- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh, this is me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless,
- 0:14Speaker 1: severely bug bitten in my case, underwear listening. Don't meet
- 0:18Speaker 1: e podcast. You can't predict anything, all right. We're recording
- 0:26Speaker 1: from the I seventy corridor in central Colorado? Is that cool? Yan?
- 0:29Speaker 1: That's cool? Yeah, we're in a place that that that.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Yanni is extremely nervous that someone will suss out where
- 0:41Speaker 1: we are. I feel like they could look up jannat
- 0:43Speaker 1: Pitels and just figure it out. Yeah, but don't tell him. Actually,
- 0:47Speaker 1: he'll getting nervous, sort of very secret location on the
- 0:51Speaker 1: I seventy corridor and um, you call through. You're still comfortable? Yeah?
- 1:00Speaker 1: Do you really feel like it counts his I s
- 1:02Speaker 1: any corridor too? Because I feel like we're a little
- 1:04Speaker 1: far away from all Right, here's here's a hunt story
- 1:13Speaker 1: for you. Now. The hunt story starts out with me.
- 1:16Speaker 1: The prelude is me getting the big old buck. How'd
- 1:20Speaker 1: you like that, Brody? When I got that buck, that
- 1:24Speaker 1: was well, Brody liked it. I liked it a whole lot.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Then a couple of days later, Uh, we go out
- 1:33Speaker 1: too to uh try to find a buck for Yanni.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And I can't tell you that where we were and
- 1:42Speaker 1: go out and what happened. First we glassed up some
- 1:45Speaker 1: doughs mm hmm. Then we're also looking for an elk
- 1:51Speaker 1: for you looking for an elk. And then Yanni glasses
- 1:55Speaker 1: up a buck coming kind of down a cross below us.
- 2:00Speaker 1: We're up on a perch looking down into some aspen
- 2:02Speaker 1: groves and big meadows. And you said you first know
- 2:09Speaker 1: something's wrong with it. Yeah, Like his face just looks gnarly.
- 2:13Speaker 1: His face in the eights, he couldn't really tell. Turns
- 2:18Speaker 1: out as the buckets closer. He's got one regular antler,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and he's got one antler that is laid down. If
- 2:26Speaker 1: I remembering this correctly, if I saw what I think
- 2:28Speaker 1: I saw, his auntler was sort of laying down across
- 2:31Speaker 1: the bridge of his nose and in the hook of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the main beam was wrapping down around under his chin.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Now I have seen in the past, I've
- 2:44Speaker 1: seen bucks that had that would mess up their pedicles.
- 2:46Speaker 1: So the part of a deer, like the skull of
- 2:50Speaker 1: the deer, the thing that the that the antler protrudes
- 2:52Speaker 1: from when it grows every year, is called the pedicle.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And I seem to hear that have damaged their pedicles
- 2:58Speaker 1: or just have a squirrely ant And I saw I
- 3:00Speaker 1: remember seeing one where the antler grew down and then
- 3:03Speaker 1: punched out the deer's eye. You haven't seen that, Yeah, well,
- 3:08Speaker 1: my old man used to when I was a little kid.
- 3:10Speaker 1: My old man was the was the local dude who
- 3:13Speaker 1: scored for Pope and Young and boot and Crockett whatnot.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So we got all a man or a deer over
- 3:18Speaker 1: at our house to look at. And so I saw
- 3:21Speaker 1: this buck. I thought it was a crazy, squirty looking
- 3:23Speaker 1: buck rack and I gold, yeah, I said, shoot, it's
- 3:26Speaker 1: a buck of a lifetime. Then we noticed that he
- 3:29Speaker 1: was gimpy and had a very bad limp. And I
- 3:33Speaker 1: think what happened to that poor buck was? I think
- 3:35Speaker 1: that uhbody got hit by a car. Yeah, the I
- 3:42Speaker 1: seventy seventy corridor, which we weren't terribly far from that,
- 3:47Speaker 1: were the uh he got really beat up in a fight,
- 3:50Speaker 1: or he got in a fight and then got locked
- 3:53Speaker 1: horns in the buck the buck broke his skull plate,
- 3:56Speaker 1: punched him in the back leg real hard, and he
- 4:00Speaker 1: so so he crawls up into this little aspen grove,
- 4:04Speaker 1: and I was thinking he'll pop out the other side
- 4:07Speaker 1: and then Yanni's gonna take a crack at him. But
- 4:09Speaker 1: he never emerged from the aspen grove. We made a
- 4:15Speaker 1: plan that we would later in the day go over
- 4:18Speaker 1: and jump him out of there and assess just how
- 4:22Speaker 1: bad a shape he was in. If you I've done
- 4:27Speaker 1: this in the past, I shouldn't admit this because because
- 4:29Speaker 1: you could, it's against the law. I have in the
- 4:31Speaker 1: past been out hunting and euthanized deer that uh that
- 4:39Speaker 1: I encountered, but he didn't him, but didn't tag him.
- 4:45Speaker 1: One time I was on a little t island and
- 4:48Speaker 1: we uh found a deer that had been hamstrung by
- 4:52Speaker 1: coyotes or something, and it was, I mean, it was
- 4:55Speaker 1: mostly dead, but not all the way dead, way beyond salvage, oh,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I mean was Yeah, it was a mess. It was
- 5:01Speaker 1: a pathetic mass um and we we helped it along
- 5:05Speaker 1: to where I was headed. And the two times I
- 5:08Speaker 1: found deer that had been had poor shot placement on
- 5:11Speaker 1: the part of some other hunter and they were in
- 5:13Speaker 1: in in in bad, bad shape now. But yeah, if
- 5:17Speaker 1: you if you youthanize deer, you gotta put a tag on.
- 5:19Speaker 1: When I was a little kid, I remember deer swam.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Two times deer swam our leg and got hung up
- 5:23Speaker 1: in fences, and one time deer broke. It's like, we
- 5:26Speaker 1: didn't go over there and and and we called a
- 5:28Speaker 1: game warden or a cop or something. The cop came
- 5:30Speaker 1: out and shot the deer and said that you cannot
- 5:33Speaker 1: shoot that deer. You had that happen, Brodie, Yeah, totally
- 5:37Speaker 1: did it in my backyard. Basically called the Division Wildlife.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Said there's a deer with a busted back leg. It's
- 5:44Speaker 1: in really rough shape. Game warden came over and wouldn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: shoot it because it was in a in a neighborhood.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Basically said I can't kill this deer safely. What's gonna happen.
- 5:57Speaker 1: It's gonna happen. And what happened is that year probably
- 6:00Speaker 1: got killed by a dog or you know something. When
- 6:04Speaker 1: I was a little kid, we were coming back from
- 6:07Speaker 1: tracking a deer and I remember it was one in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the morning and my day was driving the nineteen seventy
- 6:13Speaker 1: nine jeep Grand Cherokee and he hit a deer. So
- 6:19Speaker 1: we're coming back from track of deer and he didn't
- 6:21Speaker 1: we didn't find he hits the deer gets out and
- 6:25Speaker 1: throws the deer up into the back of the jeep
- 6:27Speaker 1: Grand Cherokee. I'm riding shotgun and my two brothers are
- 6:30Speaker 1: in the bench seat in the back. We started down
- 6:32Speaker 1: the road and also my brothers are screaming because the
- 6:35Speaker 1: deer is now standing up in the back of the
- 6:37Speaker 1: jeep Grand Cherokee. Remember, oh man pull over the side
- 6:41Speaker 1: of the road, dragged the deer out of the jeep
- 6:43Speaker 1: Grand Cherokee, fully alive, cut its throat, loaded the back
- 6:48Speaker 1: of the jeep Grand Cheroke, and we proceeded on our
- 6:50Speaker 1: way home. And I think the next day, if I
- 6:53Speaker 1: remember right, it's a long time ago, he notified the
- 6:55Speaker 1: police and they brought him over a permit for it. Well,
- 6:58Speaker 1: Montana recently the set up something where if you you
- 7:02Speaker 1: hit game, you can take it. And you know that's
- 7:08Speaker 1: another law I broke a whole bunch of times. Is
- 7:10Speaker 1: it in Montana you weren't allowed to have road kill. Yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 1: now though recently the last couple of years you can. Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 1: non trophy games, so you can't keep road kill sheet,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but that you keep deer and out. Maybe that if
- 7:23Speaker 1: it's got horns, you gotta report it. Yeah, I think
- 7:26Speaker 1: either way I actually should. I used to break that
- 7:29Speaker 1: law and kind of half hope that I would get
- 7:30Speaker 1: caught because I wanted to go to a judge. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: thought it'd be fun if the fine wasn't that bad.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I thought it'd be fun to go into court and
- 7:37Speaker 1: be like, yes, I am guilty of salvaging. Yeah, making dear,
- 7:42Speaker 1: that's some guy in front of me hit with a
- 7:43Speaker 1: car and it would otherwise wind up rotting on the
- 7:46Speaker 1: side of the road or wind up in a hand phil.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So here I am confessing my guilt. Yeah, Like, is
- 7:53Speaker 1: this really a big problem? I picked up a turkey
- 7:56Speaker 1: off the road this couple of winners ago. Is it legally?
- 7:59Speaker 1: I don't know. Colorado, I have no idea. I know
- 8:01Speaker 1: guys put big bumper guards on their trucks. So now
- 8:05Speaker 1: in Montana with the new rule, so now they go
- 8:09Speaker 1: out at night and they'll mom down pick up. You
- 8:11Speaker 1: know people who purposefully go out and mow down, Well,
- 8:16Speaker 1: they put a big bumper so they can mom down.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Maybe they don't go out and plan, they don't need
- 8:22Speaker 1: to just speed up and they won't swerve for do
- 8:24Speaker 1: they want it? For what reason? They'll eat it? Really,
- 8:27Speaker 1: But if you're hitting them that hard, Like I mean,
- 8:30Speaker 1: I was just saying that, you know, there's people out
- 8:32Speaker 1: there that, Yeah, the percentage of deer they get hit
- 8:36Speaker 1: by cars that are actually edible is you know whatever, Like, yeah, yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 1: I had a deer on a motorcycle once. Anything that
- 8:48Speaker 1: turned out for you, I mean I got beat up.
- 8:51Speaker 1: We couldn't find the deer. But yeah, it's not really relevant,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I guess. But so what happens with this book. Here's
- 8:58Speaker 1: why we didn't make it back to the UK. This
- 9:00Speaker 1: is something I've been really eager to talk about because
- 9:02Speaker 1: I want to hear Yanni's side of this, because all
- 9:05Speaker 1: stories have two sides. So we walk a few miles.
- 9:11Speaker 1: How many miles have we walked to where we took
- 9:16Speaker 1: a nap was probably close. So we walked about four
- 9:18Speaker 1: miles into the mountains. The day gets hot ish, you
- 9:23Speaker 1: kind of get the feeling like you're in that that
- 9:26Speaker 1: transitional zone whereas not the morning hunt, it's not the
- 9:30Speaker 1: evening hunt. It's kind of time to regroup, have a snack,
- 9:32Speaker 1: take a little nap. I lay down to take a
- 9:34Speaker 1: little nappy and it wasn't perfect because the ground I
- 9:37Speaker 1: was laying out was frozen into cold kept creeping up
- 9:39Speaker 1: into my body. But as I was doing this, Yanni's like,
- 9:42Speaker 1: wants to go over and glass into the next bowl. Yeah.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I had a hot ticket in my pocket, so I
- 9:49Speaker 1: couldn't take a nap. I was like, well, I counters
- 9:53Speaker 1: a horseman who is smoking a joint. The horseman not quiet.
- 10:00Speaker 1: He was about to stop correcting me. You're gonna get
- 10:04Speaker 1: to tell your version. Well, no, but you're telling my version.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You told him I told you as you approached him
- 10:11Speaker 1: he hid a quote spliff. Yeah he did, but he
- 10:16Speaker 1: wasn't smoking it. Okay, fixing the smoker joint encounters the
- 10:20Speaker 1: guy fixing the smoker joint. The guy uh starts out
- 10:25Speaker 1: by inviting Yanni to come over and look at a
- 10:27Speaker 1: pistol that he has hidden under a branch. Is that correct?
- 10:30Speaker 1: Let me just say, you can a story, but you
- 10:34Speaker 1: can't add things to my story. I haven't added anything
- 10:38Speaker 1: you told me. He invited you over a pistol that
- 10:42Speaker 1: he had hidden under a branch. I'm going back. I'm
- 10:46Speaker 1: the saying, just remember which is legal in Colorado. It's legal.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And Yanni really admires this guy because because of everything
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell about the fella is has a we
- 11:03Speaker 1: explained a spliff a joint old marijuana. Say so so now,
- 11:10Speaker 1: Johnny Cochrane here is saying he wasn't actually smoking. He
- 11:15Speaker 1: was just handling a joint, handling a joint. Yeah, he
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm guessing it was. It was nappy time all across
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Elk Mountains of Colorado. You had just fallen asleep.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And at the same time I walked in the cabin's door,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and he was a little little cabin up here, like
- 11:35Speaker 1: a little shelter. He was literally about to fired up,
- 11:40Speaker 1: probably have a little lunch and taken out. Tells Uh,
- 11:44Speaker 1: invites Yoanny to coming examine a pistol. He's got hitten
- 11:47Speaker 1: under a branch. Tells Yanni he's recently been robbed up
- 11:52Speaker 1: there on the mountain. Tells Yannie that he had recently
- 11:56Speaker 1: encountered some hippies who were thrown in rocks at a
- 12:01Speaker 1: deer to scare it away. He couple days later killed
- 12:05Speaker 1: the deer, the deer having to be a tame deer
- 12:08Speaker 1: named Fred. Uh tells Yanni he has he's been hunting
- 12:12Speaker 1: up here on a rented horse for some number of days,
- 12:17Speaker 1: has not seen a single elk in those days. He
- 12:21Speaker 1: has a homemade coat on. Yanni explained that he had
- 12:24Speaker 1: a shirt that he's sow the bottom half of a
- 12:27Speaker 1: parka onto which you ain't like that shirt a lot,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and uh, says the young Listen, You're welcome to hunt
- 12:39Speaker 1: up on this mountain all you want, but let me
- 12:42Speaker 1: tell you about a magical He didn't use the word magical.
