- 0:00SPEAKER_02: It's episode 43 of the Pat McGann Show.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Today, Pat welcomes Olympic gold medalist of the U.S.
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: women's hockey team, Abby Murphy, along with Dwayne Kennedy, with a special report on the World Cup from Marcelo Balboa.
- 0:11SPEAKER_02: The Pat McGann Show, as always, is brought to you by Tee Chanley, a complicated skincare for men.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: And now, here's Pat.
- 0:17SPEAKER_04: Alright, very excited to be joined by Marcelo Balboa.
- 0:21SPEAKER_04: Marcelo, you're a busy man, correspondent for the World Cup.
- 0:25SPEAKER_04: You're working with CBS.
- 0:27SPEAKER_04: I love that your time for us.
- 0:28SPEAKER_07: What's going on, Pat?
- 0:30SPEAKER_07: Uh, just a little quick update.
- 0:32SPEAKER_07: Let's see.
- 0:33SPEAKER_07: The US, and I gotta be honest, this full circle.
- 0:37SPEAKER_07: When we got to the stadium, 76,000 people um waiting for the US to come out.
- 0:46SPEAKER_07: Uh the stadium erupted when the US walked out.
- 0:52SPEAKER_07: And I think they felt the energy.
- 0:54SPEAKER_07: Because to be honest with you, that's probably the best performance.
- 0:58SPEAKER_07: The best, yeah, I'll go best performance I've seen in a while from them.
- 1:03SPEAKER_07: Uh place was electric, screaming.
- 1:06SPEAKER_07: People were celebrating.
- 1:07SPEAKER_07: You know, when you win 4-1 and you take three points in the opening game is exactly the way you want to start.
- 1:12SPEAKER_07: They got plus three, they're in first in the group.
- 1:16SPEAKER_07: Um, and I gotta be honest, uh Mulligan played absolutely fantastic.
- 1:21SPEAKER_07: Two great goals.
- 1:22SPEAKER_07: One was taken away because he was offside, he could have had three.
- 1:26SPEAKER_07: Um, just was just reading the game well.
- 1:29SPEAKER_07: He was moving well, he was finishing, absolutely fantastic.
- 1:32SPEAKER_07: Took Paraguay completely out of their game.
- 1:35SPEAKER_07: They never felt comfortable.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: We never saw them get into a flow.
- 1:39SPEAKER_07: When you take out their best player, Almarón, who they couldn't even find.
- 1:43SPEAKER_07: In Sinho, they couldn't even find the U.S.
- 1:47SPEAKER_07: just pressed them and pressed them and re-pressed them until they were uncomfortable.
- 1:52SPEAKER_07: Um, yeah, they got to go back to make it three to one.
- 1:55SPEAKER_07: But then, you know, when you bring in subs, they're supposed to make a difference.
- 1:58SPEAKER_07: Gio comes into the game and scores a wonderful goal with the outside of his foot, bending it around the keeper to make it four to one.
- 2:06SPEAKER_07: But um, yeah, that's probably the best performance I've seen this team uh over the last year.
- 2:15SPEAKER_07: Uh I mean, running, pressing, energy all over the place, slide tackling people, being aggressive, fouling at the right time.
- 2:24SPEAKER_07: Um, subs were made perfectly to give guys a chance.
- 2:28SPEAKER_07: Uh, the only problem was that Christian came out at halftime, Politic.
- 2:32SPEAKER_07: Um, they're talking about maybe a calf injury.
- 2:35SPEAKER_07: I watched a report today.
- 2:38SPEAKER_07: He is training off to the side, not with the group.
- 2:40SPEAKER_07: He's off to the side, and he's training with the trainer doing some work.
- 2:44SPEAKER_07: So looking at the video today, I can't see there being an issue uh for him on Friday.
- 2:52SPEAKER_07: But uh either way, uh, you know, it's nice to have him back uh if he can play, and if he can, then you just have to slip in a Gio Reyna or somebody in that in that position that uh you slip in uh Sebastian Berthalter in the back, and you can push uh you can push Tillman forward a little bit.
- 3:10SPEAKER_07: So I don't think there's gonna be too much of an issue in that situation.
- 3:16SPEAKER_07: Uh Australia, what can I say?
- 3:19SPEAKER_07: I think they surprised a lot of people playing against Turkey, winning 2-0.
- 3:24SPEAKER_07: Uh, defended very well.
- 3:25SPEAKER_07: They were winning all aerial battles, they were tackling on the ground, they were blocking shots.
- 3:31SPEAKER_07: This is a team that basically you played a 5-4-1, they played a low block, they defended, they cleared balls, they hit you very, very good on transition into counterattacks, with especially with the two players.
- 3:46SPEAKER_07: I believe his name is uh Tore and Ira Kunde.
- 3:50SPEAKER_07: Ira Kunde is the guy that scored the goal, took off on a breakaway on a counterattack.
- 3:55SPEAKER_07: So they could cause a little bit of problem in the back, but I think with the back line, how they've been playing, especially with uh Chris Richards back, and also uh Alex Freeman had a great game, Tim Ream.
- 4:09SPEAKER_07: So I think that the U.S.
- 4:10SPEAKER_07: will be ready for this game.
- 4:13SPEAKER_07: Um, a few other notes on the side.
- 4:15SPEAKER_07: Uh FIFA mandated a three-minute hydration break at the 22nd minute.
- 4:21SPEAKER_07: So it's basically turned into four quarters, Americanized a little bit.
- 4:26SPEAKER_07: Um being not a big fan.
- 4:28SPEAKER_07: I'll be honest with you, not a big fan only because um I'm a purist.
- 4:33SPEAKER_07: The game was built, it's got a flow, it's got a rhythm, and now in 22 minutes, you've got to stop that flow.
- 4:41SPEAKER_07: You take a three-minute hydration break and you come back.
- 4:43SPEAKER_07: If it's needed, if it's over 90 degrees, you know, I get it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_07: I get it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_07: Been there, done that.
- 4:48SPEAKER_07: We didn't have hydration breaks back in the old days.
- 4:51SPEAKER_07: We played in 95, 98 uh uh degrees, but uh they're doing a hydration break.
- 4:57SPEAKER_07: I was watching uh Van Dijk, the Dutch uh center back, and he even said today that he didn't like it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_07: He said that uh he's watched football for a long time, but he doesn't think there's a need for it, especially if it's not mandated, you know, by the the the weather outside of it's not more than 90 degrees, there shouldn't be a break, and I'm gonna have to agree with him.
- 5:23SPEAKER_07: I I'm a purist, I like the game, it's got ebbs and flows in in 45 minutes, but it shouldn't be stopped for three minutes, so you can go get hydration, you can get some water.
- 5:34SPEAKER_07: Coaches can do move things tactically.
- 5:37SPEAKER_07: It's it's almost to the point where it's just you know, it's it's not what we do in our sport, it's not our sport.
- 5:43SPEAKER_07: And uh, but it's good to see that other players are out there and are starting to comment a little bit on the fact that they're not big fans of that.
- 5:54SPEAKER_07: It is Americanized because we are we are going basically it's four quarters, you know what I mean, but not uh not a fan of that.
- 6:02SPEAKER_07: So um surprised Brazil, Morocco 1-1.
- 6:07SPEAKER_07: I think people were very surprised uh that Brazil didn't have a very good game.
