- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. We wanted to let you know that we

- 0:08By the time you hear this, things may have changed, but we
- 0:10hope you enjoy the show. All right, folks, welcome to this installment
- 0:38of Opposition Territory here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest running
- 0:42weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. That's right over ten years strong.
- 0:46We got a great opposition territory discussion coming your way this week. Cannot
- 0:50wait to get into this specific team because of what's on their team right now,
- 0:55how this team may develop and specifically how they may look within their particular
- 0:59division. And I'm talking about the New England Patriots. It's gonna be interesting
- 1:03to see how things manifest themselves with this Patriots team over this twenty twenty three
- 1:07two twenty four season in the AFC East, a prolific division in the game
- 1:14of professional football. So we got a great discussion, a great guest coming
- 1:17your way. Let's get to it, and it is great to have on
- 1:19the show for the very first time, coming to us from Musketfire dot Com.
- 1:23You know we love our fansided sites here at the PSD podcast show,
- 1:27she writes words over there, lots of words, fantastic words about this new
- 1:32England Patriots team. She has none other than Sarah Marshall. How are you
- 1:36doing, Sarah. I'm good. I'm excited to talk about the Patriots with
- 1:40you today, even though you know this this game is a little bit scary,
- 1:44but I am excited. I gotta tell you though, Like it is
- 1:47an exciting time just in general. I think for all football fans, we've
- 1:52got college football right around the corner of the NFL season is going to be
- 1:55starting as well. Training camp. We're in the thick of that rate now,
- 1:57and I think it's just that time of the year where we know falls
- 2:00around the corner. There's a lot of good stuff happening, and like,
- 2:04I just I just can't believe football is like right around the corner here.
- 2:07That's how I always feel every year when football ends, I'm like, oh,
- 2:10the next you know, months are going to take forever. The off
- 2:15season is so long, and then it sneaks up on you and you're like,
- 2:17wait, where did this come from? But why are we here already?
- 2:20Exactly, folks, you can catch Sarah on the Twitter dot com at
- 2:25s marsh xo. I believe that is your Twitter handle there, And she's
- 2:30also doing some great stuff on YouTube as well. If you are into professional
- 2:35wrestling, I know she's been doing a lot of that recently. She has
- 2:37some new England Patriots content up there as well. Where can they find you
- 2:39on the YouTube dot com there, Sarah, um, you can just search
- 2:44my name Sarah Marshall and it should pop up. Awesome. Sounds good.
- 2:47All right, well, let's get into this new England Patriots team, things
- 2:51that have happened during the offseason, what we can expect possibly from them this
- 2:54coming twenty twenty four season. Let's start off by doing a little reflection here
- 3:00as well, because like last year Patriots, they missed the playoffs for the
- 3:05second time in three years. And you know what, while training camp won't
- 3:08let us know how they're going to end up finishing the division, which we're
- 3:13gonna be getting into during the end of our discussion, I'm wondering what the
- 3:16true pulse of the Patriots fan base currently is at the moment after last season,
- 3:23as you're moving forward, what does this fan base really want to logically
- 3:29see from this team first and foremost this coming season. And why well,
- 3:32if you're active on the Twitter machine, you probably know that Boston fans are
- 3:40all over the place. Okay, so this the answer to this question.
- 3:46It really depends on who you ask and who you talk to. So obviously,
- 3:51you know, when it comes to social media, the majority of people
- 3:53are going to be in an age bracket that grew up in the Tom Brady
- 3:58era, so they have incredible high standards for the Patriots, which isn't horrible,
- 4:02but it also can be you know, make this time period that the
- 4:06Patriots are going through absolutely miserable for them. So, um, you know,
- 4:11there are people that want to get rid of Mac Jones already and they
- 4:14don't understand how he's not the second coming of Tom Brady and why don't we
- 4:17have our own Patrick Mahomes, you know. So there's that section. I
- 4:23don't trees, I know, but apparently you think they do. I guess,
- 4:28I don't know. So if you talk to a fan like me that
- 4:30tries to just be optimistic and enjoy the ride, you know, it's obviously
- 4:35not fun to watch them blues or watch the team struggle. But I feel
- 4:39like it's the process, you know, teams go through this. We were
- 4:42so blessed to have twenty years of success that you know, franchises don't even
- 4:47have the luxury of being able to have tens, you know, it's crazy.