- 12:48Speaker 1: A timber buck so big that you could use its
- 12:54Speaker 1: antlers as a swing set, and a person with a
- 12:58Speaker 1: large posterior or could still sit inside of it, tells
- 13:05Speaker 1: Yannie that it's even though Yann's walcome to stay on
- 13:08Speaker 1: the mountain, he just needs to follow the trail down
- 13:12Speaker 1: towards the trailhead. Along the way, he will encounter twenty
- 13:17Speaker 1: does in a land feature that he refers to as
- 13:20Speaker 1: the doe condo and a completely different drainage different he
- 13:25Speaker 1: will there wait here, not the dreams we came up.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It was a different. We had to go down so
- 13:32Speaker 1: so go down there. You'll find a doe condo. You'll
- 13:36Speaker 1: know you're there. And the buck, he explains, the eye.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Don't think it looks like a normal buck, because it's
- 13:45Speaker 1: it's And he found a bush to show Yannie what
- 13:48Speaker 1: the color of the buck was to demonstrate, so Yanni
- 13:50Speaker 1: even know Aust told him. Another identifying feature of this
- 13:53Speaker 1: book is that it will not stop walking a so
- 14:01Speaker 1: then up to that point no one had seen the buck,
- 14:04Speaker 1: had seen it standing, never stopped, and has peculiar corded antlers.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So Yanna reports this to me and I have a
- 14:13Speaker 1: little chuckle about it, like it's funny. But then Yanna
- 14:19Speaker 1: then spends the rest of his day walking up and
- 14:25Speaker 1: down the trail. And we spoke to first a couple
- 14:29Speaker 1: of fellows who come through our mountain bikes. Then we
- 14:32Speaker 1: spoke to a couple of ladies who come through our
- 14:34Speaker 1: mountain bikes. Then we spoke to a fella come walking
- 14:39Speaker 1: up the trail on a on a pleasure hike. And
- 14:42Speaker 1: we spoke to uh Gale with a nose Arry Income
- 14:45Speaker 1: walking up the trail on a pleasure hike. Re spoke
- 14:49Speaker 1: to the fellow who was on the pleasure hike. A
- 14:53Speaker 1: while later, the horseman who clued us in on the
- 14:56Speaker 1: mystery buck, somehow is coming back up the trail yelling
- 14:59Speaker 1: at with his vest half on. He had a vessel
- 15:03Speaker 1: with one arm on, and I heard and we heard
- 15:05Speaker 1: him yell at the at the horse that he rented. Um,
- 15:09Speaker 1: he yelled, get up there, you're starting to piss me off,
- 15:13Speaker 1: and he wrote by on. Three more mountain bikers rode on.
- 15:17Speaker 1: He's wear headphones, headphones, got headphones on the ear protection headphones. Um.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Three more mountain bikers come zooming through, and Yanni still
- 15:33Speaker 1: stays still is hunting that trail, walking up and down
- 15:37Speaker 1: that trail, waiting for the mystery timber buck, black horn,
- 15:42Speaker 1: black horn. Okay, that was my impression. Now you give
- 15:48Speaker 1: your version of how we spent our day yesterday. Although
- 15:51Speaker 1: I get we forgot about the he killed six elk,
- 15:56Speaker 1: that's why he has that. Yanni was trying to figure
- 15:58Speaker 1: out he carrying the pistol because he's been opped or what,
- 16:01Speaker 1: and he goes, oh no, when I'm riding my horse,
- 16:04Speaker 1: oftentimes I'll get into a situation where a bull will
- 16:07Speaker 1: come streaking across the trail and I pulled out, and
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'm like, bay, I'm blame, I'm blame, and I've killed
- 16:12Speaker 1: six like that. Now. We later learned that this fella
- 16:17Speaker 1: had reported to someone else that he had seen seventeen
- 16:19Speaker 1: olk that day. When you go ahead and hunt here,
- 16:23Speaker 1: all you want, but you might be interested to know
- 16:28Speaker 1: about a mysterious timber buck that has to be lurking
- 16:31Speaker 1: down on Yonder Mountain bike trail a ways away from
- 16:37Speaker 1: where he was. And I the moral of this story,
- 16:43Speaker 1: it's a story of love. There's no other explanation of
- 16:47Speaker 1: why I would have spent the day with Yannie if
- 16:49Speaker 1: I didn't love him. Love conquers. Oh, there's logic and
- 16:56Speaker 1: there's love, and that was love. I appreciate that that
- 17:01Speaker 1: I stat on that trail. I mean, it's fun when
- 17:03Speaker 1: we socialized with all manner of people coming and going,
- 17:07Speaker 1: but it was a frustrating day of hunting. Mm hmmm,
- 17:11Speaker 1: now what what what? How how do you? How do
- 17:15Speaker 1: you what? What? What do you? How would you describe
- 17:18Speaker 1: our day? This is what i'n't anxiously awaiting to hear. Well,
- 17:22Speaker 1: I think that up until the point of you know,
- 17:25Speaker 1: after the basis, after the morning hunt and the nap,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's all the same. And then when I leave you,
- 17:33Speaker 1: so so my story was correct up till I fell asleep. Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 1: I just feel like you just left thousand parts. Um.
- 17:42Speaker 1: So when I walk up to the cabin, the guy
- 17:45Speaker 1: has been successful. I see, I see, I see me hanging.
- 17:50Speaker 1: He killed a deer. Yeah, they killed a couple of deer.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Frank I told that he killed Fred, the deer that
- 17:56Speaker 1: the hippies tried to scare away. Yeah, so he's got me.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I didn't leave that out. He's got He went out
- 18:02Speaker 1: there with the giant crew of other hunters and they
- 18:04Speaker 1: had like six or seven people out there to start
- 18:06Speaker 1: the season off with. He's the last guy remained because
- 18:10Speaker 1: it was hot and we were like, we're like on
- 18:13Speaker 1: day probably seven of a nine day season, so pretty
- 18:18Speaker 1: shitty season really for most hunting conditions, you know, I
- 18:21Speaker 1: mean we we battled through it. It's for someone to
- 18:24Speaker 1: basically camp out for seven days. I'm like, yeah, this
- 18:27Speaker 1: guy's getting after it. Yeah, so um as, I'm like
- 18:33Speaker 1: seeing him tuck away is a little split off, the
- 18:35Speaker 1: kind of you know, it doesn't want to show me up.
- 18:38Speaker 1: On the above the door, there's a note. I don't
- 18:41Speaker 1: remember the note. Yeah, but this the But the note
- 18:44Speaker 1: doesn't have any effect on on how silly that day,
- 18:48Speaker 1: how silly our hunt plan was. The note doesn't Is
- 18:51Speaker 1: it gonna make the listener be like, oh yeah that
- 18:54Speaker 1: was a hot tip. No, I just feel like it
- 18:57Speaker 1: gives a little character background on on who this guy
- 19:00Speaker 1: is and why he's up there and why he's like
- 19:03Speaker 1: he's just had a bad week. You imagine, what do
- 19:10Speaker 1: you imagine I'm trying to say with the story that
- 19:13Speaker 1: I'm telling, we were imagining what you were trying to
- 19:16Speaker 1: say all day long. Well, I'm trying to. I mean,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I glass the hillside. You guys are on, so I'm thinking,
- 19:24Speaker 1: all right, they're one around. It's big. Potentially there's animals there,
- 19:29Speaker 1: but it's multi multi user experience over there. I mean,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm glass, But what are you you're saying basically the story?
- 19:37Speaker 1: What's the funny part of the story that basically you
- 19:40Speaker 1: went on like an uh nostalgic hike with the honest
- 19:45Speaker 1: I forgot. I forgot to even get into that part.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Turns out, the first time he ever went out cunning
- 19:52Speaker 1: by himself, some guy wasn't even I wasn't. Some guy
- 19:56Speaker 1: had sent him up that creek, so and the whole thing,
- 20:01Speaker 1: And I'm like, why in the world are you walking
- 20:04Speaker 1: up and down this trail waiting for this mythic timber
- 20:09Speaker 1: buck to come out. It's so big that a large
- 20:12Speaker 1: bottomed person could use it as a swing set, and
- 20:15Speaker 1: it turns out that he was on some weird, strange
- 20:20Speaker 1: memory lane. I don't think that's strange, that's natural, that's normal.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Did you You also forgot about right before we actually
- 20:26Speaker 1: put our packs on started hiking down the mountain. I
- 20:29Speaker 1: looked at you, said, you know what, I don't care
- 20:31Speaker 1: if it's timber box or one sixty bucks. I said,
- 20:35Speaker 1: I feel like there's some doughs around here. He killed
- 20:37Speaker 1: a dough or he killed the buck. His buddy killed
- 20:40Speaker 1: a dough There's some doughs around here. It's November twelve.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Ort like, we need to find some doughs. I'm kind
- 20:48Speaker 1: of excited. You know, now, this area it's it's like
- 20:53Speaker 1: a it's it's a small, very very small drainage. It
- 20:59Speaker 1: it doesn't I mean, the old drainage might only go
- 21:02Speaker 1: how long, a couple of miles, how many animals. Let's
- 21:06Speaker 1: talk about that before you get too fired up about
- 21:09Speaker 1: this spot. I what are you doing? Carrots out of here.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I know that he's done, like I know it seems odd,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but I also know that Janice has and his buddies
- 21:29Speaker 1: and his brother and the whole crew people have killed
- 21:32Speaker 1: a pile of elk on that mountain and the drainage
- 21:36Speaker 1: you walked down in the afternoon. I've killed a bunch
- 21:39Speaker 1: of elk up there too. Yes, one time Joanna said,
- 21:46Speaker 1: if Brody had to kill an elk and he only
- 21:49Speaker 1: had one spot to go to, that's where that. I
- 21:53Speaker 1: can't say the name of the drainage, but just the
- 21:56Speaker 1: drainage you came out in the evening, random creek. Yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 1: and be honest, was probably right. Like if I if
- 22:05Speaker 1: you were like, dude, you've got a day to killing out,
- 22:09Speaker 1: where are you gonna go? You would go up there
- 22:11Speaker 1: and I would not go in where you went, like
- 22:14Speaker 1: the mountain bike. No no, no, no no, no no no.
- 22:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't go in where you went. I would go
- 22:19Speaker 1: in where you came out. And listen again, we're the
- 22:23Speaker 1: whole multi recreational thing is happening because we're dealing with
- 22:26Speaker 1: like this weird like you know late you know, middle
- 22:30Speaker 1: of November, where the highs are, you know, sixty seventy degrees. Yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 1: normally it's two ft of snow in there. There's a
- 22:39Speaker 1: lot of people else besides hunters. There's a lot of
- 22:42Speaker 1: people up there that are waiting around to go skiing.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That would normally never be there this time of year. Yeah,
- 22:51Speaker 1: let's talk about me like you're trying to you got you, guys,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I just I'm not trying to prove, just to try
- 22:57Speaker 1: to get a better understanding of what in the world
- 23:01Speaker 1: we were doing. You were going on one of your
- 23:04Speaker 1: honest is multi drainage tours, which is he's famous for
- 23:09Speaker 1: walk about a little like a little memory, little no
- 23:13Speaker 1: high likelihood for some animal. Here's the Here's the point
- 23:16Speaker 1: I was trying to make when I was when I
- 23:17Speaker 1: was asked, when I was asking what the point I
- 23:20Speaker 1: was trying to make was trying you were supposed to
- 23:24Speaker 1: give was man, you wouldn't guess the NICT was so
- 23:31Speaker 1: gullible for hunting intel. Yeah, he was so gullible as
- 23:39Speaker 1: to think that he was getting a hot tip and
- 23:42Speaker 1: not that he was getting sent packing out of an
- 23:46Speaker 1: area the develop was trying to hunt by scent packing
- 23:51Speaker 1: by means of an outlandish story. It's the only thing
- 23:56Speaker 1: I didn't understand is you guys went way past where is.
- 24:00Speaker 1: He told us a land feature that didn't exist, but
- 24:02Speaker 1: he did find those at the Dope condo. No, we
- 24:05Speaker 1: never identified the Dope condo and Yeah, we saw a
- 24:07Speaker 1: dough on twin bonds. You met some nice people. Story,
- 24:16Speaker 1: my story failed story. You think you know a guy
- 24:21Speaker 1: and then you learned that he's completely gullible and doesn't
- 24:24Speaker 1: know when he's having his chain? Here, can I have
- 24:29Speaker 1: a closing thought on the whole thing? Um, if nothing
- 24:36Speaker 1: else came from my interaction with him other than we
- 24:41Speaker 1: packed up and hunted, I at least hunted my way
- 24:46Speaker 1: down that hill in a very keen like elevated hunting sense.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Whether it was because the timber box or seeing dose
- 24:56Speaker 1: or whatever, but I took a very serious approach to
- 24:58Speaker 1: the whole rest of the day. That is what gets
- 25:02Speaker 1: animals killed and gets animals and freezes when you hunt
- 25:04Speaker 1: like that, when you're like the day is over, it's hot.
