- 2:45Speaker 3: you know, maybe we need to hear the other side

- 3:03Speaker 3: She joins us this morning the part of our store studio.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Deb Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Good morning, thanks for having me, thank you.
- 3:09Speaker 3: For being here. Big announcement, big now see yesterday. Now
- 3:12Speaker 3: we've written about it, talked about it on the air,
- 3:14Speaker 3: But for those who may have missed it from your office,
- 3:16Speaker 3: what was the big announcement yesterday?
- 3:18Speaker 6: Dev We have created and implemented what we have coined
- 3:22Speaker 6: the Victim's Voice initiative, Voice being an acronym for a
- 3:27Speaker 6: violent offender initiative for community empowerment. And it is a
- 3:32Speaker 6: program that we have designed that is going to hold
- 3:35Speaker 6: the most violent offenders in our community accountable. And it's
- 3:38Speaker 6: going to protect our children, our citizens, and the victims
- 3:41Speaker 6: of crime. And so you know I said yesterday, for
- 3:47Speaker 6: far too long, violent gun crime, violent sexual crimes, and
- 3:51Speaker 6: violent crimes have been against children have been treated just
- 3:54Speaker 6: like every other crime. And we can't treat those cases
- 3:58Speaker 6: the same. And so I have implemented certain policies within
- 4:03Speaker 6: the office and made certain changes that are going to
- 4:06Speaker 6: allow us to handle those types of crimes a little differently.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Get out of your system. I got the same thing
- 4:15Speaker 3: going on. I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 4:17Speaker 6: So part of the program is that we are no
- 4:20Speaker 6: longer going to be agreeing to certain things, and those
- 4:23Speaker 6: things being we are no longer going to be agreeing
- 4:26Speaker 6: to bond reductions or personal recognizance bonds for individuals who
- 4:31Speaker 6: charge who are charged with those types of crime crimes,
- 4:35Speaker 6: violent gun crimes, violent sexual crimes, violent crimes against children.
- 4:39Speaker 6: We are also no longer going to allow a routine
- 4:42Speaker 6: release to drug treatment. That's one thing we struggle as
- 4:45Speaker 6: prosecutors to determine, you know, who are the right candidates
- 4:48Speaker 6: for drug drug treatment and who really needs drug treatment.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Or who wants it.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Exactly who wants it or you know, do they want
- 4:56Speaker 6: drug treatment or do they just want out of jail.
- 4:59Speaker 6: And so that's one of the things that we struggle
- 5:01Speaker 6: with in making those decisions. But ultimately, when we step
- 5:06Speaker 6: back and we look at the bigger picture, we should
- 5:09Speaker 6: not be releasing these individuals who are charged with these
- 5:12Speaker 6: types of crimes out into society. We are dealing again
- 5:18Speaker 6: with violent gun crimes, violent sex crimes, violent crimes against children,
- 5:22Speaker 6: and if we're not going to protect them, then who
- 5:25Speaker 6: is The third and probably biggest prong to this is
- 5:31Speaker 6: that we are no longer going to be pleading felony
- 5:34Speaker 6: charges down to misdemeanors on those types of cases. You know,
- 5:40Speaker 6: I have created a different sort of chain of command
- 5:45Speaker 6: in the office. We created five new supervisory positions that
- 5:51Speaker 6: I have selected people who are entrusted with certain things,
- 5:57Speaker 6: and those things being assisting an identifying resources that are
- 6:01Speaker 6: available to us, learning the attorneys and their needs, their characteristics,
- 6:07Speaker 6: and then identify training and what training is available and
- 6:11Speaker 6: what training those individuals need. You know, I said when
- 6:14Speaker 6: I started this thing, changes need to be made, and
- 6:18Speaker 6: training was one of those big things. And I think
- 6:20Speaker 6: this is going to allow a mentorship. It's going to
- 6:23Speaker 6: allow some more senior attorneys to come in and set
- 6:27Speaker 6: that example and frankly show these younger attorneys how this
- 6:31Speaker 6: job is done well and how it's done right. And
- 6:35Speaker 6: so those more senior attorneys that I have placed in
- 6:39Speaker 6: those five section chief positions are going to help us
- 6:45Speaker 6: by going over things with the younger attorneys, particularly plea offers,
- 6:49Speaker 6: all plea offers that go out of my office will
- 6:51Speaker 6: now be reviewed by a Section chief to ensure you know,
- 6:55Speaker 6: we're getting the best result in each case. We're getting
- 6:59Speaker 6: there just reasonable outcomes, and that those outcomes have been
- 7:03Speaker 6: communicated to the victims and to the police officers involved.
- 7:08Speaker 6: I think that will ensure that we're doing our job
- 7:10Speaker 6: and keeping people safe.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Talking to with Devora Russick again, prosecutor here in kanawccount
- 7:15Speaker 3: even Dave Allen showing five eighty live brought to you
- 7:17Speaker 3: apart by Brightway Insurance Amaze Agency. They now offer small
- 7:20Speaker 3: business insurance to the four major carriers, the Hartford Travelers,
- 7:23Speaker 3: Progressive at next called to stop by. I see John
- 7:25Speaker 3: and Sherry today thirty eight sixty Tay's Valley Road Suite
- 7:28Speaker 3: one and Hurricane three zero four eight one four two
- 7:31Speaker 3: five zero nine vis Brightwaymaiz dot com. You don't go
- 7:35Speaker 3: in and you make all of these changes or these
- 7:38Speaker 3: proposed changes or whatever without a lot of work going
- 7:40Speaker 3: on behind the scenes. It must have been a lot
- 7:43Speaker 3: to put all this together.
- 7:44Speaker 7: It was.
- 7:45Speaker 6: It was a lot. But you know again, when I
- 7:48Speaker 6: started this, I told you I had changes coming, I
- 7:50Speaker 6: had plans the office. There's such a great group of
- 7:56Speaker 6: hard working people that really really care about what we're doing.
- 8:02Speaker 6: And to be able to have those people in my
- 8:06Speaker 6: corner is great because I have received so much support
- 8:09Speaker 6: with this thing, not only in the office, but with
- 8:13Speaker 6: other law enforcement agencies, our community partners, some of the
- 8:16Speaker 6: victim's advocacy groups. I mean, I have really been blessed
- 8:21Speaker 6: to have received the welcome that I had when I
- 8:25Speaker 6: started this thing, and I've had a lot of help
- 8:27Speaker 6: getting the Victim's voice up and running, and you know,
- 8:31Speaker 6: just making sure we're doing the right thing every day.
