- 0:00Hey, everybody, it's Jeff. We wanted to let you know we recorded

- 0:54I don't know if excited is actually the word, but I'm intrigued by
- 0:58where this Philadelphia team is gonna possibly go. Here in week seventeen after a
- 1:03win against the New York Giants, and it has been nothing but negativity with
- 1:08regard to this team. It's absolutely astonishing what we are hearing from various reports
- 1:14here and there. But this week here at the PST podcast show, on
- 1:19this particular preview show, we've got a great guest. We're gonna get into
- 1:23this Cardinals Eagles matchup and what we may see from this Cardinals team. We
- 1:27got a great guest. Let's get to it, and it is great to
- 1:30have back on the show to get into this Eagles Cardinals preview, and he's
- 1:37for NFL player love having former players on. They're able to talk candidly and

- 2:45we're doing our day, man, All right, very good. Well,
- 2:47hey, let's get into this Cardinals Eagles preview show here. And it's such
- 2:53an interesting time to be a Philadelphia Eagles sports fan here a Philadelphi Eagles fan,
- 2:58I should say, interesting time for Cardinals nation as well as this team
- 3:02has really not had that great of a season. I mean, it's been
- 3:07it's been a tough year for the Cardinals on both sides of the ball,
- 3:09and I think ed heading into this season, there seemed to be some hope
- 3:14for more than three wins at this point, you know, as we're heading
- 3:16into week seventeen. I remember hearing about the offensive line, just hearing about
- 3:22some of the skill position players, which we're going to get to in a
- 3:23bit. But I'm wondering, as you're reflecting on this season, what's one
- 3:28word to describe this Cardinal season here? And why would you choose that one
- 3:31word? My word is expected? Oh okay, getting exactly what we expected,
- 3:38at least from my point of view. And you know, the you
- 3:39know, the faithful fans, you know they come to every season, fans
- 3:44come in thinking, hey, there's you never know what could happen. Look
- 3:46at so many other organizations around, you know, the National Football League,
- 3:51everybody thought Houston was going to be a dumpster fire. Here we are fighting
- 3:53for a playoff spot. You know, in the initial part of the season,
- 3:57you know, we knew we were coming in without Kyler Murray. Uh
- 4:00you know, when he was coming back, we didn't know, but there
- 4:02was hope. You start off the season with Josh Dobbs playing halfway decent,
- 4:06but he was playing with a roster Jeff that was totally just stripped of all
- 4:12talent, you know, not talking all the way back into last off season.
- 4:15What they did, you know, new general managers, new coach taking
- 4:17over for Kime and Kingsbury. They stripped this thing down to the bone.
- 4:21Didn't replay this free agency yseas and they didn't go out and spend a lot
- 4:25of money. So they went through the draft, tried to put you know,
- 4:29fill a couple holes that type of thing, but there was no in
- 4:32my opinion. There was no expectation that this was going to be a team
- 4:36that was going to win a bunch of games. Now what they you know,
- 4:41for me, you know, with Kyler, you know, waiting for
- 4:44him to come back. He eventually did, and and people were still holding
- 4:47out like, well, we get we're getting Kyler back. And I was
- 4:49like, wait a minute, We're getting Kyler back, but he's doing this
- 4:53roster. We didn't realize he's not bringing a bunch of his friends with him,
- 4:57you know, So you know, it just it is what it is,
- 5:00you know. We you know, it's been some good, but it's
- 5:03been a lot of bad, especially if you look at the record three and
- 5:06twelve right now, and there's not much you can say other than for me,
- 5:11this is exactly what I expected. Man. And you follow the Cardinals
- 5:15more than I do, my friend. You you follow this team inside and
- 5:18out, and for me, I guess to go back. What I initially
- 5:21was saying was that I think because the offensive line I think was going to
- 5:27be at least I saw it as going to be somewhat solid. And for
- 5:30me, you know, and you've been an NFL player, if you have
- 5:32a solid offensive line, that's really gonna help set the stage for so much
- 5:36from an offensive perspective. And you know, I thought having that offensive line
- 5:41and a solid offensive line was really going to pay dividends, and it really
- 5:45it really didn't at all. So maybe my theory is going to be wrong.
