Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Let's start tier.
- 0:06Speaker 2: We are expecting Shane Bieber to join us at any moment.
- 0:10Speaker 2: The Blue Jays game three three.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Yes, he started it three and seven in the LCS
- 0:15Speaker 3: are not going to change it.
- 0:16Speaker 2: I would think so too, but they haven't officially announced
- 0:19Speaker 2: that yet. Maybe he'll give us the official announcement when
- 0:21Speaker 2: we talked to him. Before we get to him, I
- 0:23Speaker 2: did have this saved. You asked me yesterday about ratings.
- 0:28Speaker 2: We got them for Fox. ALCS Game seven averaged over
- 0:32Speaker 2: nine million viewers.
- 0:35Speaker 3: And that's just in the US though.
- 0:36Speaker 2: In the US that's part of this, and peaked at
- 0:39Speaker 2: twelve point three ish. It was the most watched ALCS
- 0:42Speaker 2: game on any network since twenty seventeen, which was ALCS
- 0:48Speaker 2: Game seven. Yankees astras, Yep, we hear about that one
- 0:53Speaker 2: all the time.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Tod with Todd Father Kratz. Tod Father brings that one
- 0:57Speaker 1: up all the time.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Yes, yes, still thinks they were banging trash cans in
- 1:01Speaker 5: the game, but we had nineteen mound visits to change
- 1:04Speaker 5: our signs every single time, so I don't Yankee fans.
- 1:08Speaker 5: They weren't banging trash cans during that game. It's not
- 1:10Speaker 5: like every every pitch occurrence type of thing.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That one was in New York or in Houston.
- 1:16Speaker 5: That game seven in Houston, we had a three to
- 1:18Speaker 5: two lead going to Houston, lost Game six and then
- 1:22Speaker 5: lost Game seven.
- 1:23Speaker 3: That's when Lance mccullors threw.
- 1:26Speaker 1: A couple of curve balls in a row exactly.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Game six was a blowout, right.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I remember.
- 1:35Speaker 3: In Game seven was the super tight one that they
- 1:37Speaker 3: you guys lost at the end as we got other
- 1:42Speaker 3: things to worry about. We don't care. That's past. We're
- 1:44Speaker 3: talking about it with.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Actually, pitch is ready to go. Let's bring him in.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Blue Jay Starter Shane Bieber is here, looking nice and
- 1:51Speaker 2: crisp from his phone. Does he have to move it
- 1:53Speaker 2: horizontal to everybody? I'm asking real quick so that we
- 1:56Speaker 2: know once we can start here, let me know fast.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I think I did all right?
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yep? Did it looks great? How you doing?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Man?
- 2:02Speaker 1: All right?
- 2:02Speaker 4: Thanks? Yeah, sorry, you're gonna have to bear with me here.
- 2:04Speaker 4: I'm doing. I'm doing well, guys. Thanks for having me on.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 2:07Speaker 6: By the way, is it beanie weather in Toronto? You
- 2:09Speaker 6: have a full Beanie? It's not that cold.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Yeah, we're it's climate control.
- 2:13Speaker 7: We're we're indoors here, but you didn't want to see
- 2:16Speaker 7: this mop that's under here, so I had to throw
- 2:19Speaker 7: something on. And we're going straight to some some media
- 2:23Speaker 7: duties after this.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So wrap the brand. How is the celebration after game seven?
- 2:28Speaker 2: It looked like a nightclub?
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it was. It was long.
- 2:35Speaker 7: It was well deserved. You know those eight pm game starts, Uh,
- 2:42Speaker 7: go go deep into the night, right, But it's a
- 2:45Speaker 7: it's a great privilege to be able to celebrate late
- 2:48Speaker 7: and to enjoy what was a huge win with with
- 2:52Speaker 7: these guys.
- 2:55Speaker 6: By the way, Shane, I mean, I know, it's just
- 2:57Speaker 6: like where Scott would hang out normally on a Tuesday night,
- 2:59Speaker 6: like you guys were doing that Monday night. But was
- 3:01Speaker 6: mad Max like the all time greatest because they showed
- 3:05Speaker 6: him at one point he was standing I don't know
- 3:06Speaker 6: what he was throwing beer on everybody like on the stage?
- 3:09Speaker 3: Was he the DJ? Was he having the most fun?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Who had the most and what? By the way, I
- 3:14Speaker 3: know you guys are all.
- 3:15Speaker 6: Sexy as hell with your shirts off, but why is
- 3:17Speaker 6: everyone wearing no shirt? Can we get Gossman and Hoffman
- 3:20Speaker 6: and some of these guys to put shirts on.
