- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here and it is
- 0:15February already. Can you believe it?
- 0:16It's the second day of the second month of this year, 2026.
- 0:20And it's great to have your company this year, which is
- 0:23going to look pretty different from last year for me.
- 0:27Yesterday it was announced that I am, after 10 years, leaving my
- 0:33role as the leader of the pastoral care department at my
- 0:36hospital and I'll be going back into parish ministry.
- 0:40Yes, I will be a minister at Saint Clements, where I have
- 0:44been for the last 10 years. It's a wonderful place, a place
- 0:48that's been our home and now a place that I get to be a part of
- 0:51the ministry team there so that it's really exciting.
- 0:53That happens at the start of March.
- 0:56So what's going on for me? And I just thought I'd let you
- 1:01know, but we are not here to hear about me.
- 1:04We are here to hear about Jesus because we are in the midst of
- 1:07the end of this story of Jesus earthly ministry.
- 1:10Jesus has been taken into custody and Peter has just
- 1:14denied his Lord three times. And we are about to reach Good
- 1:19Friday. And so we just come before you,
- 1:22Holy Spirit, and we pray that you, through this reading, teach
- 1:27us more about you and your love and your character so that we
- 1:33can know you more and love you more.
- 1:37All right, friends, prepare yourselves.
- 1:39Let us read together. Luke chapter 23.
- 1:53Then the entire council took Jesus to pilot the Roman
- 1:57governor. They began to state their case.
- 2:00This man has been leading up people astray by telling them
- 2:03not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming
- 2:06he is the Messiah, a king. So Pilate asked him, Are you the
- 2:11king of the Jews? Jesus replied, You have said it.
- 2:18Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and
- 2:20said, I find nothing wrong with this man.
- 2:25Then they became insistent. But he is causing riots by his
- 2:29teaching wherever he goes, all over Judea, from Galilee to
- 2:33Jerusalem. Oh, he is a Galilean, Pilot
- 2:37asked when they said that he was.
- 2:40Pilot sent him to Herod Antipas because Galilee was under
- 2:44Herod's jurisdiction and Herod happened to be in Jerusalem at
- 2:48the time. Herod was delighted at the
- 2:51opportunity to see Jesus because he had heard about him and had
- 2:55been hoping for a long time to see him perform a miracle.
- 2:58He asked Jesus question after question, but Jesus refused to
- 3:03answer. Meanwhile, the leading priests
- 3:06and the teachers of religious law stood there shouting their
- 3:08accusations. Then Herod and his soldiers
- 3:12began mocking and ridiculing Jesus.
- 3:15Finally they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
- 3:20Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, became friends
- 3:24that day. Then Pilate called together the
- 3:28leading priests and other religious leaders, along with
- 3:31the people, and he announced his verdict.
- 3:34You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a
- 3:38revolt. I have examined him thoroughly
- 3:41on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
- 3:46Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to
- 3:49us. Nothing this man has done calls
- 3:52for the death penalty. So I will have him flogged and
- 3:56then I will release him. Then a mighty roar rose from the
- 4:01crowd and with one voice they shouted, Kill him and release
- 4:05Barabbas to us. Barabbas was imprisoned for
- 4:09taking part in an insurrection in Jerusalem against the
- 4:11government and for murder. Pilot argued with them because
- 4:17he wanted to release Jesus, but they kept shouting crucify him,
- 4:22crucify him. For the third time he demanded
- 4:26why? What crime has he committed?
- 4:30I have found no reason to sentence him to death.
- 4:34So I will have him flogged, and then I will release him.
- 4:39But the mob shouted louder and louder, demanding that Jesus be
- 4:42crucified, and their voices prevailed.
- 4:45So Pilate sentenced Jesus to die as they demanded.
- 4:50As they had requested, He released Barabbas, the man
- 4:53imprisoned for insurrection and murder.
- 4:56But he turned Jesus over to them to do as they wished.
- 5:01As they led Jesus away, a man named Simon who was from Cyrene,
- 5:06happened to be coming in from the countryside.
- 5:08The soldiers seized him and put the cross on him and made him
- 5:11carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd trailed behind,
- 5:16including many grief stricken women.
