- 0:00Speaker 1: I do think, just based on how everything comes full
- 0:03Speaker 1: circle in this world we live in now, I wouldn't
- 0:06Speaker 1: be surprised if aliens exist, but they were also on
- 0:09Speaker 1: Epstein Island. It's all somehow interconnected.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I think an advanced society would understand how the media
- 0:17Speaker 2: landscape works. If you want to stay hidden, it's not
- 0:20Speaker 2: that you hide behind the mountains or escape back to
- 0:22Speaker 2: your planet.
- 0:22Speaker 3: You just go to Epstein Island and trust.
- 0:25Speaker 2: That the people in power will keep those files hidden
- 0:27Speaker 2: and nobody will ever find out about you.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to The Precap, a daily show podcast
- 0:33Speaker 1: where we sit down with this week's host to recap
- 0:35Speaker 1: some of the latest news and preview what's coming up next.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I'm Scott Herkman, a writer at the show, and I'm
- 0:40Speaker 1: joined today by your host this week, Mr. Jordan Klepper.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Hello everybody, happy to precap for you.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm very excited to be here.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Scott, you've been here for a while.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I've worked at the show almost 10 years. People don't
- 0:54Speaker 1: know that by my face, usually.
- 0:56Speaker 2: You look very young.
- 0:57Speaker 1: They think I'm a PA.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you look like a PA.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:00Speaker 3: You have the air of somebody without authority or status.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Exactly. That's how I look at myself every day when
- 1:05Speaker 1: I walk into this building. But I was actually a
- 1:07Speaker 1: PA when you started at The Daily Show, which was
- 1:09Speaker 1: super exciting. I remember your first couple months there. Very vividly.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I've always wanted to ask you this, and I never have,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and now I finally have the courage to because I'm
- 1:19Speaker 1: allowed to speak.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Because there's cameras on us?
- 1:20Speaker 1: Because there's cameras on us, yes.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Because usually you won't talk to me when we run
- 1:24Speaker 2: into each other in the hallways, and that's sort of
- 1:26Speaker 2: by design, contractually.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I believe.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you're too tall for me also. I'm scared. It
- 1:30Speaker 1: is a height issue. My neck doesn't go that high.
- 1:32Speaker 2: You can tell that you were brought on in the
- 1:34Speaker 2: first John era because.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Of your height. Yes, yes, Jewish and height. They're like,
- 1:37Speaker 1: this person is perfect to be a VA at The
- 1:39Speaker 1: Daily Show. But- My first year, when it was your
- 1:43Speaker 1: first year also, I feel like every chat you did
- 1:46Speaker 1: was you being mangled or physically harmed in insane ways.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And as a PA, I didn't know what was going
- 1:53Speaker 1: to be on the show. And it'd be like, oh,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Jordan Kleber's coming down to the studio. And you would
- 1:57Speaker 1: have like a waffle iron burn on your face or
- 1:59Speaker 1: like green all over you. Did you feel like they
- 2:03Speaker 1: were just trying to injure you?
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's so interesting you bring that up because I think
- 2:08Speaker 2: I blocked out most of that partially because... because it
- 2:12Speaker 2: somehow affected who I am as a person, that they
- 2:14Speaker 2: were just like, this is a piece of meat that
- 2:16Speaker 2: we can make look ugly and strange, so let's do
- 2:19Speaker 2: exactly that. And at the time, I believe, Jason Jones
- 2:22Speaker 2: was like, I don't want to do these pieces.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Give it to the new kid.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I was so grateful, still am very grateful that I
- 2:27Speaker 2: had the opportunity to be on the show, but I
- 2:29Speaker 2: was sort of a blank canvas. Again, a blank canvas,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I think, with the bare minimum amount of respect.
- 2:35Speaker 3: So if the joke was.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Waffle iron to the face.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Let's paint this weird, gangly person, waffle iron the face,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and then put them on camera. And that, I do think,
- 2:46Speaker 2: is always a weapon of comedy, is a lack of
- 2:51Speaker 2: conventional attractiveness.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I think we're too harsh on yourself.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I feel confident enough to say that, but my gangly
- 3:00Speaker 2: weirdness was utilized by the great writers at the show.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So in your head, it was, I already look weird
- 3:06Speaker 1: at Please make me weirder so that it's funny.
- 3:10Speaker 2: At some point, putting a waffle iron and a bunch
- 3:12Speaker 2: of feathers on me. If I recall that bit, I
- 3:15Speaker 2: have in mind, I think that was like a Home
- 3:16Speaker 2: Alone reference of having to get maybe into the White
- 3:19Speaker 2: House or something and being attacked by Home Alone weaponry
- 3:24Speaker 2: and then doing a report. What the hell happened?
- 3:33Speaker 4: Security is super tight here, John. I tried to enter
- 3:36Speaker 4: through the North Portico, but the steps were mysteriously covered
- 3:39Speaker 4: in ice. As I slipped, I grabbed onto a doorknob, which,
- 3:44Speaker 4: to my surprise, was scaldingly hot. So I tried the
- 3:48Speaker 4: back entrance, but when I opened the door, a bucket
- 3:50Speaker 4: of glue fell on my head, causing me to stumble
- 3:53Speaker 4: into a trip wire that activated a feather cannon.
- 4:00Speaker 2: The iron mark on your face? Oh, just had some
- 4:03Speaker 2: trouble ironing this morning.
- 4:05Speaker 1: All right.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Actually, this brings up another question now I have for you.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Now as a writer on the show, going from intern
- 4:12Speaker 2: to PA to writer on the show, one of the
- 4:14Speaker 2: funniest writers we have. Oh, wow. We're done. I have
- 4:19Speaker 2: a list in my office. You're number eight, for sure. Perfect.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Number eight.
- 4:21Speaker 1: That's still top nine.
- 4:23Speaker 2: I wonder what number I was going to pick on.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You thought eight. That's good. You'll take it. As a
- 4:28Speaker 2: very funny writer on The Daily Show, you get to
- 4:31Speaker 2: utilize the bodies of all the correspondents and hosts for
- 4:35Speaker 2: comedic purposes.
- 4:36Speaker 3: What do you see as your palette?
- 4:38Speaker 2: Who is the most interesting to put in weird physical situations?
- 4:43Speaker 1: You guys all do it tremendously. If I was ranking it,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you're definitely in the top seven or eight. I'm not
- 4:49Speaker 1: sure how many correspondents we have. But yeah, I think
- 4:52Speaker 1: that's probably the most fun we have at the show
- 4:55Speaker 1: when it's like, oh, we're going to put Jordan in
- 4:57Speaker 1: something crazy today. I can think of at least three
- 5:00Speaker 1: examples I've done with you. You were in a Superman
- 5:02Speaker 1: costume once.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That was a great one, yes.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You were in.
