- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is Steve Downs, the voice of Master Chief, Spartan 1-1-7.
- 0:08[SPEAKER_01]: With an incoming message for Ryan Green and all, listen to the podcast, it just works.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_01]: Let's finish the fight.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_01]: Listen up.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Chief, out.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: I am your host Ryan, and today is yet another special episode as we talk about the one and only Star Fox for this switch to a game I'm very excited to talk about today.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: I was excited for the release leading up to it as you guys have heard through the Nintendo Direct Reaction Star Fox Direct Reaction and obviously I played the demo since the last podcast and the game has now released.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: I've played it for about
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think six hours on launch day, between it coming out last night at 9 p.m. and today.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: So about five to six hours in total and it just finished the first run of the campaign.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: So I am rolling the credits right now.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: I've played the online multiplayer for about an hour, and I would love to talk about the game today.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: But before we get started, if you didn't already know, I love Star Fox.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time, and the 3D version was an amazing remake in my opinion.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: And between the characters, the gameplay, the world, just like so much about this franchise means a lot to me, the music, like it just immediately takes me back to a time, and then with Star Fox adventures and then later assault and command, all of them, I played them all.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: Besides zero, because I thought the gameplay was, or the controls were just a bismal I didn't even bother, which sucks because the game actually looks really good.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, huge Star Fox fan Star Fox adventures was actually my favorite just because like I'm a huge sucker for dinosaurs as we know and I thought it was such a badass departure for what we already were used to and I thought you know Fox going on this adventure was really cool literally um but yeah so obviously Star Fox 64 is huge that's the game that we're kind of focusing on as we move into the remake.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: Which is the bulk of this episode.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it was a great game when it came out.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's Well regarded all around.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's a very fast game, but it does have paths that you can take Which allow you to unlock different levels and experience different Plot threads that are all pretty Lose back in the day, but now with cutscenes.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's been expanded a bit with a remake So yeah Star Fox is a great franchise that I think has been
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: not poorly handled, but like, in terms of releases could have been better, like adventures definitely also deserves like a re-release, even if it's just like a 60fps, you know, like just just simple stuff, um,
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just a tremendous game.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, today we're talking about the remake.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just jump into it.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_00]: I am so excited to get into it.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: The remake's great.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, you know, obviously I was excited because of what I just said, but also leading up to it as you guys have heard.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: With the time I've put into it.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think the game is amazing.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think for the price point.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's really good.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's 50 bucks digitally and I think 60 retail or something like that.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: It could be wrong But ultimately just an outstanding game
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: that deserves a lot of credit.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's a remake of Star Fox 64, essentially, and I think one of the interesting things about it is, you know, it's developed third party.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: So it's from Vlon Studios, pretty unknown developer and in my gaming knowledge, but they did work on Mario Kart live homes
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: So they did have a relationship in Nintendo and honestly Mario Kart live was like a cool gimmick For kids, and I think families, especially I think it came out like during COVID, so yeah 2020.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah came out during COVID people were at home But really building their own Mario Kart race courses.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: So
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: I get the hype behind that back in the day, but seeing this studio completely and faithfully remake and completely reimagined essentially Star Fox 64, which is a reimagining of the original Star Fox on Super Nintendo.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just a lot of blended reimagining that lead to this remake we're talking about today.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: One of the things we talked about as well is like the character models for Fox and Crew.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: At first they were kind of like,
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: Really hard to get used to especially when you're when you think of Fox me cloud in his team Like you think of them in a certain way, especially if you played like smash brothers with the Fox and Falco So like you always have like these character designs in your head of what they would look like and now they basically change it to kind of mimic the puppets that they were using to advertise and promote the original game
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: it actually pays off in my opinion i think the designs are actually great i think it's a great look for these characters i do think the voice acting is good but could be like enunciated a little bit more when they're talking um
