- 0:16Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:20Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar Blizzarre from lazarn Hello, everybody nailed it,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Joined has always buy powers.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Risk.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars The thing I
- 0:34Speaker 1: hate about people complaining about Tony You don't like it
- 0:37Speaker 1: because you can't stop it. There's a way to stop
- 0:38Speaker 1: the touch push. Don't let the Eagles get to third
- 0:40Speaker 1: and one. Some people say there's injury concerns. All the
- 0:43Speaker 1: data suggests that there's no injury problems. Is a lower
- 0:46Speaker 1: injury rate. And then there's the it's not a real
- 0:49Speaker 1: football play. You might want to look up the history
- 0:52Speaker 1: of the sport where it has its roots. You want
- 0:54Speaker 1: to beat the good teams, get better, don't ask the
- 0:56Speaker 1: league to stop them for you catch. That was a
- 1:00Speaker 1: good take by you on the touch push. Thank you,
- 1:03Speaker 1: You're welcome. I don't give you a lot of compliments
- 1:05Speaker 1: on new takes, So there you go.
- 1:06Speaker 3: You know it's genuine when I rarely do that. Hello everybody,
- 1:10Speaker 3: Evan Lazar, Alex Barth, Patriots Catch twenty two. Next couple
- 1:14Speaker 3: hours talking Patriots OTAs.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We literally just.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Walked from the practice field into the radio studio as
- 1:20Speaker 3: practice was wrapping up for the Patriots here on this Wednesday.
- 1:24Speaker 3: So we're going to get into all of our takeaways.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We'll start the top of the show with that. We'll
- 1:28Speaker 3: take your lovely calls and emails as well as the
- 1:30Speaker 3: show goes on here. But we'll open with the show
- 1:34Speaker 3: with just our general thoughts on this practice. And I
- 1:38Speaker 3: would say the big storyline from last week was the
- 1:41Speaker 3: interceptions by Drake May during the open practice to the
- 1:44Speaker 3: media last Tuesday, Right, was it Tuesday or Wednesday?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Last week?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Today's Wednesday, So I think it was last Tuesday that
- 1:51Speaker 3: Drake May had that four interception practice heard around the world.
- 1:54Speaker 3: That was a big story. Interception free practice for Drake
- 1:59Speaker 3: May today. That's always a positive. There weren't any turnovers.
- 2:04Speaker 3: There was a time when the ball hit the ground
- 2:06Speaker 3: on a boarded snap, but frankly, it happens really quickly
- 2:10Speaker 3: and there's no film to go watch back, so I'm
- 2:11Speaker 3: not sure if that was a center quarterback issue. Is
- 2:14Speaker 3: a quarterback center exchange issue, Let's just put it to
- 2:17Speaker 3: you that way. But no interceptions, that's a positive. I
- 2:21Speaker 3: still thought though in general, and look, it's it's May
- 2:24Speaker 3: like we always say it's May twenty eighth. It's a
- 2:27Speaker 3: long way away from even padded practices, let alone the
- 2:31Speaker 3: season or preseason. But there was still a general feeling
- 2:36Speaker 3: of maybe uncertainty or just inconsistency that I saw from
- 2:40Speaker 3: Drake May in the number one offense, where it still
- 2:43Speaker 3: felt a little bit clunky at times. There are some
- 2:45Speaker 3: high throws, there were some holding to the ball. Doesn't
- 2:49Speaker 3: always seem like he's one hundred percent sure what he's
- 2:51Speaker 3: looking at just yet. So good news, it's turnover free thought.
- 2:55Speaker 3: He had some moments today that he maybe didn't have
- 2:58Speaker 3: last week, and in the positive direction that we can
- 3:00Speaker 3: break down. But in general, I still feel like we're
- 3:04Speaker 3: in those early days of a transition right now.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he just looked unsure at times, which is the
- 3:10Speaker 1: best way I can put it, not all the time.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He did get in a rhythm there at one point
- 3:13Speaker 1: midway through practice, and really was Hunter Henry that kind
- 3:16Speaker 1: of helped get him through it, which duh, right, it's
- 3:18Speaker 1: his favorite receiver. So but just yeah, it's it's clearly
- 3:22Speaker 1: still a feeling how process for him.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah, there was one pass, you know, over the middle
- 3:26Speaker 3: of the field to Hunter Henry that I've seen Drake
- 3:29Speaker 3: May make on film last year one hundred times and
- 3:32Speaker 3: just a dig cut and cut to Henry that he
- 3:35Speaker 3: was just a little bit early and maybe a little
- 3:37Speaker 3: bit high to it that went incomplete, and that's one
- 3:40Speaker 3: that you're used to seeing Drake May make in his sleep.
- 3:44Speaker 3: And so there was some of that, maybe not the turnovers,
- 3:48Speaker 3: which is were catastrophic turnovers that we saw at times,
- 3:52Speaker 3: but maybe more so that on the positive side, I
- 3:56Speaker 3: thought what you saw a little bit today when when
- 3:59Speaker 3: he started to settle down or settle in with some
- 4:01Speaker 3: pocket movement and bouncing around the pocket a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 3: some of that off platform stuff that we have grown
- 4:08Speaker 3: to love here from Drake May. So there's some of
- 4:11Speaker 3: those elements to it as well. Honestly, you know, from
- 4:14Speaker 3: an offensive standpoint, from a scheme standpoint, I want to
- 4:18Speaker 3: get give too much away or going too much detail
- 4:21Speaker 3: about the scheme, but so far it just feels like
- 4:24Speaker 3: the Josh McDaniels install like I haven't seen. There's a
- 4:27Speaker 3: lot of talk about McDaniel's going to college programs and
- 4:32Speaker 3: maybe adding things or innovating his offense or updating his offense,
- 4:37Speaker 3: whatever word adjective you want to use to describe it.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So far, we've seen a lot. They've done a lot,
- 4:43Speaker 3: which I think is always a McDaniel's staple. They all,
- 4:47Speaker 3: you know, McDaniels will have everything in his bag, and
- 4:50Speaker 3: they have done some outside zone maybe like more than
- 4:53Speaker 3: I was expecting, and some moving pockets as well, which
- 4:56Speaker 3: I think is good that type of stuff, even though
- 4:59Speaker 3: the pay haven't necessarily been overly successful with that over
- 5:04Speaker 3: the last couple of years. In theory, it fits Drake
- 5:08Speaker 3: May's skill set really nicely to have the pocket move
- 5:11Speaker 3: and get him out on the perimeter and on the
- 5:13Speaker 3: move and cut the field in half and make throws
- 5:16Speaker 3: on off platform or on the move. That's him, like,
- 5:19Speaker 3: that's when I think he Drake May is at his
- 5:21Speaker 3: best in when he feels the most comfortable. So I
- 5:23Speaker 3: think those are all good things that they've done schematically.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But at the same time, and again it's probably too
- 5:30Speaker 3: early to be having these conversations as his basic install
- 5:32Speaker 3: time of year. I haven't necessarily gone out of this
- 5:36Speaker 3: practice and scene and said this is a totally different offense. Right,
- 5:39Speaker 3: it's still Josh mcdaniels's system. They're still running a lot
- 5:42Speaker 3: of the same things that they were running here in
- 5:45Speaker 3: the past. So in that sense, I don't know if
- 5:47Speaker 3: we're really going to see this grand unveiling of this
- 5:52Speaker 3: hugely different offense. But what's been your impressions just of
- 5:56Speaker 3: what they've been doing from that standpoint, Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I mean, it's definitely to wonder how much of it
- 6:01Speaker 1: was going to be. And this is early and they're
- 6:03Speaker 1: in the early stages of install like you said, but
- 6:06Speaker 1: it's it's Josh McDaniels. Like there's some new wrinkle ish
- 6:10Speaker 1: things in there. It's not the Brady offense certainly, but
- 6:14Speaker 1: it's you You wouldn't look at this and be like,
- 6:16Speaker 1: I wonder who's designing this, Like it's a Josh McDaniels
- 6:19Speaker 1: designed offense very clearly, and they'll they'll work wrinkles in
- 6:22Speaker 1: here or there, but you know, like we see them
- 6:25Speaker 1: using a fallback, right, that's textbook Josh McDaniels. A lot
- 6:28Speaker 1: of different packages. It's not, And maybe some of this
- 6:32Speaker 1: is just the install and trying to go through as
- 6:33Speaker 1: much as they can. Maybe it'll translate to the season,
- 6:36Speaker 1: but we've seen this a lot. When McDaniels is the OC,
- 6:39Speaker 1: it's not the same five skill position players out there,
- 6:44Speaker 1: snap after snap after snap. There's a lot of moving
- 6:47Speaker 1: parts and some of that is again you're working different
- 6:49Speaker 1: guys in cause of depth, but going from eleven to
- 6:51Speaker 1: twenty one to twelve, like they're they're given a lot
- 6:54Speaker 1: of looks. Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So the other big picture takeaway offensively, then we can
- 6:58Speaker 3: go over to the defense and then break down into
- 7:00Speaker 3: vidual players from there. The other big picture takeaway I
- 7:02Speaker 3: had offensively was just watching some of the things and
- 7:08Speaker 3: again I want to try to not give too much
- 7:11Speaker 3: away here, but just watching some of the things that
- 7:13Speaker 3: they've been doing with Travon Henderson in these practices feels
- 7:17Speaker 3: exciting to me. They it feels as though they are
- 7:20Speaker 3: going to try to turn Travon Henderson into a featured
- 7:25Speaker 3: scheme touch player. Yeah, and instead of doing like they
- 7:29Speaker 3: tried this in twenty one with John new Smith and
- 7:32Speaker 3: it didn't really work. But Travon Henderson is.
- 7:34Speaker 1: A much different skill skill set, you know, much more explosive,
- 7:38Speaker 1: much faster player, much smaller player, right, and just a
- 7:41Speaker 1: totally different player from John new Smith, a different position,
- 7:44Speaker 1: different everything. So they had some packages that I thought
- 7:48Speaker 1: were unique where you know, they're using Travon Henderson in
- 7:51Speaker 1: some different ways, and that to me is excited.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:56Speaker 3: The other the flip side of that is you don't
- 7:57Speaker 3: want to force feed it, which I thought in because
- 8:00Speaker 3: they gave him the big contract and you know that
- 8:02Speaker 3: he was a big free agent signing for them, that
- 8:04Speaker 3: they kind of force feeded it a little bit at
- 8:06Speaker 3: times with John new Smith where they were just trying
- 8:08Speaker 3: really hard to make John who Smith happen. Right, we
- 8:11Speaker 3: just paid this guy, we just gave him this money.
- 8:13Speaker 3: We're going to try to make him happen. I don't
- 8:17Speaker 3: want to see that with Traveon Henderson necessarily. But what
- 8:20Speaker 3: I'm getting at is is when they drafted him, I
- 8:23Speaker 3: felt this way, and what I've seen the last couple
- 8:25Speaker 3: of weeks, in these first two practices, it kind of
- 8:28Speaker 3: confirms it. This to me is more than just like
- 8:30Speaker 3: a traditional running back, like when you draft a guy
- 8:32Speaker 3: like you know, Genti or Omarion Hampton or something like
- 8:35Speaker 3: you're drafting a traditional running back. The way that I
- 8:38Speaker 3: view how they have shown us at least a little
- 8:41Speaker 3: bit with Traveon Henderson is that he is going to
- 8:44Speaker 3: be used as a true gadget scheme touch player on
- 8:47Speaker 3: a lot of different instances where he is going to
- 8:49Speaker 3: line up in some different places that isn't necessarily the backfield.
- 8:52Speaker 3: He might even line up with another running back on
- 8:55Speaker 3: the field, like they might really use embrace pony packages,
- 8:58Speaker 3: but it's not even like true pony because Henderson's kind
- 9:01Speaker 3: of being used flexed out like as a receiver and
- 9:04Speaker 3: in different from a different alignment. So that is exciting
- 9:08Speaker 3: to me that they see Henderson as someone that can
- 9:11Speaker 3: do that. Then you can obviously build things off of
- 9:14Speaker 3: that where he's a he's a decoy and he's not
- 9:17Speaker 3: necessarily the one that's getting the ball. But you know,
- 9:20Speaker 3: let's say they give him a jet sweep and they
- 9:22Speaker 3: get him out in space, they make a positive play
- 9:24Speaker 3: out of it. Well, now you can show the jets
- 9:26Speaker 3: sweep and you can run action off of it, and
- 9:29Speaker 3: then you're out here and now you're hitting the defense
- 9:31Speaker 3: at a different point of attack. He's he's really impressed
- 9:35Speaker 3: me in these practices with his speed obviously, and that
- 9:38Speaker 3: we kind of knew was going to be a parent
- 9:41Speaker 3: with Travon Henderson, but the usage of him is different,
- 9:45Speaker 3: Like I don't think it's you know, when we try
- 9:48Speaker 3: to compare him to backs, in this role in the past,
- 9:51Speaker 3: you know, the James Whites, the Shane Vereens, the Keavin Fulks.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Like this feels a little bit different to me than
- 9:58Speaker 3: what they did with those guys.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it almost feels kind of Dion Lewis ish, but
- 10:06Speaker 1: he's a better receiver. Like Lewis didn't have that receiving
- 10:09Speaker 1: he wasn't as nearly as politicized receiver as Henderson. Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: they're gonna I don't think he's going to have one role.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And the other thing is we know and it it
- 10:17Speaker 1: changes with some guys, but traditionally Josh McDaniels does not
- 10:23Speaker 1: throw everything out there with a young running back, right,
- 10:26Speaker 1: it is a slow burn. It is a slow build
- 10:29Speaker 1: up with these young running backs. And I think even
- 10:31Speaker 1: if Henderson is still involved early more than the traditional
- 10:35Speaker 1: like young running back would be the It's good. His
- 10:41Speaker 1: role is going to build over time. So whatever' seeing
- 10:44Speaker 1: from him now, my guess is going to be more
- 10:46Speaker 1: built into what he's doing by week one and even
- 10:49Speaker 1: in week one, two, and three. I would think the
- 10:52Speaker 1: role is going to build further from there as the
- 10:54Speaker 1: season goes on.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And it's also some of the things that they're asking
- 10:57Speaker 3: him to do now, like the traditional running back stuff
- 10:59Speaker 3: that you're talking out that they've had slow burns with rookies.
- 11:02Speaker 3: A big part of that is reads like reading your
- 11:04Speaker 3: your run fits and things like that pros right, but
- 11:08Speaker 3: if you some of the things that they have shown
- 11:12Speaker 3: that they've done and in some of these practices are
- 11:15Speaker 3: are a lot more straightforward than that.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Like a jet sweeps.
- 11:17Speaker 3: A jet sweep right, Like if he's going in motion
- 11:20Speaker 3: and he's either taking the ball or he's a decoy, like,
- 11:23Speaker 3: that's not you're not reading anything per se like that.
- 11:26Speaker 3: That's just that's just being an athlete, Like you're just
- 11:28Speaker 3: getting put in a foot race and you're being an athlete.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Like those are the types of things that maybe you
- 11:33Speaker 3: can do a little bit more early on as a
- 11:35Speaker 3: rookie that isn't as mentally taxing as being like a
- 11:40Speaker 3: three down back would be. So that that's, uh, those
- 11:43Speaker 3: things you can do with him right off the bat,
- 11:45Speaker 3: even if he's not mentally all the way caught up
- 11:49Speaker 3: in terms of being able to be a featured back
- 11:51Speaker 3: as like a true tailback out of the backfield.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Let's let's talk a little bit of.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Line I thought you know on this h I it's
- 12:00Speaker 3: non padded practices, and I try not to put too
- 12:04Speaker 3: much stock in line of scrimmage play and non padded practices.
- 12:08Speaker 3: But I spent a little bit of eleven on elevens
- 12:10Speaker 3: today watching Keon White versus Will Campbell, which I thought
- 12:14Speaker 3: has been the matchup pretty consistently and all of these
- 12:17Speaker 3: eleven on elevens that we have seen, and is kind
- 12:21Speaker 3: of the type of guy that in theory might give
- 12:25Speaker 3: Will Campbell some problems. It's a big, long, powerful edge
- 12:30Speaker 3: rusher with a good first step, and you know, there's
- 12:33Speaker 3: a size disadvantage there in terms of length with Will
- 12:36Speaker 3: Campbell and with Keon Whitey did get him clean on
- 12:39Speaker 3: one move, Keon, did you know on a beat his
- 12:41Speaker 3: two hands wipe, you know, kind of just dipped underneath it,
- 12:44Speaker 3: which we've seen a little bit on film at LSU
- 12:46Speaker 3: from Will Campbell. But they're they're they're going back and
- 12:49Speaker 3: forth right like there's some holding of their own there,
- 12:52Speaker 3: and then that left guard. It's just been kind of
- 12:55Speaker 3: a mystery box. I feel like at this point that
- 12:57Speaker 3: Mike Rabel might be toying with us to try to
- 12:59Speaker 3: keep track of all of these different combinations. I think
- 13:02Speaker 3: it was Tyrese Robinson out there for a lot of
- 13:04Speaker 3: practice today, which no disrespect whatsoever to Tyre's Robinson. I
- 13:09Speaker 3: just don't know if that's going to necessarily hold by
- 13:12Speaker 3: the time we get to August. But they're they're trying
- 13:15Speaker 3: out a lot of different people at that left guard
- 13:18Speaker 3: position as of right now, and it really does feel
- 13:22Speaker 3: like that spot is a completely open competition.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it looks wide open, and there's still some guys
- 13:28Speaker 1: that are probably working their way back from injury and
- 13:31Speaker 1: things like that, but these are you know, we talked
- 13:34Speaker 1: about Layton Robinson. We talked about City So who was
- 13:37Speaker 1: here today after not having after not we wasn't here
- 13:42Speaker 1: the last open practice. We saw all right, now I'll
- 13:44Speaker 1: actually be able to get my thoughts straight. Yeah, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: drink some water. We talked about Jared Wilson at that
- 13:49Speaker 1: left guard spot. We didn't talk a lot about Weschweitzer.
- 13:51Speaker 1: We didn't talk a lot about Tyres Robinson. It's it's
- 13:53Speaker 1: wide open. It's anybody's game to win. And my guess is,
- 13:56Speaker 1: behind closed doors, it's probably a different guy every day
- 13:59Speaker 1: or every other day, and maybe Cole Strange had his day,
- 14:02Speaker 1: maybe Leighton Robinson had his day, maybe City So had
- 14:04Speaker 1: his day, but he was on the right side today.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And it's just to kind of set the stage for camp.