- 4:53So with the additions of like Bill O'Brien Adrian Clem, I'm really excited
- 4:58about them coming into coach the offense and I'm just hoping that the offense looks
- 5:02more cohesive, yeah, and more put together, just to be a competitive
- 5:08football team. Again. I don't know if they're going to have, you
- 5:11know, a playoff run. I'm just hoping for a better team, a
- 5:15more competitive team. A winning record would be great. At this point,
- 5:19I just want to see that they're moving forward, you know what. You're
- 5:23talking about his development here, Sarah, and I think it's interesting. It's
- 5:26kind of a good segue talking about specifically the offense and we look, we
- 5:30all know it's an offensive based, in offensive dominated league, and that weapons
- 5:35are just so incredibly important for offenses to be able to move the ball down
- 5:39the field. I know it sounds simplistic, but that is the name of
- 5:42the game in the NFL these days, and for the New England Patriots.
- 5:45They brought in Juju Smith, Schuster, DeVante Parker. He's a decent player
- 5:48from a wide receiver standpoint. But one of the biggest questions I think for
- 5:53me, and I would think for some within Patriots Nation as well, is
- 5:57whether or not Mac Jones actually has enough weapons to generate consistent offensive momentum game
- 6:03after game this season. So I wanted to kind of get your thoughts first
- 6:06and foremost on that the offensive weapons on this team for Mac Jones, of
- 6:11course he needs to develop, but in terms of specifically these offensive weapons,
- 6:15are you happy with them? And I don't know, is it going to
- 6:19be some growing pains? Do you think in terms of Mac Jones and these
- 6:23weapons getting on the same page. What are your thoughts? Yeah, so
- 6:26it's kind of like a conflicted feeling, I think, And you know,
- 6:30like I was just referencing Boston fans, they all want a number one guy,
- 6:33and of course that makes life so much easier for the team. But
- 6:40throughout Patriots history, there weren't many years, even during the Tom Brady era,
- 6:45that they had a very clear cut wide receiver one. You know,
- 6:47there weren't There wasn't consistent consecutive years really that that Brady had a Randy Moss
- 6:53for a lengthy period of time. So you know, we're not in that
- 6:58era anymore, of a quarterback making a former lacrosse player look like the best
- 7:02receiver on the team. So I'm hoping that it's going to get better.
- 7:08And really I was hoping, you know, looking back at even some other
- 7:13young quarterbacks, mentioning Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen Tua. You know, they
- 7:17didn't look phenomenal in their first two seasons. They weren't bad by any means,
- 7:21but once they got in the league wide receiver one in their third season,
- 7:26they started to just like catapult forward. They just started to break out
- 7:30and became great quarterbacks. And so I was really hoping for that same thing
- 7:33for Mac and it's just not happening right there. Yeah. Yeah, So
- 7:40you know, I'm excited about Mike Asiki because he's going to be coming in
- 7:44as more of a receiver than a tight end, hoping that we get to
- 7:48see Born revert back to the production that we saw from him in twenty twenty
- 7:51one. And Hunter Henry and then of course, you know I even wrote
- 7:56here I would like to see them trade for a wide receiver before the trade
- 8:00deadline, and I was really hoping for Judy, but unfortunately we just saw
- 8:03news about Tim Patrick possibly having an injury. So I'm like, Okay,
- 8:07Judy's off the table, yep ye, But yeah, I would like to
- 8:11see him get somebody. Ideally if in a great, you know scenario,
- 8:18I would love to see that he had somebody, but you know, he's
- 8:20got to have to deal with who he has now. I'm definitely a Mike
- 8:24Kissicki fan. You can see this here. We're on Zoos Sarah and Iron
- 8:28Zoom here. You can see this this Penn State poster rate here. And
- 8:31I've always been a Mike Kisicki fan. I think that with what Bill O'Brien
- 8:35is going to be able to implement in terms of his offensive schemes, we
- 8:39are probably going to see Mike Kissicki and the other tight ends really involved in
- 8:43terms of the scheme. Game by game. We know Bill O'Brien it loves
- 8:46to employ the tight end position, you know, not just from a blocking
- 8:52standpoint, but really catching that ball, trying to get yards down the field
- 8:54as well. And I do want to get into Bill O'Brien as well,
- 9:00but in terms of the development also of what we are expecting to see from
