- 0:11SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad that you have tuned in for North Bible recap.
- 0:15SPEAKER_01: And I'm glad to have my friend Pastor Christian with me.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Glad to be here.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Excited.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: If you are new, we would like for you to do the reading first, and then all of this is gonna make sense.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: What we try to do here is to uh just touch on some of the things that we're reading in both reading one and reading two.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So if you're new, do us a huge favor, like, subscribe if you're watching on YouTube, if you're on Facebook, make sure you share this.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: If you're on Spotify, leave us a review.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I want to make a comment in regards to what we bring to the table each week.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we're not theologians, okay, per se.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Now, some of us have some education.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Um, Christian, you have tell us a little bit your education.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: So I have a double major in biblical literacy and pastoral ministry.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And a master's on a master's on global organ organizational leadership.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: And so we have, you know, we'll have different speakers on, which um, I mean, people sit in these chairs that we have degrees.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Uh some of us do.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: I actually have a degree in biochemistry, but I have given a lot of education in regards to global university through um uh studying the Bible, but also bring to the table literally 40 years of studying the word of God.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And those 40 years have been very intently daily reading God's word, giving myself to God's word, uh, a desire for God's word.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: But here's what I know everybody we bring to this podcast has a deep hunger and desire for God's word that has been fleshed out for many, many years.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: And so I think that that is the number one thing that is important uh when we are talking about looking into God's word.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Um, because when you have that desire, you will turn to podcasts like North Bible Recap.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: You will go to other sources and you will look up.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Uh in today's world also, I don't know if it is as important to have the degrees behind your name as it is to have a thirst.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Because if you have a thirst, you can find uh the material and you can find get the information that you want to get.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: It's very important.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: I think that the hunger for the word of God is the most important thing that we should have as believers.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: And if you don't have a hunger for the word of God, pray that God give you a hunger for his word to read every day.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: We don't want you just to read a few times a week or a few times a year.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: We want this to be the habit every single day.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: This is why, in part of our reading one plan, it's only one chapter per day, because we wanted to make it easy and accessible for you to spend some good quality time, even if it's five minutes a day or less, in the word of God.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And so today we're gonna dive into it.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: We've we've got um Luke chapter five.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: We went through one through four the previous week, five through ten.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Yep, and then Isaiah chapters 21 through 36.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, again, we're covering a lot of ground.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Yes, and we're taking some highlights, we're taking some key things that maybe you know kind of spoke to you, yeah, or things that you felt like need to be talked about.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Then also Psalms, uh, chapters 101 and 102, and then Proverbs chapter 18.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: So let's dive into it, Pastor Christian.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so Luke, um, so this is something that probably was covered last week.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: If you haven't watched last week, go last week, so you can hear a little bit more of the background of the gospel of Luke.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: But Luke and Acts is what's supposed to be one book, two different volumes.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Now, one thing that it's very important for us to understand when we're reading the gospels is each of the authors have a different audience.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's it's not that they all are just telling a story from a different angle, which they are, but really the angle is the audience.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: So Luke is it's it's a gentile, the only gentile in the whole Bible that is writing to Theophilus, uh, most likely like a Roman military commander.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: We we're not quite sure what what he was, but we know that he was wealthy because he paid for the gospel, which just it's a great, great lesson in the very beginning of the gospel of Luke.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Often we think that the gospel is free, that the gospel is free, the message of salvation, but one of the things that we learn is that a man paid so somebody could write down the the the words of Jesus, which is why as a church we are partners with illuminations, because we want to translate the Bible to every single person.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Something that's very important in there.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: So uh Luke, uh his message is for the outsiders.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: You're gonna see in the gospel of Luke that Luke is in many different ways that people that the Jews will consider outsiders, he will bring them into the story, and he's he is showing how Jesus is intentional about for you guys, they are outsiders, but for the kingdom of God, they are now part of the insiders.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So we are all play a part of the kingdom of God.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: So, so and the whole message the messiah is not only uh for you, and this is literally listed talking to you, but it's for old people, and we have that calling from God to share the gospel with everyone.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: So, one of the things in the gospel uh Luke chapter five, uh, it's what the that really speaks to me often.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It's when Jesus calls Levi.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Levi is Matthew, Matthew, his profession was a tax collector, a tax collector.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not a good one.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not uh even in today's even in today's uh culture, we don't like tax collect.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, but but it but it's completely different.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, we don't hopefully have this um just vengeance or anger against these type of individuals, but in that culture, absolutely, and he was a Jew who was a tax collector.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Now, being a tax collector that that meant that you work for the Roman government, so you were literally working for the enemy to tax your own people.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: So you can imagine the tension that people will feel when Levi or Matthew is around.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: And what does Jesus do?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: He goes to the booth and calls him to follow him.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Now, something that we need to understand is chapter four, Jesus says that he has um that he has come to preach the gospel.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: It says, and Jesus said, The spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim the good news to the poor.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Now, often we think that this means just for poor people, like financially uh poor, but really those poor people that Jesus is really talking to through Luke, it's the people who are in the outside of the community, and Jesus saying, I've come to to preach the gospel to the poor, yeah, financially, but also to the poor since spirit, to the poor people who have no relation who they don't believe, don't belong.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So then Jesus goes in chapter 5 and calls out Levi, somebody who also was poor, not financially, but he was poor in um in his uh he didn't have community, he was especially poor because no one from the Jews will want to be in any type of relationship uh with him.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: He was probably also rejected even by his own family, yeah.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Uh to be able to make that choice, uh, he was to say literally to isolate himself from all of his known people.