- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome, Mom's Welcome inside the Mom's Club. I'm your host,
- 0:04Speaker 1: Monica Samuels, and I'm here with my lovely co host
- 0:08Speaker 1: and very good friend, Julie Orchid.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hi Monica, Julie, I am so glad you look sounds
- 0:15Speaker 2: so sarcastic. We're like, Hi, No, you.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Look really, I'm not no, I'm not sounding surprised. You
- 0:21Speaker 1: look great.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I know sometimes I shower.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Do you mind till you say, have a baseball hat on.
- 0:28Speaker 2: That's how I rolled into town yesterday, a.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Great hat that I'm jealous of. I want it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Texas is for lovers, but as my you know, the
- 0:36Speaker 3: bonus of coming to LA's I get to see my
- 0:38Speaker 3: oldest daughter. Last night, she rolled in and she's like,
- 0:42Speaker 3: it's Virginia is for lovers. I was like, not today.
- 0:46Speaker 3: So we got that hat at Austin City Limits. It's
- 0:48Speaker 3: pretty fantastic.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Jealous you got to go to that. I didn't go
- 0:50Speaker 1: this year.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Oh well there's always next year.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But you and I are going to go to Mumford
- 0:54Speaker 1: and Sons. We are concerts.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Absolutely, I am super super white.
- 0:59Speaker 1: That's to be so watching me dance and you know,
- 1:02Speaker 1: having a big time.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm celebrating. Yeah, you want to know.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm excited her share with our audience because we'll tell
- 1:11Speaker 1: them this, tell them the story, and then tell them the.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I don't need to tell a long story, but I
- 1:14Speaker 3: will be celebrating. This has to do with our guests
- 1:17Speaker 3: today as well. I'm celebrating a clean mammogram six months
- 1:23Speaker 3: after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So we're very thrill. I'm so so so yeah.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I mean that's a weird feeling too, though, because you
- 1:33Speaker 3: have a little bit of survivor's guilt when you go
- 1:36Speaker 3: through something and then things are working out for you.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I mean, you can't help it.
- 1:42Speaker 3: When you walk in and you see a lot of
- 1:44Speaker 3: people that are very, very sick, your perspective changes. I
- 1:48Speaker 3: have a lot of friends have been through it and
- 1:51Speaker 3: supported me, and you know, I'm super excited that today
- 1:54Speaker 3: we get to talk about a little bit of that
- 1:56Speaker 3: because the last eight months have been totally different than
- 2:01Speaker 3: what I had planned, and it's you know, it's it's awkward,
- 2:06Speaker 3: it's just a little bit weird. But I'm super thrilled
- 2:09Speaker 3: to promote good health.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I am too. I think this is a great, great
- 2:14Speaker 1: subject and guests and so let me without further ado,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I want to introduce her.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Oh you are right, let's shoe.
- 2:19Speaker 1: She She began her career in public relations, but later
- 2:22Speaker 1: joined her husband, a cancer survivor, in the creation of
- 2:25Speaker 1: Survivor Fitness Foundation, which focuses on the positive effects of
- 2:30Speaker 1: health and wellness for cancer survivors. Please welcome, Meg Grunky,
- 2:36Speaker 1: Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I'm so thrilled that you're here. And this is such
- 2:43Speaker 1: a great thing that you're doing. You know, as with
- 2:46Speaker 1: my father in law worked at M D Anderson as
- 2:48Speaker 1: a radiologist for years, so I saw my mother is
- 2:51Speaker 1: a cancer survivor of a very very rare form of cancer,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and so I got to see that that side of it.
- 3:00Speaker 1: But there's there's another side to it, and that is
- 3:02Speaker 1: when you're like Julie and you've gotten a good Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I didn't get a lot of questions about the treatment,
- 3:10Speaker 3: what happens afterwards, like how are you moving on? How
- 3:13Speaker 3: are we going to do life after? You know, you
- 3:16Speaker 3: feel to the gate, you got a race and get healthy,
- 3:20Speaker 3: and then you don't really hear much about afterwards what
- 3:23Speaker 3: are you going to do to keep that up exactly?
- 3:25Speaker 1: And so your husband Aaron is a cancer survivor. From
- 3:29Speaker 1: one understand, he had testicular cancer and he was twenty
- 3:33Speaker 1: three and without a couple of years after we were hurt.
- 3:39Speaker 1: We were told surgeries, treatment, but then you got to
- 3:44Speaker 1: the other side of it and then explained us what
- 3:46Speaker 1: happened and what inspired him to start Survivor Fitness Foundation.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely, And Julia, I do want to say congratulations
- 3:54Speaker 4: on a green bill of health. I know that that's
- 3:57Speaker 4: a lot the anxiety that comes around those regular checkups
- 4:02Speaker 4: and even though your doctors tell you that everything will
- 4:04Speaker 4: be fine, that doesn't make those appointments much easier. Oftentimes.
- 4:09Speaker 4: I'm so glad to hear that, and so glad you're
- 4:12Speaker 4: hopefully on the other side of things. So but yeah, So,
- 4:16Speaker 4: my husband, Aaron was diagnosed with an aggressive form of
- 4:18Speaker 4: testicular cancer at the young age of twenty one, went
- 4:22Speaker 4: through about two years of treatments and surgeries, and when
- 4:26Speaker 4: he was done with treatment about the age of twenty three,
- 4:29Speaker 4: he was told, you know you're healthy, now go live life.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You're fine. Just put cancer in the roo view mirror.
- 4:35Speaker 4: And he had gained a lot of weight, lost a
- 4:38Speaker 4: lot of strength, and really struggled mentally and emotionally with
- 4:42Speaker 4: what came text and when his doctors were saying go live, life,
- 4:45Speaker 4: move forward, he kind of stopped and said, what does
- 4:48Speaker 4: that mean? I have no idea what that means, and
- 4:52Speaker 4: really struggled with what that looked like for him, especially
- 4:55Speaker 4: as a young adult, especially as someone who said thought
- 4:58Speaker 4: and thought, you know, like, hey, I should be able
- 5:00Speaker 4: to figure this out on my own, but unfortunately he couldn't,
- 5:04Speaker 4: and he really struggled with that for a few years,
- 5:07Speaker 4: and luckily, by kind of happenstance, he was speaking with
- 5:10Speaker 4: a trainer one day about what he had been through
- 5:14Speaker 4: and what he was struggling with, and that trainer kind
- 5:17Speaker 4: of took it upon himself to help Aaron figure out
- 5:20Speaker 4: what life after cancer should look like, both physically, nutritionally,
- 5:24Speaker 4: and really that led into the mental and emotional part
- 5:28Speaker 4: as well. So he was kind of given the tools
- 5:30Speaker 4: to regain his health and that's where the idea was,
- 5:33Speaker 4: where survivor fitness was born. Aaron had struggled for a
- 5:36Speaker 4: number of years with really what to do, and when
- 5:41Speaker 4: he started kind of putting these pieces together and talking
- 5:44Speaker 4: to other you know, his doctor about it and some other
- 5:47Speaker 4: cancer survivors that he knew. Everybody shared the same sentiment
- 5:51Speaker 4: of yeah, I struggled with that too. I had no
- 5:54Speaker 4: idea what to do? You know, no one told me
- 5:56Speaker 4: what to do. How was I supposed to move forward?