- 3:23Speaker 7: I know I've been trying. I've been trying this whole run,
- 3:25Speaker 7: but it keeps working. So who am I to tell
- 3:27Speaker 7: him what to do? In regards to Max, I don't
- 3:31Speaker 7: even think he knows what he's doing. He's just enjoying it, man,
- 3:35Speaker 7: And like he sets the standard. He works his tail
- 3:39Speaker 7: off right, he goes and competes like nobody, nobody else,
- 3:42Speaker 7: and then he enjoys it like nobody else too, And
- 3:45Speaker 7: that's what we're all trying to do and fall in line.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And man, what a pleasure it's been to be able
- 3:51Speaker 4: to play with him.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Did that celebration?
- 3:54Speaker 3: Has that been?
- 3:55Speaker 5: Like, that's not been like since day one, since you've
- 3:57Speaker 5: been there, it's kind of like grown right, like mores
- 4:00Speaker 5: more fog machines Or is that like your first day
- 4:03Speaker 5: when you got there in your first big league rehab
- 4:06Speaker 5: assignment that that you went on.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Is that what they were?
- 4:08Speaker 5: Rocks?
- 4:09Speaker 7: So yeah, so yeah, they redid the clubhouse like a
- 4:12Speaker 7: year and a half, two years ago, I think, And like, yeah,
- 4:15Speaker 7: I got here a couple of months ago and this
- 4:18Speaker 7: place is purled out. It's it's pretty incredible the way
- 4:21Speaker 7: they take care of you know, all just every amenity
- 4:25Speaker 7: is anything you can think of is handled. And I
- 4:29Speaker 7: think it was going into Game one sixty two, obviously
- 4:32Speaker 7: we're fighting for the Al East, and they were setting
- 4:35Speaker 7: something up in the hallways outside the clubhouse. They were
- 4:38Speaker 7: setting up like strobe lights and all that. I said, what,
- 4:40Speaker 7: what what's this all about. They're like, oh, that's for
- 4:43Speaker 7: you know, when we win the postgame celebration. I said,
- 4:45Speaker 7: we're not gonna We're not going to celebrate in this
- 4:49Speaker 7: fantastic clubhouse of ours. I would love to. I would
- 4:53Speaker 7: love to mess things up in here. And they said, no, no,
- 4:55Speaker 7: it's too nice. We'll do the hallway. I said, okay, well,
- 4:58Speaker 7: when we win the World Series, you got to promise
- 5:01Speaker 7: we can. We can do it in this clubhouse and
- 5:04Speaker 7: and really mess some mess some stuff up.
- 5:06Speaker 4: So we'll see if they keep their promises.
- 5:10Speaker 6: That's a big hallway. By the way, that was a
- 5:12Speaker 6: big hallway. It looks like a rave hole. I mean
- 5:13Speaker 6: that's a massive hallway, which is.
- 5:15Speaker 3: All yeah, which is aw all right.
- 5:17Speaker 4: They do it right here, that's for sure.
- 5:19Speaker 6: They've changed the clubhouse because they used it used to
- 5:21Speaker 6: not be nice, so they've redone the whole. They've done
- 5:23Speaker 6: both sides, and it's way better than what it used
- 5:26Speaker 6: to be, as you know. All right, so we got
- 5:27Speaker 6: to go back to Game seven. You started Game seven.
- 5:29Speaker 6: First of all, in the first inning, your ex teammate
- 5:33Speaker 6: Josh Naylor jumps in front of a double playball. What
- 5:36Speaker 6: did you say to him when he did because you
- 5:39Speaker 6: said something to him, but you didn't really read your looks.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no you couldn't. I thought it was pretty obvious.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah, something like what the effort you doing? Or it
- 5:49Speaker 3: was kind of.
- 5:50Speaker 7: Like that, you know, that's the heat of the moment comment, right, like,
- 5:54Speaker 7: you know, he already had a base base RBI base
- 5:57Speaker 7: hit and it was a tailor made double play to
- 6:00Speaker 7: get out of that first inning. And credit to Josh Man,
- 6:03Speaker 7: I know he'll do anything he can to win.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Love his game. He had a fantastic year this year.
- 6:10Speaker 7: So we exchanged some text messages after and it's all good.