- 14:09Speaker 1: They're going to get everybody filled in as much as
- 14:12Speaker 1: they can, and then when the competitive portion begins, when
- 14:15Speaker 1: the pads come on in camp, it's game on.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I am curious to see behind closed doors. You
- 14:19Speaker 3: mentioned that maybe it's rotating, and we don't know obviously
- 14:22Speaker 3: what's happening in those closed practices, but at least in
- 14:27Speaker 3: the two open practices, Leyden Robinson hasn't necessarily been at
- 14:30Speaker 3: the front of the line. And I just wonder how
- 14:33Speaker 3: this staff McDaniel's rabel view Leyden Robinson because I felt
- 14:41Speaker 3: about Leyden Robinson coming off his rookie year similarly to
- 14:44Speaker 3: how I felt about City So coming off his rookie year,
- 14:47Speaker 3: which was that they did some nice things, did some
- 14:49Speaker 3: good things. You know, there's a long way to go,
- 14:52Speaker 3: but you could see a skill set there that maybe
- 14:54Speaker 3: could project into a starter eventually, you know, and build
- 14:57Speaker 3: up to that. We haven't seen Laydon Robinson and be
- 15:00Speaker 3: too heavily involved, especially with like the quote unquote starters,
- 15:04Speaker 3: So it'd be interesting to see if that changes as
- 15:06Speaker 3: we go on here. I was surprised, as I'm sure
- 15:10Speaker 3: a lot of people were that Tyres Robinson got a
- 15:12Speaker 3: crack at it today. I didn't have that on my
- 15:15Speaker 3: bingo card as somebody that would be heavily in the mix.
- 15:18Speaker 3: It is interesting that Cole Strange has been getting some
- 15:20Speaker 3: run at right guard, which I you know, I guess
- 15:23Speaker 3: maybe they're looking at him and saying, well, if he
- 15:25Speaker 3: doesn't win the starting job, you know, can he be
- 15:27Speaker 3: a three position backup? Can he back up both guard
- 15:29Speaker 3: spots and center and make himself valuable that way. I'm
- 15:33Speaker 3: still waiting, and we haven't seen Jared Wilson do much
- 15:37Speaker 3: in these two practices. I don't know what it is
- 15:39Speaker 3: that he's that's holding him back, but we haven't seen
- 15:42Speaker 3: him do much. I'm still waiting to see if Jared
- 15:44Speaker 3: Wilson gets in there and starts making a push, like
- 15:47Speaker 3: I feel like, I know we've talked a lot about
- 15:50Speaker 3: him being a center a long term and that probably
- 15:52Speaker 3: being his most natural position is playing center, but it
- 15:57Speaker 3: still feels to me like that's probably their best five
- 16:00Speaker 3: talent wise on paper, Like the group that has the
- 16:02Speaker 3: highest ceiling would be Campbell Wilson Bradberry on when new
- 16:06Speaker 3: moses like that feels like the most talented five linemen
- 16:11Speaker 3: that they have currently on the roster. But that would
- 16:15Speaker 3: mean putting Jared Wilson at guard and not his natural
- 16:17Speaker 3: position like center.
- 16:19Speaker 1: So the offensive line.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Like I said, I'm not going to look too much
- 16:22Speaker 3: into these non padded practices for the lines of scrimmage
- 16:26Speaker 3: and things like that, but that's some of the things
- 16:29Speaker 3: that we saw out there today. Moving on to their receivers.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I'm trying not to get ahead of myself speed receiver
- 16:37Speaker 3: in May, but Kyle Williams probably had the highlight of
- 16:42Speaker 3: the day for the offense on a go ball from
- 16:44Speaker 3: Josh Dobbs. Caught it over his shoulder. Nice adjustment coming
- 16:47Speaker 3: back to a ball that was like outside, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 3: one of those like contort the body type of catches.
- 16:53Speaker 1: He has flashed. He gets open.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Now, him and Trevon Henderson in this setting should be
- 16:58Speaker 3: flashing there to really explosive, fast, quick twitch, good movers
- 17:03Speaker 3: at skill positions that should flash this time of year.
- 17:06Speaker 3: So I don't want to I'm not starting to print
- 17:09Speaker 3: out the Kyle Williams red jacket just yet or anything
- 17:12Speaker 3: like that. But I did through two practices, I've seen
- 17:15Speaker 3: him get open more than his fair share of times.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Let's put you that way.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Look, I'll say this that sorry, just little breaking news
- 17:27Speaker 1: which I think you were probably aware of. The Patriots
- 17:30Speaker 1: are going to honor David Andrews the retirement press conference
- 17:32Speaker 1: on Monday. Oh yeah, so the team just tweeted that out,
- 17:35Speaker 1: So I guess congratulations to David Andrews on his retirement.
- 17:40Speaker 1: The thing with Kyle Williams to me, we can get
- 17:41Speaker 1: more to that later. We should get more of that later.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:43Speaker 1: The thing with Kyle Williams to me is he is
- 17:47Speaker 1: He's out there on the field a lot. He's involved
- 17:50Speaker 1: a lot, which isn't always the case for rookie this early.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So whatever they're seeing their liking because they're giving him
- 17:59Speaker 1: more opportunities. So it is that massive caveat of non
- 18:05Speaker 1: padded practice and all of that, But clearly he's doing
- 18:08Speaker 1: something that the team wants to see him doing because
- 18:11Speaker 1: they continue to put him out there on the field
- 18:13Speaker 1: with the top unit. Yeah.
- 18:15Speaker 3: You know, I look at Kyle Williams and I just
- 18:20Speaker 3: like what I like about him is that he just
- 18:22Speaker 3: has that ability to get open on the outside and
- 18:25Speaker 3: they just haven't really had that. Now it's different. It's
- 18:27Speaker 3: not he's not a big body receiver and it's five ten.
- 18:31Speaker 3: We're not talking about him getting open on the outside
- 18:34Speaker 3: on on uh you know, high points and back shoulders
- 18:37Speaker 3: and using physicality and things like that. It's it's separation,
- 18:40Speaker 3: and it's really quickness at the line of scrimmage. Like
- 18:43Speaker 3: he beat Battle clean just right off the line of scrimmage.
- 18:45Speaker 3: You know that wasn't you know, like oh, you know
- 18:47Speaker 3: late in the down, you know, third phase of the
- 18:49Speaker 3: route that we're running by somebody, that was just we're
- 18:52Speaker 3: right by him at the line of scrimmage. So that
- 18:54Speaker 3: that's not something that they've had in a while. And
- 18:56Speaker 3: I think that versatility can really be unlocked. And Josh
- 19:00Speaker 3: McDaniel's offense, where this is a guy that's skill set.
- 19:03Speaker 3: You know, we've talked a little bit about Brandon Cooks,
- 19:06Speaker 3: you know, more lends itself to like the Cooks, Dion Branch,
- 19:09Speaker 3: like that type of archetype than like a true outside guy.
- 19:14Speaker 3: And they've tried so hard to find, you know, going
- 19:18Speaker 3: back to like Nikhil Harry and whatever, like to find
- 19:20Speaker 3: that big body outside X and maybe this system just
- 19:24Speaker 3: isn't meant for that, Like unless you're Randy Moss, right,
- 19:26Speaker 3: which is.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Just you show me a system that isn't a fit
- 19:31Speaker 1: for Randy Moss, I'll show you a bad sense, right.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Like, maybe it's just this system though, and we're talking
- 19:35Speaker 3: about mere mortals that aren't Randy Moss. It's not necessarily
- 19:40Speaker 3: meant for that. It's meant more for the separators. It's
- 19:43Speaker 3: more for you know, the four to four speed and
- 19:45Speaker 3: the good separation and the good release and all that
- 19:48Speaker 3: kind of stuff. So I'm caustiously optimistic about what we've
- 19:52Speaker 3: seen from Kyle Williams. The other receiver that I don't
- 19:54Speaker 3: think is necessarily getting a ton of talk out of
- 19:57Speaker 3: these practices, just because he's been around, he's a veteran
- 20:00Speaker 3: that you can see the confidence in having played in
- 20:03Speaker 3: this system.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Is Kendrick Bourne today, Kendrick Born, I just.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Feel like you knows where he's the spots that he's
- 20:09Speaker 3: supposed to be in. He knows the system probably better
- 20:13Speaker 3: than just about anybody that's on he's on the field
- 20:15Speaker 3: with at this point. He should Yeah, absolutely, and uh,
- 20:19Speaker 3: and I feel like it's just confident, it's crisp because
- 20:22Speaker 3: he has been there and done it. So I'm not
- 20:25Speaker 3: ready to write Kendrick Bourne off. I don't think anybody is.
- 20:27Speaker 3: But we've we've talked a lot about him being sort
- 20:30Speaker 3: of on that bubble potentially as like the fifth or
- 20:32Speaker 3: sixth receiver, and could he be the odd man out
- 20:34Speaker 3: to a younger player that's cheaper and that's you know,
- 20:37Speaker 3: a recent draft pick, those types of things. I'm not
- 20:40Speaker 3: ready to go there yet with Kendrick Bourne. I think
- 20:41Speaker 3: he's got too much. He's got just too much experience
- 20:46Speaker 3: and too much savvy within this offense that maybe he's
- 20:49Speaker 3: still going to be around a little bit.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I mean, I think there are people that are utting
- 20:53Speaker 1: him off. And as I said, like, don't people want
- 20:56Speaker 1: to talk about Kashan Boody. People want to talk about
- 20:58Speaker 1: Javon Baker. Who's going to get that last spot. Kendrick
- 21:01Speaker 1: Bourn has to be in the mix. We've seen what
- 21:03Speaker 1: he can do in this offense. I understand that was
- 21:05Speaker 1: three years in a knee injury ago. I get that
- 21:07Speaker 1: it's not a perfect situation, but he just he looks
- 21:10Speaker 1: confident in this offense. He has chemistry with Drake May,
- 21:14Speaker 1: He's he's gonna be a factor here. He's going to
- 21:16Speaker 1: be a factor. He's at the very least, at the
- 21:20Speaker 1: very least, he's gonna make a strong, strong push for
- 21:22Speaker 1: the roster. Maybe they ultimately decide they just want to
- 21:24Speaker 1: get younger. That's probably the biggest thing working against him
- 21:27Speaker 1: is he's I believe it's going to be his age
- 21:29Speaker 1: thirty year right, I think he's twenty nine now, but
- 21:31Speaker 1: heah turnings thirty in the summer's had a major injury,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and right is he in the contract? Yeah, that's thirty
- 21:38Speaker 1: in August. So uh, maybe that's probably the biggest thing
- 21:41Speaker 1: working against him. But he knows this offense, he can
- 21:44Speaker 1: succeed in this offense, and he can succeed with Drake
- 21:46Speaker 1: may So. A couple more things on their receivers.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Jalen Polk still off to the side doing grounds on
- 21:51Speaker 3: air with an offensive assistant. That probably stems I'm we're speculating,
- 21:58Speaker 3: just to be clear, but that probably stems from the
- 22:00Speaker 3: injury at the end of last season.
- 22:02Speaker 1: He's yea all the way.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Back for shoulder, right, Yeah, he's not all the way
- 22:06Speaker 3: back for full team stuff. Yet he's been doing everything else,
- 22:11Speaker 3: just not the full team periods, but he's off to
- 22:14Speaker 3: the side doing routes on air and going pretty hard.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Like I'll give him credit for that, right, Like, I
- 22:19Speaker 3: know it's routes on air, and I'm not like sitting
- 22:21Speaker 3: here telling you that it's breakout season and just.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Kind of walk through the rehab stuff.
- 22:26Speaker 3: He looks like he's taking it on with the right attitude.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But it did stand out to me at least, and
- 22:32Speaker 3: I think we were talking about this during practice that
- 22:34Speaker 3: they as they were going down the depth chart and
- 22:37Speaker 3: getting you know, ones, twos, three circling in there, it
- 22:40Speaker 3: did stand out to me that Javon Baker was near
- 22:44Speaker 3: the back of the line. Now, maybe we shouldn't look
- 22:47Speaker 3: too much into depth charts in may and all that
- 22:49Speaker 3: is fair, But what do you think about You always
- 22:53Speaker 3: tell me to look at like who's playing and when right,
- 22:56Speaker 3: and when Javon Baker is out there and Ben Woolridge
- 22:59Speaker 3: is the quarterback that's thrown him the football, it's just
- 23:02Speaker 3: notable that he's out there with those types.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Well, yeah, Baker's the one guy that's working with all
- 23:06Speaker 1: three quarterbacks. Ye, Like he's all over the place, which
- 23:09Speaker 1: tells me they're really unsure maybe of what they have
- 23:13Speaker 1: in him. Yeah, and by them, I mean the coaching staff.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Elliott Wolf obviously is still here. He drafted him, but
- 23:18Speaker 1: you know, they want to see they want to try
- 23:20Speaker 1: him in different roles, and they want to try them
- 23:21Speaker 1: in different combinations and see what's going to happen. So
- 23:24Speaker 1: I think it's like anything's possible with him. I saw
- 23:26Speaker 1: some people talking about Mike Vrabel walked off the field
- 23:28Speaker 1: with him after practice and the two were chatting, like,
- 23:31Speaker 1: he's made some great catches in this camp. They've come
- 23:34Speaker 1: against guys who probably aren't going to make the team,
- 23:36Speaker 1: and they've come on the field with a lot of
- 23:38Speaker 1: guys who probably aren't going to make the team. So
- 23:41Speaker 1: he's doing He's making some plays. But at a certain point,
- 23:44Speaker 1: what we'll be telling is, all right, does he lose
- 23:47Speaker 1: those Woolridge reps get more with the first team, and
- 23:51Speaker 1: then can he contribute as consistently. Consistency has been a
- 23:54Speaker 1: problem for him. So when you see him kind of
- 23:57Speaker 1: making big plays against those lower units, you're not seeing
- 24:00Speaker 1: him pop as much with the top unit. That's where
- 24:02Speaker 1: you wonder, al right, like is he turning a corner?
- 24:04Speaker 1: Is this just Yeah, he's an NFL caliber player. He's
- 24:07Speaker 1: better than some of these guys that are brought in
- 24:08Speaker 1: for camp, right, But when you have just other guys
- 24:12Speaker 1: on the roster who have a stronger case to make
- 24:14Speaker 1: the team, he's gonna need to do He still needs
- 24:16Speaker 1: to do more well.
- 24:17Speaker 3: The big throw that he caught down the field was
- 24:20Speaker 3: an obvious push off that.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Would have been not a complete OPI.
- 24:24Speaker 3: I mean he just literally tossed the guy to the
- 24:25Speaker 3: ground like that would have been an OPI. But he
- 24:28Speaker 3: does right. He runs a nice inbreaker, like a nice
- 24:30Speaker 3: dig route. You know, at the second level. We've seen
- 24:32Speaker 3: him do it a little bit even last year, especially
- 24:35Speaker 3: in the preseason. Was one of Drake May's like first
- 24:37Speaker 3: like in rhythm, in structure throws.
- 24:39Speaker 1: That he made.
- 24:40Speaker 3: I want to say it was against the Eagles in
- 24:42Speaker 3: the preseason. Backside incut, he runs that route pretty well,
- 24:47Speaker 3: So there's still some juice there. And I watched Javon
- 24:50Speaker 3: Baker and I'm like, this guy's got juice. He's got talent,
- 24:52Speaker 3: Like you can see, he's got explosive movements if he
- 24:56Speaker 3: can just kind of put it all together. But unfortunately
- 24:59Speaker 3: for a lot of guy guys that are drafted where
- 25:01Speaker 3: Javon Baker's drafted and have similar stories. That's always their
- 25:05Speaker 3: story is he just never really was able to put
- 25:08Speaker 3: it all together. And that's just kind of the world
- 25:11Speaker 3: that that Javon Baker is in right now. A couple
- 25:14Speaker 3: more notes on offense for me, and then i'll if
- 25:16Speaker 3: you have any leftovers. Eft and Chisholm still smooth, still
- 25:22Speaker 3: running with the second unit, but still looking pretty smooth
- 25:24Speaker 3: out there, still catching passes. Wrote his number down a
- 25:28Speaker 3: couple of times.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned smoothness.
- 25:31Speaker 3: That those little jump cuts that he does in the
- 25:33Speaker 3: open field, they are kind of fifty like the one
- 25:36Speaker 3: thing that you watch with him on the tabe with
- 25:38Speaker 3: Eastern Washington. He just doesn't have a ton of bursts
- 25:40Speaker 3: with the ball in his hands. Once he gets into
- 25:42Speaker 3: the open field. He's not gonna outrun or run away
- 25:45Speaker 3: from anybody, but he's got that short area of quickness
- 25:48Speaker 3: and he's got some jump cut ability. And my guy
- 25:51Speaker 3: land Larrison just catching all the checkdowns again with backups
- 25:54Speaker 3: against backups, but uh checking, you know, checking those boxes.
- 25:58Speaker 1: This early in camp.
- 26:00Speaker 3: It'll be interesting to see, you know, at what point
- 26:03Speaker 3: do we see maybe Chisholm start to elevate a little
- 26:05Speaker 3: bit on the depth chart, or Laris and start to
- 26:07Speaker 3: elevate a little bit on the depth chart. But those
- 26:10Speaker 3: two guys I thought did the same thing they did
- 26:12Speaker 3: last week, which was when their opportunities presented themselves. They
- 26:16Speaker 3: were noticeable on the field, especially Chisholm. Chism has been
- 26:20Speaker 3: noticeable and both these practices.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yeah, when do those guys move up? I think that's
- 26:24Speaker 1: probably something we get to more in the summer. Once
- 26:27Speaker 1: the pads come on. They're on the right track, they're
- 26:29Speaker 1: on the right trajectory. I just don't think these are
- 26:32Speaker 1: the kind of practices where you're making that kind of move.
- 26:34Speaker 1: But yeah, they're both doing what they need to do
- 26:37Speaker 1: and absolutely doing what they need to do. Anything else
- 26:39Speaker 1: on the offense stand out to you. Morgan Moses was
- 26:44Speaker 1: a little bit more relatively full participant. I don't think
- 26:46Speaker 1: he did one hundred percent of the team reps, yeah
- 26:49Speaker 1: that that top unit was out there, but he did
- 26:51Speaker 1: nine last week. So he's trending in the right direction.
- 26:54Speaker 1: That's good to see. And he had a knee procedure,
- 26:58Speaker 1: knee surgery, right, Yeah, he's working back from something he
- 27:00Speaker 1: knew the and I think he said that last week, Yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 1: talked about Kyle Williams. Jae Bell had a really nice
- 27:05Speaker 1: catch today. Yeah yeah, Jahem Bell made a nice like
- 27:07Speaker 1: diving slide and catch. Craig Woods was all over him
- 27:09Speaker 1: like it was good coverage. Dobbs underthrow it a little bit.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I think he'd probably try to lead Bell away from
- 27:14Speaker 1: coverage and it just turned in and one underthrow. But
- 27:16Speaker 1: Bell adjusted made a play on the football like Hooper
- 27:21Speaker 1: was out here today. So we got to see a
- 27:22Speaker 1: little more CJ. Deprie, a little more Jahem Bell, Jack
- 27:25Speaker 1: Westover looking like he's still squarely in the mix for
- 27:28Speaker 1: a roster spot, So got to see a little more
- 27:30Speaker 1: of those guys today. I would say Jaheen Bell did
- 27:32Speaker 1: a good job of his opportunity.