- 8:35Speaker 7: I had a.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Had a text here to the show, and it says, well,
- 8:40Speaker 3: prosecute rustnik, tell us all the cases that you plea
- 8:43Speaker 3: bargain and how they would now be changed or barred
- 8:45Speaker 3: by the new policy.
- 8:48Speaker 6: So if we deal with approximately twenty six thousand cases
- 8:51Speaker 6: a year, so I can't say how we're handling every
- 8:55Speaker 6: single case, absolutely yeah, But what I can say is
- 8:57Speaker 6: that throughout my time at the Prosecutor's Office, I would
- 9:00Speaker 6: see things and I would think, if I were the boss,
- 9:03Speaker 6: I would I want to change that. And so when
- 9:07Speaker 6: I was in Circuit court, assigned to a circuit court judge,
- 9:11Speaker 6: day in, day out, I practiced what I am preaching
- 9:14Speaker 6: right now, and I was able to see changes be made,
- 9:17Speaker 6: and those changes were my being harsher on bond reductions,
- 9:22Speaker 6: on plea offers. You know, we have to take into
- 9:26Speaker 6: account a variety of factors when making a plea offer,
- 9:29Speaker 6: but one of those things is the nature of the charge.
- 9:33Speaker 6: And when we are dealing with a crime involving a victim,
- 9:36Speaker 6: we certainly need to be reaching out to that victim
- 9:38Speaker 6: and getting that victim's input and getting an idea of
- 9:43Speaker 6: what justice looks like for that person, because it looks
- 9:45Speaker 6: different for every person.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Indeed, it does. What is the timeline here? I mean,
- 9:50Speaker 3: are we talking immediately?
- 9:51Speaker 5: Is it go take?
- 9:52Speaker 3: This going to be this is a lot of This
- 9:53Speaker 3: is a heavy lift, as they say, it's gonna take
- 9:55Speaker 3: some time to get this in. What's the timeline here?
- 9:57Speaker 6: You know it is, it is a heavy lift. We
- 10:00Speaker 6: implemented the changes effective yesterday. So these are policies that
- 10:04Speaker 6: are in place now. These are things that effective yesterday,
- 10:09Speaker 6: my attorneys will no longer be doing now. Of course,
- 10:11Speaker 6: we are going to have some growing pains. We are
- 10:14Speaker 6: going to have some plea offers and some things that
- 10:17Speaker 6: will be left out there from you know prior to
- 10:21Speaker 6: implementing this policy, But once all of that gets smoothed
- 10:25Speaker 6: out and we really are in full transition to this thing,
- 10:28Speaker 6: I think we're going to see some big changes.
- 10:30Speaker 3: And you know, they're based on the pictures that I
- 10:32Speaker 3: saw yesterday from the press conference, and of course we
- 10:35Speaker 3: covered it, as did all the meeting in the area.
- 10:37Speaker 3: You obviously have a lot of people on board with
- 10:39Speaker 3: these changes, because I saw everybody from the County Commission
- 10:42Speaker 3: to police agencies, certainly those are your office. I mean
- 10:45Speaker 3: there's a lot of people who jumped on board on
- 10:47Speaker 3: this thing.
- 10:48Speaker 6: Absolutely absolutely. When we start talking about how the office
- 10:53Speaker 6: is handling cases and you know, again what justice looks
- 10:58Speaker 6: like to different individuals, people care about that, and believe
- 11:03Speaker 6: it or not, people care about what happens in this community,
- 11:06Speaker 6: and I care about what those people think. So we
- 11:10Speaker 6: are making sure we're doing what we promised the public
- 11:13Speaker 6: we would do and frankly, what we took an oath
- 11:15Speaker 6: of office to do.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I saw one of the comments, I think it was
- 11:18Speaker 3: on our news story when it was it was posted
- 11:20Speaker 3: on x formerly known as Twitter, that somebody said like
- 11:24Speaker 3: something to the effect of why did it take this long?
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean, is there any comment. I know you just
- 11:30Speaker 3: got there, so we can't blame you, but I mean, overall,
- 11:34Speaker 3: you know, why did it take this long for this
- 11:35Speaker 3: sort of thing to happen?
- 11:36Speaker 6: You know, that's something that's extremely difficult for me to
- 11:39Speaker 6: answer for. I don't know. But what I do know
- 11:44Speaker 6: is that once we realized there was a problem, and
- 11:48Speaker 6: once I had the ability to change it, I certainly did.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And you know, you hear then and we'll let you
- 11:55Speaker 3: go on this. When we hear this from the public
- 11:57Speaker 3: all the time, and it doesn't matter whether it's Canan
- 11:59Speaker 3: County or the brad, I mean, people will say, well,
- 12:01Speaker 3: I can't believe they let them go. They let them go,
- 12:04Speaker 3: and I don't think sometimes and this is kind of
- 12:06Speaker 3: not necessarily aim directly at a prosecutor, but it's the
- 12:10Speaker 3: same when I talk to magistrates and things of that,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and sometimes you know, there are guidelines that have to
- 12:16Speaker 3: have to be followed, and sometimes it's not the corrupt
- 12:19Speaker 3: quote unquote corupt legal system, it's just the law. But
- 12:22Speaker 3: it sounds like for what I understand is that you
- 12:25Speaker 3: are your office is now moving towards to doing basically
- 12:30Speaker 3: all you can exactly, you.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Know, if we don't do what we can, then why
- 12:34Speaker 6: are we doing anything? You know, we we definitely want
- 12:38Speaker 6: to do everything in our power to make sure that
- 12:41Speaker 6: we're stepping up to the plate and giving the courts
- 12:45Speaker 6: and the juries the best cases that we can put
- 12:48Speaker 6: on because you know, ultimately we are bound by the
- 12:51Speaker 6: law and we have very strict rules that we have
- 12:54Speaker 6: to follow, and it doesn't always work out the way
- 12:57Speaker 6: that the public would hope that it would have, frankly
- 12:59Speaker 6: the way that.