- 9:03mac Jones this year as well, like what is he going to need to
- 9:07do this season for the team to have some success. I mean, last
- 9:11year was a second season. It's no lie he struggled, and it's certainly
- 9:15could be argued that those struggles came down to injuries, came down to coaching
- 9:18coaches that are no longer on this team. Now he does have a new
- 9:22offensive coordinator and Bill O'Brien, as I mentioned, all indications that mac Jones
- 9:26is healthy here. So I'm wondering with Patriots fans, the fan base in
- 9:31general, what does a developing third season look like for mac Jones at this
- 9:37point? Sarah, So, the good thing is comparing the attitude of the
- 9:43team and Max specifically from even just a year ago, even in the spring,
- 9:48massively different. Like night and day. Last year, it was very
- 9:52you could tell they were not on board with the Matt Patricia experiment, which
- 9:56I don't blame them, right right, nobody really was except Rebellichick apparently,
- 10:01And so everyone is embracing the Bill O'Brien experience right now, and so that's
- 10:05good. So we're already going in with like a much more positive attitude.
- 10:09Mac is feeling better, it seems, than he did a year ago,
- 10:13and so I think that the big thing is you want to see him be
- 10:16more comfortable with what he's doing, and whether that's just on game day and
- 10:20practice whatever, you just want to see that he has that confidence that he
- 10:24had as a rookie, because that was something that people were even coming at
- 10:26him for being like why is he so confident? Like he's a little cocky.
- 10:30I'm like, I love it, Like that's what you want. So,
- 10:33you know, his confidence was really stripped from him last year, and
- 10:37so I would like to see that come back. And I think, you
- 10:43know, there's no questions regarding his work ethic or his dedication to improving and
- 10:48learning. Those are things that he's constantly praised for by his teammates and his
- 10:52coaches. So I'm just hoping that they can really come together him, him
- 10:56and Bill O'Brien and just create something just better than what we saw last year.
- 11:01I know that that seems easy and there's not a whole lot of room
- 11:05to get worse, right, right, But yeah, yeah, I can
- 11:09remember certain aspects of this Patriots team watching them last year talking you talk,
- 11:15you brought up you know, Matt Patricia, I mean Patricia and Jones,
- 11:18you know, would they would lead It looked like a punchless offense that you
- 11:24know, had to put together just painstakingly long drives to you know, find
- 11:28the end zone and if there was, there could be no margin for air.
- 11:31Basically, so hypothetically speaking, go back to a few games last year,
- 11:37Mac Jones missed a reid or took a sack, or if the team
- 11:39committed a pre snap penalty or had a run play blow up in the backfield,
- 11:43it would just completely derail the drive. How Mac Jones, whether it's
- 11:48through enhanced coaching with Bill O'Brien, is able to not a lot, not
- 11:52not get to that point where one mistake is going to completely derail a drive,
- 11:56Where is going to be able to get back to the drawing board and
- 12:00say, okay, one mistake is not going to absolutely kill us. I
- 12:03think that's going to be absolutely huge for this team. Yeah, and I
- 12:07think some people don't realize that Patricia wasn't only sort of the unofficial official offensive
- 12:15coordinator, he was also the offensive line coach. So the offense was a
- 12:20complete mess and it was a lot of it was at the hands of Matt
- 12:24Patricia, so all you know, the offensive line was a huge liability last
- 12:28year. I mean, I think that Isaiah Wynn had the most penalties out
- 12:31of any offensive lineman in the league. Trent Brown was right behind him.
- 12:35So you know, if you don't have protection or stability from your offensive line,
- 12:41a quarterback is not going to do well. So couple that with the
- 12:43issues between the relationship of Patricia and Jones there it was just a recipe for
- 12:50a mess. Like yeah, there was just no he was doomed to fail
- 12:54from the beginning. So the Bill O'Brien thing is was a huge, huge
- 12:58move and ag and Clem too. It's really cool to see him back because
- 13:01he is a Patriot, was a former Patriot, so he's already familiar and
- 13:05so that's really exciting to see how that's all going to come together. It's
- 13:09very interesting to note too, if mac Jones does rebound in Bill O'Brien's offense,
- 13:16Folks, New England has the means to bolster his supporting cast next year.