- 27:34Speaker 3: With his opportunity, Drake may is starving, and not that
- 27:36Speaker 3: Hunter Henry can't do this, but he he loves to
- 27:39Speaker 3: throw the seam.
- 27:40Speaker 1: He loves two routes. He loves the seam, and he
- 27:42Speaker 1: loves a.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Nice sale route right a corner flag, you know, into
- 27:46Speaker 3: the sideline with the outside receiver clearing it out like
- 27:49Speaker 3: he loves that. Those two routes and Jahem Bell, even
- 27:52Speaker 3: though he's not necessarily that traditional inline wide tight end.
- 27:56Speaker 3: There's a lot of evidence on his college tape of
- 27:58Speaker 3: him stretching the seam and being able to make those
- 28:00Speaker 3: types of plays down the field as.
- 28:02Speaker 1: He does it more from the slot than like traditionally.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Right, and so he can do that, you know, he
- 28:07Speaker 3: can do that sort of thing, and just when you
- 28:09Speaker 3: watch these practices that that's really and if I had
- 28:12Speaker 3: to say, like my most positive I guess outlook about
- 28:17Speaker 3: this offense with Josh McDaniels is that McDaniels is very
- 28:20Speaker 3: good at accentuating the middle of the field and Drake
- 28:23Speaker 3: May is very good at accessing the middle of the field.
- 28:25Speaker 3: So those two guys together should marry up pretty well
- 28:28Speaker 3: in that sense. I always see Drake May when he's
- 28:31Speaker 3: going through progressions and things like that, he wants to
- 28:35Speaker 3: throw the ball through the middle of the field.
- 28:36Speaker 1: He wants the seed the tight end, seat wants Bryson Desbet, Yeah,
- 28:39Speaker 1: he wants that tight end. Team.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Whoever can do that the best out of this group
- 28:44Speaker 3: behind Henry and Hooper are obviously going to be here.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I think has a really good chance to make this team.
- 28:48Speaker 3: And as we move forward, we were talking about this
- 28:51Speaker 3: a little bit of practice. And I know this is
- 28:52Speaker 3: getting a little head of ourselves and away from the
- 28:54Speaker 3: twenty twenty five season, but we are a draft show.
- 28:58Speaker 1: We are an off season show. That's our wheelhouse.
- 29:01Speaker 3: And as we move forward here, evaluating tight ends, trying
- 29:05Speaker 3: to target tight ends in the draft that can stretch
- 29:08Speaker 3: the seam and have that vertical juice to their game,
- 29:11Speaker 3: I think is going to be something that we're going
- 29:13Speaker 3: to talk a lot about in the twenty twenty six offseason.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Like that seems like a skill set that they could
- 29:19Speaker 3: really unlock with Drake May with the right guy, and
- 29:23Speaker 3: we'll see if they can find that guy. Personnel wise.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Moving over to the defense, there's you know again, you know,
- 29:30Speaker 3: tackling anybody to the ground. There's a ton of physicality
- 29:33Speaker 3: for the defense out there. But the one consistent theme
- 29:38Speaker 3: upfront from the defense has been that four man defensive line,
- 29:41Speaker 3: Like that's clearly the unit that they want to roll
- 29:44Speaker 3: out Week one against the Vegas Raiders of Landry Barmore,
- 29:49Speaker 3: Williams White like, those four guys are have been consistently
- 29:54Speaker 3: working together in all these practices. Every once in a while,
- 29:57Speaker 3: Chase On will rotate in for Land and get some
- 30:00Speaker 3: run at that right or left, I guess the spot.
- 30:05Speaker 1: They've both been on the field together at times too.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Like that that unit though, those four guys together with
- 30:10Speaker 3: Chase on you know, also kind of being that that
- 30:13Speaker 3: fifth and maybe Tonga over the nose in some of
- 30:17Speaker 3: their early down based office.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Just huge man, he's so big just seeing him out
- 30:21Speaker 1: that you see him every time, you can't miss him.
- 30:24Speaker 3: That that group has been on the field a lot
- 30:26Speaker 3: and pretty consistently throughout these practices. So the two takeaways
- 30:31Speaker 3: I have from that are one, it's pretty clear, and
- 30:34Speaker 3: I I will like, I haven't been the biggest key
- 30:37Speaker 3: On White guy. I've kind of felt like he's a
- 30:40Speaker 3: little bit of a tweener. Maybe Keon White's like not
- 30:45Speaker 3: that he's a bad player by any means in the
- 30:47Speaker 3: old system, and he wasn't a bad player, like he
- 30:49Speaker 3: was probably one of their better defensive players last year.
- 30:52Speaker 1: At least. It's certainly at the beginning of the year
- 30:55Speaker 1: it looks.
- 30:56Speaker 3: More natural for him in this system, already playing with
- 30:59Speaker 3: his hand in the dirt, and.
- 31:00Speaker 1: He said that he said he wants to play more
- 31:03Speaker 1: like he said that his first year his biggest concern was,
- 31:06Speaker 1: like he didn't want to blow an assignment. Yeah, more
- 31:08Speaker 1: than any like more than more than being worried about
- 31:11Speaker 1: making a play. He didn't want to blow an assignment.
- 31:13Speaker 1: So this his assignment in his defense is to make plays.
- 31:16Speaker 1: This is this looks like a really good fit for him.
- 31:20Speaker 1: And he's going to play more with his hand in
- 31:21Speaker 1: the dirt, and he's going to play close. He's not
- 31:24Speaker 1: going to be all the way outside the tackle. Is
- 31:26Speaker 1: probably going to be their head up or right outside
- 31:28Speaker 1: the tackle, like in a five technique, And he just
- 31:31Speaker 1: seems like he knows, you know, he's being allowed to
- 31:35Speaker 1: get up the field.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Obviously, there's a lot of pass rush reps in a
- 31:39Speaker 3: camp like this, where Drabels called it a passing camp
- 31:41Speaker 3: multiple times, so you're going to see a lot of
- 31:43Speaker 3: pass rush stuff. But I just I like what I've
- 31:46Speaker 3: seen so far out of him. I think this is
- 31:48Speaker 3: a good fit for him in this scheme. But those
- 31:51Speaker 3: four guys have been pretty consistent on that defensive line.
- 31:55Speaker 1: Yeah they have. I thought Joshua Farmer had a really
- 31:58Speaker 1: good day to day from that group up front, broke
- 32:01Speaker 1: up a pass line of scrimmage, had another screenplay he
- 32:03Speaker 1: almost grew up blew up. Even Anthony Jennings, who we
- 32:07Speaker 1: talked about last week. I think I was going to
- 32:09Speaker 1: bring him up next. Yeah, he had a really good day.
- 32:11Speaker 1: A couple of would be sacks. Again, it's non pads.
- 32:13Speaker 1: You put as much sock into that as you want to.
- 32:15Speaker 1: But they they are they are deep up front, especially
- 32:19Speaker 1: when it comes to the rushers. Uh, when it comes
- 32:21Speaker 1: to guys on the edge, We've talked about them, maybe
- 32:23Speaker 1: need another tackle, but they they have good depth on
- 32:25Speaker 1: the edge, and that group got after it today. I'm
- 32:27Speaker 1: interested to see.
- 32:28Speaker 3: You know, I was going to bring up with Jennings
- 32:29Speaker 3: because I thought he flashed a couple of times today too.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Definitely had one that would have been a sack, one.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Like a clean right away sack, and another that And
- 32:37Speaker 1: there were a few times too where they they collectively
- 32:41Speaker 1: collapsed the pocket. It would have been a sack. But
- 32:43Speaker 1: you don't look at that one and say this player
- 32:45Speaker 1: stood out or that player stood out. It was just
- 32:46Speaker 1: all right the pocket. They team meeting at the quarterback
- 32:49Speaker 1: ye phrase.
- 32:51Speaker 3: So Jennings, it's interesting to me because he's he's clearly
- 32:55Speaker 3: Landry and and Chase on are clearly at the top
- 32:58Speaker 3: right now. Of that edge rusher depth chart, and you know,
- 33:01Speaker 3: wherever you want to put keon White, you can put
- 33:03Speaker 3: keon White in that conversation. But those three guys are
- 33:06Speaker 3: clearly ahead of Jennings right now. What's Jennings's outlook because
- 33:12Speaker 3: I'm still trying to figure out exactly and he made
- 33:14Speaker 3: some good plays today and maybe it can translate like
- 33:17Speaker 3: I'm still trying to figure out exactly where Anthony Jennings
- 33:21Speaker 3: fits into this puzzle, because he's not really the skill
- 33:25Speaker 3: set is a edge setting outside linebacker, stand up on
- 33:29Speaker 3: your feet, set the edge of the defense against the run,
- 33:32Speaker 3: play on first down, like that's the skill set, and
- 33:35Speaker 3: that's just not really.
- 33:37Speaker 1: What they're going for now.
- 33:39Speaker 3: You know, they're really going more for up the field guys,
- 33:42Speaker 3: playmaking type of guys. And I'm just wondering where Jennings
- 33:47Speaker 3: fits into this whole thing because he's still here, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 3: him and Jelanicava are both still here, but both of them,
- 33:52Speaker 3: especially Jennings, because we've just seen him participate a little
- 33:55Speaker 3: bit more feel like an odd fit or just don't
- 33:57Speaker 3: feel exactly like what the player they've targeted. You know,
- 34:00Speaker 3: Landry Chase on Swinson and the draft have a very
- 34:04Speaker 3: clear body type and skill set that they are really
- 34:08Speaker 3: redundant to one another in that type of way.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I thing. I think there's something to be said for
- 34:12Speaker 1: you don't want necessarily a bunch of guys who are
- 34:14Speaker 1: all redundant to one another. You want your starter, similar backups.
- 34:18Speaker 1: You have to change much schematically, but you have a
- 34:21Speaker 1: bunch of pass rushers. You still want a guy that
- 34:22Speaker 1: can come in there and stop the run. Yeah, you
- 34:24Speaker 1: still want a guy who can put in there on
- 34:26Speaker 1: early downs or in short yarded situations or late in
- 34:28Speaker 1: a game. Right, if you just build a team of
- 34:30Speaker 1: primary pass rushers, you're gonna get with the Jaguars in
- 34:33Speaker 1: London last year, They're gonna run the ball seventeen times
- 34:35Speaker 1: in a row knowing you can't stop it. Right. So
- 34:37Speaker 1: I think that's definitely Jennings's role. We'll see what happens
- 34:40Speaker 1: with Tavai. He was limited today, but you need guys
- 34:43Speaker 1: who can stop the run. You need guys who can
- 34:45Speaker 1: stop the run. He can do it, and I think
- 34:47Speaker 1: he gets underrated as pass rusher. He's not Miles Garrett,
- 34:50Speaker 1: but he can. He's not a sack guy. What he
- 34:55Speaker 1: did really well at Alabama, and I don't think he
- 34:56Speaker 1: was asked to do this enough here, Like he can.
- 35:00Speaker 1: He has a knack for getting in passing wings and
- 35:02Speaker 1: pushing the pocket back and even if he's not shedding,
- 35:04Speaker 1: his blocker doing a good job to get his arms
- 35:07Speaker 1: up and make sure the ball can't get thrown by
- 35:09Speaker 1: his ear. So I think he's just kind of a
- 35:12Speaker 1: utility guy. Yeah, he can play. You know, you can
- 35:14Speaker 1: move him around. He can play a different couple different spots.
- 35:17Speaker 1: He can play in different situations to get back up
- 35:19Speaker 1: to have he's high level backup, I think, get a
- 35:21Speaker 1: bunch of different spots.
- 35:22Speaker 3: So they've played a little bit, you know, they've played
- 35:25Speaker 3: mostly a four down front, and they played a little
- 35:28Speaker 3: bit of over where they have four down guys and
- 35:32Speaker 3: then one guy up on his feet at the end
- 35:35Speaker 3: of the line of scrimmage. And obviously they're going to
- 35:37Speaker 3: mix and match what fronts they use, and it's gonna
- 35:39Speaker 3: be game plan and situation oriented and all that good stuff.
- 35:43Speaker 3: But I could see that being a spot for him
- 35:45Speaker 3: on the strong side, that could be a fit. I
- 35:48Speaker 3: just don't know if I necessarily see him as like
- 35:50Speaker 3: a hand in the dirt type of player. And for
- 35:53Speaker 3: the most part they've been four down with four guys
- 35:55Speaker 3: with the hand in the dirt on the first level
- 35:57Speaker 3: of the defense. And so where does Jennings fit into
- 35:59Speaker 3: all that? Moving back, I agree with you on Farmer though,
- 36:03Speaker 3: that was a good, good shout. I know he had
- 36:05Speaker 3: a couple of flashes today or it was a little
- 36:08Speaker 3: bit more noticing.
- 36:08Speaker 1: A good day for the rookies as a whole. Good Yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 1: he's got an interesting bill.
- 36:12Speaker 3: He's got those long arms, right, you can see that,
- 36:14Speaker 3: and uh, but he's compact, like it's not like he's
- 36:17Speaker 3: just like he's not necessarily huge in relatively speaking, of course,
- 36:22Speaker 3: but he's got long arms and he's got like this
- 36:24Speaker 3: compact frame. I'm trying to think of like a body
- 36:27Speaker 3: type comparison, and I don't really have a good one, like.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Kind of built like Barmore, isn't he.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I think there are some overlap there, Like if you
- 36:34Speaker 3: look on like mock Draftable and stuff like that, there's
- 36:36Speaker 3: some overlap there with Barmore.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I could see that.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I think Barmore is a little bit bigger, you know,
- 36:41Speaker 3: but maybe that's just because he's older and Barmore like
- 36:45Speaker 3: three ten, three twenty isn't farmer like three ten.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I don't know if he's that big farmer at the combine.
- 36:51Speaker 1: If Wikipedia has him at three twelve, yeah, I don't
- 36:54Speaker 1: know what he was at the combine. Six yeah, three
- 36:57Speaker 1: h five. We're talking.
- 36:58Speaker 3: That's a big difference. We were going up to three fifteen,
- 37:00Speaker 3: three twenty Barmore three ten. I think Barmore plays closer
- 37:04Speaker 3: to three twenty.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Three fifteen Yeah, okay, so maybe maybe some Barmore there,
- 37:10Speaker 1: But I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued by him. The other guy
- 37:14Speaker 1: that I thought was really noticeable today from the second
- 37:17Speaker 1: level was Robert Splaine. Like Robert Splaine guy flies around.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Now I'll say this, I do not know if Robert
- 37:23Speaker 3: Splaine was cheating the play. A couple of times it
- 37:25Speaker 3: looked like Robert s. Bulaine knew the play before it
- 37:28Speaker 3: was called in the huddle. So there's a chance that
- 37:31Speaker 3: you know, they've been practicing against one another for four
- 37:33Speaker 3: or five days now, like maybe he's starting to pick
- 37:36Speaker 3: up on some of the basic install of Josh mcdaniels's offense,
- 37:40Speaker 3: and he had he was really early to the ball
- 37:42Speaker 3: a couple of times where I was like, that was
- 37:44Speaker 3: maybe a little bit too early, like are we are
- 37:46Speaker 3: we going off cards here? Like what's the deal?
- 37:48Speaker 5: Right?
- 37:49Speaker 1: You know? So I don't want to put too much
- 37:51Speaker 1: stock into those specific plays.
- 37:53Speaker 3: But he's definitely got good play recognition, and he plays
- 37:58Speaker 3: even faster than maybe like his athletic ability would suggest
- 38:01Speaker 3: because of that, because he's he seems like he's a
- 38:03Speaker 3: half a step ahead air of a lot of these
- 38:05Speaker 3: plays at a lot of times, like they kept on
- 38:08Speaker 3: trying to get the ball outside, whether it was like
- 38:10Speaker 3: swing passes to Trevon Henderson or whatever, and Splaine was
- 38:13Speaker 3: on the spot immediately on a couple of those I
- 38:16Speaker 3: had not. I jotted him down two or three times
- 38:19Speaker 3: with you know, tackles that were right on the on
- 38:22Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. So today I thought I saw
- 38:26Speaker 3: the full Bobby Spallaine, you know, I saw a little
- 38:29Speaker 3: bit more out of him today.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Yeah, he And it's that's kind of what you look
- 38:33Speaker 1: for in these practices. Like obviously defensive players can't really
- 38:36Speaker 1: make plays because they can't hit, But do you get
- 38:38Speaker 1: to the right place at the right time. There were
- 38:39Speaker 1: two guys we talked about today being in the right
- 38:42Speaker 1: place at the right time Splayne was one of them,
- 38:43Speaker 1: and then Craig Woodson was the up.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Quite he he almost had he almost had an interception.
- 38:48Speaker 1: He'd picked it off over the middle.
- 38:49Speaker 6: Yep.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Yeah, he was a high throw to see j Dupree
- 38:52Speaker 1: from Josh Dobbs and uh, he's half an inch taller,
- 38:55Speaker 1: he probably picks it off. Yeah.
- 38:56Speaker 3: So he he's been in the right spots. I think
- 39:00Speaker 3: he's great, not great so strong word. I think he's
- 39:03Speaker 3: His strength is probably playing as more of like a
- 39:06Speaker 3: zone a true zone defender. I know he can play
- 39:08Speaker 3: man to man on tight ends, and he's done that
- 39:10Speaker 3: a little bit at Cal. I didn't think it was
- 39:14Speaker 3: bad coverage by any means on the throw he gave
- 39:16Speaker 3: up to Jahem Bell, like that was more of a
- 39:18Speaker 3: good catch through some contact and like truly bad coverage.
- 39:22Speaker 3: But the thing that hurts Woodson I would say, in
- 39:24Speaker 3: terms of his man to man ability against tight ends,
- 39:27Speaker 3: he's got a little bit of a shorter upper body
- 39:29Speaker 3: and shorter arms, so it's harder for him to kind
- 39:32Speaker 3: of get into the catch point and make plays on
- 39:34Speaker 3: the football when he is targeted. So I don't necessarily
- 39:38Speaker 3: look at that and say that that's like the strength
- 39:41Speaker 3: of his game is going to be tight end stopper,
- 39:43Speaker 3: like they're going to put him up against past catching
- 39:46Speaker 3: tight ends. Where I think his strength of his game
- 39:48Speaker 3: is is playing in the middle of the field, whether
- 39:51Speaker 3: it's rotating back into that free safety role or rotating
- 39:54Speaker 3: into the shorter zone distribution as like a robber or
- 39:57Speaker 3: a deep hook or something like that, over the middle
- 39:59Speaker 3: of the both those spots I feel like center field,
- 40:03Speaker 3: split safety, and then underneath zone. He looks really comfortable
- 40:08Speaker 3: in all those And you mentioned the one over the
- 40:10Speaker 3: middle of the field he almost picked off. Dobbs saw
- 40:13Speaker 3: the window, Flash was gonna throw it there, and and
- 40:16Speaker 3: Woodson was just in in the window like he just
- 40:18Speaker 3: read it well and sat right there in the window
- 40:21Speaker 3: and forced Dobbs to airmail It's otherwise he's gonna pick
- 40:25Speaker 3: it off. So he's got a good knack to his game.