- 6:12SPEAKER_07: We thought they would control the game and dominate a lot of people did, but uh, I gotta be honest with you, Morocco was fantastic, moved the ball around, they knocked it around, they controlled the midfield.
- 6:21SPEAKER_07: This is a team that uh that you you gotta be careful a little bit.
- 6:25SPEAKER_07: They're they're very good.
- 6:28SPEAKER_07: Um so we'll see what happens.
- 6:30SPEAKER_07: They reach the semifinal uh last World Cup.
- 6:33SPEAKER_07: Um they're expected to to have a similar kind of World Cup, so we'll see what uh what happens.
- 6:40SPEAKER_07: Uh another interesting one, um Curaçao played in their first World Cup game, and they did well for about 20 minutes, and then it little by little it kind of started falling apart.
- 6:52SPEAKER_07: It ended up 7-1, but so many positives.
- 6:55SPEAKER_07: First World Cup, they got a goal against one of the favorites that it's in the top five or six to to win the World Cup.
- 7:02SPEAKER_07: Um, the way they celebrated, the way they enjoyed themselves.
- 7:06SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, I mean, it was it was it was a historical night for all the fans and that team of Curaçao scoring a goal and making it to the World Cup.
- 7:15SPEAKER_07: So more power to them.
- 7:18SPEAKER_07: Um let's see, Scotland uh earned their first win in a World Cup since 1990.
- 7:24SPEAKER_07: Um hard game.
- 7:25SPEAKER_07: It was it was a difficult game, but uh they found a they found a way they managed to to get a result, we'll say, and uh and do something, you know.
- 7:36SPEAKER_07: I mean, I don't know how far they'll get.
- 7:38SPEAKER_07: It's a great story, underdog, but uh we'll see.
- 7:42SPEAKER_07: We'll see what happens.
- 7:44SPEAKER_07: Uh let's see, Qatar and uh Switzerland tied 1-1, which was quite interesting.
- 7:50SPEAKER_07: Um what happened today?
- 7:52SPEAKER_07: I think the biggest surprise is uh Cape Verde.
- 7:55SPEAKER_07: Cape Verde tied Spain, um, which no one saw coming.
- 7:59SPEAKER_07: None of the betting, I can guarantee you, Vegas is on its head right now, thinking that Cape Verde, everybody thought that Spain was going to be able to probably 3-4-0.
- 8:10SPEAKER_07: And uh it was it was wild to watch that game.
- 8:15SPEAKER_07: Um, they did such a great job.
- 8:16SPEAKER_07: Cape Veteran did a such a great job of defending nice tight lines, not a lot of gaps between, were very aggressive, and actually had a chance at the end on a corner kick to win the uh the game.
- 8:28SPEAKER_07: But they got out of there with a point, which I thought was was was surprising to everybody.
- 8:35SPEAKER_07: That's probably the talk of the town right now of what what's happening here at the World Cup.
- 8:41SPEAKER_07: That tie today threw everybody for a loop.
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: So I think who do I think will be the favorites right now?
- 8:48SPEAKER_07: I'd have to say not Spain, the way they played today.
- 8:52SPEAKER_07: Um uh we'll wait and see what happens.
- 8:56SPEAKER_07: Uh we haven't seen France, Argentina play yet.
- 9:00SPEAKER_07: We got Norway still to come, but I think some of the teams we thought were gonna be favorites um let us down a little bit.
- 9:08SPEAKER_07: Spain didn't do a great job, um, didn't play well, but uh but we know what they have.
- 9:15SPEAKER_07: You build into the tournament, so we'll see what happens there.
- 9:18SPEAKER_07: Um US, like I said, US, great, great start.
- 9:23SPEAKER_07: We love that.
- 9:24SPEAKER_07: But uh right now I'd have to say I can't wait to see France play, Argentina play, Norway play, and and kind of see where where we go.
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: You know what I mean?
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: Right now you'd have to say Germany is uh looked pretty good, pretty solid on that one.
- 9:39SPEAKER_07: Dark horses, god, who could be the dark horse?
- 9:42SPEAKER_07: I would say Japan could be a dark horse.
- 9:45SPEAKER_07: Uh we haven't seen Colombia, but Colombia is a dark horse.
- 9:49SPEAKER_07: So um Ecuador, it's a little disappointing.
- 9:53SPEAKER_07: I think that they were they were um a little surprised they had their opportunities to to shut down the game and the first half score a goal or two.
- 10:02SPEAKER_07: They just couldn't make that final pass.
- 10:04SPEAKER_07: And then I recost ended up scoring and taking the one-nothing victory on them.
- 10:08SPEAKER_07: And remember, this is a team from Ecuador who only gave up five goals on World Cup qualifying.
- 10:13SPEAKER_07: So a little surprising to see that they couldn't finish that game off.
- 10:17SPEAKER_07: Best was uh Cave Verde today.
- 10:20SPEAKER_07: Not gonna lie, it was fun to watch to see how they celebrated after the game.
- 10:25SPEAKER_07: A historical day.
- 10:26SPEAKER_07: You could see the fans were emotional in the stands.
- 10:28SPEAKER_07: So I think that's probably the biggest uh the most uh the biggest surprise that we saw.
- 10:36SPEAKER_07: Um, I think on the other side, the worst was the fact that you know it, Spain couldn't win today.
- 10:41SPEAKER_07: Spain couldn't find a way to to get the ball in the back of the net.
- 10:46SPEAKER_07: They just couldn't find a way to put that last pass in.
- 10:50SPEAKER_07: But there's still plenty of room for uh for growth.
- 10:53SPEAKER_07: They've got two more games, and we know more than likely 99.9% that they're going to probably get into the next round.
- 11:01SPEAKER_07: So anyway, that's my update.
- 11:04SPEAKER_07: I'll give you some more after uh a few more games pop up.
- 11:09SPEAKER_07: But I hope you're doing well, and I look forward to chatting with you guys soon.
- 11:13SPEAKER_07: Take care, man.

- 12:12SPEAKER_04: Phenomenal hockey player.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Abby Murphy is with us here in the T Chanley studios.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: Abby, what is up?
- 12:19SPEAKER_04: Nice to meet you.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you guys for having me.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: This is incredible.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Happy to be here.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: You know, Southside Pride is uh pretty huge, so um super pumped.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, this is really cool.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: You're from Evergreen Park.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: Uh oh.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: You went to most holy rebuttered, then to Mother Macaulay High School, where my daughter is gonna be matriculating.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: You ever use that word?
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Never.
- 12:40SPEAKER_04: I've heard of it.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: I've heard of it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: She's gonna be going to school there.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: That's a great spot.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: She loves it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_04: She uh uh she is fired up.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: But your journey kind of starts there in the in in the south side.
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: Um you started playing hockey at a at a young age.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Why don't you do walk us through some of that?
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, when I was uh I think introduced to hockey right around seven years old.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Um pretty funny, no family played hockey at all.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Uh my parents actually had really no idea what was um going on with in like the hockey world with boys, girls, and playing hockey, what was uh they were just weren't familiar with it.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Um but I had a neighbor directly across the street, his name was Tom Prattell, and uh he was the one who actually introduced me to hockey.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: He was always rollerblading in his backyard.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Um and I would go over there and kind of peek over the like older guy.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: When I was seven, he was probably like fourteen.
