- 0:07Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast.

- 0:30or on our website at watwm.org,
- 0:34we invite you to sit down with us as we open the scriptures to learn more about
- 0:39who God is and to strengthen your daily walk.
- 1:03In this episode of the Woman at the Well Ministries podcast,
- 1:06join Kim Miller and Erica Close in a conversation as we walk with Jesus.
- 1:11In today's conversation, we're chatting about what life looks like when we choose
- 1:16to move on from the places where we have camped out, because God has something better.
- 1:22Well, thank you all for joining us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries.
- 1:26I am Erica Close, and I am here with Kim Miller.
- 1:29Hello, and thank you so much for joining us in this.
- 1:33We are excited that you are with us today. And these podcasts are some of my
- 1:39absolute favorites because it gives us an opportunity
- 1:42to go a little bit deeper into the application from whatever it is that we learned
- 1:48in the previous podcast.
- 1:50So if you are listening to today's podcast, then you most likely listened to
- 1:55Monday's podcast, which was episode 654.
- 1:59And it was entitled, Will Thou Be Made Whole?
- 2:04And as we start today's podcast and we start our discussion,
- 2:09there's just one question that I want to ask you, and that is,
- 2:14where are you camping out?
- 2:17And I believe that that question will make some sense as we move further into our discussion.
- 2:23But before we move any further, I want to read a passage. So this passage was
- 2:28included in Monday's podcast, but I want to read it again.
- 2:33So that we're all on the same page. So we are in John chapter 5,
- 2:38and I'm going to be reading verses 2 through 9.
- 2:41Now there is a Jerusalem by the sheep market, a pool, which is called in the
- 2:46Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
- 2:50In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt,
- 2:55withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
- 2:58For an angel went down at a certain seasoned into the pool and troubled the water.
- 3:02Whosoever then, first, after the troubling of the water, stepped in,
- 3:08was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
- 3:11And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
- 3:18When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case,
- 3:24he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
- 3:29The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man when the water is troubled
- 3:34to put me into the pool, but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
- 3:39Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
- 3:45And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked.
- 3:51And on the same day was the Sabbath.
- 3:55I absolutely love that passage. And I have to say that after listening to Monday's
- 4:00podcast, I love that passage even more.
- 4:06So in Monday's podcast, you talked about the parallel between the Pool of Bethesda,
- 4:14and the man that was there waiting to be able to get down to the water for healing.
- 4:21And these places in our lives where we have just gotten stuck,
- 4:29where we are camping out, places that the Lord intends to be places of transition,
- 4:35where we have just gotten stuck,
- 4:36but we have gone stuck and we're there.
- 4:41And so back to my first question, where are you camping out?
- 4:45The follow-up question to that is, what is your pool of Bethesda?
- 4:51And as our listeners are thinking about that, let's talk for a minute about
- 4:56how we figure out what our pool of Bethesda is.
- 5:02If the Lord's asking us right now, What is your pool of Bethesda?
- 5:07I think it's the place we keep ourselves where there's no joy.
- 5:11That's a really good answer. In the presence of the Lord, there are pleasures and joy forevermore.
- 5:20And we may not always start out wanting to do the tasks that God has laid before us.
- 5:29But when we are in the throes of doing it and we're full throttle faith and trust.
- 5:37We're good with it. We feel his presence. Which is what gives us the joy.
- 5:43And there's no place you want to be besides the center of God's will and you just know it.
- 5:48But when you're doing things that even look right and your friends and family
- 5:53and coworkers or anybody else
- 5:55would say, Oh, that's great. You're doing a wonderful thing for the Lord.
- 5:59And you feel like something's missing.
- 6:02Not that you're not getting glory, not that your pride's swelling up.
- 6:07It's just, something's not missing.
- 6:09Something's off. Because when you're in the center of God's will,
- 6:14there's nothing like it.
- 6:16And I think we know when we are, and I think we know when we're not.
- 6:23And a good indicator is the level of true joy in your life.
- 6:28I'd like us to just think about that for a minute, because I think that's really, really important.
- 6:33And I loved that you used joy as the measure,
- 6:38because we often talk about how the Lord gets us as partners in ministry,
- 6:46partners in crime, into what we call scrapes.
- 6:49The Lord just gets us into scrapes sometimes.
- 6:53Which is serving Christ regularly attracts personal emergency situations.
- 6:59Which is really other people's personal emergency situations.
- 7:02They become ours. Because you're called to help somebody.
- 7:05And, you know, if we were to sit down with you, Lister, and tell you some of
- 7:11the stories that the Lord has gotten us into, sometimes you just wouldn't even
- 7:15believe it. I don't even believe some of these things happened and we were there.