- 6:13Speaker 4: But yeah, I think you can you can.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Read, uh read my lips, and you know, thankfully they
- 6:19Speaker 7: they made the right call and we got out.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Of the inning.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Okay, So not only did you yell at Nailor, but
- 6:23Speaker 6: when you got taken out of the game, you kind
- 6:26Speaker 6: of were yelling at the umpire, were you trying to
- 6:28Speaker 6: get ejected as you got taken out of the game,
- 6:30Speaker 6: or were you just walking that fine line between just
- 6:33Speaker 6: saying things and not getting ejected.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you know something about that, don't you.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I've been ejected a time or ten, so yes, I.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Know it worked, Yes, so exactly.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Yeah, it turns out, I mean, the TV zones different
- 6:47Speaker 7: than the umpires on, so we'll see.
- 6:49Speaker 5: But I went back and.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Looked and like home, those are both falls. So that's
- 6:52Speaker 4: not a great not a great look.
- 6:53Speaker 7: But you know whatever, I think, like I said, is
- 6:58Speaker 7: game seven just trying to leave it all out there.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And obviously didn't want to you know, I wanted to
- 7:02Speaker 4: finish the inning and didn't want to end it on
- 7:04Speaker 4: a on a walk.
- 7:05Speaker 7: But at the same time I knew, you know, Louis Varlin,
- 7:08Speaker 7: our fire extinguisher, was coming into the ball game, and
- 7:11Speaker 7: you know he was able to get the job done
- 7:13Speaker 7: and and ultimately, in a game seven, you're just looking
- 7:16Speaker 7: to give everything you have out there and then pass
- 7:18Speaker 7: the time and with the offense that we have, keep
- 7:21Speaker 7: it as close as possible, and you know we're gonna
- 7:23Speaker 7: get our opportunities to do some damage and go figure
- 7:27Speaker 7: we did just that, all.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Right, So players in the dugout kind of know how
- 7:32Speaker 5: the game is gonna go. You're surprised by certain moments.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Take us to the springer. The springer and not bringing
- 7:39Speaker 5: munos in in that in that situation, were you guys
- 7:41Speaker 5: sitting on the bench like I kind of thought they'd
- 7:45Speaker 5: bring munos in here, like we kind of did you say.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Kind of rash or brash or brash? Yeah, honestly, I
- 7:54Speaker 7: mean you never know. Hitting is hard, right and baseball
- 7:59Speaker 7: is crazy. We have all these in the world, and
- 8:01Speaker 7: in George, he continually comes up with a huge hit.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Time after time.
- 8:05Speaker 7: We were all hoping for a base hit, and uh
- 8:07Speaker 7: he won uped us, that's for sure. You know, credit
- 8:11Speaker 7: to honestly the Mariners, their bullpen. They they're incredible all year,
- 8:15Speaker 7: in all postseason. And so, you know, regardless, I think
- 8:20Speaker 7: you're you're thinking a little bit less about the picture
- 8:24Speaker 7: and you're you're thinking a little bit more about George
- 8:26Speaker 7: and putting your faith in him and his ability to
- 8:28Speaker 7: get the job done regardless of who's on the mound.
- 8:32Speaker 7: But yeah, I think looking back, they probably had a
- 8:34Speaker 7: few different options, but nobody knows those conversations when that
- 8:38Speaker 7: dugout and in that bullpen to end up making that decision.
- 8:41Speaker 7: But I think for us Andres had a huge sacrifice
- 8:46Speaker 7: bunt to put runners on second and third and and
- 8:49Speaker 7: it didn't matter who's on the mound. We have every
- 8:53Speaker 7: all the confidence in the world in George to be
- 8:55Speaker 7: able to come through for us big time.
- 8:57Speaker 6: You know you're happy they brought in you can you
- 9:00Speaker 6: guys are all happy on that bench and you guys like, oh,
- 9:02Speaker 6: George Homer, nice, thanks guys, thank you, thank you.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Seattle. So it's okay. I know how listen, you're not
- 9:07Speaker 3: gonna say it, I'll say it for you. It's cool.
- 9:09Speaker 3: But I want to know are you pitching Game three?
- 9:10Speaker 3: Have they told you? Are you guys going same same rotation?
- 9:13Speaker 4: I think we're still I think we're still figuring some
- 9:15Speaker 4: things out.
- 9:16Speaker 7: I heard you guys talking when I was in the
- 9:17Speaker 7: waiting room there trying to get an answer from me.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I actually don't have an answer just yet.
- 9:22Speaker 3: But I think you're saving it for media. It's cool,
- 9:26Speaker 3: we get it.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Yeah, No, you guys are the media man.
- 9:30Speaker 7: In twelve minutes, I might find out when everybody else
- 9:32Speaker 7: finds out to be fair, But I just it's a
- 9:36Speaker 7: World Series.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Like I said, no matter.