- 40:28Speaker 3: He's got some good instincts. I was not overly high,
- 40:32Speaker 3: Like to be totally honest, I was not overly high
- 40:34Speaker 3: on that pick. I thought it was the one time
- 40:37Speaker 3: where it felt like they may be reached a little bit.
- 40:39Speaker 3: There are some other safeties that I preferred, you know,
- 40:41Speaker 3: Billy Bowman, going back to the draft, and they might
- 40:44Speaker 3: have been right about Kriik woods now super early, Like
- 40:47Speaker 3: you're right, I'm not ready to crown him yet, but
- 40:50Speaker 3: I can watching him through two issues. You see the vision,
- 40:53Speaker 3: you see the skill set, you see the the talent
- 40:55Speaker 3: there from the player. Maybe this might have been they
- 40:58Speaker 3: might have been done a good out on this guy,
- 41:01Speaker 3: Like I'm ready to give him some tiny teeny bit
- 41:03Speaker 3: of credit because not because I'm not ready to give
- 41:06Speaker 3: him any credit for anything, but just because it's early.
- 41:08Speaker 3: But I see what they went for there with Craig Woodson.
- 41:12Speaker 3: The other thing that stood out in the secondary, and
- 41:14Speaker 3: this has been pretty consistent based off some of the
- 41:17Speaker 3: other reporting that's been done, is Alex Austin playing a
- 41:20Speaker 3: little bit more inside in the slot now today Carlton
- 41:23Speaker 3: Davis wasn't at practice, a veteran voluntary OTA you know,
- 41:27Speaker 3: wasn't at practice, So maybe that just gave him the
- 41:30Speaker 3: opportunity to go in this direction. But they've talked about variables,
- 41:36Speaker 3: introducting press conference other press conferences about the big slot
- 41:39Speaker 3: and having a bigger body type in there than a
- 41:43Speaker 3: Marcus Jones or Jonathan Jones who's no longer here. Maybe
- 41:46Speaker 3: that speaks to that. So Alex Austin certainly fits the
- 41:49Speaker 3: bill as somebody that has a little bit more size
- 41:51Speaker 3: that can still play man coverage inside.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Yeah, And I thought it was notable that when they
- 41:56Speaker 1: went with that look, Alex Austin stayed inside and we
- 41:59Speaker 1: saw Mark Jones working on the boundary, So they want
- 42:01Speaker 1: to get him some reps right there. I kind of
- 42:03Speaker 1: interpreted that as and maybe both ways. Maybe they want
- 42:06Speaker 1: to get Marcus Jones reps on the outside, they want
- 42:07Speaker 1: to get Alex Austin reps on the inside. So even
- 42:10Speaker 1: if Marcus Jones is going to stick around his primary
- 42:12Speaker 1: slot corner, they don't have a clear backup. Yeah. So
- 42:14Speaker 1: if Alex Austin can be your third boundary corner and
- 42:16Speaker 1: your select your second slot corner, that's great durability. That
- 42:19Speaker 1: probably saves your roster spot somewhere else. So good to
- 42:23Speaker 1: see that.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Yeah, So that was that. What do we get from
- 42:25Speaker 3: the Kickers today?
- 42:26Speaker 1: Alex movie?
- 42:27Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 42:27Speaker 1: So, uh, Borgallis missed one left. He missed pretty wide
- 42:33Speaker 1: left from about forty. It was a little over forty.
- 42:36Speaker 1: It's tough to see they're going the long way. John
- 42:38Speaker 1: Parker Romo hit all four of us kicks. One of
- 42:40Speaker 1: them was really close. Mike Greheese actually confirmed with the
- 42:43Speaker 1: member of the staff after practice that it was in
- 42:45Speaker 1: fact good because we weren't entirely sure. So I love
- 42:49Speaker 1: that that that's the hard hitting report in right, John
- 42:51Speaker 1: park Romo four for four, Boorgallas three or four with
- 42:53Speaker 1: a miss wide left.
- 42:55Speaker 3: So I didn't track to make some misses quite like
- 42:59Speaker 3: you did. That's why I teach you have for that.
- 43:02Speaker 1: I haven't.
- 43:03Speaker 3: There has been some inconsistent hits, right, Like, am I
- 43:06Speaker 3: wrong about that? Like some of these that may maybe
- 43:08Speaker 3: are technically good haven't necessarily come clean.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Off of either guy's foot.
- 43:13Speaker 3: There's been some hooks, there's been some you know, there's
- 43:15Speaker 3: been some just mishits.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I would say. I would say Parker Romo has more.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Borgalis definitely had the one in their first practice that
- 43:24Speaker 1: he didn't get square but still hit it straight. Yeah,
- 43:27Speaker 1: the one today. I don't know what went wrong there,
- 43:28Speaker 1: but it was a pretty bad ballflight. Yeah, so we'll see.
- 43:33Speaker 1: I still think it's Borgoalis. But no punting John Parker Romeo.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Today they actually did do a couple of punts. Oh okay,
- 43:39Speaker 1: they did three punts at the very beginning of practice.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I don't know if this was like truly live reps
- 43:44Speaker 1: or a walkthrough, so I didn't put out the stopwatch times,
- 43:47Speaker 1: especially because one of them he kicked relatively short and
- 43:50Speaker 1: looked like he was on purpose set up a return.
- 43:52Speaker 1: That one was three point seventy five seconds. The other
- 43:54Speaker 1: two half times I had five point oh six and
- 43:57Speaker 1: then five point five to one which bounced out of
- 43:59Speaker 1: bounds at the six yard line. And our first one
- 44:01Speaker 1: was a beautiful punt, wown beautiful punt. That that really
- 44:06Speaker 1: that's your highlight of practice? Was great punt? Why can't
- 44:10Speaker 1: we give them credits? Five to five hang time from
- 44:12Speaker 1: Bryce Parring? Is that not?
- 44:14Speaker 3: Is that your your highlight of the practice. I'm asking
- 44:16Speaker 3: you seriously, it's.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Probably either the Kyle Williams getting off the line on
- 44:21Speaker 1: the deep ball he caught against Miles Battle, Yeah, or
- 44:23Speaker 1: the Jahem bellcash those are probably the highlights. That's fair.
- 44:25Speaker 1: I think those are two good highlights.
- 44:27Speaker 3: I would say Kyle Williams was probably the highlight of
- 44:29Speaker 3: practice there as well. So that that's your practice report
- 44:32Speaker 3: for you. There's one other thing I want to get
- 44:34Speaker 3: to that is obviously something that I have to be
- 44:38Speaker 3: a little bit sensitive about. But it started out the
- 44:40Speaker 3: press conference right away. It's a story. We can't really
- 44:43Speaker 3: fully ignore it. And that was obviously the video of
- 44:47Speaker 3: Stefan Diggs from over the weekend that's gone a little
- 44:50Speaker 3: bit viral. I'll just say what Rabel said and then
- 44:53Speaker 3: you know, if you want to give it, take you
- 44:55Speaker 3: and give a take. But he just said that we
- 44:57Speaker 3: got to make good decisions, and I think that's a
- 44:59Speaker 3: good that's a good line, right like that. That's really
- 45:01Speaker 3: what it is, right It's whether it's in the facility
- 45:04Speaker 3: or it's outside the facility. You just want to see
- 45:07Speaker 3: the players making good decisions. Yeah, oh, in any way,
- 45:10Speaker 3: and he brought it back to practice and said, you know,
- 45:12Speaker 3: I hope that we make good decisions out here at
- 45:15Speaker 3: practice in terms of football, you know, the actual football.
- 45:17Speaker 3: And then when we're away from this facility, I hope
- 45:21Speaker 3: we make good decisions as well. How did what did
- 45:23Speaker 3: you take it? Right off the jump?
- 45:24Speaker 1: But I give her credit carry Kregan right off the bat,
- 45:27Speaker 1: just first question about some right thing. I mean, I
- 45:29Speaker 1: thought that obviously Vrabel had the right answer. We'll say,
- 45:33Speaker 1: you know, I don't know how much more information is
- 45:35Speaker 1: going to come out. Yeah, Like, I know, people debate
- 45:39Speaker 1: what that is in the video that he has, but
- 45:43Speaker 1: it's you can't confirm it, right, So what I I don't.
- 45:47Speaker 1: I'd be surprised if this is something that becomes maybe
- 45:49Speaker 1: gets some internal discipline, but I'd be surprised if this
- 45:52Speaker 1: becomes like a much bigger thing than it is at
- 45:54Speaker 1: this point now, all publicly, all we're going off of
- 45:58Speaker 1: in a different but similar thing is him posting videos
- 46:01Speaker 1: of his workouts, which you never know, right, Like you
- 46:05Speaker 1: know that that happens. Every athlete nowadays has their own
- 46:08Speaker 1: social media channels and they're posting videos of his workouts.
- 46:11Speaker 1: But if we're just basing off the information that we
- 46:14Speaker 1: have of him posting those videos, he looks like he's
- 46:17Speaker 1: really attacking this rehab and this return to play, and
- 46:21Speaker 1: if his head is in the right place when it
- 46:22Speaker 1: comes to football, then some of this other stuff is
- 46:25Speaker 1: just kind of what you get with the big time receivers,
- 46:28Speaker 1: with the highly paid wide outs. Like we know that, right,
- 46:31Speaker 1: it goes back generations that these guys are are who
- 46:36Speaker 1: they are from a personality standpoint, but from a football standpoint,
- 46:41Speaker 1: we haven't seen him out there yet. For these practices,
- 46:43Speaker 1: so we haven't seen it with our own eyes, but
- 46:45Speaker 1: we've posted on Patriots dot Com that he's has checked
- 46:47Speaker 1: in and has been in some of these practices. There
- 46:50Speaker 1: are pictures of him.
- 46:51Speaker 3: I think it was over the weekend, right that we
- 46:53Speaker 3: posted of him at one of these practices. One of
- 46:55Speaker 3: these OTAs might have been last Fridays practice that he
- 46:59Speaker 3: was at. So he's been kicked around. He's been here,
- 47:03Speaker 3: been out a practice at least once. From OTAs. He
- 47:06Speaker 3: looks fantastic in some of these workout videos that he's posting.
- 47:10Speaker 3: So I guess if I had to give a take
- 47:12Speaker 3: on it, like I just I just don't really just
- 47:15Speaker 3: be smart, but like I don't really care, right, Like,
- 47:17Speaker 3: if he comes in here and he's defon Diggs and
- 47:19Speaker 3: he plays football and he's ready to go when he's
- 47:23Speaker 3: cleared medically and all that kind of stuff, then you
- 47:25Speaker 3: know what he does in his free time away from
- 47:27Speaker 3: the facility is up to him.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Who he dates, all that kind of stuff. Yeah, like perform, Right,
- 47:32Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys that have fun off the
- 47:34Speaker 1: field and do what they want to do off the field.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And if you show up and you play, you generally
- 47:38Speaker 1: get a little bit more freedom with that stuff. If
- 47:40Speaker 1: it starts impacting you on the field, that's another conversation.
- 47:42Speaker 1: We'll have that conversation if it does.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, all right, So that that's practice. That's practice.
- 47:47Speaker 3: Wrap up to start off the show, we'll open the
- 47:49Speaker 3: phone lines here and just to second the emails as well.
- 47:52Speaker 3: If you want to email in at podcasts at Patriots
- 47:56Speaker 3: dot com, we'll.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Read your emails before we open up the phone lines.
- 48:00Speaker 1: The bad news is football isn't back yet. The good
- 48:02Speaker 1: news summer is upon us and you can stock up
- 48:05Speaker 1: on everything you need to kick back and relax with

- 48:26Speaker 1: your summer with Bob's Discount Furniture, the official furniture store
- 48:29Speaker 1: of the New England Patriots.
- 48:31Speaker 3: A little a little long on the Bob's read, but
- 48:35Speaker 3: the best one like there wasn't any huge words or like,
- 48:38Speaker 3: you know, bad alliteration, So that was a clean Bob's read.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Sometimes we get ones that throw the sales staff under
- 48:44Speaker 1: the boss that you go, good job, Evy. Sometimes there's
- 48:46Speaker 1: ones that are a little clunky, bit the hand that feeds.
- 48:49Speaker 1: This one was clean though, So good job Bob's good job.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Everybody did the sales guys ninety five break great reads. Yeah, yeah, I'm.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Sure that they loved that part of the show. What
- 48:59Speaker 3: you think, Alex, Alex behind the glass? I have two Alex's,
- 49:03Speaker 3: which is like a little confusing to me.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Honestly, let's not forget we already had this debate one
- 49:07Speaker 1: of the shows where you weren't here. You were on
- 49:09Speaker 1: the show, but I was hosting, and I did the read,
- 49:11Speaker 1: and what we figured, you're better at answering the phones
- 49:14Speaker 1: and I'm better at doing the reads. Yeah, yeah, exactly,
- 49:16Speaker 1: that's one hundred percent true. But you're you're you're the
- 49:18Speaker 1: radio guy amongst the two of us, so that that
- 49:21Speaker 1: makes sense that you would be better at doing the reads,
- 49:23Speaker 1: I would hope.
- 49:24Speaker 3: So you also do like a lot more reads, like
- 49:26Speaker 3: I was on the air with you the other night. Yeah,
- 49:27Speaker 3: and you guys like have the whole book and everything.
- 49:30Speaker 1: You gotta keep track of the read three an hour
- 49:32Speaker 1: during the week. Yeah, well it has to be one take.
- 49:35Speaker 1: It's live. It's live actually, uh. The the producer I
- 49:39Speaker 1: have on Sunday mornings confer Breeze. Some of the other
- 49:41Speaker 1: producers do too. I think George did it uh the
- 49:43Speaker 1: other night. It's like, if we have they'll they'll record it.
- 49:46Speaker 1: So if it lines up, they'll help you out. So
- 49:48Speaker 1: but you got to do it live at least once.
- 49:50Speaker 3: I like the ones where you guys are in a
- 49:52Speaker 3: commercial and then you do a live read and then
- 49:54Speaker 3: you go back to commercial because I never I always
- 49:57Speaker 3: when I was younger and didn't you know, know how
- 49:59Speaker 3: the sausage is made. I always wondered if those were
- 50:01Speaker 3: truly live or if those were just like recorded.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. Not to peel the
- 50:08Speaker 1: curtain back too far, but that's what that's what keeps everybody.
- 50:12Speaker 1: You gotta be on your toes, you know, That's what
- 50:14Speaker 1: that that's the big money. If you want the on
- 50:16Speaker 1: air guys to read the ad instead of just having
- 50:18Speaker 1: the voiceover guy do it, because it's the on air voice.
- 50:19Speaker 1: So people more likely stay tuned in right right, because
- 50:22Speaker 1: they're used to that voice. That's that's how you make
- 50:24Speaker 1: the big books.
- 50:24Speaker 3: There you go there that that's a peak behind the curtain,
- 50:27Speaker 3: A little peak behind the curtain, is right. All right,
- 50:28Speaker 3: Let's get to the phones. Lorenzo is in Virginia. What's up, Lorenzo. Lorenzo,
- 50:35Speaker 3: you there?
- 50:38Speaker 1: All right?
- 50:39Speaker 3: Call back in Lorenzo. You was on hold for a while.
- 50:42Speaker 3: Patty is an aguam.
- 50:43Speaker 1: What's up? Patty?
- 50:45Speaker 5: Guys?
- 50:46Speaker 1: How are we doing?
- 50:48Speaker 5: Doing all right today? A little stuffy, but I'm doing
- 50:51Speaker 5: all right. I want to ask you guys a question
- 50:54Speaker 5: about Drake May And I tried to propose this. I
- 50:58Speaker 5: tried to write this thing yesterday with you. But just realistically,
- 51:03Speaker 5: do you guys think it's Do you think it's more
- 51:07Speaker 5: probable than not that he has his breakout year next
- 51:11Speaker 5: year as opposed to this year? And hear me out
- 51:13Speaker 5: on this. You know, he only had two years college
- 51:16Speaker 5: experience starting. If you look at some of the best
- 51:20Speaker 5: some of the guys that had the best rookie seasons,
- 51:22Speaker 5: the two guys that come to mind most recently are
- 51:24Speaker 5: Justin Herbert and last year Jaden Daniels, both of those
- 51:28Speaker 5: guys started at least four years. I know Herbert didn't
- 51:31Speaker 5: start like all the games this first two years.
- 51:34Speaker 8: And if you just built that.
- 51:35Speaker 5: The guy's like Joe Burrow. I know he only started
- 51:37Speaker 5: two seasons, but to me, like May has more tools,
- 51:41Speaker 5: Burrows a much better processor. I mean, I think he's
- 51:45Speaker 5: he's he's you know, far superior as a processor. And
- 51:48Speaker 5: I hope make it's that point. But to me, it's
- 51:52Speaker 5: just an experience thing. And I think, like if you know,
- 51:56Speaker 5: and Paul brought this up, I can't remember if it
- 51:58Speaker 5: was yesterday, Evan or a Thursday on PU I mean,
- 52:02Speaker 5: this is four offensive coordinators and four years for him too,
- 52:06Speaker 5: So there's a lot that's being thrown at this guy.
- 52:08Speaker 5: He doesn't have the experience and he's got all the tools,
- 52:12Speaker 5: and I'm just I hope he puts it together this year,
- 52:14Speaker 5: but more realistically, like I could see him having his
- 52:17Speaker 5: breakout your next year. Although I can seem improven. And
- 52:20Speaker 5: I'll end on this, I want to see what you
- 52:22Speaker 5: guys thought about that. Heaven, why not jump around from
- 52:26Speaker 5: house the pain for the runout song?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Okay, I can see that we did this. I've done
- 52:32Speaker 1: this so many times jump around. Come on, you don't
- 52:35Speaker 1: like jump around us. It's a good song, but like,
- 52:37Speaker 1: come on, let's do something new.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough, Thanks for the call of Patty. This
- 52:42Speaker 3: was a big topic of conversation yesterday on Filter, and
- 52:44Speaker 3: I know it got some some love on the Sports
- 52:47Speaker 3: Up too, and I brought it up the other night
- 52:49Speaker 3: the Runout. There's people got takes on this, they got opinions.
- 52:52Speaker 3: Jump around.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I think you're right, it's it's been done a little
- 52:55Speaker 1: bit too many times.
