- 0:13If you look under the hood of almost any WordPress site that has been running for a
- 0:16couple years, you, you, you always find them.
- 0:20These tiny little utility plugins sitting there quietly.
- 0:23The ones you installed for one specific fix in like 2021 and completely forgot
- 0:27about?
- 0:28Exactly.
- 0:29You put it in to cap login tries or downgrade a version or fix a layout,
- 0:33and it just sits there.
- 0:35But WP Goldmine just did a massive audit of fifty seven thousand three hundred and
- 0:40eighty three plugins in the official directory, and...
- 0:44man, the numbers are wild.
- 0:46Wait, how bad is it?
- 0:47In the bracket of plugins with ten thousand to one hundred thousand active installs,
- 0:51twenty four percent of plugins in the ten K to one hundred K active install band
- 0:55have not been updated in over two years.
- 0:58That is one thousand two hundred and nine popular plugins running on live sites with
- 1:02zero maintainer.
- 1:03Wait, twenty four percent?
- 1:05One in four plugins in that popular tier are just...
- 1:08ghosts?
- 1:08Total ghost utilities.
- 1:10We are talking staples like Limit Login Attempts, Layout Grid Block,
- 1:15WP Downgrade.
- 1:17People leave them on production sites because they still seem to work,
- 1:20but it creates this silent operational friction.
- 1:23You end up accumulating all this unmaintained code just out of habit.
- 1:28And the problem is, as a site owner or an AI crawler trying to parse the site,
- 1:33you have no idea if that code is going to break on the next core update or introduce
- 1:36a massive security hole.
- 1:38It is clutter that nobody wants to touch because nobody wants to break the site.
- 1:42Which brings up a really interesting question.
- 1:45Do we even need thirty separate utility plugins anymore if AI can just execute those
- 1:50administrative tasks directly?
- 1:52Well, that is what Benjamin Intal is testing right now with his new experiment
- 1:56called Ahentic AI workspace.
- 1:58He demonstrated launching a site, configuring layouts, installing plugins,
- 2:02all through native WordPress APIs with zero external servers and no Model Context
- 2:07Protocol middleware.
- 2:08Wait, so instead of installing a plugin to tweak a database setting or rewrite an
- 2:12option, the AI agent just talks directly to the core WordPress APIs?
- 2:17Right on the dashboard.
- 2:19It cuts out that whole middle layer of single purpose utility bloat.
- 2:22You just ask it to reconfigure your layout or audit your setup,
- 2:26and it uses internal core endpoints.
- 2:28I, I, I see the appeal, but from an AI discovery and security standpoint,
- 2:34giving an autonomous agent direct access to execute core API commands inside the
- 2:40admin...
- 2:41that makes me a bit nervous.
- 2:43Where do you draw the guardrails?
- 2:44That is the central debate right now.
- 2:46Site owners trust a static, unmaintained plugin because it feels predictable,
- 2:51even when it is a security risk.
- 2:53Trusting an active AI agent that can execute PHP or modify database options in real
- 2:58time requires a whole new framework for permissions.
- 3:01It comes down to control.
- 3:03If an AI agent can clean up those unmaintained plugins and handle routine
- 3:07maintenance without needing a clutter of thirty tools, that simplifies life for
- 3:11builders.
- 3:13But people need to know exactly what the agent is touching before it hits execute.
- 3:17Yeah, replacing ghost plugins with smart automation sounds great,
- 3:21as long as the AI does not become the new mystery running in the background.
