Latest / The M&M Experience / Tennessee's Botched Execution
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, how do we feel with this botched execution of
- 0:06Speaker 1: like a pillow, like a nurse sneaking into the hospital
- 0:10Speaker 1: room and putting a pillow over her head? I mean,
- 0:13Speaker 1: is that more humane than injecting? What do they do
- 0:17Speaker 1: with her now? Now what do they do?
- 0:20Speaker 2: For those that don't know, Krista Gale Pike was the
- 0:23Speaker 2: poster woman for the death penalty, a brutal murderess.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Demon.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Horrible.
- 0:28Speaker 1: In fact, quote, I cut that B word nine times.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I cut that B word's throat nine times, and the
- 0:37Speaker 1: B word didn't die. That's this nice lady that's on
- 0:40Speaker 1: death row right now that they can't figure out how
- 0:43Speaker 1: to kill. I mean, the Supreme Court had to go
- 0:46Speaker 1: green light the execution because an appeals court put it
- 0:50Speaker 1: on hold, which, by the way, that's cruel. She's an
- 0:53Speaker 1: hour away. You talk about cruel and unusual punishment. She's
- 0:56Speaker 1: about to die. Then they say, oh, no, there's a stay. Oh,
- 0:58Speaker 1: let's throw it to the Supreme Court. Oh, no. Then
- 1:00Speaker 1: the Supreme Court says, yeah, go ahead. Of course we're
- 1:02Speaker 1: going to do it. And, of course, it was the
- 1:03Speaker 1: typical 6-3. from the SCOTUS. It's always the same three
- 1:10Speaker 1: libs holding out. They're always on the wrong side of
- 1:12Speaker 1: every issue. Anyway, and this is not the first time
- 1:15Speaker 1: this has happened in Tennessee. Or in America.
- 1:19Speaker 2: We have a lethal injection problem. I think there's a
- 1:23Speaker 2: supply chain problem with the quality of the stuff they're
- 1:25Speaker 2: using because they could not kill her. And the question,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and this is, I don't mean funny like in a
- 1:30Speaker 2: real comical way, but it is almost satire, What did
- 1:34Speaker 2: they do with her when they failed to kill her?
- 1:36Speaker 2: They took her to the hospital. She's getting treated. The hospital? Yes.
- 1:40Speaker 2: To what?
- 1:40Speaker 1: To try to make her better?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yes, to get better so we can ostensibly try to
- 1:46Speaker 2: execute her again.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Kill her again.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Well, you know what, though? I'm sorry. I'm enough. of
- 1:51Speaker 1: a conspiracy theorist. I don't think I'm a conspiracy theorist,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but maybe I am. This stinks like yesterday's herring. It's
- 1:59Speaker 1: like somebody said, well, you know what? If we don't
- 2:01Speaker 1: put it in the vein the right way, maybe she'll
- 2:03Speaker 1: live and they'll get rid of this barbaric death penalty.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I do not dismiss that at all from people tainting
- 2:12Speaker 2: The supply of lethal injection chemicals to any one of
- 2:17Speaker 2: a number of things, and not to be comical again,
- 2:20Speaker 2: but of course, you know what the last thing they
- 2:22Speaker 2: do before you get the needle in Huntsville or in
- 2:24Speaker 2: Tennessee or whatever is they swab your arm because you
- 2:27Speaker 2: don't want that thing to get infected.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Right, you don't want a little infection there. That is
- 2:31Speaker 1: so right. Well, I also love the last meal thing. Now,
- 2:34Speaker 1: she didn't want a last meal. Look, I was up
- 2:38Speaker 1: late the night watching this crap unfold. And, of course,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I always have to make it about me. I'm now convinced,
- 2:43Speaker 1: because of my new cardiovascular disease, that I'm about to
- 2:46Speaker 1: keel over any second now. And they can't kill her.
- 2:49Speaker 1: I didn't hurt anybody. And they can't kill her intentionally.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And I'm about to drop. I may drop during M &
- 2:56Speaker 1: M Extra today. I'm right in the middle, and they
- 3:00Speaker 1: can't kill this woman who's.
- 3:02Speaker 2: A brutal murderer?
- 3:05Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. What's going on in the world today?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Can I pause all this weird and great news? Incidentally,
- 3:13Speaker 1: are you catching the vibe shift about polls, about the economy?
- 3:18Speaker 1: even gas prices.