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And now what were the the and the Romans they're only using him, they're not he's not found a real community there either.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: He's not part of them either.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, no, he's being used by them.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so in other words, Levi Matthew, it's betraying his own people.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Now, what Jesus goes and calls him and says, Come follow me.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus wants one of um Jesus wants to include everyone in the story.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: So now this is also a message for the Jews of like, yeah, we're gonna include even the ones that you hate that are part of your circle.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So Jesus is making a big statement when he's bringing Matthew to follow him.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Then in chapter six, uh, the one of the parts that I really like is uh when Jesus calls it 12 disciples.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Now there are 12 disciples.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: If you ask me to name all of them, I will not be able to name all I used to know them, I can't remember all of them, all of them by name.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: But in chapter six, uh verse 12 through 16, you find all of the names.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Now, the one that I want to mention is uh in chapter 15, it says, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the Sumov.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Al don't can't pronounce that word, and Simon, who was called the Selot.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus is uh Luke is writing down all of the disciples, and he's mentioning all of the disciples, but he mentions that Simon was a selot.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Now, celots were like rebels, they wanted to overthrow Rome for God, they are waiting for the Messiah, so the Messiah will overthrow Rome with military, with power.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Now, in Jesus' crew, in Jesus' disciples, we have Matthew who worked for them, and now you have Simon, leader, who is a zealot that is a rebel against this people, and this is a great lesson in the family of God, in the kingdom of God, you will have different views on things than I will, and you will have different, and and and I will have views that you're not gonna like.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: That doesn't mean that we're not with the same common mission, and what the gospel teaches us is to put all of those things aside and put the main thing, the main thing, which is to expand the kingdom of God and move forward.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Um, I love this.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: This is so good, and yeah, that's a very well-taken point.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, because I mean it's like it's tough enough in any church with diverse groups of people of all different types of backgrounds, you know.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: But Jesus had to have some really tense conversations and uh you know, people kind of snippy at each other and various things just among his 12, and much less than having to deal with all the other rest of the people out there.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: But that's the beauty, also, is how Jesus is inclusive, he's bringing in uh the gospel, and we've talked about this before, is inclusive and exclusive.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: It's inclusive to all people, wherever, but it's exclusive in that our number one person we're focused on is Jesus.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: It's about Jesus.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So these 12, the the 12 disciples also represent uh the 12 tribes.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: So Israel had 12 tribes.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Now he's calling 12 disciples because he is creating a new Israel.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Like I said, Israel had 12 sons and became the 12 tribes.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Now he's calling 12 disciples because he's starting a new Israel.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: It is only uh it is not only for ethical Israel, ethic Israel, Israelites, but we get to be part of the new Israel through what God is building through the disciples.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Um, they are also called the 12 apostles.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Uh so that's chapter six, chapter seven.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, theme in Luke is that the outsiders again, um, they are brought in as insiders, and sometimes the insiders are pushed out because of the way that Jesus is asking some of the questions.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Now, book uh chap uh chapter seven, it has an incredible story of the centurion.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Now, a centurion is a military commander who had um power over, I believe it's a hundred people, a hundred people.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Well, centurion would be a hundred, but he would have at least a minimum of a hundred soldiers.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: And so today there's squadrons, there's various other things that represent certain numbers, but obviously he was a person of power and influence.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: So this Roman soldier, one thing that they understood well was authority.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: If a soldier will make say a command, whoever was underneath them, they will go and do whatever was said.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Now, Jesus is encountering a centurion who is asking Jesus to heal uh one of his servants.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And he's Jesus wants to go and says, No, no, no, I'm not worthy for you to come.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: He says, Just say the word.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And Jesus goes all of a sudden and said, I have not seen faith like this in Israel.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Because they a Roman understood that somebody with authority says something, it will happen.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And this is how we should be looking at the words of our Lord Jesus.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: That when he says something, he has the authority for that to be fulfilled, and because of that, the servant is healed, and Jesus is amazed by this men's uh that by this men's um faith because he understood authority, and often that's what we don't understand, it's authority.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And uh when Jesus says something, it's not up for debate, it's what we need to do, it's how we need to surrender and do those things.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, chapter eight, uh, this is a radical side of the gospel.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Chapter eight, one, two through three says this soon after he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with him, and also some woman had been uh some hold on, some woman who had been healed of evil spirits and uh infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, from whose seven demons had gone out, and Johanna, the wife of Chesu, Herald's household manager, and Susanna, and many other who provided for them out of their means.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Here we have a great picture of the people that provided for Jesus' ministry.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: We have a group of women.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Why it's Luke intentionally mentioning this woman, because in that culture, women will be outsiders, and Luke is including them in the gospel and the key role that they play in the gospel that they were pretty much funding Jesus' ministry, and this is also an image of them being disciples of Jesus.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: So uh that's something that really caught my attention as I was reading it, and then we have the famous um chapter, chapter in chapter eight, when Jesus goes and heals uh the woman, uh gyros' daughter, and the woman with the issue of blood.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Now, woman with the issue of blood will be someone who will be an outsider.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Because of her condition, she was not allowed to be in community.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Now, something that's very interesting is that gyros is a it's it's a it's um it's a religious leader, he's a ruler of the uh of the synagogue.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Probably gyrus, probably, the Bible doesn't specify this.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: I'm just reading in between the lines.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Probably gyrus was the person who excluded this woman out of the community because that was his role in the synagogue.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Now, this woman was not supposed to be in the crowd, she has the faith, goes touch Jesus, she is healed, power comes out of him, and he says, Who touched me?
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Which is a crazy question because if you read the gospels, you know there are hundreds and thousands of people everywhere that Jesus is walking, so probably lots of people are touching him.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: He asks the question, Who touched me that the disciples are like, Come on, like, what do you mean, who?