- 7:19But I think what's important is that there are some of those scrapes that were
- 7:27hard, right? They were hard.
- 7:31I mean, literally, they were messy. They were dirty.
- 7:36They were scary. And I didn't have a clue.
- 7:39They were ugly situations. We didn't know what to do, but we somehow did it.
- 7:45And there was joy in it because you 100% knew you'd gotten it right,
- 7:55that you're where the Lord wanted you to be.
- 7:57And there's no joy like that.
- 8:03And one of the reasons why I use joy is because when I was growing up,
- 8:07everybody spoke of joy as Jesus first, others second, yourself last.
- 8:14And when he is calling you to your pool of Bethesda to lay down something to be washed away from you,
- 8:26It's usually something you want. Right. Because you're.
- 8:29And you can't imagine how anything else would be better or right.
- 8:35Or maybe it's just you're comfortable. You've normalized it. It's easy.
- 8:40You've normalized it. You've normalized. Even if there's some aspect of it that's not maybe 100% right.
- 8:48For whatever reason. Maybe it's just not even right for you.
- 8:51It might not be wrong. It's not going to be a right thing for you.
- 8:53But you've figured out how to do it and you're okay.
- 8:55Yeah, and you've normalized it. And you've just said, this is okay.
- 8:58This isn't bad. So this must be okay. It must be good. It must be what the Lord,
- 9:02wants. And I think it becomes something we're comfortable with. You brought that up.
- 9:07And comfort is never a trampoline or trajectory to faith and trust.
- 9:15Because if you're comfortable, you don't have to trust. I've always said he
- 9:19never let me do anything I was really good at. Right.
- 9:23Right. Because I would be inserting my own ideas. Yeah. Comfort isn't a trail.
- 9:27When you just said trampoline, like big trampolines that launch you are not
- 9:32comfortable. Little trampolines like those rebounder things that people jump
- 9:35up and down on in their living rooms.
- 9:37Right. That's a comfortable trampoline. A real trampoline. None of them are
- 9:40on my knees. But a real trampoline that would launch you into somewhere really,
- 9:45isn't that comfortable.
- 9:47You know, you made a statement in Monday's podcast where you talked about those
- 9:53places where we are as appointments.
- 9:57You know, like we have an appointment. God has us somewhere for a specific reason.
- 10:02And it's an appointment because if it's his plan for us, it's an appointment
- 10:06with him, right? We're supposed to be somewhere for that time.
- 10:12I believe that with all of my heart. And it's just, the question is,
- 10:17How long are we supposed to be at that appointment?
- 10:20And what happens is we get comfortable at the appointment, so we're not looking for him.
- 10:26And so we just stay there because we're not listening, because we're not looking
- 10:32for his information, because we're comfortable.
- 10:35In Ecclesiastes chapter 3, in verse 1, he says, To everything there is a season.
- 10:42And a time to every purpose under the heaven.
- 10:44I think we think it's one and done, or I found my niche, I found what I like.
- 10:52But he didn't say to everything, there is a place.
- 11:01He says there is a season.
- 11:06And seasons change, but seasons transition and transform the natural landscape through the transition.
- 11:19Because they cannot be in December.
- 11:24What they are in May. Just watch nature. It'll tell you there is a season.
- 11:31You know, when you talk about those seasons, and I think to this idea of camping
- 11:37out in a place longer than we're supposed to be there, you know,
- 11:42it makes me think, you know, what is the thing you're trying to hold on to?
- 11:45Like, we try to hold on to seasons. Sometimes. I do.
- 11:49I want summer to be forever. Right, right. You're not happy when it's time to
- 11:54go into like, you know, jeans and boots and flannels.
- 11:58That is not your season. I do not own flannels. Okay.
- 12:02Not that there's anything wrong with them. I don't want people.
- 12:05I don't. You don't own flannel. And it is not your season of choice.
- 12:09You are a warm weather summer person.
- 12:12I love snow.
- 12:15I love fall clothes. I love fall colors. You love flannel. I love flannel.
- 12:21I love needing to put on a coat.
- 12:25I love all those things. And so you may hold on to summer.
- 12:34I often want to hold on to winter or at least spring. I don't love the heat.
- 12:40And so sometimes in our lives there are seasons when we've been there for our appointed time.
- 12:49And then it's time for us to move on because the Lord has told us to and we just won't let go.
- 12:59And we get a little confused with our plans and his plans.
- 13:04And we think, well, if I'm comfortable, that must have been his plan.