- 5:05Speaker 1: What were you, that denim bachelorette jacket?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Oh, is that the one that had a, there was
- 5:11Speaker 2: something on the back?
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, in bedazzled denim, we do so many of these.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Oh, I think that was a Cash Patel reference to
- 5:17Speaker 2: a super tight jacket. Yes, yes.
- 5:20Speaker 1: So we put you in a girl's bachelorette jacket. And
- 5:22Speaker 1: then I remember you wore a giant cowboy hat that said,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I heart boobs. And that's got to be one of
- 5:27Speaker 1: my favorite bits.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Do you remember Joe Biden shared a MAGA hat with somebody?
- 5:32Speaker 1: So we did the bit where you and Kosta are
- 5:33Speaker 1: trading hats.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yes, that's right. I heart boobs.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And you were like, oh, I'm going to trade you
- 5:40Speaker 1: my favorite hat. I heart boobs cowboy hat.
- 5:42Speaker 2: There's so many good hat bits. One of my favorite
- 5:45Speaker 2: bits was with Hasan Minhaj back in the day where
- 5:48Speaker 2: we were wearing team One Direction or No Direction. It
- 5:52Speaker 2: was a joke about the band One Direction, but also
- 5:55Speaker 2: about pigs who were stuck in chutes and were being
- 5:58Speaker 2: led to slaughter and could only move in one direction.
- 6:01Speaker 2: And then perhaps my favorite physical bit is i we
- 6:04Speaker 2: i was on a did a piece in the virgin
- 6:06Speaker 2: island where i was walking along the shore and the
- 6:09Speaker 2: joke was that i was i kept buying uh local
- 6:13Speaker 2: like novelty t-shirts like female body inspector what have you
- 6:16Speaker 2: and it was the shirts kept changing as i walked
- 6:19Speaker 2: along the shore and so they got more and more
- 6:21Speaker 2: like offensive and touristy and by the end i was
- 6:23Speaker 2: i was sporting shorts a visor and a shirt that
- 6:26Speaker 2: just said tits on it a lot of boob jokes
- 6:29Speaker 2: a lot of boob you realize yeah okay it's We
- 6:32Speaker 2: love genitalia here, and we love body disfigurement. We use
- 6:36Speaker 2: it to satirize the world that we're in.
- 6:40Speaker 1: What an eloquent way to put, my feeling is, it's
- 6:42Speaker 1: just funny.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It is funny.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Boobs and penises, they are still the baseline of what
- 6:50Speaker 2: we do here.
- 6:50Speaker 1: All right, we should probably talk about what's happening in
- 6:52Speaker 1: the news this week. We are still in the middle
- 6:55Speaker 1: of a war. Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest offer.
- 6:58Speaker 1: to end the war. And there's also an Atlantic article
- 7:01Speaker 1: that says Donald Trump is reportedly bored with the war.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Spoiler. Shocker.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Yeah, shocker of the year. Who would have thought Donald Trump,
- 7:10Speaker 1: a man with laser focus, would get bored with something
- 7:14Speaker 1: he's doing?
- 7:15Speaker 2: He loves to see things through till the end. So
- 7:17Speaker 2: this is really, it's really devastating to people who haven't
- 7:21Speaker 2: been paying attention. Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Now that it needs more strategy, he's just like, nah,
- 7:25Speaker 1: too much work.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I mean, interesting, but not at all surprising with this man.
- 7:28Speaker 2: This is definitely the kind of guy that was like, ah,
- 7:30Speaker 2: we were able to pluck a South American leader and
- 7:34Speaker 2: steal him and bring him over here. And it seems
- 7:35Speaker 2: like everybody forgot about that because, you know, news and
- 7:39Speaker 2: everybody's a goldfish in a bowl. So what if we
- 7:41Speaker 2: just do that over there in Iran? And now it
- 7:43Speaker 2: seems to be a bit more complicated. He looks bored.
- 7:48Speaker 2: If you read his true socials, if you hear him
- 7:50Speaker 2: hop off a helicopter and talk. I was in D.C.
- 7:53Speaker 3: This weekend.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I did a show on Friday at the lovely Warner
- 7:56Speaker 2: Theater and the wonderful people of D.C., were warm and kind.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Thank you to lovely Washington, D.C. But I was staying
- 8:03Speaker 2: right next to the White House and you could very
- 8:08Speaker 2: much see that it is a construction project happening. You
- 8:11Speaker 2: see this ballroom is being built. I was watching cement
- 8:14Speaker 2: trucks go in and out of the White House, which
- 8:18Speaker 2: to me articulated something that I don't think I had
- 8:20Speaker 2: noticed until I really was right then and there is
- 8:22Speaker 2: this man is living next to a construction project, which
- 8:25Speaker 2: Donald Trump has for his entire life. But Just imagine
- 8:29Speaker 2: having the role of President of the United States and
- 8:30Speaker 2: understanding that you're going to make some of the most
- 8:33Speaker 2: consequential decisions in anyone's lifetime. And there's been another article
- 8:40Speaker 2: that came out recently that saw himself as one of
- 8:42Speaker 2: the most important people who's ever lived. He sees himself
- 8:46Speaker 2: as one of the most important and consequential people who's
- 8:47Speaker 2: ever lived. And he chooses... to instead of create a
- 8:52Speaker 2: space where he can be alone with his own thoughts
- 8:54Speaker 2: and perhaps think through things, he chooses to create a
- 8:57Speaker 2: space that is nothing but jackhammers.
- 8:59Speaker 1: It's like white noise for him.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It relaxes him. I just need chaos. So I don't
- 9:03Speaker 2: have to confront who I am as a human being.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Can you just add a jackhammer outside here for the
- 9:08Speaker 2: entirety of my entire time that I am president of
- 9:10Speaker 2: the United States?
- 9:11Speaker 1: And you know at night he's like sneaking out to
- 9:13Speaker 1: the construction site with a hammer like, He's loving it.
- 9:18Speaker 1: By the way, they're also not supposed to be working
- 9:20Speaker 1: on it right now. You said there's just trucks all
- 9:24Speaker 1: day long.
- 9:25Speaker 2: They're going in and out. There's giant cranes. Walking through D.C.,
- 9:29Speaker 2: there's so much construction happening on the Reflecting Pool, all
- 9:33Speaker 2: across the National Mall. Walking by the White House, you
- 9:35Speaker 2: can't even get a good look at the White House.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'm sure there are safety concerns that are there, but
- 9:39Speaker 2: also there's just so much construction going in and out.
- 9:42Speaker 2: It is not a space that is built for people
- 9:45Speaker 2: to contemplate their actions. Whichever, there was a city where
- 9:50Speaker 2: perhaps we could, you know, ergonomically develop it so that
- 9:53Speaker 2: people could sit with the consequences of their own ideas.
