- 1:21Money. This is the seventh episode of the series. Original air date November
- 1:26fourteenth of nineteen fifty four, and the title is gallopin Ivories. The National
- 1:49Broadcasting Company presents another program in a new series exposing the inside secrets of gamblers,
- 1:55racketeers, and con men. It's called easy Money, Easy Money.
- 2:01There's no such thing as easy money. Mike Trent, the ex magician turned
- 2:07rackets detective, is an expert on easy money schemes, gyps, frauds,
- 2:10and swindles. Tonight he blows the lid off of one of the vicious gambling
- 2:15rackets that's being worked in this country year after year. This one's called galloping
- 2:20ivories, and here's Mike Trent to tell you about it. Thank you.
- 2:23Though, the good professional gamblers are so used to trimming their victims that sometimes
- 2:28they get impatient. They see a chance for a fast cleanup and they jump
- 2:31at it, especially if they feel they've got a soft touch for their prey.
- 2:36My story tonight is about a big operator who got mixed up with some
- 2:38kids who came mighty close to reckon their lives. It opens in the back
- 2:44room of one of the suburban gambling clubs, where the boss's right hand man
- 2:46had just brought in his report of the night's receipts. It's nice night,
- 2:51So that's the biggest take we've had in three weeks. Yeah, only look,
- 2:54gammer given this kid, Junior Alwyn Sky high credit. That don't seems
- 3:00so sharp. No, how much did he lose tonight? Eight hundred and
- 3:02twenty bucks. All we got is this little piece of paper eight twenty Hey,
- 3:07that makes seven thousand, one hundred and sixty dollars all together. Yeah,
- 3:13I'll take all that kind of paper I can get. We're gonna how
- 3:15you're gonna collect his old man said the last time he settled up, he
- 3:20wasn't paying any more craft game. That's for Junior. I know, old
- 3:23man el When ain't the kind of guy we will stand for muscles. Don't
- 3:28worry. I'm not planning to put any heat on Junior's daddy. I don't
- 3:31get it. That's fine, Sophie. If you don't get it, Junior
- 3:35won't either. You and young a wonner about on a par on brains.
- 3:38Look, boss, you don't need to get mast, don't I listen?
- 3:43Sobie, I'd like to run that Junior. L want to count up to
- 3:46about fifteen thousand dollars? You mean fast fast? Give the kid a break,
- 3:52let him double up, get him to shoot the works, tind to
- 3:57get eaten. You're gonna let him get even now, what do you think
- 4:00the minute the bell gets up to fifteen? Grand teley kid? I want
- 4:03to see him. Well, if you say so, I do say so,
- 4:06and don't scare him. Be nice to you. I should be nice
- 4:11to a dumb phony. You owes us all that door or what? So
- 4:15I'm playing for big steak, Soapy. Fifteen thousand dollars is just my first
- 4:18roll. Okay, Gunner, you're gonna roll like that. Be sure you're
- 4:23throwing your own dice, Soapy. When I gamble, I never take chances.
- 4:41Well, mister Irwin, I haven't seen you for a long time.
- 4:44Have a chair. Thanks. Your dice man said that you wanted to see
- 4:48me, Gunner. If it's about money, money, what's that? Your
- 4:53credit's always good for a few hundred dollars my gambling club Jr. Thanks.
- 4:57I know your father gives you a nice allowance. I know you're the kind
- 5:00of fellow who thinks a gambling dead is important. You're a gentleman. Thanks
- 5:03again. If you for dollars doesn't mean any more to you than it does
- 5:06to me. If you don't have it, I know you will get it.
- 5:11I've been having a lousy run of luck lately, Gunner, but it's
- 5:14bound to change sooner or later. I never worry much about gambling low.
- 5:17That's one of the things I like about you. Junior. Wow, bet
- 5:20you can run up a bill of fifteen hundred dollars without batting an eyelash.
- 5:25Yeah. Sure, you're an actual gambler, the smart kind of a gambler.