- 13:00Speaker 3: We would have surely, Yeah, it happens. Deb I appreciate

- 16:30Speaker 3: There are a whole lot of other aspects to it

- 17:58Speaker 3: whether it's anybody. By the way, deb Bruh, you know,
- 18:01Speaker 3: I never said anything about her political affiliation. I've never
- 18:04Speaker 3: asked her because it's not important. But every time, every
- 18:08Speaker 3: time that we have a Republican on, somebody's got to
- 18:12Speaker 3: bring up Donald Trump. Here's what the Texters need to understand. Okay,
- 18:16Speaker 3: it's not all about the guy at the top. It's
- 18:19Speaker 3: really really not whether it's Biden or whether it's Harris
- 18:22Speaker 3: or whatever. It's just so freaking frustrating sometimes that anytime
- 18:27Speaker 3: we try to talk about anything going on like this,
- 18:29Speaker 3: somebody has what does she think about Trump? What does
- 18:32Speaker 3: he think about Biden? Who the hell cares? It's not
- 18:35Speaker 3: about the national it's the local stuff, all right. Rant over.
- 18:40Speaker 3: It's one of these signature events here at the Radio Ranch.
- 18:43Speaker 3: For seventeen years we've been doing this. This is Lango Law,
- 18:46Speaker 3: one of the seven three of the beat Backpack Attack.
- 18:48Speaker 3: It happens today at our place eleven eleven Virginia Street
- 18:51Speaker 3: easton Charleston. Lnup is at three and the distribution starts
- 18:55Speaker 3: at four o'clock. What he would's the man behind the
- 18:57Speaker 3: whole thing? What he is packing backpacks? I understand hand
- 19:00Speaker 3: at the time, Dale Cooper. It just happened to be
- 19:03Speaker 3: producing our show today. I'll get the Coop in whether
- 19:05Speaker 3: this was one of the part of what he was
- 19:06Speaker 3: will be played by Dale Cooper.
- 19:09Speaker 10: Man, don't put that on me now, I don't. I
- 19:11Speaker 10: don't have that much energy when I first wake up
- 19:13Speaker 10: in the morning. There's no way. But yeah, the Backpacked Attack.
- 19:16Speaker 10: They see this is my fourteenth year back and what
- 19:18Speaker 10: is this the annual backpack Pick seventeen seventeen. So this
- 19:21Speaker 10: was still this was going on when I first came
- 19:22Speaker 10: back to Charleston, and it blew me away the first
- 19:25Speaker 10: time that I saw it. It was just an incredible,
- 19:28Speaker 10: an incredible event. And things have changed in the last
- 19:30Speaker 10: in the last fifteen years as far as the things
- 19:32Speaker 10: that we give in these backpacks. We've listened to the
- 19:36Speaker 10: community and to the folks that are getting the backpacks
- 19:38Speaker 10: and We've changed up the ingredients just a little bit.
- 19:41Speaker 7: You know.
- 19:41Speaker 10: We used to focus on the traditional school items, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 10: like the trapper keepers for folks that remember those. You know,
- 19:47Speaker 10: there are bags with pens and papers and erasers and stuff,
- 19:49Speaker 10: and we're not doing that anymore. This is a this
- 19:51Speaker 10: is a useful backpack full of stuff like I think
- 19:55Speaker 10: like a first aid kits, the most like the most
- 19:58Speaker 10: like old school thing that's in there.
- 19:59Speaker 5: There's a lot of gift card and.
- 20:00Speaker 10: Stuff for school water bottles in the past, because everybody
- 20:03Speaker 10: takes water bottles around with him anymore.
- 20:05Speaker 5: They have to anyway. Yeah, I think so.
- 20:06Speaker 10: So this is very useful and it's uh and it's
- 20:09Speaker 10: something that is going to help the community. This is
- 20:11Speaker 10: a huge issue for Woody. He's always trying to make
- 20:14Speaker 10: inroads with the community, give folks school school supplies that
- 20:16Speaker 10: maybe can't always afford the school supplies, or make it
- 20:18Speaker 10: a little easier for multi kid families and things like that.
- 20:21Speaker 10: So this is just a great event that we do
- 20:22Speaker 10: every year. Slango Law, of course, is our primary sponsor
- 20:25Speaker 10: on this, and we have a whole slew of other
- 20:27Speaker 10: sponsors that are involved that have contributed to this thing.
- 20:30Speaker 10: It's just an incredible thing. Lineup is going to be
- 20:32Speaker 10: at starting at three. If you've never done it before,
- 20:35Speaker 10: the lineup can get kind of long. I mean, it
- 20:38Speaker 10: can wrap out of the parking lot and go down
- 20:39Speaker 10: the street towards Catholic a little bit. You've got to
- 20:41Speaker 10: be a little careful. And then the giveaway will start
- 20:44Speaker 10: at four and we'll go until we give away all
- 20:45Speaker 10: the backpacks. We're estimating about six.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what it usually is. And again the lineup
- 20:50Speaker 3: begins at three and we'll start handed about at four.
- 20:51Speaker 3: And the way it works, if you're not familiar with this,
- 20:53Speaker 3: what we do is we're all out on the on
- 20:55Speaker 3: the parking now, not the lot where we park the
- 20:57Speaker 3: vans on the other side. I'm pointing like people can
- 20:59Speaker 3: see a couple of months, they'll be able to circular
- 21:03Speaker 3: circular parking light, this circular light. And so basically what
- 21:06Speaker 3: we do is is we're all set up and we
- 21:08Speaker 3: have other vendors that will come in instead of health right,
- 21:10Speaker 3: and some others are out there to give information. Now
- 21:12Speaker 3: we bring the kids in about four or five at
- 21:14Speaker 3: a time.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Uh.
- 21:15Speaker 3: And because we can't we just can't do more than that.
- 21:17Speaker 3: And They basically just go from spot to spot on
- 21:20Speaker 3: our parking lot and then we shift them on out
- 21:22Speaker 3: the door. Here's the main thing to remember though, all right.
- 21:26Speaker 3: One of the main things to remember, and there are several,
- 21:28Speaker 3: is that we do have rules on this thing. And
- 21:30Speaker 3: one of those is is that kids have to be present.