- 3:20Speaker 2: I am, and I am cautiously vigilant in looking at
- 3:24Speaker 2: where this all might go, and that would.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Be really good. Now they're picking Kansas, Iowa, Alaska, Collins
- 3:33Speaker 1: and Maine. Now they're saying Michelle Tafoya's in play against Flanagan.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to her next week on the show.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Oh, awesome.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Michelle Tafoya. But let's just pause for a moment and
- 3:45Speaker 1: talk about the goodness of of the Mark Davis audience.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And I mean the Mark Davis. Look, you're like, I
- 3:51Speaker 1: know you're a rock star. I get it. I know.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I mean, I'm the guy that carries your bags around.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So we did something kind of neat in the past,
- 4:02Speaker 1: over the years, when we have a partnership with somebody
- 4:06Speaker 1: that's doing good. Like, let's say Preborn, an organization that
- 4:10Speaker 1: is saving babies' lives. You can provide an ultrasound device
- 4:15Speaker 1: to a young woman who's considering an abortion. And when
- 4:17Speaker 1: she sees that baby and hears that baby's heartbeat, she's
- 4:21Speaker 1: two times more likely to save that baby and not
- 4:23Speaker 1: abort it than not. And they've become the title sponsor
- 4:28Speaker 1: of our new venture that just celebrated 100 episodes yesterday,
- 4:33Speaker 1: M & M Extra. Mark Davis, Mike Gallagher, unfiltered, unscripted.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Mark's always going blue. I can't believe your language.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Stop it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Your potty mouth. I mean, it's crap. I'm yammering about it.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I'm showing my EKG and my health results on the podcast.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I mean, we get very personal. And we're having a ball,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and we have so much fun. We hope everybody checks
- 4:52Speaker 1: out M & M Extra wherever you get your podcasts. Well,
- 4:56Speaker 1: with Preborn, you could do $ 28 a month to provide
- 4:59Speaker 1: one ultrasound a month. But $ 15, 000 buys a whole ultrasound
- 5:05Speaker 1: machine to save babies for years. I thought, wouldn't it
- 5:09Speaker 1: be kind of neat if M & M Extra sponsored
- 5:12Speaker 1: a machine, if we could provide a machine from the podcast?
- 5:16Speaker 1: So I said, the fun you and I have had,
- 5:18Speaker 1: we've had lunches in Dallas for years with big donors
- 5:21Speaker 1: that are big-hearted people who want to hang out with
- 5:24Speaker 1: you and me at a beautiful restaurant. We have this
- 5:26Speaker 1: great spot picked out, private room. And I thought, all
- 5:29Speaker 1: we need are five people to donate $ 5, 000. I mean, $ 3, 000.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Five people to donate $ 3, 000 apiece. They can bring a guest,
- 5:36Speaker 1: of course. And we'll have an ultrasound machine, courtesy of
- 5:40Speaker 1: Eminem Extra, the podcast. Mark, we've got four out of five.
- 5:44Speaker 1: We have one slot left.
- 5:46Speaker 2: We're this close. We're this close.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We just need one person. So, right now. Right now,
- 5:53Speaker 1: if you call 800-655-MIKE, Tracy standing by, 800-655-6453, it's a
- 6:01Speaker 1: tax-deductible donation. There's only one seat. Well, there's two seats
- 6:05Speaker 1: technically left.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Because you get to bring somebody.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Right. But there's one slot left. Four people, Corey, Greg, Buddy, John,
- 6:13Speaker 1: have already donated $ 3, 000 apiece. All we need is one more,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and I think we're going to get it. And we
- 6:17Speaker 1: might get it today. So if you're inclined to save lives,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and if you're pro-life, this is a great way to
- 6:23Speaker 1: show it. $ 3, 000 tax-deductible donation, courtesy of M & M.
- 6:28Speaker 1: We'll have an ultrasound machine.
- 6:29Speaker 2: We'll set up the date. We'll get with everybody and
- 6:31Speaker 2: see what date works best for everybody as we work
- 6:33Speaker 2: through the fall. It's not going to be next week
- 6:35Speaker 2: or anything. We'll get with everybody's schedule and see what
- 6:37Speaker 2: works well. Try to get it certainly done before the
- 6:39Speaker 2: holidays at a wonderful, close to the FW airport, and
- 6:43Speaker 2: just a nice, convenient, wonderful place. So if you'd like
- 6:45Speaker 2: that last... last seat for you and your plus one
- 6:49Speaker 2: as we celebrate the acquisition of an ultrasound machine for pre-born.
- 6:52Speaker 2: But what we're really going to do is sit around.
- 6:53Speaker 2: We're going to eat. We're going to sling hot topics.