- 5:18But Jesus turned and said to them, Daughters of Jerusalem,
- 5:22don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your
- 5:26children. For the days are coming when
- 5:28they will say, fortunate indeed are the women who are childless,
- 5:33the wombs that have not borne a child, and the breasts that have
- 5:36never nursed. People will beg the mountains
- 5:39fall on us, and plead with the hills bury us.
- 5:44For if these things are done when the tree is green, what
- 5:47will happen when it is dry? Two others, both criminals, were
- 5:53led out to be executed with him. When they came to a place called
- 5:57the Skull, they nailed him to the cross.
- 6:01And the criminals were also crucified, one on his right and
- 6:04one on his left. Jesus said, Father, forgive
- 6:09them, for they don't know what they are doing.
- 6:13And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.
- 6:17The crowd watched and the leaders scoffed.
- 6:20He saved others, they said. Let him save himself, if he is
- 6:24really God's Messiah, the Chosen One.
- 6:27The soldiers mocked him too, by offering him a drink of sour
- 6:30wine. They called out to him.
- 6:33If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.
- 6:37The sign was fastened above him with these words.
- 6:40This is the king of the Jews. One of the criminals hanging
- 6:46beside him scoffed. So you're the Messiah, are you?
- 6:50Prove it by saving yourself and us too while you're at it.
- 6:54But the other criminal protested.
- 6:56Don't you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?
- 7:01We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn't done
- 7:05anything wrong. And he said, Jesus, Remember Me
- 7:10when you come into your Kingdom. And Jesus replied, I assure you
- 7:16today you will be with me in paradise.
- 7:20By this time it was about noon and darkness fell across the
- 7:24whole land until 3:00. The light from the sun was gone,
- 7:29and suddenly the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn
- 7:33down the middle. Then Jesus shouted, Father, I
- 7:38entrust my spirit into your hands.
- 7:41Amid those words, he breathed his last.
- 7:45When the Roman officer overseeing the execution saw
- 7:48what had happened, he worshipped God and said, surely this man
- 7:53was innocent. And when all the crowd that came
- 7:57to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in
- 8:00deep sorrow. But Jesus friends, including the
- 8:04women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance
- 8:07watching. Now there was a good and
- 8:11righteous man there named Joseph.
- 8:13He was a member of the Jewish High Council, but he had not
- 8:16agreed with the decision and actions of the other religious
- 8:19leaders. He was from the town of
- 8:21Arimathea in Judea, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God
- 8:25to come. He went to Pilate and asked for
- 8:28Jesus body. Then they took the body down
- 8:31from the cross and wrapped it in a long sheet of linen cloth and
- 8:36laid it in a new tomb that had been carved out of rock.
- 8:40This was done late on Friday afternoon, the day of
- 8:43preparation, as the Sabbath was about to begin.
- 8:48As his body was taken away, the women from Galilee followed and
- 8:52saw the tomb where his body was placed.
- 8:56Then they went home and prepared spices and ointments to anoint
- 8:59his body. But by the time they were
- 9:02finished, the Sabbath had begun, so they rested as required by
- 9:06the law. Jesus, thank you for all that
- 9:18you have done for us, for your most sacrificial love that you
- 9:24lavish on us, and the way that even in the midst of this
- 9:29darkest hour before you, your heart is filled with compassion
- 9:35and forgiveness. Our Lord, when we find ourselves
- 9:40backed into a corner having our worst day, it is hard for us to
- 9:45find our best selves. But here you are, and here we
- 9:50see your truest colours, your truest character, which is one
- 9:55of love and compassion when all the chips are down.
- 10:01And thank you that this love and compassion you gift us, and we
- 10:07see that not just with your words, but hear so clearly in
- 10:11your actions of love and compassion for us.
- 10:15Ah, you are wonderful. And we're so grateful for all
- 10:18that you have done for us and all that you continue to do for
- 10:22us. And all that you have won for us
- 10:25is freedom, this forgiveness, this life with you forever.
- 10:31You're the best and we love you. And we pray all of this in your
- 10:34saving name, Jesus, Amen.
