- 0:02Welcome to your PCJ pop, my name is Shauna,
- 0:10and I'm Olivia.
- 0:11In this week, I wanna talk about a 2024 Netflix documentary
- 0:16that I just watched that has been stuck in my mind
- 0:21for weeks now since I've seen it.
- 0:24It's called "Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy."
- 0:29So good.
- 0:30Oh my God, okay, so it's a documentary directed by Nic Stacey
- 0:34that exposes the marketing tactics used by major brands
- 0:38to encourage constant consumerism,
- 0:41exploring the hidden strategies that keep people buying
- 0:44and the environmental impact.
- 0:46This movie, oh my God, so it talks about what brands do
- 0:51that make you wanna endlessly scroll
- 0:54and just click "Buy Now," add to cart, add to cart, right?
- 0:57And it's used to like we had to go to the mall
- 1:00if we wanted to buy a new pair of jeans.
- 1:02Now we can go to Amazon or she and spend, you know,
- 1:0710 bucks and get a pair, Amazon, you can get it,
- 1:10you know, in a couple hours, she and you can get it
- 1:12super cheap and super low quality.
- 1:15And what this has done to just our spending habits
- 1:19are obsession with consumption and consumerism
- 1:23and what it's done to the environment.
- 1:24So so many of the things that we just click by
- 1:28and like all this fast fashion is made of microplastics
- 1:32and things that are just gonna end up in landfills
- 1:36or fall apart after a few washes.
- 1:39And it is, I mean, you've been teasing me for years
- 1:42for shopping at Shea and Olivia,
- 1:44it calling me a ecotarrist, like I am done.
- 1:47I am fucking done with Shea and I cleared out
- 1:51all of the plastic Tupperware that was falling apart
- 1:54in my kitchen and I'm just trying so hard now
- 1:58to be so much more like conscious of what I buy.
- 2:01And like do I need this?
- 2:03Do I really need this?
- 2:04And if I do, do I need to make the delivery driver
- 2:08drive to my house to drop this off?
- 2:10Or can I get in my car and like, you know,
- 2:13- Car and go buy it.
- 2:14- Yeah.
- 2:14- And go buy it and like spend, you know, small business
- 2:18and support local and support the local economy.
- 2:21Oh my God, this movie was just mind blowing.
- 2:24- That's so funny.
- 2:26You said the ecotarrist thing because I feel like
- 2:29I started saying that to you after I watched that
- 2:32when it first came out.
- 2:33(laughing)
- 2:35That's so funny.
- 2:36I just didn't get it.
- 2:37I wasn't ready yet, Olivia.
- 2:39- I know, I should have told you,
- 2:41I should have popped it when it came out.
- 2:43- I wasn't ready yet.
- 2:44- No, it is really good.
- 2:46I am, as you guys know, I recommend a lot of documentaries.
- 2:50I also think it's a really well shot.
- 2:53- Yeah.
- 2:54- And I really like the way that they present it
- 2:58and animate it and do all of that.
- 3:00I think it's really quite interesting.
- 3:02- It's very well produced and like colorful
- 3:05and they have like kind of like the fake marketing.
- 3:07Like here's step one to get people addicted.
- 3:10And like it's just, it's a very fun watch too.
- 3:12But very mind opening, I will definitely pop it.
- 3:16So go ahead and stream by now the shopping conspiracy
- 3:21on Netflix.
- 3:22And that'll do it for this week's PCJ Pop.