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: So um, but he was a great player, and I saw him rollerblading one day, went over there, peeked over there, and I just I was like, I want to do that too.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: So he let me kind of start playing with him and his buddies.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: He ended up going to St.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Rita and then playing in Montana.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Uh um Wow.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the rest is history.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: My dad blames him for all the money spent after those years.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: So um, but a lot of credit to him for sure.
- 13:57SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, it's i i it it is not cheap hockey and it's a lot of time as well.
- 14:02SPEAKER_04: I know you um were with the St.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: Jude, the St.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: Jude Knights.
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: A historic program on the South Side, Wayne.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: They they have like they're they're huge.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: Actually, my son was part of the St.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: Jude organization for a while.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Um but you know, it it is time and money.
- 14:15SPEAKER_04: Obviously, it it paid off.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: But at what point did you realize like you may be a a special player?
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean St.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Jude's an incredible organization.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: You know, my parents uh put me in there with the boys at the start for a couple years, and um you know, all the trips taken out of school Thursday through a Sunday was pretty fun.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: But uh playing with the boys, it was very eye-opening, you know.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: They push you very hard and um very grateful for that experience.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: But I would say when I moved to girls hockey when I was around nine or ten, um I kind of felt totally fell in love with the sport.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: And I have the boys to thank for that just for pushing me around, you know, growing up with two older brothers, I was kind of used to it.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Um but when I started playing with the girls, I would say around 12, 13 years old, that's when I knew is what I wanted to to pursue in the future.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: And um yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: And it's a like uh within rules, this is you play co-ed, you could have you know girls on the team.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: And was it a was it obvious or did you have like long hair coming out of your helmet?
- 15:19SPEAKER_04: Or did uh did what people maybe not know right away?
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I let the hair flow.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: I um made it known that I was a girl playing with the boys.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Um people were just very shocked to see when I was like throwing bodies at the boys and they're like, oh, this girl can handle it.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: So um, but no, that was a blast.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Lots of good memories, lots, lots of good road trips, but gonna miss it.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I love the uh the fact you talk about playing physically because I listened to a couple of your interviews.
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: Uh great appearance on uh spitting chicklets.
- 15:49SPEAKER_06: That was fun.
- 15:50SPEAKER_04: Actually, I have my son here.
- 15:51SPEAKER_06: I wanted him to read some of the quotes from the episode.
- 15:56SPEAKER_04: What my favorite one being like, I wish we could do that.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: If I could beat the shit out of somebody, I would enjoy that.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: When I heard the voice and then when we just met her just now, I was like, man, you are not what I was expecting.
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: I was playing somebody like six, eight, yeah.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, looking like a Viking, you know, you know, I'm like, wait a minute.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: I thought you were her driver.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's awesome.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: No, five, four.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Got all my teeth in in place.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: No, just never had any issue with the teeth?
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Never.
- 16:33SPEAKER_04: As physical as you play?
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: So where does this chippiness come from?
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: Is it this outside thing?
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: You think you got a little edge to you because of uh that or uh I'd say partially.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Um growing up, I obviously had two older brothers who beat the living crap out of me every single day.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: I had to learn how to kind of handle my own.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: Do they like when you tell that story?
- 16:53SPEAKER_04: How long are these guys?
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, they'll tell you.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: We used to have like a hundred and something holes in the wall, whether that was heads, elbows, fists, remote controllers, like something.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Um but also my dad was a Marine.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: So tough love growing up.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: A lot of tough love.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: You get it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you guys should break off and have a little uh I'd come back.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: Therapy session.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: But he'd like some of the things I thought.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: So lots of tough love, you know, growing up.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: But uh really worth it, you know.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Kind of learn how to handle yourself.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Definitely some south side meanness, I would say.
- 17:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's that's the thing.
- 17:31SPEAKER_05: Well, I can say what is it?
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: Is not the size of the dog and the fight in the fight is the size of the fight in the dog, so right?
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 17:37SPEAKER_05: You're just a tough person.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I like that one.
- 17:41SPEAKER_05: You have that on your way.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's a good one.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: You have a stitch stitch on a pillow in your I think it's somewhere.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Somewhere in the room.
- 17:49SPEAKER_04: I love the uh the fact of just your makeup as a player because you have this physical side of you, but you're a goal scorer.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: You're an offensive more than a threat.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: Like that's your specialty.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: So you don't always see that in in hockey.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: That the scorer is also like a semi-enforcer or ready to get a little chippy in in the corners.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's kind of finding like a balance.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: You know, hockey's a very unique sport where you have guys who are guys or girls who are just like those mean players, those fighters who are gonna go be willing to get dirty and in the corners and stuff like that, you know, and I'm willing to do that too.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: But I also love to score goals and celebrate with the team.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: So like I said, finding that fine balance between um being playing super skilled and also playing with uh with an edge.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: So you had this uh start with St.
- 18:42SPEAKER_04: Jude, and then you play with them until what age?
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Around ten.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Around ten.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Only a couple years.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: Okay, so then and then what you what who you I went to the Chicago Mission.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: I played there for eight years.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, you did some mission work.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Eight years, all girls, yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, very good work.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Like uh they taught you Mona Macaulay.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: You're out doing some work.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, good for you.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: So would a Bible and a hobby.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: Something like that.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: And they have some story players uh uh affiliated with their program.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: Did Kendall Coyne play?
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Kendall Coyne played for a couple years there.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: Oh mission.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: Is that where you met her?
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Um no, I did not meet her there.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: I actually met her sometime around like at the rink when they were trying out or they had like some camp.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Oh but yeah, she's uh unbelievable person.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: And she was somebody that you would maybe consider like a a role model or someone that's yeah, absolutely.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: I mean she's been the one who's just kind of gotten me to love the sport a little bit more, you know, and um what do you mean by that?
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Just find I find Kendall to be someone that I look up to um not just in hockey, but like outside of it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: You know, when I was younger, she allowed me to come work her camps and we were sitting down one day and she was I think I was like 15 or 16 years old helping her out with a camp.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: And she was sitting right here and she was like, Oh, like one day me and Murph are gonna play on the national team together and and and she's gonna be on the Olympic team.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: I'm like, You're crazy.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: I'm like, You're crazy.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: And uh a couple years later we were teammates in Beijing in 2022, and I was like, Whoa, I was like, You're not crazy.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: So um, but no, she's just someone who's made me a better person.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Um I learned a lot from her just from how she um goes about her life, you know, as a mom, as a hockey player, as a person.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but I've definitely learned a lot from her.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: She's just incredible.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and she's also from the uh Chicagoland area.
- 20:39SPEAKER_04: She went to Sandberg High School.
- 20:41SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 20:41SPEAKER_04: So it really is like something that uh the the women's game has grown so much in your lifetime.
- 20:47SPEAKER_04: A lot of it uh because of people like you and inspiring others uh other girls to to pick up this sport, it really is uh blowing up.
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: Can you talk about uh where this uh the the game is right now?
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: Because next week there's uh a draft.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's wild.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Um the PWHL, honestly, this is like a crazy fact.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: But I don't think it would have been a thing without Kendo Coin.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Um she's been a huge person that's made this happen.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Um she reached out to Billie Jean King, blah blah blah.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: And um I didn't know Billy Jean King was in the house.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: Oh really?
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 21:23SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's pretty cool.
- 21:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's insane.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: But Kendo was kind of like the main person.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I mean you're seeing what it's what it's doing right now.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: You know, they're going into their fourth year already and it's on the rise.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: You know, it started with six teams at eight, now twelve.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Um four years.
