Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Resurrecting the Ancient Knowledge of the Various Planes and Parts of the Being

- 0:00In the Kina Upanishad, the powers of the physical plane,
- 0:05the vital plane, and the mental plane all believe they are
- 0:09predominant and can wield their power to achieve whatever they
- 0:13want. These powers are embodied in the
- 0:16form of Agni on the physical plane, Yu on the vital plane,
- 0:21and Indra on the mental plane. The Upanishad confronts these
- 0:26powers with a power they cannot recognize.
- 0:30They try to use their native force against this power, but
- 0:33they all fail. They were able to approach the
- 0:37Eternal with the mental power coming closest to that
- 0:40realization. It is interesting to note that
- 0:44the Rishi of the Upanishad here recognizes different planes and
- 0:49powers of the being and distinguishes them by their
- 0:52native force of action. Reference.
- 0:55Srioro, Bindo. The Upanishads.
- 0:57Kino Upanishad In the titanium Upanishad there is a very clear
- 1:04outline of the planes that make up the human existence.
- 1:08The seeker systematically enhances his understanding as he
- 1:12first realizes the physical plane as the divine.
- 1:16This is an incomplete knowledge, he continues, and recognizes the
- 1:21vital plane. This too is not the final
- 1:25answer. He then recognizes the mental
- 1:29plane and thereafter the knowledge plane.
- 1:32Eventually he comes to recognize the plane of Bliss Ananda, which
- 1:37is an aspect of the triune nature of the Supreme Satchit
- 1:41Ananda Reference. Sri Robinda.
- 1:45The Upanishads, Titaria, Upanishad.
- 1:48Brugu Valley. The Brahmananda Valley makes
- 1:53this distinction even more clear.
- 1:56Quote Now there is a second and inner self which is other than
- 2:01this, that is of the substance of food, and it is made of the
- 2:04vital stuff called prana. And the self of prana filleth
- 2:10the self of food. Now the self of prana is made in
- 2:14the image of a man. End Quote.
- 2:18It continues with a further elucidation of the 2nd and inner
- 2:22self-made of mind. The recitation continues with
- 2:26the acknowledgement that there is yet a further inner self-made
- 2:29of knowledge. And yet this is not complete
- 2:33either as there is the Self of Ananda, the bliss of existence
- 2:38reference Sri Aurobindo, the Upanishads, Titiria, Upanishad,
- 2:44Brahmananda Valley, other Upanishads describe in depth of
- 2:49various elements that make up the human being.
- 2:52Much of this knowledge has been obscured under the pressure of
- 2:55the rise of the materialism of the West which has hypnotized
- 2:59the world in recent times. This is LED further to the type
- 3:04of confusion that Sri Robindo describes about the existence,
- 3:08role and significance of the soul in evolution and its
- 3:13primacy compared to the external being of mind, life and body.
- 3:19Sri Robindo writes quote. People do not understand what I
- 3:24mean by the psychic being because the word psychic has
- 3:27been used in English to mean anything of the inner mental,
- 3:31inner vital or inner physical, or anything abnormal or a cult,
- 3:36or even the more subtle movements of the outer being all
- 3:39in a jumble. Also a cult phenomena are often
- 3:43called psychic. The distinction between these
- 3:46different parts of the being is unknown even in India.
- 3:50The old knowledge of the Upanishads in which they are
- 3:53distinguished has been lost. The Jeev Atman, the psychic
- 3:58being Perusha, Antar Atman, the Manomaya Perusha, the Pranamaya
- 4:03Perusha are all confused together.