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is about it, but there is something that does feel a tad off, but I still love the characters.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: One of the interesting complaints is that Falco is like an asshole, but I don't know, Falco is always kind of been a dick.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's like your friend that's a dick, but at the end of the day they're competitiveness with you, the rivalry, pushes you to be better.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of how I see Falco when it comes to Fox, and I think that's really shown in full force here.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: One of the other things that's kind of critiqued is the fact that Fox is kind of when you're talking to constantly talking and reminding general pepper about Like hey, make sure you're ready to pay us for this work I don't really understand that complaint because at the end of the day there are mercenaries like Han Solo literally talks about getting paid all the time And he's one of the coolest characters ever as a smuggler
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: Borderline mercenary at that point So I don't know I feel like it's kind of like a nothing complaint, but as far as the voice acting goes It's great character designs are great and I kind of really wanted to knock that out first because
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was like my main concern besides another one I'll bring up now is the game is essentially campaign wise, a one for one remake of the game, completely re-envisioned with brand new graphics, texture, I mean just the whole nine yards in terms of what you're visually seeing.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: the gameplay is even more fluid.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's really nice.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's what you remember.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: So if you've played the games originally, you're going to feel right at home like nothing changed.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: And for some people that's good and for some people that's not going to be great for me personally.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: Once they showed off the game, I'm like, okay, it's a remake, so I wanted to play like a remake and it does and I'm really happy with that So for me it's not an issue.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: I do hope though with V-Lon Studios clearly doing a good job with their engine and making this game It building it from the ground up that we do get
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: A sequel.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think this game definitely needs a sequel.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: They have built it up so well to move on and I think one of my biggest disappointment with the game is the fact that like there's no new levels so there's 15 levels
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: those are all the paths that you can play from the original game.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: I would have loved like a brand new path to be created for this game that still leads to venom to fighting andross.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: I definitely think there could have been more there.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not to say that the game's bad or anything, I still think it's great, and I can't wait to do all the paths, but
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of found it interesting that that was the route that they went in my opinion.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was like a bold decision essentially because I think this game would have benefited more not only for replayability but just to give fans a taste of like hey here's some original ideas and here's what we can do with these amazing characters in the story we're trying to tell here that's based off the original development team.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm a little a little bummed out about that
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: But like I mentioned earlier, I played the multiplayer for about an hour.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: So the multiplayer is 4v4, it's Star Fox versus Star Wolf.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: You get to pick one of the characters, depending on what team you're on.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: You get to customize your little player banner, just give it a little bit of personality.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing crazy, it's just an emblem and like a player title or a banner like literally behind your name.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: So you can do online, private or local.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: And you can even do private matches up to two to eight players.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: So you can do a full-on 4v4.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: It does have online matchmaking, which is amazing.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was actually like my instant fear when they announced the game and showed off multiplayer.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: But thank God they showed like a matchmaking button in the trailer.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: It runs great.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: I've had no issues with lag or anything, really.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: The game modes are like one of the maps, one of the snow maps for Shina or something like that.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: you there's media rights falling on a planet so you don't need to dodge them and then destroy was left over to collect points.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: You can also earn points by killing AI ships so both teams have AI ships also kind of fighting.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: They're more just there for scenery.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: They're not going to like change the game, which I actually think is a good move, so it's still really focused on dog fighting with an objective, so whichever team kills each other, you get 30 points per kill, and then 100 points per objective completion, because there's like little rounds within it, our zones, I guess.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, whoever gets the most points in a certain time frame wins, and this is the same thing for the other game modes.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: There's Pirates that show up and you can destroy them and take their battery or flag and bring it back to your capital ship Same thing AI ships and then you also got the Pirates attacking you that are left over if you don't kill them all and the enemy team and then Cornelia is essentially King of the Hill Yet the hold is on the longest in a certain time period to earn points, but also you can earn points the other ways I've already described
