- 0:00Hi everyone, Welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone and happy May 1st.
- 0:22Wow that is wild. So we have officially been doing
- 0:26Mini Scroll for a full month now.
- 0:29I can say it has absolutely destroyed my schedule.
- 0:34No, but in a good way. It's giving me so much purpose
- 0:37every day for real. It's been a bit of a struggle to
- 0:40find my rhythm, but I'm loving it so far.
- 0:42I hope you guys are loving it as well and I'm actually really
- 0:46excited because I think possibly starting Monday might be too
- 0:50soon. I think maybe starting probably
- 0:52mid next week or the week after I am going to be in a new studio
- 0:57space. So it's been a long time coming,
- 1:00but we have been recording the podcast at my house for the last
- 1:03year and a half since we started filming it basically and I have
- 1:07ripped the Band-Aid off and got ourselves a dedicated studio
- 1:12space that we will set up. So that will reinvigorate me.
- 1:15And I share this studio space with Sean's office.
- 1:19So when I record mini scroll, I basically have to make sure that
- 1:22like, he doesn't have a meeting or anything 'cause he works
- 1:24mostly from home. So it's been like quite a
- 1:26juggling act. I'm excited to have my own
- 1:29dedicated space. Anyways, let's get into these
- 1:31stories for today. So the first story is a little
- 1:35update from a story from yesterday.
- 1:38So Revolve has responded to the Stagecoach after party backlash.
- 1:44So yesterday we talked about the Pizza slime, Revolve, Stagecoach
- 1:47after party and how it basically went viral on TikTok because
- 1:51there were two lines at the entrance.
- 1:53One that said creators who have over 1,000,000 followers go this
- 1:55way and creators who have under a million followers go that way.
- 1:58Pizza slime, that's kind of their whole, their whole shtick,
- 2:01their St. Wear brand and they kind of poke
- 2:03fun at like influencer and celebrity culture.
- 2:05So people were kind of like maybe this is like a pizza slime
- 2:08shtick. But because they were
- 2:10collaborating with Revolve, who are known for being very, very
- 2:15exclusionary when it comes to the creators and the influencers
- 2:19that they work with and they kind of helped create that
- 2:21culture in the influencer space in general.
- 2:25It rubbed people the wrong way. So now Revolve has responded.
- 2:29They made a TikTok and they basically posted this video that
- 2:33said POV, you go viral, but it wasn't even your best sign.
- 2:37And then they posted a montage of some of the other signs at
- 2:41this event that we're like a trolling basically.
- 2:43So some of the signs that they posted included Princess Parking
- 2:47only and General Last parking at the parking lot.
- 2:50They had water bottles that you could they were selling or
- 2:54giving out water bottles that said vegan water.
- 2:58And they also had a sign for the bathroom that said pee pee poo
- 3:01poo. So I think it's safe to say that
- 3:04the 1,000,000 followers versus not 1,000,000 followers, those
- 3:08signs were part of like a bigger shtick that they were playing at
- 3:11this after party. But again, the collab between
- 3:15Pizza Slime and Revolve is really interesting and I feel
- 3:17like it's maybe showing that Revolve is self aware.
- 3:21Like they've received a lot of backlash in recent years,
- 3:24especially with TikTok. Like with the rise of TikTok,
- 3:27they didn't adapt, I think, very well to the changing influencer
- 3:32landscape when TikTok first popped off and they didn't
- 3:35really know how to include TikTok creators without getting
- 3:38like blasted online, you know, for kind of their shady
- 3:42influencer practices. That worked before with like
- 3:44YouTube and Instagram influencers.
- 3:46Because Revolve's peak was really around the time when,
- 3:49like influencer culture was very aspirational and there was this
- 3:52mystique around it. And TikTok really like lifted
- 3:55the veil on a lot of stuff. So Revolve was a little bit
- 3:58behind on that. So I think that this is actually
- 4:02a a good indicator this after party and kind of this like
- 4:05trolling. It's like a good indicator that
- 4:07Revolve is now ready to be a bit more self aware and they are
- 4:11adapting with the changes that come with influencer culture.
- 4:14Now with TikTok, the next story that I have for you guys is
- 4:19honestly absolutely enraging. I haven't felt this passionate
- 4:23and angry about a story in a very long time, but I'm going to
- 4:27be talking about how the beauty brand Euphoria is being called
- 4:30out by consumers for expanding their foundation shade range to
- 4:34include black face paint. And if you think that sounds
- 4:39bad, it gets 100 million times worse.
- 4:42So let's go. Last year Euphoria came under
- 4:45fire when it released a skin tint serum foundation with a
- 4:49very non inclusive shade range. The foundation had 15 shades,
- 4:53but the darkest shade was a golden brown.
- 4:56So off the back of this criticism, the Euphoria founder
- 4:59Fiona Co Chan made a TikTok in October which she has since
- 5:02deleted. She said the brand intended to
- 5:05extend the shade range before launch but wanted to test the
- 5:08products out with some initial shades.