- 5:30Why I haven't even checked on your account? Fine, by the way,
- 5:33Jr. How does your account stand? Why I've been having rotten luck
- 5:38Gunner? Well that's what you told me. Wow, how rotten? I
- 5:43owe you fifteen thousand dollars fifteen that's an awful lot of money, Junior.
- 5:51I'm a little surprised. I'll pay off. Don't you worry. I never
- 5:56worry about anybody paying off. Uh face? Thanks? Where will you get
- 6:03fifteen thousand dollars? Wait, I'll get it where I'll borrow it. You
- 6:09couldn't borrow fifteen bucks, Well it'll take a few days, of course.
- 6:13Brucker up your lips more when you're whistling the dark kid, I give you
- 6:16six months. You couldn't raise the money anyway, shorter killing your old man.
- 6:21You've been playing me for a sap, and I'm getting sore. You
- 6:24said I could have all the credit I wanted. You let me want shut
- 6:27up the anything I hate. It's a whiny looser. I'm not whiny.
- 6:30You get right on sumbling up until you found yourself on a spot. I'm
- 6:32not in a spot. Oh no, well guess again, ju And yeah,
- 6:34you're in a real spot. What do you mean I run this gambling
- 6:40club to make money? Maybe that never occurred to you. If I let
- 6:44one looser welch on me get by without paying, I quit making money.
- 6:48I said i'd pay. I have a couple of pretty fair ways to collect,
- 6:51kid, collect or else you wouldn't dare. Oh, don't lay any
- 6:56yards in that one. Kid, And you're in a place like mine,
- 6:59you'd be surprised. But your dad, what do you want me to do?
- 7:02Well, now you're talking sense. Well, you run around with a
- 7:08pretty speedy bunch of kids. You want me to steer some of my friends
- 7:11to your club. I wouldn't have them cluttering up the place, but i'd
- 7:16like to meet a few of them outside. What do you mean, from
- 7:21what I read in the papers, you're quite a party boy. Well,
- 7:26well, I like parties too. I'd like to be invited to a few
- 7:31parties of yours. I don't get it. You and I are going to
- 7:35be partners, junior partner. We're gonna palle around together. You introduce me
- 7:40as a friend who's just come to town. We start a few little five
- 7:44dollars crap games. I still don't get the idea. You can't make up
- 7:47fifteen thousand dollars in a five dollar game? Did you ever see a five
- 7:51dollar crap game? Stay in that class. You started playing here with dollar
- 7:56chips. You owe me fifteen grand get me the suckers. You're fifteen thousand
- 8:01back and a lot more. Besides, I couldn't do that to my friends.
- 8:05Oh no, I'll bet you could, Junior. And what's more,
- 8:07I bet you will. I'll bet you two to one. Wanted sake,
- 8:15No, I guess not. It looks like they're your dice. Sonn Gorman
- 8:28was the life of your party. That's the funny part of it, mister
- 8:31Trenty was everybody liked him. And he didn't even suggest the crap game.
- 8:35I suppose you did, yes when he gave me the high sign. And
- 8:39I'll bet Gunner Gorman was lucky, wasn't he? Well? Not at first?
- 8:43Oh no, no, not while you were shooting for five dollars a
- 8:45roll. I suppose not. The game couldn't have been crooked, mister trent
- 8:48They were my dice. But Gorman knows something about the game. I don't
- 8:52know how much did he win? Five thousand dollars? He said it cut
- 8:56my loss to twelve five hundred because we're partners and I get credit for twenty
- 8:58five. He's getting a friend's a chance to get their money back. Of
- 9:03course. Oh yes, he put on a good act like he was embarrassed
- 9:07at taking their money. Sounds like a very clever operator. He's taking a
- 9:11hotel room and the rest of the crowd think he's just in town for a
- 9:13few days. He's throwing a party at the hotel tonight to give them a
- 9:18chance to get even. Well, just where does this concern me? Well,
- 9:22I may be a heel. Everybody seems to think so, even Gorman
- 9:26at least. I've been a prize sap. But I'm darned if I'll double
- 9:30cross my friends. You've already done that, haven't you. Well I was
- 9:33scared, I guess, and there didn't seem to be anything else to do
- 9:37until I saw Gunner Gorman take their money because they trusted me. Well,
- 9:41what do you expect me to do about it? Well? I may be
- 9:43dumb, but I don't think Gorman's on the level. If he is,
- 9:46I'll go to Dad and take my medicine, whatever it is. But if
- 9:50he isn't playing fair, I'd like to catch him, and for what you've
- 9:54told me about him. Gorman will be rough if he finds that you're double
- 9:56crossing him as well as everybody else. I guess that coming to me all
- 10:00right, Well, it's nothing to wat your laup coming off. Gorman discovers
- 10:03you're trying to trap them. I thought it was your business to catch crook
- 10:05at gambler's racketeers. Oh it is, it is. But there's one type
- 10:09of gambler I dislike almost as much as the crooks, and you're that type.