- 13:20They're gonna have over one hundred million dollars in available cap space next offseason,
- 13:22so let's keep that in the back of our minds as we're moving forward
- 13:26here. But moving on, I want to talk really about the defensive side
- 13:30of things with you, Sarah, because you know, losing Devin mccorty absolutely
- 13:35hurts the Patriots. I mean, I've heard some back and forth on this.
- 13:39Nobody's going to convince me that it doesn't hurt this team. It stings
- 13:43for the fan base and especially for a locker room that really relied on his
- 13:46leadership. And I do wonder if there's somebody on this team who can replace
- 13:50Devin mccorty from a pure leadership standpoint, not necessarily what he was able to
- 13:56do on the field, but that leadership is going to be sorely missed this
- 14:00coming season. What are your thoughts and do you have any ideas about who
- 14:03that player could possibly be moving forward? Who's gonna step up? Do you
- 14:07think? So? I have three? Oh, all right, let's get
- 14:11him do it. Yes. So we are fortunate that we didn't lose Matthew
- 14:16Slater the same year that we lost Devin mccordy, so we still have that
- 14:20one. You know, classic Patriot Way type of guy. They're a huge
- 14:24locker room leader. Like, if you ever watch any of the videos of
- 14:26the Patriots after they win a game, he is leading everything in the locker
- 14:31room. So I'm glad that he's there, and he could kind of maybe
- 14:35like mentor a groom the next guy to take over. So my three,
- 14:39I would say, or Matthew Judeon. He said recently that he would love
- 14:43to retire a Patriot, and so you know, he's already taken on the
- 14:46leadership role. He's talked about mentoring even young linebackers, so he's already developing
- 14:52into the type of guy, the type of leader that the Patriots love,
- 14:54so I could see him being one. I also have Kyle Dugger, so
- 14:58he's playing on a CA shots here, but oh my gosh, I'm a
- 15:01huge Kyle Dugger fan. And he's already become a captain of the defense.
- 15:05I believe it was last year he was the only one that had the headset
- 15:09in his helmet, So that is a huge sign because it was only his
- 15:11third year and he's already already at that level. And I would say Juan
- 15:16Bentley, So three defensive guys. He's already making an impression. He started
- 15:20off training camp by having like a team huddle where he gave an impassioned speech
- 15:24and it apparently resonated with his teammates because they were all talking about it when
- 15:28they spoke to the media. So I definitely think it's going to continue being
- 15:31a defensive guy. But I think that, yeah, they're they're fortunate that
- 15:35they have a few options there and people that are really that would would have
- 15:41been guys that could have led even during the Brady era with mccordy, So
- 15:46I think that it's going to be an easier transition, even though it is
- 15:48a huge loss. There are some good options there, thankfully. Yeah,
- 15:52there have been there have been so many leaders over the past few years that
- 15:56have left this Patriots team. I mean, what you know, us on
- 16:00the outside world of Patriots Nation, we think what we will of Tom Brady,
- 16:03but he was the leader of the team. I mean, he was
- 16:06one of the greatest to have ever played the game of football. He was
- 16:10that leader for sure. Now Devin mccordy as well. You know, some
- 16:12other gentlemen have left as well in free agency. But to see who actually
- 16:18does step up and take that role, it's going to be absolutely fascinating to
- 16:22watch that for sure, And how that relates to this team playing within the
- 16:27AFC East in that particular divisional structure, because we know the AFC East as
- 16:34is stacked. The conference itself is absolutely stacked as well. Again, it's
- 16:40going to be fascinating to watch this division. Of course, there's the Buffalo
- 16:42Bills. They have certainly been a prolific team over the past few years.
- 16:45Aaron Rodgers now with what looks like to be a developing Jets team, I'm
- 16:49sure Patriots Nation is getting tired of hearing about how Aaron Rodgers is now.
- 16:53Oh he's in the AFC East, Let's watch out for Patriots fans are tired
- 16:59of that at this point, at least on paper, the Jets do seem
- 17:02like they are developing in Miami. They're certainly looking to compete as well.