- 5:59Speaker 4: You know? I well had brain fog? How do I
- 6:01Speaker 4: address all these things? And while they might have heard
- 6:04Speaker 4: go work out or you know, eat healthy, they weren't
- 6:06Speaker 4: really sure what to do or how to do that.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And so that's where the idea for survivor Fitness was born.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And so we started that a number of years ago
- 6:15Speaker 4: at this point, to help cancer survivors of all a date,
- 6:19Speaker 4: adult age ranges, all fitness levels, and all types of
- 6:22Speaker 4: cancer regained their health and wellness following treatment.
- 6:25Speaker 1: How how old was he when he got the idea?
- 6:27Speaker 1: You know, I think because it's a pretty bold thing
- 6:29Speaker 1: to say, I'm going to start a foundation.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, how old?
- 6:34Speaker 4: He was about twenty five when he came home one
- 6:36Speaker 4: day and said, I, like, we had talked about it,
- 6:39Speaker 4: and he he's about twenty five. And then fast forward
- 6:43Speaker 4: a couple of years, he kind of molds on the
- 6:45Speaker 4: idea a little bit, and he was getting his NBA
- 6:48Speaker 4: had the opportunity to do an independent study class and
- 6:52Speaker 4: wrote up a business plan on this and talked to
- 6:56Speaker 4: some trainers in the area we were we were in
- 7:00Speaker 4: Nashville at the time, and he talked to some trainers
- 7:03Speaker 4: and they said, this is a great idea. Talk to
- 7:04Speaker 4: the physicians. This is a great idea. No one's doing this.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And so he came home one day and said, I
- 7:10Speaker 4: filed the paperwork and I was like, for what. So
- 7:14Speaker 4: that's where it started. And I was like, oh, okay,
- 7:16Speaker 4: we're really doing this. But it is It has been
- 7:19Speaker 4: such an obviously great idea that he had, and you know,
- 7:24Speaker 4: we're just really fortunate to see so many lives impacted
- 7:27Speaker 4: through such the you know, simple actions of fitness and
- 7:31Speaker 4: nutrition and mental wellness.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So if you have a survivor and somebody comes to
- 7:35Speaker 3: your foundation and they want to sign up, what does
- 7:38Speaker 3: that look like?
- 7:39Speaker 4: How long is it?
- 7:40Speaker 3: You know, people would probably have questions, you know, how
- 7:43Speaker 3: do I get on my feet again?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Give me an idea of what that looks like.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, So our program, so, as I mentioned, we had
- 7:50Speaker 4: the fitness, nutrition, and mental wellness program. Those can all
- 7:53Speaker 4: be done in conjunction or independently of each other. Given
- 7:57Speaker 4: the fact that a lot of cancer survivors when they're
- 7:59Speaker 4: done which treatment, are really starting to kind of try
- 8:02Speaker 4: and get back in the swing of things, and so
- 8:03Speaker 4: we certainly don't want to make piece programs on more
- 8:07Speaker 4: burdensome than they should be helpful, if you will. And
- 8:11Speaker 4: so for the fitness program, it's twenty four sessions one
- 8:15Speaker 4: on one with a personal trainer over the course ideally
- 8:18Speaker 4: of twelve weeks, so that's two sessions per week. Everything
- 8:22Speaker 4: is one on one with that trainer, and that trainer
- 8:25Speaker 4: really customizes your fitness program to you. So we've had
- 8:29Speaker 4: eighteen year olds come through the program, and we've had
- 8:31Speaker 4: eighty eight year olds come through the program, and so
- 8:34Speaker 4: clearly they don't need the same thing when it comes
- 8:36Speaker 4: to recovery. And so that's where that customization and individualized
- 8:40Speaker 4: support comes in and really working with people on their needs.
- 8:45Speaker 4: And then on the nutrition side, our participants received three
- 8:49Speaker 4: to five sessions with a dietician and typically that is
- 8:52Speaker 4: done with the fitness because obviously those go well hand
- 8:55Speaker 4: in hand. And then for mental wellness support, our participants
- 8:59Speaker 4: receive two three months of weekly therapy, meaning that they
- 9:03Speaker 4: can go every week for three months, they can go
- 9:07Speaker 4: every other week for three months. We really let them,
- 9:10Speaker 4: the participant and their therapists decide that together and really
- 9:14Speaker 4: make the best protocol for them at that point. So
- 9:18Speaker 4: when someone comes into the program, we have an intake
- 9:20Speaker 4: process that we go through and between our program coordinator
- 9:25Speaker 4: and that individual decide the best course of action for them.
- 9:27Speaker 4: And I should also mention that all these programs that
- 9:31Speaker 4: we do provide were fortunate to have great support of
- 9:35Speaker 4: the community and the communities. We work with numbers of businesses,
- 9:40Speaker 4: local businesses as well as businesses across the nation who
- 9:43Speaker 4: support Survivor Fitness to make these programs available at no
- 9:46Speaker 4: cost to anyone who comes through.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Wow, and do the do doctors make referrals to you all?
- 9:53Speaker 1: Or like, how does that usually happen? Because we want
- 9:58Speaker 1: the whole We want the whole country. The reason you're
- 10:00Speaker 1: on here today is we want the whole country to
- 10:02Speaker 1: find out about Survivor Fitness Foundation. Not a lot of
- 10:05Speaker 1: people know about it and it's now it's really based
- 10:09Speaker 1: in Tennessee for the most part. Now it's virtual. You
- 10:12Speaker 1: can get it anywhere from what you what I understand, So,
- 10:15Speaker 1: what's the typical way that you identified you have you
- 10:20Speaker 1: have on colleges that you work with generally at this
- 10:22Speaker 1: point and they refer or how does that happen?
- 10:24Speaker 4: Yeah, as you mentioned, to our program. So we do
- 10:27Speaker 4: have in person locations that we work with fitness wise
- 10:30Speaker 4: throughout the state of Tennessee, which is where we started
- 10:34Speaker 4: and where we reside now, but we also provide virtual
- 10:37Speaker 4: programming to anyone across the country and that is actually
- 10:41Speaker 4: our largest growing market, if you will. Survivor Fitness is
- 10:45Speaker 4: a unique program in the fact of kind of what
- 10:48Speaker 4: we do with the individualized support. So we do we
- 10:51Speaker 4: have physicians on colleges, surgical centers, nurses who refer their
- 10:56Speaker 4: patients to our program all across the country and we've
- 10:59Speaker 4: been fortunate to grow in that aspect. But it's important
- 11:02Speaker 4: to note that you do not have to have a
- 11:05Speaker 4: doctor's referral to apply to be part of Survivor Fitness,
- 11:08Speaker 4: So anyone can hop on our website at Survivorfitness dot
- 11:11Speaker 4: org apply for the program. It's a quick application, just
- 11:15Speaker 4: asking kind of what you've been through, where you are now,
- 11:17Speaker 4: where you've been, probably you know, five to seven minutes
- 11:21Speaker 4: of an application, and then we set up the intake
- 11:23Speaker 4: process from there. We always circle back and get medical
- 11:27Speaker 4: clearance forms from the physicians and the surgeons. Just really
- 11:29Speaker 4: again dependent on the individual, but no anyone can come
- 11:34Speaker 4: to our website and apply for these programs, and yes
- 11:38Speaker 4: we do want everyone to apply. We have the ability
- 11:42Speaker 4: to support numbers more than we are at this moment,
- 11:46Speaker 4: and we're very fortunate we've been growing and growing. But
- 11:50Speaker 4: you know, the thought of any cancer survivor sitting at
- 11:54Speaker 4: home alone and wondering what do I be, like, how
- 11:58Speaker 4: do I move forward? That's hard and that's kind of
- 12:02Speaker 4: devastating and why we want to work so hard to
- 12:04Speaker 4: make sure that people know about the brokens that we provide.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I mean, first of all, your website is an incredible resource.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I can tell you that, you know, I have taken
- 12:13Speaker 3: the deep dive on it and it has so much information.