- 10:13True people will get a big thrill out of hobnobbing with dirty, cheating
- 10:18criminals until their charming friends take them and then come crying for help. But
- 10:20I'm not crying for myself. I can't let him rob my friends on my
- 10:24safe. I don't even know that the man's a crook. He wouldn't need
- 10:28to be, you know, to win so surely and certainly. Oh,
- 10:31Gorman knows the dice ods backward and forward. He knows his chances on every
- 10:33roll of the dice. He could play percentages and win a sooner or later,
- 10:37in the most honest game in the world, he'd clean them out because
- 10:39dice is his business, and he knows his business. Went five thousand dollars
- 10:43in one little glo. There's no rougher, tougher, faster form of gambling
- 10:46ever been invented. One flop of the dice, he can make more money
- 10:48than a whole evening of poker. Five thousand dollars would make me think Gorman
- 10:52was holding back one of my best friends, Marge. Terrence lost fifteen hundred
- 10:56of it. That makes me feel worse than anything else. She well,
- 11:01I'm sort of crazy hutter in it. Wait a minute, you mean there
- 11:03were girls in this dice game and will be in the next one. Yes,
- 11:07mister trend. That's why i'd appreciate your help. Well, I won't
- 11:11take the case to help you with your friends. You all need a good
- 11:15spanking when you need help. But you will take the case. Yeah,
- 11:18on one condition. What's that It's understood. I'm doing it strictly to put
- 11:22Gorman in his place. Sweat does nothing swell about it? Do you have
- 11:26a revolver? Gosh, no, I'd be scared to death. And why
- 11:28you're going to be scared because you'll be carrying one, But why you might
- 11:31need it. You've crossed up your dad and he's taken it. You've crossed
- 11:35up your friends. They don't know it. They wouldn't do much about it
- 11:37if they did, probably, But if Gunner Gorman ever finds you're double crossing
- 11:41him, you think he'd get tough. Well. I think there's undoubtedly a
- 11:43very good reason for his nickname being Gunner. I don't know why you feel
- 11:56it's so big about winning five grand at a party. Ain't does better than
- 12:00that most any night? Were you going to meet some nice people at the
- 12:03party? Soapie? Me listen, God, I hadn't I told you,
- 12:05Sophie, you're gonna be my butler this evening? Me cotton praise the sandwiches
- 12:11around. Look, bus I stood for a lot. But if it's a
- 12:13chance to see the elite a play, Soapy, I suppose you want me
- 12:18to be loaded down with fake dice, like a old copy of the Police
- 12:20Cascente. Oh, don't be naive, Sofie, don't be huh. We
- 12:26won't use odd dice? Are you kidding to bring their own dice? These
- 12:31are respectable people Sophie, I never see the guy so respectable. I trust
- 12:35his dice. You gotta be sure of winn an, ain't you now?
- 12:37When don't you worry your little brain about that? You ain't no dice mccanic.
- 12:41I don't have to be, not with a thick pile of rug on
- 12:45the floor of our hotel sweep and with a good thick pad beneath it.
- 12:50Huh, listen, Gunny, you would't give him the old blanket roll?
- 12:54Now why not? You couldn't get away with anywhere crapshure in the country doesn't
- 12:58know, but the soft roll not dealing with crapshooters. Soaphie, I'm playing
- 13:03with wealthy no goods who want to thrill. I have so much money.