- 21:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was looking at the uh the league makeup.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: You got you know teams in Canada, obviously.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: Um and then the American uh markets are are great.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: Vegas, San Jose, Seattle.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: I don't see Chicago on here, which I'm surprised.
- 21:54SPEAKER_04: New York City, Minnesota, Boston, and uh I mean you're gonna be in this league in just a week's.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Time are you like how are you feeling about this draft?
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: It's gonna it's in Detroit you mentioned.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Yep, it's crazy.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: Um, like you said, kind of how it's evolved.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: You know, when when I was 10 years old, you couldn't really you didn't really have something to dream about or look forward to, and um it's people like Kendall Coyne and um other people who have kind of made this happen.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, I mean being able to even dream about it and and look forward to a professional career is pretty special and can't wait.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: It's coming up too fast.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: I know you mentioned if Ottawa drafts you, you're not gonna sign and that you're gonna hold out for another what other cities will you not?
- 22:39SPEAKER_04: You're gonna start some stuff.
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: Start some controversy playing Guam.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: The Guam team.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, no, willing to go anywhere.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Excited.
- 22:49SPEAKER_04: Has that happened in the league yet?
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: Have has anyone said, like, oh, I don't want to play for that team?
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: I actually don't know.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a great question.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Um I'm sure it has.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: But you have an a you have an agent.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: So you'll get drafted and then they'll work out a deal.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Contract, yeah.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: I mean, this is gonna be pretty new for me, too.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know what's going on.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: You know, just kind of taking it day by day.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: It's not for another week, so don't worry about it.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, good.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Day by day.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: That's how I live.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: So that's not a bad way to live.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: And you're gonna be in person, you'll be there.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: In person.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: You got your draft outfit picked out.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: We're working on it.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: You gotta narrow down or what?
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: No.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: Is there a hat involved?
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: No.
- 23:26SPEAKER_04: A cane, a wand?
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: A cane, maybe a cane.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Okay, some some big glasses or something.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, spice it up a little bit.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: No, we'll see.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: Gotta make it good though.
- 23:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's gonna be huge.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and and I know these moments are probably you know, they almost roll off you at this point, considering what you've been through.
- 23:45SPEAKER_04: You mentioned being on the national team.
- 23:47SPEAKER_04: 2022, you're in Beijing.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, you guys won a silver medal that year.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: I watched a bunch of interviews and I heard how this stuck with you.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: You know, winning silver, losing to the Canadians in Beijing.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: Can you talk about how that motivated you to the next games?
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: It's a punch in the gut.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, they're our competitor, like they are we hate them.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Let's just put it that way.
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: Um I love like fast forward, you guys are currently the gold medalists.
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: You beat them, you redeemed the loss, but now you still have it in you.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: If you ask anyone, they'll give you the same response.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's a war between us us two teams.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I mean, in Beijing, uh that one hurt, it stung a lot, you know.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: It's it's four years, every four years you get the chance, you know.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, that was my first Olympics.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was only on the national team for a couple years leading up to that.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: So definitely played a little different role in Beijing than we did in it than I did in Italy, and I think that was something cool to kind of look back on.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: Um how old were you during these games?
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I was 18.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: Holy cow! Yep.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: 18 and 22.
- 25:02SPEAKER_04: What an experience.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: So second youngest player.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Um, me and Caroline Harvey were we're the two youngest.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: So in history.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Just kids.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know in history, but it's it's fairly like right around there.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so we were like the two knuckleheads on the team that were super immature at the time, keeping everyone else young.
- 25:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, I mean, in Italy, our team was just so ready.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't think we could have been prepared any more than we were.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously we um smoked everyone through those through those um what four not even give up a goal, right?
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, wild.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, our goalie was standing on her head.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: Like she is an incredible hockey player.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Um what's her name?
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Aaron Frankel and Gwyneth Phillips.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: Oh wow.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, they I mean all of them are incredible, and obviously when you have as good a goalie's like that, it makes it easier to play in front of them.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, I mean being in Canada in that gold medal game, Megan Keller absolutely dangling the defender.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Did you see that video?
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: I love that dangling.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: Did you see that video?
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: It was nuts, and I mean just being out there, being able to celebrate with your team, it's a pretty special feeling.
- 26:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's gotta be.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's incredible to think uh and I want to talk about China for a minute because being in uh I've only been uh like Hong Kong.
- 26:21SPEAKER_04: Have you ever been to China?
- 26:22SPEAKER_04: No, no, ever no I mean it's never true.
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: I'm second in Sarmac.
- 26:29SPEAKER_04: I mean, you know, yeah, yeah.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: You've been to walk and roll at Chicago.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: I didn't want to throw my international credentials in your face.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: I had Panda Express yesterday.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: I love Panda Express.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 26:45SPEAKER_04: I used to do a joke about that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_04: It sounds like an Asian shipping company, you know?
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: Like, where's my order?
- 26:50SPEAKER_04: We sent it to Panda Express.
- 26:52SPEAKER_04: Should be there.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 26:53SPEAKER_06: It does.
- 26:55SPEAKER_06: So that's good.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: Talk about being in China.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: Uh you're you're 18 years old.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: Did you have time to explore this country?
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: So kind of funny.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: No, we didn't get to explore anything.
- 27:06SPEAKER_01: Next question.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: It was it was COVID.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: So I mean it was brutal.
- 27:11SPEAKER_04: Um you didn't you didn't go to where it started?
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: You didn't come to the right.
- 27:14SPEAKER_04: I know to Wuhan.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Don't even know where it started, but it was crazy being there during the pandemic, you know.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: Um we were testing like three, four times a day before we got there for like a couple months.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: You had to mask up and all that stuff.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Everything.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, you should have seen like inside the village.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: So we were only we were boxed into our village.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: And it was it was it was a decent size, but um, you were never allowed to go anywhere else besides the village.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Um were people able to kind of you know hang out together and because that's it's the Olympic Village is notorious, right?
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: For hookups and people just kind of partying.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: Can you take us inside the village?
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: What is what is that like?
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Um, so not before.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: If you were to test positive, you were out.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Um, so there were really no hangouts before.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Um, if you were to go into someone else's room, you're masking up your it's it was literally crazy.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Um, unless you were in with like your roommates.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: You had four roommates, so if you were in there, then you didn't have to mask up people dead sometimes.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but after the games were over, yeah, it was raised hell.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: Like it was, oh yeah.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: It was party time, no one cared.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: So no mask, no mask, yeah.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: We had probably like uh we had probably like 150 people in one room.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Oh boy!
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it was crazy.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Super spratter all the like all the countries just like in one room together.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: We were playing a bunch of games.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: It was so insane.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Oh man.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: And what are people drinking?
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: What are what's the I don't know.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: I don't even remember.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: There was like wine and beer, just a bunch of random stuff.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: Water who are the big partiers on the uh on your team.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: Are you leading that pack?
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: Um there's a couple because I I saw something uh you were chugging a beer with Jason Kelsey.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's a moment.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: That was pretty legendary.
- 29:12SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was a very unique experience for sure.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Um happy that he was able to do that with me.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: I cheated though.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say it loud and proud.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, you did?