- 52:56Speaker 3: I agree with that. It's kind of like the cliche
- 52:59Speaker 3: get the stadium excited song the breakout season for Drake
- 53:03Speaker 3: may I. This goes back to a little bit of
- 53:05Speaker 3: what we talked about last week. For me, like I,
- 53:09Speaker 3: this is my one concern about what's going on around
- 53:11Speaker 3: Drake may here. I think Josh the world of Josh
- 53:13Speaker 3: McDaniels as an offensive coordinator. I think he's a great
- 53:16Speaker 3: coach and I think he's a great oc maybe not
- 53:18Speaker 3: a great head coach, but a great osay And the
- 53:21Speaker 3: concern that I had was the learning curve, and that's
- 53:24Speaker 3: sort of what we're seeing now, where like the timing
- 53:26Speaker 3: and the rhythm, it just doesn't seem smooth right now.
- 53:29Speaker 3: For Drake May it still seems a little bit cumbersome
- 53:32Speaker 3: and clunky and at times, and Diggs isn't out there yet.
- 53:37Speaker 3: You're still trying to get Kyle Williams up and running,
- 53:39Speaker 3: but at times you still feel the lack of like
- 53:42Speaker 3: a true game breaker and within the offense as well
- 53:45Speaker 3: in these practices. And I know that a lot of people,
- 53:48Speaker 3: you know, I just quickly checked my my Twitter mentions
- 53:51Speaker 3: was always dangerous coming off of OTA practice. And there
- 53:54Speaker 3: are some comments about how you know, the clunkiness or
- 53:56Speaker 3: the unevenness of the offense. We just keep hearing this
- 53:59Speaker 3: here and you're and year out and I get that,
- 54:02Speaker 3: Like I I sympathize with that. I think that's that's
- 54:05Speaker 3: fair to say that. And the breakout year whatever we want, however,
- 54:10Speaker 3: we want to you know, tech, you know, define it,
- 54:15Speaker 3: define that, thank you, however you want to define that.
- 54:18Speaker 3: Between a new totally new coaching staff with a new
- 54:22Speaker 3: offensive system and new offensive coordinator and the fact that
- 54:25Speaker 3: they're still kind of building around him, They're gonna have
- 54:28Speaker 3: a rookie left tackle, uh there there really don't truly
- 54:31Speaker 3: have that number one wide receiver unless Digs like throws
- 54:34Speaker 3: it back right to his Buffalo days and is that guy.
- 54:38Speaker 3: So in general, like it might not be we might
- 54:42Speaker 3: not be fully there, and it might not all.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Be on Drake.
- 54:44Speaker 3: May you know that his rookie coaching staff wasn't the
- 54:48Speaker 3: best it could have been. Then they had to change coaches.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Now he's in a different system. Now, the timing, the
- 54:53Speaker 3: rhythm of it, at least early on in May doesn't
- 54:55Speaker 3: look great, doesn't look smooth quite yet in terms of
- 54:58Speaker 3: the processing and the post snap stuff.
- 55:02Speaker 1: And so yeah, maybe there.
- 55:03Speaker 3: Is a little bit more of a building up period here,
- 55:08Speaker 3: especially early on, where he doesn't come out year two
- 55:11Speaker 3: and make that immediate leap. Now, I mean by the
- 55:14Speaker 3: end of the season he does, and that's what we're
- 55:16Speaker 3: all hoping for. But I still have some of those
- 55:19Speaker 3: same concerns even though he didn't go out there and
- 55:21Speaker 3: throw four picks again with this the overall the timeline
- 55:25Speaker 3: of how quickly this is all going to come together
- 55:27Speaker 3: on offense, And I don't think that's all just because
- 55:30Speaker 3: of Drake. May I think a lot of that has
- 55:32Speaker 3: to do with, well, are they really going to be
- 55:34Speaker 3: good enough at the skill positions to ev you know,
- 55:36Speaker 3: to have him elevated and all that kind of stuff
- 55:39Speaker 3: I think is a big factor as well.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'm with you on that. I just think
- 55:44Speaker 1: you got to see some sign of growth. Maybe the
- 55:46Speaker 1: leap from year two to year three is bigger, but
- 55:48Speaker 1: you need to see some sort of leap from year
- 55:51Speaker 1: one year two. You don't want to see him be stagnant.
- 55:53Speaker 1: That would be worrying.
- 55:54Speaker 3: There's a lot of there's a lot of praise going
- 55:56Speaker 3: around right now for the Patriots offseason for Drake May.
- 56:00Speaker 3: I saw Benjamin Solac on ESPN, but he really went
- 56:04Speaker 3: had a big post where he said he'd be just
- 56:05Speaker 3: as excited about Drake May as commanders fans or are
- 56:09Speaker 3: about Jayden Daniels. And I understand where ben was coming
- 56:13Speaker 3: from with that post, because if you look at the
- 56:16Speaker 3: level of difficulty like he wrote, you know, Drake May
- 56:18Speaker 3: is in an offense with an offensive coordinator that not
- 56:21Speaker 3: a lot of people were crazy about, and Alex Van
- 56:23Speaker 3: Pelt he had the worst offensive line in football. He
- 56:27Speaker 3: probably had a top bottom five I should say, pass
- 56:31Speaker 3: catching group if not you know, thirty second, like it
- 56:33Speaker 3: might have been the worst pass catching group in the
- 56:35Speaker 3: NFL last year as well. So the roster around him
- 56:38Speaker 3: was not good, and yet he still went out there
- 56:41Speaker 3: and made plays. And I feel like that's what we're
- 56:43Speaker 3: seeing though from these practices, that there's still these moments
- 56:46Speaker 3: like he had a moment today where he just kind
- 56:48Speaker 3: of tiptoes around some interior pressure off platform, drops the
- 56:53Speaker 3: arm angle, you know, flicks it out there to a
- 56:55Speaker 3: receiver on the move, and gets a nice play out
- 56:58Speaker 3: of it out of a play that probably should have
- 56:59Speaker 3: been stopped in the backfield. But the big word for
- 57:03Speaker 3: him has always been, even going back to North Carolina,
- 57:06Speaker 3: is can he consistently do it? Like he has these
- 57:09Speaker 3: flashes of franchise quarterback potential and elite quarterback potential that
- 57:14Speaker 3: we saw last year that we see in these practices.
- 57:16Speaker 3: But that's what it was at North Carolina too, right.
- 57:19Speaker 3: It was kind of like for every step forward, there
- 57:21Speaker 3: was a step back, and there for every good play,
- 57:24Speaker 3: there was maybe a couple bad or not so good plays.
- 57:27Speaker 3: And is he getna round out his entire game. I'm
- 57:30Speaker 3: not trying to rain on parades or like trash Drake
- 57:33Speaker 3: by any means, because everybody knows how I'm a Drake
- 57:36Speaker 3: may guy, and I'm optimistic about Drake May. I just
- 57:40Speaker 3: think some of the stuff that I've heard and read
- 57:42Speaker 3: about the Patriots is obviously, especially from the national media,
- 57:45Speaker 3: is getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, like can
- 57:48Speaker 3: we see him do it first?
- 57:50Speaker 1: Like well, so, so much of it is predicated even
- 57:52Speaker 1: like for me in the wind project, I had ten
- 57:54Speaker 1: wins off the schedule, right, Like that's predicated on Drake
- 57:58Speaker 1: May taking some sort of a year two leap. If
- 58:00Speaker 1: he doesn't take a year two leap, a lot of
- 58:02Speaker 1: the stuff that we're talking about doesn't apply.
- 58:04Speaker 3: I see a lot of praise for May, for the
- 58:08Speaker 3: off season, for the coaching staff, and at the end
- 58:12Speaker 3: of the day, like they're gonna have to go out
- 58:13Speaker 3: there and actually, dude, like this is all projection, Like
- 58:17Speaker 3: they're gonna have to go out there and do it,
- 58:18Speaker 3: and I would I personally. Maybe it's because they've won
- 58:21Speaker 3: eight games over the last two seasons, Like it's as
- 58:24Speaker 3: simple as that. That I've been burned and I'm not
- 58:27Speaker 3: ready to believe again. But let's just see it happen
- 58:32Speaker 3: first before we get too crazy. All right, Let's go
- 58:34Speaker 3: back to the phones. Lorenzo's back, Lorenzo, what's going on?
- 58:40Speaker 6: Uh?
- 58:40Speaker 1: Hello, Hey, you're on there. What's up all right?
- 58:43Speaker 6: Hey man?
- 58:43Speaker 8: Thank you, thank you so much for letting me on.
- 58:45Speaker 8: I just have a few questions. That's pretty quick. Like
- 58:49Speaker 8: last year when we faced man coverage right like you said,
- 58:52Speaker 8: with Josh mccamsy like Roughouse pick Rouse crossers constantly like
- 58:56Speaker 8: with AVP, we didn't really see any of that. I
- 58:58Speaker 8: was wanting if you think that doctor return because I
- 59:00Speaker 8: know that our receivers going to separate, but you can
- 59:02Speaker 8: kind of help with that by creating traffic. Second, how
- 59:07Speaker 8: Josphontaniels especially spent time around colleges. I was wondering if
- 59:10Speaker 8: you think that there would be RPOs that aren't just
- 59:12Speaker 8: quarterback option runs like how Miami does it. The forty
- 59:16Speaker 8: nine ers do it, like motioning and creating space. And
- 59:20Speaker 8: do you think doctor Staniel's changed from quote like a
- 59:23Speaker 8: heavy game plan guy to more guys willing to adjust,
- 59:26Speaker 8: or do you think that if the offense struggles just
- 59:29Speaker 8: because of the game plan, like strictly just execution because
- 59:32Speaker 8: we know this is a big game plan offense. And
- 59:35Speaker 8: can Kyle William get open in the middle of the
- 59:37Speaker 8: field because we don't have guys who can do that.
- 59:39Speaker 8: It's all like jump ball, guys think consistent and do
- 59:41Speaker 8: you think Ethan Chisholm can be like a quick reliable
- 59:44Speaker 8: state people thinking for Drake Mick And that's about it,
- 59:46Speaker 8: thinks all.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Right, thanks Lorenzo. There's a lot of questions, but thanks
- 59:49Speaker 1: for the call.
- 59:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the first one about the scheme and
- 59:53Speaker 3: like helping guys against man coverage, even though it wasn't don't.
- 59:57Speaker 3: I don't remember exactly where they finished, but when Drake
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: May first start got in there last year for started
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: starting games, they were actually efficiency wise, they were really
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: good against man coverage. A big reason why is because
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: he was scrambling against man coverage and so that advantage
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: that they have now with man. And I would also say,
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: just to give credit, like Pop Douglas is a pretty
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: good man coverage beater in terms of receivers. He's quick,
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: he's good at creating separation, he can get open. I've
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: talked in the past about some of the concerns I
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: have with him again against zone, but against man out
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: of the slot, like Pop is a pretty good man
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: coverage receiver in that respect. So they had Drake May scrambling,
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: they had you know, Pop Douglas in isolation winning routes over.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: The middle of the field.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: So they weren't a complete disaster from like an EPA
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: standpoint against man coverage last year because of those two things. Now,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: they didn't do a ton of help. You know, they
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: were stagnant offense. They were like more you know, old
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: school West Coast formationally and things like that. And McDaniel's
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: will certainly help with a lot of that. He's gonna
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: put receivers in stacks, he's gonna put receivers in bunches.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: He's going to run pick plays. We've seen him run
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: pick plays for years here, crossers, pick plays, different alignments
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: to get receivers off the line of scrimmage and away
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: from press coverage. So he's certainly gonna all that kind
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: of stuff is I would say tenants or hallmarks of
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: a Josh McDaniels offense. So they're certainly going to go
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: in that direction and have all that in their bag.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: I would say that in a lot of ways, that
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: two lends itself to Kyle Williams, who in college I
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: was a really good first level separator on a lot
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: of those types of routes like slants and angles and
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: coming into a bunch of That big touchdown he scored
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: against Syracuse was like a Josh McDaniels staple play that
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: they're going to probably run a ton. So I think
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: Kyle Williams getting open over the middle of the field
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: is a big reason of why he's here. I think
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: it's a big strength of his game, his catch and
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: run ability. His ability to catch balls over the middle field.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: First of all, get open over the middlefield, but then
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: also transition into yards after the catch with the football.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: Those are two strengths I would say. So if you
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: marry those things together, that's that's where That's what we're
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: hoping we're going here, Like, that's what we're hoping you're
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: going to see out of this offense. I have some
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: thoughts on the run game stuff too, But what do
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: you think about this McDaniel's offense from that standpoint?
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, I mean, I think we're gonna see a
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: lot more that me Man Beater stuff there.
- 1:02:22Speaker 7: Thin is.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Some of those a lot of the quick release routes
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: with Van Pelt were more inside stuff. So some of
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: those more quick release outside. Some of those digs and
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: things like that. Why can I think of it? Edelman
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: and the super Bowl on the goal line. Oh, like
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a whip route. Yeah, whiprout, thank you. I don't know.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I couldn't think of that. I think we'll see more
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: of that. Yeah, he's gonna be helpful against man coverage.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: To the point he made about are they gonna be
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: more of a game plan offense? Yeah, are they gonna adjust?
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: I think the game plan offense means adjusting? Yeah, so
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I do. I do think there's is this gonna turn
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: into a nerds versus No, it's really not. No, it's
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: really not. I just think I think they're gonna be
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: pue of one of those that practice today, and we
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: have one of those about every day. Yes, and nerds
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: are taking over. As Felger says, we have lost the war.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: But it doesn't mean I won't stop fighting. But you could,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: you could just like embrace it. No, but I won't.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: But I won't the whole point, I won't a little bit.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I will stick. I will stick to my guns. But
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: you made it about nerds on me. When it comes
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to McDaniels, I do think they're gonna be a game
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: plan offense. I don't think what we see week one
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: is gonna be what they are forever. I think they're
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: gonna attack different teams differently. They're gonna hunt weaknesses, they're
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: gonna hunt matchups, things like that, because at his core,
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: that's what Josh McDaniels does. Josh McDaniels wants to get
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: in the lab and pick it into an opponent of part.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: His offense is more about what the defense does poorly
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: than what his offense does well. And it's probably my
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: favorite thing about Josh McDaniels. I love teams that operate
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: that way. I love teams that operate that way on
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. We talked about this when
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: when I had you on Monday night. Bad teams can't win.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Good teams have a way to win. Great teams have
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: multiple ways to win. Elite teams can win any way
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: they want. So I like teams that actually, and that's
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: in any sport. It's just philosophy of mine. But I
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: like teams that proactively go about making sure that even
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: if they are really good at one thing, sometimes that
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: one thing is gonna be there for one reason or another.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Maybe you just don't have it that day, maybe the
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: opponent as a strengthen stopping that whatever. I like teams
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: are proactively going about make sure they have more than
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: one ways to win. Josh mcdani's has always done that. Again,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: that's probably my favorite thing about his philosophy is that
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: we are not going to be handcuffed into relying on
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: one thing too much. We may have a preference, we
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: may have something we lean on more, but we're never
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: gonna get caught without a plan B or a plan C.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: So one of my favorite Josh McDaniel's coaching moments during
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: his time with the Patriots is the Super Bowl. The
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: second m Super Bowl is at fifty three, right, yes,
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: So they put together that game winning drive at the
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: end of the Super Bowl, and they couldn't move the
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: ball all night long, Like we all remember the game,
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: they couldn't move the ball all night long. They've got
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: nothing going. Julian Edelman was really the only guy that
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: was making any plays on offense, and they went to
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: the sideline and Josh McDaniels literally drew up a play
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: on the sideline that was not in the weekly install
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: It was not in the game plan. He literally just
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: drew it up like in dirt, like you would in
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: the backyard, drew up a play. It was a delay
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: release to Gronk, and they got Gronk out on the
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: delay release and he caught the football and turned up
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: the field and gained some positive yards. And that was
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: kind of the drive starter. And then they went to
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: that twenty two personnel with the two backs and they
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: flexed out Rex Burkhead on the outside and they ran
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: hosts three times in a row, hit it three different
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: ways and went right down the field with the seam
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: shot to Gronk being like the big play of the drive,
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: and that entire drive you to your game plan point
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: and like looking at what the defense was doing, that
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: entire drive was an adjustment, Like that entire drive was
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: this is what Wade Phillips has been doing to us
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: all night.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: We's counter it. Let's counter it. Like what do I
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: have in my back pocket that I can counter it?
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And to throw shade at my own people? Right, Like,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: that's the type of drive.
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: That Kyle Shanahan has not put together that Josh McDaniels did, right,
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: And that's that's not the spreadsheet. That's what makes him great.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: That that's what makes him a great play caller and
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: ablate a great offensive coordinator. And to that point, to
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: the caller's point about being game plan oriented, if you
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: take that away, like you're not, you're not maximizing Josh McDaniels. Like,
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: that's what makes Josh McDaniels unique is his game plan
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: ability and his ability to adjust in game with play calling.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: And if you go into it and say like, we're
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: just gonna do what we do and we're not gonna
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: adjust and we're not gonna change anything, and that's not
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: you're not letting him use one of his superpowers. Like
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: that's truly one of his superpowers. So I hope that
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: that's the direction that they're going to continue to go
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: In the run game question, he asked, And and sort
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: of like the RPO question, we haven't. We're really early
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: on to seeing some of that stuff. So I'm still waiting,
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: like to make a judgment on it. It's too early.
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: It's it's way too early.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Maybe we see more of that once we get out
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: of the basic install period. But the one thing that
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: I have been interested in from what they've done from
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: a run game perspective is they've done a lot of
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: different stuff, and.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: You got to have all those different options in your back. Yeah,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: not to Joshington, not that they didn't always, but like
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: outside zone really wasn't there a go to play. They
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: actually used outside zone a lot in the past, and
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: short yardage like goal line, fourth and one, they would
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: run some outside zone, but they didn't run a ton
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: of outside zone as like a base play like first
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: and ten from the twenty five are going to run
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: outside zone. They are traditionally a downhill run offense in
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: this scheme. Now he did it a little bit more
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: in Vegas, and now he's doing it a little bit
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: in these practices, So maybe this is what he's doing
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: now right Like there's a little bit of a West
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Coast flavor to it. You obviously have the quarterback that
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: fits it. You have a couple running backs and Gibson
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: and Henderson that fit it that can run that kind
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: of scheme at one cut and go and get up
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: the field. Not that Remandra can't, but I would say
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: from my standpoint, it's always good to have a back
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: that's got some speed to the edge in order to
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: really set up this type of play because you have
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: to get the defense to respect the bounce, Like if
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: they don't respect the bounce, then they're just going to
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: crowd the middle of the field and they're gonna make
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: you string it out and it's just not gonna look good.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: So if they can do it on the left side
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: of the law offensive line, especially, they're gonna have Will Campbell,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: who's a great athlete and can certainly whether it's front
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: side seal or backside cutoff, like, he can definitely balk
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: in an outside zone scheme. And then they might have
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: Cold Strange might be the guard, Jared Wilson might be
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: the guard on the left side. Like, those are two
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: guys that can definitely specialize in reaching and you know,
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: second level combos and things like that in and outside
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: zone scheme. And then you get Drake involved on those
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: bootlegs and get him out of the pocket and on
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: the move. All those things, I feel like are good
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: things for this offense potentially if they can get it
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: to hit right. So we've seen a little bit more
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: of that in these practices. Every once in a while
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: you'll see like a quarterback run, you know, design read
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: option type of play in there. But I don't think
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: there's been enough of a sample yet to get too
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: crazy about how often that's going to be called. But
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: I have definitely noticed just a wide variety of run
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: schemes that maybe with Brady in the past, and it
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: might have been scar somebody's talked about this in the
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: past about well, you know, when you have Brady, no
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: offense to Brady as amazing as he was out everything else, Like,
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: you're not going to run a lot of bootlegs with
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: Tom Brady, right Like, that's just not a strength of
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: his sore. If you're running a lot outside zone and
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: then you're not running the boot off of the outside
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: zone and you're kind of not running it, right like,
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: that's not the system, Like, that's not how it works
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: to the fullest. So they didn't have a ton of
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: boots in the offense because Brady wasn't a runner and
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: it wasn't you know, that kind of athlete, So they
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: didn't really do a lot outside zone. But Drake is
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: so again to your point, maybe that isn't Josh mcdaniels's uh,
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: you know, right hook, but it's like something that he's
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: got that's.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: A compliment to have.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, all right, let's get back to the calls.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: Todd is in the car today.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: What's up? Todd?
