Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Back home, the Marory party facing these fresh allegations of
- 0:03Speaker 1: using personal information collected for the census and the COVID
- 0:06Speaker 1: immunization program to help their election campaign. They deny everything
- 0:10Speaker 1: but stats New Zealand has appointed and investigated the Privacy
- 0:13Speaker 1: commissioners involved past a complaint onto the police. I think
- 0:15Speaker 1: the Labour Party yesterday had a visit to the police
- 0:18Speaker 1: as well. A political commentator, Peter Dunns with us on
- 0:20Speaker 1: all of this, Peter Morning, Morning mate. At this stage,
- 0:23Speaker 1: given the various strands we've got, does it pass the
- 0:26Speaker 1: pub test or not?
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's beginning to look a bit dodgy. We don't know
- 0:31Speaker 2: precisely what the allegations are, who did what, when and how,
- 0:34Speaker 2: but there's a bit of a smell beginning to emerge
- 0:37Speaker 2: about it. I think more for the fact of the
- 0:40Speaker 2: way people are reacting that you've colag you say, various
- 0:43Speaker 2: potential inquiries underway. As you talked this morning of the
- 0:46Speaker 2: Order to General being involved in both the politicians all
- 0:48Speaker 2: took knowing quite carefully around the edge of us. That
- 0:51Speaker 2: suggests that that concerned that there's something there that needs
- 0:54Speaker 2: to be inquired into as well. So it's beginning to
- 0:56Speaker 2: talk a little bit, a little bit squiffic.
- 0:58Speaker 1: If you go back and I remember raising it on
- 1:00Speaker 1: the show at the time, when you have a Mariah
- 1:03Speaker 1: the chief executive of which turns out to be a candidate,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and that Mariah then turns into a polling booth, that
- 1:09Speaker 1: alone just I mean, there's nothing illegal about it, obviously,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but that alone doesn't pass the test either, does it?
- 1:16Speaker 2: No, I think, And I think that's probably the core
- 1:18Speaker 2: of the problem, because we don't know what the I
- 1:20Speaker 2: imaginations were, if there were any, but sort of the
- 1:23Speaker 2: close link to the Maria candidate and to party mari
- 1:28Speaker 2: all just starts to look for a little bit too convenient.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And that's the problem here. It's the perception off and
- 1:33Speaker 2: rather than reality that dooms people.
- 1:37Speaker 1: You see, you've got a whole lot of little things,
- 1:38Speaker 1: like you're watching a video of the person saying, come
- 1:40Speaker 1: and get your vex jab. But the person telling you
- 1:42Speaker 1: to come and get your vex jab and we can
- 1:43Speaker 1: get some grocery vouchers is wearing a married party T shirt.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So is the married party T shirt. The problem is
- 1:49Speaker 1: the grocery vouchers. The problem. You see what I'm saying,
- 1:51Speaker 1: you've got You've got all sorts of sort of rules
- 1:53Speaker 1: potentially being breached here or not breach, depending on which
- 1:56Speaker 1: side of the argument you're on.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yes, And I think this this is where the thing
- 2:00Speaker 2: gets a bit tricky because you've also got the argument
- 2:04Speaker 2: put up I think by god Tamer Harry that this
- 2:06Speaker 2: is just the traditional concept of car and you know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it's no big deal. And I think the risk here
- 2:13Speaker 2: is that this turns into a sort of a Mari
- 2:17Speaker 2: party tea conger versus the rest of the zealanty hunger
- 2:21Speaker 2: and it's a very divisive situation. They easily spin off
- 2:25Speaker 2: this to their constituents that they are just being picked
- 2:28Speaker 2: on and this is the white system sort of attacking them.
- 2:31Speaker 2: That's the sort of thing that White City's been talking
- 2:34Speaker 2: about a bit of late. So, but this is going
- 2:36Speaker 2: to be handled with a degree of sensitivity. It is wrongdoing.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It needs to be found out and how to account.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's got to be done in a way that doesn't
- 2:43Speaker 2: look like we're sort of, you know, again the colonizers
- 2:47Speaker 2: victimizing the thing of the fee.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But then you've got the legal side of the equation,
- 2:51Speaker 1: because I mean people gave I mean the sensus, people
- 2:53Speaker 1: gave out warriors, sica's for God's sake to fill it
- 2:55Speaker 1: out and all those sort of things. But having said that,
- 2:57Speaker 1: if you use census information and or electoral role information
- 3:02Speaker 1: and you punch out ads on texts and you don't
- 3:04Speaker 1: do it legally, that's when lawyers get involved, isn't it potentially?
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, And the Electric Act and the legislation and government
- 3:13Speaker 2: the collection of information for the sensors are both quite
- 3:16Speaker 2: specific about how they can and cannot be used for
- 3:19Speaker 2: electrical purposes. I remember at the time they were being
- 3:22Speaker 2: developed there was a lot of discussion about making sure
- 3:25Speaker 2: that political parties had legitimate access to the data in
- 3:29Speaker 2: terms of the information, but how it was to be
- 3:32Speaker 2: used was of great concern because there are massive personal
- 3:36Speaker 2: privacies just involved.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, all right, pet go well, appreciate it very much.