- 25:08Speaker 1: We got hikers and bikers and let's get to and
- 25:14Speaker 1: you're like, oh my god, look at that thing. No,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you can't see fifty We were in thick aspens. You
- 25:21Speaker 1: can't see fifty yards in any direction. You hate aspens, now,
- 25:25Speaker 1: I kind of do. I can't see fifty yards in
- 25:28Speaker 1: a direction NonStop pedestrian traffic, and we're like waiting for uh,
- 25:35Speaker 1: a giant or timber buck, black corn. I told you
- 25:40Speaker 1: I'd be happy with any buck coming around. I was like,
- 25:43Speaker 1: I feel like there's some deer around. But it was
- 25:45Speaker 1: cool ship you came down through gorgeous forgot how beautiful
- 25:49Speaker 1: that place? This thing I want to talk about that's
- 25:52Speaker 1: been asked your clothing thoughts. Sorry, that's how you get Meanwhile,
- 25:57Speaker 1: I'm over there trying to kill a buck while you
- 25:59Speaker 1: guys are taking a tour of the country. And you
- 26:01Speaker 1: guys were in and what I would consider to be
- 26:03Speaker 1: an actual hunt spot with with the occasional it's what
- 26:09Speaker 1: makes our hunt spots the Brody and I share here good.
- 26:14Speaker 1: It really does. They're hard hunting spots and I'm glad
- 26:18Speaker 1: that people are frustrated by them and can't always understand them.
- 26:21Speaker 1: And you know, or never maybe never come back and
- 26:24Speaker 1: hunt him again. I'll be hunting him again. You know. Hey,
- 26:30Speaker 1: there's some of your spots I'll hunt for the rest
- 26:32Speaker 1: of my life. You won't. And I had a lot
- 26:35Speaker 1: of friends are gonna like hunt and then when I'm
- 26:38Speaker 1: laying off the map my bodies, I'm gonna be like,
- 26:40Speaker 1: this is where this is. Probably there's a timber bucking air.
- 26:46Speaker 1: If you're feeling social go to this place. You want
- 26:49Speaker 1: to meet some lades. No, okay, So I want to
- 26:52Speaker 1: change the subject um. The thing we get asked about,
- 26:55Speaker 1: like emails come in and people ask questions. And one
- 26:59Speaker 1: thing I think that comes up parnially, it comes up
- 27:02Speaker 1: often is the issue of physical fitness, hunting based physical fitness.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about? Yes, sir? Now has
- 27:14Speaker 1: everyone in here? Has everyone? You're done yoga a couple
- 27:19Speaker 1: of times? How many? Like paid for it twice? But
- 27:24Speaker 1: I stretched a lot, which I feel like yoga stretch.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But you've paid, You've paid the stretch. No, I respect yoga. Good,
- 27:35Speaker 1: good answer. And there are thousand times been doing it
- 27:39Speaker 1: since I was eighteen, which back that not a lot
- 27:44Speaker 1: of dudes doing the yoga. So you're establishing that you
- 27:46Speaker 1: were doing yoga before yoga was cool, but you were
- 27:49Speaker 1: doing it to meet chicks, and you admitted that you
- 27:52Speaker 1: took that's you said you did it to me back battle.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I mean, there were some nice looking ladies doing the
- 28:00Speaker 1: yoga back then, but now that's not the place. A
- 28:03Speaker 1: lot of guys doing yoga. I mean generally half the
- 28:08Speaker 1: classes that I'm in, I mean half the class as men. Yeah,
- 28:12Speaker 1: nearly half. I've been to yoga four times, so I
- 28:14Speaker 1: have like a level of expertise about on the subject.
- 28:18Speaker 1: You're speaking like, you're no my wife either. My wife
- 28:22Speaker 1: likes to go. We have date nights and my wife
- 28:25Speaker 1: likes to go that she she wants me to go
- 28:27Speaker 1: with her to yoga and she wants me then we
- 28:30Speaker 1: go to dinner. So four times. We do other things too,
- 28:33Speaker 1: But this is one of the things in our repertoire.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Four times we've gone. Now where she goes, it's one
- 28:40Speaker 1: four degrees in the room, so it's how does ship? Yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 1: like tropical, tropical dark, mostly dark. Yeah, you go in there,
- 28:50Speaker 1: it's harming four degrees everybody, you lay down, you're already.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You don't have anything, euts for my swim trunks. You
- 28:56Speaker 1: don't have any shoes, pants, nothing, just I I going
- 29:00Speaker 1: west slim trunks and you lay down on a mat
- 29:02Speaker 1: and they kind of build you up, they invite you to,
- 29:07Speaker 1: They build you in a way. That doesn't work for me,
- 29:09Speaker 1: but I think it works for some people where they
- 29:12Speaker 1: they invite you to, they want you to. They like
- 29:14Speaker 1: want you to thank yourself for going to yoga. That's
- 29:20Speaker 1: not true. Well, I'm not into that part of it,
- 29:23Speaker 1: but they do. But out the one man, there's like
- 29:25Speaker 1: it's like flavors, ice cream, yoga like that, you know,
- 29:29Speaker 1: but I'm talking about the place everybody. My wife does
- 29:35Speaker 1: a lot of different flavors and some are more spiritual based,
- 29:40Speaker 1: some are pretty just physical. Yeah. So they tell you
- 29:43Speaker 1: to build you up. They tell you they're like, they're like, uh,
- 29:48Speaker 1: trying to think of an example. No, no, this is
- 29:50Speaker 1: be honest, this is like something they would actually say.
- 29:52Speaker 1: They say, you know, leave the world, be be the
- 29:55Speaker 1: change the world will be waiting for you. Yeah, you
- 30:00Speaker 1: owe it to the people in your life who rely
- 30:03Speaker 1: on you to take a moment for yourself and thank
- 30:07Speaker 1: yourself and dedicate this session to yourself. Right, Yeah, and
- 30:14Speaker 1: then they'll be like, now, take your heel and bring
- 30:18Speaker 1: it up so it touches your nose, I mean, and
- 30:22Speaker 1: hold it there for an hour, right, And if you can't,
- 30:26Speaker 1: don't worry, just do what feels you. Know that you
- 30:30Speaker 1: can always come back to a comfortable position, not put
- 30:33Speaker 1: your pinky toe around to the back of your skull
- 30:39Speaker 1: while standing on one ft, Right, can you proceed to
- 30:44Speaker 1: stretch your ass off for ninety minutes? They play really
- 30:48Speaker 1: bad music. They wouldn't need to like there's good Like
- 30:52Speaker 1: you can play the national or in some rate and
- 30:54Speaker 1: select radio headcuts and have the same effect. But they'll
- 30:57Speaker 1: go with like a you Yeah, they need to they
- 30:59Speaker 1: need to move towards the indie radio heads. And you
- 31:01Speaker 1: know how like they have in square dances, like a
- 31:04Speaker 1: person that calls square dance like grab your partner dosi.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Though there's like the lady like that wanders around sort
- 31:11Speaker 1: of in this loud whisper calling the session trying to
- 31:16Speaker 1: inspire people. No, she's like calling square dance, but calling
- 31:20Speaker 1: like the next stretches you're gonna do encouraging or calls
- 31:26Speaker 1: like okay, we're gonna do with this that we're gonna
- 31:28Speaker 1: do that. Take a take a step step back. The
- 31:30Speaker 1: fact that there's talking about the benefits and there's a
- 31:33Speaker 1: group of of of hunting guys talking about their yoga
- 31:37Speaker 1: experiences right now. Yeah, how are we circling to hunting fitness?
- 31:41Speaker 1: I think that because I think that after my four
- 31:44Speaker 1: times and after Yanni's experience, but she's gonna touch on
- 31:46Speaker 1: I think that it is one of the I think
- 31:49Speaker 1: it's a great thing to do for hunting fitness. But
- 31:52Speaker 1: you've only done it four times? Are you going to
- 31:53Speaker 1: continue to do it? I have enough experience with physical
- 31:56Speaker 1: activity and stuff that I think, Yeah, I'm starting to
- 31:59Speaker 1: really think so. I think as far as injury prevention,
- 32:03Speaker 1: as far as slinking through the woods and crawling under
- 32:07Speaker 1: and over all kinds of garbage like hole known comfortable
- 32:10Speaker 1: positions and just being like comfortable. But are you gonna
- 32:15Speaker 1: go pay to do it? Are you just gonna do
- 32:17Speaker 1: it at home? I think we pay to do it.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I wouldn't know how to do it at home because
- 32:21Speaker 1: you need the lady to call it. Yeah, you need
- 32:24Speaker 1: you need a little guy like you can I mean,
- 32:26Speaker 1: obviously you can go to YouTube and do yeah. I
- 32:28Speaker 1: mean that's how saying because you're in a hot room
- 32:30Speaker 1: full of people. My wife, My wife does it all
- 32:34Speaker 1: the time with apps and ship like that. Four degrees. No,
- 32:39Speaker 1: it's it's helpful having somebody to tell you to do
- 32:42Speaker 1: something you don't want to do. And then and then
- 32:44Speaker 1: when you really don't want to do it anymore, they're
- 32:47Speaker 1: still telling you keep doing it. It's no, they're telling you, hey,
- 32:51Speaker 1: if you can't do it, it's cool, go back to it.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Happen but then there's some person to the right of
- 32:56Speaker 1: you that is just killing and so you're like, I
- 32:58Speaker 1: got to prove to them that I it's also helpful
- 33:01Speaker 1: when you've paid to do it, because when you're invested in, yeah,
- 33:04Speaker 1: the kind of guy, Like if I paid to get
- 33:07Speaker 1: in there and it turned out they were just gonna
- 33:08Speaker 1: beat my fingers with a hammer, I will still stay right.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Like you commit. It's like going to see a shitty movie, right,
- 33:15Speaker 1: You're gonna watch till the end. That bring this up.
- 33:17Speaker 1: It's like in hunting, if you pay attention to hunt me,
- 33:19Speaker 1: there's a big thing of like, uh, we're dudes are
- 33:22Speaker 1: trying to get their neck out past their ears. Big yeah.
- 33:27Speaker 1: And so it has something to do with hunting, lifting
- 33:30Speaker 1: weights and like like that. A one time they were there,
- 33:34Speaker 1: honestly got five minutes into the hike, they tip over.
- 33:37Speaker 1: They tip over. Yeah. I would say that one physical
- 33:41Speaker 1: trade of all of us is pretty skinny up her bodies,
- 33:45Speaker 1: Like our legs are all pretty strong. Maybe it was
- 33:51Speaker 1: just checking his bicep to but there I feel like
- 33:55Speaker 1: there's I feel like there's a lot of dudes out
- 33:58Speaker 1: there that, like, on the surface, earned way better shape
- 34:02Speaker 1: than me. But if you go do the ship that
- 34:05Speaker 1: we do, they just collapse mentally. It was a kind
- 34:08Speaker 1: of fitness. Like people think that in shape means that
- 34:11Speaker 1: your next wider than your ears, right, But it's like
- 34:14Speaker 1: in shape for what, Like if you are in a
- 34:16Speaker 1: lot of fights, like if you Corey, if you're getting
- 34:19Speaker 1: a lot of like, yeah, it'd be like, yes, you're
- 34:24Speaker 1: in shape, but like in shape means to be it
- 34:26Speaker 1: needs to be sort of like in shape for what thing. Yeah,
- 34:30Speaker 1: And I think that if you were gonna just based
- 34:32Speaker 1: on limited experience and when I'm home, like I get
- 34:35Speaker 1: a lot of cardio in honey, when I'm home, I
- 34:37Speaker 1: do weights and exercises stuff. But I'm starting to think
- 34:41Speaker 1: that the real thing rather than trying to be like
- 34:44Speaker 1: a thick neck you know. Um, I think that being
- 34:49Speaker 1: all limber and stuff like that totally. What's your thoughts
- 34:53Speaker 1: on that, Yeah, I know you're a real advocate of yoga. Yeah,
- 34:56Speaker 1: I'm thinking I just had to re up my usually
- 34:58Speaker 1: buy a ten pack pass. The costs me I think
- 35:02Speaker 1: seventy five bucks and I think I just bought my
- 35:05Speaker 1: fifth one, so I'm up to forties. Some classes in
- 35:12Speaker 1: the last you know, year, so maybe a year and
- 35:15Speaker 1: a half. And um, I also think it builds some
- 35:19Speaker 1: core strength. It's in me, but not in a way
- 35:23Speaker 1: that like pumping iron, will you know what I mean,
- 35:27Speaker 1: Like it's a different kind of well, I think it's
- 35:31Speaker 1: a different way to get to a similar result, similar
- 35:35Speaker 1: and product. I think it's more effect when when like
- 35:39Speaker 1: in our class, a lot of times we'll have like
- 35:40Speaker 1: a ten minutes session when you've kind of done all
- 35:43Speaker 1: the stretching and and the kumbaya stuff. Kills me, it
- 35:50Speaker 1: kills my wife. My wife's like, let's go down with
- 35:52Speaker 1: let's go down with it. Like is that like it's
- 35:54Speaker 1: it's a real mental challenge because they we always talk
- 35:57Speaker 1: about like staying in the moment, and like when the
- 36:01Speaker 1: teacher and in our classes, they're like, you want to
- 36:03Speaker 1: basically be concentrating on what you're doing and you're breathing
- 36:06Speaker 1: and that's it. So if you have thoughts coming into
- 36:10Speaker 1: your head, like what you're gonna be doing at work,
- 36:12Speaker 1: because I also go like in the middle of the
- 36:13Speaker 1: day at two pm, really and so I'm thinking and
- 36:17Speaker 1: oftentimes I'm like, Okay, what am I gonna do with
- 36:19Speaker 1: the last hour and a half of my day before
- 36:21Speaker 1: I go home. And so it's a real good challenge
- 36:23Speaker 1: for me to say, you know what, don't think about
- 36:25Speaker 1: that right now. You need to be thinking about your
- 36:26Speaker 1: reading and like what you're trying to do here right now,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and just stay in the moment. Let those thoughts come
- 36:31Speaker 1: in and then go come in and go like, don't
- 36:33Speaker 1: because if you I feel like, if you're sitting there
- 36:35Speaker 1: for five minutes being like, yeah, then I'm gonna write
- 36:38Speaker 1: the do this and maybe do some receipts and some
- 36:42Speaker 1: reimburrassments and right a budget for the next episode, and
- 36:45Speaker 1: I'm like, oh shit, you know, I'm not doing yoga anymore. Um.