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: I honestly have to say.
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: I don't know him enough about Drake May's history playing
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: and college and stuff to know. Can he be a
- 1:10:22Speaker 6: game plan type QB?
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: Can he adjustin, you.
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: Know, game from games or does he need a set,
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: you know, a series of plays in a playbook that
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: his you know, what his standard is and where he
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: gets comfortable. So I'm a little bit worried about that.
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: And I have one favorite ask the two of you.
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: Rook used to have a draft, an NFL draft before
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: each season. Do you think you guys could run that,
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: because since he's kind of gone, that'd be kind of
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: cool if you do that. So I got a request
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: and a question for you.
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Thank God, What do you mean by your draft? Yeah?
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: What do you mean? Todd?
- 1:10:55Speaker 6: Is the NFL dot Com draft option, and Matt can
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: explain it. You'd email out to all the people that
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: signed up for it, and then everybody would show.
- 1:11:05Speaker 8: Up and we all would draft our teams and TWNFL
- 1:11:10Speaker 8: dot com.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Oh, like a fantasy football a fantasy football.
- 1:11:13Speaker 8: Thing, like a fantasy football league.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it was fantasy football. Yes, okay, got it? Todd?
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: All right, thank you? Sorry, we both are not We're not.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Another one of us is truly a huge fantasy guy.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: I'm not. I Yeah, I did the Punter League last year.
- 1:11:25Speaker 6: That was it.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: I don't even know if we're doing that again this year.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so I I just runs the league, so I
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: do hurdle because you know, you gotta do that one.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: But I have one team, maybe two max if her
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: dad does his league again as well. But that's only
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: because it's family that I'm doing. You know, I'm doing
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: leagues with them.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: But my Favorit book had a league and I guess
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: the winner got the host with John or something. Oh, yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: that is true. Yeah, my favorite thing with fantasy is
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: just sitting there, like would be sitting there on Sunday
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: and watching all the scores roll in and watching Red
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Zone and like the live time. Yeah, you know, I
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I don't get the same thrill out of it just
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: checking Sunday night and seeing how everybody did. In reality
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: is on Sundays, I'm here, I'm working. I can't really
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: do that. It just turns into me checking at the end.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: So that kind of took the air out of the
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: balloon for me.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that's totally fair. I feel the exact same way
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: about fantasy. And then on top of that.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: I am if we do the Kicker the punder league
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: again though you're in the puddle league. Yes, no, yes, yes,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: you're gonna be the.
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: Other thing that I find really hard about fantasy and
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I'm not asking for any sympathy whatsoever.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: I have an awesome job.
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: But when you have to make those last minute lineup
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: to adjustments when an actives come out, we're just busy.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Right, We're dealing with the we're doing that's the thrill,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. We're doing other things.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: And I over the last couple of years, there's been
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: a couple of times where I've started guys that are
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: inactive because I've just been too busy to working on Sunday.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: You don't get to do fantasy football in real time.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: Like I just live vicariously through my friends teams because
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: they asked me for advice. Not always right. I don't
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: know why they still ask me, but they asked me
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: for advice, and I usually get You know, I have
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: two or three friends that played pretty intently, so I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: know who's on by we get time, we get talked over.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I know who's on their teams because they're asking me
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: this and that so I lived like Carelly through those teams.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: I root for those teams.
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: So I actually what I did this past year because
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: this happened to me a lot of the last couple,
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: especially since I started working for the team and traveling
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: to every road game. And I actually just like I
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: have just do it, Like I just I gave her
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: my password, and I was like if I if I'm
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: starting somebody who's.
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Like I wanted to scratch her. I don't care. This
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: is it's a that's an episode of the league right there.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: If she wins, then we both win. If she so,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter. I remember when when Kevin hacked,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: didn't Kevin hack Jenny's computer to Kevin's computer to change
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the line of collusion. That's right. That such a great
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: show in a bad way, like they like yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: she she no, Well there was one where she thought
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: she was helping him because she didn't trust It was
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: like a running joke through the show that she knew
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Baull better than he did, and she kind of did.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: Yeah and so she but like he found out, but
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: I think he ended up winning. Anyway, I'm due for rewatch.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: But all that was such a good I will fully
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: admit that that just does better in fantasy football than
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: me one hundred percent because to your point about us
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: not watching on Sundays, like I don't watch a ton
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: of the rest of the league all the time.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Because until you have to right about to play the Patriots.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Literally, I literally watched the Patriots, and I watched the
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: teams the Patriots play like those are the two that's it, right,
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: So you know, we don't get uh, we don't get.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Red zone, Paul.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: You know, Paul, there's a running joke on the post
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: game show that Paul watches red zone, you know while
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: the postgame show is going on.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: And I we don't really get to do that.
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: So I I will admit I I've lost my touch
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: in fantasy football over the last few weeks. Through I
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: go back, I used to be really good at it,
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: like five ten years ago, and now that it's like
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: my job, it's.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: It's a little hard.
- 1:14:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: So I'll go back though, and I think it's NFL
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: plus as like the ten minute condensed twenty minute condensed game.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: I usually go back through on Monday and watch all
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: the games like that. But even still that's not like
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: a perfect encapsulation that can all run together because you're
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: watching what like ten of those twelve of those.
- 1:15:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't even have the time for that because
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: we're I'm watching the Patriots all twenty two and I
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: got to take my notes and break it all down
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: and you know, inspect their film. So I just kind
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: of bypassed that. That's why I and I hear the
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: complaints about Thursday Night Football and the product and stuff.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: I absolutely love Thursday Night Football because it's one of
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: the only times where I actually had to sit down
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: and watch football uninterrupted. So like Thursday and then sometime,
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: you know, I'm usually working pretty late on Mondays during
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: the season, but like every once in a while, if
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: I get my stuff done, like Monday Night Football, any
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: primetime game, I'm in because I actually get to watch
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: the game without working.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: Well, we got more. We have more primetime windows this year,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: so there's more red zone Sundays. Like the past couple
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: of years, it's been by Week and Thursday Night Football
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: and that's it. And maybe they had a four o'clock game,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you got like the first half of the one o'clock
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: window of red zone. We actually have a few full
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: red zone Sundays this year, and I love one o'clock
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: home home game. You come home around eight o'clock after
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: the game was worthing, usually walk in, walking in, like
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: right on your carry on.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: There's nothing better than sitting down knowing your day is
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: done and you know the day is in the bar
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: and then you get in there and Sunday night football
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: is just starting and you're like, this is great. So
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: I'm I love Thursday night football and I'm in the
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: minority of that. But it's totally selfish. There was one
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: other thing that Todd brought up that I wanted that
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: was more serious than what we were just talking about. Oh,
- 1:16:29Speaker 3: the Drake May and you know, him having the mental
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: capacity to kind of adjust and all this, I would say,
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: it's TBD. Like I'm not sitting here saying that Drake
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: May doesn't because I don't know. I don't think we
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: could really say that based off of last year because
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: I just don't know what they were running last year. Like,
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: I just don't think last year.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Was truly.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: A McDaniel's PhD level offense, right, So, like it's hard
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: to say based off of last year, and then he
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: was in college before that, so it's not that I
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: don't think he has that bone in his body to
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: be able to be the maestro, to be the you know,
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: the conductor at the line of scrimmage and change week
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: to week. And may I think he probably does have
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: some of that, But based off of what we're seeing
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: out at this practice, you know, today and last week,
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: there's there's a learning curve going on right now with him,
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: and there's a timing thing and a rhythm thing going
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: on with him right now that was really similar to
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: what we saw out of him last year at this
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: time and at the beginning of training camp, and we
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: go always go back to that, like Eagles joint practice
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: territory of training camp. It did seem like a flip,
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: a switch was flipped in that practice week where after
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: that he looked like the better quarterback in camp or
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: the best quarterback in camp from that point on. And
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: I hope we get to that point with him this summer,
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: maybe sooner, but I hope we get to that point
- 1:17:54Speaker 3: eventually sometime soon, but we're not fully there yet. And
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: that that's the one hesitation that I just have with
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: this whole thing right now, is that he still looks
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: like a guy that is learning and it's like in
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: a process and is trying to get through things and
- 1:18:10Speaker 3: get through progressions and trust what he's seeing. And I
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: just don't fully see him letting it loose just yet.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: And that has to come before we start worrying about, Oh,
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: the Raiders are like a big quarters defense and these
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: are the quarters beaters we're gonna put in this game plan,
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: and like, you can't get to that point until you
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: get you that's like step three, and we're on step one,
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: Like you got to get through this part of the
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: offseason and part of the install before we can start
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: talking about game planning. And one week we're playing a
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: zone defense, heavy defense that we're gonna run these plays.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: The next week we're playing a post safety man defense,
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: and so we're gonna run those plays. Like that's all
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: great in theory if we get there, you know, And
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: I just don't know if we're there yet, certainly not
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: in terms of this time of year. But I'm also
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: not sure if this is the year that that's going
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: to be fully unlocked. It it's a concern of mine,
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: it really is that not that he can't do it,
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: but that how long it's going to take, how long
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: it's going to take. Yeah, like, how long are we
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: going to be sitting here two weeks into camp and
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: still waiting for the switch to flip on. It will
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: flip on, I have no doubt about that, but just
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: how quickly can it flip on for him is a
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: big question. Did you have a thought on that at all?
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Or no? You're pretty much covered.
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: All right, let's get to the back to the phones.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: Rio is in Texas without Brio.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: Hey, gentlemen, how you doing this afternoon?
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: Good?
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: It could have been one to call in since the draft,
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: but unfortunately the timing hasn't been right. Since you have
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: a later show today that gives me an opportunity to
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: So I just want to make a comment and then
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: ask a couple of questions. First is for Bart Kyle
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: Williams Gang represent.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Good call, first time I called in.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: You guys love that guy, So yeah. First question, did
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: you see that clip of last week during OTAs where
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: Williams caught a long pass and then Fun Diggs was
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: celebrating with him, and Diggs was out there looked like
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: he wasn't wearing a brace or anything on that prepared knee,
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: and the knee looked pretty swollen. Kind of messed up.
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: Have you guys seen him in person to see, you know,
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: how he's progressing as far as that injury goes.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: We haven't. He hasn't been here for crack.
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: So now that was the one practice just based off
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: of photos that we posted to the website that we
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: can we know that he was at because of the pictures,
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: but there was no media at the practice.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: Okay, okay, Yeah. And my second question is I made
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: this comment during the draft when they drafted Joshua Farmer.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Are you guys concerned at all with how light they
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: are upfront on defense? I had asked about the Seattle
- 1:20:57Speaker 4: cover three looks, and I wasn't really talking about the
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: back end that they That's what I focused on. I
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: was talking more about the four to three under that
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: they played, where they were able to roll out that bigger,
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: strong side defensive end. You know, a guy who's potentially
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: too gap and kind of you know, get some beef upfront.
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: Because I just keep going back to like how they
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: played against the Jaguars last season and you know, you
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: got what was seventeen or eighteen run plays in a
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: row and they just couldn't get off the field. Do
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: you see them, you know, having the schematics, versatility, and
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: the personnel to be able to actually adapt if the
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: team decides they want to try to run down there.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: For Yeah, that's a that's a good question, Rio, thanks
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: for the call. I have been small see, concerned about
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: the size up front for a while now. Now tong
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: is a monster. He's a big dude.
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: Yeah, bar More when he's healthy and he's right, is
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: also a big dude. But I still feel like they like,
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: what's their their best run defense front? Now, Landry's a
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: really good run player out on the edge. Yeah, he's
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: a good duet. Yeah, you know, through the middle of
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: the defense. And especially because they've gotten a little bit
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: smaller at linebacker too, by choice, they've gotten smaller at linebacker.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: I do have some concern about teams leaning on them now.
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: It's gonna be only a certain amount of teams are
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: stylistically prepared to do that, right, Like, I don't think
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: every team, especially in the modern NFL, is built to
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: take advantage of that. But they have Buffalo twice on
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: their schedule. Buffalo has kind of become that a little bit,
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: you know, certainly more so last year than a year's past,
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: where you know with James Cook, like they can be
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: a bully, like they can run the ball down your
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: throat in Buffalo Baltimore is on the schedule, certainly can
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: do that Vegas Week one with Ashon Genty might try
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: to do that, right that that might be what they
- 1:22:45Speaker 3: might build their offense around.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: So I hear Rio's point.
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: You know in the Seattle three they had the designated
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: pass rusher, the the Leo or the Rio role that
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: you know was truly a designated pass rusher in their front.
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: That role I based off of what we've seen in
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: at practice they've used Keon White, I would say mostly
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: on that side of the of the formation or that
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: side of the field, and that type of role.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: Landry.
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: They they like Landry as a run defender, and rightfully
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: so he was a really good run defender even last
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: year when the pass rush numbers dipped a little bit.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: So could they use like a.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: True three four now he gets three four is the
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: wrong way way to call it? Like a true too,
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: like the Rio's point, like a two gapping end maybe,
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: But I do think that bar Moore is that when
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: he's right, So maybe they end up kicking Barmore a
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: little bit further outside if they have to. But it's
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: something that is a concern to me, A small seat
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: concern right now is right up the gut. Like I'm
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: not talking about the edges. I think they're gonna have
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: the athleticism and the playmakers outside with Landry and Keon
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: White and Anthony Jennings probably mixing in a little bit
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: there on the edge. But our team's going to be
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: able to line up under center and run it right
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: at you. And if they do, are you going to
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: be heavy enough sturdy enough to stop it?
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: Yeah? We've talked about this, like are they maybe a
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: defensive tackle short now? They have some guys that are
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: smaller that are skilled run players like Joshua Farmer. So
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: even like Milton Williams, right, we'll see what mil Williams
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: wasn't really be used in that role in Philly. We'll
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: see how he looks in that. But I would not
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: hate them outing another nose tackle just to add another
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: big body in the middle.
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a it's a fair question there by Rio
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: all Right, Randy is in Providence.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: What's up, Randy?
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Hey, guys, how's going to good? So a couple more
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: questions for you number one. You guys have mentioned a
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: couple of times spanning a different podcasts, not just this one,
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: but Wilson playing guard potentially, And I'm just wondering if
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: you guys know if he has any history at all there,
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: And why do you think that if you want Wilson
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: and Bradberry on the field at the same time, that
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: it would be Wilson you prefer to move as a
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: boat to Bradbury.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: Yeah? Oh what else you got?
- 1:25:05Speaker 9: Okay?
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so two more quick ones. Do you think this
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: is going to be a run heavier offense? I think
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: back to like the early days of Brady where it
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: was like they were mostly asking him to just not
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: make mistakes.
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: He would throw for like two hundred and twenty yards
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: all the time. I remember I used to like take
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: him on my fantasy team and be.
- 1:25:24Speaker 8: So annoyed at it.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: But he wouldn't throw the interceptions. You know, it was
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: just no mistakes. And do you think he's going to
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: kind of want to slow play Drake along like that
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: and just say what, We're not going to ask you
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: to throw for miles. We're just going to ask you
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: to not throw to the other team. Yeah, And then
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: my last one was just what sort of patience do
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: you think Rabel was going to have with Diggs kind
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: of social life. I guess it's like his girlfriend is
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: Cardi b. That's not like a tame celebrity. A lot
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: of pictures and stuff like that are bound to pop up,
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: and he's bound. This is the second ota, Brad just
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: he already got a question about one. Right, it's gonna happen.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: What sort of patients do you think he's gonna have
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: with that?
- 1:26:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's all fair questions, Randy. What was his first question?
- 1:26:08Speaker 3: That was a good question. I can't remember.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Oh boy, we're bad today. Yeah, train sitting out in
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: the sun. There's a good question too, And hang on,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: I'll go back and find it. Okay, just to answer
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: backwards because I just totally spaced right there. Sorry, Randy.
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: I would say that the patients thing with Diggs is
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: is a good question. I I don't think that, you know,
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: we're I'm that worried about it yet. Because of the
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: type of coach that Rabel is though. I think Rabel
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: is the type of guy that can get people to
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: buy in, they can get people locked in. And I'll
- 1:26:44Speaker 3: just and Diggs's defense I'll just say again, like I
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: he was, he looks really impressive in these workout videos, right,
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: and it looks like he's really attacking rehab and doing
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: a good job with that. So as long as he's
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: coming and doing his job that he's being paid to
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: do in terms of playing football for the Patriots, and
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: he's not, you know, getting into any legal trouble off
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: the field. Like I have to imagine that none of
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: this has really been made into a huge deal just yet.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Internally, he's that's a guest, He's Stefan Diggs. He's a celebrity. Yeah,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: Like he's a beyond sports celebrity, and you know what
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: you're getting into when you sign a guy like that. Yeah. So, uh,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: the first question was going, so we've talked about if
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: it's gonna be Wilson Bradbury on the field together, that
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: was it's Wilson at left guard. Why not move Bradbury
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: because Bradbury is a true center? Yeah, Bradbury has been
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: a center going all the way back to college. Is
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: seventh year in the league and he's been a center
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: for all six of his previous seasons. He's also smaller. Yeah,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: I was gonna say, does he have the sized play guard.
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: Yeah, much smaller player than Jared Wilson. Jared Wilson does
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: have some guard in his background. He in college at Georgia.
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: He's a one year starter at center, but he started
- 1:27:45Speaker 3: the at Georgia as a guard and played a lot
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: of garden practice for the Bulldogs in practice, and so
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: he's cross trained at both positions. Again, I Wilson's natural
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: position is center, like, that's his long term position. And
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: I do want to talk about David Andrews here in
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: a second as well, and don't want to forget about that,
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: but that's his natural position.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: But there might be a case to be made.