- 6:56Speaker 2: We're going to talk about stuff. Lots of Q & A.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's always just a joy to do this with listeners,
- 7:00Speaker 2: and we'd love for you to be a part of it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: We hope first one in gets it. So we've only
- 7:04Speaker 1: got one slot left, 800-655-6453. Call right now, Trace. Let's
- 7:09Speaker 1: get that one person in, and I have a good feeling.
- 7:11Speaker 1: All right. Now, let's see how that happens in the
- 7:14Speaker 1: next couple of minutes. Fingers crossed. Prayers are up that
- 7:16Speaker 1: somebody's heart is touched and wants to save those lives
- 7:19Speaker 1: and have lunch with Mark and Mike in the Dallas-Fort
- 7:21Speaker 1: Worth Metroplex. So go back. Honest to goodness, I'm not
- 7:24Speaker 1: being rhetorical. What do they do with her now?
- 7:28Speaker 2: He just can't let it go. Well, they stabilize her. Well, no,
- 7:32Speaker 2: you haven't answered me. No, well, they stabilize her. And
- 7:35Speaker 2: now what? And then we tee it up and give
- 7:37Speaker 2: it another shot.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Do it again?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Isn't there like a thing when you survive an accident?
- 7:44Speaker 2: No, that's a complete urban. Of course not.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Really?
- 7:48Speaker 2: We tried. We can't do it again. No, you guys.
- 7:51Speaker 1: The audience. You get it right. The text message audience
- 7:55Speaker 1: is in a forgiving mood. Dallas just wrote they need
- 7:58Speaker 1: to drive a silver stake through her heart.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Sorry, wow.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Well, I mean, look, it's hard to kill the devil.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I mean, the devil, it's hard to stamp out evil.
- 8:10Speaker 2: And maybe we have a methodology issue because this did
- 8:14Speaker 2: not happen with old Sparky in the state of Florida
- 8:16Speaker 2: in an execution that I witnessed in July of 1984.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I forgot about that. You saw, you witnessed an execution.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And it turned me into a staunch death penalty supporter.
- 8:30Speaker 2: People said, if you ever see one, you'll be shrieking
- 8:33Speaker 2: and repelled by the whole thing. I'm 26 when I
- 8:36Speaker 2: go into this thing, and I've got a kind of
- 8:38Speaker 2: a young punk libertarian thing going, does government really need
- 8:42Speaker 2: to determine when people live or die, blah, blah, blah,
- 8:44Speaker 2: which is a good sentence, but the ultimate answer is yes,
- 8:47Speaker 2: because the death penalty is proper. It's symmetrical. It's scriptural.
- 8:50Speaker 2: It's good. And when I saw the relief on the
- 8:53Speaker 2: faces of the victims of this horrible man who had
- 8:55Speaker 2: slaughtered people in Miami a couple years earlier, I was like,
- 8:58Speaker 2: I said, I just saw something that was good and just. Now,
- 9:01Speaker 2: that was 2,000 volts at 14 amps, and he was
- 9:04Speaker 2: gone in, like, 90 seconds.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Well, you know what also works? You know what also works?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Firing squad. Firing squad doesn't really miss.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Is Gary Gilmore, right? Utah, 1970-something. His famous quote, let's
- 9:16Speaker 2: do it. And how did they do that? They put, like,
- 9:20Speaker 2: five guys, and, like, only one or two of them
- 9:22Speaker 2: have actual... They're real concerned about someone... Now, this is interesting.
- 9:27Speaker 2: How would you like to be the executioner on that staff?
- 9:32Speaker 2: In the firing squad, some of the guns had blanks
- 9:35Speaker 2: so that people of the firing squad– could live the
- 9:38Speaker 2: rest of their lives and say, maybe it wasn't my
- 9:40Speaker 2: bullet that killed him. That would not have bothered me,
- 9:42Speaker 2: by the way. I would have wanted it to be
- 9:43Speaker 2: my bullet that killed him. I don't know what you
- 9:46Speaker 2: do with the syringe there. I don't think you have
- 9:49Speaker 2: seven syringes and people going, oh, mine contains Kool-Aid. I
- 9:53Speaker 2: do not know.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean, it's a wild thing, and you know what's
- 9:58Speaker 1: going to happen. This has just given up. all kinds
- 10:00Speaker 1: of fodder to the anti-death penalty crowd.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Of course.
- 10:03Speaker 1: They're saying it's cruel, it's terrible, it's unusual. It doesn't work.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And I'm not kidding you. When I'm talking about the
- 10:09Speaker 1: pillow over the head, why not? I mean, just.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Put her out. Because that probably is cruel and unusual.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Well, you're killing her.