- 9:37Speaker 7: What, we're leaving it all out there, So I don't
- 9:41Speaker 7: care when it is. I'm just excited and grateful to
- 9:43Speaker 7: be able to get an opportunity and get the ball.
- 9:45Speaker 4: And so whenever I do get that, I'll get my
- 9:48Speaker 4: all shame.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So they kept they always talk about this. You had
- 9:52Speaker 3: Tommy John not that long ago. Okay, is it a thing?
- 9:55Speaker 6: Is this a real thing where you throw one day
- 9:57Speaker 6: and you're like, Okay, my arm feels great and I
- 9:59Speaker 6: have great stuff, and then the next time, because it's
- 10:01Speaker 6: kind of been in the postseason, one good one, one
- 10:03Speaker 6: bad one, one really good one, one bad one. You know,
- 10:05Speaker 6: is that a real thing where sometimes you just don't
- 10:07Speaker 6: feel it because you haven't fully come back from Tommy John?
- 10:10Speaker 6: Because the Game three start, your slider was literally stopping
- 10:14Speaker 6: and just making a left turn on TV, right right
- 10:17Speaker 6: turn or left turn for you, right tern for the
- 10:19Speaker 6: hitter right, and then in Game seven it just wasn't
- 10:23Speaker 6: as sharp.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Is that a Tommy John thing? Or is that just
- 10:26Speaker 3: day to day thing?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Who's to say? I think I located it much much
- 10:32Speaker 4: better in Seattle.
- 10:33Speaker 7: You know, I left some pitches up in Game seven,
- 10:38Speaker 7: and I got punched for it a little bit, and
- 10:40Speaker 7: at the same time, I felt like, uh, yeah, it
- 10:44Speaker 7: just had It was one of those addings. It was
- 10:46Speaker 7: clear early on, and you know, from behind the dish,
- 10:48Speaker 7: like sometimes it's like, oh, we're gonna have to grind
- 10:50Speaker 7: through this one because you know, induced a few ground
- 10:53Speaker 7: balls and they were final and we're just trying to
- 10:56Speaker 7: limit damage at that point.
- 10:58Speaker 4: The game kind of.
- 11:01Speaker 7: Like sets its theme early on and you got to
- 11:05Speaker 7: make adjustments and compete and roll.
- 11:06Speaker 4: With it, and that's kind of what it was. And so.
- 11:10Speaker 7: I think in a game seven, you're just focusing on
- 11:13Speaker 7: getting as many outs as you can and keeping the
- 11:15Speaker 7: game close.
- 11:16Speaker 4: And fortunately I was able to do that.
- 11:19Speaker 7: And you know, in regards to Tommy John, I don't
- 11:22Speaker 7: know what's going on right now, Like there's yeah, everybody
- 11:25Speaker 7: I've spoken to is telling me and had told me, like,
- 11:30Speaker 7: get you know, once you get to that first off season,
- 11:32Speaker 7: because I didn't have an off season last year. I
- 11:34Speaker 7: was rehabbing and throwing and building up throughout the entire
- 11:38Speaker 7: thing and in spring training.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I wasn't pitching in games the first half of
- 11:42Speaker 4: this year.
- 11:42Speaker 7: But you know, I'm throwing bullpens, you know, two three
- 11:46Speaker 7: a week and then lives and you know, starting on
- 11:49Speaker 7: a five day rotation. So it's been a it's been
- 11:52Speaker 7: a grind, that's for sure. It's been a long year
- 11:54Speaker 7: and a half two years. But guys say, like, well,
- 11:57Speaker 7: you get that full off season and then you build
- 11:59Speaker 7: up and do normal spring training, that's when things kind
- 12:01Speaker 7: of start.
- 12:02Speaker 4: To feel normal.
- 12:02Speaker 7: But for me, I don't even think I would recognize
- 12:07Speaker 7: what normal is right now, just because of where I'm at,
- 12:12Speaker 7: coming off of surgery, you know, having just started throwing
- 12:16Speaker 7: a baseball just a year ago, and now I find
- 12:20Speaker 7: myself pitching the World Series.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Is there a difference for you going into a start
- 12:24Speaker 5: because you said in Seattle? In Seattle, your slider was good.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Do you feel like your stuff is different in Toronto,
- 12:32Speaker 5: in Seattle, in Toronto, in la or in Toronto roof close,
- 12:37Speaker 5: roof open, like where you can you can spin it differently?