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: And I know you've made the case of let's not
- 1:28:11Speaker 3: mess with it in terms of his development, which is
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: also a fair point, but there just might be a
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: really strong case to be made that for the twenty
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: twenty five Patriots, the best position for Jared Wilson has
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: left guard, so that they can have all five of
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: those guys together, you know, Campbell, Wilson, brad Berry on
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: when New Moses is probably on paper their best five
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: man combination, and the only way that happens is if
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: Wilson plays guard right. So that's the thought process there.
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: But I agree with you from a standpoint of you
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: messing with his development. I think that that can be
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: a fair point too, if that's the way it is.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: I still think if Wilson's good enough to play, is
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: good enough to play center? Yeah?
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: Yeah, So before we get back to the calls and emails,
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: I do want to talk about David Andrews, and I
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: don't want to forget, So let's do it now.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: David Andrews.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: The Patriots just tweeted that David Andrews is going to
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: have a retirement press conference on Monday. He's officially retiring
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: from the NFL after a great career here in New England.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: Two time Super Bowl champion. How many times is he
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: a captain?
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: Like?
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: Five?
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: Six, seven times team captain? I don't know six, I
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: have the exact number off the top of my head.
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: But represented the organization just as well as any player
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: possibly could. I would say in my time covering the team,
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: it's a it's a three horse race. But specifically, I guess,
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: just to me from the guys that I got to
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: know a little bit better, Devin mccordy and David Andrews
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: were the consonmate of consonmate pros that I've ever been around. Yeah,
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: Slater would be the third one, of course. And I
- 1:29:47Speaker 3: would put David Andrews in the same exact category as
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: I would put those two guys as just like not
- 1:29:53Speaker 3: only a perfect leader, but also just like that's a
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: football player, Yeah, like that's an nf fell offensive line.
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: And the toughness and the attitude that he brought. He
- 1:30:05Speaker 3: was always like a guy that would stand up for
- 1:30:07Speaker 3: any of the quarterbacks, whether it was Tom Brady or
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: Mac Jones or Bailey, Zappy or Drake or whoever Cam Newton,
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: he stood up for all of them. He was always
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: tough as nails. He was always clutch. He had big
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: blocks and big moments and big sequences as a Patriot,
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: obviously as a two times Super Bowl champion, there is
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: no doubt in my mind that David Andrews will wear
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: a red jacket some day. He will be a Patriot
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: Hall of Famer. One hundred percent can almost guarantee that
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: he will be a Patriot Hall of Famer. Will He
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: used to wait four years until you can get on
- 1:30:39Speaker 3: the ballot, and then there obviously could be a log
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: jam still going on as we've seen already with Edelman
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: and Viniti and Gronk coming up and other guys coming
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: up as well. But he, to me, will be a
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: red jacket guy not before long. And it'll be cool
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: to send him off on Monday and have that press conference.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I know some people roll their eyes at the
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: Patriot Way thing because the way the last few years
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: have gone. But you talk about what the Patriot Way
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: is at its core, and when we talked about that
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: when they were winning, right, the Patriot Way. What is
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: the Patriot It's David Andrews. David Andrews is the textbook
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Patriot Way. An undrafted guy, undersized, came in here, worked
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: his ass off, proved he could be a good football player, improved,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: took coaching, took accountability, became a leader, became a core
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: member of the team. I would make the joke when
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: they wore the throwbacks, like the guy in the helmet
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: snap in the football, that's David Andrews. Like everything that
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: their run was is embodied by David Andrews.
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: I give him a ton of credit. Obviously, the winning's
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: great Super Bowl rings are great. I give him even
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: more credit for how he handled himself the last few years. Yeah,
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: because I am sure and he's spoken about it has
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: been extremely difficult on him to go from a perennial
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Super Bowl contender to a team picking in the top five.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: That cannot be easy.
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: And he every time, you know, he was asked to
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: be available, he was available. He was one of the
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: first guys to the podium after all these losses recently.
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: He was always one of the first ones up there,
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: oftentimes still in like pads, like game pants and like
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: basically in uniform still and come up to the podium
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: and do his press conference, and always a stand up guy,
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: always answered questions, always took accountability for the team's performance.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: He was out of anybody that's been on this team
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: post Brady Like. He was pulling on the rope as
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: hard as you possibly could have pulled on the rope.
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: And unfortunately, over the last couple of years, just not
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: enough guys pulled on the rope in the right direction
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: with him. But it wasn't David Andrews Like. He was
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: not a problem. It was not him that wasn't putting
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: in the effort. It's a bummer that the career, his
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: career nine years in the league is ending on this note.
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: You know, injury last year more or less ended his career.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: It sounds like he's that a little bit on his
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: own podcast, so to have his career end like that, obviously,
- 1:33:05Speaker 3: the Patriots cut him earlier this offseason. The idea was
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: probably to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere.
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: I have no inside of information or whatsoever on whether
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: or not he even had any calls or had any opportunities.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: But he has opted to retire. So that retirement press
- 1:33:20Speaker 3: conference will be on Monday afternoon at three thirty. We
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: are expected to be out of OTAs that day and
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: then they're going to have the press conference after that,
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: So it's going to be a jam pack day. And
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: I do believe that Patriots dot Com will carry it live,
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: so you'll be able to watch it on Patriots dot
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: com and on Patriots YouTube as well if you want
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: to watch the press conference. So it should be Uh,
- 1:33:41Speaker 3: those are we've only covered a I've covered we did.
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: Devin mccordy's slater didn't do one, so I haven't done
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: a ton of them.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Did I don't do one? He did know because it's COVID.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: Oh he like zoomed with us. Yeah, and he did
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: in the fall or.
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: He did the video with him on the field where
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: he announced it and and you know the Foxborough Forever
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: stuff and all that. But I think Devin McCarty might
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: be the only guy that's done this like a true
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: retirement press conference. In this vance y I started covering.
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: Well that's another one too. You mentioned it, Edelman and
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: the fox Barrow Forever stuff. Yeah, one of the few
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: guys from the run who'd in, uh mccordy to one
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: of the few guys that didn't go elsewhere. Yeah, and
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: if you remember back he I think was it the
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: Ravens or the Dolphins that we were all sure like
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: he was gone.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Yeah, after the twenty twenty season. He misses the twenty
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: nineteen season with the I think it was with the
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: blood clot plays in twenty twenty, which nobody expected coming
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: off that blood clot in COVID. Yeah, played played that season,
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: and then in twenty two twenty he was a free agent.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: He was supposed to be the passing the torch to
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Ted Carris, and that was one of the big things
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: that offseason was you have a rookie and not that
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: anybody had anything against Ted Carris, Ted Krress a great player.
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: Ted Carris ended up having a great career for himself.
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: But I remember one of the talking points that offseason was,
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: all right, the probably gonna have a rookie quarterback coming in. Boy,
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: it'd be great to have a guy like David Andrews.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: It's going to be a shade when he leaves. And
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: then at like the eleventh hour, all of a sudden,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: David to the point where Ted Carriss had resigned to
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: like a starter contract. Everybody thought he's gonna to the center.
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: Then Andrews comes back and tells you what they thought
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: of him, that they had paid Ted Carris like a
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: starter and still took Andrews back. And Ted Carris ultimately
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: ends up starting that year because they moved the offensive
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: line around a bunch over the course of that season.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: But David Andrews wanted to come back. They wanted him
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: back that bad. I think the twenty twenty one off
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: season speaks a lot to what David Andrews meant to
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: this team.
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I just I can't stress enough just how impressed
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: I was with David Andrews post Brady, Like it's one
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: thing to be on board and be a great teammate
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: and be a great locker room guy when you're winning
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: and you're going to the Super Bowl every year, when
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: that turns in the way that it did, and the
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: team goes to picking in the top five and winning
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: four games a year, and he's still the same guy,
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: and he's still a stand up dude. And even being
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: around the team last year he was injured, like he
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: was out there at those practices when it was like
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: thirty degrees out the team had like four wins, three wins,
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: and he's out there trying to help his teammates get
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: better as a coach essentially. You know, he's done some podcasting,
- 1:36:13Speaker 3: He's done some stuff with you guys, or he's been
- 1:36:15Speaker 3: on the air a couple of times with you guys.
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: I don't know if media is his direction. I don't
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: know coaching his direction. I know he's talked in the
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: past about not being able to be too far away
- 1:36:27Speaker 3: from football, like he needs to be in football some way,
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: just to scratch the itch post playing career, is that media?
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: Is that going into coaching, We'll see it. But it
- 1:36:38Speaker 3: was a great career. Nine years, two time Super Bowl champion. Yeah,
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: David Andrews is one of my personal favorites. I had
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: some great stories too. Just a great guy, a great patriot.
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: All right, let's get back to the phones. Mark is
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: in Connecticut. What's up, Mark?
- 1:36:53Speaker 9: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call as always a well.
- 1:36:56Speaker 9: I love the rant that you guys just went on
- 1:36:57Speaker 9: about David Andrews. I mean, he's just a body, like
- 1:37:00Speaker 9: Alex was saying, the Patriot way, first guy to the
- 1:37:03Speaker 9: podium every time. Just a true professional and I love
- 1:37:07Speaker 9: him absolutely. The other couple of things real quick, is
- 1:37:12Speaker 9: Jalen Folk do you think he's going to turn into
- 1:37:15Speaker 9: a Taekwon Thorarton, you know, Nikuil Harry, Like, is he
- 1:37:18Speaker 9: still nursing an injury right now?
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: Is he practicing?
- 1:37:22Speaker 9: I'm just worried that, you know, it's another second round
- 1:37:25Speaker 9: bust out of him. And then the other thing is
- 1:37:27Speaker 9: I love the fact that Kendrick Warren is, you know,
- 1:37:30Speaker 9: reviving his career.
- 1:37:31Speaker 8: Again with Josh McDonalds because we all know he.
- 1:37:33Speaker 9: He knows the system well and I'm really rooting for him.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, thanks for the call. Mark.
- 1:37:38Speaker 3: So, Jalen Polk is we mentioned this earlier in the show,
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: but Jempo's here, He's participating limitedly limitedly that word, he's limited.
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: He is limited in these practices and during positional drills,
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: during individuals and things like that, he's participating. But then
- 1:37:56Speaker 3: when they go to team, when they go to eleven
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: on eleven, he's doing routes on air on the side
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: field while everybody else is doing team. So he's not
- 1:38:04Speaker 3: fully cleared yet for team. It doesn't seem like he
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: is coming off that injury. I really confirmed this, but
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: I believe it was a shoulder right, that sounds right.
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: At the end of last year, he ended the year
- 1:38:15Speaker 3: actually on IR now is one game he missed with eighteen.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: He missed one game on injured reserves shoulder injury.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: Shoulder injury. So I assume that he had some sort
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: of surgery or something like that on that.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: He was going to sling some of those offseason videos. Yeah,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: so he's coming back from that in terms of bust.
- 1:38:33Speaker 6: Uh. You know.
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: The tough thing about Jalen Polk, I don't want to
- 1:38:37Speaker 3: write anybody off, and I certainly don't want to write
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: off a guy who's going into year two after a
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: year one was really just not a great setup for
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: a rookie receiver. Now with that being said, there is
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: not a lot of history of a receiver putting up,
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: was it eleven catches, twelve catches, twelve Yeah, something like that,
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: and then going on and blossoming into a great receiver,
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: even a good receiver.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: There's just not touchdowns.
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: There's just not a lot of like that could be
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: one game, right, You're right like that, there's just not
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: a lot of precedent for that in terms of it
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: panning out. Now, maybe there's a little bit more precedent
- 1:39:17Speaker 3: for him then going on to just being an NFL player,
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: Like a guy that's contributed can contribute, but in terms
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: of him being like a big time contributor or an
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: impact player. I'm not ready to close the book because
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: I wouldn't. I wouldn't close the book on any player
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: that's his youngest, Jalen Polk. But uh, we're we're in
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: dire times, like we're we're pretty unrealistically projecting forward. If
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: we're thinking that he's going to go on and be
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: like a high impact receiver in the NFL based off
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: of his rookie season, the two things working for him
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: one horrible setup for any rookie receiver last year, like
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: that offense. Uh, the coaching staff, all of that just
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: wasn't set up for success, and they admitted it as much. Yeah,
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: Elly Wolfs submitted as much. The other thing that I
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: think is working for him is that, for better or worse,
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: a lot of his struggles as a rookie were mental,
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: I think more than physical.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: Once he didn't get that heel in against Miami in
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: Week five, he just kind of forgot how to play
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: football for a little while there. He was just not playable,
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: Like it was just a mental hurdle that he was
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: not able to overcome. So hopefully with an offseason, you know,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: the more time that's passed from that, like maybe he
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: can get out of his own head a little bit
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: about all these different things. I mean, you hope that
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: kind of the reset is what he needs. And a
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: lot of it was mental last year. But it's just
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: it's so tough to turn around the fact that he
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: is limited right now, like he's playing catchup. He's already
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: playing ketchup. But then the fact that he's behind in
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: terms of this injury and he's not out there with
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: everybody else makes it even tougher. So you hope he's
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: good to go by the start of camp and he
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: can really compete, but he's just there's so many areas
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: in which again he's playing catch up. Yeah.
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: Absolutely, all right, let's get to some of these emails.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: We have a couple good ones here. So this is
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: a good one here from Stevie Steve Steve, so I'm
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: assuming his name is just Steve, so it goes Steve.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: He asks, how do we think that the Rabel defense
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: will defend the tight ends, especially week one looking ahead
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: to brock Bauers in Week one with the Raiders. It's
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: a good question because they had they had a specific
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: like tight end stopper role in the Belichick style defense
- 1:41:28Speaker 3: where you know, whether it was Kyle Duggar or Patrick
- 1:41:32Speaker 3: Chung and his like career renaissance second, you know, life
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: there in his career, whatever the case may be, that
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: for a long time, it was that like cover safety
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: role that I played man to man on tight ends
- 1:41:43Speaker 3: for the Titans defenses. With Rabel, like they were a
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: little bit more zone heavy, a little less man to man,
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: so you know, they were a little bit more in
- 1:41:50Speaker 3: terms of zone distribution, Like that's how they would cover
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: tight ends. Right, you just have guys bodies in the middle,
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: of the field and zoning guys off and things like that.
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: I still feel like we've seen quite a bit of
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: manton Man coverage as you would expect with Gonzo and
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: Carlon Davis and the players the Patriots may have, So
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't be surprised if it looks similar and you
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: have some of those cover safeties again, whether it's you know,
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: a dugger Craig Woodson potentially competing for a role like that,
- 1:42:17Speaker 3: Alex Austin, maybe you know as like an inside corner,
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: like a slot corner. But you know, Bowers is like
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: more of like a flex receiver than he is. He's
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: more of a slot receiver than he is like a
- 1:42:28Speaker 3: true tight end. So maybe like that they cover him
- 1:42:30Speaker 3: in Week one with a corner, you know, if you
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: want to get specific to Brock Bowers. But I think
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: it's going to be pretty similar based off of what
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: we've seen. Now we've seen very little, but that's where
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: I'm at with that.
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, Craig Woodson probably makes most sense as
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: the tight end stopper in general. Do you want to
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: throw Brock Bowers at him in his first NFL game?
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: That might be where they go Austin or they go
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: with Peppers, and it'll probably be multiple I mean, he's
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: their top receiver. He'll be double teamed and he'll get
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: a lot of attention. But I think ideally Craig Woodson
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: slots into that role.
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, and I you know, he did a
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: little bit in college. Now, he had his ups and
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: downs in that role in college. I remember Gats in
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: the Syracuse tight end he had a game against him.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Well, Gats is another one of these guys. He was
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: a wide receiver when he entered college.
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: Yeah, game, you had a couple of big catches against
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: Craig woods And I'm still weary if that's really a
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: strength of his game. But in terms of getting on
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: the field and like give the opportunities that might be
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: there for Craig woods and it feels like those opportunities
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: are better suited. You know, Duggar and Peppers are going
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: to be Duggar and Peppers. They're going to play their roles,
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: they're going to be starters, they are going to be
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: full time players. So if he's going to get on
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: the field, it's going to be you know, potentially could
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: be him being able to lock down tight ends it's
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: like either him being able to lockdown tight ends or
- 1:43:43Speaker 3: him playing center field, Like those are the two ways
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: that he really has a path on the field. All right,
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: this is a question from that one Boston fan. He
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: has a Twitter account. I 't know if he's getting
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: his Twitter account a little bit, but he asks, uh,
- 1:43:55Speaker 3: you know how big how I guess to rephrase this,
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: how uh frequently with the Patriots use trick place on
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: offense this year. I think it is a good question
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: because McDaniels has always been a trick he loves trick place.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Morton last year. I mean, I don't know, I don't
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: know if I can give you a percentage won a
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: game when every other game something like that, But they'll
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: they'll be a feature.
- 1:44:18Speaker 3: Yeah, there's there's no doubt about it. Like he's a
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: big trick play guy. Yeah, whether it's I don't know.
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: I call a flea flicker a trick play. I don't
- 1:44:28Speaker 3: know if it's truly a trick play. It's kind of
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: maybe in a slightly different.
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: Box, but I think it's a trick It's a common
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: trick play, but it's a trick play.
- 1:44:36Speaker 3: So he's a big flea flicker guy. Yeah, he's a
- 1:44:38Speaker 3: big double pass guy. Yeah, I mean the pass the
- 1:44:41Speaker 3: ball out to the receiver to then throw back to
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: the back and the screen in the flat is like
- 1:44:46Speaker 3: a McDaniel's trick play staple.
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you pull you screen out right, you pull the
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: offensive line out left, and the wide receivers back left.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Who is the throwing wide receiver now though, So Kendrick
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: Bourne's done a little bit, A little bit. I don't
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: know though, if there's none of them really have quarterback backgrounds.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: Do they bowlk Baker? Oh, Kyle Williams in high school? Yeah,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: I think was a quarterback. So maybe it's Kyle Williams
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: or they gonna have a rook you mas throwing the ball.
- 1:45:12Speaker 3: And I know we're not really supposed to say this,
- 1:45:14Speaker 3: but not this in practice this year, but in the
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: past Hunter Henry's throwing some passes in practice.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: Now most of the time is goofing off. But like
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: those Arkansas tight ends, remember a j Jerby, Maybe he's
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: got a little bit of an arm. I don't know.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Maybe that's tougher to do though, because they rarely put him. Well,
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: maybe it'll be different with Josh McDaniels. Yeah, how much
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: should Henry line up out wide into twenty twenty one,
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: because not a ton they're gonna know if Hunter Henry's
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: lined up on the boundary, Hey, something's coming. Yeah, usually
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: it's you know, they all the Patriots run place to
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: set it up, and maybe that's something we see more
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: than this.