- 5:48Well, you know what they did, Jeff, and what awesome for
- 5:53it and Gannon are trying to do. They're paying for the sins of the
- 5:56prior regime. Yeah, time and Kingsbury to them offensive line. I mean,
- 6:01how many times did we draft guys in the fourth, fifth, sixth
- 6:04round? Yeah, and just totally you know, not even pay attention to
- 6:09that part of the you know, the foundation and and and you know you're
- 6:14getting guys in the fourth, phy six rounds. It's like, okay,
- 6:16what do you expect going down? Getting second tier free aging guys, And
- 6:20there was no attention to detail in that portion of you know. But what
- 6:25I like is Austin Ford again and one of the first things they did and
- 6:29when I'm drafted Pasis in the first round, and that was the beginning I
- 6:31think of trying to solidify that. But it's gonna take a whole lot more
- 6:35than him, you know. But yeah, I mean that's basically where they're
- 6:40starting from scratch, but they're they're at least paying attention to that offensive line
- 6:45to start out here with Austin fort Gannon. Yeah, it's really interesting.
- 6:48You mentioned Jonathan Gannon and I want to get into him next coming from Philadelphia
- 6:54to Arizona, and you know, there were a lot of folks here in
- 6:58Philadelphia that wanted to run him out of town even though they got to the
- 7:00super Bowl last year. But you know, you know a lot of fans
- 7:04thinking, you know, they understand coaching, of of course, and hey,
- 7:10believe me, there were times when I was not the biggest Jonathan Gannon
- 7:13fan in the world, talking about on this podcast a number of times.
- 7:16But I'm wondering, as he's moved over to Arizona in his first season thus
- 7:20far, what has he brought to the team in terms of positive attributes and
- 7:27what does he need to improve on as well, you know, as they
- 7:30kind of look, they're looking already towards this offseason and next year, so
- 7:34we can kind of get into the positives and what he needs to improve on.
- 7:38What are your thoughts, ed, Well, great question. I mean,
- 7:41obviously the record doesn't reflect what the job that I think he's doing starting
- 7:46in the offseason, Jeff, he's you know, he started bringing caountability and
- 7:50kind of trying to improve the culture from where it was. You know,
- 7:55Kingsbury, no disrespect to him, but he led kind of a loose ship
- 7:59and you know even with Kyle of his way, he handled Kyler Murray and
- 8:01different things that was all out there. And what what Gainnon has done starting
- 8:07from training camp. You know, accountability for you know, being on time
- 8:11for meetings. No, you know, if you're gonna eat, make sure
- 8:13you do that before you get into meetings. You know, different things like
- 8:16that, hustling on the field, those little small things that lead to the
- 8:20big things. And you know, my opinion, you know the next thing
- 8:24that he's done because obviously, once again you look at the record, it
- 8:26doesn't look good, but these guys are out there playing hard for him,
- 8:31and that's half the battle. I mean, when you're looking at this record,
- 8:33you could think and I go back to twenty eighteen when we had Wilkes
- 8:37as our head coach here Man, and it was it was a totally different
- 8:41vibe because you could tell, like in second half of games and even just
- 8:48coming out in games. It was like a lack of days ago. It
- 8:52was like guys were not hustling and they you could I'm not gonna use the
- 8:54Q word, but it looked like dudes are out there quitting a little bit
- 8:58from time to time and not giving their full effort. The one thing I
- 9:01like about Ganning so far is regardless of what the score is, and we
- 9:05all know they're being they're going out there a lot of times and coaches know,
- 9:09hey, we're out talented out there right now. You go out there
- 9:11and you play against Sam Fran with this roster and you know, you give
- 9:15all the pep talk you want, but you know we don't. We're going
- 9:18out there with pop guns and they got guns. We're really ammunition. And
- 9:22so but the thing I like that he's led these guys and they have not
- 9:26given up on him, even at three and twelve, fighting hard, and
- 9:30you know, no dissension in the ranks either, not a lot of chatter
- 9:33coming out of the locker room and stuff like that. So that's the good.
- 9:37On the flip side, I'd like to see him improve one he again
- 9:41and have to improve this roster. That's first and foremost. The Townspecia exactly.
