- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, It's Lisa Fox.
- 0:01Speaker 2: There's something really cool happening at grocery outlet bargain market
- 0:04Speaker 2: stores right now.
- 0:05Speaker 1: To help feed people in need, and you can be
- 0:08Speaker 1: a part of it. You can help.
- 0:09Speaker 2: It's easy, it's affordable, and it feels good to give back.
- 0:12Speaker 2: It's their Sixteenthdaniel Independence from Hunger Food Drive. We're stopping
- 0:16Speaker 2: by your local store or by donating online, you can
- 0:18Speaker 2: help make a huge difference.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's happening now through the end of July. July thirty.
- 0:22Speaker 2: First, when you donate online, proceeds go to Feeding America.
- 0:26Speaker 2: When you donate in store, your donations go to the
- 0:28Speaker 2: local charity of the store owner's individual choice. So when
- 0:32Speaker 2: you stop by the brand new Hollywood Grocery Outlet Bargain Market,
- 0:35Speaker 2: you can help Carlos Torares and his family raise money
- 0:37Speaker 2: for Project Angel Food.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Hi, Carlos and Car are on with us.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Hi.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Hi, Hello guys.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And also on the phone, is my dear friend a
- 0:47Speaker 2: regular on the show. Hi, Richard Aube.
- 0:50Speaker 4: Hi, Lisa, Carlos and car and all the iHeart family.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, Richard is the CEO of Project Angel
- 0:59Speaker 2: Food and they will receive the much needed funds from
- 1:01Speaker 2: the Hollywood Stores fundraiser to feed Angelino's who are super six. So,
- 1:05Speaker 2: first of all, I love having two of my favorites
- 1:09Speaker 2: on the phone. I've been a longtime fan of grocery
- 1:11Speaker 2: outlet Bargain Market, and of course Project Angel Food is
- 1:15Speaker 2: a volunteer and a gal who gets very involved behind
- 1:17Speaker 2: the scenes. So first of all, I want to ask,
- 1:19Speaker 2: I know you own two grocery outlets, but how long
- 1:21Speaker 2: have you been?
- 1:22Speaker 1: The owner of the one in downtown LA.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Since twenty eighteen twenty.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Eighteen and the Hollywood store, of course, just opened up
- 1:28Speaker 2: right there on Sunset Bulevard near Gower a sixty one
- 1:31Speaker 2: thirty West Sunset Boulevard near Gower in the heart of Hollywood.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And how did you find Project Angel Food? I mean
- 1:38Speaker 2: how I know they're right there in the neighborhood, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: how did you find them and decide? Okay, these guys
- 1:42Speaker 2: are great. This is who I want to partner with
- 1:44Speaker 2: for my store's charity.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Wow, we were looking for a partner. One of the
- 1:50Speaker 3: things that we definitely focused on is definitely nutrition education
- 1:56Speaker 3: and how can wellness And when we heard about Project
- 2:00Speaker 3: Need Your Food and everything they do to make food
- 2:04Speaker 3: accessible and to this vulnerable population. We were all in
- 2:07Speaker 3: from the beginning.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I love that.
- 2:10Speaker 2: And Richard, before we go to you, Carlos, talk about
- 2:13Speaker 2: how important this is to grocery l at Barger Market
- 2:16Speaker 2: as a company, this whole giving back thing.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Not every store does it to the.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Level that you guys are allowed to touch on that,
- 2:21Speaker 2: because I'd like to think that that would make it
- 2:23Speaker 2: more attracted, more attractive to want to become part of
- 2:27Speaker 2: the company and want to.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Own more stores to help give back to more communities.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Me.
- 2:32Speaker 3: One of the main reasons we're our owners is because
- 2:35Speaker 3: we get to support the communities that we serve. And
- 2:38Speaker 3: with that said, when you speak about independence from hunger,
- 2:42Speaker 3: this is something I was establishing twenty eleven. To date,
- 2:46Speaker 3: we have raised thirty million dollars with over a thousand
- 2:50Speaker 3: plus organizations that we support as owners independent owners, And
- 2:55Speaker 3: I have to tell you this is the one thing
- 2:58Speaker 3: we do in units and every grocery outlet, every independent owner,
- 3:03Speaker 3: they select their organization that they're going to support locally.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And that's one of the wonderful things that we appreciate
- 3:09Speaker 3: about project Age of Food. They are right here and
- 3:12Speaker 3: they are a local partners.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Right down the street and yeah, and they feed people
- 3:16Speaker 2: locally in La County who are super sick.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Richard touch on how happy were.