- 9:57Speaker 2: We would aim for that to be the case, but eh.
- 10:00Speaker 2: we got.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Check out this bulldozer.
- 10:02Speaker 2: We got a UFC fight coming. We better put up
- 10:04Speaker 2: those stands, y'all.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Which we were talking about also, like Trump is clearly
- 10:11Speaker 1: bored by almost everything. The fact that he's kind of
- 10:15Speaker 1: just like doing a little bit of everything and then
- 10:17Speaker 1: moving on, you know, like this week, He released the
- 10:20Speaker 1: UFO files. And that was just... Here's Wednesday. Here, tell
- 10:24Speaker 1: me what's in them. He literally said, you go through them,
- 10:27Speaker 1: tell me what's in them.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's not even vetting it. He just let it
- 10:31Speaker 2: out to the masses. I think he had a truth
- 10:33Speaker 2: that said, figure out what the heck is in here.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Go on, have fun. He's throwing chum. It's just chum.
- 10:41Speaker 2: It's like, go take a look. And it also shows you,
- 10:43Speaker 2: we're not talking about the UFO files.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Partially because.
- 10:47Speaker 2: From my understanding, there's not any huge bombshells, although I'm
- 10:49Speaker 2: excited because this week we have Neil deGrasse Tyson on,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and we're going to go through those and talk about
- 10:54Speaker 2: what Neil sees, what we might be missing.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He said there's not evidence of aliens.
- 11:00Speaker 3: DeGrasse Tyson says that.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, which I think is he's nervous there's someone who's
- 11:04Speaker 1: weirder about space than he is. He doesn't want them
- 11:07Speaker 1: coming down. If you can ask him that, hey, are
- 11:09Speaker 1: you afraid the aliens will supplant you as the weirdest
- 11:12Speaker 1: dude about space?
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yeah. So should I, should I, Neil, as Scott would
- 11:16Speaker 2: call you, the weirdest guy I've ever seen. Is that
- 11:17Speaker 2: just because he has an interest in space that you
- 11:19Speaker 2: see it as peculiar?
- 11:21Speaker 1: I find it peculiar that he's so anti-alien now. Did
- 11:25Speaker 1: you think? Because he's obsessed with space. Why wouldn't he
- 11:28Speaker 1: want to speak to experts? He's an astrophysicist. Why wouldn't
- 11:32Speaker 1: he want to get more information from the aliens on
- 11:34Speaker 1: what else is out there?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Do you think of Stephen Hawking, was he someone who
- 11:37Speaker 2: was Obsessed with physics or weird about physics? Is that
- 11:40Speaker 2: how you would have framed Stephen Hawking?
- 11:41Speaker 1: I would not disrespect Epstein Island local Stephen Hawking.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Wow, shots fired on Hawking. Is LeBron James weird about
- 11:49Speaker 2: sports or dribbling?
- 11:50Speaker 1: No, sports is awesome.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Sports is awesome.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Do you believe in aliens? Would you expect there to
- 11:58Speaker 2: have been something, some smoking gun or I guess frothing
- 12:02Speaker 2: orb to be in those files?
- 12:04Speaker 1: I looked at the files and... I can be convinced
- 12:07Speaker 1: either way on both. Either I'm looking at a sophisticated
- 12:10Speaker 1: piece of technology or this is a balloon that's floating
- 12:12Speaker 1: in a weird way. Space is gigantic. I don't know
- 12:15Speaker 1: what's going on there. I'm not smart like Neil deGrasse Tyson.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Respect to his name. There's got to be something.
- 12:23Speaker 2: There's got to be something out there. Yeah, I'm optimistic
- 12:26Speaker 2: there's something out there. Although I don't buy the fact
- 12:28Speaker 2: that if there was something out there, it came here.
- 12:30Speaker 2: shook for a little while 50 years ago, we caught
- 12:33Speaker 2: a picture, and then we never saw it again.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, they were like, nah, not interested in what's going
- 12:37Speaker 1: on here. I do think, just based on how everything
- 12:40Speaker 1: comes full circle in this world we live in now,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I wouldn't be surprised if aliens exist, but they were
- 12:46Speaker 1: also on Epstein Island. You know, it's all somehow interconnected.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I think an advanced society would understand how The media
- 12:55Speaker 2: landscape works. And so if you want to stay hidden,
- 12:57Speaker 2: it's not that you hide behind the mountains or escape
- 12:59Speaker 2: back to your planet.
- 13:00Speaker 3: You just go to Epstein Island and trust that the.
- 13:03Speaker 2: People in power will keep those files hidden and nobody
- 13:05Speaker 2: will ever find out about you.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 3: These aliens are smart.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Even more things Trump's doing now that he's bored. He's
- 13:10Speaker 1: complaining about the NFL kickoff rule, which it's not even
- 13:13Speaker 1: NFL season. We're in the middle of a war he started.
- 13:18Speaker 1: What do you think about the kickoff? I mean, that's
- 13:19Speaker 1: the most important thing we could be discussing right now.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Well, I think it's something that if you were complaining
- 13:24Speaker 2: about the NFL kickoff rule during the NBA playoffs, you
- 13:28Speaker 2: are an old man with nothing better to do.
- 13:30Speaker 3: My guess, he has something better to do.
- 13:32Speaker 2: First of all, though, I'm so glad Trump is focused
- 13:35Speaker 2: on this as opposed to other things. Let the old
- 13:37Speaker 2: man spin in a corner. Let him build a ballroom.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Let him bitch about The wings for the big Super
- 13:42Speaker 2: Bowl that's coming up next year. Like, great.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I think that's going to give some other countries ways
- 13:48Speaker 2: in which they can figure out how to defend themselves
- 13:51Speaker 2: against our worst instincts. So I'm all good for that.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I also don't think a lot about the NFL kickoff world.
- 13:58Speaker 2: It seems like it was put in place to stop
- 14:00Speaker 2: murders from happening on the field.
- 14:02Speaker 3: That seems to be a good thing.
- 14:03Speaker 1: It's probably the least exciting part of the game, and
- 14:06Speaker 1: it's somehow the only thing Trump wants to talk about. Just.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Which is what... Help me out here. The NFL kickoff
- 14:13Speaker 2: rule is essentially they've staggered the way in which people
- 14:16Speaker 2: can run down the field when the ball is kicked
- 14:18Speaker 2: because of head injuries, right?
- 14:20Speaker 1: Because of... So there weren't a lot of kickoffs. This
- 14:23Speaker 1: is why I'm on the podcast because we're talking sports.
- 14:25Speaker 3: We're talking sports.