- 13:08I've learned in my lifetime, if I'm comfortable, I need to recheck Absolutely.
- 13:14You know, so many times when we stick too long in a place beyond the time that
- 13:22God has appointed for us to be there, it becomes a negative situation.
- 13:29And we often don't see it because we're comfortable, right? We often don't see it.
- 13:35We're not looking. We're not looking. And because it might be easy for us because
- 13:38we know what to do in that situation.
- 13:39When you're comfortable, you're not looking. You lose your vigilance.
- 13:44And he says, be vigilant, be sober, because your adversary, the devil,
- 13:47walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
- 13:51And sometimes he uses, you know, distractions.
- 13:55Sometimes he uses, you know, we are doing something out of our plan and our
- 14:00agenda instead of his, and it may even be the results may even be there,
- 14:04but we know we're not the ones supposed to be doing it.
- 14:08You made it you made a question on monday you said how are you decorating
- 14:13your pit of negativity and you were talking about how when we're in those times
- 14:17when we're supposed to be moving past something and we're still there because we're comfortable,
- 14:23but it becomes a negative situation because it's not where we're supposed to be,
- 14:28we somehow in our own strength right are trying to make that situation okay.
- 14:34We're literally like decorating a pit.
- 14:37We're decorating and making a home in a place that is not supposed to be our
- 14:41home. We're making something tolerable that was never meant to be.
- 14:45Right, right. And these are hard questions.
- 14:50I firmly believe that all of us that are.
- 14:53Listening right now can think of places and times, and we may be in one right
- 14:59now, where we know the Lord is moving, and for whatever reason,
- 15:05we may be hesitant to make that move,
- 15:07or we may just not be recognizing.
- 15:10Maybe we don't realize the Lord is calling us to move.
- 15:13Because we're not looking, and we need to be looking.
- 15:18You know, one of the reasons I think that we often aren't looking is that,
- 15:23to quote you from Monday's message, we're not willing to take on the pain of change.
- 15:30I heard myself say that and it startled me because I'm anti-change.
- 15:36You don't like change. I'm very resistant to change. And I thought,
- 15:40oh, my, what's on the horizon?
- 15:43Well, it's interesting because, as I say, you don't like change.
- 15:47You know there are I like change I love to rearrange furniture I love I love
- 15:53to you know paint a wall I love change I love that,
- 15:58kind of change but we can I can be very honest and say that there are aspects of my life,
- 16:06that I don't like change and if I know that a change I need to make is going to be,
- 16:12difficult for someone else, right?
- 16:15I'm such a people pleaser, and I know that.
- 16:18And if I know that I am supposed to be making a change and it's hard on other
- 16:24people, I might be hesitant to make the change.
- 16:27But there is often pain in change, but that doesn't... Because there's pain in growth.
- 16:34Right. Growing pains, literally. Yes.
- 16:37And just because there's pain doesn't mean you're not supposed to do it.
- 16:39And change orchestrated by God will always lead you forward and up.
- 16:44It's gross. And when you make the change, you'll have the joy.
- 16:49And you'll be equipped to make it, but you're not immune to the sting. No.
- 16:54But even when it stings, when you know you've done exactly what you were supposed
- 16:59to do, there is a point of joy in there that is unlike anything else.
- 17:05I think Jesus really showed about transformation.
- 17:11Transition, and change, and how there is suffering when the world went from
- 17:18hopeless to full of hope when he said it is finished.
- 17:24And he said, Lord, forgive them for they know not what they've done.
- 17:28It's painful, but it produces far greater benefits than the pain of the suffering.
- 17:37I'm going to go back to the questions that I asked at the beginning of this
- 17:42podcast. Where are you camping out?
- 17:45And what is your pool of Bethesda? Just like the man that was laying at the
- 17:51pool of Bethesda made excuses. I don't have anybody to take me down.
- 17:56People step over me. They get in front of me.
- 17:59What are the excuses that you're making? because you're not yet moving in the
- 18:05direction that God has called you to move?
- 18:10Those are hard, hard questions.
- 18:13And the last question that I want to ask is the question that points to the
- 18:20joy, which is what is the transformation that he has for you?
- 18:26When God is calling us from something, He's always calling us to something better.
- 18:33He's calling us through a point of transition to a place of transformation.
- 18:41Praise Jesus. And he's always going to bring the joy.
- 18:47I'm going to say it again. There is no better joy than knowing that you heard
- 18:53him right and you followed him and did what he asked you to do.
- 19:01So friends, I'm just going to say, what's the transformation that he has for
- 19:04you? What is your pool of Bethesda?
- 19:08And what is he asking you to rise up from and walk?
