- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37If we sow according to the flesh, we're going to reap
- 0:39according to the flesh. It's just not if, it's just When
- 0:44it's a principle. We challenge God and we disobey
- 0:49God. God will intervene because He
- 0:52loves us, just like you. As parents, your kids do things
- 0:56you don't want them to do. You just don't turn a blind eye
- 0:58and ignore them, do you? You reach into their little
- 1:02hearts and you tell them why they need to do this versus
- 1:06that. Is a loving parrot the one who
- 1:09allows their children to do whatever they want, or the one
- 1:12who creates boundaries and teaches their children how to
- 1:14behave properly? Those children who learn how to
- 1:17behave while they're young are more likely to have good
- 1:20behavior when they're grown. In today's message from the book
- 1:24of Acts, Pastor Clark reminds you that God is a good father,
- 1:29and he will also guide and correct his children so that
- 1:32they know how to live in a way that brings glory to his name.
- 1:36Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts Chapter 5 with today's edition
- 1:40of Living Waters of Grace. Don't try to make something
- 1:44happen that God isn't in. And we all have a tendency at
- 1:48times to do certain things. And lots of times we we begin to
- 1:51do ministries in our lives. And it doesn't mean just because
- 1:54we don't see anything happening right away that God isn't in it.
- 1:57Sometimes God's testing our perseverance, our dependence on
- 2:01him. Our patients are waiting upon
- 2:03the Lord. The Bible says those who wait
- 2:06upon the Lord, right? Waiting on the Lord is a hard
- 2:09thing to do. They shall renew their strength,
- 2:13they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and
- 2:16not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.
- 2:19And you may be waiting on the Lord for something in your life
- 2:22to come to pass. Don't get discouraged and don't
- 2:25get downtrodden. Whenever God gives you a vision
- 2:27and a purpose and a plan, keep on keeping on, and in time
- 2:31you'll see the fruit come forth as He blesses what it is.
- 2:35And He's called you to put your hand too.
- 2:37Don't ever give up. And so he says with great power,
- 2:42the apostles, they give this witness nor in verse 34, nor was
- 2:46there anyone among them who lacked for all who were
- 2:48possessors of lands or houses, sold them and brought the
- 2:52proceeds of the things that were sold and laid them at the
- 2:54apostles feet and they distributed to each as anyone
- 2:58had need. Now we have a Benevolent Fund
- 3:00that part of the budget is funded by what you guys give to
- 3:04be put in crisis fund mode that when people in the body in the
- 3:08community here are in dire straits, we have resources to
- 3:12help and be part of a solution to get them through a tough
- 3:15spot. But the the the early church,
- 3:18there was crisis everywhere because a lot of the people, as
- 3:22I said, were in Jerusalem and they weren't working.
- 3:24So they they needed this stuff in order to be able to survive.
- 3:28And then it says in verse 36 and Josies, who was also named
- 3:32Barnabas by the apostles, which is translated Son of
- 3:36encouragement, a Levite of the country of Cyprus having land
- 3:41sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles
- 3:44feet. Now this is the first time we
- 3:46read about this man Barnabas. Barnas ended up being an
- 3:49understudy and an associate with with the Apostle Paul and the
- 3:53missionary journeys. He has given this name.
- 3:56His name is Son of Encouragement and how important it is for all
- 4:00of us to have a Barnabas in our life.
- 4:02Someone who can come alongside of us and encourage us and
- 4:06remind us that God is with us and that no matter what we might
- 4:09be going through that this person is in your life to
- 4:13encourage you. But we want to be Barnabas to
- 4:16you guys. Pastor Lewis and myself and the
- 4:18elders. We want to be encouragers to you
- 4:20guys and to serve you and, and to thank you for your labor of
- 4:25love and the Lord and your sacrifice and your commitment to
- 4:28his work and his Kingdom. We're we're so blessed by the
- 4:32body of Christ and to watch what the Lord's doing in and through
- 4:35your lives. And so this was the beginning.
- 4:38Now, nothing's being said here that this has to be done this
- 4:42way, right? It was just done in the
- 4:45beginning for a short period of time when you study the Pastoral
- 4:51Epistles by Paul and he talks about taking up the collections
- 4:55for the church that's impoverished in Jerusalem.
- 5:00Obviously the church then began to be in multiple places after
- 5:03the persecution, small assemblies here and there and
- 5:07all of our Ephesus in different communities, Colossa, Philippi,
- 5:11all those places that Paul wrote letters to and he would send out
- 5:14a letter to letting them know that, hey, there's some brothers
- 5:17and sisters in need in such and such a place.