- 12:16Speaker 3: You are providing survivor stories on there and what's happened
- 12:19Speaker 3: with you know, some of the people who have applied,
- 12:22Speaker 3: and I can just personally tell you that not really
- 12:26Speaker 3: great at asking for help.
- 12:28Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I was like to my daughter, just roll me in
- 12:30Speaker 3: the door. I'll be fine the next day, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 3: and get going. But you know, there's so much that
- 12:37Speaker 3: you go through, like I told you the plastic surgeon.
- 12:40Speaker 3: People called me, They're like, we'll give you a ride,
- 12:43Speaker 3: and I was like, what, Like, I mean, you're not
- 12:45Speaker 3: even thinking like that. And then the mental part of
- 12:48Speaker 3: it is depending on what you have. And I'm just
- 12:50Speaker 3: going to say this because a lot of people go
- 12:52Speaker 3: through it. Your body completely changes. And I'm only speaking
- 12:57Speaker 3: about my own breast cancer her diagnosis, and it's mentally
- 13:02Speaker 3: really something that you need to process. And the mental
- 13:06Speaker 3: part of this survivor fitness is, I think is huge.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Would I would absolutely agree because I know with my mom.
- 13:14Speaker 1: She had she had a form of cancer was called
- 13:17Speaker 1: epithelioid hamanngeolite, theoma. It's the it's the cancer of innerlining
- 13:22Speaker 1: of the blood vessels, and they only diagnose it five
- 13:25Speaker 1: hundred cases in the world every year. Most people die
- 13:30Speaker 1: within three years. She survived. Hers went away by itself.
- 13:34Speaker 1: She became a case study at MD Anderson and it
- 13:36Speaker 1: was a whole big thing. But I know mentally, and
- 13:38Speaker 1: she's now eighty seven, she was diagnosed when she was
- 13:41Speaker 1: fifty six. It's hard once you've had that something like
- 13:45Speaker 1: that that's so rare and so always fatal, I think
- 13:48Speaker 1: it's hard to get past that point mentally and emotionally.
- 13:52Speaker 2: To tell your parents.
- 13:52Speaker 1: It's a lot of PTSD that goes a lovel for her,
- 13:56Speaker 1: like every year, like okay, is this coming back? She
- 13:59Speaker 1: had to keep going back, came back to be tested
- 14:01Speaker 1: over and over again, you know, is lots of cat scans,
- 14:04Speaker 1: which took forever for the doctors to finally say, you know,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you are in remission and you don't have to come back.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So I'm I'm glad to hear that you added that
- 14:12Speaker 1: mental health piece because that was a lot on her.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We know that it was a lot on us as
- 14:18Speaker 1: a family too, which reminds me too, do you add
- 14:20Speaker 1: the family into this process too, because families go through
- 14:24Speaker 1: a lot as well. Do they have is our resources
- 14:26Speaker 1: that help them?
- 14:27Speaker 4: We do not. Most there's a couple of different organizations
- 14:31Speaker 4: who are providing family support specifically for children and as
- 14:36Speaker 4: well that they can kind of different coping mechanisms that
- 14:39Speaker 4: they can really tap into if they if their parents
- 14:43Speaker 4: is diagnosed. So we do not at this point. What
- 14:46Speaker 4: we do love to see though, is when you know
- 14:50Speaker 4: mom or dad starts working out, maybe for the first
- 14:53Speaker 4: time or ever, that these kids dependent on their age
- 14:57Speaker 4: right coming along with them and working out alongside of
- 14:59Speaker 4: them once they get to the point that they can
- 15:01Speaker 4: do so, or maybe they sign up for a five
- 15:03Speaker 4: k together, or they do something that they've never done before.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I mean, we see a lot of parents who, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 4: they can't even play basketball with their kids. They can't
- 15:14Speaker 4: you know, run down the soccer field with their kids
- 15:16Speaker 4: because of potentially what they've been through, or the concerns
- 15:20Speaker 4: around potentially you know, some of the surgeries or treatments,
- 15:23Speaker 4: or maybe they get more winded more easily. There's so
- 15:26Speaker 4: much there that really having someone walk beside you and
- 15:30Speaker 4: help you understand like it's okay, Like you're not the
- 15:34Speaker 4: only one who's had this issue, right, And I think
- 15:38Speaker 4: a lot of time cancer survivors feel that way. I'm
- 15:41Speaker 4: not a cancer survivor myself, so I can't say that
- 15:45Speaker 4: I felt that way. But all the participants who we
- 15:47Speaker 4: speak too often say like, I'm sure I'm the only
- 15:50Speaker 4: one who's gained weight, and we step back and say, actually, no,
- 15:53Speaker 4: like a lot of our participants gained weight because of
- 15:56Speaker 4: the medications that they've been on, because of the seroids
- 15:59Speaker 4: or dependent on you know, just all sorts of things,
- 16:03Speaker 4: particularly a lot of breast cancer survivors looking at really
- 16:06Speaker 4: what that proper balance is between nutrition and fitness as
- 16:09Speaker 4: they come out. And you know, I'm not a physician,
- 16:12Speaker 4: but I can speak to what I've seen and the
- 16:14Speaker 4: research that I've read, and it really is such an
- 16:19Speaker 4: important factor for people to know that like they're not
- 16:22Speaker 4: on the right, that they are not the only person
- 16:26Speaker 4: sitting there wondering, you know, how do I do this?
- 16:29Speaker 4: Like that my doctor says I should work out, but
- 16:31Speaker 4: like I've ever been to a gym before, where do
- 16:33Speaker 4: I even start? Or my doctor says I should work out,
- 16:36Speaker 4: Like I used to be able to pick up twenty
- 16:38Speaker 4: five pounds and now I can barely pick up like
- 16:40Speaker 4: the can to open it and you know, make myself
- 16:43Speaker 4: a can of soup. And so it's really hard either way.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I mean, we see people struggle with this all the
- 16:49Speaker 4: time of what to do and how to do it,
- 16:52Speaker 4: and then you think adding your family into that, or
- 16:55Speaker 4: adding the workplace into it, depending on what you do
- 16:57Speaker 4: for a living, and it really just comes piles for
- 17:01Speaker 4: these individuals to try and figure it out, and instead
- 17:04Speaker 4: of being able to move forward, they just sit stagnant
- 17:08Speaker 4: because they don't even know where to start. And that's
- 17:10Speaker 4: what we really want to help people do is come
- 17:13Speaker 4: alongside them and show them it's just one foot in
- 17:16Speaker 4: front of the other and having someone walk beside you
- 17:19Speaker 4: and really show you that direction is critical and changing
- 17:23Speaker 4: really that trajectory of your health and wellness.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So correct me if I'm wrong.