- 3:21Speaker 2: To get the phone call from Carlos letting you know
- 3:24Speaker 2: that they wanted to team up with Project Angel Food
- 3:26Speaker 2: and help raise us money during their independence from Hunger
- 3:28Speaker 2: Food Drive in July.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Absolutely, you know, we love to partner with grocery outlet
- 3:35Speaker 4: because we do what they do. We provide food for people,
- 3:39Speaker 4: and we provide delicious food, fresh food, all of that.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Our difference is that we're providing it to people who
- 3:47Speaker 4: are home bound and they're sick and they need a
- 3:50Speaker 4: medically tailored meal. So for a grocery outlet to pick
- 3:55Speaker 4: us from all of the charities they commit to help
- 3:58Speaker 4: out Project Angel Food than our population is deeply appreciated.
- 4:03Speaker 4: You know, about fifty percent of the people who serve
- 4:06Speaker 4: are Latino and they're also living at home with very
- 4:12Speaker 4: little resources. A lot of people are low or very
- 4:17Speaker 4: low income as well.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Low income, but also people who had a heart attack
- 4:21Speaker 2: or stroke, or on dialysis, or people dealing with cancer
- 4:26Speaker 2: or have COPD or even Alzheimer's. There's so many people
- 4:29Speaker 2: who are critically ill that you feed and bring food
- 4:32Speaker 2: to medically tailored meals that are delicious and good for
- 4:36Speaker 2: their body. You might be hearing this thinking, oh my gosh,
- 4:39Speaker 2: I need to get my mom on this, my dad
- 4:41Speaker 2: needs this, my grandparents. I need to get people that
- 4:44Speaker 2: I love and care about, or my neighbor they need
- 4:46Speaker 2: this food.
- 4:47Speaker 1: You can apply.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Online and start there angelfood dot org, angelfood dot org.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Okay, let's talk about grocyelid Barger Market. I love the
- 4:55Speaker 1: neighborhood vibe.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I often shop with the one here in at Burbank
- 4:58Speaker 2: by the radio station, alway bummed into.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Coworkers there looking to get their deals. Now, I popped
- 5:02Speaker 1: by your store Carlos and Hollywood on my way home,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and same thing. You can just tell there's.
- 5:06Speaker 2: A lot of regulars already, people walking to the store
- 5:09Speaker 2: who live in the neighborhood. I just love that vibe
- 5:12Speaker 2: of so many familiar faces when we go to our
- 5:14Speaker 2: neighborhood grocery aled bargain market stores.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Oh my god, we love these. Our neighbors are just wonderful.
- 5:20Speaker 3: And the support that we're getting from this community, it's
- 5:23Speaker 3: just greatly amazing. You know. We talk about what Project
- 5:26Speaker 3: Angel Food does making it accessible, and we definitely are
- 5:29Speaker 3: very proud as any pendentonners in our teams to be
- 5:32Speaker 3: able to do that to our great pricing thirty to
- 5:34Speaker 3: seventy percent of every big brand names, and thank you.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You know, we just really appreciate the support that we
- 5:42Speaker 3: are getting from our the Hollywood, California and downtown holiday community.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, I became a groceryled bargain market fan
- 5:48Speaker 2: during twenty twenty when I think a lot of people
- 5:50Speaker 2: start to reevaluate, why am I spending so much at
- 5:53Speaker 2: the grocery store, you know, look at these prices.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Why. You know, when I found grocery olet, the light
- 5:58Speaker 1: bulb went off and I thought, wait a minute, how
- 5:59Speaker 1: are they getting away with this?
- 6:01Speaker 2: And I was just a nice way to know, or
- 6:04Speaker 2: I can get my avocados for a better deal. Clearly
- 6:06Speaker 2: I'm in the wine section a lot. You can get
- 6:08Speaker 2: wine and incredible deals and prices. Your toilet paper, all
- 6:12Speaker 2: your paper goods, your home goods. I love the seasonal section.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I love the beautiful fresh flowers you guys have with
- 6:17Speaker 2: one in Hollywood right there.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I was just at the store a few days ago.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Of course, to you know, check out how many donations
- 6:23Speaker 2: have been coming in that will benefit Project Angel Food,
- 6:26Speaker 2: but for your independence from Hunger Food Drive. It's so
- 6:28Speaker 2: easy to come in the store and make a donation.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Whether it's one dollar, three dollars, four dollars, five dollars
- 6:34Speaker 2: or more, every dollar is going to Project Angel Food.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Car talk about how the whole thing works.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Let's talk about give five, get five, and how it
- 6:41Speaker 2: works when you stop by your store this month.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Yeah, there's so many different ways to donate. Of as
- 6:47Speaker 5: you mentioned, if you donate in person at one of
- 6:50Speaker 5: our locations, that money is going directly to Project Angel Food.
