- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Monday, start of a
- 0:14new week and it's the 16th of December.
- 0:18Oh, getting very, very close to the end of the year.
- 0:20I hope your year is rounding out nicely and that you are not too
- 0:24madly run off your feet. But 1000 things to do.
- 0:27Although if you are, that's kind of usual kind of part for the
- 0:31course of this time of year. But no matter what's going on,
- 0:34you have taken a moment. Good on you to put your day in
- 0:39priority in order and hear a bit of God's word to punctuate
- 0:44what's going on in your life. And today we begin the last week
- 0:49in the book of Acts. We are going to finish the last
- 0:51four chapters of Acts this week. This is where Paul finds himself
- 0:56travelling all the way through to the centre of the known
- 1:00universe, all the way to Rome, Yes, away from that treasured
- 1:03city that Luke, the author loves Jerusalem and loves to write
- 1:08about what's going on there. But this is the journey away
- 1:11from Jerusalem into the centre of that space and from Rome,
- 1:15from Paul's missionary work in Rome.
- 1:18The message spreads far and wide to the corners of the earth.
- 1:23And so here we are documenting that process.
- 1:26So let's do it, shall we? Let us hear the story about how
- 1:29Paul ends up there and what he does there as we read together
- 1:32Acts chapter 25. Three days after Festus arrived
- 1:48in, say, Syria, to take over his new responsibilities, he left
- 1:52for Jerusalem, where the leading priests and other Jewish leaders
- 1:56met with him and made their accusations against Paul.
- 2:00They asked Festus as a favour to transfer Paul to Jerusalem,
- 2:05planning to ambush and kill him on the way.
- 2:08But Festus replied that Paul was in Say Saria, and he himself
- 2:13would be returning there soon. So he said, those of you in
- 2:17authority can return with me. If Paul has done anything wrong,
- 2:22you can make your accusations. About 8 or 10 days later, Festus
- 2:28returned to Say Saria, and on the following day he took his
- 2:32seat in court and ordered that Paul be brought in.
- 2:36When Paul arrived, the Jewish leaders from Jerusalem gathered
- 2:39around and made many serious accusations they couldn't prove.
- 2:45Paul denied the charges. I am not guilty of any crime
- 2:50against the Jewish laws or the Temple or the Roman government,
- 2:54he said. Then Festus, wanting to please
- 2:58the Jews, asked him, Are you willing to go to Jerusalem and
- 3:03stand trial before me there? But Paul replied, no, this is
- 3:10the official Roman court, so I ought to be tried right here.
- 3:14You know very well I'm not guilty of harming the Jews.
- 3:17If I have done anything worthy of death, I won't refuse to die.
- 3:22But if I am innocent, no one has the right to turn me over to
- 3:26these men to kill me. I appeal to Caesar.
- 3:31Festus conferred with his advisers and then replied, Very
- 3:35well, you have appealed to Caesar, and to Caesar you will
- 3:40go. A few days later, King Agrippa
- 3:44arrived with his sister Bernice to pay their respects to Festus.
- 3:49During their stay of several days, Festus discussed Paul's
- 3:53case with the king. There is a prisoner here, he
- 3:56told him, whose case was left for me by Felix when I was in
- 4:01Jerusalem. The leading priests and Jewish
- 4:04elders pressed charges against him and asked me to condemn him.
- 4:09I pointed out to them that Roman Lord does not convict people
- 4:13without a trial. They must be given an
- 4:16opportunity to confront their accusers and defend themselves.
- 4:21When his accusers came here for the trial, I didn't delay.
- 4:25I called the case the very next day and ordered Paul brought in.
- 4:30But the accusations made against him weren't any of the crimes I
- 4:35expected. Instead, there was something
- 4:38about their religion and a dead man named Jesus, who Paul
- 4:43insists is alive. I was at a loss to know how to
- 4:47investigate these things, so I asked him whether he would be
- 4:50willing to stand trial on these charges in Jerusalem.
- 4:53But Paul appealed to have his case decided by the emperor, so
- 4:58I ordered that he be held in custody until I could arrange to
- 5:01send him to Caesar. I'd like to hear the man myself,
- 5:06Agrippa said, and Festus replied.
- 5:09You will to Morrow. So the next day Agrippa and
- 5:13Bernice arrived at the auditorium with great pomp,
- 5:17accompanied by military officers and prominent men of the city.
- 5:21Festus ordered that Paul be brought in then.
- 5:24Festus said King Agrippa and all who are here, this is the man
- 5:30whose death is demanded by all the Jews both here and in
- 5:34Jerusalem. But in my opinion he has done
- 5:38nothing deserving death. However, since he appealed his
- 5:42case to the emperor, I have decided to send him to Rome.
- 5:47But what shall I write the emperor for?
- 5:50There is no clear charge against him, so I have brought him
- 5:54before all of you, and especially you, King Agrippa, so
- 5:59that after we examine him, I might have something to write
- 6:03for. It makes no sense to send a
- 6:05prisoner to the Emperor without specifying the charges against
- 6:09him. Ah, Lord, sometimes the
- 6:21machinations of bureaucracy are enough to drive us mad.
- 6:26Things take so long, and things take twists and turns and
- 6:30directions that we don't anticipate.
- 6:32And not just in bureaucracy, but in life in general.
- 6:36But Lord, you have a bigger plan.
- 6:39Your understanding and knowledge and creativity and the canvas
- 6:44upon which you paint the story of our lives is so much bigger
- 6:48than anything we can imagine. So, Lord, I pray for your peace
- 6:54and I pray that we would rest in you and trust, trust in your
- 7:01ways and trust that in the fullness of time and in the
- 7:05breath of your creative plans that your will will be done.
- 7:10I mean, it looks like the enemy is winning and that your Kingdom
- 7:14is suffering. Lord, that we would rest in you
- 7:18in the knowledge that you rule supreme over heaven, but also
- 7:23over earth. Thank you for your love, thank
- 7:30you for your goodness, and that you shower both of them on us.
- 7:35We are humbled and delighted by you, and it's in your name that
- 7:39we pray all these things. Jesus, Amen.