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, I knew he was gonna be.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Look at the guy.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like, he would definitely chug like three faster than I chug one.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: So Megan Keller took a chug out of my bottle before we played.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, she didn't look good.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Tee's Handley has changed my life.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Skin has been amazing.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: We know you're here for pictures.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: I thought you were a model.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: In fact, Ape Burgazzi was like, Your skin's awesome.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Just like, I look forward to like, oh, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said, I'm 50, and everyone goes, What?
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: T Sh Hanley.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: It's the way we face the day.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: After being in China and having like being kind of a little bit handcuffed because of the COVID and everything, Italy, completely different experience.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, it was like one to one hundred, you know, not having family in Beijing either.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: We had no spectators at all.
- 30:18SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: Um that could be a good thing though, right?
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, less of a distraction.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: No, you like your people around?
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: Gives you happiness, fills the fills the boat with joy, you know.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Um but no, Beijing was still a blast.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: You know, you're still with the team that you love the most, and obviously it was a bummer to lose, but going to Italy, I mean, it was just literally like such a big difference.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Family, friends, you're going out to dinner, you're eating in the dining hall with your buddies, laughing, giggling, not really worrying about anything crazy.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:51SPEAKER_04: Um who's coming out to support you?
- 30:53SPEAKER_01: I had a lot.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: Uh my entire family came out.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Aunts, uncles, cousins, my three best friends from home from the south side came.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Two boys that I actually played at St.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Jude with came.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Two of my two first teammates.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: So that was fun.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Surprised they didn't get arrested in Italy, but that goes for a lot of my family.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: So all the Murphy's made it out of the house.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: Trying to tell an Italian police officer, my uncle's a cop.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: My dad's a cop.
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: What do you mean?
- 31:28SPEAKER_05: I gotta get out of this fountain.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: An alderman.
- 31:31SPEAKER_05: And put my clothes on.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: No, I was shocked.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: I was like, did the boys make it home from Venice?
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: Like yeah.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Most you got to bounce around the country?
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: Not me, but my family did.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: So they were able to go around Florence, Venice, Rome, Lugano, bunch of places.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: And you were were you mostly in Milan or I did not leave Milan.
- 31:52SPEAKER_04: You did not leave Milan.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: Did not leave.
- 31:54SPEAKER_04: What's the vibe there?
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: It was beautiful.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: I heard it's like the rich, like the uppity part of Italy.
- 32:01SPEAKER_04: Like, is that true?
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 32:05SPEAKER_01: Um, it was a beautiful area.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: You know, we went to like the Milan Cathedral, that's kind of like where the big area was to hang out, like during an off day.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I thought it was amazing.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: Did you talk shit about their pizza?
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: I did not.
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: You did?
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: I did not.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: I don't think I can talk shit about their pizza, but definitely nothing like Southside pizza, Chicago pizza.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Everyone's like, are you gonna get pizza?
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, I'm getting pasta.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Like, no.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: Different story with their pasta though.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Is it fabulous?
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: I've only been to Italy like one time when I was like very young.
- 32:38SPEAKER_04: I would love to go back there.
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: Um but you win the gold medal there, you beat Canada, um, and then you have time afterwards.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 32:47SPEAKER_04: And you went to the men's game.
- 32:49SPEAKER_04: Because you guys both brought home gold, and that was a really special moment.
- 32:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: And how many times that had that ever happened before where the men and the women both won gold?
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: So it's never happened before with three gold, so it's men's hockey, women's hockey, and men's paralympic, sled hockey.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: That's never happened before.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: Man.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: So a three P, yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Never happened before.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: So that was a really, really cool thing to be a part of.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: You know, you're a part of history.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: So And you have your medal?
- 33:22SPEAKER_04: You did you did you bring your medal?
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: The medal is here.
- 33:25SPEAKER_04: Can we see it?
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Can you the medal is here?
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Who's watching this thing?
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: If the staff the caretaker?
- 33:30SPEAKER_05: Somebody's down at the pawn show.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it it bounces it bounces around a lot.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 33:36SPEAKER_04: So how do you treat a gold medal?
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: What where where is this thing typically?
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I carried around in a little knit thing that one of my family friends made me, but we're protecting this one very well.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: Wow, look at this thing.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: That's cool, man.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Pretty neat.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, congratulations.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 33:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:58SPEAKER_05: So and how about the silver?
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, the silver's beat up.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: You turned that into earrings and stuff.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: So I was um uh we got home and my parents like threw like a little party, and I decided it was a good idea to put the metal on my dog, and she sprinted across the concrete, and it was like Oh yeah, it's not pretty.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: It is not pretty.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's funny.
- 34:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it looks you got a great reception after your first Olympics.
- 34:31SPEAKER_04: You came back to the neighborhood, people were so fired up.
- 34:33SPEAKER_04: They named a street after you.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:35SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: That was pretty cool.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: I was like walking down the street, my dad's like, come on, come on, come on, look up, and it's like Abbey Road.
- 34:42SPEAKER_05: I mean Abbey Road.
- 34:44SPEAKER_05: Oh, right.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just let's let's go to Liverpool.
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna show you something else.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: You didn't know.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Didn't know.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: That that's how you found out.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Oh wow.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: I know it's pretty special.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, I our neighborhood's incredible.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Everyone park, the the support that they've given me and my family throughout my journeys uh just been more than I could have ever asked for, you know.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: So to have that up there, I show a lot of people when they come visit in town and they're like, what the hell?
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: They're like, What?
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, they're like Abbey Road.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, it's me.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: But they laugh about it.
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: It's it's give directions to your house.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: Are you gonna go down 99th and take a left on the street named after me?
- 35:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_01: They might have to change it sometime.
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: No, no, no.
- 35:26SPEAKER_04: This is uh I mean you've only reinforced it.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: They named it after you after silver, not you're you're dangling the gold.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: What are we gonna do next?
- 35:33SPEAKER_04: I wanted to ask you about your college experience because you just finished at the University of Minnesota, which was uh, you know, you definitely left your mark there.
- 35:43SPEAKER_04: You you graduated did you graduate?
- 35:45SPEAKER_04: Graduated that's awesome.
- 35:47SPEAKER_04: Just recently?
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Did you have a um last year?
- 35:50SPEAKER_04: Okay last year.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: So you go back for a fifth year and you just you get a a second degree?
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Um I just took classes.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: No second degree.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: School wasn't for me.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: Well, you graduated.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: So you yeah, you got to.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: What did you major in?
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Um business marketing.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: That's an okay quacky.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was great.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: My parents were shocked.
- 36:10SPEAKER_05: Did you go on a hockey scholarship?
- 36:12SPEAKER_05: How did you get there?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: I did, yes.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: My parents are like, thank God you're good at hockey, because we don't know what would have happened.
- 36:19SPEAKER_04: And you left there as the all-time goal scorer.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: That's pretty great because there's been a lot of uh impressive players that have been in that program, right?
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, some legends.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: Like who?
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: Um, Natalie Darwitz, Chrissy Wendell, Amanda Kessel, Hannah Brandt, Taylor Heise.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: The list goes on and on.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: On and on.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: Great company.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Courtney Kennedy.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: Do you get calls from them as you pass them on the list?
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: Do they call you?
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: I get some texts.
- 36:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very nice.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: A lot of people are really good.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, love them, supportive.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 36:55SPEAKER_05: And then the ones who don't text, you know what this is.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was uh teammates with Taylor Heise and Grace Dumwinkle, a bunch of them on this Olympic team, and surpassed them and they're like super happy for you.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: You know, no one more deserving.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: So I mean, the friendship and the race relationships you make is like those are people that you will keep forever, you know.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: It seems like these girls really um were, you know.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Oh, very and and took to you because I saw a a video where they were asking who's the biggest biggest trash talker on the team.