- 5:20And we're going to give a collection such and such will be
- 5:23around to pick it up. And we'll deliver this to the to
- 5:26the Saints in this particular area that has the difficulty.
- 5:30And that's how it has gone on since that time.
- 5:33Calvary Chapel magazine often has different outreaches and
- 5:37ministries that we participate in.
- 5:38We're alerted by certain things that are happening in the world,
- 5:41whether it's a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, whatever.
- 5:45And if every church gives something to that particular
- 5:48need, then quite a bit of work can be a accomplished.
- 5:50And that's the benefit of having a lot of people on the same page
- 5:53about crisis in the world. But anyway, this guy's an
- 5:57encourager and he took his asset and he invested it in what was
- 6:01happening in early stages of the church.
- 6:04Now we continue on this and what happens is I don't think there
- 6:07was any accolades and, and Barnabas certainly wasn't
- 6:10bragging about what he did. He probably didn't want anybody
- 6:13to know about it. But it's written here that
- 6:15everybody does know what he did. And so there's other people in
- 6:18the assembly there to think, well, boy, if I can make some
- 6:21kind of movement that I'm doing something extraordinary, then
- 6:25maybe I'll have a following or maybe I'll get glory, or maybe
- 6:29I'll get whatever. You know, it's, it's, it's very
- 6:32delicate in regard to what we do when we invest in the Kingdom of
- 6:37God. There's a church group that I
- 6:39guess puts it in the bulletin, the names of the families and
- 6:42who who gives, you know, you guys probably know what I'm
- 6:44talking about. That's not the way it's to be
- 6:46done. Bible says the left hand should
- 6:49know what the right hand gives. You know, so you know we give
- 6:52unto the Lord privately in the boxes or online or however we we
- 6:56do it. And we do it for the glory of
- 6:58God, not for any kind of recognition.
- 7:00None of us want recognition, but yet God does bless us when we
- 7:06sow into His work. This is something that is very
- 7:10important. All of us should be tuned into
- 7:13investing in things that last for eternity.
- 7:16So what happens here? There's this guy Ananias and his
- 7:19wife Sapphira. I don't know what possessed them
- 7:23to behave this way or to act this way, but this is a really
- 7:26strange, strange story here. They're obviously Christians.
- 7:30They're the Holy Spirit's in them.
- 7:31They're part of this new move of God.
- 7:34It was hard to be a hypocrite in the early stages of the church.
- 7:37It was so pure that you would stick out like a sore thumb if
- 7:41you were a phony, right? And this is what begins to
- 7:43happen here in this particular teaching.
- 7:46A certain man named Ananias with Sapphira his wife sold a
- 7:50possession and he kept back part of the proceeds.
- 7:54His wife also being aware of it and brought a certain part, laid
- 7:58it at the apostles feet. So they made a determination to
- 8:03give whatever it was that they were compelled to give, but
- 8:08somehow they were portraying the fact that they were giving
- 8:11everything and they weren't. Now, no one first of all told
- 8:14him they needed to do this. This is what they were compelled
- 8:18to do. But for some reason they were
- 8:20using deception that they didn't need to even use.
- 8:25And it became very evident to Peter, this is called the word
- 8:29of knowledge or the Word of wisdom.
- 8:31Peter's given insight into something is happening in
- 8:34someone's conscience or life that this isn't right and he
- 8:37calls them out on it, right? And so Peter says, Ananias, why
- 8:42has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep
- 8:47back part of the price of the land for yourself?
- 8:51Now, it wasn't wrong for him to keep back the price, but the the
- 8:54problem was he was saying he was giving it all and he wasn't.
- 8:58That's the problem. And so the gift became corrupt.
- 9:01It wasn't used for God's glory. There was a manipulation here
- 9:05and Ananias and Sapphira's life probably wanting some kind of
- 9:09recognition of looking more spiritual than they really were
- 9:12or whatever. And so Peter says, why has Satan
- 9:15filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part
- 9:19of the price of the land for yourself?
- 9:20Question mark while remain was it not your own?
- 9:24In other words, this was your asset and you were free to do
- 9:29with it whatever you wanted to do with it.
- 9:32This wasn't a commandment to these people that they needed to
- 9:35lay everything at the apostles feet.
- 9:38And so after it was sold, was it not in your own control?
- 9:43In other words, you still had control over what it was you
- 9:46were doing. Why have you conceived this
- 9:48thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to
- 9:50God. Now when God makes a particular
- 9:54point of something in the Bible and, and, and shows us something
- 9:57like this, it it was meant in that early stage of the church
- 10:01to be a warning to the body, to not be deceptive, to not lie, to
- 10:06not be a con artist, to not live in wolf of hypocrisy.