- 21:34Speaker 3: And so we can't get into this when you know,
- 21:36Speaker 3: mommy or grandma you know, shows up and says, well,
- 21:38Speaker 3: I got so and so at home, we got to
- 21:40Speaker 3: see the kid. Okay, we so bring the kids with you.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Hydrate them because it's going to be really really hot
- 21:46Speaker 3: out there today. Hydrate them. But we'll try to get everybody.
- 21:50Speaker 3: And we've got it kind of down. I mean, I've
- 21:51Speaker 3: only been involved with it for a couple of years,
- 21:53Speaker 3: but we've we've kind of got it down to a
- 21:55Speaker 3: science where we're be able to bring okay, four or
- 21:57Speaker 3: five in at a time. We bring families in and
- 21:59Speaker 3: then we get them about halfway through and say, okay,
- 22:01Speaker 3: bring in the next four or five. So that's how
- 22:03Speaker 3: many people. How many kids show up for these things
- 22:06Speaker 3: and parents too. And again we say lineup is at three,
- 22:10Speaker 3: and we actually begin at four. It actually goes all
- 22:13Speaker 3: the way down the street well past Charleston Catholic High School.
- 22:16Speaker 3: That's how many of these kids that show up for
- 22:19Speaker 3: these things. And I'm want to give a big shout
- 22:20Speaker 3: out to Selango Law. They stepped up to be our
- 22:23Speaker 3: presenting sponsor this year. But Coop mentioned there are several
- 22:26Speaker 3: other sponsors including West Virginia I Consultants, Revolt Energy, the
- 22:30Speaker 3: Charleston Police Department. They always have a presence here. They're
- 22:32Speaker 3: always hanging out with US Trojan Landing, Marine Styke, Wealth Enhancement,
- 22:36Speaker 3: PoCA Valley Bank, Family Care, Health Centers, the one to
- 22:39Speaker 3: sixty Driving Academy, West Virginia Health, Right, Charleston Childcare Learning Services,
- 22:44Speaker 3: Knaw County Schools, garib Dental Group, Elk City Cycles, ten
- 22:48Speaker 3: Ten Inc. And Norfolk Southern. Those are some of the
- 22:50Speaker 3: folks that help to make this whole thing possible because
- 22:53Speaker 3: the here's the bottom line, coup that stuff and those
- 22:55Speaker 3: backpacks cost money.
- 22:56Speaker 10: Oh absolutely, it's got a government does it does and
- 22:59Speaker 10: all that. What he does a great job and our
- 23:01Speaker 10: staff does a great job of doing is getting the
- 23:02Speaker 10: folks together that are community minded with a place to
- 23:05Speaker 10: deploy that to the community. So all of these businesses
- 23:07Speaker 10: that are involved with this have a charitable heart towards
- 23:10Speaker 10: the community, and we when we try to find a
- 23:12Speaker 10: way as a facilitator to get them to the community
- 23:15Speaker 10: so that we can give away these items. And so
- 23:17Speaker 10: it's always a great event. Seventeen years in, I can't wait.
- 23:19Speaker 10: We're going to go twenty on this thing, there's no question,
- 23:21Speaker 10: and it's going to be pretty awesome.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And I want to get hats off to Woody Woods
- 23:25Speaker 3: because this was his vision that he started years and
- 23:28Speaker 3: years ago and he kind of took all of Again,
- 23:30Speaker 3: I wasn't here at the time a lot of people
- 23:32Speaker 3: to build. He were, and they kind of brought everybody
- 23:34Speaker 3: out with them. And it's one of those when we
- 23:36Speaker 3: do three or four events a year that we call
- 23:38Speaker 3: all in when even though this is a beat promotion,
- 23:41Speaker 3: we're all in on it and we have office staff
- 23:43Speaker 3: out there, we bring sales, weasels out there. You know, everybody,
- 23:46Speaker 3: everybody takes part in this coop.
- 23:48Speaker 10: That is true, and it makes everybody feel feel a
- 23:51Speaker 10: little better with contributing to the community a little bit
- 23:53Speaker 10: and again being facilitators for the community and getting to
- 23:55Speaker 10: meet our listeners. You know, you go around there and
- 23:57Speaker 10: folks come in and get to meet some of the
- 23:58Speaker 10: folks on the radio, not all a lot of them.
- 24:01Speaker 10: Most of them are beat listeners, but not all of them.
- 24:03Speaker 10: And so we have dignitaries or talent or whatever you
- 24:06Speaker 10: want to call it from all the stations out there.
- 24:08Speaker 3: What we are I don't know, but you're on the
- 24:09Speaker 3: air at that time, so that's true. But Coop and
- 24:12Speaker 3: Weekly will kind of help out as best they can.
- 24:14Speaker 3: But you guys are doing live radio at that time,
- 24:16Speaker 3: are not always able to do it. And here's the
- 24:18Speaker 3: thing about it too, and that Woody and I talked
- 24:20Speaker 3: about this and you kind of touched on this. The
- 24:23Speaker 3: things that they've put in the backpacks over the years
- 24:26Speaker 3: have changed. I was talking to my wife about this
- 24:28Speaker 3: the other day because we saw and there's several media
- 24:30Speaker 3: outlets doing similar things to this, and hats off to
- 24:32Speaker 3: all of them. But about when it came to the
- 24:35Speaker 3: water bottles, But I just remember as a kid, who
- 24:38Speaker 3: you know, public school, I'm a kid of the seventies
- 24:40Speaker 3: and you know the eighties lining up for the water fountain.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Sure that's not a thing anymore.
- 24:45Speaker 5: No, No, who wants to put their mouth in one
- 24:46Speaker 5: of those anymore?
- 24:47Speaker 3: Well, we did it in the seventies. That's how we survived.
- 24:49Speaker 5: Did you ever go behind the kid that put his
- 24:51Speaker 5: whole mouth over the thing?
- 24:52Speaker 11: Oh?
- 24:52Speaker 5: Everybody never school had that kid that put their whole
- 24:54Speaker 5: mouth over the thing.
- 24:55Speaker 3: And one kid always got pushed into the water fountain too.
- 24:57Speaker 3: That's just part of it.
- 24:58Speaker 5: I was that kid.
- 25:00Speaker 3: No, I'm kid, I'm kidding, but but it did happen. Uh.