- 37:27SPEAKER_04: And everyone was like, Well, one girl's like, I uh it should be unanimous.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: It's Murph.
- 37:32SPEAKER_04: Oh Abby Murphy.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, oh yeah, I know that.
- 37:36SPEAKER_04: That's the neighborhood.
- 37:38SPEAKER_06: You're bringing some Chicago to the locker room.
- 37:41SPEAKER_04: So you are a trash talker.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: What are you saying to these girls that you're playing against?
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't trash talk as much.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Like, listen, sometimes like things will come out here and there.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I can't say anything that I say on this podcast right now.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Oh man, but it gets it gets feisty, but people, it's more than me, I'll tell you that.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: It's not never just one person.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, takes a lot for me to hold back, and then if someone like crosses the line, then I'll just go attack them.
- 38:13SPEAKER_05: So, what's the nature of it?
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: Like, do you do any like opposition research and find out some personal things about what you're doing?
- 38:19SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
- 38:20SPEAKER_05: You have to.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Some girls will be like, hey, hey, like Camera, like I know something.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Like, she won't like to hear this, so yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: That's what friends are for though, like your teammates, like being friends with like the veterans, like they know a lot more than we know.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: So um, but it's fun.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Everyone kind of gets after it, especially against the Canadians, against when you get to the highest level, and even kind of trash talk in different languages, like you know, you learn how to say you suck and Mandarin.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: Um, I actually had a Czech teammate who taught taught me a couple.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't really remember them, but she's she was like, Yeah, I got one for you.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, actually, I do know what it is, but I what was it?
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know what it is.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Kudva?
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: I think it I think it means fudge.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Fudge?
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but I think so much restraint on our podcast.
- 39:12SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 39:13SPEAKER_04: You're like, oh man, these bitches, I'll fuck them up.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: I don't want to beat their ass.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: I wish I could throw the gloves down all the time.
- 39:21SPEAKER_04: Punch somebody all the time.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: We're out after.
- 39:24SPEAKER_04: I love when you said this.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: This is a good phrase.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: You were talking about partying.
- 39:27SPEAKER_04: You guys were uh you talked about somebody uh that uh you're like, I bet he could delete a bunch of beers.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Delete it's a good phrase.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: I like I like that one.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's good lingo.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: But um, I would say like people think I'm a trash talker, but like people just like don't like me because of like how I play, like my style.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Like I'm all over people, you know, like I'm annoying to play against, like I'm a pest, you know.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: So like it's not always what's that mean being just like being like aggravating, like um like relentless, like a slash, or correct.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: Just like giving them no time and space.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Like you're if there's some.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: And they just like they hate it.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're giving them a slash on the hands and the refs don't call it, it's like what the heck?
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: You know, that's when you're in the and that's when your mother doesn't know Exactly, exactly.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: So but it's fun.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: It's fun to be a villain.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: What when you get on the rink, uh is your mindset uh I'm the best player on the on this ice, but no one can uh no one's faster than me?
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: Because you are one of the fastest, uh quickest skaters uh in the game, correct?
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: I'd say up there.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Um Kendall Coin's definitely the fastest.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: Um heck yeah.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Um you know, she did the the all-star speed speed skating.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you ever saw that a couple years ago.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but sh we're close.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: We like to compete, but um, I'm giving her that one for sure.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: Um as far as like being the best player on the ice, I don't always say that, you know, but I'll always give my best.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: Um you know, there's a lot of great talent out there, and I just like to play kind of be creative and and and try new things.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: So whenever you go out there, it's just it's all about giving your best, giving everything you got.
- 41:19SPEAKER_04: One of your all-time highlights is the assist.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: I'm sure everyone asks you asked me about it.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: Um we gotta show a clip of this.
- 41:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, it is insane, and we will share it, but walk us through that moment.
- 41:31SPEAKER_04: And and I heard you had seen this before.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: So I saw it prior, maybe like a month or two before.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Um actually one of the kids I used to skate with, his name is Rikerly, he played at Michigan State.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Um, he tried it in a game, he got it through but didn't score.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and I only just saw like a video, and then like a couple months later, I'm always in practice like trying new things, like flicking up the puck and like just trying to come up with something crazy that no one would really think of.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: So like these ideas start to like pop in my head.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Um so I was in practice leading leading up to our our weekend of games, and I did it to my teammate, and she was like, Don't ever fucking do that to me again.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Like, and I'm like, No, like I'm gonna embarrass you.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: Like, I I'm trying new things, like let me try it against you, and it worked.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: I didn't score.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and then fast forward to these games, I was just picked up the puck in the defensive zone, loose puck, and um skated as fast as I can.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'm gonna do it, like might as well try it if it doesn't work, whatever, and flipped up the puck, and the D went to go grab it, and then I hit it down between her legs, nutmegged her.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Not megd her and then um caught it on my backhand and didn't have much time to kind of catch it and shoot.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: So saw my teammate Bella on the back door and sliced it over to her with one hand and she hit that thing in back door.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: But the cool thing is is that if Bella Vinale doesn't put that in in the net and score that goal, it's it's not a highlight reel.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: You know, it takes a team effort to to make things like that happen.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: So, but I mean it was all over the internet, which is pretty special.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: Like most incredible assist of all time.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: I mean it was something.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: It was crazy.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: I couldn't believe it.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: I came on the bench and and my coach was like, You're nuts.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: He was like, Like, how does that like I dream about doing that, like stuff like that.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: But um that's no, it's it's pretty special, especially like seeing things on Twitter about women's hockey, like being as skilled as as men's hockey and and stuff like that's just important for growing the game, and I'm happy that I can just do do that a little bit.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it is great hockey.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, it really is.
- 43:50SPEAKER_04: And uh I saw one of your penalty shots too, which was phenomenal.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: A little bit of a drag, and you just picked it up and put it up top right.
- 43:58SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Um is that something you improvised or do you have a when you are in a penalty situation how many shots do you have in your mind and are you picking one as you're skating or you kind of know what you're gonna do before the game?
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: I usually have one um set.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: You know when I go to bed at night I probably watch like an hour worth of hockey highlight reels.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Same.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah you have to you know it's it's about like putting that stuff in your head and when I come when it comes to game practice mentality I'm just I have things in the back of my head that I'm looking forward to trying and that one I I knew I was doing it and then oh yeah um yeah well that was a cool that was a nice one and I was pretty pretty excited the team was pumped up did a dab as a celebration I looked back I look back on that and I'm like did I really dab so but my my teammates were like you you won't do it and I was like yeah like they were like who's gonna do the dab and I'm like whatever might as well be me like I'm I've already had so many things and I just did it and I look back on I'm like that was so like 2000 like crazy so in the moment my dad look at our celebration highlights before the next day literally after the game my dad's like what the hell were you doing like with the selling yeah he's like what is that I was like it's the dab you have a lot of those in your uh Rolodex too a lot of different always what's your favorite celebration um I would say either like jumping into the glass really hard or like oh for real yeah it's just like I'm hyped up you know yeah yeah just boom yeah I know my uh team doctors got really mad because I had shoulder surgery so I would they were like stop like you're ruining your shoulder and I was like I can't help it like it's just like the glasses in front of me with shoulder up yeah yeah the right one right yeah it's all strong now oh yeah so but yeah lots of celebrations um I would say my favorites one knee with the throw the patty cane oh yeah that's what I saw too yeah yeah that they look like Patrick Kane so hey Father's Day is right around the corner and I bet you don't have a gift yet so here's an idea how about some Tiege Hanley it's a complete skincare system I use it every day face wash moisturizer the whole thing laid out simply too so there's no guesswork that's why guys use it because it's not complicated right now we're running 20% off the 90 day routines which honestly that's the move for the gift.