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Like, you look at all these people.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: He says, No, I know because power came out of me.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: And then he calls her daughter, which talks about identity.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: He talks about that she is a child of God.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: But I also believe that the reason why he's saying that is because he is trying to teach Jairus not necessarily a lesson in a bad way, but a lesson in the sense of you are supposed to take care of my daughters in Israel.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Now I'm on my way to heal your daughter, but I want you to understand that you are supposed to take care of my daughters.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Which it was really interesting when I was reading one of the commentaries that um it says that probably part of the reasons before Jesus healed Jairo's daughter, he wanted to reconcile his relationship with this woman who had the issue of blood.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: We don't know all of those things.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: It's something that I've just been studying and reading.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: I read commentaries, they're not always 100%, but it gives us a little bit of like understanding of what's what's happening.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Then he goes on and heals uh the daughter.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of like a little bit of chapter eight, chapter nine.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Um, chapter nine marks a huge shift in the gospel of Luke because from this moment on there is a journey towards Jerusalem, and that means towards the crucifixion.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: So now from chapter, I believe it's chapter nine through nineteen, um, that's what's gonna happen is Jesus is making his way to be crucified, and um he also starts preparing the disciples for his departure, where he's not gonna be there.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, you have the feeding of the five thousand, and the feeding of the five thousand, they say, Hey, send them home.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's no food.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: And what Jesus pretty much asking, no, what are you gonna do?
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: He is not questioning, like just because they don't have faith, he is preparing them.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: There's gonna be a time that I'm not gonna be here.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: What will you do then?
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And so then we have here the feeding of the 5,000, and what do they do?
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: They they did exactly what Jesus told them to do, and just did it later on in the chapter.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: They bring uh a young boy who is um demon-possessed, and the disciples cannot cast out the demon.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: What does Jesus do?
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I think we often just look at the words of Jesus where he says, you know, you faithless generation, and we think that they didn't have faith.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: But really, what's happening here is one, yes, he is rebuking them, but two, he's showing them how to how to cast out a demon as well.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: So we are seeing that shift where Jesus is now, it's preparing the disciples for him not to be there present uh with him.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, chapter 10 has lots of parables.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: My favorite one, and that's the one that I like to talk often, is uh the good Samaritan, because in there the question is asked, Who is my neighbor?
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Uh they were um uh they were Jesus and the young lawyer have two different definitions of who the neighbor is.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: Because for the young lawyer, the definition of a neighbor was just my my my fellow Jew.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: And Jesus makes it very clear that your low your your neighbor is every single person, whether they come from your same race or they don't come from the same same race.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: So um that's what Jesus kind of like why he's asking the questions.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: He says, tells them the story of the good Samaritan, tell them, hey, there was a man who was beat up, and a Levi came.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Levi was supposed to take care of him and didn't.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Then a priest crosses the other side, and then a Samaritan comes through and he says, Who was a neighbor?
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: He can't even mention the word Samaritan because Samaritans were half, they were like seen a half-breathed of Jews, they were not even allowed in the whole temple, they were just specific areas.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: And Jesus makes it clear.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: So who is a neighbor?
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: He says, Oh, the one who showed mercy.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: He couldn't even say the word Samaritan.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: He's just showing like the outsider, it's part of the story.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: So uh very interesting.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: So that is a little bit of Luke chapter one, uh five through ten.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, that is so good.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Now, let me just kind of um what I kind of got out of what you're saying, and what as my as I think through the book of Luke, you know, yeah, Luke chapter four, we wrapped up last week, and you kind of touched on uh verses 18 and 19, where he stands up and quotes um the book of Isaiah, and then after he quotes the book of Isaiah, which is about how he came to set the captive free and heal the broken, um, open the blinded eyes and so forth.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: He then he does what he rolls up the scroll and he takes a seat.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: A seat, which most believe that it was it was an iconic moment, it was speaking volumes of like, I have fulfilled this.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I am that person that Isaiah talked about.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, which is which is so good.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: But then it's interesting to me because you're right, as you mentioned this, is that you even used the term that uh he's inviting the disciples to be a part of him.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And this is what he's doing here.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: It's calling back to the book of um Genesis in in Eden, when God made man and woman, he invited man and woman to partner with him.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Um, it says that everything was good.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: In fact, when he created man and woman, he said, well, specifically created woman, he said it was very good.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, uh, which I agree with that.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Um but he he but he never said it was perfect.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: He said it was good.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we call the Garden of Eden perfect, and which uh there had to be something to subdue and to take dominion over.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: And obviously, you have this talking serpent that comes along that needs to be put under their feet, not over them, dictating some things.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: So they were told to to name the animals, to uh multiply, and then and so what you have in the book of Luke is Jesus is showing them that okay, here's what we're doing you're partnering with me, just like back in Genesis.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: Now we're gonna partner again, now we're gonna multiply.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: We're gonna multiply.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: You see him going to the twelve and then the seventy-two, uh, and then moving on and on.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: And each time it's interesting that whenever um Jesus begins to go around, he begins to heal the sick, begins to work.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: And then chapter number six is where you got where he calls the the uh the twelve after spending all night in prayer.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Which I skipped that part, but very important.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Which obviously there was tons of people around him.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: When talks about disciples, there was tons of disciples around him.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: He just focused on who are the twelve that I want to really invest in.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And then of those twelve, there'd be three that he'd even invest into a higher level.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: And so he chose those apostles to do what?
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: I think Mark says it a little clearer in chapter number three, but specifically these three reasons.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: One, to partner with Jesus, to be with Jesus, to spend time with him, to be intimate with him, to just know his heart, to get his DNA.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: And then secondly, after you do that is to preach about Jesus.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: They're gonna send him out to preach, to proclaim the good news of Jesus, what he came to do.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Well, what was that?
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Luke chapter 4, verse 18 and 19.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: You know, and then the final part was they gave them power to back the words.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: So Jesus said, I will give you power over demons and over sickness and whatever it is, and you're gonna go.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: And then what you see is Jesus now has partnered with them in this process.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: You mentioned the centurion soldier, which in you know when he says, I haven't seen such great faith in all of Israel, that's really that was a slap in the face to the Israel.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, that was because this is the enemy.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: It was hard for them to take that.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: They hated Jesus.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and Jesus guarded his words, and this is where he begins to really lean into Jerusalem.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because when he starts making statements like that, he's getting they're like, We gotta get rid of this dude.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, Jarus, you mentioned that.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: That's a great example how that Jesus is really putting this woman right under Jarus' nose.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: And then after he heals her, then what does Jarus hear?