- 14:25Speaker 1: This is the only reason they invite me on the podcast.
- 14:28Speaker 2: They.
- 14:30Speaker 1: People were fair catching all the kicks because of all
- 14:32Speaker 1: the injuries. So in order to create some action on
- 14:35Speaker 1: the kickoff, they created this rule that makes it safer
- 14:38Speaker 1: for the players and maybe... the team tries to run
- 14:41Speaker 1: it back for a touchdown. To try to create more excitement,
- 14:44Speaker 1: which I think it has, but somehow Trump has turned
- 14:46Speaker 1: this into like, I'm not ending the war with Iran
- 14:50Speaker 1: unless the NFL gives up the kickoff rule.
- 14:52Speaker 2: This man, he's such a unique human being, but everything,
- 14:56Speaker 2: you can zoom in on everything about Donald Trump and
- 14:59Speaker 2: it articulates something about what is so uniquely broken about
- 15:02Speaker 2: this human being. Because I think about that kickoff rule
- 15:06Speaker 2: and You know, I love watching a football game, but
- 15:10Speaker 2: if you watch a football game, you're inundated with commercials.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And the one thing we know about kickoffs is they
- 15:15Speaker 2: always happen in between commercials. They're the easiest thing to
- 15:19Speaker 2: miss if you're at all engaged in something other than
- 15:22Speaker 2: watching advertisements beamed into your eyes. If you have friends,
- 15:25Speaker 2: you're talking to friends and you miss the kickoff. If
- 15:28Speaker 2: you have bodily needs for food, you're eating wings before
- 15:32Speaker 2: coming back to the kickoff.
- 15:33Speaker 3: If you have family members.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Or children who are playing, you're playing with your child,
- 15:37Speaker 2: the game comes back, you've missed the kickoff. So the
- 15:39Speaker 2: only people who are truly that invested in the kickoff
- 15:42Speaker 2: are people who are not spending their time with family, friends, communicating,
- 15:47Speaker 2: or feeding themselves. They are instead watching advertisements and propaganda
- 15:51Speaker 2: beamed into their eyes, and they are obsessed with the
- 15:53Speaker 2: little minutia of the game in front of them.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Which goes back to Trump is bored and alone in
- 15:57Speaker 1: the White House.
- 15:58Speaker 2: He is bored and alone in the White House. Get
- 16:01Speaker 2: this man a worthwhile hobby.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Well, I said to you earlier, I think the way
- 16:06Speaker 1: the East Wing got destroyed was one night he was
- 16:08Speaker 1: walking around thinking, I don't like this wall here. He
- 16:11Speaker 1: just took a hammer.
- 16:13Speaker 2: The man tinkers. The whole wall with the auto pen,
- 16:17Speaker 2: that's a tinker. That's a tinker. You got the... I mean,
- 16:20Speaker 2: the signage outside the Oval Office is the most low-class
- 16:23Speaker 2: funny shit to put Oval Office outside the Oval Office
- 16:27Speaker 2: like it's a ballroom at the Sheridan.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But that's the tinkering man. It's a man who can't sleep.
- 16:32Speaker 2: It's a man whose wife doesn't want Him in bed,
- 16:35Speaker 2: it's a man with no children who are calling them.
- 16:36Speaker 2: It's a man who walks around, and yeah, he's hammering,
- 16:39Speaker 2: he's touching. There's also a report, I believe, of him
- 16:42Speaker 2: sticking up challenge coins onto doors.
- 16:46Speaker 1: What does that mean?
- 16:47Speaker 2: There's challenge coins that are often handed out. Veterans often
- 16:50Speaker 2: will hand them out, or people have been in the military.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I think some people work for governmental offices, get coins with, like,
- 16:56Speaker 2: the presidential seal. His would have the seal on it,
- 16:58Speaker 2: I assume, and his name, often handed out to people
- 17:01Speaker 2: who would visit the White House or.
- 17:05Speaker 2: They're pretty and thick pieces of coinage that he sticks up.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I mean, the man's got like a glue gun and
- 17:13Speaker 2: puts it on the door.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Take the glue gun away from him.
- 17:16Speaker 2: He's adorning too many things. Why is this man so
- 17:19Speaker 2: into adorning?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Why does he have a toolkit that he can put
- 17:22Speaker 1: these things up?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Get this 80-year-old man some decoupage so he can be
- 17:26Speaker 2: a normal weird old person.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Two months ago, he said on camera, They'll say Trump
- 17:33Speaker 1: wants it quick and he'll get bored. But don't worry,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I never get bored. And now there's reports he's bored.
- 17:41Speaker 1: It's like he's just walking around doing nothing.
- 17:46Speaker 2: That may have been the first contradiction in the things
- 17:48Speaker 2: that Trump has said that I've ever heard him say.
- 17:50Speaker 3: And frankly, I think the man's slipping.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Yeah, he's slipping.
- 17:53Speaker 2: He's slipping.
- 17:55Speaker 1: He should not get that third term.
- 17:57Speaker 2: He should not. He's got a bunker to wait it out.
- 18:00Speaker 3: But I.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I hope the American people finally see maybe he's not
- 18:03Speaker 2: the man for the job.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Another thing going on in the news is the Hanta virus.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Are you concerned?
- 18:13Speaker 2: As somebody who has worked on a cruise ship, done
- 18:19Speaker 2: sketch comedy on a cruise ship, which is perhaps the
- 18:22Speaker 2: most noble thing to do.
- 18:23Speaker 1: On a cruise ship. And you came to do this show?
- 18:26Speaker 2: I did.
- 18:26Speaker 3: At this point, I was like, I've... I've served the people.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I've given them what they wanted, which is short-form comedy
- 18:31Speaker 2: and sketch comedy in an open-air arena to a bunch
- 18:35Speaker 2: of people who leave halfway through to go see the
- 18:38Speaker 2: sleight-of-hand magic show that's happening next door.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Was it only cruise ship-based sketches, or you guys did
- 18:44Speaker 1: other stuff?
- 18:44Speaker 2: Great question. It was material culled from the Second City's
- 18:48Speaker 2: archives that I believe had some classic relationship dramas, some
- 18:54Speaker 2: short-form physical bits. And some original material written for the
- 18:59Speaker 2: cruise ship. What you realize when you're doing comedy on
- 19:01Speaker 2: a cruise ship is you have a lot of non-English
- 19:03Speaker 2: speakers as well, so you have to do a lot
- 19:04Speaker 2: of physical comedy.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Got it.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Going back to, again, adorn me. Put me in something
- 19:09Speaker 2: weird and let me shake it for a bunch of people.
- 19:12Speaker 2: who have neurovirus. And I will make you laugh until
- 19:16Speaker 2: your body has explosive diarrhea because of the uncooked chicken
- 19:20Speaker 2: you had an hour and a half earlier.