- 46:32SPEAKER_04: You're not just giving a one time thing you're setting the guy up for three months he'll use it he'll notice a difference and he'll wonder why he didn't start sooner.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: Head to tease.com slash pat to grab it before Father's Day that's T-I-E-G-E dot com slash pat.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: Who are the players that have influenced you the most or that you look up to in the on the men's side outside of women always love Patrick Kane a huge Blackhawks fan always um you know I was always a big fan of Andrew Shaw just his feistiness.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: I mean you came up during the Blackhawks era right so this and I noticed that drew a lot of people towards hockey that game grew a ton versus when I was coming up in like 90s everybody was playing basketball and and now you know you see so many kids playing hockey in the street and a lot of these leagues blew up they built a rink in Morgan Morgan Park nice program there.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: So I think that did have a big influence I'm sure that was uh part of your your journey.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: Very I mean it's it was a special time met a few of them but not did you delete any beers I did not I did not um erase some brain cells yeah right erase some brain cells we gotta keep as many as we can of those um but yeah I mean growing up in that era was pretty special it was like watching hockey all the time the blackhawks were were always a um we were always big fans of them you know sitting in the backyard my dad had like this huge like alarm alarm and like every time the hawks would score it would like ring the whole neighborhood like it would that's how loud it was yeah it was nuts but uh yeah who else Ryan Hartman when he was on the Hawks big fan but I can Patrick Sharp I mean Marion Hovsa I mean yeah list goes on and on yeah so much talent a lot of deep uh rosters so it had the um do you have a story behind your number the number you were thirty seven thirty seven um yeah it's actually really crazy I was trying out and they just gave me three they had a piece of paper and it said thirty five thirty six or thirty seven pick your number and I was like that's all I get I was like thirty five's a goalie number how old were you at this point?
- 48:50SPEAKER_01: I was I think this was when I was eighteen eighteen seventeen or eighteen nineteen yeah eighteen right before I was on and then once I was thirty seven I kind of stuck with that for for the rest of the national team you know eighteen's my family number so that was 18 for the gophers my mom was a a legendary softball player oh was she really oh yeah she uh she was insane yeah oftentimes you hear this you know yeah you most of the time the parents are really great athletes too your mom played softball yes she was a gymnast before really messed up her knees real bad so but she was an amazing athlete and then uh softball she was uh I think she played outfield I don't know if she's got any highlight reels but she was diving for balls she always tells me about it when we're watching softball she's like these girls need to start like throwing their bodies on the line I'm like you're nuts so but um yeah she's in the hall of fame at St.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Xavier really uh Evergreen yeah that's very cool yeah she's she's a badass.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: Did you play other sports growing up?
- 49:56SPEAKER_04: Do you think that do you encourage that for younger girls now like what would you say to someone coming up at you know seven eight years old like do you sell you play as much as you can play all the different sports?
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: I would I think playing as many sports as possible is amazing.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: I played basketball volleyball soccer lacrosse baseball um what I was talking smacking all these sports too not always no basketball got feisty in like at most her redeemer like playing St.

- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Catharines Barnabas you'd have scratches all over your arms like nuts.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: I just coached my daughter basketball these last several years we just finished an eighth grade season this year dude I and I was talking about it eighth grade girls basketball especially you know these leagues where you you know they know each other they see each other uh around the neighborhood dude they get after it yeah very physical very that is fun it's it's cool like it's were you guys good were you pretty good at most of these I was okay yeah I love playing baseball with the boys yeah um like fast pitch you know striking boys out was always a good feeling softball was a little slower for my liking um but still really really cool experiences basketball was probably my second favorite sport um but obviously had to give that up for hockey same season so it's fast pace very I love when you switch from offense to defense in like you know that that's always just keeps it yeah but I feel like as like a younger girl girl or boy playing as many sports as possible like you find what you love to do like really fast and I think just getting that experience to to vast sports is is unique.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah you know especially if you can do it why not right you know and you know it's a it's probably a pain for the parents going back to forth back and forth to sport to sport but I mean I was super grateful for the experiences I had playing so many different sports played lacrosse in high school that was that was fun but too many rules too many rules just let me like smack you know like you couldn't do can't hit people can't hit people no no body checking but through high school you played all four years or two years.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: Two years so by the time you're like a junior in high school you're pretty much focused just on hockey just on hockey yeah now when does the season start hockey yeah hockey it was usually like September through March.
- 52:23SPEAKER_01: Through March yeah so what do you do to get prepared what's your training regimen what's it um it's a lot you know it's nonstop I feel like that's the unique thing about hockey is like it's year round you know and in the summer you get what maybe two two months off um so it's it's fun to kind of stay busy um stay working I love waking up early going to work out and skate you know like it's something that I've never gotten sick of um but it's just it's your fool.
- 52:54SPEAKER_01: I was up today at six o'clock going to work out at at seven at my gym here in in I think it's in Oaklawn.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: So doing what what do you do?
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: Just weightlifting staying in shape I do a lot of things just to get faster um like speed agility stuff always what are you doing like ladder or ladder runs biking conditioning um cone work yeah it's everything my trainer kills me but he's uh he's insane he's he's been very helpful for me how long have you been working with the trainer two years same guy same guy does he go to Minnesota um no he actually works um he he just bought the shim in Oaklawn last summer oh okay so but my trainer up in Minnesota you guys gotta do some research on him he's crazy oh really oh my gosh never met someone like he's just like big dude yeah and he does like a lot of research on on training and he's done he's also our USA coach um strength and strength and conditioning coach but he is he's crazy he is like I've never met someone like this guy his name's Cal Deets Cal Deets Cal Dietz oh really yeah you gotta look at it does he get in your face oh no but he's just he's really smart and he's just like very you know straightforward and just get to work kind of thing you don't want to get in his way though what do you um what do you have to uh drink in in between your workouts or are you strictly water or do you have like uh something else you go to electrolytes or water um stuff like that LMT drip drops um what is that drip drop drip drop drip drop never heard of it no it's like an electrolyte mix powder oh okay yeah just poured in it just enhances the hydration brother named drip drop but that was you know a long time ago that's a different sport that's awesome yeah that's awesome yeah but um so how about outside of hockey how do you chill what's your downtime what do you um what are you doing when you're not playing um spending time with family uh a lot living at home it's kind of nice being up in Minnesota coming back home to the south side you know and I do a lot of golf do you I do a lot of golf I love golfing yeah yeah where you play um just around local do people invite you out like oh yeah come play with us yeah sometimes yeah meadows um fountain where I just golf I went out to be strictly at country clubs yeah no right don't they give you a pass around here no you just bring in showing the metal yeah right I mean that'd be nice yeah that's like the world should be Beverly Yes exactly just never been there so mm we're gonna get you in there yeah that'd be pretty cool we know some people we'll get you pedals and people I really don't I really don't my son's a caddy there I can see what happens yeah he just started so is my cousin maybe they're friends yeah yeah how old is he um she is twenty twenty oh she's 20 yeah yeah this kid's only you know my guy's and going into eighth grade okay and he signed up and passed but uh now he's gotta actually go it's a good place to caddy though it is yeah right the best part about T Shanley is the results 95% of users report visible improvements to their skin and about 80% say they start getting compliments.