- 17:06So, Sarah, I'm wondering, like, how how logically competitive do you
- 17:10think that the Patriots are going to be in this AFC East division this coming
- 17:14season? So I want to look back at last season really quick. Yeah.
- 17:18Absolutely. Obviously, when you see a losing record, you kind of
- 17:22just blow off the team. You you don't look at it. I'm one
- 17:25of those people that is like a record is everything, obviously, because if
- 17:30you have a losing record, you're you're not gonna go to the playoffs probably,
- 17:33But if you have a killer record, you know you're a super Bowl
- 17:36favorite. But I really think that you need to look into those wins and
- 17:38losses and see why they want or why they lost, because that can tell
- 17:41you a lot more about how a team is performing than their record can.
- 17:45And with the Patriots, it's easy to be like, Okay, they had
- 17:48a losing record, they played terribly, but they were actually a little bit
- 17:52more competitive than what their record tells you. So of course they were struggling,
- 17:57but there was a handful of game games were they lost by silly mistakes
- 18:02at the end of a game, like I don't want to get into it,
- 18:04but the Raiders game, as heartbreaking as that was, you know,
- 18:10that was the last second, the most miserable thing that ever could have put
- 18:14like my worst nightmare come to light. Right, Yes, But then there
- 18:18was also Romandre Stevenson fumbled on the Cincinnati five yard line with fifty five seconds
- 18:25left in the game. So that was a game they could have won,
- 18:29and they were just closer to winning games than a lot of people realize.
- 18:33I think so coming into this season, obviously, the AFC East is a
- 18:37lot more difficult than it has been for quite some time when the Patriots just
- 18:41dominated it. But even though that's happening, the Patriots are a better team
- 18:45than they were last year too. Obviously, they didn't add a guy like
- 18:48Aaron Rodgers or you know, somebody at that caliber, so they're going to
- 18:53be overlooked. But the good thing is, even though the Patriots have kind
- 18:57of fallen down in the division, they haven't really been dominated by any of
- 19:03the AFC East teams, with the exception of that Bills. Yeah, playoff
- 19:07game another one that I don't want to get into right because that was that's
- 19:11a rough one too. It still hurts, yes, um, but you
- 19:15know so, like, of course I'm concerned about that, but I think
- 19:19they've handled themselves pretty well. So as far as the AFC East goes.
- 19:22I'm not one of those people that think, you know, the sky is
- 19:26falling that Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are going to come stomping through to the
- 19:30super Bowl. I don't say that, um, but the AFC, Yeah,
- 19:34it's it's going to be interesting. I It's it's crazy to see the
- 19:38shift because for a couple of years it was the NFC. Now we're back
- 19:41to the AFC. So for the division, do I think they're gonna win?
- 19:45No, But I also don't think that they're going to be last,
- 19:48which a lot of people are already saying that they're going to be fourth.
- 19:52I don't. I don't see that happening any given Sunday, folks. Anything
- 19:55can happen in this league. Injuries can derail team season. You never know
- 19:59what can happen. It's going to be interesting to watch for sure. And
- 20:02again, folks, we are talking to Sarah Marshall from Musketfire dot com over
- 20:07at Fansided. You can follow her on the Twitter dot com at s marsh
- 20:11exo. She is a great great follow and check her out on her YouTube
- 20:15channel as well. Just search out Sarah Marshall on YouTube. So we're gonna
- 20:21get into a segment that we have been enjoying doing recently here on our Opposition
- 20:25Territory pod, the Standout and Stepped on segment. So first and foremost,
- 20:30we're gonna we're gonna start with the standouts here. So if you can,
- 20:33Sarah, please give me two players that you think are going to be a
- 20:37standout this coming season on the Patriots roster. Who are those two individuals and
- 20:41why? So I think the easiest one to pick, you know, I
- 20:45think anyone would say this where Mondre Stevenson. There you go. Yeah,
- 20:48big fan of Vermondre, and this is possibly going to be other than his
- 20:53you know, last season was a breakout season, but now it's all on
- 20:56him this year. We'd lost Damien Harris in free agency, James Robinson came
- 21:00in and spent a day or two, got a beer in Boston, and