- 10:11We need to be who we are and let the chips fall where they may.
- 10:15We don't need to be trying to make ourselves something we're
- 10:18not. We just need to be normal,
- 10:21average, down to earth people, humble, loving God and serving
- 10:26God and doing what it is that God's called us to do in
- 10:30obedience to Him, right? Not in obedience to anybody
- 10:34else, but to obedience to the Lord.
- 10:38That's who we're going to give an account to one day.
- 10:40But somehow Ananias and Sapphira were trying to, I don't know,
- 10:44get some kind of influence in this, in this assembly.
- 10:47Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed
- 10:51his last. In other words, he died great in
- 10:53the presence of the church and the people.
- 10:56So great fear came upon all those who heard these things,
- 11:01and the young men arose and wrapped him up and carried him
- 11:06out and they buried him. Shocking that this occurred.
- 11:12Now one commentator said, you know, in today's modern church,
- 11:18we're singing this worship song, take my life and let it be holy,
- 11:23only used by the take my silver and my gold.
- 11:27You know, in other words, the allegiance of my life is to you.
- 11:31And so we can sing that song and meanwhile deny everything it
- 11:35says, though this is my life and what I have is mine, right?
- 11:38It's a wonder we aren't all wiped out on a Sunday.
- 11:41Don't sing that song unless the Lord ready for us to sing it.
- 11:45But you know, and what was the other song, Lord be Thou my
- 11:51vision? That's that's another powerful
- 11:54song. And and you read the lyrics, so
- 11:56you hear the lyrics on that. You have to say to yourself, am
- 12:00I really live in this right now? Is this what I really believe?
- 12:05And there's been some songs that are played that I don't sing
- 12:08them because I'm just not quite there 100% the way I need to be.
- 12:11It's not the song. Isn't nothing wrong with the
- 12:13song, but I'm convicted by what the song saying and I want that
- 12:18lyric to be real in my life. I don't want to fake it right
- 12:22And the Lords concern was when he said about people, he said
- 12:26these people worship me with their lips, but their heart is
- 12:29far from me. May that not be the case here at
- 12:31Calvary Chapel, that when we worship God, we worship Him in
- 12:35spirit and in truth, that we are loving him.
- 12:38We are repenting of things in our lives that need to change.
- 12:42And, and so we're open to the work and the conviction of the
- 12:44Holy Spirit as opposed to acting like we got it all together and
- 12:48we're just lip synching things and really not believe in them.
- 12:51Right. So then Anais, you know, after
- 12:53he falls down, he's buried. He didn't have time to give his
- 12:57wife a heads up. He didn't have a phone to text.
- 12:59Hey, they're on to us. Honey, whatever you do, don't
- 13:02you know it's too late? There's no way of communicating
- 13:05this. She's going in naively.
- 13:07About 3 hours later, when his wife came in, not knowing what
- 13:10had happened, Peter answered her, Tell me whether you sold
- 13:13the land for so much. And she said yes for so much.
- 13:17Then Peter said to her, How is it that you have agreed together
- 13:21to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have
- 13:25buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you
- 13:29out. Then immediately she fell down
- 13:32at his feet, and breathed her last.
- 13:33And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her
- 13:37out, buried her by her husband. So great fear came upon all the
- 13:43church, and upon all those who heard these things.
- 13:48The chastening hand of the Lord in our lives is sobering.
- 13:53We've all been chastened by the Lord.
- 13:55If we're his, we're disciplined by God, not because he's mad at
- 13:59us or, you know, particularly angry.
- 14:01He's, he's sad and he knows that if we don't make amends to the
- 14:05way we're living, we're going to cause a bad testimony to occur
- 14:09in our lives. And we're also going to cause
- 14:11problems in the home and the family work everywhere we go.
- 14:15We're going to be a train wreck waiting to occur.
- 14:18So the chastening hand of the Lord is to sober us and to cause
- 14:23us to reflect on where we are in knowing where we need to be.
- 14:29When the Lord chastens us, the Bible tells us He does it
- 14:33because he loves us, and it doesn't seem to be pleasant when
- 14:39we're being chastened. The discipline of God, however,
- 14:43he doesn't. In your life, it could be a
- 14:45health issue. It could be a financial issue,
- 14:47it could be a family issue. It could be a work issue.
- 14:50You just know that what's happening in your life at the
- 14:52present moment is not based on anything other than God catching
- 14:57up with you about something He's been talking to you about that
- 15:00you haven't been listening. Anybody understand?