- 13:05The only kind they'll show any interest in is easy money. I'll be disappointed
- 13:09if I don't win fifty thousand dollars tonight, and they'll come back and back.
- 13:15This is just a start. You'll have to give Junior album half the
- 13:18profits, won't you. Oh you need a head cleaning, Sophy. Yeah,
- 13:22to tonight. My partnership with Junior is dissolved. Well can you do
- 13:26that? He might squawk. He wouldn't there he lets these SAPs know anything.
- 13:30They'll find out he was working with May helping play them for suck,
- 13:33because you think he'd do that. Who'd be coming around here with the sun
- 13:37still out? We'll get the door find out. Oh hello, Junior,
- 13:43Hi, gunna see, I thought i'd better warn you there may be trouble
- 13:46tonight. Oh ah, listen, bright boy, there's any trouble. You
- 13:52know who wind up with it, don't you? Yeah, that's why I
- 13:56thought I should tell you. All right, what's up? You remember Marge
- 13:58Terence, the girl who lost so much? How could I forget her?
- 14:01Well, her brother found out about it, and he's kind of a hot
- 14:03head. You don't say, well, what about a brother? Well,
- 14:07he blames me for letting Marge lose so much money, and he threatened me.
- 14:11Threatened. Yeah, how he said, unless I brought him to your
- 14:13party tonight, he beat me up. He wants a chance to win that
- 14:16money back for Marge. Man. Just when you get to thinking Christmas is
- 14:20five or six weeks away, here comes Santa Claus. Don't be too sure.
- 14:26Tim Terrence has a reputation for being awfully lucky. Oh, I like
- 14:28him lucky. The rest of the Cloud's going to the theater just as they'd
- 14:31plan and then dropping in here afterwards. But Marge's brother, Tim's his name.
- 14:37He wanted to come up here earlier with margin me just can't wait.
- 14:39Eh, mister Gorman, I know you think you're pretty hot with the dice,
- 14:45but I'm warning you. Tim Terrance is plenty lucky. Well, maybe
- 14:48his luck'st for a change. Bring him around. The earlier the better.
- 14:52Oh, don't say I didn't warn you. I won't you. Yeah,
- 14:56I won't say a thing except thanks. Oh, mister Gorman, I think
- 15:11you're butler or ballet or whatever. He is is a character. Where in
- 15:15the world did you ever find him? I picked him up in a rough
- 15:18and rugged gambling giant, Miss Terrence. He's a real authentic type and such
- 15:22a wonderful name, Sophie, all right, cut it off. I haven't
- 15:26met mister Gorman yet. Oh, pardon me. This is Marge's brother,
- 15:30Gunner, Tim Terrence. How do you know you folks are a little early?
- 15:33Yeah. Your march told me how you took her money last night.
- 15:37Wow, she didn't have very good life. I'm sure it was luck.
- 15:45Luck Jimmy, be nice. Now, I don't like cracks like that,
- 15:58Sarah. I don't like having my sister margin lose fifteen hundred dollars either.
- 16:03Oh, tempt be yourself. I can afford you. He doesn't know a
- 16:06thing about the game. Shooting craps with hers like taking pennies out of a
- 16:08baby's piggy b luck, Terrence, I didn't ask her into the game.
- 16:11The game wasn't even my idea. She lost money doesn't mean anything to me.
- 16:17I'm giving her every chance the world to get it back. You better
- 16:19be careful about your insinuations. Well you sound very noble, mister Gorman.