- 36:50Speaker 1: So I like that aspect of it, you know, like
- 36:52Speaker 1: it is like leave the outside world, focus on what
- 36:55Speaker 1: you're doing there at the moment um. Yeah, that's that's
- 36:59Speaker 1: what turned me off to it, And what still turns
- 37:01Speaker 1: me off to is I'm a secular person, So I
- 37:04Speaker 1: don't like the um. I don't like them sort of
- 37:09Speaker 1: laying on you an Eastern mysticism, a mystical aspect, because
- 37:15Speaker 1: I don't think and I know that they would say
- 37:16Speaker 1: that's all one of the same, Like the Eastern mysticism
- 37:19Speaker 1: is what makes the exercise is good. But I think
- 37:22Speaker 1: that you could be doing all that and they could
- 37:24Speaker 1: be saying, I want you to think of the nastiest
- 37:26Speaker 1: devil person doing the most horrible thing to someone else,
- 37:30Speaker 1: and and and fill your brain with that thought and
- 37:32Speaker 1: do all those exercises, and your body would come out
- 37:35Speaker 1: the same. Like, I don't think your body cares that
- 37:38Speaker 1: you're doing weird Eastern mysticism in your head while doing
- 37:41Speaker 1: the exercises. But I would like to have a yoga place.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I don't know much about it. They don't do mental masturbation.
- 37:46Speaker 1: They don't do like that you're pretending to Eastern the
- 37:50Speaker 1: the truth to be told becrum, which is a pretty
- 37:53Speaker 1: popular form that's the hot yoga. Like my wife, it's
- 37:57Speaker 1: like it's like a franchise. Is he the criminal, Yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 1: he's a criminal. He's a molester, molester for sure. Accused,
- 38:07Speaker 1: But I don't I mean I would I would be
- 38:09Speaker 1: comfortable saying, well, you know, and accused molester. Yeah, but
- 38:15Speaker 1: certainly Uh. One of the kind of profit type personalities
- 38:19Speaker 1: where he thinks he has some sort of yes in yoga,
- 38:23Speaker 1: but he plays that. He created a serious of postures
- 38:26Speaker 1: that I think are pretty damn good. And there's very
- 38:29Speaker 1: little in his dialogue which is copyrighted, which is basically
- 38:33Speaker 1: all the It's like Starbucks. It's the Starbucks of yoga.
- 38:37Speaker 1: You go there and you know exactly what you're gonna get.
- 38:40Speaker 1: You're not gonna have a teacher that it just comes
- 38:43Speaker 1: up with whatever they feel they want to do, because
- 38:47Speaker 1: you know they're twenty years old, and this is a
- 38:49Speaker 1: good idea. But it's a set of postures in a
- 38:52Speaker 1: series in a specific order. Um and there's very little
- 38:56Speaker 1: spiritual uh component to it. And and hata yoga is
- 39:01Speaker 1: a physical type yoga. But is it even yoga if
- 39:05Speaker 1: there's not a mind body connection. I mean, that's that's
- 39:09Speaker 1: the whole thing, right, It's just body. It's calisthenics basically.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I mean the history of yoga, modern yoga is basically
- 39:19Speaker 1: amalgamation of calisthenics and some some historic like spiritual practices
- 39:29Speaker 1: all meshed together. I mean, the yoga that we think
- 39:33Speaker 1: of is like the one that that America, I don't know,
- 39:37Speaker 1: found out about in the six years or seventies. It
- 39:40Speaker 1: was like a colonial combination of in India. But but
- 39:46Speaker 1: there was like Western influences of military calisthenics and like aerobics,
- 39:53Speaker 1: and I mean it's it's not as simple to say
- 39:55Speaker 1: it's like, oh, the practice that we're doing now in
- 39:58Speaker 1: the yogas woo you you go to you was like
- 40:00Speaker 1: some two thousand year old yoga practice. Yeah it's new.
- 40:04Speaker 1: It's like a California roll. I mean, yeah, it's just
- 40:07Speaker 1: not that old. Yeah. So, and it all seems to
- 40:13Speaker 1: me it seems like no brainer that there is a
- 40:16Speaker 1: mind body connection that doesn't seem like but you're also
- 40:19Speaker 1: trying to commercialize very basic religious physical But in our
- 40:26Speaker 1: modern lives we do a lot of activities that are
- 40:29Speaker 1: not very good for us. Sitting at computers all day long, um,
- 40:34Speaker 1: and so doing doing it, doing something where you have
- 40:38Speaker 1: to be uncomfortable kind of think within yourself, it seems
- 40:43Speaker 1: like a religious part. No, no, I dig the physical component,
- 40:49Speaker 1: Like you are uncomfortable. They were telling you to do
- 40:53Speaker 1: something uncomfortable and say like, embrace that discomfort, continue to
- 40:58Speaker 1: do it and don't free out. Yeah. I like that.
- 41:02Speaker 1: The room is hot as I mean, is it's hot,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and you want like you walk in there and you're
- 41:07Speaker 1: like can I can I leave now? And there are
- 41:10Speaker 1: people people not freaking out, breathing under no breathing, and
- 41:15Speaker 1: understanding that your body will tell you to freak out
- 41:18Speaker 1: because you're not used to something. But that does not
- 41:21Speaker 1: mean that you are not able to cope with that stimulus.
- 41:26Speaker 1: You just you can. You can control your body's response
- 41:30Speaker 1: to things like what you're saying, because I will oftentimes
- 41:35Speaker 1: I think that that that diving in very cold water.
- 41:40Speaker 1: You're getting very cold water, and and there's way like
- 41:45Speaker 1: if you're free diving and there's like bad waves and
- 41:48Speaker 1: there's just a lot of stuff going on. You tend
- 41:51Speaker 1: to be like, all of a sudden, realize that I'm
- 41:52Speaker 1: freaked out for no reason, just like the atmosphere, the circumstances.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I'm in this water, Like your whole life, you try
- 42:01Speaker 1: and like not to be in cold water. Right, you
- 42:04Speaker 1: turn the shower on, you keep sticking your hand in
- 42:06Speaker 1: there to make sure that when you get in there
- 42:08Speaker 1: it's not like that. And you get in it, and
- 42:11Speaker 1: I feel myself also, I'll catch myself like why am
- 42:15Speaker 1: I freaked out? Just calm down, Yeah, calm down, and
- 42:21Speaker 1: it's not a problem. Breath is a big component to it,
- 42:24Speaker 1: and breath is a big component to yoga. And I
- 42:26Speaker 1: think of you guys hustling towards animals, like full aerobic threshold,
- 42:33Speaker 1: breathing hard, and then you have to take a shot
- 42:37Speaker 1: and you have to control your breath. And that's that's
- 42:40Speaker 1: something you can practice. Uh, it's like overcoming this like
- 42:44Speaker 1: physical discomfort, calming yourself down. It's like this. It's uh,
- 42:49Speaker 1: it's it's a mind body connection where you're saying, I'm
- 42:54Speaker 1: freaking out right now because I just ran up this
- 42:56Speaker 1: mountain and there's this buck I've been looking for for
- 42:59Speaker 1: six days of investment in all this like existential stuff
- 43:03Speaker 1: is coming into play, but you just have to like
- 43:07Speaker 1: like chill. Yeah, I had that hand to me the
- 43:10Speaker 1: other night where after we shot the Bark and it
- 43:15Speaker 1: was getting dark and it was hard to get over
- 43:16Speaker 1: to where the buck was to go down a big
- 43:19Speaker 1: hell hole. Should we start with the whole buck story
- 43:22Speaker 1: from the beginning of then I got I got something.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I gotta the portions of it. Well, it's amazing story
- 43:30Speaker 1: portions of it. So we get onto a w before
- 43:33Speaker 1: we get off to the yoga thing, because I put
- 43:35Speaker 1: yoga and CrossFit in the same category. It's like it's
- 43:39Speaker 1: getting good at something in order to be good at it. No, no,
- 43:41Speaker 1: but doing something simulating something to get good at something
- 43:45Speaker 1: that you actually apply. And it's like, why don't people
- 43:48Speaker 1: like CrossFit and yoga. It's like, I'm gonna do these
- 43:51Speaker 1: things that will make me better than outdoors? Why not
- 43:53Speaker 1: just go spend time in the outdoors If you have
- 43:55Speaker 1: spare time, I don't go bike in climbing. Like it's
- 43:59Speaker 1: like you're in this controlled environment trying to be comfortable
- 44:02Speaker 1: in stress. Why not go Like if you have time
- 44:06Speaker 1: to do an hour of yoga session, go on a height,
- 44:08Speaker 1: go on a run. Observed, my brother observed, the only
- 44:10Speaker 1: thing cross fit makes you good at is CrossFit. Yeah,
- 44:14Speaker 1: And that's that's all activities, right, All activities are inherently
- 44:18Speaker 1: activity specific, like like the brain games, like all the
- 44:23Speaker 1: you know, crossword puzzles, like to increase your mental acuity
- 44:27Speaker 1: or whatever. Most studies points to the fact that you
- 44:30Speaker 1: just get better doing crossword puzzles. But there is cross
- 44:34Speaker 1: training is effective and if you just all go cross trains,
- 44:42Speaker 1: if you just if you run all day long, every day,
- 44:46Speaker 1: that's all you're gonna be good at. You you know,
- 44:47Speaker 1: you usually you often get injured, and so it's a
- 44:51Speaker 1: way of still exercising, recovering, and gaining some new like
- 44:58Speaker 1: and all of us endurance athlete hiker types or hamstrings
- 45:02Speaker 1: are like so incredibly just taught very Yanni's proud now
- 45:08Speaker 1: that he can touch his toes, but it was probably
- 45:11Speaker 1: a new dude, I can lay my hands flat on
- 45:14Speaker 1: the floor. No, but you guys are missing my point.
- 45:18Speaker 1: It's like, get outside. No, I'm anxiously want I still
- 45:22Speaker 1: badly want to get back to your point. But but Rick,
- 45:26Speaker 1: I'm trying to You got a diverse, diverse fire outside
- 45:32Speaker 1: in an uncontrolled set. Yes, to your point. I'll say
- 45:37Speaker 1: that I'll lead it off. I say this. I have
- 45:40Speaker 1: an acquaintance who's a very very accomplished mountaineer, and he'll
- 45:44Speaker 1: have things where he's gonna go do something and he'd
- 45:46Speaker 1: be like, you know, you should know before we go
- 45:49Speaker 1: do this. Oh no, no, no, I do cross fit.
- 45:53Speaker 1: So climbing this four ft peak, you cry, we get
- 46:00Speaker 1: these rocks. If you carry the rocks around, um, keep
- 46:03Speaker 1: our score on a chalkboard. And then they're like, do
- 46:07Speaker 1: you mean it's like not, the best way to train
- 46:11Speaker 1: for hunting is to put a thirty pound pack on
- 46:13Speaker 1: your back and go walk around where you're gonna hunt,
- 46:18Speaker 1: not like, oh I'm ready for hunting season. Been hitting
- 46:20Speaker 1: the stairmasters. Yeah, like the heads yea. With anything at
- 46:25Speaker 1: all oversifying nature, you can. Yeah, but a lot of
- 46:30Speaker 1: people have like these, you know, weird scheduled lives that
- 46:32Speaker 1: we basically don't purtect better nothing. It's all better than nothing.
- 46:38Speaker 1: It's not the thing. There's there's two When when I'm
- 46:40Speaker 1: gonna take a new person on a rug and hunt,
- 46:41Speaker 1: I tell them two things. Get your boots and break
- 46:43Speaker 1: them in and get in shape. They never do either
- 46:46Speaker 1: of those things. There's no get your boots broken in
- 46:50Speaker 1: or warm? How many times don't like the people will
- 46:56Speaker 1: not do those two things. There's no way ninety minutes
- 46:59Speaker 1: across fit for or five days a week prepares whatever
- 47:03Speaker 1: it is. There's no way it prepares you for a
- 47:06Speaker 1: sixteen hour day of looking for deer, hiking for deer,
- 47:12Speaker 1: running after deer, and being mentally drained the entire day.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Like there's yeah, there's there's nothing. Nothing but it will
- 47:22Speaker 1: give you if you already have some endurance space, it'll
- 47:28Speaker 1: it'll help you in some Yeah, you can't go do that.
- 47:33Speaker 1: I mean obviously, like if you're out of shape athlete
- 47:37Speaker 1: and hiking all over the place, and then you're in
- 47:40Speaker 1: CrossFit for two months and you haven't hiked once and
- 47:44Speaker 1: you go hiking. You're gonna feel fine, but you can't
- 47:46Speaker 1: transition from basic CrossFit to go. This is the thing.