- 19:21Speaker 1: At least, at least while their body has diarrhea, they're
- 19:24Speaker 1: laughing to whatever you're doing on stage.
- 19:26Speaker 2: That's what they're doing. They're laughing to keep them thinking like, oh,
- 19:29Speaker 2: should I have eaten all of that soft serve? I
- 19:31Speaker 2: don't think so. So I, I've lived, I've lived that life. I'm,
- 19:36Speaker 2: It seems as if we've been told over and over
- 19:38Speaker 2: again this is not something we need to worry about.
- 19:40Speaker 2: So I'm going to choose to worry about other things
- 19:43Speaker 2: like the NFL kickoff rule.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Because if we look at our commander-in-chief, there are more
- 19:49Speaker 3: important things on the docket.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Are you nervous?
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'm nervous that people keep going on cruise ships. I
- 19:55Speaker 1: feel like, at some point, we've got to, as a society, say, hey,
- 20:00Speaker 1: not worth it.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Bad idea. Yeah. People get sick of it, although that's
- 20:06Speaker 2: part of the risk. I guess you can get those
- 20:07Speaker 2: deals on cruise ships, and part of it is because,
- 20:09Speaker 2: you know what, you're rolling the dice.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, now's the time to buy, so maybe I'll
- 20:13Speaker 1: buy a few cruise ships.
- 20:15Speaker 3: This would be the time.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Should we invest in a cruise ship?
- 20:18Speaker 3: You want to invest?
- 20:19Speaker 2: Didn't Pete Davidson do that with a ferry at one point?
- 20:24Speaker 2: They haven't figured it out yet.
- 20:26Speaker 1: But we already have the entertainment.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Maybe we could buy the Staten Island Ferry from Colin
- 20:30Speaker 2: Jost and Pete Davidson.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Turn it into a Disney cruise.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Turn it into a Disney cruise.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Then just print money at that point.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Come for the Hantavirus. Stay for the Jordan Klepper short
- 20:42Speaker 1: form sketch comedy.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It was great. All physical comedy. Look at this weird,
- 20:47Speaker 2: strange looking man shaking his stuff for your benefit.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I will invest but not go on the cruise.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I'm going to look for somebody to take my place
- 20:57Speaker 2: as well.
- 20:58Speaker 1: All right, let's look ahead to this week and what's
- 21:00Speaker 1: coming up that you might cover on the show. Trump
- 21:02Speaker 1: is going to China. What do you think? You think
- 21:06Speaker 1: he's going to get the deal done?
- 21:08Speaker 3: Oh, that may.
- 21:10Speaker 2: It sounds like he's bringing a bunch of CEOs. If
- 21:13Speaker 2: he ends up taking the trip to China, perhaps he does.
- 21:16Speaker 2: We will cover that. I'm curious. I think we're going
- 21:19Speaker 2: to hear big talk, big deals. Seems like we're not
- 21:22Speaker 2: in the making deals phase of the Trump presidency.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He's bringing an entourage with him of all the top
- 21:30Speaker 1: CEOs thinking that would help. Why aren't these CEOs running
- 21:37Speaker 1: their companies? Why are they?
- 21:39Speaker 2: They do. That is one of the benefits of this
- 21:43Speaker 2: Trump administration is we get to see the travel plans
- 21:47Speaker 2: of America's biggest CEOs.
- 21:49Speaker 3: I guess the globe's biggest CEOs. Especially those first few months.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It was like Mark Zuckerberg spent a lot of time
- 21:54Speaker 2: in Mar-a-Lago, Washington, D.C., hanging out also at like boring dinners.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Apparently that's part of the job is to kiss the
- 22:03Speaker 2: ass of the person in charge and or just eat
- 22:05Speaker 2: bad chicken.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, because we didn't see that first term. First term
- 22:08Speaker 1: CEOs seem to like step away. All right, we're going
- 22:10Speaker 1: to wait this out and see what happens. But now
- 22:11Speaker 1: that he won this term, it feels like they're all
- 22:15Speaker 1: coming out and they're all pledging money to the ballroom
- 22:17Speaker 1: that either they're paying for or we're paying for. Still unclear.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Imagine that.
- 22:24Speaker 2: If you take the politics out of it, your CEO,
- 22:27Speaker 2: you've achieved massive amounts of success, at least financially. You've probably,
- 22:32Speaker 2: you've probably done it in unorthodox and perhaps immoral ways.
- 22:35Speaker 3: But you know what?
- 22:36Speaker 2: You've done it. You've achieved the American dream. You have
- 22:39Speaker 2: financial freedom. You can do what you want. And they're like, also,
- 22:42Speaker 2: you have to hang out with this 80 year old
- 22:44Speaker 2: man who eats McDonald's, his farts smell bad, and he
- 22:46Speaker 2: wants you to come to all of these meetings so
- 22:48Speaker 2: you can be an embarrassing prop for photos.
- 22:50Speaker 3: He's like, oh, so I have to do that once?
- 22:51Speaker 3: It's like, No, you'll probably have to do that every
- 22:53Speaker 3: week and a half.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and there's a good chance that he just thinks
- 22:56Speaker 1: your last name is the company you work for. Exactly. Oh, look,
- 23:00Speaker 1: it's Tim Bowen over here.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Oh, look, Jim Palantir's over here. Come on over here, Jim.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Oh, come on, Jimmy Target. This guy, he does the
- 23:06Speaker 1: best targets. Paul Walmart, get your ass in here. Come on.
- 23:10Speaker 2: These poor, poor billionaires.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It's not even worth being a billionaire anymore.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I thought I was going to have fun.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I was going to bounce around to private islands. Occasionally
- 23:19Speaker 2: hop on a Zoom call where I give some financial advice.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Instead, look at this.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I'm hanging out with Grandpa over here, bitching about the
- 23:26Speaker 2: NFL nonstop.
- 23:29Speaker 1: For the last time, I have nothing to do with
- 23:30Speaker 1: the NFL. Stop telling me.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I'm not Roger NFL. I told you this. That's not
- 23:35Speaker 2: who I am. All right.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Well, to the big thing that's happening this week, the
- 23:41Speaker 1: real reason I'm on this podcast is because the New
- 23:45Speaker 1: York Knicks are going to the Eastern Conference. Me and
- 23:50Speaker 1: you are two of the biggest Knicks fans in the office.
- 23:53Speaker 1: I say that because we wear Knicks gear year-round.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Fashionable Knicks gear. I've followed your Knicks gear apparel choices.
- 24:02Speaker 3: You have good ones.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you. I pride myself on that. If
- 24:05Speaker 1: my writing is top eight, my Knicks gear is top one.