- 16:25Yeah, you're a great guy, all right, taking money away from a
- 16:26girl who doesn't even know what the game is all about. There's some boss
- 16:30you want me to give this bird of bumps. I stay out of this,
- 16:32Sophie. I suppose you're quite a crap sure to yourself, mister Terrance,
- 16:37you bet, I am. Oh, he's simply wonderful. He's won
- 16:41money from real professionals. You don't say he talks to the dice. He
- 16:47says the craziest things about fever and nicator and new shoes, and go ahead
- 16:52to me tell them some of the things I think I've heard them. Lady,
- 16:56Eh, you're uh real hot crop shooter. I do enough to cool
- 17:02you off, and you need to be taught a lesson. You think you
- 17:03could do it? Huh? You bet I can. I just assume take
- 17:07your money as your sister, I just bet you would. Well, it
- 17:10looks to me like there's only one way to settle this. Oh yeah,
- 17:12sure, with the dice, you and Tim, but I want to play
- 17:15too. You stay out of this much. I'm gonna give Gorman a lesson
- 17:18he needs. I'm not in the habit of carrying dice around with me.
- 17:22It just happens. I got some in my pocket bus here. I'll just
- 17:26take a look at those. If you don't mind, Oh sure, go
- 17:29right ahead, look him over all. You like you think I'm a crack
- 17:33Huh, I'm reserving my opinion. Give him the sinkerd test if you want
- 17:37to go ahead. The sinker test isn't the terminology of this game fascinating?
- 17:41I love it? What does it mean? The sincred test means, lady,
- 17:45that you drop the dice in a tall glass of water. Let him
- 17:48sink to the bottom. I can't imagine why anybody would drop dice into a
- 17:52glass of water on a counter. You can tell that way if the dice
- 17:56is loaded. If the same points come up every time you drop them,
- 17:59well they are the loaded. Well he seemed to be, all right,
- 18:04of course there are. Oh we'll have to clear all this stuff off the
- 18:08table before we can shoot. Oh well, that's too much trouble. Get
- 18:11down on the floor, on the rug. It's more fun that way on
- 18:15the rug. Well, yeah, sure, okay, I'll bet ten dollars.
- 18:19Ah, ten dollars. I thought you were such a red hot spot.
- 18:25Well before you get red hot, Garman, you have to get warmed
- 18:27up a little, you know. Ten dollars. Okay, big shit you,
- 18:30Kevin, go ahead, roll them out. I won't even bother looking
- 18:33for the kind of money. Oh, tim, but twelve the highest point
- 18:38you can make. That ought to be worth something that sparks cars. You
- 18:42get many of them, you ain't going to be traveling in style. I'll
- 18:45shoot another ten Gorman. Yeah, cavied big shits. Six deuced from the
- 18:51katah. All right, come on, I show the folks you know you're
- 18:53arithmetic. Let's make the point with a five three shake rattle. Rule two
- 18:59and two is four. That's half of what you're appening. We'll get the
- 19:02rest of it this time. Ch and six deu is right back. Okay,
- 19:07I'll let the twenty ride six two. But Timmy, you said you'd
- 19:11make the eight with a five to three. Does it come this way?
- 19:30I thought you wanted to get your sister's fifteen hundred back. We've been going
- 19:33half an hour and I'm seventy bucks ahead, and that's way. We'll shoot
- 19:37all night and nobody will get anywhere. Well, I dice haven't gotten hurt
- 19:40for me yet, I can tell yeah. Well, I'm tired of this
- 19:41paneatic stuff. Maybe your sister's ready to shoot for some real money. You'll
- 19:45keep out of this munchy. You're not gonna win her money back for this
- 19:48way. Your sister makes you look like a piker. All right, all
- 19:52right, if you feel that way about it, going and I'll tell you
- 19:53what I'll do. I'll shoot the whole fifteen hundred she lost all in one
- 19:56roll. Oh Timmy, that's a lot of money. Put it up,
- 19:59big shot. Well suppose you cover it too. It's miney, and I
- 20:03haven't got it covered. Don't worry, go ahead shooting, Oh, tim
- 20:08how wonderful A seven that d yeah, something tells me, well, I
- 20:14guess that was all I needed. Now I'm getting hot. I'll let the
- 20:15three thousand ride. Well you're cover, but boss, will you stay out
- 20:19of this? It's twenty five hundred, three thousand, go ahead, roll
- 20:23them out. Yeah you bet all right? Be good to Papa, Dice
- 20:26for three thousand, nice big dollars. Be alert, Dice, Come on
- 20:29you, Oh too bad? A five fee the good hot Dice. Let's
- 20:34five right back a bank of cop waiting for money, little old easy five.