- 15:03You ever been through that? You know, two people have.
- 15:06OK, yeah, we all have. So it says it's not pleasant for
- 15:12the present time, but if we're exercised by it, meaning we're
- 15:17responding to it, it'll yield the peaceable fruit of
- 15:19righteousness. We get beyond it.
- 15:21And God's, there's peace in our life again and there and there's
- 15:25unity and there there's blessings.
- 15:27And so. But in the early church when
- 15:29this happened, this put fear in the lives of the people.
- 15:33Some churches, they have testimony times and we probably
- 15:36should have a night once a month and we just have food and
- 15:38testimony. What's the Lord been up to in
- 15:40our life? Well, let me tell you where I've
- 15:43been and where God has me, you know, And all of a sudden people
- 15:45are like, wow, you know, and then all of a sudden people
- 15:48start fearing the mighty hand of God in intervening and dealing
- 15:52in lives because of inappropriate behavior, actions
- 15:56or activity. And whenever I hear a story
- 15:59about someone that did a particular thing and the
- 16:02consequence of it, if I'm involved in that kind of same
- 16:06thing, one or two things happen. I'm a fool and I don't listen.
- 16:10And I'm set myself up for the discipline, right?
- 16:13And the chastening or immediately I say, Lord, have
- 16:16mercy on me. Have mercy on me, O God.
- 16:19So the church is supposed to be continually being refined by the
- 16:23Spirit of God, washed in the power of God, in the cleansing
- 16:27blood of the Lord, so that we're being made holy as he's holy.
- 16:31The Lord desires his church to be holy, and he wants us as his
- 16:35people to be holy as He's holy. And so he does this stuff by the
- 16:39work of his Spirit. So when you read this section of
- 16:42Scripture, you might be shocked if you never read it or never
- 16:45heard about it, but it's in the Bible to the sober us to
- 16:48understand that God is not mocked, that whatever we sow, we
- 16:52we reap. If we sow according to the
- 16:55flesh, we're going to reap according to the flesh.
- 16:57It's just not if, it's just when it's a principle.
- 17:03We challenge God and we disobey God, God will intervene because
- 17:08he loves us just like you as parents, your kids do things you
- 17:12don't want them to do. You just don't turn a blind eye
- 17:14and ignore them, do you? You reach into their little
- 17:18hearts and you tell them why they need to do this versus
- 17:22that. And there needs to be more of
- 17:25that, I'm sure going on in every home in America in these days
- 17:28because of what kids are getting involved in, what they're being
- 17:31impacted by is the world, the Pagan world.
- 17:35And the more they're impacted by the Pagan world, the more
- 17:38they'll become like that world, participating in the same things
- 17:43that that world does. And so as a people of God, we
- 17:47need to pray for the kids the next door and the kids in the
- 17:50ministry and the youth that the word of God who influence them
- 17:53so that they want to have Christ supreme in their hearts and
- 17:57their lives. And that's the work of God and
- 18:00all of us. And so, and through the hands of
- 18:03the apostles in verse 12, many signs and wonders were done
- 18:06among the people, and they were all with 1 accord in Solomon's
- 18:10porch. Again, they had no physical
- 18:12facility to lease or to rent or to own at this time.
- 18:15They were borrowing this space, yet none of the rest dare join
- 18:19them. But the people esteemed them
- 18:21highly, and believers were increasingly added to the Lord,
- 18:24multitudes of both men and women, so that they brought the
- 18:28sick out into the streets and they laid them on beds and
- 18:31couches that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall
- 18:35on some of them. Also multitude gathered from the
- 18:38surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those
- 18:42who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all
- 18:46healed. Now there was no power in the
- 18:48shadow of Peter. Peter made it very clear when
- 18:51that lame man was healed. And why Look on us as though and
- 18:55by our own power we've done this work.
- 18:57It's in the name of Jesus. Jesus Christ did this healing,
- 19:03and so the power of God was on the lives of the apostles of God
- 19:06at this time in such a great way that there was these magnificent
- 19:10times of healing and the people were desperate.
- 19:13They were bringing everyone they loved, every everyone they cared
- 19:16about to this environment where they could be brought and be
- 19:20made well. What's sad is that so many
- 19:23people that were healed and made well, this got well but didn't
- 19:26follow Jesus. As we read in the Scriptures,
- 19:29the 12 lepers, you know, there was one that returned, right?
- 19:33What happened to the other 11? And so people don't get saved by
- 19:38miracles. Miracles are a testimony of of
- 19:40the greatness of God. But it's the gospel of Jesus
- 19:44Christ that saves souls. The preaching of the cross.