- 58:01SPEAKER_04: Beautiful so we're gonna put it up here why the two Ys just to get the handles I I wasn't available with one Y.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: Oh really so hopefully I could change it one day.
- 58:11SPEAKER_05: Do you hope to become the the face of women's hockey I think it would be really fun to be someone who can do that.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: You know I think it's really important to find ways to grow the game and I think that that's what I'm trying to do you know in any way that I can so um being the face of the league would be very fun and um looking forward to to kind of trying to do that.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be it's gonna be different though coming into a league that's um on the rise and 'cause the league hasn't been around that long right correct going on year four.
- 58:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah so you have a chance to really imprint yourself and like be associated.
- 58:53SPEAKER_05: Because it seems like a league once they have a face then it and it makes people familiar with who you are then they get interested in the sport based on the fact that they like you.
- 59:04SPEAKER_01: Absolutely yeah yeah a lot of people have done done good at that so far too you know it's it's kind of interesting because at with when they had eight teams yeah they were um kind of starting to find like attachments to these players in some cities and then um with this expansion process those players are getting taken so people are getting upset that like their face of their city is is leaving.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: So um I think that's what's cool with us coming in is that there's different faces now in these huge cities, you know, in Vegas or San Jose or Detroit wherever that might be in Vancouver or Seattle you know and um it's kind of giving us chances to to kind of be those big names which is exciting.
- 59:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah it's too bad I mean I mean I'm sure you don't know or like have you heard about what if Chicago gonna get a team are they talking about it or what's the deal?
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't know.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: There were talks about it this year but not really sure what kind of held them back for from from not doing that.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: I mean nothing against San Jose but they got a team I can't believe we don't I I bet we will soon I know and they had they they had good attendance for the two two two games they had here at all state you know but uh hopefully one day because women's hockey here I feel like is is really growing you know you have a lot of a lot of girls who um me Kendall Jesse Confur Savannah Harman ton of girls who are play from Chicago um who are playing in this league so you're seeing a lot of a lot of girls register for hockey which is exciting um but Chicago would be a hot spot.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: Do you have a favorite arena or town some cities that you love to play in there's been a lot yeah um we played at um played in LA is that staple center oh yeah that was that was a really cool experience out there um playing USA against Canada um but there's a ton you know Cleveland and Buffalo were very cool the areas were fun um have you ever partied with the Canadians no is there is that a line like you will never even like in the Olympics are for two more years and you you run into each other is there any kind of like hang?
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_01: No is it is there a site no I mean I wouldn't I don't know if my other teammates would uh uh no no all right but you could happen they could end up being your teammate yeah as as well right and they're still that line will not be it i if they're my teammate that's different you know but if it's like Canada's in a bar and I'm walking into the bar I'm I immediately exiting that bar like immediately yeah like if I like we just like can't do it.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah like it's difficult.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_04: Otherwise are you guys gonna be thrown down?
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah maybe yeah I mean that'd be fun though I'm in for it I'd like I like I'd love that yeah a big bar flat well then maybe you shouldn't walk out I don't know just stay in there just hang out you might just bump someone on accident yeah you might just hit town where's the Canadian bar yeah no but if I'm teammates with them that's so different.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah you know I'll you know teammate is is that I I have their back yeah once they're on my team.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: Well this is exciting I mean this draft is gonna be great you're gonna be a very high pick are there projections have you seen any predictions on not much I mean I'm battling against a good friend Caroline Harvey you know but not really battling I wouldn't say that word but um she's a she's an amazing player super unique you know had an unbelievable year um so up there with her which is exciting you know we've been on this like really fun journey since we were like sixteen together really kind of making all these teams and kind of sharing that experience with our family our family ah New Hampshire maybe I don't know somewhere on the east coast Main Maine okay but she went to Wisconsin so no it's exciting oh so you guys very battled always yeah no but it's it's a good it's a good thing always have you done any doing it's asking about about you know being the face of women's hockey have you done any like uh speaking engagements or road stuff like that getting out and uh some keynote um trying you know you do little things whether it's like little media stuff traveling like to the west coast or the east coast but um actually going out to somewhere near San Jose doing doing a little camp trying to get get your name out there is pretty important so but I feel like there's a couple little things not for sure not for sure are you starting to start thinking about I don't know I just speculate yeah they're putting things together it can go anyway no one knows the the the draft order Vancouver's got the number one pick that's all all we know yeah so well I'm sure you're aware about how many people you're inspiring and uh there's gotta be so many you know young players that are looking up to you and watching your highlight reel and learning more about you prepping for this because you've been on my radar a long time I've been hearing about you uh you know being from the neighborhood for quite a while so really appreciate you coming in yeah awesome to meet you and you're just starting out like put it in perspective put it in perspective for us the most veteran player on the most on the recent Olympic team would be who and how many Olympics did they play in?
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: Um Hillary Knight the this in Italy was her fifth Olympics fifth fifth Olympics.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Wow and you started at 18 and now you I started 18 yeah um but yeah she's I don't know how she does it you know playing with an injury there a lot of our a lot of our players are playing with injuries in Italy um were you was not no I was very healthy yeah um but that just shows you the mentality that our team had going in there you know and for her to be fifth Olympic she actually got married or engaged out there too in Italy.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_04: Oh right before the gold medal game right before the gold metal game it's almost like maybe gonna be a distraction or a jinx yeah no it couldn't have worked out any better though you know it worked out so but that was pretty cool she got engaged the day before day before oh man and nobody knew that was coming nobody uh some people had an idea but she likes to keep things pretty pretty hidden oh yeah yeah she's awesome sounds like it yeah yeah and she announces it yeah I know we were all on the bus we were like dude Hillary just posted like she's engaged and we were like what so no it was it was it was pretty funny I am yeah maybe it took some distraction away so took some pressure off for sure for sure uh yeah just to think about how many you know potential games you could play in and you're just kind of really starting out with this career so wish you all the best thank you so much yeah Dwayne Pat I appreciate you guys this has been fun and yeah the journey's been wild but plenty more to to look forward to yeah we're gonna be we're gonna be watching can't wait to see what happens with the draft all right you guys check out Abby Murphy on Instagram follow her career go online and just look up her highlights insane you are quite a player really uh enjoy watching you uh and thank you again for being here thank you so much Pat all right guys that is our episode for this week uh that was number 42 can you believe that uh we hope you're subscribing downloading review us check us out on YouTube and we hope you got a whole lot of great episodes have you listened to any of our episodes Abby um a little bit I that's a no I stalked your Instagram I appreciate that that's good Pat McGann show yeah that's it don't worry thanks Abby all right bye everybody the Pat McGann Show is brought to you by the Pat McGann show team producer Paula Thornton showrunner Tom Bambera audio engineer Tommy Grant video production Eddie Perez video and audio editor Madeline Curlis organic content manager George Master recorded at T Hanley Studios in Chicago Illinois