- 17:28Speaker 3: You're saying survivor fitness is kind of a one on one,
- 17:32Speaker 3: which I think is important because, like, you know, you
- 17:35Speaker 3: get a good diagnosis after you I mean, you know,
- 17:37Speaker 3: a good you know, getting out there again. I don't
- 17:41Speaker 3: know what I'm trying to say, but I'm trying to
- 17:42Speaker 3: say that, you know, if you get a clean bill
- 17:45Speaker 3: of health, good lord, that's another whole show brain fog
- 17:49Speaker 3: my gosh.
- 17:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I was like, well it just happened, but a stroke, Yeah, we.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Remember, we will have it. We will do a show
- 17:57Speaker 1: on that.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:58Speaker 3: What I'm saying is a clean bill of health you
- 17:59Speaker 3: feel like, oh okay, even though I'm fifty four, maybe
- 18:02Speaker 3: I should act like I'm eighteen and get out there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: And I think people are intimidated and to get back
- 18:08Speaker 3: out and start working out again.
- 18:10Speaker 2: So is it one on one?
- 18:12Speaker 4: Everything that we do initially is one on one we
- 18:15Speaker 4: do have group workout classes and group fitness classes that
- 18:18Speaker 4: once people start in the program, when we are the
- 18:21Speaker 4: trainers do an assessment and really get that baseline for
- 18:23Speaker 4: where they are, and they start working out one on one,
- 18:26Speaker 4: they can funnel in and do these group workout classes virtually.
- 18:30Speaker 4: We have them virtually twice a week that they can
- 18:33Speaker 4: tap into for kind of like a third workout each
- 18:35Speaker 4: week and then continue on after their twenty four sessions
- 18:40Speaker 4: with that trainer is up. And then same thing on
- 18:42Speaker 4: the nutrition side, because people don't you know, you could
- 18:46Speaker 4: take Julie what you've been through and then take someone
- 18:48Speaker 4: who's been through the exact same situation and your bodies
- 18:51Speaker 4: don't respond the same. And so for us, you know,
- 18:54Speaker 4: we think about it as there's no one size fits
- 18:57Speaker 4: all when it comes to a cancer diagnosis, and that
- 19:00Speaker 4: includes deering treatment and after treatment. And that's why it's
- 19:04Speaker 4: so critical to take somebody and say, okay, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 4: where were you before, what were you doing before? What
- 19:09Speaker 4: gets you excited when you're working out? What challenges do
- 19:12Speaker 4: you face? And really you know, what are your personal goals?
- 19:15Speaker 4: Because you know nothing against group classes. I think that
- 19:20Speaker 4: group classes are great and have their place. I think
- 19:22Speaker 4: there's so much great community that comes along in group classes,
- 19:25Speaker 4: but I think that it's important that people have the
- 19:28Speaker 4: opportunity to figure out what really works for them and
- 19:31Speaker 4: having a trainer come alongside of them and saying like, okay,
- 19:34Speaker 4: let's fix that aspect, because, like you said, if you're
- 19:37Speaker 4: fifty four and you're working out besides you know, an
- 19:40Speaker 4: eighteen year old, but you might like try and prove
- 19:42Speaker 4: something and then all of a sudden you're out for
- 19:45Speaker 4: a week and a half because you try to prove
- 19:47Speaker 4: something you weren't quite ready to prove and that you know,
- 19:50Speaker 4: and that's that stinks, And that's not where we want
- 19:53Speaker 4: people to end up when they're trying to move forward,
- 19:56Speaker 4: is moving backwardsness.
- 19:58Speaker 3: And I'm a big fan of individual so so as
- 20:03Speaker 3: far as the virtual part, so it's on zoom if
- 20:05Speaker 3: you're doing it virtually, and.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Like I have a one of those mirror things, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: there's an option of then seeing you, and I don't
- 20:14Speaker 1: ever want that because I'm like, I don't want people.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I don't want them to see me. But this case,
- 20:18Speaker 1: you want the trainer's like you have a real trainer
- 20:20Speaker 1: right in front of you, but you don't what you
- 20:23Speaker 1: don't have a gym in your house. I'm like, what,
- 20:25Speaker 1: what equipment do you use? How do people navigate that
- 20:28Speaker 1: part of it?
- 20:29Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 20:29Speaker 4: Yeah, So so strength and resistance training is so important
- 20:34Speaker 4: for cancer survivors and really anyone in general when it
- 20:38Speaker 4: comes to health and business. And and so what we
- 20:40Speaker 4: do is we provide up to three pieces of equipment
- 20:43Speaker 4: for every one of our virtual participants and we send
- 20:45Speaker 4: that correctly to their home. And so we have so
- 20:49Speaker 4: that might be a pair of bands, a stability ball.
- 20:52Speaker 4: We typically use things that can kind of adjust in
- 20:55Speaker 4: weight as people progress or or resistance rather and so
- 21:00Speaker 4: that we can kind of progress them along as well.
- 21:03Speaker 4: And our virtual trainers are fantastic. We have a pocket
- 21:07Speaker 4: full of individuals who do only our virtual training, and
- 21:10Speaker 4: I think that that's worth noting too. So we have
- 21:11Speaker 4: affiliate trainers and dieticians as well as mental health therapists
- 21:16Speaker 4: that we kind of think of as just an extension
- 21:19Speaker 4: of our survivor fitness family. And so we have some wonderful,
- 21:24Speaker 4: wonderful virtual trainers who love to have this type of communication,
- 21:28Speaker 4: who love to get on and they're good at feeling that,
- 21:32Speaker 4: you know, awkward moments if you will. As you're sitting
- 21:35Speaker 4: there doing your exercises right watching you, they'll turn the
- 21:39Speaker 4: music on. And you know, personal training is personal, so
- 21:43Speaker 4: our trainers get to know you during that time, and
- 21:46Speaker 4: we really work also to make sure that it's a
- 21:49Speaker 4: good fit, not just from what they know and what
- 21:52Speaker 4: you've been through, but also personality wise, because you're going
- 21:55Speaker 4: to be sitting there with them for forty five minutes
- 21:57Speaker 4: to an hour or twice a week. Oh yeah, you
- 22:00Speaker 4: want to get along with them, and you're going to
- 22:02Speaker 4: share things with them, and so yeah, we have people
- 22:06Speaker 4: who love love this virtual programming and it's just as
- 22:09Speaker 4: beneficial as the in person. Of course, you don't get
- 22:13Speaker 4: all the equipment that you might get in person, but
- 22:15Speaker 4: there's still so much that you can do from your home,
- 22:18Speaker 4: and a lot of us have more equipment and tools
- 22:21Speaker 4: around the house that we might not realize that we have,
- 22:24Speaker 4: like stairs and things like that that we can utilize
- 22:26Speaker 4: during a workout, and so our trainers are really great
- 22:29Speaker 4: at tapping into that in addition to the equipment that
- 22:32Speaker 4: we said.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well, like my aunt, she's eighty six now
- 22:36Speaker 1: and she's really into chair yoga. Yeah, just using a chair.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Well, and you think about like eighty six, and you know,
- 22:44Speaker 4: this is where we're really big on whether you're eighteen
- 22:47Speaker 4: or eighty eight, right, whether you've no matter what you've
- 22:51Speaker 4: been through, because at eighty six you got it. There's
- 22:54Speaker 4: so many things that involve squats if you will and
- 22:58Speaker 4: nobody at eighty six if you're like, can you do
- 23:00Speaker 4: any squats? Like I can't do any squats, But they
- 23:02Speaker 4: do squats every day. If they're still driving, they're getting
- 23:05Speaker 4: out and out of the car, if they're getting in
- 23:07Speaker 4: and off of their chair. You know, all sorts of
- 23:11Speaker 4: things that you do all throughout the day use different muscles,
- 23:14Speaker 4: and so at that point, a lot of it is
- 23:15Speaker 4: functional fitness, but you know, bone health and really learning
- 23:21Speaker 4: how to exercise your body at different ages can really
- 23:25Speaker 4: be pivotal to living a full and healthy life. Because listen,
- 23:28Speaker 4: if you've beat cancer, no matter how old you are,
- 23:31Speaker 4: you want to live and you want to be able
- 23:33Speaker 4: to go see your grandchildren or go on a walk
- 23:36Speaker 4: around the neighborhood or whatever that might look like for
- 23:38Speaker 4: you to bring you joy. And so it's really important
- 23:42Speaker 4: to you know, if cheer yoga is people love cheer yoga,
- 23:45Speaker 4: and people love all sorts of different things for every
- 23:47Speaker 4: activity level. And I just love. I love that an
- 23:50Speaker 4: eighty six year old is doing cheeri yoga because.