- 10:18Speaker 2: No, I know.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I never.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Then why don't we just hang her from a tree
- 10:22Speaker 2: until she... I mean, there are things... I'm always... We
- 10:25Speaker 2: did hanging back in the day.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I'm always fascinated that we're worried about the method of
- 10:29Speaker 1: killing somebody.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I think that's optics. And I know what you mean.
- 10:34Speaker 2: It's all optics. I don't lie awake at night. In
- 10:36Speaker 2: view of what these people did, I don't lie awake
- 10:39Speaker 2: at night worrying about coddling them to their death. However,
- 10:43Speaker 2: as a society... We would probably like to be a
- 10:46Speaker 2: little bit high-minded about this. We're going to kill you.
- 10:50Speaker 2: But with the electric chair, it's apparently, from what I'm told,
- 10:53Speaker 2: it's like being hit by a train at a million
- 10:56Speaker 2: miles an hour. You don't feel anything. You are gone.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Lethal injection is like putting your dog to sleep, again,
- 11:03Speaker 2: or so I'm told.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Well, I did.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Firing squad's a little grisly, but, you know. Blood spatter
- 11:09Speaker 3: and all that, head blown off. I mean, that's a
- 11:11Speaker 3: little rough. I mean, look, we've all had to, us
- 11:15Speaker 3: dog lovers, we've all been there, done that. I'll never
- 11:18Speaker 3: get over, and I've done it four times in my life,
- 11:21Speaker 3: which is the worst.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Oh, man. It's terrible. And you know what, though? It's
- 11:25Speaker 1: the most peaceful, gentle, wonderful thing for an alien dog
- 11:32Speaker 1: to have that injection and they just stop moving.
- 11:34Speaker 2: And I don't think anybody's German shepherd ever sprang from
- 11:38Speaker 2: the table and went, but didn't work. I mean, so
- 11:41Speaker 2: if we can make this work, if we can bat
- 11:43Speaker 2: a thousand with this at the veterinarian's office, it would
- 11:47Speaker 2: seem like we wouldn't be dropping the ball on death row.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Do you think the online rumors that the execution squad
- 11:53Speaker 1: was made up of all females is true?
- 11:57Speaker 2: That seems like a Lindsay Clancy urban myth.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It's all over the Internet.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It's on the Internet.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I believe it. It's on the Internet.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Well, there you are.
- 12:04Speaker 1: If I saw it online, it seemed– what I also
- 12:08Speaker 1: saw was a bunch of heroes saving 175 lives on that–
- 12:13Speaker 1: fly Dubai plane. What a story. And did you see
- 12:16Speaker 1: how they called it like a tussle? A skirmish or something?
- 12:20Speaker 1: A skirmish.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It was just kind of a disagreement. They were concerned
- 12:23Speaker 2: about the altitude.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they were arguing about the temperature in the cockpit.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Dinner choices. Yeah, they didn't Heaven forbid they say jihadist
- 12:33Speaker 1: terrorists wanted to have another 9-11. No, let's not say that.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Let's dance around that story. You don't hate the news
- 12:42Speaker 1: media enough. Enough, enough, enough. And Steve Hilton clobbered Becerra
- 12:47Speaker 1: in the debate last night. We've got some highlights for
- 12:49Speaker 1: that as well.
- 12:50Speaker 2: California governor, can he win?
- 12:53Speaker 1: No, maybe not, but probably not. But there's a lot
- 12:56Speaker 1: of places where Republicans can win, and I don't think
- 12:59Speaker 1: you're optimistic enough. When I told you about the vibe
- 13:02Speaker 1: change in America, I'm telling you, Mark, go with it.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I'm totally, totally right. Listen, I'm the guy who says
- 13:09Speaker 2: that I consider it to be a thoroughly plausible notion
- 13:12Speaker 2: that the disaster does not happen. Paxton is absolutely going
- 13:15Speaker 2: to beat Tallarico. Don't know about Michelle in Minnesota. I
- 13:18Speaker 2: certainly don't know about California. But all kinds of things
- 13:20Speaker 2: are possible, and I think we are going to fend–
- 13:22Speaker 2: I think we– as you have so skillfully said, all
- 13:26Speaker 2: we have to do is show up. If we care
- 13:28Speaker 2: enough about this country, we can fend off the midterm disaster.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I believe it is possible. I'm going to pray for
- 13:32Speaker 2: that to happen.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Amen. Love it.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Love it.
- 13:35Speaker 1: See you at M & M Extra. We've got a
- 13:36Speaker 1: big day today and a big special interview tomorrow about
- 13:39Speaker 1: the admiral who was scapegoated for Pearl Harbor. So don't
- 13:43Speaker 1: miss it wherever you get your podcast, M & M Extra.
