thought, you
- 10:41Speaker 2: knew you work too much talkie talkie. I gotta just
- 10:45Speaker 2: settle it down a little bit.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Okay, one more talkie talkie then we'll let you go.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Nah, I'm good.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Bill Barnwell he had the best and worst free agent
- 10:54Speaker 1: signings or off season moves, I guess, for every team,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and for his worst. He he listed failing to address
- 11:03Speaker 1: the departure of John Franklin Myers for the Broncos. Now,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I would argue, although it feels less consequential because their
- 11:12Speaker 1: draft picks wards premium, they did use their first pick
- 11:16Speaker 1: on a defensive lineman and Tyler on you dem like,
- 11:20Speaker 1: is that addressing it or not?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Well, I think some of that's the standing of the team.
- 11:25Speaker 4: If that's the worst move you can come up with
- 11:29Speaker 4: for a fourteen win team, I mean, it's all relative.
- 11:32Speaker 4: He's not saying that's the worst move anybody.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Made right right in the league, right.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Saying, this team is pretty settled, and you know of
- 11:44Speaker 4: all the things they did or didn't do in the offseason,
- 11:48Speaker 4: you know that that's a lot of snacks that have
- 11:50Speaker 4: to be filled. That is a question mark. You know
- 11:53Speaker 4: what is that five hundred snats?
- 11:56Speaker 3: And I said that, I said, I want you to
- 11:58Speaker 3: explad on this because I said to Kanoid, in a
- 12:01Speaker 3: team like this where they rotate guys and it's all
- 12:03Speaker 3: for one to one for all, that's awesome, But you
- 12:05Speaker 3: never know how much that won. He's a big piece
- 12:08Speaker 3: because he's the big ugly in the middle. You never
- 12:11Speaker 3: know how that one cog in the entire wheel. You
- 12:14Speaker 3: know what it supports and what it doesn't. And let's
- 12:16Speaker 3: say during the course of a game that the kid
- 12:19Speaker 3: has four losses against a blocking assignment on him that
- 12:24Speaker 3: Myers would win and the kid loses. Is that the
- 12:26Speaker 3: difference in keeping a drive alive a game alive?
- 12:29Speaker 4: I think the answer is yeah. And we don't know
- 12:31Speaker 4: the answer to that right, right, they played Jasa Rique
- 12:37Speaker 4: in those snaps that Franklin Myers didn't play last year.
- 12:41Speaker 4: He's still around. But I'll just say Zach Allen led
- 12:45Speaker 4: the league, led the league, not ahead of Miles Garrett
- 12:49Speaker 4: I had a Will Anderson ahead of everybody in quarterback hits.
- 12:54Speaker 4: And Zach Allen says, if he ever buys a beach house,
- 12:58Speaker 4: he's gonna call it the.
- 12:59Speaker 2: John Franklins house.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah, because that's the kind of impact that Franklin Myers had.
- 13:05Speaker 4: So again that's not a position we talk about. But
- 13:09Speaker 4: those I always look at off seasons are how do
- 13:12Speaker 4: you replace the snaps?
- 13:14Speaker 2: Not the people as it were.
- 13:16Speaker 4: You know that's important, but those are snaps they have
- 13:20Speaker 4: to fill, and as they go to camp, other than
- 13:24Speaker 4: bo Nix's ankle, that's probably the biggest question they have
- 13:28Speaker 4: on the field.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Jeff, lasting for you. So at Commander's camp, Javon Kinlaw
- 13:35Speaker 1: had a sort of new way of using punctuation and
- 13:40Speaker 1: commas where he would just say the S word. It
- 13:42Speaker 1: sounded like this, yeah, we CRUs.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Mother, excuse my language, but yeah, all the way he
- 13:48Speaker 4: can go, Charles Mine, who can go, Kay Levon can go,
- 13:52Speaker 4: Tim Settle, he can go.
- 13:55Speaker 3: He goes on and on and on from there.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I want to ask you, you've been covering this game
- 13:59Speaker 1: for as we play every intro before we talk to
- 14:02Speaker 1: you been covering this game for a while. The most
- 14:04Speaker 1: prolific curse word user that you've covered is.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Ooh, that's an excellent question. Some days it's me sad.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I have to admit my in season behavior is not
- 14:20Speaker 4: always awesome on the profanity front. But I'll say the
- 14:26Speaker 4: funniest is there was a defensive line coach for the
- 14:31Speaker 4: Titans who, away from football, was possibly the nicest human
- 14:37Speaker 4: being I've ever been around, Jim Washburn. But when you
- 14:41Speaker 4: put him on a football field, I'm not sure any
- 14:45Speaker 4: human being.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Could swing profanity like he could.
