- 0:01Speaker 1: Gospel Reflection for the 19th day of October in the
- 0:06Speaker 1: year of our Lord, 2026. Today we celebrate the memorial
- 0:12Speaker 1: of St. John's, French name, de Brebus and Isaac Jogues, J-O-G-U-E-S.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Even though I'm part French, I don't pronounce it particularly well.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I failed French three times in a row. I finally
- 0:32Speaker 1: passed Spanish with a D, so, you know. D is
- 0:35Speaker 1: for diploma. Anyway, they were saints, and their companions were martyrs.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So our reading today is from Luke chapter 12, verses
- 0:46Speaker 1: 13 through 21. And one of the multitudes said to him, Master,
- 0:50Speaker 1: speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.
- 0:54Speaker 1: But he said to him, Man, who hath appropriated, who
- 0:57Speaker 1: hath appointed me? Sorry. Who hath appointed me judge or
- 1:00Speaker 1: divider over you? And he said to them, Take heed
- 1:05Speaker 1: and beware of all covetousness. For a man's life doth
- 1:09Speaker 1: not consist of the abundance of things which he possesseth. Possesseth. Possesseth.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What he has. And he spoke similarly to them, saying,
- 1:20Speaker 1: The land of a certain rich man bought forth plenty
- 1:25Speaker 1: of fruits. And he thought within himself, saying, What shall
- 1:28Speaker 1: I do, because I have no room where to bestow
- 1:31Speaker 1: my fruits? And he said, This I will do. I
- 1:33Speaker 1: will pull down my barns and build greater, and into
- 1:36Speaker 1: them I will gather all things that are grown to
- 1:40Speaker 1: me and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul,
- 1:45Speaker 1: thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take
- 1:49Speaker 1: thy rest, eat, drink, make good cheer. But God said
- 1:53Speaker 1: to him, Thou fool. This night do they require thy
- 1:58Speaker 1: soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which
- 2:02Speaker 1: thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure
- 2:08Speaker 1: for himself, and is not rich toward God. And again
- 2:12Speaker 1: today we have a very difficult gospel, don't we? If
- 2:17Speaker 1: you've ever been mistreated by a family member who withheld
- 2:20Speaker 1: or just blatantly took something that was rightfully yours, You
- 2:23Speaker 1: know just how upset this young man must have been.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I have been through that experience. The anger and hurt
- 2:30Speaker 1: are truly enough to push you beyond a point of reason.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It takes a lot of prayer, a whole lot of prayer,
- 2:37Speaker 1: to forgive people who hurt you in that way, especially
- 2:40Speaker 1: when they're family. See, family's not supposed to treat us
- 2:43Speaker 1: that way. We might expect something like that from a stranger.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Family can hurt us the most. Jesus puts things in
- 2:51Speaker 1: right order, though. You see, all blessings come from God.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It's up to him how he will distribute them and
- 2:55Speaker 1: to whom he will. Sure, we work hard to earn
- 2:59Speaker 1: a living, but it's still God who provides. We acknowledge
- 3:02Speaker 1: this every time we pray for our daily bread and
- 3:05Speaker 1: the Our Father. But surely a man owns what he
- 3:08Speaker 1: has earned, and it is his right to give to
- 3:11Speaker 1: whom he pleases, right? Well, not really. Return to the
- 3:14Speaker 1: theme of divine providence. God may take it all away
- 3:17Speaker 1: at any time. Consider how Jacob took Esau's inheritance and
- 3:21Speaker 1: all that got accomplished through Jacob. Now, it isn't fair.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Life isn't fair. Where do we get the idea that
- 3:30Speaker 1: life is supposed to be fair? It isn't. God doesn't
- 3:33Speaker 1: promise fairness. In fact, Jesus tells several parables that seem unfair.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And he promises us suffering, not earthly reward. Theft, of course,
- 3:44Speaker 1: is prohibited by the commandments. But all that happens is
- 3:46Speaker 1: in accord with the will of God. If someone steals
- 3:49Speaker 1: from you, God allowed it to happen. Now that's a
- 3:52Speaker 1: tough one to swallow, isn't it? But God promises to
- 3:56Speaker 1: work all things together for the good of those who
- 3:59Speaker 1: love him, and he knows best. It's in the hardest
- 4:03Speaker 1: of trials when we must turn to God all the more.
- 4:06Speaker 1: We may not be able to understand it, but we
- 4:08Speaker 1: must trust in God. As in the case of Judas,
- 4:11Speaker 1: God uses evil men and their actions for a good outcome.
- 4:16Speaker 1: If we can understand his intent, we would be thankful
- 4:19Speaker 1: for the suffering and our suffering would be easier. But
- 4:23Speaker 1: of course, then it wouldn't be suffering. At times, it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: an impossible task and all we can do is pray
- 4:31Speaker 1: and have faith that he knows better what's good for
- 4:36Speaker 1: us than we do. So y'all, that's my reflection on
- 4:40Speaker 1: today's gospel. Have a good one. It's a hard one.
- 4:44Speaker 1: It's a tough one to swallow. You will spend your
- 4:46Speaker 1: entire life I totally recommend Thomas Kempis' book, Trustful Surrender
- 4:53Speaker 1: to Divine Providence. Best work ever written on the subject.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Definitely read that. But understanding that God's permissive will or
- 5:07Speaker 1: his intent allows all things to happen. God does not
- 5:11Speaker 1: interfere with free will. Bad things will happen to us
- 5:15Speaker 1: caused by other people. And If we put things in
- 5:20Speaker 1: God's hands, if we trust God to work everything out,
- 5:22Speaker 1: all right. And if we can forgive, we'll get our
- 5:28Speaker 1: reward in heaven. There are very few things actually prohibited,
- 5:34Speaker 1: that Jesus actually prohibited by word in the Bible. Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 1: thou should not kill, thou should not commit adultery, thou
- 5:42Speaker 1: should not steal, etc. Don't worry. Be anxious for nothing.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Think about that. It's actually prohibited for a Christian to worry,
- 5:55Speaker 1: to be anxious. That goes against our human nature big time.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That's saintly, and it's something we've got to work toward.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It is true because God said it, and God can't lie.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Y'all have a good one, and I'll talk to you
- 6:11Speaker 1: next time.