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Hears that his daughter's dead.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Now, Jesus is not going to go heal the sick, he's he has to raise the dead by end up raising her back to life.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: But I believe that Jarus became an incredible part of the kingdom after that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: It says, you know, even after the on the day of Pentecost, that many of those that were part of the Jewish leadership, Pharisees and stuff, joined.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Uh the role.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: But then Jesus begins to work, and then in chapter number nine is when he gives the twelve the assignment and sends them out on their own.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: That's what you said about partnering with he sends them out on their own to what to preach this good news, to heal the sick, to pray for people.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: And then in chapter number 10, it's the story of those good Samaritan, but even before that was the story of what?
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Jesus sending out the 72 to do what the same thing.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: These people had spent time with him.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Now he's gonna send them out to preach the good news, and it gave them power over all these, all over all evil spirits.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: It's like you mentioned Genesis in the book of Genesis.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Man has dominion over everything.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Who had dominion?
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: God had dominion, he shared that with us.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: When we receive the Holy Spirit, it's that power that God has that He's sharing with us, not for our sake, but for the sake of people, for the sake of the kingdom of God.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: We have been called to partner with God.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: I love that you said that we're we're we're called to partner with him in what he wants to do in this time of history, because this is the only time of history that I'm alive in.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Yep, so good.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: So remember that partner, we're partners with God.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: When we when we come in union with Christ and come under his lordship, we're partners with him, then we'll proclaim what he has done, which be to know him and to make him known, but then he backs it up with power.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: The Holy Spirit's working in us.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, Isaiah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Isaiah, what a book, what a book.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: There are many things in here that I want to be able to cover.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna cover just a few things because we're it's a lot of ground, chapter 21 through 36.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: One thing that I will suggest as you are reading the Bible, or you've maybe you listen to it, um, don't just read it or look through it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Uh, if there is anything that stands out to you, highlighted, because one of the things that I love seeing in my Bible is when I write question marks, and then a year or two later I read that again and I understand what it is.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: It's like I can see the journey that I've been.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: You mentioned you've been devoted yourself to the word of God for 40 years.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: You know, I have done this for not 40 years, is it?
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: But I do know that you're not even 40 years old.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but 40 years from now, my knowledge of the word of God will increase, and this is why we do it as as a habit every single day, not as a ritual, but as a habit, because we want to grow spiritually.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: So, Isaiah chapter um 21 and 36, these are part of the oracles against the nations.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: So, as you are reading, you're gonna see that this is, for example, chapter 21, verse 1, the oracle concerning the wilderness of the sea, a whirlwinds in the negeb sweep on, it comes from the wilderness from the terrible land.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Now, this whole chapter, it's about uh Babylon.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Now, something important to understand is that Babylon, they were like self-proclaimed of people of orders, like they had order in their in their um culture, their gardens were in order.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: There's so many things that they but God is comparing them to what to the wilderness and the sea.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: What are these two two things uh represent to the Jews?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Chaos.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: These are two things that are uncontrollable, and God is pretty much telling that the Jews, you think that the partnering with this other nations because they seem that they have it all figured out and they have a good foundation, they are like the wilderness and like the sea.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Chaos is coming.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: So if you partner with them, you're gonna fall, and they fall against uh those people.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, chapter 21, uh, chapter 21, verse 9, it talks about the fallen Babylon.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Fallen, fallen is Babylon.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Actually, this is quoted in the book of Revelations that we just uh read.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: So you're gonna see a lot of you're gonna see a lot of Isaiah in the gospels because Jesus quotes Isaiah, but you see some of this even in the book of Revelation.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: So God prophesied about some of those things even hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years uh before Isaiah 24 to 27.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: This is an apocalypse, so there is apocalyptic literature in these chapters, so you're gonna see a lot of images, you're gonna see a lot of symbols, a lot of visions.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: So this is not meant to just read uh little literally, so but it's like an understanding that some of these things are going to pass, but some of these things are going to pass even in the future.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Uh, but something important to understand too that Isaiah was a prophet, uh, but he also was a poet.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: The way that he writes, it's like in a poetic form.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So tell us a lot that Isaiah was very artistic on his writing.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: So, and what can artists do?
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: They can create uh images and things like that.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: So God uses Isaiah and what he knows to let people know what is going to happen.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: Something that happens in this chapters 25, 24 to 27, is a couple of words you're gonna see if phrases, I guess it's like on the day and on that day.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: So on the day, now uh there is a day that the Lord, uh there is a day of the Lord when judgment is going to come, uh, but now is going to be Babylon who is going to come and take Israel into captivity.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: So if you've been following uh the podcast for many months, when we talk, I think it's when we're talking about um uh the first five books of the Bible.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: I talked about the different uh a Susarian treaty.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: A Susarian treaty was there is a Saesarean and a vassal.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: God is a Sayerian, Israel was the vassal, and God is allowing them to live in the land, and they are the vassal.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: God is keeping the his promise, they can live in the land, but they must obey his laws.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: What do we know about Israel?