- 24:08Speaker 2: You are.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I think you're number one Knicks fan in the office.
- 24:11Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's up. Definitely. I didn't know it was a question.
- 24:17Speaker 2: It is exciting to be in New York when the
- 24:19Speaker 2: Knicks are winning. Totally. I grew up a Michigan fan,
- 24:25Speaker 2: a fan of a lot of the franchises from that area,
- 24:28Speaker 2: and I have no shame. I have loved a lot
- 24:32Speaker 2: of different teams, usually based on my location. I lived
- 24:35Speaker 2: in Michigan and still have a lot of love for
- 24:38Speaker 2: Michigan-based teams.
- 24:38Speaker 3: I love the Pistons.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I'm rooting for the Pistons to To play the Knicks,
- 24:42Speaker 2: but then I'm going to have to root for the Knicks.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I want the Pistons to do well. I was a
- 24:47Speaker 2: fan of a lot of Chicago teams when I played
- 24:48Speaker 2: there as well. I've become such a fan of what
- 24:53Speaker 2: sports can do to a community when teams win. My
- 24:56Speaker 2: buddy Seth is a Celtics fan, and he lives here
- 24:59Speaker 2: in New York and has a kid who's here in
- 25:02Speaker 2: New York. And I'm like, I know you want the
- 25:05Speaker 2: Knicks to lose because that is part of who you are,
- 25:07Speaker 2: but If they win, there's something so beautiful about wearing
- 25:12Speaker 2: a Knicks hat, going into a bodega, and talking about
- 25:16Speaker 2: Josh Hart to whoever sees you wearing that hat. A
- 25:20Speaker 2: winning team showing that you support that team in a town,
- 25:23Speaker 2: it just elevates every conversation. You meet your neighbors.
- 25:26Speaker 1: People yell, let's go Knicks at you. Oh, let's go Knicks.
- 25:28Speaker 1: It's amazing. You get to just scream it back. People
- 25:31Speaker 1: at this office who I've never spoken to before are like,
- 25:33Speaker 1: so Scott, how are you feeling about the Knicks? And
- 25:35Speaker 1: I'm like, I'll talk to you for the next two
- 25:37Speaker 1: hours about the Knicks. Let's go. Deuce McBride. He had
- 25:40Speaker 1: a great game.
- 25:41Speaker 2: This is the thing. I'm a Michigan fan. I wear
- 25:43Speaker 2: any Michigan apparel all over the globe. If you pass
- 25:45Speaker 2: somebody with a Michigan hat on or shirt, they say,
- 25:48Speaker 2: go blue. My wife is always like, what is it
- 25:50Speaker 2: with you weirdos? But it's such a life-affirming thing. Not
- 25:54Speaker 2: to make everything about politics, but there is something about
- 25:58Speaker 2: putting on the hat of the team you root for
- 25:59Speaker 2: and seeing people in the wild wearing that hat that
- 26:02Speaker 2: makes you feel like you are a part of something
- 26:04Speaker 2: larger than The MAGA movement, they got the freaking hats.
- 26:08Speaker 1: The hats. They nailed it with the hats.
- 26:10Speaker 3: And it's how you feel when you go to an
- 26:11Speaker 3: event like that. It's like how I feel.
- 26:13Speaker 2: You go to MSG and you wear the hat. You
- 26:15Speaker 2: go to outside Michigan Stadium and you're wearing Michigan apparel.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Everybody's wearing it. You have one thing in common. You're
- 26:20Speaker 2: excited about that. You have a connection there. It's a
- 26:23Speaker 2: wonderful thing when it is a sporting event that happens
- 26:27Speaker 2: at your time. You extrapolate that and then you weaponize
- 26:30Speaker 2: it for overall power. It gets a little dicey, but
- 26:32Speaker 2: there's something very human about it all.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Well, if that weaponized power gets the Knicks a championship,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I have this thing. I'm a very superstitious fan. Since
- 26:44Speaker 1: the Strait of Hormuz has been blocked, the Knicks have
- 26:47Speaker 1: been winning. And I need everything to stay exactly the
- 26:51Speaker 1: same until the Knicks win the championship.
- 26:55Speaker 3: So you're rooting for an elongated.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm rooting for the Knicks to win the championship. That
- 27:01Speaker 1: is what I'm rooting for. That is the goal right now.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I don't know if I would get super superstitious about
- 27:09Speaker 2: extended global conflicts.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Everything needs to stay the same, Jordan. We are finally
- 27:13Speaker 1: winning for the first time. Maybe cut that part.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I'll root for high gas prices as well. I think
- 27:21Speaker 2: it's all worth it. If we all go through a
- 27:23Speaker 2: little bit of financial... Duress for the short term. In
- 27:26Speaker 2: the long term, it means that the Knicks get to
- 27:28Speaker 2: be champions. I think we could all agree that it's
- 27:30Speaker 2: a worthwhile endeavor.
- 27:31Speaker 1: As someone who was covering the January 6th rally, you'll
- 27:37Speaker 1: see where I'm getting.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Let's see you get there.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Knicks fans infiltrated the Philadelphia 76ers arena. What do you
- 27:45Speaker 1: think about it? That infiltration of the arena taking over.
- 27:51Speaker 2: You went from eight to nine on that one.
- 27:56Speaker 1: You got to see them.
- 27:57Speaker 2: You know what? As an insurrection witness, check my FBI file.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I know what it's like to dive into a foreign
- 28:08Speaker 2: space and take it over.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Hearing about that in Philly is wild. For those who
- 28:15Speaker 3: don't know.
- 28:16Speaker 2: the Knicks played in Philadelphia and it became like a
- 28:18Speaker 2: home game in Philadelphia.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was like 75% Knicks fans for
- 28:22Speaker 1: game four.
- 28:23Speaker 2: That's wild. That gives me some New York pride. If
- 28:25Speaker 2: I was a Philly fan, I would be totally pissed off.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I remember, but I do love that stuff about it. Again,
- 28:30Speaker 2: in the sports arena, I think that's also where you
- 28:32Speaker 2: get out some of that, you put it in the
- 28:34Speaker 2: political world and it gets cruel and mean and can hurt.
- 28:37Speaker 2: You can get it out in the sports. You can
- 28:38Speaker 2: get out that angst and that energy and that tribalism
- 28:40Speaker 2: and hopefully you can let it just live there. There
- 28:43Speaker 2: was also a story how New York wasn't selling Philly
- 28:46Speaker 2: cheesesteaks in certain places because it being Philly. And again,
- 28:49Speaker 2: as a Michigan fan, whenever the Michigan-Ohio State thing happens,
- 28:53Speaker 2: I know OSU, they will cover M's on campus.