- 47:50Speaker 1: It's like, it's any of the endurance things. It's like
- 47:53Speaker 1: if you just lift weights and you expect to like go,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I don't know, A big game not gonna happen. A
- 48:00Speaker 1: walk got to be a nature. It's low intensity for
- 48:06Speaker 1: long hours, sidehill and falling down. Is it hard to
- 48:14Speaker 1: It's hard? Walking? Yeah, walk it's hard. It depends for
- 48:19Speaker 1: how long. Walking isn't like a pretty kind of walking.
- 48:22Speaker 1: This kind of hunt entails. The only reason I know
- 48:25Speaker 1: it's hard because so many people fail so miserably at it.
- 48:29Speaker 1: I know, But is it hard for you because you've
- 48:32Speaker 1: been doing it for a really exactly, that's what you
- 48:39Speaker 1: gotta do. That's like, that's kind of one of the
- 48:41Speaker 1: things I was gonna get. A's like, what do you
- 48:43Speaker 1: do to stay in shape? Or hunting? It's just like
- 48:46Speaker 1: you kind of hunt stay in shape hunting when I'm
- 48:48Speaker 1: home and if I'm not gonna hunt for a week,
- 48:50Speaker 1: or I'm not gonna be on the woods or mountains
- 48:51Speaker 1: for a week, then I'll do weights. I don't know why,
- 48:55Speaker 1: but if you had the opportunity, I mean, you're obligated
- 48:58Speaker 1: in other realms, but if you had opportunity, you would
- 49:02Speaker 1: go out and you know, go up to a peak
- 49:05Speaker 1: or something. But I can't go. That's not something I'm
- 49:09Speaker 1: gonna go do for an hour now. But for just
- 49:11Speaker 1: just a performance perspective, like if a sprinter just a
- 49:16Speaker 1: hundred yard hundred meter dash, just run a hundred, they're
- 49:20Speaker 1: not going to be very good at it. They have
- 49:22Speaker 1: to do all sorts of different types of training. They
- 49:24Speaker 1: do very short things, very long things, weights, Like you
- 49:29Speaker 1: got to optimize your specific activity, you have to do
- 49:33Speaker 1: other things. But I think a huge point that's being
- 49:36Speaker 1: overlooked here is like the mental aspect of it. Like
- 49:39Speaker 1: you gotta know that you're gonna like it's gonna be
- 49:43Speaker 1: a shitty day, Like you're gonna hurt, you're gonna fall down,
- 49:48Speaker 1: you're gonna be sore, you're gonna be tired, like shapeage,
- 49:52Speaker 1: if you're gonna spook animals. If you don't know that
- 49:56Speaker 1: going into it, then you're just it doesn't matter how
- 49:58Speaker 1: good to shape you're in. I feel like that's a
- 50:00Speaker 1: real good point. Mental yeah, yeah, if you're not able
- 50:02Speaker 1: to do it. That's why there's two things I was
- 50:04Speaker 1: gonna talk about. I was gonna mention, what's wrong on almos?
- 50:08Speaker 1: Look like you're in pain? You honest, he is, He's
- 50:10Speaker 1: not mentally disfocused on his pain. Someone saying something you
- 50:15Speaker 1: just don't like legs and lungs. Our friend, Rourke denver Um,
- 50:24Speaker 1: he ran the for for a period in his career.
- 50:28Speaker 1: He ran the Buds program, so it's the the like
- 50:33Speaker 1: the elimination course for the Navy Seals. He ran. That
- 50:39Speaker 1: program is obviously extremely yea mentally physically. He said, Oh,
- 50:46Speaker 1: we're looking for We're just looking for those people who
- 50:49Speaker 1: cannot who cannot quit. He says, there's probably many ways
- 50:53Speaker 1: to find them. We find them through the application of
- 50:57Speaker 1: cold water and PT. He says, you could find the
- 51:01Speaker 1: same people, you know, with hot water or whatever. It's
- 51:07Speaker 1: like you're just looking for the guy that won't quite
- 51:11Speaker 1: other other military disciplines. It's just like we're gonna put
- 51:14Speaker 1: a ton of weight in your backpack and you are
- 51:16Speaker 1: just going to walk. You can eat as much as
- 51:18Speaker 1: you'd like, You're just going to walk and we will
- 51:22Speaker 1: then find the couple percent of you who cannot quit.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Another funny thing he said to me was I was
- 51:31Speaker 1: asking how they do push ups there, and he said,
- 51:36Speaker 1: you can do them however you want. You're gonna do
- 51:38Speaker 1: five thousand them today. Uh. It is it's that endurance,
- 51:45Speaker 1: that pain tolerance, the the people with no quitting them. Yeah,
- 51:50Speaker 1: and there is some physiological things going on too, I
- 51:53Speaker 1: believe so. I believe so, But I think that a
- 51:56Speaker 1: big part of like, yeah, to bring a full circle,
- 51:59Speaker 1: I take a big part of hunting fitness, and I'm
- 52:01Speaker 1: talking about like very demanding, kind of like wilderness type hunting.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Um is just finding it in you too, be calm
- 52:12Speaker 1: and stressed. So it's like it gets dark. I'll say, there,
- 52:14Speaker 1: we got this buck. I found myself stressed for a minute.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Like by the time I got over, I shot it.
- 52:21Speaker 1: With twelve minutes I legal shooting light left. By the
- 52:23Speaker 1: time I got over to where it was, I couldn't
- 52:26Speaker 1: find it. Knew I knew I had a good hit.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I couldn't even figure out where it was because I
- 52:31Speaker 1: had to cross the canyon to get over there. And
- 52:34Speaker 1: I was like, oh, it's dark now, and there's and
- 52:36Speaker 1: just like creating problems in my head. It's gonna be
- 52:39Speaker 1: so late by the time whatever, and just be like
- 52:43Speaker 1: just catch yourself, because I see sometimes people don't catch themselves. Well.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I remember one time we got a little bit turned
- 52:49Speaker 1: around the Arctic and a guy I was took honting,
- 52:52Speaker 1: it was his first hunting tripever just took off into
- 52:55Speaker 1: the night. He got so freaked out about where we
- 53:00Speaker 1: were headed that he just got in his head in
- 53:02Speaker 1: some direction and just went and he like had a
- 53:04Speaker 1: panic attack. I think that's a big part of it.
- 53:08Speaker 1: I think a big probably too, just like haven't been
- 53:10Speaker 1: the just like that that uh, trying not to quit. Yeah,
- 53:14Speaker 1: like you got like halfway or three quarters of the
- 53:17Speaker 1: way up in the mountain when you're like this sucks.
- 53:22Speaker 1: You need to be able to look up and be like, Okay,
- 53:25Speaker 1: I just gotta keep walking, no big deal. I was
- 53:29Speaker 1: talking to an old man one time after I was
- 53:31Speaker 1: at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation thing and in Las Vegas,
- 53:33Speaker 1: and I was talking to old man. He's a very
- 53:35Speaker 1: accomplished a big game hunter, and you know he did
- 53:39Speaker 1: a lot of sheep hunting, and we got to talk
- 53:41Speaker 1: about the demands of sheep hunting, and I kind of
- 53:44Speaker 1: like veered the conversation toward aspects of physical fitness, and
- 53:49Speaker 1: it made him uncomfortable, and he said, really, it just
- 53:55Speaker 1: kind of comes down to putting one ft in front
- 53:56Speaker 1: of the other. Yeah, it's a project. I look at
- 53:59Speaker 1: this a project. But I will say, like when you're
- 54:03Speaker 1: hunting with other dudes or chicks or whatever, like it
- 54:10Speaker 1: can be tough because like we might be on the
- 54:13Speaker 1: same like level of mental and physical ability, but like
- 54:20Speaker 1: there's no way I can walk up a hill quite
- 54:22Speaker 1: as fast as you're honest, because it's freaking stride is
- 54:25Speaker 1: like five times longer, you know what I mean. Like
- 54:29Speaker 1: he was, um, no, he wasn't going too fast tonight.
- 54:35Speaker 1: He's creeping normally the eagles is um faster than but
- 54:40Speaker 1: to not. I kept kind of bumping into him. But
- 54:44Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like, when you hunt was
- 54:46Speaker 1: even if you hunt with someone who's in shape, like
- 54:49Speaker 1: you still might not be on the same timing, you
- 54:52Speaker 1: know what I mean. Yeah, like you're gonna get there
- 54:56Speaker 1: when you get there, But yeah, the eagles a fast walk.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Everyone has their strengths. My final thought here on the
- 55:04Speaker 1: yoga why do you hate this conversation so much? I
- 55:09Speaker 1: don't hate it all. I feel like I really enjoy it.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I'm like thinking about the next time I'm when we
- 55:15Speaker 1: go to my yoga class. We're gonna we're gonna go together.
- 55:18Speaker 1: We're going. Yeah, okay, so when you're there, we're gonna go.
- 55:24Speaker 1: But do you really enjoy just doing yoga? I want
- 55:28Speaker 1: to get better at doing yoga? But this hunting season,
- 55:31Speaker 1: I felt as good, good as I've ever maybe not ever,
- 55:36Speaker 1: maybe not as as I felt. And I was twenty
- 55:39Speaker 1: and elk hunt for the first time, but like in
- 55:42Speaker 1: a long time, just like it's like, it's not it's
- 55:46Speaker 1: not like hunting. Do you feel like you were in
- 55:48Speaker 1: better shape when you were twenty? No way, Well I
- 55:52Speaker 1: was probably still smoking cigarettes at twenty, but would smoke
- 55:57Speaker 1: my twenty year old self just drinks? Yeah, I think, yeah,
- 56:03Speaker 1: But anyway, sorry, go ahead. It just surprised me you
- 56:06Speaker 1: because I we're in there. I was like, I quit
- 56:10Speaker 1: smoking cigarettes and I got in a pretty good shay
- 56:12Speaker 1: if I started running, you know, a veil half drinking
- 56:16Speaker 1: quite so much? Yeah, right, but I was gonna say.
- 56:21Speaker 1: It's like the the things that like, even if you
- 56:25Speaker 1: went hunting more and try to replicate it and you're like,
- 56:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna go out and train the hunt today on
- 56:31Speaker 1: the mountain with a backpack on and I'm gonna sneak
- 56:33Speaker 1: up on deer, You're still just not gonna put yourself
- 56:37Speaker 1: somehow in those positions that you actually do when you're hunting.
- 56:41Speaker 1: It's like it just be almost too hard to like
- 56:43Speaker 1: mentally be like, oh, right now, I'm gonna act like
- 56:46Speaker 1: I got into some deer and get down on my
- 56:48Speaker 1: knees and then kind of go halfway down and just
- 56:51Speaker 1: kind of sitting there on the side of this mountain
- 56:53Speaker 1: like this with my knees stuck on a rock fifteen
- 56:57Speaker 1: minutes and that's good night. I'd be like I'm gonna
- 57:01Speaker 1: go train on the mountain to hunt. But that's where
- 57:04Speaker 1: yoga I feel like, yes, in these positions when I'm like, oh,
- 57:07Speaker 1: my names and I'm like, okay, it's gonna I gotta
- 57:09Speaker 1: sit here, because if I if I do like this,
- 57:11Speaker 1: they're gonna see me. I'm gonna get up on like
- 57:14Speaker 1: you know, like lift my head up another foot. She's
- 57:17Speaker 1: gonna see my head or whatever. Those are the kind
- 57:19Speaker 1: of like things that were Yo. I'm like, man, I
- 57:22Speaker 1: feel great doing this right now. I've been stuck in
- 57:24Speaker 1: this position for forty minutes and I'm not like in
- 57:27Speaker 1: pain or stressing about it that I need to move
- 57:30Speaker 1: my leg. So I get that. Yeah, what else big
- 57:38Speaker 1: Bucks and little Bucks? You want to talk about big
- 57:40Speaker 1: Bucks a little Bucks? What about coyotes too? Oh yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 1: Two times this week we had coyotes coming run off
- 57:51Speaker 1: or her ass run off, or her ass and or
- 57:54Speaker 1: her ass box we were looking at. One was yeah,
- 58:00Speaker 1: go ahead, Well one interesting bark, the smart the very
- 58:04Speaker 1: interesting buck just let everyone else go and stood still
- 58:09Speaker 1: for an hour. He was in a little aspen grove
- 58:14Speaker 1: with a bunch of dolls. I don't know how many
- 58:15Speaker 1: dolls came out of there. Eight The eagle glasses up.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Three coyotes coming down the mountain, charging down the mountain,
- 58:23Speaker 1: says they're gonna go into that asp and pass for
- 58:25Speaker 1: all the d Are deer come out of there? I
- 58:28Speaker 1: likened it to squeeze in the two two just do
- 58:31Speaker 1: your started shooting out of the ask patch. And there's
- 58:35Speaker 1: a buck we were watching and there knew he was
- 58:37Speaker 1: in there. A good one stands up next son of
- 58:40Speaker 1: a bitch would not move the stock still. He's like,
- 58:44Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be running out here all excited getting
- 58:46Speaker 1: shot at by guns. I like where I'm gonna stay.
- 58:49Speaker 1: I'm brushed out and let the ladies run around, and
- 58:53Speaker 1: I am not moving because dudes that move get shot at.