- 23:53Speaker 2: We should do it in our hotel room.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Actually, do that.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Make you?
- 23:59Speaker 1: So?
- 23:59Speaker 2: I want to know what.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Do your kids know about survivor fitness? What do they
- 24:03Speaker 3: say about it? What did they know about you know,
- 24:07Speaker 3: your husband? I mean, you know, do they speak about it?
- 24:10Speaker 3: I mean they obviously weren't around when he was diagnosed,
- 24:13Speaker 3: but how does this fit into your family? Yeah?
- 24:16Speaker 1: And you all are inspiring on so many levels in
- 24:18Speaker 1: terms of making this happen. So yeah, what what do
- 24:20Speaker 1: they know about it and think about it?
- 24:23Speaker 4: Well? Thank you so much. I appreciate that. So, yeah,
- 24:26Speaker 4: we have almost nine year old twins, a girl and
- 24:28Speaker 4: a boy. They'll be nine. They're Christmas baby, so they'll
- 24:31Speaker 4: be nine on December twenty third. But you know, it's
- 24:34Speaker 4: been interesting to kind of bring them into our sphere
- 24:38Speaker 4: of survivor fitness, if you will. They asked why they
- 24:42Speaker 4: couldn't be on the interview tonight, so there. But you know,
- 24:48Speaker 4: if the Aaron fans are, diagnosis first came up when
- 24:52Speaker 4: we were actually had sports center on one morning and
- 24:55Speaker 4: they were sharing a story about a football player's parent
- 24:58Speaker 4: who was diagnosed, and so our kids started asking him
- 25:01Speaker 4: what is cancer? Who has cancer? All these questions and
- 25:04Speaker 4: they were only four years old, and so at that point,
- 25:07Speaker 4: and our son is very curious, and he said, we'll
- 25:10Speaker 4: have people all have cancer, and so we kind of
- 25:13Speaker 4: just jumped into the conversation. You know, he's four. He
- 25:16Speaker 4: only understood so much at that point, and so it
- 25:19Speaker 4: was very high level. Yes, your dad had cancer. He
- 25:22Speaker 4: is fine, he has been fine for a long time now.
- 25:26Speaker 4: And then so that kind of edged into them learning
- 25:29Speaker 4: a bit more about what we do. So I work
- 25:32Speaker 4: full time for the organization. Aaron serves on our board
- 25:35Speaker 4: of directors, so he has a separate job. So it's it's,
- 25:38Speaker 4: you know, kind of tying the two together. But I
- 25:40Speaker 4: do work from home, and so they get to see
- 25:42Speaker 4: a lot of survivor fitness and what we do, and
- 25:45Speaker 4: so they know we help cancer survivors and they've come
- 25:49Speaker 4: to we have some events that we do throughout the
- 25:51Speaker 4: year all over all over the place, especially in regards
- 25:56Speaker 4: to fitness, and we do some dinners and they don't
- 25:58Speaker 4: get to come to those, but the events that are
- 26:00Speaker 4: a little more family friendly. They get to come to
- 26:03Speaker 4: those and it's fun for them to see to see
- 26:07Speaker 4: things on a bigger level. So when they ask what
- 26:10Speaker 4: what mommy does for for work, they say that we
- 26:13Speaker 4: help cancer survivors. Yes, come to learn a little bit
- 26:17Speaker 4: more about that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that is that is great. Do you have a fan? Now?
- 26:22Speaker 1: I know you don't have a favorite survivor per se,
- 26:25Speaker 1: but you have a story that you want to share.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I mean, like, what's what's an example of this? This
- 26:32Speaker 1: is a huge this is a big success story that
- 26:34Speaker 1: I want to share with you to inspire you. If
- 26:36Speaker 1: you're a cancer survivor and you're interested in this, this
- 26:39Speaker 1: will give you some great hope that this is exactly
- 26:41Speaker 1: where you need to be.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, I, as you said, I don't have
- 26:47Speaker 4: one favorite story. I do have one that I'll tell
- 26:49Speaker 4: you in a second, but before I tell you, like
- 26:51Speaker 4: an extreme story. I think it's so important for people
- 26:53Speaker 4: to as Julie you're saying, like, it doesn't matter if
- 26:57Speaker 4: you've had a surgery or you know, and I say
- 27:01Speaker 4: this in full quotation, marks is some people deal with
- 27:03Speaker 4: that survivor guilt, but you still oftentimes deal with a
- 27:06Speaker 4: lot of the mental and emotional and physical aspects as well.