- 28:57Speaker 3: I know there was a story, too. This is props
- 28:59Speaker 3: to Ohio State. I give it to you. It always
- 29:01Speaker 3: made me laugh. They wouldn't.
- 29:04Speaker 2: There's a story of, like, the Ohio State bus unwilling
- 29:06Speaker 2: to pay for gas in Michigan because they don't want
- 29:10Speaker 2: to spend any money there. It's just that kind of shit.
- 29:13Speaker 2: I love it. I love that local pride.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Well, politics has, like, real-life consequences where, like, as someone
- 29:20Speaker 1: who spends way too much time watching basketball, basketball is
- 29:24Speaker 1: ball and hoop. And then game over.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Well, the only real-life consequences are the time you spend
- 29:29Speaker 2: there as opposed to with your family, which has real-world consequences,
- 29:33Speaker 2: and you should spend more time with your family.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Well, the Knicks can be family.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. you've expanded your family.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I would say the other issue is maybe the online gambling,
- 29:44Speaker 1: but as long as you're winning, as long as you're winning,
- 29:47Speaker 1: it's not a problem. It doesn't matter.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, people don't talk enough about that with online gambling.
- 29:53Speaker 1: If your team's winning, you're good.
- 29:55Speaker 2: You're good.
- 29:55Speaker 3: Yeah, the problem's not me. It's with the efficacy of
- 29:58Speaker 3: my team.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Yeah. They should cover my losses.
- 30:01Speaker 3: You got to figure it out.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Let's go to, it's time for something we call Daily
- 30:09Speaker 1: Show and Tell. So, Jordan, what's something that you've watched, read,
- 30:13Speaker 1: listened to, argued about, or just been on your mind lately?
- 30:16Speaker 2: I'm going to give two things. Two things that happened recently.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Because we slagged off Philadelphia. Yeah. I went to Philadelphia recently.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I enjoy that city. And I went to the big
- 30:28Speaker 2: museum they have there. And they have an art exhibit
- 30:30Speaker 2: on the Rocky Monument that famously was created for the movie,
- 30:37Speaker 2: then lived outside the art museum, and became one of
- 30:41Speaker 2: the most visited monuments in all of the country. And
- 30:46Speaker 2: had a sort of tumultuous relationship even with the museum.
- 30:49Speaker 2: The museum itself was like, is this art or is
- 30:51Speaker 2: this just a movie prop? They moved it around. And
- 30:54Speaker 2: then they finally just moved it inside and they've curated
- 30:57Speaker 2: this curated exhibit by a guy named Paul Farber who
- 31:01Speaker 2: works for Monuments Lab, which is a really cool group
- 31:05Speaker 2: that focuses on monuments, the history of them, also facilitates
- 31:09Speaker 2: a lot of monuments. And it asks a lot of
- 31:11Speaker 2: interesting questions about like, what is a monument? What does
- 31:14Speaker 2: it represent? What are we choosing to hold on pedestals?
- 31:20Speaker 2: What does it say about who we are? And this
- 31:22Speaker 2: one in Philadelphia is really kind of fun. It looks
- 31:25Speaker 2: very much at boxing, but also the history of putting
- 31:27Speaker 2: people on these pedestals and what it means when you
- 31:29Speaker 2: take something that is a movie story and not a
- 31:32Speaker 2: real person and you put it inside a museum and
- 31:34Speaker 2: it becomes art and something that people reflect and see
- 31:36Speaker 2: themselves in, especially at a time when we are talking
- 31:40Speaker 2: a lot about building arches in Washington, D.C. and Donald
- 31:44Speaker 2: Trump is releasing big gold statues of himself at Mar-a-Lago.
- 31:48Speaker 2: There's going to be monuments built in Washington, D.C. to
- 31:50Speaker 2: who our heroes are. I think As a kid, I
- 31:54Speaker 2: grew up thinking monuments were just built to people that
- 31:57Speaker 2: everybody agreed was the person that we respect. But they
- 32:01Speaker 2: are all political acts, and they are reflections of our
- 32:04Speaker 2: society or what people want our society to be or
- 32:08Speaker 2: pushing on our society. And so this was just a
- 32:10Speaker 2: great exhibit that allows you to ask some of those questions.
- 32:15Speaker 2: I don't want to say it's an apolitical exhibit, but
- 32:18Speaker 2: it allows you to ask it through the framework of
- 32:21Speaker 2: politics boxing in the city of Philadelphia and not just
- 32:24Speaker 2: the politics of Confederate statues. So it gets at it
- 32:27Speaker 2: in a very open, surprising way. So I highly recommend
- 32:31Speaker 2: going down to Philadelphia and checking that out.
- 32:33Speaker 1: So we need more movie-based statues is what you're arguing?
- 32:39Speaker 2: I think yes. I think you will walk through that
- 32:42Speaker 2: at the end and be like, you know what? It
- 32:44Speaker 2: is time to build statues.
- 32:45Speaker 1: What characters do you think need statues?
- 32:48Speaker 2: Give me a Buzz Lightyear. Everybody's going to love a
- 32:50Speaker 2: Buzz Lightyear. What else are we going to love? I
- 32:52Speaker 2: would love all the characters from Bottle Rocket, my favorite movie.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Just a cast, gold cast photo.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Yeah, just give me Owen and Luke Wilson. It's like,
- 33:02Speaker 2: what is this? Oh, that's Owen and Luke Wilson from
- 33:05Speaker 2: the movie Bottle Rocket. Not Tenenbaums, not Tenenbaums, Bottle Rocket
- 33:08Speaker 2: was one of their earlier films. That's just what I want.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I want them to reflect the stories that are important
- 33:14Speaker 2: to me. What would you do? What film character?
- 33:17Speaker 1: Oh, man. Too many Adam Sandler movies to pick through
- 33:20Speaker 1: for just one statue. Oh, man. Yeah, maybe Billy Madison
- 33:24Speaker 1: just in the middle of New York City.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I mean, that would be pretty iconic.
- 33:29Speaker 1: No one would try to tear that thing down.
- 33:32Speaker 3: You know what?
- 33:34Speaker 2: I had a framed poster in college of Jeff Daniels
- 33:38Speaker 2: from Dumb and Dumber on the toilet.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Screaming, if you remember that image.
- 33:42Speaker 1: That's a good statue.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I was like, that would be a great statue. I
- 33:46Speaker 2: don't know where you put that. I don't know what
- 33:48Speaker 2: it says to us about who we are as humans, but.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Fucking why not?
- 33:53Speaker 1: Yeah, if everyone's getting a statue, I might as well
- 33:57Speaker 1: put these up. And what was the other thing?