- 14:50Speaker 4: But it was amazing because away from the field he
- 14:54Speaker 4: was easily one of the five nicest people I've ever
- 14:59Speaker 4: been around in in football. But yeah, he was a
- 15:03Speaker 4: pro pro profanity Greg Lloyd probably of the Steelers way
- 15:08Speaker 4: back wash This is pre Internet, so pre social media,
- 15:13Speaker 4: more common back then when guys weren't on camera all
- 15:16Speaker 4: the time. But Greg Lloyd aired me out a few
- 15:21Speaker 4: times that were, uh, that was pretty impressive.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I'm looking at a picture Jim Washburn, that guy concurse. No,
- 15:28Speaker 1: he just just just buy a phone. That guy he
- 15:31Speaker 1: throws one of them.
- 15:33Speaker 4: One of the nicest people I've ever been around as
- 15:36Speaker 4: a human being, Like if you needed anything, Jim Washburn
- 15:40Speaker 4: would like come fix your car, buy groceries. I mean,
- 15:44Speaker 4: he would do anything for you. Players loved him, but
- 15:48Speaker 4: he said absolutely some of the funniest things I've ever heard.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I once filled in on baseball in Pittsburgh and they
- 15:58Speaker 4: got killed in Montreal.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Well, I was on a road trip with the pirates.
- 16:02Speaker 2: They got killed in Montreal.
- 16:04Speaker 4: They stole the expos stole like fifty seven bases on
- 16:08Speaker 4: Denny Nagel and I kept it on tape for a
- 16:12Speaker 4: long time. But Jim Jim Leland absolutely imploded after the game,
- 16:18Speaker 4: and he was pulling his jersey over his head and
- 16:20Speaker 4: he got stuck and he was cussing as he was
- 16:24Speaker 4: stuck in his jersey spinning around in the room, and
- 16:28Speaker 4: it was hard not to laugh. There's only like three
- 16:31Speaker 4: of us in the room. You're trying not to laugh
- 16:33Speaker 4: because he's furious. But he was stuck in his shirt
- 16:37Speaker 4: spinning around. And at one point I kept the tape forever.
- 16:41Speaker 4: At one point there were nine words in a row
- 16:44Speaker 4: that were just cuss words awesome, with no other words
- 16:49Speaker 4: in between it, and it was It was one of
- 16:51Speaker 4: the most amazing meltdowns.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Ever, did he have a heater lit while he was
- 16:56Speaker 1: doing it?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Oh? God, yes, yeah he had.
- 16:59Speaker 4: He had like the burn arcs on his hand where
- 17:01Speaker 4: he was cupping it in the dugout because he.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Wasn't supposed to smoke.
- 17:05Speaker 4: I came in before BP one time he was smoking
- 17:08Speaker 4: with the patch on.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I was like, dude's the nicotine patch?
- 17:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I said, if you read the box, it says
- 17:14Speaker 4: like your heart will explode if.
- 17:17Speaker 2: You do that. There's like, oh okay, but anyway.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Yeah, no, man, there were nine words in a row.
- 17:25Speaker 4: I had never heard anything like it.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I love it.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I love to hear it one day.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Uh so that is Jeff Legwell ESPN I com joines
- 17:32Speaker 1: every week. Always appreciate the insight, like you.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Thank you, buddy, thanks Fallas will say it.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Stop talking, stop talking too much talking.
- 17:41Speaker 2: My god, he was about to throw nine.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we've all been there though. Dude, he I mean, Jeff,
- 17:49Speaker 3: he is a worker. Yeah, I think the guy. I mean,
- 17:53Speaker 3: he just busts his hump. Something to be said for that.
- 17:56Speaker 1: There is Jim lins Man, by the way, when.
- 18:00Speaker 3: He was dude, there's a voicemail. I don't I gotta
- 18:05Speaker 3: see if it still exists. Guys used to sleep at
- 18:10Speaker 3: the ballpark. You know that he lived at the ballpark.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Just great stuff.
- 18:13Speaker 1: A lot of those guys like that.