- 27:10Speaker 4: And so you know, honestly, seeing people being able to
- 27:14Speaker 4: do activities that they loved that they thought they never
- 27:16Speaker 4: be able to do again bring so much story to
- 27:19Speaker 4: my day when I get an email that says, like,
- 27:22Speaker 4: I never thought I would be able to, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 4: coach my kids soccer again, and I'm able to not
- 27:29Speaker 4: only to do that, but I'm able to do so
- 27:31Speaker 4: much more. We had one lady who was doing like
- 27:36Speaker 4: kind of a couch to five K program and her
- 27:38Speaker 4: teenage son said, you know what, I'm going to do
- 27:40Speaker 4: this with you law and came alongside her and they
- 27:43Speaker 4: did it together. And so I love those. But one
- 27:46Speaker 4: particular story that is if I had a quick favorite,
- 27:51Speaker 4: this would be my favorite. A woman named Carol. She
- 27:55Speaker 4: was diagnosed with formasaracoma and what is had her right
- 28:03Speaker 4: side muscle removed the majority of her right side muscle
- 28:07Speaker 4: and so she really struggled with her balance. She really
- 28:11Speaker 4: struggled with all sorts of things, and her fall risk
- 28:17Speaker 4: was very high. And so that meant that when she
- 28:19Speaker 4: fell getting up was not just like you and I
- 28:23Speaker 4: get up off the floor. It was very She had
- 28:25Speaker 4: to have this very strategic manner of like crawling over
- 28:28Speaker 4: to an object and getting to a solid object and
- 28:33Speaker 4: pulling herself up. Now, if she fell, and like she
- 28:37Speaker 4: wouldn't let anybody pick her up because it was painful.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Her husband and one of her sons were the only
- 28:43Speaker 4: people that really knew the proper way to help her
- 28:46Speaker 4: get up, and she really struggled, struggled with this. Her
- 28:50Speaker 4: husband had to take a leave of absence and disability
- 28:53Speaker 4: from work because she wasn't able to be left at
- 28:55Speaker 4: home because if she felt she could potentially hit her head,
- 29:00Speaker 4: and unfortunately that happened. She at one point she hit
- 29:02Speaker 4: her head, had a concussion, broke some ribs and just
- 29:06Speaker 4: kind of things. We were not looking great, and we
- 29:10Speaker 4: had already been in contact with her at that point
- 29:12Speaker 4: and her doctor, her physician, her on colleges sorry, and
- 29:18Speaker 4: she had met with him and said, you know, when
- 29:19Speaker 4: we get to a certain point, I'm going to tell
- 29:20Speaker 4: you to sign up for Survivor Fitness because I really
- 29:22Speaker 4: think it would be helpful. And so we had spoken
- 29:26Speaker 4: and then she had this fall, so we had to
- 29:29Speaker 4: wait a bit longer, and in the interim she went
- 29:31Speaker 4: to physical therapy and I have great friends who are
- 29:36Speaker 4: physical therapists. I love physical therapists. But unfortunately, her physical
- 29:40Speaker 4: therapist did not really surf her in the best manner
- 29:44Speaker 4: as far as helping her overcome what she had gone through.
- 29:48Speaker 4: And that's not always, you know, oftentimes, right, this is
- 29:51Speaker 4: the issue, this is what they need to work on,
- 29:53Speaker 4: and so that's what they did. And unfortunately, at the
- 29:56Speaker 4: end of their sessions and their time together, she still
- 29:59Speaker 4: couldn't get up the ground. It was you know, this
- 30:01Speaker 4: is just the way your life is going to be.
- 30:03Speaker 4: And I'm so sorry, but this is just how it is.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Went back to her on collegist and our on collegist said,
- 30:10Speaker 4: remember how I told you about Survivor Fitness. I need
- 30:13Speaker 4: you to go back and sign up for this program.
- 30:15Speaker 4: So Carol came back to us and we talked through
- 30:22Speaker 4: a lot of things. And one of the things that
- 30:25Speaker 4: when I was talking with her trainer that we were
- 30:27Speaker 4: going to set her up with, Traynor said to me,
- 30:30Speaker 4: you know, we're going to work on all the things
- 30:32Speaker 4: that she does have, not the things she doesn't have.
- 30:35Speaker 4: And boy did they do that. It was six weeks
- 30:40Speaker 4: into it, but they worked and they worked, and Carol
- 30:43Speaker 4: really just dug in and gave her all. Was so
- 30:47Speaker 4: committed to herself, right to herself and to her family
- 30:53Speaker 4: and to she had a new grandchild, and she was
- 30:56Speaker 4: just very committed to saying like I am not going
- 30:58Speaker 4: to live my life like this. I'm going to make
- 31:01Speaker 4: this happen. And six weeks in, about six weeks in,
- 31:08Speaker 4: I get this phone call and it's her trainer and
- 31:11Speaker 4: Carol screaming and she's like, I did I did what
- 31:15Speaker 4: She's like, I got up off the ground by myself,
- 31:18Speaker 4: and I was like, I mean tears of joy and
- 31:20Speaker 4: something that we take for granted. It's like going one
- 31:24Speaker 4: day from being able to get up and off the
- 31:26Speaker 4: floor to the next day just being maybe not the
- 31:30Speaker 4: next day, but you know, almost not being able to
- 31:33Speaker 4: do so. And Carol has before that, it had about
- 31:38Speaker 4: a year before a diagnosis, tragically lost her son by
- 31:41Speaker 4: an impaired driver in a terrible car accident, and so
- 31:46Speaker 4: she had not only dealt with that, but then kind
- 31:48Speaker 4: of almost straight into she was still recovering and mentally
- 31:52Speaker 4: and emotionally dealing with that incident when she had her
- 31:54Speaker 4: cancer diagnosis, and one of her goals was to hide
- 32:00Speaker 4: Mount Kilimanjaro, not just for herself but for her son.
- 32:04Speaker 4: And she did that two years ago, and I know.
- 32:08Speaker 4: And so she went from not being able to get
- 32:11Speaker 4: up and off the floor to hiking Mount Kilimandar. She's
- 32:14Speaker 4: I think at this point now she's fifty seven to
- 32:16Speaker 4: fifty eight, maybe the older. I can't remember exact age
- 32:20Speaker 4: at this point. But she is such just a just
- 32:25Speaker 4: a testament to the joy and the empowerment that can
- 32:29Speaker 4: come from something so simple as someone saying to you,
- 32:32Speaker 4: we're not gonna focus on the cans. We're gonna focus
- 32:34Speaker 4: on the cans, and we're gonna make this happen together.
- 32:37Speaker 4: And I'm gonna hold your hand every step of the
- 32:39Speaker 4: way until it's time to let you go. And that's
- 32:42Speaker 4: what they did.
- 32:43Speaker 2: So that is my I love it.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I can see why. I mean, I can honestly say
- 32:49Speaker 1: I don't think I could hike Mount kill Him and Jarrow.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I don't even know if I could make it, like
- 32:53Speaker 1: hike over to melt Colin. I don't even know. That's
- 32:56Speaker 1: not even gonna happen. So I am so that's an impressed,
- 33:00Speaker 1: have awesome story. Well, Meg, if you every everybody I
- 33:05Speaker 1: think needs a spat experience.
- 33:07Speaker 2: To well, I mean fitness. They could add spot services
- 33:10Speaker 2: to you there.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it'd be awesome. So yes, and so she may
- 33:14Speaker 1: have a favorite she may. Yes, Well she's about to
- 33:16Speaker 1: have a favorite because we have a new sponsor that
- 33:20Speaker 1: we're so excited about, Woodlock Resorts.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Oh.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Yes, and they were named the number one best all
- 33:27Speaker 1: inclusive resort in the US for twenty twenty five. And
- 33:30Speaker 1: they are now sponsors of our Zoomer Moms. Yes, and
- 33:34Speaker 1: we would now like to welcome into the show our
- 33:36Speaker 1: Zoomer Moms. Welcome, Zoomer Moms. Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Hello ladies. Well I'm going to introduce each one of
- 33:44Speaker 1: you and I want you to tell your name, where
- 33:47Speaker 1: you're from, a little bit about yourself, and do you
- 33:49Speaker 1: have a question for Meg Kathy, Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 33:53Speaker 7: Welcome. Thank you so much, Monica, I really appreciate it.