- 9:48You're not gonna win without town, So that's the first thing they have
- 9:50to do. The other thing for getting I'd love for him to get out
- 9:54of this conservative mode a little bit. And when I say that, it's
- 9:56like, you know, when you're going in with less talents time, you
- 10:00gotta sometimes dig deep into that bag and maybe have a little more trickery or
- 10:05hey, we got to We're not gonna have twenty play drives maybe every now
- 10:09and then, we got to just heave it down the field. This offense
- 10:13with Petsing so far has been so dink and dunk, and you know,
- 10:18we'll talk about the skill positions and stuff like that players in a minute here,
- 10:22but everything has been so conservative, you know, And when you first
- 10:26get a job, you don't want to look like a fool by going out
- 10:28there and doing all the crazy stuff like Staley did over in you know,
- 10:33La with the with the Chargers. But I just think he's gonna have to
- 10:37get a little more aggressive in his play call and kind of pursuit of trying
- 10:43to get this team to the next level, because you're not gonna do it,
- 10:46like I said, the way we've done it so far offensively. Yeah,
- 10:50you mentioned the skill players, and I really wanted to get your assessments
- 10:54on what we have seen from them, specifically running back and wide receiver as
- 10:58well, because James Connor he's near the bottom statistically as it pertains to you
- 11:03know, starting running backs in the NFL. Trey McBride is the leading receiver
- 11:09on the team with seven hundred and forty three yards only two touchdowns. Marquis
- 11:13Brown He's got four touchdowns. So I'm wondering, you know, why haven't
- 11:18the skill players really been able to kind of get over that hump this season
- 11:22in terms of their productivity. I mean, is it their skill level ed
- 11:26or you know, is it the offensive scheme accombination of both. I don't
- 11:28know, you've been watching these games. What are your thoughts? First and
- 11:33foremost that we talked about a few minutes ago with the offensive line, we're
- 11:37still building that if you don't have that push up front or the protection,
- 11:41everything kind of falls to the side from there, you know. And James
- 11:45Connor good running back, not great. Don't love the scheme, especially when
- 11:50Murray's in there, because we do a lot of stuff from the pistol.
- 11:52Jeff yep and in my opinion. Connor is a guy you got to get
- 11:56going downhill from the start, quarterback under center, you know, going run
- 12:00in power run, whatever it is getting him going seven yards deep coming downfield.
- 12:05I don't like this scheme with all the Reid option. You know,
- 12:09it's kind of are you getting the ball you're not, you know, that
- 12:11type of thing. That's not Connor's thing. As far as the you know,
- 12:15the Trey McBride, the injury to Ertz was probably the best thing to
- 12:18happen to this offensive trade. McBride. You hate to see another player go
- 12:22down, but obviously Ertz was taking snaps away from Trey, and you know,
- 12:28Erth has had his time. This is Trey has taken full you know,
- 12:33advantage of you know, Earth's going down. He's become the number one
- 12:37option as far as even before Murray came back, and it's great. I
- 12:41think he'll get with his maturity moving forward. He's a piece you no longer
- 12:46have to worry about in the offense. On the outside, Jeff, we've
- 12:50got absolutely nothing out there. And if you think about Marquis, Marquise was
- 12:54brought in here as a supplement when Hopkins went went it was suspended a couple
- 13:01of years ago with you know, we got that PD suspension. We all
- 13:03didn't know at the time. They get around the first round pick to bring
- 13:07Marques in here, and you think about it, Mark Piece is not a
- 13:09number one receive a one. He's small, he doesn't have a great catch
- 13:15you know, a catch radius as they call it. He's more of a
- 13:16dude. When you have the number one in there, he's over the top
- 13:20threat. But if you're talking about covering him and that's all you have to
- 13:24do, I mean, that makes it easy for defense. And along with
- 13:26our other you know, wide receivers, we just don't have the experience in
- 13:31the talent. You run through, you run through our roster and you're like,
- 13:33who are these got? You literally have to go to the program to
- 13:37find out who our wide receiver group is. And that's not scaring defenses.