- 20:38Come on, Dice, eight five deuce five for Papa. Just one
- 20:42little five is all I ask Sike that scroll. Oh I'll get closer than
- 20:47that. Come on, I'll be good, Dice. So I let the
- 20:52six thousand ride. Yeah, covered, bright boy, shut up? You
- 20:56covered, Tarrant showed. Okay, Dice. Let's seven eleven this time to
- 21:00break the monotony. Right high, wide and handsome on a way of prosperity.
- 21:03Dice. Oh, I'm sorry, Marge. I said i'd make an
- 21:07eleven, and it's a seven. But that wins. Tim. Boss,
- 21:11you're to call this way. You don't keep your mouth shut. You mean
- 21:14he's doing something crooked. I've been watching and I don't see anything you worn't.
- 21:18Is somebody insinuating him. I haven't said a thing. Bright boy,
- 21:21you're letting the twelve thousand ryds. If you can cover it. I can
- 21:25cover a lot more than that. Sonny, get the other bag out of
- 21:27the bedroom soaping bus. This is your thing, cape s tell soap when
- 21:32you get the bag. Okay, Timney, I think this is perfectly marvelous.
- 21:37And it's so honest too. What he told you how good he was
- 21:41before he started taking your money? Right? All right? They Yeah,
- 21:47bright boy, you think I'm gonna run short of money? Look it over?
- 21:49What there's a fortune in that bag. Yeah, anybody who's good enough
- 21:53to take it away from me can have it if they take it honest.
- 21:57Is that a crack? Oh No, I'm not saying a thing in twelve
- 22:00thousands covered. Go ahead, roll them out. Nothing won't give me more
- 22:03pleasure, mister Gorman, What would you like? What do you mean?
- 22:07What would I like? A point or a natural? Oh, don't be
- 22:10so smart. Just go ahead and roll all right, if that's the way
- 22:11you feel about it. Okay, tim aren't you forgetting something? What you
- 22:17aren't talking to the dice. Oh well, I don't have too much.
- 22:19With twenty four thousand dollars on the line, I don't want to disturb the
- 22:22dice. I'll just roll them out like this. You see, you win
- 22:26a four and a three, A beautiful four and three. Prettiest little dice
- 22:29faces I ever saw in my life. Just look at their eyes, all
- 22:30seven of all right, save the comedy. You ain't going to shut up,
- 22:34all right, Terrence, You've had your fun. What do you mean?
- 22:37I just wanted to see how far you'd go with it? What are
- 22:40you talking about? You think I'm a sap. You've been giving those dice
- 22:42the old blanket roll? What does he mean to you? He knows what
- 22:45I mean, all right. I've been watching him. He's been using a
- 22:48blanket roll every time. I don't see what you mean. Well, it
- 22:51looks like you'll have to tell them. I'll tell him, all right.
- 22:53On any soft surface, like a bet or a blanket or a rug of
- 22:57this kind, the dice roll in a stress straight line if you hold them
- 23:02right, you say here like this, What difference does it make whether they
- 23:04roll in a straight line or not? The difference between winning a fortune and
- 23:07depending on luck. I don't get it. I don't either. Oh that's
- 23:11because you're dopes. You hold the dice side beside in your hand. On
- 23:15the first roll, with the six on one dice facing an ace on the
- 23:19other. You see the two faces against each other, and there isn't a
- 23:22chance the world are rolling a deuce or a twelve, and the odds are
- 23:26two to one in your favor coming up with a seven. But you might
- 23:29explain the rest of it to him, goodman, On the off chance that
- 23:33you roll a point, the faces of the dice you hold against each other
- 23:34determine how you'll make the point. You see the dice roll over and over,
- 23:38but not side, so you admit you were using the blanket roll.