- 6:54Speaker 5: So yeah, if you donate five dollars to us, you
- 6:56Speaker 5: will receive a coupon back of five dollars to use
- 7:00Speaker 5: the next time that you come shop with us. So
- 7:02Speaker 5: we all want to make sure that y'all are getting
- 7:05Speaker 5: food and that food stays accessible for y'all, So our
- 7:08Speaker 5: savings are a number one priority. Yeah, so please please
- 7:12Speaker 5: come on down. There's a lot of different opportunities. Are
- 7:15Speaker 5: also going to be folding an IFH Fun Day that's
- 7:19Speaker 5: going to be in Hollywood July eighteenth and nineteenth from
- 7:22Speaker 5: eleven to two. So with that, if you donate five dollars,
- 7:26Speaker 5: you will still get that five dollars off cubon, but
- 7:28Speaker 5: you will also get a free hot dog and a
- 7:30Speaker 5: free meal. What there's also going to be a price deal.
- 7:32Speaker 5: It's going to be so much fun.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 5: So that's going to be the eighteenth and nineteenes in
- 7:36Speaker 5: Hollywood and then again on July twenty fifth and twenty
- 7:39Speaker 5: sixth at downtown La.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, car, what are the times? Because you
- 7:42Speaker 2: know now I have to remage my schedule. What are
- 7:44Speaker 2: the times for Hollywood July eighteen and nineteenth.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Or eighteen and nineteenth, eleven.
- 7:49Speaker 2: To two, eleven to two, and then twenty fifth and
- 7:51Speaker 2: twenty six What time in downtown same time?
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yes, eleven and two in downtown, eleven.
- 7:55Speaker 2: To two in downtown and again, so easy to pop
- 7:58Speaker 2: in the store. And what a generous thing again for
- 8:00Speaker 2: the company. You know, when I made my five dollars
- 8:02Speaker 2: donation and proudly displayed my name, you get to write
- 8:05Speaker 2: your name five dollars from Lisa Fox. I'm like, oh,
- 8:08Speaker 2: can you hang it right there front and center one
- 8:09Speaker 2: everyone today? Yeah, checkstan one. You can look for Lisa Fox.
- 8:13Speaker 2: But when you how generous of the company immediately gives
- 8:16Speaker 2: you your five dollars back.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Essentially as kind of a thank you, thank you.
- 8:19Speaker 2: For helping us to support local charities. But we're going
- 8:23Speaker 2: to give you five bucks for your next visit, just
- 8:25Speaker 2: as a thank you for being a giver.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it's incredible. I'm so proud Ilse of every independent
- 8:32Speaker 3: owner and house, our headquarters, the whole entire Grocer reality
- 8:37Speaker 3: team for truly making this, establishing this independence from Hunger
- 8:43Speaker 3: event that truly officers knew what we want to do best,
- 8:46Speaker 3: and that is support our communities.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Richard, why don't you mention the very nice thing that
- 8:51Speaker 2: happened during the Lead with Love Project Engel Food telethon
- 8:55Speaker 2: recently that we did on Channel five thanks to Carlos
- 8:57Speaker 2: and his Hollywood store.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yes, school outlet knows that people are coming through and
- 9:04Speaker 4: they have committed to seventy five hundred dollars because all
- 9:09Speaker 4: these donations are coming at the rapid fire pace, including
- 9:13Speaker 4: the one from Police of Box Woo.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I love that with That's nice.
- 9:18Speaker 6: See.
- 9:18Speaker 2: But see we're all working together, and so he's gonna
- 9:21Speaker 2: stop by the store. You're gonna get great deals. You're
- 9:23Speaker 2: gonna say hi to car You're gonna say hi to
- 9:25Speaker 2: Carlos if he's there, he's usually bouncing back with both
- 9:27Speaker 2: of you, bouncing back from downtown LA to the Hollywood store.