- 25:03Speaker 3: And and now it's just it's totally changed with what
- 25:05Speaker 3: the kids need, me, all the all the kids, they
- 25:08Speaker 3: all have iPads now that are provided by the schools,
- 25:10Speaker 3: and at least most counties do that. So we got
- 25:12Speaker 3: to look at earbuds, and we got to look at
- 25:14Speaker 3: you know exactly. It's just changed. It's a different world, man.
- 25:17Speaker 10: Not to get too far off topic, but say you're
- 25:19Speaker 10: out for a walk and you're really parched, and you're
- 25:21Speaker 10: at like, say the Conel City Community Center because I
- 25:24Speaker 10: know that they at least used to have one there.
- 25:25Speaker 10: You have no drink, you don't have any cash to
- 25:27Speaker 10: stop and get you something, and you walk by a
- 25:29Speaker 10: public water fountain. Are you taking any water from that thing?
- 25:32Speaker 4: Percent?
- 25:33Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, I think I still would too.
- 25:35Speaker 3: I mean, our generation grew up drinking out of I'm
- 25:37Speaker 3: from I'm from coal Camp. Sorry, we grew up drinking
- 25:40Speaker 3: out of the out of the creek, you know, and
- 25:42Speaker 3: did and we did just fine, he said, as he's
- 25:44Speaker 3: got three eyes on. But nonetheless, Coop, I appreciate you
- 25:49Speaker 3: stepping up.
- 25:51Speaker 5: But it's by back in tack tomorrow or tonight today?
- 25:53Speaker 3: Yeah, today, tonight. We'll start at three o'clock this afternoon,
- 25:56Speaker 3: lining up at our at our studios here eleven eleven
- 25:59Speaker 3: Virginia Street and Charleston, and it will go all the
- 26:02Speaker 3: way down the block. We'll start at four. Again, parents
- 26:05Speaker 3: can't show up and say I got kids at home.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Kids got to be here and so that's just part
- 26:12Speaker 3: of the deal. And then we hand you the backpack
- 26:14Speaker 3: and other stuff too. Like I said, we got other
- 26:16Speaker 3: vendors that are always on hand here, so it'll be
- 26:18Speaker 3: a great day for the kids. Weather looking good, all
- 26:20Speaker 3: be it hot. Lineup is at three. We start at
- 26:22Speaker 3: four o'clock at our studios eleven eleven Virginia treat East
- 26:25Speaker 3: here in Charleston. The seventeenth annual Backpack Attacking and all
- 26:28Speaker 3: those sponsors that I mentioned making them all possible, and
- 26:30Speaker 3: the big one in Silango Law, so very very happy
- 26:33Speaker 3: to have them on board this year. It is twenty
- 26:36Speaker 3: six minutes now away from ten to Dave Island Show
- 26:38Speaker 3: in five any live Pride to you, probably by Morgan
- 26:40Speaker 3: to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. If you're injured,
- 26:43Speaker 3: visit Forthpeople dot com Texas. What's really frustrating is almost
- 26:47Speaker 3: all West Virginia voters, We're going to vote for a
- 26:49Speaker 3: man who's been sexually violent towards women and children. It's
- 26:51Speaker 3: weird and it's gross.
- 26:54Speaker 5: All right.
- 26:55Speaker 3: So here's the thing about that statement, and I don't
- 26:57Speaker 3: disagree with what the text are saying. I could very
- 27:00Speaker 3: easily say, are you talking about Biden's not running? I
- 27:02Speaker 3: could very easily say Biden, and fifty percent of the
- 27:05Speaker 3: people would say, oh, you must be talking about Biden.
- 27:08Speaker 3: So that's where we are. That's where we are. Text says,
- 27:11Speaker 3: let's correct. The record inflation is two point nine percent
- 27:15Speaker 3: as of July twenty twenty four. The target rate is
- 27:17Speaker 3: two percent facts, not the twenty percent or whatever increase.
- 27:21Speaker 3: The texture said. President Biden has successfully lowered the inflation
- 27:24Speaker 3: rate brought on by the one hundred year pandemic. Says
- 27:28Speaker 3: the textra I will tell you this and again. This
- 27:30Speaker 3: story just broke at the top of the hour, and
- 27:32Speaker 3: as I normally do, put the I put the stations
- 27:36Speaker 3: or put the television on when I come in here
- 27:37Speaker 3: in the morning, and I go for the most nonpartisan
- 27:41Speaker 3: news I can find, which I'm a big fan of
- 27:43Speaker 3: News Nation and not Newsmax News Nation, I said, and
- 27:47Speaker 3: that was the headline, inflation going down. That's that was
- 27:51Speaker 3: the headline when I came in, text says Lie. All right,
- 27:55Speaker 3: is it a verb? I mean, am I supposed to
- 27:57Speaker 3: use it that way? I don't know. All right, So
- 28:02Speaker 3: there is a big story in the news that broke
- 28:05Speaker 3: last night. I'm gonna try to get into this a
- 28:07Speaker 3: little bit later on, and I know Hoppy is definitely
- 28:08Speaker 3: going to get into it. That is State Senator Mike
- 28:10Speaker 3: Maroney northern part of the state, busted for alleged indecent exposure.
- 28:17Speaker 3: It's a bizarre story. Hoppy is going to get into it.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Covered up at the top of the hour. I'll mention
- 28:21Speaker 3: a little bit later on if I get the opportunity.
- 28:24Speaker 3: I'm going to take a break. Last night, it was
- 28:26Speaker 3: a packed house at Valley Park and Hurricane and one
- 28:29Speaker 3: of the biggest crowds I've seen for a single event
- 28:30Speaker 3: in Putnam County in a long time, and I've lived
- 28:32Speaker 3: there for ten years. It has to do with Appleachian
- 28:34Speaker 3: Power proposing some much needed upgrades to the power transmission
- 28:37Speaker 3: systems in the area, and I talked talked to a
- 28:41Speaker 3: lot of people there last night, including folks from Appalachian Power,
- 28:44Speaker 3: and I thought it's my duty to give them an
- 28:47Speaker 3: opportunity to speak to it as well. So we're going
- 28:49Speaker 3: to be talking to George Porter from Appleachian Power when
- 28:52Speaker 3: we come back right after this on the Voice of Charleston.