- 23:41I never said I wasn't the boss rider to let him get away with it
- 23:45so long, I'll tell you so pe, because he didn't want to expose
- 23:48his own racket unless he had to. He didn't want to let Junior and
- 23:51Marge see how they'd been losing their money. Or you know all the answers,
- 23:52don't you. When I lost the fifteen hundred, we rolled the dice
- 23:56on a rug just like this one, smooth and so yeah, he had
- 24:00just a good chance to roll him right as I did. The dice aren't
- 24:03crooked. You got no beef? Should I pick up the dough bus?
- 24:06Why no, Sophie, I'm really shocked at you. We aren't gonna have
- 24:11any strong armstaff. Mister Terrence won the money he wanted the same way I
- 24:15want it from these suckers who We're just gonna roll a few more hands and
- 24:21well, this time I'm gonna handle the dice. Mike. That, Sophie,
- 24:26he has a gun. Didn't you expect he would have? You won't
- 24:27get hurt, mister if you play along with Gunner like he wants. Yes
- 24:30see, I wouldn't dream of hijack and you. All I want is the
- 24:33same chance you had. You have twenty four thousand dollars on the table,
- 24:37and I cover it. But this time I roll a dice. It's all
- 24:41fan square. That's certainly making armed robbery refine. I give me the dice,
- 24:45mister Bley, sure, and you'll have no beef when I take it.
- 24:51Six and and and ace facing each other the same way you held him.
- 24:55Any complaints, Oh no, no, no, got a complaint in
- 24:57the world. Twenty four thousand dollars. I could roll naturals all day.
- 25:03Well, aren't you even gonna shake? Why bother? You and I both
- 25:06know how it works. I'll just give him a Nyes gentle roll. He
- 25:11rode box cars? Twelve? Hey, Hey, what's going on? Well,
- 25:15I don't know, Gorman. There your dice? Want to shoot again?
- 25:18Yours in your grip? Keeps? Tell, just take care of the
- 25:22gun. Would you like to shoot again? In a minute. I'm gonna
- 25:26give these dice a few rolls. Yeah, well, well, well another
- 25:30twelve and another one. I ain't seen so many box cars since I was
- 25:34riding the rods. What are you done to these dice? Well, your
- 25:38dice, Gorman, you want to know how to handle him better than that.
- 25:41Maybe you're nervous. Oh Betty isn't hot. It's just not his nice
- 25:45Grab up the money, Soapy, I thought you were keeping this technically on
- 25:48the up and up. Gorman. Oh you're lucky. I'm not having Soapy
- 25:49put a slug through. You're keeping comet soaping. When I even get my
- 25:52fifteen, You're not gonna get out of here alive. I don't believe i'd
- 25:55take that money, Soapy, because the minute your fingers touch it. I
- 25:57shoot, Gorman, I've got I'm covering you. Yes, yes, So
- 26:03you want to risk a lot of trouble, Sophie, go right ahead and
- 26:04pick up the money. You see, Junior wouldn't have to worry. He
- 26:07has plenty of witnesses. But you'd be in a slight jam. I imagine
- 26:11if there were any fireworks. Give it to the kids, Sophie. It's
- 26:15a pretty funny bluff. Gorman. I've never seen a crooked gambler yet who'd
- 26:18risk gunplay? You heard me? So do you think Sophie is going to
- 26:21risk go onto the chair to save your money? You heard me, Soapie.
- 26:23I'm sorry, Buss. The guy's right, what boss, I've just
- 26:27resigned. Yeah, mister, you take the gun. I don't want to
- 26:30thank you. Sophie. You're showing excellent judgment. Your little You are to
- 26:34stay in your own backyard. That's what you ought to do. That's so
- 26:38long, folks see it. The Junior leave you, tump back, take
- 26:44your Gorman ladies present, no rough talk. I'll rough talk you when I
- 26:48get out of here. And that's for you. When you're dirty, double
- 26:51us talking, Marge, chriskom for weapons while I'm falling and stacking this money,
- 26:56would you? Oh wonderful, mister Trent. You're a character, honestly,
- 27:03Junia, how much money do you suppose you've lost to Gorman? Roughly
- 27:06about twenty thousand dollars altogether. But it was on a regular dice table,
- 27:10sure, with six as flats. Huh a dice Slough did, So you're
- 27:14bound to end up loser even if you win a little once in a while
- 27:15percentage dice. You know all the answers that, yes, I think so.
