- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Monday, it's the 5th of August, and today we get to open
- 0:18up a new book of the Bible, blow the dust off, crack it open to
- 0:241st Corinthians. Yeah, we are going to read
- 0:27through 1st and 2nd Corinthians now starting of course with
- 0:31First Corinthians. First Corinthians written by our
- 0:33mate Paul to this church that he planted in the city of Corinth.
- 0:39Corinth was a new city, planned and kind of revitalised and
- 0:43rebuilt by Julius Caesar. And it was full of activity
- 0:48right on the port where so much trade was going on.
- 0:52And lots of the people that they sent to set up this this new
- 0:56Roman settlement, we're freed slaves from all around the Roman
- 1:01Empire. So we've got people who've come
- 1:03here without old money. There's a lot of
- 1:05entrepreneurship, a lot of cutthroat self interest,
- 1:11developing their own little part of the Kingdom.
- 1:15And unfortunately, when this little collection of house
- 1:18churches started to develop and grow after Paul left, that
- 1:23approach of Corinth started to shape the way that they did
- 1:27this. And so there was a lot of
- 1:29inviting and a lot of flaunting of possession and status.
- 1:35And Paul wants to make sure that he draws them away from the
- 1:39status quo, which is kind of deeply embedded in the Greco
- 1:44Roman gods and religion of the time, and that real promotion
- 1:48and beginning of capitalism as that started to grow and say as
- 1:54God's family, we do it differently.
- 1:57And so it calls them back to the way that it it ought to be under
- 2:03the rule of Jesus. And this is such a great letter
- 2:06because it addresses all these things that were going wrong
- 2:09that yes, friends still go wrong in our communities today.
- 2:13And so, so much of what Paul has to write to his old friends in
- 2:17Corinth still echoes very loudly and a pick up applicably into
- 2:23our modern world. So friends, let's gather around
- 2:26our friend Paul and hear what he has to say as we read together
- 2:30First Corinthians chapter one. This letter is from Paul, chosen
- 2:43by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus.
- 2:47And from our brother Sosthenes. I'm writing to God's church in
- 2:51Corinth to you who have been called by God to be His own holy
- 2:56people. He made you holy by means of
- 2:59Christ Jesus, just as He did for all people everywhere who call
- 3:03on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.
- 3:09May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and
- 3:13peace. I always thank my God for you
- 3:17and for the gracious gifts He has given you now that you
- 3:21belong to Christ Jesus. Through Him, God has enriched
- 3:25your church in every way with all of your eloquent words and
- 3:29all of your knowledge. This confirms that what I told
- 3:33you about Christ is true. Now that you have every
- 3:36spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of
- 3:40our Lord Jesus Christ, He will keep you strong to the end so
- 3:45that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord
- 3:48Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for He is
- 3:53faithful to do what he says, and He has invited you into
- 3:57partnership with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 4:01I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of
- 4:05our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other.
- 4:11Let there be no divisions in the Church.
- 4:13Rather be of one mind united in thought and purpose.
- 4:19For some members of Chloe's household have told me about
- 4:22your quarrels. My dear brothers and sisters,
- 4:26some of you are saying I am a follower of Paul.
- 4:29Others are saying I follow Apollos, or I follow Peter, or I
- 4:35follow only Christ. Has Christ been divided into
- 4:39factions? Was I, Paul crucified for you?
- 4:44Were any of you baptised in the name of Paul?
- 4:48Of course not. I thank God that I did not
- 4:51baptise any of you except Crispus and Gaius, for no one
- 4:56can say that they were baptised in my name.
- 4:59Oh yes, I also baptised the household of Stefanus, but I
- 5:03don't remember baptising anyone else.
- 5:05For Christ didn't send me to baptise, but to preach the good
- 5:09news, and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross
- 5:13of Christ would lose its power. The message of the cross is
- 5:18foolish to those who are headed for destruction, but we who are
- 5:23being saved know it is the very power of God.
- 5:28As the Scriptures say, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
- 5:32and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.
- 5:36So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and
- 5:39the world's brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this
- 5:43world look foolish since God and his wisdom saw to it that the
- 5:49world would never know Him through human wisdom.
- 5:52He has used our foolish preaching to save those who
- 5:56believe. It is foolish to the Jews who
- 5:59ask for signs from heaven, and it is foolish to the Greeks who
- 6:03seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ
- 6:07was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say
- 6:12it's all nonsense. But to those called by God to
- 6:15salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of
- 6:21God and the wisdom of God. This foolish plan of God is
- 6:26wiser than the wisest of human plans and God's weakness.
- 6:31He's stronger than the greatest of human strength.
- 6:34Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were
- 6:39wise in the world's eyes, or powerful or wealthy when God
- 6:43called you. Instead, God chose things the
- 6:46world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they
- 6:50are wise, and He chose things that are powerless to shame
- 6:55those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the
- 6:59world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring
- 7:05to nothing what the world considers important.
- 7:09As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.
- 7:15God has united you with Christ Jesus for our benefit.
- 7:20God made him to be wisdom itself.
- 7:24Christ made us right with God, He made us pure and holy, and He
- 7:30freed us from sin. Therefore, as the Scriptures
- 7:34say, if you want to boast, boast only about the Lord
- 7:50Jesus. It is so tempting for us to
- 7:53think that we need to be wise and eloquent and impressive.
- 8:00Thank you for Paul, who writes so clearly that it's not about
- 8:03us. It is about Your spirit at work
- 8:07in your people and we are just needing to be faithful to what
- 8:13you call us to do. Thank you Lord, that it is Your
- 8:17glory, your magnificence and Your truth that will always be
- 8:23what's impressive. So continue to humble us,
- 8:28continue to give us servant hearts so that we would always
- 8:33point to You and never let our egos get out of Czech, Lord, as
- 8:39we start to think how clever we are.
- 8:41No, no, it is you, you who makes the intelligence of the world
- 8:46unintelligent, and instead use what the world would consider
- 8:51foolish to be your wisdom. So Lord, make us humble, help us
- 8:57get in line so that we can point to you for all the glory to land
- 9:03on your throne, our glorious, glorious Saviour.
- 9:06In his name we pray. Amen.