- 13:41The scheme, along with the lack of talent, has just been a total
- 13:46you know bomb here so far. But you know, as I mentioned,
- 13:50they're building it. So that's another position, another group that they're really going
- 13:54to have to pay attention to through free agencies, through draft. You never
- 13:58know might be looking at that way up there in the draft you know,
- 14:03do you go out and spend that first pick on that talent there? But
- 14:07yeah, we just don't have the talent and the scheme was not built,
- 14:09you know, for the long haul as well. We'll see what happens with
- 14:15this Cardinals wide outs this coming week, and I'll tell you that because the
- 14:18Eagles secondary stinks and we're gonna end up seeing what is going to happen there
- 14:24because the Giants wide receiver corps there were certain elements at certain points during the
- 14:28game where they had a decent game. So we're gonna wait and see what
- 14:31happens there. But as we're moving along here, we wanted to get into
- 14:35Cardinals defense. I mean, they've allowed the sixth most total yards of any
- 14:39team in the NFL, and frankly, the Eagles really aren't that much better.
- 14:43This Eagles defense a complete one to eighty from where they were last year,
- 14:48so very dominant and now this year. Of course, yes there have
- 14:50been injuries, but aside from that, just not a lot of cohesive play
- 14:54from the Eagles defense. I think we're seeing that also with this Cardinals defense
- 14:58too. So when you were fleed on this season, ed, is is
- 15:03is it the defensive tackle position two, which it's a position that some say
- 15:07has been neglected for quite some time, or is it another defensive position that
- 15:11really seems to be the Achilles heel for this Cardinals defense? Like, what
- 15:16are you thinking and what have you seen throughout the season? Once again,
- 15:20Jeff, it's everything and we don't have the guys up front. You know,
- 15:24I think about this, Jeff. It wasn't too long ago we had
- 15:26Channel Jones, JJ Watt, Byron Murphy, Zack Call. He could run
- 15:33through names that we had here and now are you literally once again you was
- 15:37like who you know? Like whould they say you had to go to the
- 15:39program or go to google the pool guys up And he's like, we just
- 15:43don't have the off the defensive guys. You know, we all have to
- 15:46Xavan Collins, but you know he's kind of a hybrid guy. We let
- 15:50Isaiah Simmons go because he wasn't a fit here, so you know, there
- 15:54once again, it's like they're trying to figure it out on the fly.
- 15:58We know that this was the defense, regardless of who was calling the plays,
- 16:03was gonna be at a disadvance because we don't have the guys up front.
- 16:07We also don't have the guys in the back to help you guys up
- 16:10front. So it's just a total like you can pick. It's almost like
- 16:14pick your poison. When you're trying to tack this Cardinals defense. You want
- 16:18to run on them, yes, you want to throw on them, yes.
- 16:21And when we you know, we decided to throw pressure at you,
- 16:23then we're exposing the back end and we don't throw pressure at you, We're
- 16:26just letting the quarterback sit back there and pick you know, eeny meenie miney
- 16:30mo. So it's it's just one of those things where once again they stripped
- 16:33the roster down those names that we had, you know, through retirement and
- 16:38through not re signing guys, we were just really uh just not don't have
- 16:45enough upfront to really cause anybody any Yanks, uh. And we've seen that
- 16:48throughout the season. I mean, when we had some leads and stuff like
- 16:52that, we didn't have enough to hold other teams off, or we just
- 16:56got beat right from the start and we find ourselves in a hole. So
- 17:00it's just been it's been a really bad season out here all the way around
- 17:03so far. I think this upcoming game with the Eagles here ed it could
- 17:07be sixty three to sixty at the end of the game. Yeah, this
- 17:11could be a get right game for both you know, for both offenses.
- 17:17On the flip side, you know, you guys could beat us like an
- 17:19old real gang out in the backyard. We just don't know. Well again,
- 17:25folks, we're talking to Ed Smith and Ed Smith speaks on Twitter,
- 17:29part of the Believe Podcast Network. Absolutely love talking to him, and as
- 17:33we do on every Opposition Territory podcast every week this season, we like to
- 17:37get into some matchups. So we also like to get into what each team
- 17:41is going to need to hit on for a win. So let's start with
- 17:45some matchups here going into week seventeen. Here, Ed, So, when
- 17:51you're looking at this matchup Cards against the Eagles here, where do you think
- 17:53the Cardinals are most vulnerable from an offensive perspective? And we may have a
- 17:59few we've probably already talked about it, but yeah, where the Cardinal's most
- 18:03vulnerable on offense? Well, you know with Kyler, he's coming back from
- 18:07that knee, Jeff, and you know the ACL like people look at the
- 18:11calendar like, wow, he's back. He's not going to be fully back
- 18:15until the full off season. After he makes hopefully makes it through the last
- 18:19couple of games here healthy, you get him into a full off season where
- 18:22he can continue to strengthen the knee, and then the other thing is get
- 18:26confidence in that knee as well. It's not just the physical sometimes it's the
- 18:30mental because he does not currently look like hisself out there. Meaning normally he
- 18:34is so dynamic and he's you know, he's had a scrambler or two here
- 18:40in games, but there are games where he just takes over with his legs.