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: They don't obey the laws, and now judgment is coming.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: I think chapter 20 talks about how uh Isaiah was a literally like a living sermon because he was naked, he was barefoot.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's it's it's God is showing this is what's gonna happen to you because of your disobedience.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: So you see a lot of this also in the book in this section of 24 through 27.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, the day of the Lord also means uh that the day of the Lord, uh of the coming Lord, like that when Jesus returns, so all of these prophecies and visions are happening in the book of Isaiah, literally thousands of years ago, of something that is to come, which is one of the things that I love about the Bible.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: What I love about communion, what I love when we talked about baptism, we're talking about what Christ did, but what Christ is going to do.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Yes, and this has been part of who we are as people of God, where here we see what Christ did.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: There was judgment through Israel, through Israel, Assyria.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: But there is one day that one is going to come, and that is Jesus.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Not when he came, but also when he's gonna come in his return.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: All of these things are prophesied in this section.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Um, now apocalypse, this means revelation.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: A revelation doesn't mean that it's like the end of the world.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I think often we think of when we talk about the the apocalypse, who thing is like when things are just gonna end.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: That is not the definition of the word, that is more of a modern definition.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: And we talked about this when we talked about uh the book of Revelation, uh, Isaiah 28 through 35.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, this whole section is pretty much God telling them stop trusting uh Egypt.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: And in the book of Exodus, and in throughout the history, God always tells the Israelites, do not go above go back for horses.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: Now, horses were a representation of Egypt, do not go back to Egypt, do not trust Egypt.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: It's not that Egypt was a just a bad group of people, it's that God didn't want his people to trust somebody else rather than himself.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: So it's not that Egypt was bad or corrupt, which they probably were as a culture, but what point that God is trying to make is do not trust in horses, do not trust in chariots, trust in the Lord, trust in me.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: So this whole section is don't trust, stop trusting Egypt.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: There are three chapters in those three chapters.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: There are three oracles, good, and there are three woes.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Um chapter 28.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, my Bible, the ESV, instead of woe, it says the word a h uh, and it's meant to be very like strong language.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Woe to you.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: It's like uh that is that type of that that type of like emotion that God is saying.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: So the three are woe to uh Ephraim.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Am I saying it right?
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: E P H R A I M.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Ephraim, I think.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: That'll work, Ephraim.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: Ephraim.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Ephraim.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Now, what does Ephraim represent?
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Represents the strongest tribe in the north, they are the representation of the northern kingdom.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and and in chapter 28, it talks about how they are giving themselves to wine, to drunkenness, and God is woe to you.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: Now, wine it was a representation of a covenant with God.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: One was a representation of joy, but they have misused it.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Now, the people are drunkards and the priest, so it was God is not happy with the northern side.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Uh, is uh Isaiah 29?
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, or woe.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Ariel.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: Now, this is not Ariel like the movie that I watched when I was a little kid with a little mermaid.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Ariel was Jerusalem, and that was a nickname uh for Jerusalem.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, and now he the this woe is because they have neglected being a burning altar.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Because they have neglected being a uh a burning altar to the Lord, now they're gonna burn as a city.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Strong language, judgment is coming.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: There's nothing you can do.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, Babylon comes and burns Jerusalem.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, Isaiah chapter 30, or whoa, stubborn children.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: 30 uh verse 7 says, Egypt helps is worthless and empty.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: Therefore, I have called her Rahab, who is who sits still.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Now, this Rahab is another um another chaos monster in their Jewish literature, um, like Leviatum.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Um, so they partner with Assyria in Egypt, and so partner with Assyria in Egypt, and you will bring chaos into your life.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: God is just telling them, do not make those treaties with them.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Now they made treaties with them, and God is saying, I'm not present in those treaties.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: This is you yourself doing this.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, Isaiah chapter 31 through 32.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is a Judah as a nation political crisis.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: Again, don't trust Egypts, don't trust horses, trust in the Lord.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: Isaiah chapter 32, verse 1 through 8 talks and prophesies of a coming king that is coming to reign.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: There, you see the promise of Jesus of that coming king.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: I say chapter 32, 9 through 10 says, Rise up, a woman who are at ease, hear my voice.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Your complacent daughters give ear to my speech.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: In little more than a year, you will shudder.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: You, you complacent women, for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Here we have a specific date.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: The reason why I read that is because in chapter 6, in a little more than a year.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: Now it's giving us a specific time.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: We know that Assyria comes in 701 BC and takes it into captivity.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Here we have in 7 uh 702, where this prophecy is uh uh taking place.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Now, one verse, Pastor Rodney, that I want to read.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Um, it's chapter uh 32 verse 9 through 10.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: It says this 9 through 10.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: Where is it at?
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: No, that's the one that I read.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: It's chapter 32, verse 15.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: It says, Until the spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness become a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a uh forest, the promise of the Holy Spirit.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: We often we think that it's only in the book of Joel when it says that his spirits will be poured out, but actually, throughout some of these prophets, God actually prophesies the promise of the Holy Spirit, and you might be wondering why is the Holy Spirit so important?
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Pastor Ronnie, why is the Holy Spirit important in our lives?
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: From the very beginning, in the beginning, God, what did he do?
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Says that his spirit hovered over everything.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: The Spirit of God is God, God is Spirit.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: We can't worship him without the Holy Spirit.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: The Holy Spirit gives life to everything.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: The ruach of God, that's the Hebrew word for spirit, which translated into several different words like energy, breath, wind.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Um in the New Testament, it's I've always heard it as pneuma, but actually it's probably panuma.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Now they're realizing that probably we've been mistranslating that word uh from what happened in the translation.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's still found hundreds of times throughout the New Testament.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Again, it's the Spirit of God.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: What is the Spirit of God?
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Hear me.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: Every single person listening right now, everything that's been created, it was the word of God that went out, but the spirit of God made it happen.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: When God created man out of the dust of the ground, what did he do?
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: He breathed in the nostrils of man.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: What did he breathe in him?
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Ruach, spirit.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Man became a living being.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Hear me.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: You have a spirit in you, but do you have the Holy Spirit?