- 32:01Speaker 3: decided yet. That's being discussed because one of the plans,
- 32:05Speaker 3: one of the and again not definite, not one hundred percent,
- 32:09Speaker 3: has it running through a portion of the Meek's mountain
- 32:11Speaker 3: trail systems. As I said, the first public gathering was
- 32:14Speaker 3: held last night in Hurricane at Valley Park. The second
- 32:16Speaker 3: will be held at the Winfield Community Center four thirty
- 32:19Speaker 3: to seven thirty this evening. Yesterday I had on Hurricane
- 32:22Speaker 3: Mayor Scott Edwards, who is vehemently, as I mentioned earlier,
- 32:25Speaker 3: posed to the plan. So in the interest of fairness,
- 32:28Speaker 3: I went to the meeting last night and struck up
- 32:31Speaker 3: some conversation with some folks from Apple Action Power. George
- 32:34Speaker 3: Porter is the director of communication for Apple Action Power
- 32:36Speaker 3: and he George is now George, good morning, welcome to the.
- 32:38Speaker 4: Show, one of daves.
- 32:41Speaker 3: You've got a really bad connection there, sir. Are you
- 32:44Speaker 3: still with me?
- 32:48Speaker 5: All right?
- 32:49Speaker 3: Georgie there?
- 32:52Speaker 5: Okay?
- 32:52Speaker 3: Are you anywhere where you could get to a landlined
- 32:54Speaker 3: or something? Because you are horrible right now, sir?
- 33:00Speaker 4: Try again?
- 33:00Speaker 3: Sorry, all right, it sounds good. Now wherever whatever you do,
- 33:03Speaker 3: and stop where you are right there, don't move, okay,
- 33:07Speaker 3: all right, let's just try to keep it here. Big
- 33:10Speaker 3: turnout last night at Valley Park. What did you hear, sir?
- 33:14Speaker 4: It was Hughes turnout. I think we had over five
- 33:17Speaker 4: hundre residents, a lot of passion, vocal community owners coming
- 33:22Speaker 4: out and giving us feedback and it was outstanding.
- 33:26Speaker 3: So explain what exactly the Let's talk about the project
- 33:30Speaker 3: as a whole. How did this whole thing come about
- 33:33Speaker 3: and what needs to be done. We'll get to the
- 33:35Speaker 3: routes and everything a little bit later on. As I said,
- 33:37Speaker 3: nothing has been decided yet, but what is the whole
- 33:39Speaker 3: idea behind having to do these upgrades?
- 33:43Speaker 4: So what happens is PGM is the regional Transmission organization
- 33:46Speaker 4: that monitors the grid every year. They're looking at opportunities
- 33:50Speaker 4: for us to do a better job to provide reliable service.
- 33:53Speaker 4: So they let us know that this area was one
- 33:55Speaker 4: that was struggling and reliability. So we asked us to
- 33:58Speaker 4: come up with a solution to provide better power and
- 34:01Speaker 4: it's just the solution was to rebuild this twenty mile
- 34:04Speaker 4: transmission line of the bank Croft Milton transmission project.
- 34:08Speaker 3: And so last night at the way the meeting works,
- 34:10Speaker 3: and I'll go ahead and give you a preview if
- 34:12Speaker 3: and I'm assuming the one in Winfield's going to work
- 34:14Speaker 3: the same. And by the way, if they have as
- 34:16Speaker 3: many people show up in Winfield as they did in
- 34:19Speaker 3: Valley Park last night, they're going to need a bigger
- 34:20Speaker 3: community center because there was a lot of people there
- 34:24Speaker 3: and now. And I think that's good and I think
- 34:26Speaker 3: even you folks would agree with that because it's about
- 34:28Speaker 3: getting information. But the way it worked last night is
- 34:31Speaker 3: you walk through the doors there at Valley Park and
- 34:34Speaker 3: you stood in a line and you worked your way
- 34:37Speaker 3: to the front of the line and you were getting
- 34:38Speaker 3: then given a comment card, and that comment you could
- 34:41Speaker 3: comment card. You could either fill it out there, you
- 34:43Speaker 3: could drop it into mail, you know, whatever you wanted
- 34:45Speaker 3: to do. But then when you walked into the main
- 34:47Speaker 3: area of the Valley Park Conference Center, that's where all
- 34:51Speaker 3: of the displays were set up, and you folks had
- 34:53Speaker 3: I'll give you credit. I mean, you guys really had
- 34:55Speaker 3: it nailed down as far as every corner you went
- 34:58Speaker 3: to in that very very large, the main area of
- 35:01Speaker 3: Valley Park, George, you had it pretty much every space
- 35:05Speaker 3: taken in there with people that can ask specific questions.
- 35:08Speaker 3: If I am a you know, if I've got a
- 35:11Speaker 3: home that could be somewhere in the middle of all this,
- 35:13Speaker 3: then I could go to this section. If I was
- 35:15Speaker 3: concerned as most people were last night about the Meek's
- 35:18Speaker 3: Mountain trails, I could go to that section. That's it.
- 35:22Speaker 3: It's pretty well organized there. Well.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Uh, and again you guys still hear me. So the
- 35:34Speaker 4: object behind is to always make sure we have you've
- 35:40Speaker 4: done it, yeah, cross.
- 35:44Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, George. Uh, wherever you were, we're gonna
- 35:47Speaker 3: need you to go back there.
- 35:50Speaker 4: What about now?
- 35:50Speaker 5: All right?
- 35:50Speaker 3: Are you're good? Now, you're good? Now, go ahead.
- 35:53Speaker 4: You know, we've done this long enough to know that
- 35:55Speaker 4: not every proper owner has the same concern and so
- 35:58Speaker 4: I'm going to show up with environmentally so we're going
- 36:00Speaker 4: to show up with aesthetics. They're worried about the look
- 36:03Speaker 4: of the structures. Some were worried about the roads that
- 36:07Speaker 4: are going to be need to be built for the products.
- 36:10Speaker 4: We try to have every subject matter expert available to
- 36:13Speaker 4: answer every question at the open house. You know, it's
- 36:16Speaker 4: us a long time to get to that process well
- 36:20Speaker 4: on the way, but I think we have a pretty
- 36:22Speaker 4: good process and as you saw that, we think it
- 36:25Speaker 4: worked very well.