- 18:42When he's fully healthy, he's just not right there right now. And
- 18:45when he's not healthy, when he's just sitting in the pocket, he becomes
- 18:49an average quarterback. And because of his size, teams have the ability if
- 18:56you can keep him in the pocket, keep him from scrambling, he becomes
- 18:59even of an average quarterback if you ask me, because that's not his games.
- 19:03Game is getting it out on the edges. You never know, you
- 19:06can, you know, extend, you know your drives. He can pop
- 19:11one out and nextly you know he's sixty yards down the field or scoring or
- 19:14doing something crazy like he did against Ball. Oh, it was the the
- 19:17Raiders last year with like an eighteen second scramble for a touchdown or whatever it
- 19:22was. But because he's just not he's not there right now with that knee,
- 19:26he becomes less dynamic the offensive line and our running game is even more
- 19:32predictable and easy to kind of control. And then because we don't have the
- 19:37weapons on the outside, and you know, the I guess, the hesitation
- 19:42to throw the ball down the field, all those make us just a tough
- 19:48watch sometime and very easy to defense. So our offense is not doing anything
- 19:53what you would call great right now, and I don't expect it to like
- 19:59explode in the next two games. I'm expecting to see a lot more of
- 20:03what we've seen since Kyler came back, which is, you know, it's
- 20:06not gonna be right until next year, until he gets better, until they
- 20:11getting more weapons to operate with as well. I think it's a fair assessment
- 20:14for sure. On the flip side of things here, ed, where do
- 20:17you think the Cardinals are most vulnerable on the defensive side of the ball?
- 20:22Man? But we're looking at this matchup, Yeah, we're looking at this
- 20:26matchup with the Eagles. We're vulnerable if if you guys run, like I
- 20:30said, it's almost like, you know, pick your poison. What do
- 20:33you guys want to do to us? If you want to run against us,
- 20:37which I would advise, because that opens up everything up. You know,
- 20:41if you can run and we can't stop you, then we got to
- 20:45start sending booted down to the box and that opens everything up over the top.
- 20:49With your weapons with Smith and aj, you guys have so much you
- 20:53can do. I just would say, don't get antsy, you know,
- 20:57start the game, the ball, see where your advantages are, and then
- 21:03start picking us apart with you know, because like I said, we don't
- 21:06have the guys up front to stop you. We don't have the guys in
- 21:08the secondary to cover you, which is a bad recipe if you're playing NFL
- 21:12football. So you know, the Eagles do what they're supposed to do.
- 21:17Like I said, this could be a get right game in terms of feeling
- 21:21much better about yourselves because we came with the right game plan and used our
- 21:26heads and you know, like I said, just patience. There's not gonna
- 21:29be a whole lot of in my opinion, angst coming from the other side
- 21:33of the ball this Sunday, all right, Well, to close us out
- 21:37here talking about what both teams are going to need to hit on for a
- 21:41win. What's the one thing and the Cardinals will need to hit on this
- 21:45week for a win? What's that one thing? Man? I'm telling you
- 21:49a little bit, a little bit of luck, you know, control us,
- 21:52control the ball as much as we can, try to keep the ball
- 21:56away from the egles. Jeff, that would be our best formula. Why
- 22:00don't you mentioned earlier it could be a sixty to sixty three game. I
- 22:04don't think we haven't scored. I don't think we can score sixty three if
- 22:08you gave us eight quarters to do it in this game, this particular game.