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: And what I mean by that is that it's because of the breath of God that you live.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: So you can't live apart from God.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: He controls every every breath.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: But then the moment that I acknowledge that I cannot live my life without Him and I need Christ as my Lord and Savior, then the Holy Spirit comes and takes up residence in your life.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: And what happens there is now you have literally surrendered your spirit to the Spirit of God to rule and reign over your life.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: And so throughout the Old Testament, the prophets are saying what is to come.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: The Spirit of God was moving throughout the Old Testament too, upon individuals at different times, but he's speaking of a day and age when things are going to change.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: And obviously, that Jesus was born of spirit.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Jesus became the second Adam.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: The first Adam was born of spirit.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Taken from the dust of the ground, God breathed life into him.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Jesus becomes the second one as God takes the dust of men, a woman who's the out of the dust of the ground.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: God breathes the Holy Spirit and He becomes a living being.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: So therefore, He was not born of the will of man and stuff.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: So then Jesus lived the sinless life.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: He becomes the perfect, the rescuer that we always wanted, uh that Adam failed, and then we wanted in Noah.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: We wanted in Moses, we wanted in David, we wanted a and all of them continued.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: They rose to the top and then it just kind of crumbled.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Jesus finished the job.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: That's why we said on the cross, it is finished.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: He breathed his last, gave it up a ghost, and then validated in his resurrection.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: So that now he says, It is good for you that I go away.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: He was already sent out before his resurrection because I'm gonna send you the Holy Spirit.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Now when we receive Christ as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit takes up residence, power.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: But that's not the end all, that's the start of the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: Because the Holy Spirit's unlimited.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: John chapter 3, verse 34, Jesus said, I he the spirit was upon him without measure.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Well, the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead right lives on us.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: So therefore, you're only limited by how much that you daily dive into the word of God, receiving, asking for the spirit.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: The spirit is unlimited.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Whatever you need, whatever gift, whatever fruit of the spirit, it's available to you through a life of surrender to God.
- 41:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: I just love seeing that in the book of Isaiah because that promise often Christians can take the Holy Spirit um lightly or not even devote uh themselves to understand and know that the Holy Spirit lives inside of us.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: That is a beautiful promise throughout the Old Testament, and we have it today.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: It's not like it's going to come.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: We have it, it is present.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: Uh, this people in the old testament wish they had it.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: So I just I just wanted to uh encourage you guys.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: This is one of those promises in the old testament that has been fulfilled uh already.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: So Isaiah chapter, uh, we're gonna continue in the next chapters, uh, next episode.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: Uh something just to um finish our Isaiah is you're gonna read some other years and you're gonna realize, oh, wait, hold on.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: How is Isaiah was in the 1700s and also in the 500s?
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: Um there are some uh theologians that believe that chapter one through chapter 39 were written by Isaiah, and then chapter 40 on were written by the disciples of Isaiah later on in life that finished the work that he started.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: That doesn't take that doesn't take away the the the that it was uh that it wasn't Isaiah because it was the people that were trained under him.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: So it's the same way with David and the Psalms.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, 71 to 73 of the Psalms were definitely David.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: Most people believe 73 of them were definitely David, and then the rest of them were very close.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Uh well, uh about another many more of them are very disciples of his for sure.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: And then others are descendants on down the line, but it's still the same spirit of David.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: They carry that spirit, absolutely, and even the there's about 50 of them that are anonymous of the Psalms, and but pretty much they're still the same, the same DNA we call.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: We we talk about we want people on our staff and people that understand our DNA.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: Yep, that's what you have here, and it's the same way with Isaiah.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Beautiful, yeah, absolutely just wonderful.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: Now, I do want to say um in Isaiah um chapter 34 and 35, kind of wraps up.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: You kind of hear this theme, and just read this one verse, Isaiah 34, verse 1.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Come here and listen, O nations of the earth, let the world and everything in it hear my words.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: And that's it.
- 43:39SPEAKER_01: And they weren't listening.
- 43:41SPEAKER_01: That's when judgment came, as you talked about.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: But really, that's it's a call back and it's a call today.
- 43:46SPEAKER_01: Come near, listen to my words.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: The beauty of when they are uh, which you will say, how there is beauty in being a slave for all those years after they take them in captivity, is that when they return.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: There is no idolatry anymore.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: They're not worshiping Baal.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: They're not worshiping.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: So God did the work that He needed to do during that exile as well.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Psalms.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Psalms 101 and 102.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: Here we go.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Psalms 101 is basically the kind of emphasis on these two chapters is kind of living under the rule of the eternal king.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: I'm going to kind of lean into that.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: These two Psalms complement one another.
- 44:32SPEAKER_01: It's interesting that one of them, Psalms 101, is written by David.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm going to, I'm actually going to spend a little time in 101 and kind of just give a quick little overview of 102.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: But um but 101 teaches how God's people should live under his reign.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: And then 102 really speaks to it, reminds us why we can trust God's reign, uh, even in seasons of suffering.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: And I think we've been talking about that.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: And then the Psalms are beautiful.
- 44:59SPEAKER_01: And you tell me a little bit about the Psalms.
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: Why do you enjoy reading the Psalms?
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, some people um really enjoy the Proverbs over Psalms.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: And I enjoy Proverbs because I get some things out of it, but I love Psalms.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: I love the emotion, I love the depth of it.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: I think that it wasn't my one of my favorite books several years ago.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: It's becoming one of those favorite books because I feel like I've I've lived a few more things now in life, and I have gone through some things in my life.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: So I have a different appreciation of crying out to the Lord.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: So I'd say I like it more now than I did probably five years ago, for sure.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: That is a very good point.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: And I think that that is well said and very good to consider because I've seen that in my life too.