- 19:48The gospel is the power of God and salvation to everyone that
- 19:52believes. Healing is wonderful if you've
- 19:55been healed. I've been healed at different
- 19:57times in my life, but I eventually I'm going to die,
- 19:59right? Lazarus was healed, but
- 20:02eventually he had to die. He had to leave this earth.
- 20:05And so healing is temporal, but the gospel is eternal.
- 20:09Continue to read ahead. As you read ahead, you're,
- 20:11you're prepared to to think a little bit more about these
- 20:15things before I teach. But in these days where there's
- 20:19so much going on in the world, it's not by coincidence that
- 20:23we're in the book of the Acts and we're learning, all of us,
- 20:26that we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in a greater
- 20:29degree, all of us. So I want to pray specifically
- 20:33for God the Holy Spirit to encounter each of us in a very
- 20:38powerful way to help us to see what it is that God wants us to
- 20:42see and that we would become more and more like God has
- 20:46created us to be. Father God, we thank you.
- 20:52God the Holy Spirit, You're the most neglected part of the
- 20:58Trinity. So often we talk about the
- 21:01Father God, we talk about the Son, the Lord Jesus, and so
- 21:05often we are remiss in understanding that you also are
- 21:09called in Scripture God the Holy Spirit.
- 21:13So forgive us, Lord, for at times of quenching this precious
- 21:18person, the Spirit of God, of grieving him and hurting him by
- 21:25our own willfulness, of wanting our way instead of your way.
- 21:29Lord, He's gentle, the Holy Spirit, You tell us The fruit of
- 21:35the Spirit is love, that agape love and joy and peace and
- 21:40long-suffering and gentleness and goodness and meekness and
- 21:43self-control. This is what we want in our
- 21:47lives, Lord, and we know that the fullness of the Spirit comes
- 21:53by the filling of the Spirit and by surrender to the Spirit.
- 21:58And so, Lord, we pray for our church family, our church body,
- 22:01those online, those in the building today, that today would
- 22:05be a new day, a fresh day of encounter, of discovering this
- 22:10wonderful person, God the Holy Spirit, to have a relationship
- 22:14with the Holy Spirit, to cooperate with the Holy Spirit,
- 22:18and to be LED of the Spirit. You tell us that the children of
- 22:22God are led by the Spirit of Godfather.
- 22:27We pray that in the days ahead we would experience more and
- 22:30more of your leading in the church and the activities of
- 22:34your church, Lord, and the ministries as you raise people
- 22:37up to serve you in different capacities and different
- 22:40calling. That your hands would be upon
- 22:42those who have committed to certain aspects of what it is
- 22:46they believe you created them for the people that come that
- 22:49are still maybe thinking about what is it?
- 22:52That is my gift. What is it that God wants to
- 22:54use? Holy Spirit?
- 22:56You would speak to them about that and encourage them to step
- 22:59forward and what it is you might be calling them to.
- 23:03We thank you, Lord, that in this world today that things seem at
- 23:08times to be spinning out of control, but from your vantage
- 23:12point, they're completely under your control.
- 23:16And Lord, you teach us as we study the Bible that the way we
- 23:19find our way through in this life is by being men and women
- 23:24who are LED of the Holy Spirit and men and women who are filled
- 23:27by the Spirit. Lord, convict us where we need
- 23:32to be convicted. Challenge us and draw us closer
- 23:35to yourself so that we can be more like you.
- 23:38Jesus, we know it only happens by the work of the Spirit.
- 23:43So we praise you today for what you've given us and what we've
- 23:45received. And you can walk out of here
- 23:48today knowing that you are with us and that we are filled afresh
- 23:53to do whatever it is you've called us to do.
- 23:57Thanks for joining us on today's edition of Living Waters of
- 24:00Grace, a ministry of Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
- 24:04Today, Pastor Clark is teaching about the book of Acts.
- 24:07And as we learn more about Acts, it becomes clear that the early
- 24:10church didn't miss a single opportunity to share the gospel.
- 24:15In nearly every chapter, you see apostles like Peter and Paul
- 24:18stepping into conversations, crowds, and crises with
- 24:22boldness, ready to proclaim the name of Jesus.
- 24:26Their example challenges us to consider how we might step into
- 24:30gospel moments in our own lives. What doors might God open this
- 24:35week for you to speak truth, offer hope, or live out your
- 24:38faith in a way that points others to Him?
- 24:41The story of Acts reminds us we are part of the same mission.
- 24:44Today, let's live with eyes open and hearts ready to respond.
- 24:49We hope you are challenged by today's message.
