- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads, the
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company and Neurolink.
- 0:13I'm your host, Will Walden. At precisely 4:37 PM Central
- 0:18time, the massive 403 foot tall Starship system Block 2 roared
- 0:23to life. Now this is powered by 33 Raptor
- 0:26engines. the Super Heavy booster lifted off the pad with what
- 0:30SpaceX described as a nominal ascent for the first phase of
- 0:35the mission. Everything seemed to go
- 0:36according to plan. The booster separated cleanly
- 0:39from the upper stage and what is known as a hot stage separation
- 0:42where the upper stages engines ignite just as the booster
- 0:46finishes its roll. Now shortly after separation
- 0:48though, the Super Heavy booster executed a boost back burn,
- 0:52relighting 12 of its 13 planned engines to begin its return to
- 0:57the launch site. Now in a moment.
- 0:59This showcased the company's reusability strides.
- 1:01The booster performed a controlled descent through its
- 1:05actual plume that flew it to where it was in almost space in
- 1:11a reignited all thirteen of its central engines for the landing
- 1:15phase. It successfully slowed itself
- 1:17down and precisely maneuvered onto the chopstick arms of
- 1:22Spacex's launch and couch tower, the Mecca Zilla.
- 1:27Now. This marked only the second time
- 1:28that a Super Heavy booster had been caught using this method, a
- 1:32huge achievement for the company's goal of reusing the
- 1:36Super Heavy boosters now. Meanwhile, the upper stage of
- 1:39Starship carried on with its portion of the mission.
- 1:42The spacecraft, which is powered by 6 Raptor engines, began its
- 1:46ascent burn towards space. The PLAN sequence seemed on
- 1:49track until approximately 8 1/2 minutes into the flight, when
- 1:53telemetry from the vehicle abruptly ceased.
- 1:56Initial data suggests that a fire broke out in the AF section
- 1:59of the spacecraft, ultimately leading to SpaceX describing it
- 2:03as a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly, or a RED, which is
- 2:07a technical term for basically an explosion.
- 2:11Now, observers as far as the Turks and Caicos Islands
- 2:15reported seeing the upper stage break apart in a dramatic
- 2:19display, sort of like fireworks over the Atlantic Ocean.
- 2:23Now, the cause of the explosion is believed to be a propellant
- 2:26lake. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk
- 2:29provided further insights just hours after the flight, stating
- 2:33via X preliminary indication is that we had an oxygen slash fuel
- 2:38leak in the cavity above the ship engine firewall.
- 2:42It was large enough to build pressure in excess of the vent
- 2:45capacity. He also indicated plans for
- 2:47improvements, including adding fire suppression systems to the
- 2:50affected area and expanding vent capacity to prevent similar
- 2:54incidents in the future. Musk said nothing so far suggest
- 2:58pushing next launch past next month.
- 3:01Now, despite the loss of the upper stage, the Starship system
- 3:04operated within the boundaries of its designated launch
- 3:07corridor, an area specifically designed to protect public
- 3:10safety on the ground, in the air and at sea.
- 3:13And according to SpaceX, any surviving debris would have
- 3:16fallen into a predetermined hazard area.
- 3:19The US Federal Aviation Administration, or the FAA,
- 3:23which Overseas Space Flight Safety briefly rerouted air
- 3:27traffic in the vicinity but confirm that normal operations
- 3:31resume shortly afterwards. Now the set back has not slowed
- 3:34SpaceX though company has applied for permission to launch
- 3:37Starship up to 25 times this year, and it's determined to get
- 3:41this design operational and reliable.
- 3:45SpaceX is already preparing the hardware for the 8th flight
- 3:48test, with both the booster and the upper stage undergoing pre
- 3:51launch testing. This rapid iteration process is
- 3:54a cornerstone of Spacex's approach to developing what
- 3:57envisions is a fully reusable space transport system capable
- 4:01of supporting missions to Mars and beyond.
- 4:05Now, the Starship program, which aims to make life multi
- 4:07planetary, continues to be the most powerful rocket ever
- 4:11constructed. Each flight test provides
- 4:14critical data that informs future improvements.
- 4:17SpaceX has already begun reviewing the data from Flight 7
- 4:20to determine the precise cause of the anomaly.
- 4:23This review will be conducted in the collaboration with the FAA
- 4:26and the findings will be used to implement corrective actions for
- 4:29subsequent missions. Now the scale of the explosion
- 4:32though significant, it's not unusual for a development stage
- 4:35spacecraft of this complexity. Starship, which is powered by
- 4:39liquid oxygen and liquid methane, represents A next
- 4:42generation design focused on full reusability.
- 4:45The integration of the booster successful return and catch
- 4:48mechanism with the upper stages mission to space is a
- 4:51challenging engineering fee. The SpaceX continues to revine
- 4:54with each test flight. Now Spacex's progress and
- 4:59reusability has been steady, particularly with the success of
- 5:03the Super Heavy booster. Catching a rocket stage with the
- 5:06launch towers arms reduces the need for ocean landings or
- 5:08barges, which is a method used for the Falcon 9 rocket and also
- 5:13Blue Origins New Glen rocket. This approach aligns with
- 5:16Spacex's overreaching goal of reducing the cost of space
- 5:19travel and making high frequency launches more economically
- 5:22viable. Now, the decision to conduct a
- 5:25hot stage separation is another example of the program's
- 5:28innovative approach. This method increases efficiency
- 5:31by reducing the time required for stage separation also
- 5:34introduces new technological challenges.
- 5:37SpaceX engineers will likely focus on how the hostage
- 5:40separation is Subsequent ignition of the upper stage
- 5:42engines may have contributed to this anomaly.
- 5:45The aftermath of the Starship explosion has drawn attention
- 5:49not only for the fiery upper stage, but also for what it
- 5:52means for the broader mission of SpaceX.
- 5:55Musk's remarks suggest that SpaceX remains undeterred.
- 5:58They're going to keep going forward, and it's important to
- 6:01learn from these failures. The rapid pace of testing allows
- 6:04the company to iterate quickly, addressing issues and
- 6:07implementing fixes in a matter of weeks rather than months.
- 6:11Now, SpaceX analyzes the telemetry and video data from
- 6:14Flight 7. The lessons learned will
- 6:16undoubtedly shape the design and procedures for future launches.
- 6:21Now must Comments about fire suppression and event capacity
- 6:24suggest that changes will be made to prevent similar
- 6:27incidents from occurring in the future.
- 6:29These adjustments, while technical, are crucial for

- 7:02Now, the high stakes game of Super Heavy rockets is real.
- 7:08The rocket is central to several of the company's key missions,
- 7:12including deploying the next generation of Starling
- 7:15satellites and conducting missions for NASA.
- 7:18Starship is slated to play a pivotal role in the art of this
- 7:22program, which aims to return humans to the moon later this
- 7:24decade. Reminder of the challenges with
- 7:27all rocketry. Every test flight is a balance
- 7:29between risk and reward, with a potential for groundbreaking
- 7:32achievements often accompanied by groundbreaking setbacks like
- 7:37maybe a giant rocket blowing up over the ocean.
- 7:40But for SpaceX, the path to a fully reusable space
- 7:43transportation system is paved with lessons learned from both