- 27:18He isn't carrying any guns, Mike, Mike, you called him that
- 27:22once before, Sure, Mike Tread maybe you've heard of him. Oh yeah,
- 27:33I'll get you for this. Hell, and if you're not going to
- 27:34get anybody, Gorman, you can't make a beef without exposing your own crookedness.
- 27:38And a fire with you, I'd see that nothing happens to Junior.
- 27:41What do you mean? I mean? I'm making a full report of this
- 27:42game to the police. From now, I'm they'll be watching you all the
- 27:47time. You're shoving me right out of top, that's right, any complaints?
- 27:52Look all those box cars I rolled? I don't this all that well?
- 27:56You see I had some adher fluid in a sponge pinned inside my coat,
- 28:00you see, and hero fluid. What are you talking about? Oh,
- 28:04you should keep up our new developments, Gooreman. It's a fluid to
- 28:07load dice while the game's in progress. Yes, it's a clear plastic fluid
- 28:11that hardens when it comes in contact with celluloid. I gave the aces on
- 28:15those dice a good heavy coat of it while you were telling me you were
- 28:18going to take over it. I didn't see you. All I had to
- 28:21do was get the fluid on my fingers much and rubbed my fingers over the
- 28:22aces. The dice was so loaded that when Gorman took them up, they'd
- 28:27turn even on a soft padded surface. You're the dirtiest crook I ever roun.
- 28:33No, no, no, not a dirty crook, Gorman, an
- 28:34honest crook. Here's your twenty thousand, junior, and you're fifteen hundred march.
- 28:41Oh, and here's another thirty five hundred to cover with your other friends
- 28:44lost junior. Geez, thanks, But what do I owe you for your
- 28:48your work? Mister Trent? Not a cent junior? Somehow or other,
- 28:52I seem to have done all right and now here's a last word from the
- 29:07man who knows the rackets inside out, Mike Trent. Thank you well.
- 29:11I hope you like tonight's show. It should help convince you that anybody can
- 29:15be easy money for crooked dice game operators. And remember, not even the
- 29:18water test is infallible for crooked dice. Any game can be rigged in fifty
- 29:23different ways, so the one way to be safe is to keep out of
- 29:26the game. This is Mike Trent signing off of the thought that you can
- 29:30never stay even with the game when the odds are always against you. Remember,
- 29:36there's no such thing as easy money. You have just heard another in
- 29:52NBC's news series Easy Money, exposing the inside tricks of the gambler's trade.
- 29:57Be sure to listen again next week when Mike Trent shows how it's possible for
- 30:02you to be jypped on what may look like a perfectly respectable raffle. It's
- 30:06called the lottery Racket. Featured in tonight's cast where Larry Haynes as Mike Trent,
- 30:11with Wendy Drew, Peter Fernandez, Ralph Bell, and Maurice Tarplin.
- 30:15Script by George B. Anderson, Easy Money is produced and directed for air
- 30:19shows incorporated by Blair Wallacer. This is Bill McCord join your favorite couple film
- 30:30McGee and Molly tonight on the NBC Radio Network. Welcome back. Oh wow.
- 30:42This really I think could have been a hit series if it had aired
- 30:48a few years earlier. I love this the way that they worked this educational
- 30:52element in to a story in a way that's interesting, that really gets you
- 30:57interested in the game and curious about what's going on. And doubtless, while
- 31:03there have been some enhancements or improvements, there are probably some gamblers out there
- 31:10using the same tricks shown in today's program, so this was definitely enjoyable.
- 31:17I will not have the titles of missing episodes. This is not a well
- 31:22documented series, so there's no full episode log available. So we have what
- 31:27we have, and we have the dates for when they aired, but as
- 31:32for the titles of the shows in between, wouldn't be able to tell you.
- 31:36That will actually do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with the
- 31:40Adventures of Philip Marlow, and then join us back here on Tuesday for another
- 31:45episode of Easy Money. In the meanwhile, sender comments to Box thirteen at