- 9:30Speaker 2: You're gonna when you give five five dollars, you'll get
- 9:32Speaker 2: five dollars coupon for your next visit at the store,
- 9:35Speaker 2: and also car talk about how you can also purchase
- 9:38Speaker 2: a pre made food bag to help give back.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Oh, yes, you'll see. We'll have displays out there at
- 9:43Speaker 5: the front of the stores. They're going to be these
- 9:45Speaker 5: brown paper bags and inside is already filled with groceries
- 9:49Speaker 5: that we've pre selected to send to Project Angel Food.
- 9:51Speaker 5: So if you don't want to give monetary donations, you
- 9:54Speaker 5: could also choose that route as well.
- 9:55Speaker 1: See so great.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And you can also donate make any kind of donation
- 9:59Speaker 2: at the register from a dollar up.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, and you will still receive your five dollars
- 10:03Speaker 5: off cupot. Oh that's great as well.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I love that you can donate the register with your
- 10:08Speaker 2: super nice people that work there. You could donate online,
- 10:10Speaker 2: but again, if you do it online, that money does
- 10:12Speaker 2: go to Feeding America, which is still helping people. But locally,
- 10:15Speaker 2: if you're able to stop by the Hollywood store right there,
- 10:17Speaker 2: sixty one thirty West Sunset Bulevard near Gower in Hollywood,
- 10:20Speaker 2: right down the street from Project Angel Food right there
- 10:23Speaker 2: on Vine. Then you know you're doing a really special thing, Richard.
- 10:26Speaker 2: How many times have you stopped by the store? When
- 10:28Speaker 2: do we go in shopping? Are we going this weekend?
- 10:30Speaker 4: I'm on my way right now. I love those containers
- 10:34Speaker 4: with the fresh cup fruit. Oh you're so good.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Well, I got to look for those next visits.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you have a lot of great stuff there and
- 10:42Speaker 4: we love it. And the prices are unbelievable.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Hey, in today's times, every dollar count so saved at
- 10:51Speaker 2: the grocery store is major and grocery alt bargain market,
- 10:54Speaker 2: that's what they're all about. Plus they've got wow what
- 10:56Speaker 2: they call wow savings and savings and then not sections
- 11:00Speaker 2: of the store.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Look for the green markets.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Look for the word NA natural, Organic, specialty, healthy, which
- 11:06Speaker 2: is often so pricey at other stores.
- 11:09Speaker 3: In online, we continue to strive on expanding that assortment
- 11:13Speaker 3: to and obviously the key is who make it make
- 11:16Speaker 3: it available in an affordable way to our customers. You know,
- 11:20Speaker 3: that is accessible for them to eat, to eat healthy
- 11:24Speaker 3: and be able to prepare foods, especially now that we're
- 11:27Speaker 3: in summertime to be able to make those recipes, you
- 11:30Speaker 3: know for healthy eating and.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Beauty products too, Nash.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So it's natural, organic, specialty, healthy, very easy to find.
- 11:38Speaker 2: That's what the green labeling in the stores. And then
- 11:41Speaker 2: you've got you know, vitamins, You've got beauty stuff, You've
- 11:43Speaker 2: got products for the home, products for the pet, pet goodies.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I mean pretty much everything you need. Your meat, your dairy,
- 11:48Speaker 1: your produce.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I love all the frozen stuff is great, incredible deals
- 11:53Speaker 2: on frozen fish. I'm a regular. I got all my
- 11:54Speaker 2: regular stuff that I always get from you guys. So
- 11:57Speaker 2: very happy that you're in the Hollywood neighborhood and locations
- 12:00Speaker 2: all over southern California. I believe I've been to most
- 12:03Speaker 2: of these, so bear with me for a second. Of course, Hollywood,
- 12:06Speaker 2: I'm still to make it. Downtown, La Burbank, Chatsworth, Laguna Hills,
- 12:10Speaker 2: South Pasadena, Glen Oaks, Torrance.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Eurupa Valley, Arcadia, Alta.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Dina, Downey, Inglewood, Santa Canita, Paramount, San Gabriel, Rosemead, La Puente,
- 12:22Speaker 2: Balden Park, and Rodondo Beach. And again, all these locations
- 12:26Speaker 2: helping to get back to a local organization in their cities.
- 12:29Speaker 2: So if you live near any of these cities, if
- 12:31Speaker 2: you stop by there, it's going to give back to
- 12:34Speaker 2: someone right in your own community, which is a beautiful thing,
- 12:37Speaker 2: just like Carlos is doing in Hollywood for Project Angel Food.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I have one question for Carlos.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Yeah, how long would this go on?