- 33:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the other one too. I just started Lord
- 34:00Speaker 2: of the Flies.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Oh, nice.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And I'm very early on in it, but I forget
- 34:05Speaker 2: how I read that book in high school and enjoyed
- 34:09Speaker 2: it then. But it seems this remake was immediately compelling
- 34:13Speaker 2: and fascinating. And watching kids create society is.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Great and fascinating.
- 34:20Speaker 2: So based on the first 30 minutes of it, I
- 34:23Speaker 2: think they might have a hit over there. Good for
- 34:25Speaker 2: that upstart Netflix, too.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I was rooting for them. I wasn't sure they were
- 34:30Speaker 1: going to make it a while back.
- 34:31Speaker 3: They might figure it out.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yeah, they might figure it out. What do you got?
- 34:34Speaker 3: You got a show and tell?
- 34:35Speaker 1: I got to show and tell. I'm going to keep
- 34:36Speaker 1: it consistent, and I'm going to say that everybody listening
- 34:40Speaker 1: should take some time from their day and watch Jalen
- 34:42Speaker 1: Brunson play with a basketball for the New York Knicks
- 34:46Speaker 1: because it's awesome to watch.
- 34:48Speaker 3: It's a beautiful thing.
- 34:49Speaker 1: It's really fun to be a Knicks fan right now.
- 34:51Speaker 1: It seems like you're relatively new, but I've had a
- 34:54Speaker 1: lot of pain, and it's awesome, and it's fun, and
- 34:58Speaker 1: you should do it. And if you don't know what
- 35:00Speaker 1: sports are and you're listening... I'm really sorry that you
- 35:03Speaker 1: had to listen to that suggestion.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Can I, you know, we're turning into a sports podcast,
- 35:08Speaker 2: but there was a moment that made me, I was
- 35:12Speaker 2: surprised by how emotional I got. Last week, I was watching,
- 35:15Speaker 2: they've been all great series. I've been a big fan
- 35:17Speaker 2: of the NBA. But whether you like the NBA or
- 35:20Speaker 2: whatever sport, there's beautiful narratives that are happening. And I
- 35:24Speaker 2: think basketball at its best feels poetic and beautiful. And
- 35:27Speaker 2: I was watching LeBron play in this last series. You
- 35:31Speaker 2: know who LeBron James is, but it's been a season
- 35:33Speaker 2: that's been up and down, and it was going up
- 35:35Speaker 2: and then lost all of their players due to injury,
- 35:38Speaker 2: or most of them. And Luke is out, and Austin
- 35:41Speaker 2: Reeves was out. And LeBron won some big games they
- 35:44Speaker 2: weren't supposed to win. And in one of these games,
- 35:47Speaker 2: he had an alley-oop to his son, Bronny James. And
- 35:50Speaker 2: there's been a lot of conversation about Bronny being on
- 35:53Speaker 2: the team, and they played, and they haven't played a lot,
- 35:55Speaker 2: but because there were so many injured players, Bronny got
- 35:57Speaker 2: to play in this game. And there was a moment
- 35:59Speaker 2: where he threw an alley-oop, and After the game, they won,
- 36:03Speaker 2: and they were talking to LeBron about the game, and
- 36:06Speaker 2: they asked LeBron what it was like to throw. It
- 36:08Speaker 2: was the first time a father had thrown an alley-oop
- 36:11Speaker 2: to their son in a playoff game. And LeBron James,
- 36:15Speaker 2: he flippantly said this, but when asked about it, he said, oh,
- 36:21Speaker 2: I noticed he made a little shuffle step with his feet,
- 36:24Speaker 2: and I've been watching him make that move since he
- 36:27Speaker 2: was a baby, and so I knew.
- 36:30Speaker 3: to toss it up to him, and he got it.
- 36:31Speaker 2: And I immediately broke down and started crying. As a dad,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I was like, that is one of the most beautiful
- 36:41Speaker 2: expressions of parental love and attention. You watch your child grow.
- 36:46Speaker 2: You watch every little face they make and the ways
- 36:49Speaker 2: in which they move around the rooms. You are attuned
- 36:52Speaker 2: to catch them.
- 36:52Speaker 3: When they fall.
- 36:53Speaker 2: That is what a loving parent does, is you become
- 36:56Speaker 2: attuned to the way in which your child moves through
- 37:00Speaker 2: space and time. And in this weird world, this, one
- 37:04Speaker 2: of the greatest basketball players of all time is suddenly
- 37:06Speaker 2: playing with their child on the biggest stage on the planet.
- 37:12Speaker 2: And in a little moment, out of the corner of
- 37:13Speaker 2: their eyes, saw their child do some tiny move that
- 37:17Speaker 2: they recognize because they've been watching their own life. And instinctively,
- 37:21Speaker 2: the poetry of basketball takes place that he tosses it
- 37:23Speaker 2: up in the air. And he's been practicing basketball his
- 37:27Speaker 2: entire life. And therefore, He executes it on the highest
- 37:30Speaker 2: level possible because that's something he's cared so much about.
- 37:33Speaker 2: But his instinct came from fatherhood and watching his child
- 37:37Speaker 2: and his child is able to catch it, know what
- 37:39Speaker 2: to do with it and make it.
- 37:40Speaker 3: To me, it was like, that's, it's beautiful.
- 37:42Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 37:43Speaker 3: And I wept and I was so happy I was alone.
- 37:47Speaker 2: What are you doing? In fact, I told her a
- 37:50Speaker 2: version of this and she, I don't think she was like, okay.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I'm like, but, It hit me. I was like, that's
- 37:56Speaker 2: a beautiful thing. And I forget that sports can do that.
- 37:59Speaker 1: When they showed the parents when USA won gold medal
- 38:02Speaker 1: at the Winter Olympics, I was hysterically crying. And my
- 38:06Speaker 1: wife was like, why are you so emotional? I'm like,
- 38:08Speaker 1: what if one day that's our children and I'm that parent?
- 38:11Speaker 1: Because I've given up on that it'll be me playing
- 38:13Speaker 1: on the ice. But there's still a chance for him
- 38:16Speaker 1: to be there. And she's like, okay. Let's move on
- 38:19Speaker 1: with our day.
- 38:20Speaker 3: You see things differently.
- 38:21Speaker 2: I think on this Mother's Day week, it's important to
- 38:24Speaker 2: You know, a big shout out to the fathers. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Who really, I think, get left behind on the Mother's
- 38:28Speaker 2: Day weekend.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Yeah, they should get a little more credit on Mother's Day.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 38:32Speaker 1: But also on Father's Day, they should get all the credit.
- 38:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this is, actually, this is a good start.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Father's Day is coming up, so this is sort of
- 38:37Speaker 2: like a few-week run-up to Father's Day.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Yeah, the run-up. It should be, it's a few weeks
- 38:42Speaker 1: of celebration.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 38:44Speaker 3: May it begin in earnest today.