- 58:57Speaker 1: The Kayats moved through, stood for a while, longer, ever longer,
- 59:03Speaker 1: back down, and then laid right back down even though
- 59:07Speaker 1: all the ladies had left. The bast and patch cleaned out. Yeah,
- 59:12Speaker 1: they came back to him a couple couple, but it
- 59:15Speaker 1: cleaned out, and he was like weighing. That's how big
- 59:18Speaker 1: box get big. He's weighing in his mind, like what's worse,
- 59:23Speaker 1: I'll stomp that Coy's like, they're all running. I'm not
- 59:26Speaker 1: gonna expose myself in the middle of the day, because
- 59:30Speaker 1: what coyote gonna go after a running deer? More than
- 59:33Speaker 1: likely later we got to see the same bar Brody
- 59:38Speaker 1: two times, the same buck where we saw him see
- 59:44Speaker 1: a person, in this case Brody, no fault brodies some
- 59:51Speaker 1: dolls to run around getting all excited. He just very
- 59:55Speaker 1: kind of like slowly, not a lot of hub ub
- 59:58Speaker 1: just kind of crept out of the area, no hopping
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: and jumping around, sticking his head up. He's just like, yeah,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: that was a smart buck. Yeah you see, Like watching him,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: you go like, that's how you become six years old
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: with all manner, people all trying to kill you. But
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Kyote round number two is kind of a completely different situation.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: What played his cards completely differently. Yeah, he was just
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: with those dose those dose booked. He was with eight
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: or nine dolls, coyotes coming rolling through the dose all
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: books spill off the hill a couple minutes later for
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: drift back around right where they came from, but not him. Yep,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: that buck decided that it was worthwhile to go to
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: a new area to just be away from the act
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: for a while. Yeah. I didn't go far, went to
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: where he could just watch stuff happening. I felt like,
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: it's good, it's funny to watch that, like the gears
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: turning in the yad Man assessing risks in Arctic Dreams,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Barry Lopez has a he's talking about polar bearer, how
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: long polar bearer can live, and he has line in
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: there where he says that, um, some if the bear
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: doesn't make any mistakes twenty five years. That's impressive. Yeah,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: And I just thought it was like a good way
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: of putting it. If he doesn't make any mistakes, it
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: learns not to make mistakes, doesn't make mistakes. Do you
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: make mistakes? What's I mean a big buck? What's their
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: long terms? Ancient? But like and if they weren't going
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: to get shot, what's their life expects? See in the wild. Now,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: I can tell you this not nearly as long as females,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: because they run themselves to ragged. So you have like
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: twenty year old cow elk turn it up all the time,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: a ten year old bulls very old. No like doll
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: sheep again, you can have used eighteen nineteen years old.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: A ram tends to go very quickly from being top
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: dog to dead dog. I think the man deplete themselves.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: It's not it's okay to say not getting shot at,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: but I think it's important to add on to that
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: that It's like, you know, we always talk about like
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: hunter mortality, you know, getting shot at like such a
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: small percentage of why these animals are dying, you know,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: at these at any age. But like like you're saying,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: they wear themselves ragged and so they're more susceptible to
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: you know, starvation, preda and predation, you know, and so
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: a lot like wolves and Yellowstone. They're always taking it
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: down big worn down bulls. Absolutely, yeah, I will find
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: it like lions target. Lions will target run it out slow,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and I imagine it's I mean, it's very probably closely
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: related a big Bucks that's in his prime and Bucks
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: that's about well prime and over the hill or right,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: I think. I mean, I think it's seven or eight
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: year old Neil. Their buck is ancient and they don't
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: have like a retirement. They don't have like, oh, look
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: at those young bucks off chasing ladies, remember those days.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: It's like last year was a really good year and
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: now I'm dead. I think that would go for humans
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: if you like a good twenty years. And then there's
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: like the special old horse pasture and you're always like,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: what are those horses like? Yeah, they're like they did
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: their work. Now they just get to live out their
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: days on that pass because they closed all the slaughter facilities.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: But we also got to see we also got to
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: see a lot of cool young buck behavior too, which
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: is you know the thing that Brodon I were talking
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: about is um The thing I like hunting milder. In
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: open countries, you see so much body language, social interactions
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: with the animals, so you'll get to view them for
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: a long time. Something you mentioned last night, Brodie, after
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: that close encounter with the dough and two fonds, is
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: that their vocal interaction that Yeah, yeah, a lot of
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: people I may not know it. I mean, I'm sure
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Steve and Janice have heard it. But if you're real
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: close to them and it's a quiet day, they talk
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: to each other a lot, like little grunts and muse
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: and stuff. And people don't think a deer is like
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: a vocal animal, but I've heard a lot where a
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: dough talks to her fonds and it's cool if you're
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: close enough to hear it. And one of his turkey
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: hunting taps, Will Primo talks about with turkeys because there's
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: all the sounds, you know, because it's some about when
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: you just sit and have turkeys come by, they're they're
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: making all kinds of noises, but not noises that carry
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: at all. But when you're super close to me, you
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: realize they're constantly carrying yeah, like like in all like
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: in audible to you like you're not gonna hear it
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: on the right there, you realize, like, man, they are
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: just communicating I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, I'm here
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: to each other, you know. And then the body language too,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: like we saw those spawns like bigger and with each
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: other and getting nasty with she with each other, and
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: the the young bucks nose and the does and the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: does not paying attention to him, the big bucks chasing
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: does and giants. Certain The thing I like a lot
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: is when you're glad when you glass up some deer
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: that you locate other deer based on you'll you'll realize
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: the dear is there that you cannot see based on
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: the tension in the group of deer when a new
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: deer is coming. The buck I shot today, the dough
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: stepped into a little opening that was a deer's body
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: with wide and she turned around and looked down the hill,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: and I knew that that buck was behind her. I
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: couldn't see him, but I knew it was coming. She's
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: not yeah, because it's the fall, because this is that dude. Yeah,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: this had his nose in my hand. Ye yep. Know
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: when we were first classing those ones up and we
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: just saw does and we didn't even see the buck.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: But then we saw I saw through the that's right.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: You even said, you said, terrible little l c V
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: viewfinder on looks like she's getting pestered. Yeah, you said,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I just saw one of them get past. There was
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: a buck in the game. It's very true. Yeah, Like
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: you don't see that sitting at a tree stand and
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: with a bunch of hardwood oaks around you, Like you
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: don't see the deer long white tails long enough to
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: see much of that. Yeah, I think it does happen,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: not nearly, like like a whole morning watching watching it
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: from a thousand yards away, just over the course of
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: two hours of interaction among one, you know, group of deer.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: It's super cool. I mean it was cool to go
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: from Pow, which was our last hunt, you know, where
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: he catch just a such glimpses and this this this round,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: we saw so many deer and glassed up so many
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: like it was so many stocks and so many like
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: like from my camera guy perspective, like over the rifle,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: whether we were going to shoot or not, I had
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: you know, the host in frame with the animal. Yeah,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: it's just a cool it's a cool thing. Me and
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Corey did see an interaction that in po Double, even
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: though that the glimpses are so fleeting of deer when
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: you're in the coastal rainforest, we saw an interaction where
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I blew a fun distress call and a dope came
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: in with the pahn and then for whatever reason kicked
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: the ship out of the faun like ten ft away
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: from that tenth I'm exaggerating, but it was extremely close,
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: like you've been a bad child kind of thing. I
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: was wondering because she comes in, because she's coming running
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: into she's coming running in presumably it's like you're making
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: the sound of a phone getting attacked. She runs in
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: to defend the faon the fawn foster. I wonder if
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: she's saying get out here to the fawn, if she's
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: saying don't the same way if you like, see if
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: you're with your kids and you see like an altercation
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: break out in the parking lot, like if your kids
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: were to like run towards the altercation or a fire
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: or something you like into the altercation, right like what
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: get you know, what are you doing? You go there?
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: You know? Or like yeah like that, And I kept
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: wondering like what was the thing there? Where she turning?
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: She kind of like she was from but she she
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: also could have been saying like, all right, if you
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: get closer, we see the predator. This is what you
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: have to do. You need to stand up and like
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: punch up. Because they both kind of kicked at each other,
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: like the fawn kind of offended. Remember, let's get abusive.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Let's let's get feisty there for a while too. Yeah,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: Yanni's buddy J Miller was just telling me the other
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: night about um. I didn't see how I didn't use
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: his full names so folks can't look him up. Keep
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: his secret there, J Miller. Uh, I mean, there's lots
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: had a buddy of his call up and the guy
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: every time he cuts hay bales. J Miller's buddy cuts
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: hay bales open round bales or no price square bales.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: Either way, he takes all the twine and lays all
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: the twine over defense, and over the years has built
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: up quite an accumulation to twine on the fence where
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: he feeds his livestock. A buck comes in there to
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: get hey left over, You left over Hey, and he's
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: feeding around where all the twine is and gets himself
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: so wrapped up in the twine that he's stuck to
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: the fence. For some reason. I think they were like loops,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: is how I understood it, because he was like taking
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: the loops off the bail somehow and then just instead
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: of cutting it, taking the loop off and throwing it
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: over a single post. I understood it as he was
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: taking the loops off, because then that that gives us,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: like the bucks, something to get actually get caught in,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: because I feel like it was just like a you know,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: one string and then you don't really get caught up.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: So he had thrown these loops over like a single
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: post and accumulating over years and years and years, and
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: right in that area there was left over. Hey, but
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: come in eating that and gets entangled and then he's
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: a Japanese cowboy. Yeah, it was very important that we
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: understood that story. Oh yeah, because then you get to
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: do like, you know whatever you think you're Japanese cowboy
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: accent is Mr Miller was doing that accent and he
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: loves the guy. Great neighbor, I think it is. But anyways,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: he says he's got a buck stuck in the twine
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and uh, I guess he went down there with what
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: did he say he had sick? Which find the hell
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: that had a sickle? I don't know, but he was
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: going in there and yeah, slicing two, three, four, how
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: many ever, you know, chunks of twine jumping out. And
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: then when he finally got the last chunk that freed
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: that buck, that buck stood and looked at Mr. Miller.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: He said, you must be the one that caused this problem,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: and then came after him. I believe to think now
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: the story win that he grabbed him by the horns,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: but still the force pushed him, because we're talking about
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: the power, and little lines ripped through his jeans, parallel
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: lines up each like, and he said that he'll never
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: do that again, never the next time hes cowboy calls
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: me up about a buck store, staying out of it.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: We had this buck wander around our our neighborhood a
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: few years ago. We call him Ropy, a big buck.
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: But he had this rope. Was the name kind of
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: after you, no no Ropy rope because he had this
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: like length of rope and his antlers. And I had
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: a buddy that lived across town from me, not far
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: away a half mile called me up and said, rope,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: he's got this four corn. Roby was big, and I
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: don't know why a fourcorn would have been messing with him,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: but it was after the rut and they were fooling
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: around or whatever, and he got this four corn stuck
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: and his antlers in the rope busted that four corn's neck,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: but the four ky was still alive, and they had
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: to come and shoot that four corn and cut him
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: loose from that right in town. Yeah, now you know
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: how you were wondering, like why they'd be fighting. Uh
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: years ago, my brother had a big horn sheep tag
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: and we glassed up some rams and it was a
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: nice big ran that we were after. But he's running
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: with a bunch of little shavers and we crawled in
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: on him and he got all set up waiting for
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: a shot, and the big ones wouldn't get up. The
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: little ones would. Honestly that I wish I had this
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: on film. The little ones would go up to the
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: big one and hook their horn onto his horn like
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you're hooking a car to a trailer, to try to
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: drag him onto his feet too spar wanting to play
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: with him, basically, but they come into his curl hook
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: their curl on his curl and try to back up
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: and lift him up onto his maybe a way of
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: learning or something, and then he would get up and
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: do a little number with them, and in in fact,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: it was one of those times that boom, Yeah he
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: was the last fight, the last fight he was ever in. Yeah,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: I was like they just wanted to square up with Mr. Peah.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I think there's more to it, though, because they do
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: a lot of that, the sheep especially. I think bucks
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and bulls do it too outside of the rut when
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: they're not actually fighting, And I think a lot of
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: it is because they don't have a mirror to look
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: at and go, oh, I'm a eight class thick horn
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: timber button, I'm kicking ass like they That's how they
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: have to look who's around them and then go and
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: feel what it feels like when they're putting their heads together.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: Fight a little bit, smart a little bit, and they
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: don't always have to do it to the death. They
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: can do it gently, get a sense of who, if
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: what they have on their heads, and what kind of
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: diamonds they you know, they could maybe exert then later
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: actually during the run in particular, I've seen bulls like
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: late season bulls very gently spiring with each other, just
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: like tickling antlers with cal We saw some a couple
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: of bulls kind of tearing it up late. Now I
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I read I never looked into the sea the validity
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: of this, but I remember reading something to the effect
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: of that, oftentimes a big buck we'll spend a lot
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: of time with box outside of his age class, and
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: someone was was was postulating that it was, uh, it
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: alleviated some stress that if he's hanging out with a
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: bunch of peers, there's more hierarchical fighting going on, and
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: when you have these sort of separated age classes, they
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: don't need just and as I don't know, it sounds
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: so what I'm saying, like a theory on that was
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: it's just it's easier for them to be in a
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: situation one that that's like a very clearly established hierarchy.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: That makes sense, like like to me, that makes sense
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: like post rut, like pre rut, like when they're still
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: in velvet, you often see like a bunch of bucks
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: of the same class together because they're just not mad
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: at each other that time of year. You know, that's why, Um,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: it's stressful with me for me to home with the eagle, right, yeah,
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: because who's better a Glass who can walk faster? And
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: there is like this dirt I think got stressful. I
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: think dirt would hike him. Though, you guys working on
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: I think your your your assessment of dirt needs to
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: be upgraded because he's starting to see animals a lot.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I feel like it is getting good, yes, better, not good.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I can't carry him. I can't outgir him, but I
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: can help Glass. You definitely known as much chest Harrison.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: I can't hear him, Correy, what do you think about
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: all that's been pretty quiet? No, this one has been awesome.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I mean it's challenging in the in the physical sense,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: but then again, like you said earlier about watching the
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: personalities of the each animal because you can see so
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: far out there and learn a lot about him, and
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: like you can almost maybe pick up on personalities of
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: each animal, which is really cool without anthropomorphizing the whole thing. Like,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: oh that's a cute one, she's angry, and yeah, if
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: you get the name him, Like like we get that
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: one buck that Steve got, we got to watch it,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: we got to chase it for ten hours. Yeah, both
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: of us how he his approach with the lady Storm
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: and that guy. That was the longest hunt I've ever
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: been involved with for one animal, and both of us were.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: I mean it was dawn until dark NonStop. It was
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: shortly after daylight till twelve minutes before. Yeah. That that was. Yeah,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: one of the most satisfying hunting days of my life
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: for sure. Johnny. What was that closing thought you had
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: about Dirtmouth? It was ready for thought? Yeah, before ready
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: to go there, I can start, I can kick on
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: any other Is there any other pressing issues when you
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: discussed that can't be that would fall outside of clothing
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: thought hikers and bikers? Oh, Rick, real quick? Have have
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: you got? Have? Have ladies contacted you? Have women contacted you?