- 12:46Speaker 3: This actually began on June twenty four and it goes
- 12:50Speaker 3: through the entire month of July, So July thirty first
- 12:53Speaker 3: will be the last day.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah, But Richard, the love will live on for forever.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Okay, I don't think we're We're we're all going to
- 13:00Speaker 2: beat each other's lives forever.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Now, see exactly.
- 13:04Speaker 1: We're bonded. We're bonding. It's a thing.
- 13:06Speaker 4: And I have one question for you, Lisa, Yes, can
- 13:10Speaker 4: you please sing the jingles?
- 13:12Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I do love the jingle. I proudly
- 13:17Speaker 2: love promoting and talking about grocery Alet bargain Market on
- 13:20Speaker 2: the radio, and of course as a real shopper and
- 13:23Speaker 2: doing these events for store openings. I think I'm an
- 13:26Speaker 2: Irvine stand by. I am at the Irvine store July
- 13:29Speaker 2: twenty fifth, from eleven to one and the Laverne Grocery
- 13:32Speaker 2: Aalid bargain market sometime in October. So yeah, if I'm
- 13:35Speaker 2: not working an event at grocery Aallet and they're shopping,
- 13:39Speaker 2: hanging out with nice people, helping to raise money, and
- 13:41Speaker 2: hopefully you will be too, especially now through the end
- 13:44Speaker 2: of July. For their independence from Hunger Food Drive, like
- 13:47Speaker 2: Carlo said, the jingle's coming.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Like Carlo said, they've been doing this since twenty.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Eleven and grocery Let and their independent operators like Carlos
- 13:55Speaker 2: and car have helped raise over thirty million dollars to
- 13:58Speaker 2: support local food agencies across the country, which is just
- 14:02Speaker 2: such a big give and again, I love the local
- 14:05Speaker 2: commitment to local charities like Project Angel Food. It just
- 14:09Speaker 2: makes you feel like, oh, when I give back and
- 14:10Speaker 2: I give my five dollars, I know exactly who it's
- 14:12Speaker 2: going to. And do you guys, how do you tell people?
- 14:15Speaker 2: How do you tell people which charities you support? Probably
- 14:17Speaker 2: on your social media.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Right, absolutely, we're definitely cards actually are the one that's
- 14:23Speaker 3: really leading the way here when it comes to social media.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Every cat shaer obviously, it's just full of excitement and
- 14:30Speaker 3: energy to spread the word to our customers. We definitely
- 14:34Speaker 3: have signings throughout this door. But the key is, you know,
- 14:37Speaker 3: talk to your neighbor any anywhere you're at it go
- 14:40Speaker 3: through July thirty first, and we really want to make
- 14:43Speaker 3: sure that this organization project that deserves every bit, you know,
- 14:51Speaker 3: every bit of support really help us meet our goals.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yes, come on together, we can do this. Everybody, Come on,
- 14:58Speaker 2: come on in and shop and give and save and
- 15:02Speaker 2: Richard Project and your Food always need to volunteers, volunteers
- 15:05Speaker 2: in the kitchen, volunteer drivers.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I've done it all. It feels wonderful to give back.
- 15:10Speaker 4: So eighty percent of our kitchen every day is powered
- 15:14Speaker 4: by volunteers. So we need volunteers to help infuse that
- 15:19Speaker 4: love into the meals that we deliver to the folks
- 15:22Speaker 4: at home. We also need volunteer drivers. Lisa's boyfriend that
- 15:28Speaker 4: was gonna say husband, a boyfriend, he will be one
- 15:32Speaker 4: day driver. Yeah yeah, and so you know, you know
- 15:38Speaker 4: how important it is for that human connection. You're delivering
- 15:42Speaker 4: the meal and you're delivering a smile, you're delivering you know,
- 15:48Speaker 4: some time to listen to what happened in their day,
- 15:52Speaker 4: and you're delivering warmth.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know my yeah, my Eric's been delivering
- 15:56Speaker 2: meals for you full time since the fires for his
- 15:59Speaker 2: mental health, and it has been a lifesaver because he's still.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Such a wonderful man. Thanks to you, guys. You know,
- 16:04Speaker 6: giving back, sorry, you know what's coming. Giving back is
- 16:08Speaker 6: just a huge part of fulling that love in your
- 16:11Speaker 6: heart and volunteering for you. You really are going to
- 16:14Speaker 6: feel that, whether you're driving or work in the kitchen,
- 16:17Speaker 6: you're gonna feel it because it's really a special place.