- 45:47SPEAKER_01: I remember when I was a teenager and young adult, I would read every day, you know, one of the proverbs, and you know, one proverb, you know, one proverb of the day, yeah, for for each day of the month on 31 days.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: There's 31 proverbs.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: And so I would read and and I really valued some of that stuff.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: And I think it had its place and time.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: But I agree with you that life and its ups and downs, and it's my emotional roller coaster and the pain and the suffering has given me a deep appreciation for Psalms.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: It really has.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: Well, together, these two, Psalms 101, 102, uh, kind of teach the kingdom of God is built on holy living and sustained by the faithfulness unto the eternal king.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: Now, on Psalms 102, and I'll just kind of just touch base again on that.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: It's just the theme here is when life feels like it is falling apart, God's kingdom remains secure because the eternal king reigns, his position hasn't changed, he is still on the throne, he is always the same.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: And so I just want to I'm gonna kind of leave that at 102, but let's go back to 101 and I want to lean into it a little bit because 101 to me is so much about relationships.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: And we've said this before that the kingdom of God is built on relationships.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: And if you don't mind, uh go ahead and read um, read read read verse number one.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: Of 101.
- 47:17SPEAKER_01: Sorry, switch.
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: 101, and let's read verse number one.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: One.
- 47:21SPEAKER_00: I I'm reading the ESV.
- 47:23SPEAKER_00: It says, I will sing of steadfast love and justice.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: To you, O Lord, I will make music.
- 47:31SPEAKER_01: Okay, so stop there for just a moment.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: David is really his foundation, his key relationship is his Lord.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: And out of this, he begins to realize my responsibility for love and justice.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: And I cannot understand love and justice out apart from God.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: You know, we deal with relationships, and all of us want to have justice or want to be done right or treated right or so, but we can't understand and wrap our mind around it apart from a relationship with God because he is the only one that really is love, and he is the only one that is just and so therefore we cannot administer, give, understand what it means to do either one of those things apart from him.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: So he's really laying out that the relationship thing starts with God first and foremost.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: And then read verse number two.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: I will ponder the way that is blameless.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, when will you come to me?
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: I will ponder, say it again.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: I will ponder the way that is blameless.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: The way that is blameless.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, when will you come to me?
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: Okay, so he's acknowledging a perfect way, he's acknowledging, and it kind of ties into uh some earlier psalms and ties into even some proverbs of just really acknowledging there the way of God and being careful to live a blameless life and to live a holy life before Him and to be a person of integrity.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact, the end part of that he even says, go ahead and read the rest of that verse again, the end part of that.
- 49:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry.
- 49:12SPEAKER_01: I will walk with integrity of heart within my house.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: Okay, so he's really laying out this that it all begins, this blameless life, this holy life.
- 49:24SPEAKER_01: God, I gotta have you to live this life.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: That's what he's calling out, even when he's asking the question.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: And then also he's leaning into um that a life of integrity starts in the home.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: Somebody told me years ago, Christian, that um success in life is when those who know you the best love and appreciate you the most.
- 49:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Not by, you know, how big of an influencer you are in our culture, how big of a how much money you make.
- 49:53SPEAKER_01: Uh it really boils down to when those that really know you, yeah.
- 49:58SPEAKER_01: It's like I'll have some people come to me and and they're like, oh, they think that I'm just what is it?
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: Because I get up and preach in front of you know hundreds of people every weekend, and and they're like, think that I got it all down.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I don't, I don't have it all down.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: And and so, but they kind of look at me like, I wish my husband was like that.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: I wish I like that.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: And sometimes every once in a while, if a lady kind of leans in that way, I'll kind of like, you don't live with me.
- 50:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: I want to talk to Shannon to find out what I'm really like.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, because it's easy to get polished up and you know, comb my hair just right and look good in front of everybody and say the right words.
- 50:35SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna be slipping up and messing up up there, at least I hope I won't.
- 50:40SPEAKER_01: But but at home, when the pressure's on, struggling, things aren't going well, and the finances aren't good, and things are slipping and slipping, and I'm like, and then all of a sudden, am I testy?
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: How am I responding to my wife?
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: How am I talking?
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: What am I doing?
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: That's a whole different ball game.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: And so I think that it be it's just interesting to me, it says that that it kind of begins at home, it starts there, and in verse number three, he kind of continues I will refuse to look at anything vowel and vulgar.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: I hate all who deal crookedly.
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: I will have nothing to do with them.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: It's just interesting to me.
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: It just like there's so much that pops up on my screens all the time.
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: This thing here pops up on my computer and what what am I what am I dwelling on?
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: Am I quick to remove that from my eyes and to look another way?
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: Am I quick to make sure that I put accountability in my life that guards me from in realizing that I I if I give my eyes, it's gonna impact my mind, the things I think on I used to hear I said this years ago, the things I the places I go determine the things I do, the things I do determine the things I think, the things I think determines um what I begin to do, and what I do determines who I become.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: And we've got to be very careful that we gotta we gotta set the boundaries spiritually in our lives.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact, why don't you talk about that in regards to relationships in your life?
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and how that you have boundaries in your life.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: And these people help you.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 52:19SPEAKER_01: Accountability is only good as you make it.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 52:21SPEAKER_01: You need people in your life.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: So I have several people in my life to to make decisions.
- 52:26SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, right now I'm in a place that um we might need a new car for our family, and uh it's you you're vulnerable because you're letting these people into your life to help you make a wise decision, right?
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: So it's it's uh the you say it's only good as you make it, right?
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: So I have that big standard of my life of accountability spiritually and in relations and and relationships in my in my life.
- 52:54SPEAKER_00: So this four men that are in my life, pray for me, believe in me, but help me make decisions.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: And when I and I and I have made good decisions because it's just not me.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: I can convince myself of anything, Pastor Rodney.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: I always tell people, nobody can convince me to do something stupid more than I can convince myself.
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: I think that applies to all of us.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and having people around you keep you from that.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: In the counsel of many, there is wisdom, is what the scripture says.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: Good, good.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 53:22SPEAKER_01: I love what you just said.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: The counsel of many, there is protection, there is wisdom.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: There was different words and different ways, but the more you get the word of God in you, more that things just flow out.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: The word of God flows out of you.