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Based on me plugging you as a single man. I
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: received one message on one on takes that just said
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: I'm a lady and I listened to there there's a
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: woman who's listening right well, I feel like there might
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: be more than this to my mother in law used
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: to listen. Listen you want to hear a story? Did
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: I feel horrible? I'll tell that story real quick, But first,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Rick Um, one woman has contacted you. There might be
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: there might be a few that have followed me, but
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: they haven't. They haven't been me or just you know,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: not interested. Yeah, they you know, followed me to see
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: all my Instagram photos and they're like, yeah, this guy
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: but too heartsy. But at the very least, Uh, you
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: do have female listeners. Steve should be proud of yourself.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: So Janice's mother in law, Janice's father tells me a
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: rather colorful story. I relate the story, don't put any
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: spin on it, just relate the story. And she gets
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: so mad at me that now she says she won't
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: listen anymore. What all I did was told something that
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: was told to me. Is she mad at your dad? Probably?
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Oh you think so? I don't know, would he? Uh
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: would that upset? Helly? She's actually mad at anybody, But
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: she didn't disapproving. Yeah, but you see the situation that
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: puts me in where I'm just telling a story someone
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: else told me it's like sho to tell shooting the messenger. Okay,
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: you're you're you're clothing and thought about dirt, trying to
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: think why we were talking about this, about what we
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: were all doing? Uh? Is it about getting up to
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: go to school? About getting up earlier or something. Oh,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and yes it was Dirt pipes up with. I had
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: a milk cow every day for school. Sucked. Somebody else
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: has been complaining about having a shovel snow or make
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: oatmeal or something. Just getting up early, and then I
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: couldn't have cocoa blasts. You know. We were getting nostalgia
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: about our mom's and how they would prepare the morning
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: and will always wake us up in the morning. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: that's what I was talking about. Yeah, everybody else is
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: getting more milk, and see Dirt had to just get
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: kicked out of bed to go fill up the cow.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: To myself, you know what, I do not have another
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: pier that I can certainly think up quickly. They can
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: say they as a child, they were milking the cow
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: before they went to school. Everything. Well, my friendly had
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: a milk whole ship, a family business, so it's different.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: We got on rolling cars today and Dirt's like, yeah,
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: my brother wrote car twice. Both times he was racing me.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: Both regretful moments. But so that's all you got. Yeah.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: I just think that that kind of adds for the
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: people that are following along podcasting it like it adds
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: a nice little layer of character to dirt you know
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you kind of you know know where he came from. Um. Yeah,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: to think that it wasn't enough, I didn't know if
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: you know, if you had a little more you needed
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: to get out Corey. I don't think I would ever
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: plan a big mule deer hunt around a big election
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: because I think it took away a little bit from
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: very distracting, very distracting one moment because we were in
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service, no
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: contact with anyone. I think we waited day a day
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: before we found out who was going to be the
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: next day, didn't have the staff phone. We put in
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: the truck because probably wait or room in the raft
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: or something. But we asked some guy in to vote.
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Who won? Now I had that happened during bush Gore,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: where we put off a trip for the election. The
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: next day no one knew and like, well, let's just go. Anyways,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: we went, then did a float trip for four days,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: came out who won? They still don't know another another
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: popular vote winner, loser, popular vote, electoral vote. Yeah, it
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: was it was like it was like so, um, yeah,
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: it's hard to It was an odd it's just the
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: day to camp, like not the delivery was No, it's
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: just weird who states We're not a group of people
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: that that doesn't care. I think all of us, in
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: our own way are politically engaged and very much care
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: about the process and the outcome. And to like Situs
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: sit up and be glassing for for deer was both
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: uh satisfying and disconcerting. Like it's a strange combination of like,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: thank god, I'm not watching the pundits, like give me
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: the play by play. Like at the time, I was like, oh,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: this kind of feels good that I'm like kind of
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: removed from the process. But then once the process was
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: over and I knew people knew, I was like, oh
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: my god, I can't believe I don't know what the
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: outcome is like. And then we we ultimately were interested
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: and we found out via radio, and then there was
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: a lot of disbelief that yeah, so I mean this
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: is my personal like concluding thoughts. But we found out
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: on radio and Steve said Trump won, and uh, I
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: was like, oh, uh are you are you screwing with me?
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: You know, like like everybody in the nation, I think
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: everyone in the whole country, because it had been so,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: but on the pounded into your head that it was impossible.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I'm on radio with with Steve, who was hearing this
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: information via somebody else, you know, And it's like, are
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: you just messing with me? Like and no, But I
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: really all day hoped that I was being messed with
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: a little bit. You were upset. Yeah, I was like,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: I felt ill, but I did. I that cheered you up. Know,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I was happy that I was happy to get the
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: news such in in I felt ill sort of hearing
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: that news, but in a group of people with such
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: diverse political feelings that are all rational and information based,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: and so I feel like there's still a very large
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: uh contingent of America that votes based on feeling, which
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: I respect. But information and facts are really important to me.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: And I think one reason I respect Steve so much
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: and we disagree politically slightly, I think we're on kind
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: of two sides of the same coin. Um. But he's
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: an information based human. It's like, if there's facts that
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: tell him to believe a certain way, uh, he looks
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: at them and it's like, okay, that's I'm gonna engage
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: with those facts, like and uh, and so to be
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: with a group of people that we could discuss the
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: Trump presidency with with UH, with facts and with openness
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: and an understanding that everybody has a different feeling about
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: a lot of different things. It was like a pretty
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: It was a good. It was a good. I think
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: I would have been much less satisfied to watch this
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: all unfold on CNN in my house by myself, because
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: we we get we get pretty compartmentalized in our own
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: little like bubbles. And I think that people are talking
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: about that, but you guys, all, but the bubble. This
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: is becoming a problem. It is definitely becoming a problem.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: But my work with this crew just in general, I'm
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: not a hunter. I have different political beliefs than than UH.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Then I think other people my feelings about yogurt slightly
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: different than the other. But but we can all talk
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: about this and like not get angry at each other.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And I think it's man if if the rest of
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: America had our little deal going on, we wouldn't have
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: such issues. It was interesting, like we're huddled down waiting
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: for that bug stand up, and the whole time Brick
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: and I are just like talking about the election. That
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: was your gluey thought, I loved it. Now I'm gonna
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna build on that um with a couple of
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: thoughts here. Now, I want to preface the saw us
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: by saying that I made a conscious decision, a conscious
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: decision a long time ago that in my public facing comments,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: like in my public facing viewpoints, I was not going
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: to discuss I don't discuss politics. I discuss politics just
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: because just it just pisses to many people off it
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: just it just doesn't feel to me like it's constructive,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: um and larger because I sit on I sit simultaneously
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: on both sides of defense. For instance, I support clean
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: air and clean water and also a robust military and
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: capital punishment. So like, I don't have a lot of
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: use for conservative and liberal because I'm um. I'm an
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: issues person each I look at each issue independently, and
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I don't look toward what is the particular platform of
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: a party, like how can I align myself? Like, oh,
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: since I am conservative, I must have this opinion, or
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: let me go check, let me make a phone call
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: to find out what my opinion is, because all I
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: know is that I'm conservative, So I don't have that
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: approach um. But anyway, I try to avoid politics, except
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: I do talk about politics when it has to do
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: with issues of wildlife conservation, wildlife management, hunting, fishing, how
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: how the political atmosphere is affecting you know, are public lands? Yeah,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: public lands our lives as hunters and fishermen. So that's
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: something uncomfortable talking about. UM. Now I'm gonna do that.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about something that's going on now and
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: the election in terms of something that I am comfortable
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: discussing in politics, which is public lands issue. Now, some
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: of you may have hurt that Donald Trump won the presidency.
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: At this point, right now, this something that doesn't happen
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: very often. At this point, right now, we have one
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: political party. The Republican Party is now UM hold, will
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: will soon hold the presidency, will hold the House of Representatives,
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: will hold the Senate, and will soon hold. I know
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: it's supposed to be it's supposed to be a political,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: but they will soon hold the Supreme Court. If you
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: imagine that, they're like Republicans had there their nominees will
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: have them already in the Supreme Court. Now Here, here's
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: a I'm gonna tell you a fact. The Republican Party
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: UM has a has a list of planks in their platforms.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: So the Republican Party has an agenda and it's not
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: something that needed you need to speculate about. It's it's
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: a written out agenda that the party holds. That they
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: hold that and not all Republicans believe this. But the
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: part of the platform is that we should be getting
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: rid of federal public lands. This isn't like I'm not
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: telling you like a theory. This is a thing you
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: I invite you to go check. The Republican National Committee
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: came out with like a like a prioritized list, honest list,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: as we need to be dumping federal public lands for
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: sale for get them out of Yeah, I don't. I
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: don't even see. Here's the thing is, I don't want
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: to get into I'm trying not to spin any of this.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I have fearies about why that is okay, But I'm
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: just trying to lay out I'm trying to at this
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: point because I'm so uncomfortable disgusting aspects of politics, because
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: I'm such a mess politically that I'm trying to just
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: lay out like I'm trying to lay out factual things. Yeah.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: So that's that's it's on the Republican agenda dumping federal
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: public lands, and usually we have this. You know, we
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: have a system of checks and balances in this country.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: Obviously that that exists between the Supreme Court, the President,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: House and Senate. UM. And we also have a different
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: sort of checks and balances which comes about where we
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: have two political parties that that um are on different
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: sides of the aisland. They kind of battleship out all
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: the time and that and that allows things to move slowly.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: And I tend to like people complain about gridlock. But
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I'll tell you this about my own personal political feelings
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: is I don't always look at gridlock as being necessarily
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: evil because, um, when things happen kind of slow and
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: in a measured way, I feel that it lends a
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: little bit of stability to our political lives, our social lives,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: our economy and um and in radical herky jerky ship
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: kind of makes me uneasy. Uh So, all these differents
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: so so so so much of the government now is
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: controlled by a single political party, and that political party
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: thinks we should be dumping the federal lands that we
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: hunt and fish on. This is complicated. There's an upside
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: of this when you think that that Trump isn't really
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: He's a Republican by name only, he's not really Republican. Um.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: If we look at like a Republican as being like
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: what the Republican Party has stood for for the last
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: fifty years, For instance, the Republican Party has generally always
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: stood for free trade. Um. Trump' sees a lot of
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: value and protectionism. Okay, so he's at odds with his
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: party and that he has one view of he has
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: one of you that like free trade. There's some good
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: parts to it. For free trade has also cost us
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: a lot of manufacturing jobs and our things and allowed
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: you know, cheap imports be dumped into our economy and
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: throw our economy off. So he departs from the party
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: line on free trade. Um. The Republican Party is always
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: stood for promoted a very slippery urn, but like traditional
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: family values. UM. I think if you look at Trump's
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: personal life some of his articulated opinions, I don't think
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: that he really ascribes to what we might call like
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: traditional family values. So he kind of parts from that.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: They're very conservative traditional family yeah, any religious conception of Now,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: Republicans have generally over the years stood for UM. Containment
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: of the Soviet Union, which trade transitioned into a containment
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: of Russia. Trump is open to finding common ground with
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: Russian and finding ways in which we might work with
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: Russian instead of in opposition to them. I'm rick, don't
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: shake your head. I'm trying to lay out unbiased, just
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: things that the man has said. I'm agreeing with you.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: I just freaking it makes it makes no hurt because
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: we're not talking about politics right now. I'm setting up
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: something that I want to talk about experience. You're right,
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: You're right, Okay, No, I'm agreeing with you, but I
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: just my brain explodes thinking about Trump. No, please, Rick, stop,
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna cut. I'm gonna have you unplug his thing.