- 22:12But the thing is just keep you know, for the Cardinals, keep
- 22:15the ball away from the eagles, or as much as possible, extend the
- 22:19drives when you can, and then take some shots up the field because as
- 22:23I mentioned, if you're trying to drive the ball, you know, fifteen
- 22:26yard drives, that's not going to work. I think every now and then
- 22:30you just got to get back there. Have something designed to at least make
- 22:33the ego secondary think we might go past them. But you know, to
- 22:37this point it just just hasn't materialized. And you know, after you got
- 22:41to protect Kyler. You know, like I said, he's not he's not
- 22:44he's not his normal superman's self right now. He's wearing the glasses and the
- 22:48suit and tie with Clark Kent right now. So you're going to protect that
- 22:52man and you know, keep him out of harm's way. And you know,
- 22:55if you got that running game going, I suggest they bring it.
- 22:57But I said, ball control, keep it away from the Eagles. No
- 23:00turnovers obviously, and you know I said, just try to pull the rabbit
- 23:03out that at that hat if you can something to you know, trick player
- 23:08here or too nothing. You know, I always talking to my radio partner,
- 23:12scare money, don't make money because we talk about going to the casino
- 23:15all the time. Scare money, don't make money. Man, you're scared
- 23:18to you know, just go out there and let let it go. You
- 23:22know, maybe, like I said, maybe we'll shock you guys, shot
- 23:23the Egles somehow. But just you know, I sually I'm expecting more of
- 23:27what we've seen over these last few weeks after one last thing out there too.
- 23:32Joe, Oh, all right, Eagle, the Cardinals, they would
- 23:36love to get a victory, but they would actually love more to play hard,
- 23:42look good, lose one by one or two, and stay in that
- 23:47number two drafting spot right now. You know that's in the back of some
- 23:49heads. Absolutely, we'd love to look great, maybe almost shocked, you
- 23:55know, and the Eagles kick a last second field goal, we go home
- 23:57feeling good, and we stay in that number two spot. As far as
- 24:00that draft, I think that's really interesting. That's an interesting angle for sure.
- 24:04Well, to close this out here, what's the one thing the Eagles
- 24:07are gonna need to hit on for a win this week against the Cardinals?
- 24:11Ed, Hey, man, just don't get cute. Just go out here.
- 24:15This is one of those just go do what you do. Run the
- 24:18ball, don't give fancy. Don't think Jalen's got to drop back and throw
- 24:23it forty five fifty times. This should be one of those games. Forty
- 24:27five runs, fifteen to twenty passes. You know, we got our workmen
- 24:32gloves on this week. We know we got a team that's much less talented
- 24:36than us. To make sure we hit on our p's and q's, get
- 24:40after them on the defensive side of the ball. Don't give them. Here's
- 24:42the thing. If you can take a hope away early, then make this
- 24:47one of those ones where it was never in doubt. That's good here,
- 24:49and if the Eagles are fighting for this one at the very end, that's
- 24:53not a good sign. So you know, like I said, just come
- 24:56out, don't be cute, to do what you gotta do and know what
- 24:59you against on the other side of the ball. Get after it. You
- 25:02should come away with a victory. He's Ed Smith, Folks, part of

- 26:06Of course I was kidding about the sixty three to sixty score. But look,
- 26:10I mean, both of these teams defense, they're just not performing at
- 26:14a high level. And I know the Eagles, you know Shaq Leonard this
- 26:18past week had had an impact on the game after he was signed by this
- 26:22Eagles front office. And the secondary still floundering. There's not that much of
- 26:27a pass rush. I mean, there was only one sack against the New
- 26:30York Giants, six quarterback hits. It hasn't been the greatest past few weeks,
- 26:37of course, in terms of this pass rush. So let's see what
- 26:40happens. Let's see what happens here with this Cardinals team. Is Kyler Murray
- 26:45gonna be able to use those legs like Ed was saying, you know him
- 26:47coming back from the injury hasn't necessarily been the Kyler Murray that we've been used
- 26:52to seeing, you know, a few scrambles here and there, but you
- 26:56know, we'll see what this pass rush does. I think that's going to
- 26:57be an intriguing and to the radar aspect of this particular game coming up.
- 27:02So again, thanks so much to Ed for coming on. It's so great
- 27:04to talk to him. A plethora of knowledge when it comes to the game
- 27:08of football, specifically the Arizona Cardinals. So it's gonna do it for us