- 53:36SPEAKER_01: Verse number four, it says that I will reject perverse ideas, stay away from every evil.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Verse five, I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors, I will not endure conceit, and pride.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: Um verse six, I will search for faithful people to be my companions, like you have.
- 54:01SPEAKER_01: Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: He so they're dealing with relationships, the type of people that you need to make sure that you cut out of your life.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: And I love what our friend Big Rob says, Rob Clay is he calls it uh circle decision, where you basically the circle of influence in your life, you cut away those that need to be cut away so that you can become all that God wants you to be.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, verse number seven, I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the Lord from their grip.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: What is yours said that first part of that verse in that verse eight?
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: Uh morning by morning, I will destroy all the wicked in the land.
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: All the wicked, I will destroy all the wicked.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Um I I like the word ferret there because uh it's a different word, and uh, you know what a ferret is, don't you?
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: No, I was very I was like, which word is that one in my Bible?
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Uh there's there's actually an animal called a ferret.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: And um, do you even know what a ferret is?
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm I'm yeah, yeah.
- 55:25SPEAKER_01: So I'll just tell a little story here and we'll find out the people that actually uh might do a podcast thing and find out who did somebody listen to the end of this podcast.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Um one time whenever Shannon and I Shannon was pregnant with Gavin.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: It was probably a few months in, it was July when we made this trip to um Maine to marry a couple who was part of a ministry of students at Oklahoma State whenever I was doing college ministry there, uh working with on the on the campus, not in the local churches, working on the school.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: And um they asked me to marry them.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: He got saved in the ministry, wanted to marry them.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: So we went up there to marry them.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: They took care of our flights.
- 56:03SPEAKER_01: We went up there and we made a little vacation too, spent several days, but we we didn't have any resources, no money.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: So we just stay in with people.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: And so we stay with this family, and they're in the middle of nowhere in Maine.
- 56:14SPEAKER_01: I'm talking nowhere, Maine.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: When you say Maine, that's already nowhere.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: That's nowhere.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think you have to explain a little puddle jumper from Boston, flew into Boston, then took a little puddle jumper, a little small little plane.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: I heard it's very pretty though.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, it was it's beautiful.
- 56:28SPEAKER_01: We had a great time.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: We had a great time.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: Flew in there, and um, they put us up in this upper attic area, and Shanna were we're worn slick because we've traveled all day.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: It's the first night.
- 56:39SPEAKER_01: We get in bed, we're laying there, and they had these wood floors, and as we're laying there, it's pitch dark, and we hear this like a little, like little claws or something on the wood floor.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: It's just like we both listen because we can't see each other, it's dark, pitch dark.
- 56:52SPEAKER_01: And we're like, we're listening to that, and it's just really that's odd.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: Is that a rat?
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Is it what is that?
- 56:59SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden, it went up under the sheets, hit my big toe, and it started going up my leg.
- 57:11SPEAKER_01: I grabbed it about halfway up my thigh with with both hands, and Shannon hears me yell.
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: I'm throwing the cover off, I got this thing, and I just all I'm holding, I'm holding a I don't know what it is, it's just a furry thing that felt like it was about eight to ten inches long, and I grabbed it and I slung it over and slammed it up against the wall.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: All I know is I want it dead.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: It's attacking me.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: It needs to be dead, and I just slung it up against the wall so hard.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: And of course, Shannon yells, they hear this slamming.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Of course, the family is like rushing upstairs to check on us to see what was going on.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: What they did not tell me is they had a ferret.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: And one of the girls would sleep in this upper bedroom, and at night, that ferret would come out because the ferrets just want dark, closed spaces, but they would come up and crawl in bed with this girl, this young so this is an animal?
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: It's an animal.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: Okay, and I'm telling you, scared me to death.
- 58:17SPEAKER_01: I'd never seen a ferret in my life.
- 58:18SPEAKER_01: I'd heard of a ferret, but I would not have known it.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Even when I saw it in the ground, when I turned on the lights, I did not know what it was.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: And they came in, and this family begins to get mad at me and gather around this lifeless ferret.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Of course, it wasn't dead, it didn't die.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: Fortunately, it was just knocked out, which at the time I could care less.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: They begin to nurture that thing, and it it ended up being okay.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah, but I had I was ferreting out a ferret, I was destroying that was attacking me.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: That's the whole point of this, and that's the whole message here is that we got to make sure that we guard the relationships in our life.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: Good, good, good, good.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: We surround ourselves with people that are going to grow us and support us and take us closer to Jesus.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: All right, so chapter number 18 of the book of Proverbs, and we will wrap up here.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: And I just want to give one verse.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: We cover a lot of things, but uh verse number two, you want to read it.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: And the ESV says, a fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: I just wrote understanding.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: Um, because mine says fool has no interest in understanding.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, growing in understanding should be a desirable life goal.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Learning from others and one's experiences and seeking wisdom should be integral to daily living.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Gaining knowledge and applying what you know is the essence of personal growth.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: To stop learning is to stop living a fruitful, meaningful life.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: It is to be a fool, not to grow.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: So, wow.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Christian, thank you so very much.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: So good.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: Appreciate you taking the time and I appreciate uh each and every week, all of you that are joining us.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: And please make sure, give them some advice here.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: Like, subscribe if you're on YouTube, if you're on Facebook, make sure you share this, let people know to watch it on Spotify or on Apple, leave us a review.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: That goes such a long way for more people to find it.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: Because I don't know if you understand how these things work.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: It's kind of hard sometimes for me to understand.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: But if people are like trying to type, like how to understand Proverbs 18, this can come up, especially because it's going to be touching this, but it will let people know oh, there's people interested, so more people would like to hear this.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: And the whole point of this, we want people to engage with the word of God, not necessarily listen to us, but for them to have an understanding of what the word of God says.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: Excellent.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: Thank you very much.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_01: We'll see you next time on the company.