- 5:10First quote. It was always my intention to
- 5:13launch this as a proof of concept to see if people even
- 5:16liked the base formula. I thought if the project was
- 5:18such a flop then we will have to start over.
- 5:21That is literally always the excuse.
- 5:24Just like off the bat that is always the excuse that anyone,
- 5:28whether it's fashion that's not being size inclusive or beauty
- 5:31that's not being shade inclusive.
- 5:32That is always the excuse either it's a money thing.
- 5:35It's like, well, we don't want to spend the money on creating
- 5:37you know, bigger sizes or like a full shade range.
- 5:40So we just created shades or sizes that are like our typical
- 5:43consumer quote UN quote or they'll say, you know, we didn't
- 5:46even know if this was going to work.
- 5:47So we just wanted to like release a few shades and test
- 5:50it. Well, why couldn't some of those
- 5:51shades be very, very dark shades?
- 5:54It's just such a cop out. I don't think anyone takes these
- 5:57excuses seriously anymore. But because they tie it into a
- 6:01business decision quote UN quote, they think it makes it
- 6:05easier for us to digest. Because I think they think that
- 6:07like we don't understand. I think that they they believe
- 6:11that they can like dupe the general consumer because we, you
- 6:14know, don't have our own brands, we don't know the insurance and
- 6:17outs of their finances. They think that's a viable
- 6:19excuse. OK anyways, so now the brand has
- 6:22launched 10 new shades of the foundation and people are even
- 6:26more mad because the darkest shade, Shade 600, is quite
- 6:30literally jet black. Like as black as my nail Polish.
- 6:35So the week of its launch, Euphoria sent a message to it's
- 6:38like Insider Crew, which is basically it's brand ambassadors
- 6:41writing seeing some confusion on our TikTok from people who are
- 6:44suggesting that our darkest shade of Foundation, Shade 600,
- 6:47is black face paint and not meant for real people.
- 6:50We created Shade 600 as part of our 10 Shade expansion this past
- 6:55March. We heard everyone loud and clear
- 6:57last October that our shades were not dark enough or
- 6:59inclusive enough. OK, so I think this is an
- 7:03interesting message to touch on because it shows that they
- 7:09expanded the shade ranges in response to the backlash as
- 7:13opposed to what Fiona initially said to us in her TikTok in
- 7:17October, which was that she always wanted to have a diverse
- 7:21shade range. But you know she just needed to
- 7:23test the formula and see if people even wanted the product.
- 7:25So this is a very telling post. The message also said that the
- 7:31shade didn't match anyone in the US, but claimed that Fiona
- 7:36visited Dubai while testing and found two people who the shade
- 7:42matched. OK, so there have been countless
- 7:44videos of creators trying the product and comparing it
- 7:47essentially to black face paint. And this comparison was
- 7:51confirmed by cosmetic chemist Javon Ford, who broke down the
- 7:54ingredients list for the darkest shade in a new TikTok video
- 7:58quote Here there is only one pigment, CI 77499, which is just
- 8:04black iron oxide, no other colorants.
- 8:07This foundation literally only has pure black pigment, he said.
- 8:12And then he did go on to correct himself in the comments, saying
- 8:15he missed quote a small amount of white added so Gray.
- 8:19They literally made the foundation dark Gray.
- 8:21But to make matters worse, the marketing campaign around this
- 8:25shade expansion was so racist. Like, I don't even know what
- 8:31other word to use because that is, in my opinion, exactly what
- 8:34it was. So when they released this
- 8:37expanded shade range, you know, they had a photo of all the
- 8:40different models. It was like a grid photo of all
- 8:42the different models wearing all the different shade ranges, like
- 8:45little squares, OK? And at the very end was shade
- 8:47600 and there was no model and it was just instead a black
- 8:52Swatch of like black paint basically.
- 8:55So everyone was like, what the fuck is this like?
- 8:58You couldn't even find a model with this skin tone.
- 9:00And it seems like that was intentional because they were
- 9:04trying to use this marketing collateral and create this like
- 9:07fun little series where they went, quote, UN quote in search
- 9:11of somebody who suits that skin tone to like be their campaign
- 9:15model. And then in this TikTok Fiona
- 9:17like goes to this photo store. They take pictures of this guy
- 9:20that she found and then she basically put him in as the
- 9:23model for the campaign. So somebody comment on this
- 9:25TikTok saying how did you find the other models through
- 9:28casting? I'm just confused as to why you
- 9:30couldn't find a model with a deeper skin tone.
- 9:32And then the brand responded saying hi.
- 9:34We held a casting call open to the public but didn't have any
- 9:38attendees who showed up that were within the 600 shade range,
- 9:41which is what led to this journey to find a 600 model with
- 9:44like this emoji. So everything Fiona said in
- 9:48October about this like being a proof of concept kind of test
- 9:52and learn thing with this foundation launch is completely
- 9:55contradicted now by this like quote UN quote marketing
- 9:58campaign where they tried to do this quirky fun little model
- 10:01search for shade 600. Because they are telling us that
- 10:04they did not create the shade with anyone in mind.