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I believe those might be the only three multiplayer maps.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: That part is also kind of disappointing.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's hoping we get six.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: I just think the three actually felt really good in one hour of gameplay.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: There was a couple of repeats.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think six, maybe even five would have been fine.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Just to add more variety.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of beautiful levels as you'll see when you play the game.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so it would have been cool to see those in firemen's utilize for other arenas.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: Um, because one of them could have been just straight dog fights and just like full on war, um, and I think that would have been great for one of the, uh, all flying arenas or all range mode.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: So just, um, a couple of things that I think we missed a little bit here, um,
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the game's great though.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like the multiplayer is so fun when you, again, when you do the eight people, it's it's so chaotic and and fun and full of action and that's what this game's all about.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's action fun.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Beautiful.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it nails it and the music's great.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the soundtracks full like a full on orchestra.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's composed very well.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, multiplayer's great.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's just missing maps soundtracks amazing.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to talk about voice acting, character designs, the campaign itself is the same thing that you remember.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: If you're new to this, it's a great campaign where you can go through certain paths to unlock a brand new level that you probably haven't seen if you played a path already.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: And it just provides an opportunity to use the submarine, for instance, on the map Aquas, or the map Macbeth, which is it.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_00]: classic that felt better actually this time around than the 3DS and the N64 that's using the landmaster which is the tank which looks stunning in this game by the way and that's like another quick little thing as I wish there was a game mode where you can use the landmasters because I believe in the N64 you can use both either the landmaster or the arwing.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: I know on StarFox you can go pretty insane and use all three you can be on the ground, land master or arwing.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot here, there's a foundation here that I really hope that they take advantage of.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: They've put them Nintendo has put themselves into an amazing position to bring this franchise back with Fox being in Super Mario Galaxy with this game being such a good and honest remake, because you know, when we think of like remakes that have been done ready for the Switch family of consoles, you can look at Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: And don't get me wrong.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Those were faithful remakes, but they were so faithful that it was kind of annoying because like it didn't add anything like this game I mean it looks stunning for instance It's not too much of a spoiler because you literally see it within like I think a minute of the first level corn area It's literally the first level of the game.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know back in the day.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_00]: It was all bright, you know greenery the mountains the ocean look beautiful
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: But you're like, wow, this place is getting attacked and in the city little city segment of the campaign mission, it gets full on dark The buildings are on fire It looks like it's a full-on invasion with the enemies that you're fighting.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: It looks insane and Like I cannot begin to describe just how cool it is More than I already did so yeah this game
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of short and sweet because I'm still playing it, because I want to do all the paths, so I'll do like,
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a 100%er, but there is a challenge mode as well, where you can do challenges within certain levels, and then you can unlock an expert mode.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: Also, I kind of forgot how hard the game can get.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: Area 6 kind of had me going a little bit.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Venom 2 with Andros.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot how to fight him, so he's kind of tough at first, and then even Star Wolf was kind of tough at first.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then I found a good rhythm, and I was like, oh, this is easy.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: But even at first though, it's cool to be presented with such a challenge, and you're like, oh, I have to rethink what I'm doing to win.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's great.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's awesome.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the way it should be.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, there's challenge mode, which I believe is in the 3DS version of the game.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: There's the medals you can earn as far as the campaign missions go.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: If you didn't know, they're like three to maybe five minutes long.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_00]: They're really not long.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of replayability there.