- 33:58Speaker 7: Wipe them back happy tears because what an inspirational show
- 34:02Speaker 7: this is. I'm a Kathy Ward. I'm from Plano, Texas.
- 34:06Speaker 7: My daughter just turned twenty six, my son's about to
- 34:09Speaker 7: turn twenty two. Oh, where does the time go. I'm
- 34:13Speaker 7: a former special education teacher and have also been elected
- 34:16Speaker 7: to a couple of offices, currently serve on a commission for
- 34:19Speaker 7: the governor here in the state of Texas. My goodness,
- 34:25Speaker 7: my mom's a cancer survivor. Unfortunately, my mom passed away
- 34:28Speaker 7: a few years ago and I miss her dearly, but
- 34:31Speaker 7: it was not from cancer. And one of the reasons
- 34:35Speaker 7: and this she had her cancer diagnosis my gounness thirty
- 34:38Speaker 7: five plus years ago, almost almost forty years ago now,
- 34:42Speaker 7: and she found a nutritionist in a little shopping strip
- 34:48Speaker 7: in Richardson, Texas, and learned so much about supplements. She
- 34:55Speaker 7: was a physical therapist, so she knew physically what to
- 34:58Speaker 7: do with herself and what not to do with herself
- 35:00Speaker 7: with her breast cancer diagnosis. And we feel like we
- 35:04Speaker 7: had my mom for all of those decades because she
- 35:09Speaker 7: chose to take care of herself with all of the
- 35:12Speaker 7: things out there. My mom was very open and willing
- 35:16Speaker 7: to learn about that. We feel like that helped keep
- 35:19Speaker 7: the cancer away. She never had cancer again after she
- 35:22Speaker 7: had that original diagnosis, but her body did go through
- 35:25Speaker 7: a lot of changes with chemo and radiation. She ended
- 35:28Speaker 7: up having allergies she had never had, and just a
- 35:31Speaker 7: lot of things she had to work through, and I
- 35:34Speaker 7: think of what a gift and an organization like yours
- 35:37Speaker 7: and your husband's would have been for her. But that
- 35:39Speaker 7: was back before the internet days. My question to you,
- 35:43Speaker 7: Meg is, Okay, we've all just learned about your fantastic
- 35:48Speaker 7: organization and what.
- 35:49Speaker 4: You can do.
- 35:51Speaker 7: If I'm trying to explain this to a friend who
- 35:54Speaker 7: maybe is saying, no, nothing's going to work, I don't
- 35:58Speaker 7: want to hear about anything going to do exactly what
- 36:00Speaker 7: my doctor says, and that's it. How what would be
- 36:04Speaker 7: the appropriate way for somebody like me to introduce your organization?
- 36:10Speaker 2: That's a good question.
- 36:11Speaker 7: A friend or a family member, good question.
- 36:16Speaker 4: That is a great question. That's a great question. You know,
- 36:20Speaker 4: people kind of come at their own speace, if you will.
- 36:22Speaker 4: I think a lot of times when it comes to
- 36:26Speaker 4: a cancer diagnosis, there are people who get the diagnosis
- 36:29Speaker 4: and they apply to survivor Fitness at there. Right, They're
- 36:33Speaker 4: like that, I'm going to get through with this, and
- 36:35Speaker 4: whenever I'm done with all the things, I'm starting survivor Fitness.
- 36:40Speaker 4: And then there are people that come to us two
- 36:41Speaker 4: to three years later, right because after they've gotten it,
- 36:44Speaker 4: because they you know, want to do it.
- 36:46Speaker 7: On their own.
- 36:48Speaker 4: Kind of make start and then kind might fall off
- 36:50Speaker 4: right So, you know, if they're on social media, I
- 36:54Speaker 4: tell people to tell them to follow us on Facebook
- 36:57Speaker 4: or follow us on Instagram because they'll get to see
- 37:00Speaker 4: diferent participants. Really the myriad of individuals that we work with,
- 37:05Speaker 4: and they might identify with one of those people. We've
- 37:09Speaker 4: got stories like Carols on our YouTube channel who kind
- 37:14Speaker 4: of talk about different people talking about what they've been
- 37:16Speaker 4: through and people who struggled with what to do after
- 37:22Speaker 4: people who again thought that they could could handle it,
- 37:26Speaker 4: or I just think for everybody, it's so individualized, and
- 37:29Speaker 4: like you said, some people aren't ready to hop right
- 37:31Speaker 4: in or think that they can do it on their own.
- 37:33Speaker 4: And you know what some people do and they have
- 37:35Speaker 4: great success on their own because they know what to do.
- 37:38Speaker 4: But we don't put a time cap a long time
- 37:41Speaker 4: cap if you will, on or sorry, rather a short
- 37:43Speaker 4: time cap on when people can apply after their received
- 37:48Speaker 4: kind of the all clear, they're done with their surgeries
- 37:51Speaker 4: and their treatments. If someone's on a maintenance medication, they
- 37:54Speaker 4: can apply or we can talk to them, you know,
- 37:57Speaker 4: have them reach out survivor fitness dot or email me,
- 38:00Speaker 4: and I'm happy to talk to those people because I
- 38:03Speaker 4: you know, I think that some people just need kind
- 38:05Speaker 4: of like to dip their toes in the water, maybe
- 38:07Speaker 4: sign up for a newsletter, you know, just kind of
- 38:09Speaker 4: learn a little bit more about what we do, and
- 38:13Speaker 4: hopefully they'll apply to the program or the programs when
- 38:17Speaker 4: they're ready. And typically I feel like that that's the
- 38:20Speaker 4: best way.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that sounds good. Susan, welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about yourself, where you're from,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and do you have a question for Meg.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Thank you very much for having me Meg, You're You're awesome.
- 38:33Speaker 5: I'm so encouraged, so enlightened by your presentation. My name
- 38:38Speaker 5: is Susan Dacak. I'm originally from back that Iraq. I
- 38:41Speaker 5: moved to the country to this country in nineteen seventy
- 38:44Speaker 5: eight and became a naturalized citizen in nineteen eighty five
- 38:48Speaker 5: on Flag Day. I earned my engineering degree in nineteen
- 38:53Speaker 5: eighty three and I've been working in the source system
- 38:56Speaker 5: and the rehabilitation of pipeline trensials technology ever since. My question,
- 39:02Speaker 5: my mom and I are cancer survivors, and my question
- 39:05Speaker 5: to you is do you see any kind of statistics
- 39:09Speaker 5: that shows people from that part of the world have
- 39:13Speaker 5: more of certain type of cancer than others. If you
- 39:17Speaker 5: don't know the answer, it's okay, that's not you know,
- 39:20Speaker 5: that's not what you're you've been talking about. But I
- 39:23Speaker 5: just want to know because I hear a lot of
- 39:25Speaker 5: people from that part of the world having a certain
- 39:28Speaker 5: type of cancer that other people here in the United States.
- 39:30Speaker 7: Do not have.
- 39:32Speaker 4: I do not know the answer to that question. I'm
- 39:35Speaker 4: not familiar with those statistics and haven't dug into that
- 39:38Speaker 4: area yet, so I'm sorry I can't answer that.