- 10:07They did not have anyone that they tested this product on.
- 10:11So there was no proof of concept for shade 600.
- 10:13So that tells me, in my opinion, that this whole marketing
- 10:19campaign around shade 600 and creating shade 600 in general,
- 10:23that is like a microaggression brought to life.
- 10:27Like, to me, this is just blatant racism.
- 10:30This is a brand being very pissed off that people were
- 10:35upset that their shade range was nowhere near deep enough and
- 10:38diverse enough back in October, and she's essentially punishing
- 10:44people of color for that feedback.
- 10:46And then the implication of doing this kind of like, you
- 10:51know, model search for shade 600 is what, that you couldn't find
- 10:56any dark skin models that you felt were worth paying like all
- 11:00of the other lighter skinned models.
- 11:02Is that what you're saying? Because I'm assuming that the
- 11:04man that ended up being the model wasn't paid, he was
- 11:07literally found on the street. But I think the overarching
- 11:10issue here bigger, I mean there's a million issues, but I
- 11:14think like the biggest one, at least in my opinion.
- 11:17And I would love to hear any feedback from you guys,
- 11:19especially if you are somebody that has a hard time finding
- 11:23your shade range. I would love to hear this.
- 11:24But you know, I think from my perspective, the bigger issue
- 11:28here is that this was such a disingenuous attempt, quote UN
- 11:32quote, at being inclusive. And these disingenuous attempts
- 11:36happen all the time, especially in the beauty industry.
- 11:39And they literally incite racism.
- 11:42Like now the comments of all of these creators who are trying
- 11:46shade 600 and saying this is literally just black pigment.
- 11:48This is black face paint. Their comments are filled with
- 11:52people being racist towards them.
- 11:54Saying like all you guys do is complain a brand makes a shade
- 11:57the darkest that they can and you still find something to arc
- 12:00up about. It opens the door for racist to
- 12:02be like nothing is ever good enough so why even try?
- 12:06And that in my opinion makes what euphoria has done here
- 12:12malicious. I believe it was intentional.
- 12:15I believe it was the brand, the founder throwing like basically
- 12:19a temper tantrum that people didn't like the initial shade
- 12:22range and they had some feedback about it.
- 12:25And this is honestly one of the most shocking things I think
- 12:31we've seen in the beauty community for a very, very long
- 12:33time. All right.
- 12:34And the last try that I have for you guys need to bring a bit of
- 12:37levity to this. Taylor Swift is allegedly going
- 12:42to be attending the Met Gala, so a few days ago TMZ reported that
- 12:46Taylor would not be attending the Met Gala despite obviously
- 12:49being invited. I'm sure she is invited every
- 12:51year. They also said that Travis
- 12:53Kelsey was invited but would not be attending.
- 12:56However, today Swifties are excited to see that a new report
- 12:59from Page 6 says that she will be attending, and the Page Six
- 13:04article also acknowledges the TMZ article that said that
- 13:08Taylor won't be attending. So it seems like their sources
- 13:11are probably pretty sure that Taylor is going to be going to
- 13:14the Met Gala. And I mean this is like kind of
- 13:16a nothing story. But she hasn't been to the Met
- 13:19Gala in 2016 and there are actually a few viral tik toks
- 13:22right now going around of people being like celebrities who used
- 13:25to go to the Met Gala but haven't gone in a while.
- 13:27And of course Taylor Swift is on that list.
- 13:29And there seems to be this trend where like quote UN quote,
- 13:32something happened in 2016 where that was like the last year that
- 13:36a lot of really mainstream celebrities went to the Met Gala
- 13:39and then they kind of stopped going.
- 13:40And my theory on that, I would love to hear your guys theory
- 13:44too. But my theory is that it's
- 13:46probably because 2016, if you think about what was happening
- 13:49in the influencer landscape, then this was the height of the
- 13:52YouTube beauty community. That is when influencer culture
- 13:54was starting to breakthrough to mainstream culture.
- 13:58So I believe this was probably, I would say it's probably like
- 14:0120/17/2018 when big influencers started getting invited to the
- 14:04Met Gala and I think the direction just kind of changed.
- 14:07It's not that I think celebrities started saying no to
- 14:11going to the Met Gala because influencers were attending,
- 14:13although I'm sure there are some that have started doing that.
- 14:16But I think it's more that typically to go to the Met Gala,
- 14:20a brand is inviting you because you buy like a table.
- 14:23So my, you know, theory here is basically that I assume that a
- 14:28lot of the brands that are buying tables and are typically
- 14:31inviting a list, celebrities just started inviting
- 14:34influencers instead. So yeah, I'm interested to see
- 14:36if she goes. I will do a Met Gala recap next
- 14:39week. Regardless.
- 14:40I don't know how I'll do it, but I will figure it out.
- 14:43Anyways, guys, that's it for today.
- 14:45Thank you so much for listening to Mini Scroll.
- 14:47Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 14:49It helps me so much. It helps me grow.
- 14:52I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 14:54Bye.