- 36:26Speaker 3: So the majority of people, as I said, George, and
- 36:28Speaker 3: when this first came to light, was people concerned about
- 36:30Speaker 3: the Meeks Mountain trail system in Putnam County. This was
- 36:33Speaker 3: something that was a lot of volunteer hours went into
- 36:37Speaker 3: Anywhere from one to three hundred people that's estimated use
- 36:40Speaker 3: those trails on a daily basis. There's an economic impact.
- 36:43Speaker 3: I know, I saw restaurant owners there last time, I
- 36:45Speaker 3: saw other people. What would you say to people that
- 36:47Speaker 3: are concerned about and again, nothing is final, let's keep
- 36:50Speaker 3: that in mind. Nothing is final. But what would you
- 36:52Speaker 3: say to the people that were concerned, specifically George about
- 36:55Speaker 3: the Meeks Mountain trail system.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Well, you know number one mentioned get as many people
- 37:03Speaker 4: out doing that. Actually we did not think we know,
- 37:11Speaker 4: so we community to help us in those caps. So
- 37:14Speaker 4: have those business owners and a Meek trail. I can't
- 37:18Speaker 4: get all.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Right, George, George, this is not working, buddy, this is
- 37:26Speaker 3: not working. We're exactly are you on the Meeks Mountain trail? Now?
- 37:31Speaker 3: Where are you.
- 37:34Speaker 4: A headquarters there?
- 37:37Speaker 5: I'm building?
- 37:42Speaker 3: Okay, Uh, if you're at a headquarters, can you get
- 37:44Speaker 3: to a landline and call us back?
- 37:47Speaker 5: Yep, we'll do that, all right.
- 37:48Speaker 3: Let's try that. All right, all right, Coop, he's going
- 37:50Speaker 3: to get to a landline and try to call us back. Hey,
- 37:53Speaker 3: they're in the power business. They're not in the cell business.
- 37:55Speaker 3: But while we're at it, maybe we could try to
- 37:57Speaker 3: work on sales service. So I'm not really sure. I
- 37:58Speaker 3: know George works out of Roanoke. I'm not exactly sure
- 38:01Speaker 3: where he is this morning. I heard the word headquarters
- 38:03Speaker 3: was all I was able to hear in there. I
- 38:07Speaker 3: got a couple of texts I'll read while we're waiting
- 38:08Speaker 3: on George to call back. The Dave Island showing five
- 38:10Speaker 3: any Live has brought to you part by your hometown
- 38:12Speaker 3: baseball team, The Charles the Dirty Birds. The Birds continue
- 38:15Speaker 3: their three game series in Lexnington tonight. For tickets promotion schedules,
- 38:18Speaker 3: Dirty Birds geared more of is a dirty Birds Baseball
- 38:21Speaker 3: dot comtext says they're going to say whatever they need to,
- 38:24Speaker 3: but the real reasons are to increase shareholder profits. They're
- 38:27Speaker 3: in the business to make money, regardless of the community wishes,
- 38:30Speaker 3: says a text. Texas says, I was there. The power
- 38:34Speaker 3: company did a great job of training their employees to
- 38:36Speaker 3: sell the plant to the citizens. They used employees that
- 38:39Speaker 3: actually live in Putnam County. The employees obviously are not
- 38:42Speaker 3: going to speak against their employer for threat of losing
- 38:44Speaker 3: their careers. Basically AEP, but local citizen AEP employees in
- 38:48Speaker 3: an impossible situation. They were forced to speak positively on
- 38:51Speaker 3: the project in an attempt to persuade people. It was
- 38:54Speaker 3: kind of sad to watch the people spoke loud and clear.
- 38:56Speaker 3: They better come up with an alternative plan, says a
- 38:59Speaker 3: tex All right, I think George is back. Georgia. There
- 39:07Speaker 3: you go.
- 39:08Speaker 5: All right?
- 39:09Speaker 4: Do that sound better?
- 39:09Speaker 3: You sound better?
- 39:10Speaker 2: You sound sorry about that?
- 39:12Speaker 3: That's all right, It happens, It happens, all right. So
- 39:14Speaker 3: when we left off, we were talking about those that
- 39:16Speaker 3: are specifically concerned about the Meeks Mountain Trail system. So
- 39:19Speaker 3: start that answer over again.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Yeah, So you know, number one, we love the passion.
- 39:23Speaker 4: You know, it's something that we ask for, you know,
- 39:26Speaker 4: we actually community to come out. That's where we are
- 39:28Speaker 4: in the process. We're trying to get that feedback, and
- 39:31Speaker 4: we understand there's been unfortunately a lot of misinformation, but
- 39:34Speaker 4: we feel like last night was an opportunity for the
- 39:37Speaker 4: majority of people to come out and hear the actual
- 39:39Speaker 4: process and here are the steps we plan to take
- 39:42Speaker 4: to make sure we minimize impacts if we decided to
- 39:46Speaker 4: go that route again, like you said before day, we
- 39:48Speaker 4: haven't made a decision yet. We have to take all
- 39:50Speaker 4: that feedback from last night as well as tonight and
- 39:53Speaker 4: go back with our team and take a look at it.
- 39:55Speaker 3: And you said there's been a lot of misinformation out there.
- 39:57Speaker 3: Can you give us an example of that.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Yeah. I think one of the most important things is,
- 40:01Speaker 4: you know, when you look at the map, you see
- 40:02Speaker 4: a lot of different routes, and a lot of people
- 40:04Speaker 4: last night thought we were building all those routes. So
- 40:07Speaker 4: last night was an opportunity to kind of square that
- 40:09Speaker 4: away and say no, we're only looking at one of
- 40:10Speaker 4: these as a possible option. So that was Ben's information.
- 40:14Speaker 4: You know, I've heard a lot of words demolished the trails.
- 40:17Speaker 4: You know, if it ends up we end up going
- 40:19Speaker 4: that way, that is something that we would never do.
- 40:22Speaker 4: You know. We understand the importance of this to the community.
- 40:24Speaker 4: We understand the impact that it has on the community,
- 40:27Speaker 4: So we would never work to demolish or destroy anything.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Is George, is there a place again we're talking to
- 40:32Speaker 3: George Porter's, director of communications for Appalachic Power. Is there
- 40:36Speaker 3: a place online where people can go take a look
- 40:38Speaker 3: at it for themselves if they can't make it to
- 40:40Speaker 3: the meetings last night and hurricane and tonight at Winfield
- 40:42Speaker 3: that they can't make it. Is that information available online somewhere?