- 21:03then was shipped out, So it's all on Ramondre now. So I think
- 21:07that we're going to see him break out. I think, you know,
- 21:11he was the first running back since le Garrett Blunt I think in twenty eighteen
- 21:15to have hit a thousand yards on the ground last year, so I think
- 21:18we're just going to see more of that. He got heavily involved into the
- 21:21passing game last season as well, so I think we're gonna see that more
- 21:26too, because Jones has a comfort level with him as well. And on
- 21:30the defensive side, I'm a big fan of Jabrill Peppers. I was so
- 21:33excited when they signed him in free agency, and I think he's kind of
- 21:37an under the radar type of guy. And if you look at a stats
- 21:40room last year, you're not going to be blown away. You're not going
- 21:41to be impressed necessarily. But he's a hard hitter, he's been great on
- 21:47special teams. He had a few like great moments last year, and Belichick
- 21:52has already raved about him coming into this season, like and he's not the
- 21:56type of coach that does that often. So if he's raving about you and
- 22:00talk about how great you are and how great your off season to spend,
- 22:03then all right, you got to expect something magical to happen, because Belichick
- 22:07is not one to do that. He didn't even do it with Tom Brady,
- 22:08right, Yeah, so I think that he's going to be a sneaky
- 22:12good guy on the defense this year. Okay, all right, now,
- 22:15if you can give me two players you think are gonna get stepped on throughout
- 22:21the course of the coming season, who are those players? And why this
- 22:25is more difficult because I am an optimist st at heart Curry football. Yeah,
- 22:30so I try not to see the negative. But if I had to
- 22:33choose, the easiest one on the defense is going to be Miles Bryant,
- 22:37and I hate to do it because people pile on him a lot and I
- 22:40feel bad for the guy. But the quarterbacks are stepping up. We got
- 22:42Christen Gonzales in the draft. We have Jonathan Jones playing on the outside again,
- 22:48Marcus Jones, Jack Jones, we have all the Joneses ye in the
- 22:51backfield. So I think that Miles Bryant is going to kind of fall to
- 22:56the side. And of course he did have some big slip ups last year
- 22:59that were detrimental to the defense doing bad things, So I think that is
- 23:04going to be a problem. And if I have to choose on offense,
- 23:08it pains me to say, but I am a little bit concerned with Trent
- 23:11Brown. He was one of the biggest issues on the offensive line last year,
- 23:17along with Isaiah Wynn, who is now a dolphin, And there was
- 23:21some sort of weirdness going on with Trent Brown. To start mini camp,
- 23:25he didn't show up. It was said that because his flight was canceled with
- 23:27any never showed up. So I have no idea what's going on with him.
- 23:30He apparently looks great, but we need him to be like fully focused
- 23:37and checked into what the Patriots are doing and if that isn't the case,
- 23:41and I think we might have a season that looks very similar to how we
- 23:45performed last year, which we can't have that happen because we need the protection
- 23:48on Mac Jones absolutely, absolutely again, folks. Sarah Marshall from Musketfire dot
- 23:56Com. Sarah, it was great talking to you for the first time here
- 23:59talking about this new England Patriots team, what's going to happen the AFC East
- 24:02Division, just as well as his team overall. I would love to have
- 24:04you on the show again. Come back and join us down the road,
- 24:07my friend. Thank you so much for having me. I'd love to to
- 24:08come back. There was great talking to Sarah for the first time. Really
- 24:12enjoyed the conversation. And I think that general vibe is that, you know,
- 24:18where Mac Jones goes from an offensive perspective in terms of his development,
- 24:22is where this Patriots offense certainly is going to go. I know it may
- 24:26sound like common sense, but yes, he's got to get the ball to
- 24:29the weapons that they do have down the field. You know, I'm not
- 24:33sure that three yard outs or five yard outs are really going to be cutting
- 24:36it in terms of trying to sustain long drives. As I mentioned during our
- 24:41discussion, we saw last year one little hiccup on a drive and it would
- 24:45completely derail everything. Mac Jones needs to develop more from a mental standpoint in
- 24:51order to get his team into a good offensive position throughout this coming season.
- 24:55So that being said, it was great talking to Sarah again. And make