- 39:44Speaker 5: I think that something in the digestive system. I see
- 39:47Speaker 5: more of people in the Middle East, from the Middle
- 39:50Speaker 5: East than than here in the United States. And because here,
- 39:55Speaker 5: I think the top life and here you're you know,
- 39:58Speaker 5: people pay attention to drinking water and doing all kinds
- 40:01Speaker 5: of things. Over there, it's very very limited. When I remember,
- 40:06Speaker 5: when we go out, when we go to the stores
- 40:09Speaker 5: or whatever, we make sure we don't drink water that
- 40:11Speaker 5: day because there aren't any good bathrooms anywhere, So we
- 40:15Speaker 5: really overstress our digestive system. And that's why I was
- 40:18Speaker 5: asking if you knew anything about that.
- 40:20Speaker 4: No, But I mean I think that. It's interesting really
- 40:23Speaker 4: all the statistics you know that are coming out even
- 40:27Speaker 4: in the United States about things that are going on
- 40:30Speaker 4: in the diagnosis ages of certain types of cancer is changing,
- 40:33Speaker 4: and I think it's important for everyone to really kind
- 40:36Speaker 4: of dig into, whether it be where you're from in
- 40:39Speaker 4: the area and kind of what your health history is
- 40:42Speaker 4: with your family, so that you can understand really how
- 40:47Speaker 4: that might impact you.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it's great to learn how to get an the
- 40:52Speaker 1: other side cure cancer, but preventing cancer and understanding a
- 40:56Speaker 1: lot more about it. Interesting that you brought that up, Susan,
- 40:58Speaker 1: because when my mother grew up in Appalatia and Kentucky
- 41:02Speaker 1: and when she got her cancer, which was so rare,
- 41:05Speaker 1: the doctor said, I like, is this hereditary? And he said, no,
- 41:08Speaker 1: we think it's environmental. Oh so yeah, but yeah, I'm
- 41:12Speaker 1: it's a good point. You know, it's good to know.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Let's hope that we get to a place where we
- 41:16Speaker 1: don't have cancer.
- 41:17Speaker 2: That would be that would be.
- 41:21Speaker 4: Out of business, I would be would be.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Right, So exactly, deb welcome to the Mom's Club. Tell
- 41:32Speaker 1: us a little bit about yourself, where you're from, and
- 41:34Speaker 1: do you have a question for Meg.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited
- 41:38Speaker 6: about this topic. Unfortunately, I am a survivor as well.
- 41:43Speaker 6: My name is Dev Miles. I'm from Austin, Texas, originally
- 41:47Speaker 6: a Midwest transplant.
- 41:50Speaker 4: I have two kids.
- 41:52Speaker 6: I'm a recent empty nester and this program is fabulous.
- 41:59Speaker 6: I'm wondering how you're scaling it because I could literally right.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Now tell five friends.
- 42:05Speaker 6: Unfortunately, but this program is fantastic. I think I've been
- 42:11Speaker 6: through a lot of this and I think you guys
- 42:14Speaker 6: have so many the right components, and I'm just wondering
- 42:19Speaker 6: how you're going to scale because the virtual and or
- 42:23Speaker 6: multiple locations and all of this stuff, like how you're
- 42:26Speaker 6: going to do that? And if you want to talk
- 42:28Speaker 6: a little bit about your fundraising so that if people
- 42:30Speaker 6: watch this week and you know, help help the organization, well.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Thank you, I appreciate that. So virtual right now, yes,
- 42:40Speaker 4: is the way we scale for right now. If any
- 42:44Speaker 4: trainers are out there people interested, you know, our trainers
- 42:47Speaker 4: get their Cancer Exercise Special certification so that they have
- 42:50Speaker 4: a more in depth understanding and we often have people
- 42:54Speaker 4: who reach out and so that's how we've been able
- 42:56Speaker 4: to scale virtually, and we are we're looking at kind
- 42:59Speaker 4: of what what city is next and really tying in
- 43:03Speaker 4: a bit more into the health systems as we do
- 43:05Speaker 4: that a bit more strategically. To be quite frank we
- 43:08Speaker 4: work very well with the health systems in the cities
- 43:11Speaker 4: where we physically are located now and then we have
- 43:14Speaker 4: great partnerships with different health systems outside of the state
- 43:18Speaker 4: of Tennessee as well. People referring individuals to the program
- 43:21Speaker 4: we do. We are a nonprofit. We are five oh
- 43:24Speaker 4: one C three. We put through everyone who applies to
- 43:27Speaker 4: our program at no cost to them, but through different corporations,
- 43:33Speaker 4: grant funding, individual donors were fortunate to be able to
- 43:38Speaker 4: continue providing these programs and so we're so grateful to
- 43:42Speaker 4: do that. We've had some different like companies come along.
- 43:47Speaker 4: There's Noble, who is a fitness brand. During the month
- 43:51Speaker 4: of October they ran a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness
- 43:54Speaker 4: Month and use part of the sales that they've had
- 43:59Speaker 4: to contribut to Survivor Fitness. So I am always open
- 44:03Speaker 4: to fundraising. I will never do that a way, that's
- 44:06Speaker 4: for sure.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Really.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's really how we're looking at scaling, because again,
- 44:11Speaker 4: our goal is to make sure that every cancer survivor
- 44:14Speaker 4: has the support that they need right and that no
- 44:16Speaker 4: one's sitting at home alone wondering what's next. So we're
- 44:20Speaker 4: kind of looking at strategically how to do that and
- 44:23Speaker 4: to do it in the best way possible to serve well.
- 44:25Speaker 1: We absolutely love this, Meg, and thank you so much
- 44:28Speaker 1: for joining us. Now tell us if you're interested, If
- 44:31Speaker 1: you're a cancer survivor and you're interested in the program, yeah,
- 44:34Speaker 1: if you want to get involved and help, as you said,
- 44:36Speaker 1: fund or support this, where can we find you?
- 44:40Speaker 4: So Survivor Fitness dot org is our website, and then
- 44:43Speaker 4: we are Survivor Fitness Foundation on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn
- 44:49Speaker 4: and YouTube as well. So Survivor Fitness Foundation, And as

- 45:36Speaker 4: we can do to help with that, we we would
- 45:38Speaker 4: love to.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I love it.
- 45:39Speaker 4: I love it.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Your empathy is off the charts. We cannot thank you
- 45:43Speaker 3: enough for coming today much.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Yes, now, Julie, if you decide to do it virtually,
- 45:48Speaker 1: I mean, I wouldn't mind taking an exercise class.
- 45:50Speaker 4: With you, just so.
- 45:51Speaker 2: We've been partners in exercise before.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Yes, apparently, so I guess you have to do it
- 45:56Speaker 3: ninety days before it becomes.
- 45:58Speaker 5: I have it.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Okay, I'll make a commitment with you. I absolutely Heaven
- 46:03Speaker 1: knows I need.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Yeah, if we can have a trainer, you know, come
- 46:09Speaker 4: in and do some exercise work with you both, right,
- 46:12Speaker 4: that would may can figure out. But if your bodies
- 46:15Speaker 4: and your personalities is you're working together for that.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that would help both. Well. Thank you again so much,
- 46:21Speaker 1: and we want to thank you for having our Thank you,