- 40:46Speaker 4: It absolutely is. We have a website Appalachicpower dot com
- 40:49Speaker 4: slash Bancroft Milton, that's the project website. We have a
- 40:53Speaker 4: virtual website there so if you're not able to make it,
- 40:56Speaker 4: you can go in and you can see all the
- 40:57Speaker 4: information that we're going to have set up tonight. We
- 41:00Speaker 4: also have an opportunity for you to fill out of
- 41:01Speaker 4: comment card online and that's another thing I want to
- 41:04Speaker 4: make sure we mentioned Dave. With every comment, whether it
- 41:07Speaker 4: be one or one thousand, we're going to take a
- 41:09Speaker 4: look at We're going to read every one of them,
- 41:10Speaker 4: we're gonna digitize them, we're gonna put them on the map,
- 41:12Speaker 4: and we're going to look at them, and we're gonna
- 41:13Speaker 4: evaluate them.
- 41:14Speaker 3: So as we close, George and I appreciate you taking
- 41:16Speaker 3: time out of your schedule to be here. What is
- 41:18Speaker 3: the message that you'd like to give to the people
- 41:20Speaker 3: of Putnham County about these projects right now?
- 41:23Speaker 4: The most important thing is we're early you know, we're
- 41:26Speaker 4: still in the planning stage, and this is the time
- 41:28Speaker 4: when if they are adjustments that can be made and
- 41:30Speaker 4: need to be made, this is when we need to
- 41:32Speaker 4: make them. So this is an opportunity to come out
- 41:35Speaker 4: voice your opinion, provide us with the feedback. Like I
- 41:38Speaker 4: said before, in it's you know, we talk a lot
- 41:40Speaker 4: about Miexed Mountain Trail, but there's also twenty other miles
- 41:42Speaker 4: along this process, over a thousand other property owners that
- 41:46Speaker 4: could be impacted. So you know, we have a lot
- 41:48Speaker 4: of decisions to make and we're early on and we're
- 41:50Speaker 4: going to make sure we do our due diligence and
- 41:52Speaker 4: make sure we do it right.
- 41:53Speaker 3: All right, George, I appreciate you being here and going
- 41:55Speaker 3: through what you did to get through to us.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Man.
- 41:57Speaker 3: I appreciate it very very much. Job Dave, So George,
- 42:00Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, George Porter
- 42:02Speaker 3: again as the director of Communications for Appalachian Power. The
- 42:05Speaker 3: Dave Allen Show and five eighty line, presented in part

- 42:13Speaker 3: General Hardware wv dot com. And again the second of
- 42:16Speaker 3: those meetings will be held this evening at the Community
- 42:20Speaker 3: Center in Winfield. They start around four thirty. They'll wrap
- 42:22Speaker 3: up to seven thirty, and again, it sounds like a
- 42:24Speaker 3: lot when you say four thirty to seven thirty, but
- 42:26Speaker 3: the way these things are set up, and I intended
- 42:28Speaker 3: last nights, it's really you're not going to stay there
- 42:31Speaker 3: the whole time. You can stay if you want to,
- 42:34Speaker 3: but you just kind of drift in. You have to register.
- 42:36Speaker 3: There's a registration process. They then give you a comment card.
- 42:39Speaker 3: You drop those comments in if you want to take
- 42:41Speaker 3: a little bit more time you want to take it
- 42:43Speaker 3: home and take it, take a look at it. You can,
- 42:45Speaker 3: and then you just look at the maps and you
- 42:47Speaker 3: look and you ask the questions of the people that
- 42:50Speaker 3: are that are there, And many people did last night,
- 42:53Speaker 3: As I said, probably the one of the biggest events
- 42:55Speaker 3: I've ever attended as far as people numbers go. In
- 42:59Speaker 3: Day's Valley. Last night was that event. This one of
- 43:01Speaker 3: the night at the Winfield Community Center starts at four
- 43:04Speaker 3: thirty and will wrap up till seven thirty.
- 43:06Speaker 4: SI.
- 43:06Speaker 3: If you don't get off work till six or six thirty,
- 43:08Speaker 3: you can just go straight there. People are doing it
- 43:10Speaker 3: in a variety of different ways. Tex says the communication
- 43:13Speaker 3: director can't properly communicate. Bodes well for the Meeks Mountain Trail,
- 43:17Speaker 3: says the text Well, I was kidding him about actually
- 43:19Speaker 3: being on the trail.
- 43:20Speaker 5: He was not.
- 43:20Speaker 3: He was in an office building somewhere. So once we
- 43:22Speaker 3: got into an old fashioned landline, something to be said
- 43:25Speaker 3: for that he was able to communicate with us there.

- 46:11Speaker 3: you're on the air.
- 46:13Speaker 7: Hey Dave. About these projects, sir? Two things real quick.
- 46:20Speaker 7: Back a few years ago, the federal government built these
- 46:23Speaker 7: housing projects Oliver Putnam County. The residents had no says
- 46:29Speaker 7: like well, Tornado was in Kanall County, Hurricane Winfield, Tey's
- 46:36Speaker 7: Valley built in all these giant housing projects right in
- 46:40Speaker 7: the middle of these nice communities. Imported people out of state.
- 46:45Speaker 7: I mean it is a travesty. I mean went the
- 46:49Speaker 7: town of Winfield had a murder within the first six
- 46:52Speaker 7: months and the people don't have no stay on these projects,
- 46:57Speaker 7: like Teen's Valley wide project. They had a meeting that
- 47:02Speaker 7: teased out Christian School. Nobody knew about it, and they
- 47:08Speaker 7: talk about lighting the roads, but then sidewalks and a
- 47:12Speaker 7: bike lane, right the mental tas value. You got to
- 47:15Speaker 7: be kidding me. Yeah, the people were saying, you know,
- 47:20Speaker 7: we need a bike lane. They don't live on that
- 47:22Speaker 7: main road. How would you like if they came up
- 47:26Speaker 7: in your subdivision, build sidewalks and have a strangers biking