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: that it's not even so much about a hundred percent and it's just fun to replay it like they've designed them to be so short that it almost pays off because you want to redo it so this game is also the perfect like pick them up have fun for a little bit and then move on with your life and I do think some games should be that way I don't think everything should be like a skyrim and a Zelda and in some of the games I talk about where you it's like oh no I'm gonna sit here for a few hours and probably do nothing.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: And then I just went through a dungeon and that was it.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I think Star Fox is a really good breath of fresh air to just kind of have that, you know, five minute experience and you still feel like you got something out of it.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: It nails that a hundred percent.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know if there was that if that was their intention back in the day because obviously there was hardware limitations.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_00]: Technology just wasn't where it is today.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: But in hindsight, it really paid off in my opinion because people have lower attention spans, and I think this game is a great, you know, a fix for a lot of people who just don't have the time or patience to commit to a $200 game.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is not a $200 game.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: This is easy.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: If you love it, like I do, a hundred percent, you can probably get it to 15 to 50 hours, you know, because I think the multiplayer is fun.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: If you play it with family and friends, you're going to have a good time, and speaking of family and friends, you can also do local co-op, where one person can fly and one person can shoot, which I think is cool, I haven't tested it yet.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's also mouse mode, but when you're in mouse mode, you're in first person, which I think kind of takes away from.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: the way that it games designed, but I think it's still a good feature that should be utilized.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: And then also, as I mentioned earlier, if you didn't catch it, there is cutscenes now.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: So back in the day, you just kind of saw General Pepper talking a fox and crew just on like a screen.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone was in a cockpit, and there's just kind of a conversation that looked like a team's call.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: But now it's full on cutscenes that look great.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: You feel like you're in a little movie.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: I think the cutscenes are
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's such a good addition to lore and just character building also gives you a sense of the world itself So that was a a really good addition in my opinion.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I know like I wanted more levels, but I do think the cutscenes above all else was still better than nothing And then God there was something I just wanted to mention and I kind of just drew a blank
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: bummer.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: Anyways, that's Star Fox for the Switch 2.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_00]: I believe I don't think I'm missing anything.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: I do hope that we get a sequel as I already said.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think the sequel's got to happen.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like there's something I'm missing.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: I just had it do.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Talked about challenge mode, talked about the campaign, replayability, co-op, cutscenes, character designs, voice acting.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I feel like I covered it all.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: There's achievements.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: This has a few achievements, I think, let me see, because I just finished the campaign.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you get a little scorecard.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's literally an invoice-sinted general pepper for $68,000 with a gotten.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: So that's cool.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you can also do the multiplayer against bots, which I think is really badass.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was such a, okay, so there is a achievements.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_00]: You unlock achievements.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: You can track your global progress across the campaign mode and playthroughs.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: So let's see a achievements, I'll press X.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: Use the achievements feature to review mission performance, check your metal progress and reveal details on how to unlock alternate routes.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that's a cool little thing that they did.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: As I'm looking at the game right now, there's a lot of stuff I haven't done.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: Ernie, a metal and all missions will unlock campaign modes, expert difficulty.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't even unlock the difficulty by just completing the first campaign, you literally have to do all of it.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: Which I think is great.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, there's some of mebo, excuse me, a mebo accessibility with Fox Falco and Wolf.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_00]: It gives you a player emblem and titles.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: They actually do look cool, so if you have them, definitely use them.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's also something called the hollow viewer and actually what I did like about this a lot is it's basically a codex for information So it says like Fox is only 18 years old which again with some of the lines and like Falco's talk because Falco's 19 years old Just the way they're talking and like yeah, that's how people talked at that age.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: I know I did for sure.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm guilty of it
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it also gives you back story on the characters, so I even have like a James McCloud file.
- 19:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so there's character files, starwolf, allies, location, enemy, intel, elites, elite enemies, and the venom incident.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty cool stuff, all of this package for 50 bucks of what I paid for.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think the game was 100% worth it.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: I do think, you know, with the awkwardity of time remake coming out, I mean, this is the best time to get a switch to with Poco Pia, Star Fox, Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong, Kirby, I mean, Fire Emblem, come on guys, I mean,
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: if you haven't got a switch to you should it's also getting a price increase i believe in august i would not wait um the xbox series x just got another price increase which is crazy shout out to my fiancee you've got it for $330 in 2024 she came in collage anyways i hope you guys enjoy this very brief super fast maybe overly energetic dis
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: review part one of Star Fox.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: I might do.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_00]: I might wait and see if they do like a post launch update.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: I could see them adding multiplayer maps.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think it'd be cool.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: I would like to see it just maybe some kind of post launch update for this game.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_00]: There's also the camera feature where you can actually, you know, have like Fox as your face.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have the switch to cameras so I couldn't test it.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe I'll test that and
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: That'll be a part of my next episode for Star Fox whenever that comes out.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I hope you guys enjoyed this.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: Please check out previous episodes if you haven't yet.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_00]: I got more on the way that I'm very excited to record.