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: Your brain explodes to we're not talking about politics. I'm
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: laying some ground his thing, Trump diverging from the Republican Party,
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: which is the thing that is like no one would
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: disagree with it. I agree and it um, Ricky got
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: me all messed up. I'm trying to do something, something
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: very delicate. I think you're doing. Thursday, January one, two
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: thousand sixteen, I was sitting in Nevada, about forty yards
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: away from Donald Trump when he said, What did he say, Honest,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: you were sitting right next to me. What did he
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: say about public lands? He wasn't gonna sell him off,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: not interested in get rid of public lands. I am
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: not gonna get rid of your public lands. Did you
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: hear him? He said it to me and Yanni and
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: hundreds of other people. I heard him with my own
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: two ears and saw with his own two eyes say it. Now.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: The man is gonna be under intense pressure to uphold
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: at once a number of campaign promises that he has made.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Some of them have been described as outlandished. Whatever I
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: don't I don't get that right now, He's gonna be
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: under intense pressure. And he's also gonna be under intense
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: pressure to align with Republican orthodoxy on all things. And
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: I do, Like I said, I do agree with the
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Republican Party and many things. I part ways with them
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: on the issue of federal public lands. I think that
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: people who like to hunt, and who like to fish,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: and who like to camp and write a t V
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: s and enjoy wildlife. What else am I missing? Mountain bikers, skiers, hikers,
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: those of us those Americans who recreate and and spend
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: their time and spend their money and find their passion
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: on public lands. Donald Trump's sons, you need to just
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: you need to and not you need to to to say. Listen, Stephen,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Yanni heard you say that. Yep, stay true to that, please,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: because entering into a realm where things get turned upside
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: down and people's attentions get abandoned and you make all
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: kinds of compromises, I just hope. And where do we
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: hunt out week? Public land? Yeah? Public land? I mean now,
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: I don't want here's the air thing. I don't want
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: to act like the public landage. We have people, you know,
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: a lot of things. We have a lot of people
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: who are concerned with issues like their job. We have
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: people who concerned with issues like civil liberties. All Americans
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: have big issues. And I don't want to hold up
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: the public lands issues being the number one problem facing
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: the country. But because I prefaced this whole thing by
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: saying that there's an aspect of politics I'm comfortable talking
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: about because I really know it well, and that is
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: issues surrounding wildlife management, land use. Like I I stay
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: boned up on that stuff. Me too, And and we
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: could not have done our entire week, could not have
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: existed without public lands. And he stood there in front
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: of me and Janni and staid. I will not sell
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: your public lands. Not interesting, get rid of you public lands. Uh, Brody,
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: what's your thought? Don't talk about politics now, that's all Rick.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: I swear to God you already did your thing. I
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: love you and respect you. I'm not going to talk
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: about politics or rick Um, I agree with you. I
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: guess I'd like to talk about mule deer. I kind
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: of want to talk about beavers, but we didn't get there.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Oh please please talk about beavers. Well, I got my
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: first beaver right before the hunt. Tell them about Colorado's
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: rule on beavers no trapping. I don't know, what's just bullshit?
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: Well they're trying to outlaud it. Well did that get
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: what happened with that? Got destroyed? Montana? So Montana had
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: I was I won seven seven? Or they had some
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: initiative you put up you couldn't trap on public land anymore,
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: or that didn't go over real Well, sixty percent of
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: the boat against that initiative. Well, look at a state
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: like I feel like it could happen in Montana if
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: it just got destroyed. I know, but I'm saying, if
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: Montana becomes more it's more gentrified. Yeah. The minute Colorado
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: had its population living and the front und Yeah, they
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: got trapped. Right, So it's like that's what I was saying.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: We live in this weird time. On one hand, we
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: have people trying to get rid of our public lands,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: and then we have this other group of people from
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: you know, presumably from very much across the aisle from
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: that group, trying to lock out an entire segment group
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: who's been using a sustainable, renewable resource based on the
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: idea there are hundreds of years, for longer than it's
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: even been a damn state. Yeah, but no one was,
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: No one can Those people can't wrap their head around
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: an animal dying in a trap, right, No, they can
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: just wrap their heads around the scores of animal deaths
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: that they encounter every week on highways, on their on
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: their plate. Yeah, like when they get a chicken nuggets?
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: How many damn chickens? How many damn chickens earned one chicken?
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Any one? But either way, I Colorado outlawed trapping. Yeah,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: fifteen twenty years ago. I don't know how based on
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: a voter referendum, much like they voted out spring bear hunting,
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: hunting bears with dogs hunting. But either way, someone was
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: smart enough to say, well, if you can't trap him,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: then you can hunt him on a small game license.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: And I shot a beaver on a small game license
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: ten days ago, right before this hunt, and uh, with
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: Steve's guidance, skinned it made a nice little round thing.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: And now I'm gonna have either or around by by
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: which he means he round skinned skinned it yea. And
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: I'm either going to do mitts or a trooper hat.
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: I'm not sure yet, but he's gonna use that. He's
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: gonna use the services of Clifford's Critter Creators. Who does
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: anyone looking to have custom work done with your own
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: first ice trapped stuff and not trapped stuff. We just
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: have hats and stuff made for it. And my brother
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: last beaver we got, he had a nice hat made
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: for his wife. But we were hoping on the float
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: portion of this hunt that we'd run into a beaver.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: It just didn't happen. Yeah, when you look at when
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: what Colorado did when they had the referend of the
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: band Trapp and Colorado, I didn't notice Still Brody tell
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: me they just moved all the fur bears over round
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: of the small game list, and so this is like
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: the only state that I've ever did I know about.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: You can hunt beavers with two That's the only way,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: I mean, basically the only way to get a beaver. Now,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: there's like a certain irony there where someone telling me
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: if you look at like when when California band lion hunting,
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: you look like what the annual harvest was of lions
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: in California. I could be completely wrong, but I feel
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: like it was somewhere in the vicinity of like three
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: year annual harvest California. Now you look at what Animal
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Control services guess how many lions Animal Control Services kills.
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: Ever you're in California, that many. In Colorado, they outlawed
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: spring bear hunting, dog hunting, bait hunting, and I'm not
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: at all a big fan of bait hunting for bears,
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: but the last time they had done well, do you
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: mean that you don't have any desire to do it?
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: I should be able to do it. No people can
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: do it. It's just not something that it's like when
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: I look, I like, I love to hunt bears, but
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: it's just like I like to hunt bears spot stock,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: but it doesn't mean that that's not any kind of
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: comment on how all the people like the hunt them.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: But either way, Colorado, the last time they did a
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: major population study on black bears, it was some time
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: around the time they banned that stuff, and there was
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: X number of bears. They recently did a study twenty
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: years later, fifteen years later since that's that that type
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: of hunting had been banned, and found out the population
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: of black bears in Colorado had essentially doubled. And now
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: the only way to control that population is a fairly
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: difficult fall bear hunting season. But we just talked to
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: biologists who said they're fixing to start doing some state
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: sponsored bear control. Right, so you remove you make it
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: the people, the paying customer, the license buying customer who's
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: gonna go out and buy a license and supports fishing
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: game and then do a bear hunt, get a bear,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: have the meat, have the hide. It's like, oh, no,
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: it's better if we just have government guys snipe them. Yeah,
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: that's that's that's that's the solution. I mean, I would
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I would be such a huge fan of a spring
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: bear season and not what I don't need dogs. I
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: don't need bait. I would love to be able to
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: go do a spot in stock hunt like Montana has
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: in the spring. Yeah, and you can't bait Montana and
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: you can't run dogs Montana. But it's not coming from
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: the place that when people are trying to ban the practices.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: It's like traditional use patterns that when you look at
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: when I look at hunting, um and fishing in the
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: regular and the regulatory structures that we have, I give
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: a lot And I didn't invent this. It's a it's
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: a it's a common idea, but I give a lot
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: of credence to traditional use patterns. So what are the
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: things that that people have traditionally done here? And it
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: gives you a good framework to understand new things. For instance,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: so many states are getting out ahead of the drone situation,
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: and it's so easy to ban drones now for the
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: use of hunting, and thirteen states almost every state where
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: you'd even have where you have open enough country that
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: would even western hunting states have all banned the use
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: of drones, and honey, why was it easy to do that?
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: It's not a traditional use practice. There's no resistance. In fact,
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: hunters are the most vocal proponents of getting out ahead
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: of the drone situation, of banning the use of drones
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: and hunting. So there is like a real there's a
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: reverence towards traditional use practices. And when we're go in
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: and say, like when we're going inside to try to
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: pluck out traditional use practices that we've already formed a
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: successful wildlife management system in conjunction with you're gonna hit
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: a lot of resistance from hunters and fishermen. Yeah, but
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: when you turn that decision over to people who have
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: no connection to hunting and fishing, then a traditional youth
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: pattern can be just yanked out of existence. Basically, people
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: who are like, you know, I wouldn't know a lion
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: if it was chewing on my foot a fella day.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: I'm sure you shouldn't be able to hunt him, right.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: Oh you know what we glassed up tonight? Keep you
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: gonna talk about this? We glassed up at Ermine. Oh really? Yeah?
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Pure white, pure white already, that's what makes ermine. You
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: know we normally normally there's snow this time here, and
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: that dude doesn't know there's this dude better watches he's
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: gonna get nailed by Yeah, Yeah, because he just looks
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: like you can't miss him. Man, it looks like a
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: piece of paper blowing along across the climate change faster
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: than faster that they can figure it out. He's like
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: a little white hot dog just running across the stage.
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: You say he glassed up another one the other day. Yeah,
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: think we're on the river glass one to tell anybody
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: about it. Fierce. Those guys are fierce, man. Yeah, they'll
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: kill a jack rabbit. Yeah, we had one hanging out
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: in our yard last year. Man, But you're concluding thought,
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: I kind of hijacked your concluding talk that that was.
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: That was basically it, other than you know, thanks to
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Rick and Garrett for just hanging tough with me the
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: last few days. Rick lets those midnight not midnight. He
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: likes those late night, um midnight, he says. He says,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: he enjoys it. You know, actually, I really part of
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: me does not like them. Especially early on when I
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: started doing this. It's like, Stark, we should go home now. Yeah, now,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: now I'm like, oh, this is awesome. We don't know,
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: we don't know where we're going. There's probably some clips
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: were getting encounter and everybody's head lamps are gonna be
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: terrible except mine. So they're gonna be like, rick, hey,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: come on here, like it counts the best one. And
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: I think somebody somebody's phrase that what was it brody?
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: Something about the path at least, like the path of
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: least resistance is often the hardest way to go. I
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: think that's a really really good metaphor for life. Like
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: you think, oh, drainage, we don't have to climb any
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: hills until you get yeah, until you get like a
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: thirty waterfall and you're just stuck there and you're like, huh,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: some efforts. So there is this sense that there's no
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: there's no free lunch. You gotta put in, you gotta
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: put in your time, you gotta put in your effort.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: I'm just gonna go down that hill, that drainage. I
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: was not caught by surprise by all those No, I've
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: walked down the note but many times. But I do
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: like your optimism of like, oh, yeah, let's pass backpacks
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: down this little short waterfall, hop that we can all
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: climb down, and then you're like, oh, this next one
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: is good, and then you look at it you started
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: climbing down, and you know, Okay, maybe maybe I got
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: a little ahead of myself. We made it out fine. Yeah, um,
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: dirt life skilled when you're sweating outside seeing country well
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: for this man is a poet, Harry Poet. I wish
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: we had a website to post that Starbucks photo. Can
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: we we put it on the me and dirt, myouth
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: and Starbucks sweating. Not that that wasn't enough, but you
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: feel satisfied it ran. Maybe after that picture my dad
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: will want to hit up a Starbucks for the first
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: time he's dead. Who will point out that he believes
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: he's laughing and he is by descent an American born man.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: Try to tell me that he has never ever had
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: a Starbucks coffee folders man or what is not even
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: that he's tried to avoid it. He just says that
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: it's just never happened. I don't know if that's really possible.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: I feel like you'll say to you something dude, like,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: oh hey, keep grabbing me a coffee, and they'll be
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: that kind. The thing is is that my dad's not
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: He hasn't ever been much of a coffee drinker. And
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: I think that the way that we consume coffee, like
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: our generation, how often we're like, get me a coffee.
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Let's go on the coffee shop like my dad, Like
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: he would look at that and be like, that's seven
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: hundred fifty dollars annually that I can instead be putting
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: here like you're an idiot for going to spend that
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: kind of money on cups of coffee and white you know, cuffs.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: And in a way, he's right, So I think that's
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: kind of how he's gotten out of it. It's do
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: you believe when he says that he's damn sure had something? Now?
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: Those fias, that's something we should discuss sometimes. How via
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: is the way to go for backpack coffee? Where did
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: you do one? Did you get a concluder? Yeh yeah,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: I had the whole. I gotta joint. I got a
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: Chart'll check back in. I want to find a word
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: or a phrase to explain this. This this is this
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: little bit. You can come up with it when you
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: know when you try to like gauge someone's judgment, right,
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: so you get to know someone you're trying to figure
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: out in over time you're like, yeah, this is like
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: a very reliable figure. I have a problem, not only
- 1:52:46Speaker 1: one in this room, but I have a thing that
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: I've identified over the years where what when someone's opinion,
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: it's always that that you should that you look at
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: it like always the easy thing, but they never say,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: like it to be easier too, but they always have
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: a different reason. But then when you look you go like, oh,
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: but your reason is easier. And over time you realize
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: that every time issue comes up, they have the easy idea,
- 1:53:15Speaker 1: but they never want to do it because it's easy.
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: They always tried to sell you on it with a
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: different explanation. It's like a rationalization of of something with
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: some other ulterior motives. So you're like, hey, let's go
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: up there and look for a buck, and they're like, man,
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: I think we should go down there. And the next
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: day you're like, um, hey, let's let's uh pick up
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: these big, huge rocks and throw them and they're like,
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: let's uh, I'll sick. We pick up these little rocks
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: and throw them further because and over you go like, man,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: every time this guy has ever had a suggestion, it's
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: always happened to be easier. I would say that's the
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: problem of modernity right there. Yeah, I want you to
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: think about it and think about and think of a
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: way to describe people just don't want to work hard.
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: I want something more like um, like a like a
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: specific psychological I'll give you a little starter, all right,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: then we're done. This eco feminist Val Plumwood writes about
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: that just an eco feminist does Oh is that a
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: guy or a girl? Girl? I was gonna say, you
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: can't be a bro eco feminist. Yeah I am. You
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: know that. The next
