- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good Morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day. To record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the. World.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody, good morning from
- 0:29the chicken coop. So one of the quirkiest things
- 0:32about having chickens is that the Roosters actually do
- 0:37multifunction. OK, everyone thinks that, you
- 0:40know, Roosters are hellacious and, you know, they're hard to
- 0:44handle. But when you get really good
- 0:45Roosters, they are unbelievable at creating a peace and a calm
- 0:50among all the girls. Now, we all know that there are
- 0:54a ton of phrases out there in the world that really to
- 0:58chickens like, you know, being all cooped up, you've heard me
- 1:00talk about them before. They're there for a reason.
- 1:02But one of the ones that I absolutely love to observe is
- 1:05when the girls get into an argument, when they get into a
- 1:08squabble, how quickly the Roosters come to break it up and
- 1:12they don't hurt the girls. They separate them and then as
- 1:15soon and they watch to see if they go back at it because often
- 1:19the girls are like guys in a bar who can't stop fighting.
- 1:23They will just keep going at each other.
- 1:25And I just witnessed it, which made me laugh.
- 1:27And I said, you know what, I have to share this observation
- 1:29because it's so funny how they're like humans.
- 1:32Two of the girls got very worked up about a snack I brought out
- 1:35and they were like, they saw it. They both went at it.
- 1:39One of them got aggravated that the other one went after it.
- 1:41And blueberries, by the way, in case anyone's interested in what
- 1:44it was, berries. And sure enough, they went at
- 1:48each other. Now, one of them is my
- 1:50Americana, who's called Hootie because she looks like an owl.
- 1:54She has the little puffy cheeks that puff out.
- 1:57So she looks like an owl. And she's very much a loner and
- 2:00she often stays to herself. And yes, chickens all have their
- 2:04individual personalities and she definitely has her individual
- 2:08personality. And ever since she was little,
- 2:10she's just been different than the other birds.
- 2:12So I just, I don't know, I except her for who she is.
- 2:17And then one of the other birds is one of the Gray girls who
- 2:20just gets constantly into everything.
- 2:23She's Miss Curiosity. So you can see their
- 2:25personalities already don't match.
- 2:28And as soon as they, those Gray girls, there's eight of them and
- 2:32they're referred to as the Gray girls because they all came at
- 2:35the same time. And they're all, other than
- 2:37their Combs being a little bit different, they all look exactly
- 2:40the same, slightly different shades of Gray, but they all
- 2:44look very much it's the same. And they are super curious
- 2:48birds. So obviously going at Hootie is
- 2:52not a good thing because they are not going to be OK with it.
- 2:55And you know, it's, it's just they're going to go right at
- 3:00each other. In any event, this is what
- 3:03happened. And immediately, immediately
- 3:06they start jumping at each other.
- 3:07And yes, chickens do that. They jump up at each other with
- 3:10their feet out and their claws out so that they can try to hurt
- 3:13each other. And lo and behold, there was a
- 3:16rooster nearby. Rufus was right nearby, and he
- 3:19came running right over to stop it immediately.
- 3:21Because if he hadn't, they would have kept going and they would
- 3:24have hurt each other. But because he's here, he's like
- 3:27the emotional police. He stops everything.
- 3:30He doesn't let them, you know, get sucked into each other.
- 3:34And I love that about him. He's a really awesome rooster.
- 3:38He's got a personality of being somebody who pays attention.
- 3:43He's super brave. He's he puts all the chickens
- 3:46away. The moment something goes on in
- 3:48the sky, he gets those girls hidden.
- 3:51And I'm, and I just can't help but thinking to myself how much
- 3:55they are just like us in so many ways.
- 3:59And when I observe how he separates them because they're
- 4:01having an argument over something, how different is that
- 4:04than people? We all need people to help us
- 4:07separate, help us pull ourselves out of it.
- 4:10And it, it's such an easy thing. It's like when you when you look
- 4:13at it and you see the direct correlation between how they
- 4:17act, someone's there. You think about school, you
- 4:20think about our close quarters, you think about the police, you
- 4:22think about all these things. And it's throughout nature.
- 4:25It's throughout nature. Everything, every, every system
- 4:28has its dominant and it has its submissive.
- 4:33Every system has all of these things where it needs
- 4:36protection. And it makes us realize that we
- 4:39are not so fabulous as we think. We are not so elevated.
- 4:43Just because we don't speak a language of chicken doesn't mean
- 4:47that we can't see how they communicate.
- 4:50Just because I don't speak the language of trees doesn't mean
- 4:53that I can't understand what's happening.
- 4:55You know, it's, it's amazing how 1 you lose 1 tree in the storm
- 5:00or you lose a section of a tree in a storm and then all of a
- 5:03sudden there's a gap and something else immediately fills
- 5:06it in. It's like another tree knows
- 5:08right away, oh, I can grow there or this can happen.
- 5:11We have had all these live oaks on the farm and they were
- 5:14blocked by tree pine trees. And we have tons of pine trees
- 5:19and they break really easy because they, the roots are not
- 5:22deep here. And they're dangerous actually
- 5:25in a lot of ways because they break so easily.
- 5:28And we took out some of the pine trees to give those live oaks
- 5:32space to grow, and they immediately transformed.
- 5:36It was like a breath of fresh air for them.
- 5:39So the point of this all is observing what's around you,
- 5:43observing that we are not so oh so special and that crazy
- 5:48enough, we're a lot more like chickens than we think.
- 5:51All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:53will see you tomorrow. Bye.