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: Yeah, So all their double passes in the past, for
- 1:45:47Speaker 3: the most part, I shouldn't say all. It's just off
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: the top of my head. The ones that I remember,
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: they used to use Gronk as like a blocker, like
- 1:45:56Speaker 3: as like a personal protector basically for the thrower. So
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: they put the Edelman outside, they put Gronk on the
- 1:46:01Speaker 3: line of scrimmage. Edelman would like take a five steps
- 1:46:05Speaker 3: back to how to be a backwards pass, and then
- 1:46:07Speaker 3: Gronk would literally pass it in front of him and
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: just stand in front of him. You watch the touchdown
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: passa Danny A. Mondola against Baltimore in the playoffs. Gronk
- 1:46:15Speaker 3: is the one that is basically playing left tackle for
- 1:46:18Speaker 3: Julian Edelman, so most of the time that's a tight end.
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: So maybe that would more be Hunter Henry's role.
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: They actually throwing the pator Henry fifty eight uh snaps
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: in the out wide. Now he did play a lot
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: in the slot. It's actually career high slot usage for
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: him in twenty twenty one. So yeah, on the Baltimore win,
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: your point Edelman lines up out wide. Yeah, but he
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: actually motions in and by the time the ball snapped,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: he's a slot receiver. So yep, a little short.
- 1:46:42Speaker 3: Motion and then the other So they like that play,
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: right obviously double true double pass.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: Like here, I'm sorry, I just like sneezed it in
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: the mic. I thought I muted my mic. I hit
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: pause on the computer. I'm so out of it. So
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: did that earlier today too, and I was thinking like, man,
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: I hope I don't do that and hit pause on
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: the computer, thinking I think everybody will forgive you. It's
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: a it's gross.
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: So you had the the Edelman double pass, like back
- 1:47:06Speaker 3: to the to the screen side, right, So you have
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: like the that's the line of scrimmage play where they
- 1:47:12Speaker 3: throw it out to Edelman and then they throw the
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: screen across. Then they also have like just a straight
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: double pass like Damn and Dola in twenty fourteen, Like
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: that's just a out to the receiver up the field
- 1:47:22Speaker 3: double pass. Then the other thing that they built in
- 1:47:26Speaker 3: to the screen one is that they would have the
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: receiver on the screen side run a deep over and
- 1:47:31Speaker 3: he actually hit Philip dor Set for a touchdown in
- 1:47:34Speaker 3: Philadelphia on the downfield throw.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: Was that the one Dorset got hurt.
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: I don't I don't know if he got hurt, but
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: he kind of touchdown. It was the only touchdown of
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: the game for the either two and it was an
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: Edelman touchdown pass to Philip dor Set and McDaniels. Josh
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: did a podcast with Julian Edelman. It must have been
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: like Games with Names or one of the Edelman shows,
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: and they talked about it, and I guess, like that
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: route is just a clear out to clear out that
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: side and it's really not an option, like it's you're
- 1:48:02Speaker 3: not supposed to throw it. The only time you're supposed
- 1:48:05Speaker 3: to throw it is if he's like wide open, like
- 1:48:07Speaker 3: there's like literally nobody covers him and he's wide open.
- 1:48:10Speaker 3: But this wasn't that, Like this was like a throw,
- 1:48:13Speaker 3: like he threw the ball to Phillip dor Set like
- 1:48:15Speaker 3: a quarterback would. And Julian Edelman said that he remembered
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: the night before the game they had to walk through
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: yea and he jokingly threw the he jokingly through the
- 1:48:27Speaker 3: pass the door set and McDaniels was like, you better
- 1:48:30Speaker 3: not do that in the game, And then he did
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: it in the game the next day and I and
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: I think the quote was like you maverick or something
- 1:48:39Speaker 3: like that, like and McDaniels was pissed that he actually
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: made the throw, but it was for a touchdown, So
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: can't be two pissed you're a touchdown only touch of that.
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: Again, that was a rock fight that game. That game
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: was brutal.
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: This is a good catch twenty two question here to
- 1:48:52Speaker 3: wrap it up on because this could take us a
- 1:48:54Speaker 3: few minutes to get there. So this is a very
- 1:48:57Speaker 3: long email from Robert, very well thought out Robert. I.
- 1:48:59Speaker 3: I apologize that I can't read the whole email, but
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: I will summarize. So the summarization of this email is
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: about a concept that you and I have kicked around
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: many times on the show about an NFL developmental league
- 1:49:14Speaker 3: and having some way in the off season, yes to
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: allow NFL players to play in the spring leagues as
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: a way to develop their skin, a whole plan for
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: those So the UFL is going on right now, correct.
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: Their final week in the regular season, is this week
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: this weekend?
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: It's the ratings have been awful, if I'm not mistaken,
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: like no one cares.
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: Not as bad as some of the other spring leagues.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: But it's not like it's not the NFL. Not a
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: ton of people are watching. No.
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: So the way that this is mutually benefited, there's obvious
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: benefits for a league like the UFL to bring in
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: NFL players because that would then get us sick goose
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: to watch right well, and.
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: It becomes it becomes part of following your team because
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: if the Patriot to have a player assigned there, you
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: want to see what he's gonna do. Is he gonna
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: make a push with the roster, especially the quarterbacks. I'll
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: say this about the UFL, like it's not as bad
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: as a whole. The football is not as bad as
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: people make it out to be. The court, there's not
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: nearly enough quarterbacks, so the poor quarterback play brings everybody
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: else down. The number of like overthrows or bad reads
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: or guys just holding the ball, leading the sacks, miss
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: picking up protections. If the quarterback play was better, the
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: league as a whole would be a lot better.
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: So that being said, the concept that we've always kicked around.
- 1:50:35Speaker 3: And let's be clear, this is not Drake may going
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: to play in the springley. This is I know he's
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: not on the team anymore, but this is Joe Milton
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: going to play in this even he might be astra
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: like I too good.
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it would be like a guy who finished it
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: probably would be a guy who finished the pass season,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: like on the practice squad or not on a ringar
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: guy like a future contract guy. Well, he's a rookie,
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: so that's different. I'll get to that in a second. Yeah,
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: but you probably would need some So I think the
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: probably something written into the contract where the player would
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: have to agree to it that like, hey, we are
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: allowed to ask you to go play in this league.
- 1:51:09Speaker 3: So there's a lot of benefits from obviously the spring
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: league side in terms of money and revenue, but the
- 1:51:15Speaker 3: other the real advantage I think for NFL teams for
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: this is that once you get into the season, especially,
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: there's just not a ton of reps for these backup rights,
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: and especially at positions that are very technique based, like
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: offensive line. Everybody talks about how the offensive line play
- 1:51:35Speaker 3: around the league stinks, and it's a developmental issue. It's
- 1:51:39Speaker 3: a pipeline issue, and it's just across the league.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: Teams are having trouble finding enough talent on the offensive line. Now,
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: I'm not suggesting that this would solve all your problems,
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: but it does. It will, in theory, increase the talent
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: level of the offensive line, the pool around the league,
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: and the floor of the talent around the league if
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: you would allow and we're talking about practice squad guys
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: and maybe on rare, rare exceptions, like back end of
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: the roster guys that didn't play at all in the
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: NFL and we're like healthy scratches all the time or
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: whatever the case may be the year before. But this
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: allowing that to happen, I think would be huge for quarterbacks.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: It'd be huge for linemen. Yeah, and other positions too.
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: You know, there are always benefits to getting live reps.
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: You can't replicate live reps, and especially once you get
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: into the season, it's really difficult to replicate live reps
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: for backups because they just are all the starters are
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: repping all the time and these practices and there's not
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: a lot of contact to begin with. A lot of
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: these practice especially late in the season, aren't even full
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: contact practices anymore because guys are banged up and stuff
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: like that, so the coaches pull back. So this would
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: allow you know, good examples in the past that we've had,
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: you know are like guys like a Trey Nixon, right,
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: who's like trying to make the Patriots team a year
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: in and year out, can't break through. If he goes
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: to the UFL and plays live football in the spring,
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: does that put him in a better position to potentially
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: make the Patriots roster in the summer, And then it's
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: more content, which the NFL is all about, because now
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: we're following this thing and we're talking about Trey Nixon. Hey,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: Trey Nixon had eight hundred yards in ten games in
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: the UFL, Like should we be noticing that? So I
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: would take it to another level. I think the spring league.
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: First of all, you'd have to shift it. This is
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: my idea. You don't do it this time of year.
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: It goes from the week after the Super Bowl to
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: a couple of weeks before the draft. That's what I
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: would run. And you have three groups of players street
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: free agents, street free agents, So these are just guys
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: that don't have a team they're veterans, they can play.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: The second group is players assigned by NFL teams, and
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: you would figure out what qualifies a player who can
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: be assigned and how they'd get split up on the
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: different teams. You could also, by the way, do that
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: with coaches and maybe give some young coaches experience. But
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: you know, maybe NFL teams want their players to play
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: for a certain coach, they send him to a certain team,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: or you send a guy close to where he played
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: college because that's good for the Development League because they'll
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: get some groups. And then the third group you make
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: for certain players coming out of college, you have to
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: declare for the draft. You can't do this and go
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: back to school, but you make it an alternative to
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl Combine circuit. Okay, so a young guy
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: like you wouldn't have a top pick doing this, right,
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: But a guy that's on the fringe, so Ben wold
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: Ridge would be a great example of this undrafted player
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: doesn't have a ton of tape. What's the combine really
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: going to do for him? He didn't get invites to
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: the Senior BOWLD. No, he's going to go play in
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: this league and now we get to watch him, And
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: imagine if especially there aren't some bigger name quarterbacks that
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: aren't looked at looked at. It's like draftable guys. Perfect
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: example of this, dju Ungalle Yeah, right, was nothing was
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: happening for him at the combine. He wasn't gonna raise
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: his stock. If he go plays and plays in this
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: league and he lights it up, should he be drafted?
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: How high's he going to be drafted? Blah blah blah,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: something like that. Right, They ultimately went in the first round,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: but guys like Johnny Manziel and Tim tebow Wright would
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: have would have been things for this. So I think
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: they should do that. And then that's why you have
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: to have the league end before the draft. And there
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: is some precedence for this. Uh was it? Uh? Stickers?
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: I forget his first name. The corner Quantes Stiggers. Oh yea, yeah,
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: who was in the draft last year. Yeah, he didn't
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: play college football. He was supposed to play college football
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: and the pandemic captain and he had some stuff in
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: his personal life and he dropped out and he ended
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: up signing with the CFL, and he didn't do really
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: much of the offseason program or the pre draft process.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: He was just in the CFL and the Jets drafted him. Yeah, so,
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: and I think he actually played like a good amount
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: last year, so you could you you there is some
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: precedent and there was another corner two a few years
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: ago did this who got drafted. I think of the
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: the XFL at the time you create, you let college
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: guys play in this league to try to up their
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: draft stock who maybe need a little bit more of
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: the showcase. It's nothing against the Senior Bowl, but Senior
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: bowls limited reps, and there's a lot of good players
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: there and it's just one game in three days of practice.
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: Some guys might need a whole season. You give those
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: guys an opportunity to maybe show what they can do
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: with a little more room.
- 1:56:15Speaker 3: I just think there's a lot of advantages from the
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: live rep aspect, especially for offensive lineman. I'll go back there, like,
- 1:56:22Speaker 3: if you want to improve the talent of the offensive
- 1:56:25Speaker 3: line around the NFL, you're not going to do that
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: with guys that are blocking against air or against like
- 1:56:32Speaker 3: you know, in these non padded practices and things like that.
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: They need live reps.
- 1:56:36Speaker 3: They need real reps in games, and you can get
- 1:56:39Speaker 3: those in these types of spring leaves. Now the obvious
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: question would then be like injury concern, and I think
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: to that point, and this happens with rookies that don't
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: that are unsigned, You sign a waiver and basically you
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: get treated like you're on injured reserve. You get placed
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: on injured reserve by your NFL team. The waiver that
- 1:56:59Speaker 3: you sign says that you will be compensated like you
- 1:57:02Speaker 3: would be if you were on injured preserve during the
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: NFL season, And it's basically just an extension of that
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: and that way there if you know, I hope not,
- 1:57:10Speaker 3: but like if Eft and Chisholm were to go do
- 1:57:12Speaker 3: this next year and he were to get seriously hurt,
- 1:57:15Speaker 3: hopefully not if that ever happens, but if it did,
- 1:57:18Speaker 3: then he would be covered, you know, in terms of compensation,
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: so it wouldn't be like out of a job.
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: On the same line, and Chishm would have been the
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: guy that could have gotten played in the league this
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: year and probably would have gotten drafted if he could
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: showcase against some professional talent. The guys you taught were
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: talking about assigning to this league. Yeah, you need to
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: do it if you want a chance to make the team.
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: So it's not, well, I don't want to get hurt
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: and risk my contract. Right, you don't do it, You're
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: probably not gonna have an NFL contract.
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: Yeah, like the couple, you know, a lot of them
- 1:57:44Speaker 3: are rookies that I'm thinking of off the top of
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: my head.
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: But like even like a guy like like.
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: Tyres Robinson who we talked about today, got some run
- 1:57:50Speaker 3: at at left guard. Like if he had been able
- 1:57:53Speaker 3: to play in the Spring League up until this point,
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: like maybe he would have a like I wouldn't be
- 1:57:59Speaker 3: dismissing it.
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: Maybe he would have a real show. So I'll give
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: you another one. Vaderian Low. The Patriots trade for Vaderian
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: Low during the twenty twenty three season. He doesn't play
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: a ton. Then they go back last off. He's saying, Okay,
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: this guy might be our starting left tackle. You assigned
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: him to the league, and you would have some sort
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: of deal with the coach that, hey, you were assigning
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: him to you as a left tackle. You're going to
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: play him at left tackle. That's who want him to develop.
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: And he could have gotten a bunch of left tackle reps.
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: Chookes a core for same thing. A guy that signed
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: for not a lot of money. Now would he have
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: gone through with it, I don't know. But like in theory,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: all right, this guy's the right tackle. We need to
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: make get reps at left right. We're going to assign him,
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: and you tell the coach in that league like you're
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: playing him at left and the league would agree to
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: it because they're getting these players they wouldn't otherwise get.
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: So we have to wrap. But I want to last
- 1:58:44Speaker 3: point on this. I think the other the last frontier
- 1:58:47Speaker 3: for this, and you mentioned it briefly, if you can
- 1:58:50Speaker 3: find a way that let's just say it's, uh, you
- 1:58:54Speaker 3: know how many teams are in the NFL right now?
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: Eight? I think the rumor is that it might be
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: nine or ten next year.
- 1:59:00Speaker 3: So it's a little bit much in terms of this
- 1:59:02Speaker 3: just in general, if you say, like these two teams
- 1:59:06Speaker 3: are running like a Shanahan West Coast, and these two
- 1:59:09Speaker 3: teams are running like a McDaniel's EP system, like you know,
- 1:59:14Speaker 3: old school McDaniels, and then these couple of teams are
- 1:59:17Speaker 3: running like the Andy Reid version of the West Coast,
- 1:59:20Speaker 3: like the West Coast Spread or the West Coast College
- 1:59:22Speaker 3: and that way there when you start in the same
- 1:59:24Speaker 3: thing on defense, like that way there when you started
- 1:59:26Speaker 3: signing the players, like the Patriots can send their guys
- 1:59:30Speaker 3: to like the EP team, and then you know, the
- 1:59:32Speaker 3: Miami Dolphins can send their guys to the West Coast team.
- 1:59:36Speaker 3: And then you're running the system and running the scheme
- 1:59:38Speaker 3: with the verbiage and all that stuff, like those players
- 1:59:41Speaker 3: are that.
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: Going to be running probably lined I don't know that
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: it would be that formalized, but like you're gonna have
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: if if the NFL. So there's two ways you go
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: about this. I think if I remember correct, in the
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: NFL Europe, there was like pre set these NFL teams
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: are linked with this europe team. Yeah, so maybe they
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: do that. But if you're just choosing where you send players,
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: NFL teams and NFL coaches are probably gonna have relationships
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: with a lot of these coaches and they're gonna be
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: able to say, I want my going to this team
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: because I know that he's going to get like the
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: coaching that I wanted to get. Yeah. Yeah, so they
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: actually it's a good collection of coaches. I'm trying to
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: pull the list up. I think that we have this
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: concept NAIL.
- 2:00:22Speaker 3: We've been talking about this for like five years. We
- 2:00:25Speaker 3: have this concept nailed down. So Roger Goodell UFL commissioner,
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: if you want us to come, he's the commissioner of
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: the league.
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: Or is he just like the figurehead of he owns it.
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: Oh that's a little different. I feel like that kind
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: of makes him the commissioner.
- 2:00:40Speaker 3: If you want two people that have thought more about
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: this than anybody else. The two of us have this nails, like,
- 2:00:45Speaker 3: we know exactly what needs to be done, we know
- 2:00:48Speaker 3: exactly how to get there. Maybe we need some suits,
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: some lawyers to come in and help us, like figure
- 2:00:53Speaker 3: out the injury settlements and all that good stuff. But
- 2:00:55Speaker 3: we have this concept nailed so we're available. We will
- 2:00:59Speaker 3: come in and we will tell you and we will
- 2:01:01Speaker 3: lay you, lay it out for you and tell you
- 2:01:03Speaker 3: exactly how this can be done. And to a point
- 2:01:07Speaker 3: you made earlier, we are the sickos that on a
- 2:01:11Speaker 3: random day in March when the Spring League is going
- 2:01:14Speaker 3: on and a Patriot player that was assigned to a team,
- 2:01:18Speaker 3: we will we will talk about it, we will write
- 2:01:20Speaker 3: about it.
- 2:01:21Speaker 6: We will.
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: Like in the draft in it. By the way, they
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: don't there is no commissioner. Oh best I can find. Okay, well,
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: we're available. The Rock, we are available. I forget he
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: has a business partner there. I forget her name, but
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: it's it's two people, all right. So that does it
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: for this week's show, we'll be back. President is a
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: guy named Russ Brandon.
- 2:01:41Speaker 3: There, come on, Russ, come on, Dwayne the Rock Johnson,
- 2:01:45Speaker 3: we are ready to go here next week, we'll be
- 2:01:48Speaker 3: back on Wednesday. We'll be back to our normal time
- 2:01:51Speaker 3: at noon. No practice that day, so we will be
- 2:01:54Speaker 3: back at noon and we will talk about Monday's practice.
- 2:01:57Speaker 3: We'll talk about David Andrews' retirements ceremony. We'll touch on
- 2:02:02Speaker 3: Mini Camp, which is not next week, but it's the
- 2:02:04Speaker 3: following week, and then that's a wrap on the off
- 2:02:06Speaker 3: season program, and then we go I'll go on vacation
- 2:02:09Speaker 3: for the summer until training camp. So that's a schedule
- 2:02:11Speaker 3: for the next couple of weeks. We'll have you covered
- 2:02:14Speaker 3: throughout all these OTAs in Mini camp right here on
- 2:02:16Speaker 3: Patriots Catch twenty two for Alex Barth.