- 12:41Speaker 7: Yeah, it can be absolutely And that's something I've kind
- 12:45Speaker 7: of learned a lot more about this year, just playing
- 12:47Speaker 7: in an environment like this with a dome, making some
- 12:50Speaker 7: starts with the roof open and with the roof close
- 12:54Speaker 7: and different different wind patterns.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And after my first start, I think it was the
- 12:58Speaker 4: roof was open and I.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Was throwing change ups that I could not land in
- 13:04Speaker 7: the strike zone, and I was looking up at the
- 13:08Speaker 7: the metrics of it and it was like negative four
- 13:12Speaker 7: vertical and negative twenty two horizontal and as twice as
- 13:17Speaker 7: much movement as I was used to right and was
- 13:20Speaker 7: trying to make the adjustment mid mid game and on
- 13:23Speaker 7: the mound. So yeah, absolutely, environment definitely impacts the way
- 13:27Speaker 7: the ball moves and the way.
- 13:29Speaker 4: You might go about pitching. But at the same time,
- 13:31Speaker 4: you try and just.
- 13:34Speaker 7: Figure it out early on and make the adjustments necessary,
- 13:36Speaker 7: and then it doesn't really matter. Nobody cares what the
- 13:39Speaker 7: environments like. You got to go out there and compete.
- 13:42Speaker 6: Interesting that you look at that, by the way, and
- 13:44Speaker 6: then you try to make adjustments.
- 13:45Speaker 3: My hell, pitching has changed.
- 13:46Speaker 6: I mean it's crazy how pitching is, you know, I
- 13:48Speaker 6: look at vertical and horizontal. It kind of like, man,
- 13:50Speaker 6: I really.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Threw a good slider and punch that dude out on them.
- 13:53Speaker 6: So that's what you should tell next time it comes
- 13:55Speaker 6: to take you out. You should go like Max and
- 13:57Speaker 6: be like, look at the vertical on my slide. It's
- 14:00Speaker 6: good right now.
- 14:02Speaker 7: No, and we make fun of ourselves for sure. For that,
- 14:05Speaker 7: Like there's there's definitely a nice balance. You don't want
- 14:08Speaker 7: to just like completely rely on that stuff, but sometimes
- 14:11Speaker 7: it's nice to add context. So why why for you know,
- 14:15Speaker 7: the love of guy, you can't land a change up
- 14:17Speaker 7: and you've been able to do it for the last
- 14:20Speaker 7: last six months.
- 14:22Speaker 4: But at the same time, like.
- 14:23Speaker 7: Now I'm hearing hitters do that too, and they're coming
- 14:26Speaker 7: back and looking at the iPads and so it's not
- 14:29Speaker 7: just hitters they're they're or it's not just pictures. It's
- 14:32Speaker 7: it's hitters two that are focused on all that stuff
- 14:34Speaker 7: and for better or for worse, it helps.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Them, but it might hurt them as well. So we'll see, all.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Right, last three, But because we know you got to
- 14:42Speaker 6: go last three real quick? One, what's it like to
- 14:46Speaker 6: be because the logo behind you says World Series. You
- 14:48Speaker 6: were on the Guardians, you were hurt, you got traded
- 14:50Speaker 6: to the Blue Jays, now you're in the World Series.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Explain that feeling to.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Us, Yeah, hard to explain.
- 14:58Speaker 7: We didn't know what what was int or for for
- 15:00Speaker 7: my family and I getting traded over here.
- 15:04Speaker 4: You know what was that end of July. And you know,
- 15:08Speaker 4: thankfully I knew a lot.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Of guys here, A lot of guys from Cleveland have
- 15:11Speaker 7: ended up here in Toronto, and these guys have welcomed
- 15:16Speaker 7: me with open arms, and the team and even guys
- 15:19Speaker 7: I didn't know prior to to get traded over here
- 15:21Speaker 7: that they've taken amazing care and and helped this My
- 15:25Speaker 7: family and I acclimate so so well.
- 15:27Speaker 4: And so.
- 15:29Speaker 7: Really it's a it's a surreal feeling now pitching in
- 15:34Speaker 7: the World Series and being in the World Series, and
- 15:37Speaker 7: this is the most fun I've ever had playing baseball.
- 15:39Speaker 7: I'm enjoying every second with these guys, and so I
- 15:43Speaker 7: can't wait to continue it. But it's a it's a
- 15:46Speaker 7: crazy feeling, that's for sure.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Okay, Second one is is bo gonna play? Is he
- 15:50Speaker 6: gonna be out there playing short stuff for you guys
- 15:52Speaker 6: in tomorrow.
- 15:54Speaker 7: I know he's working his tail off to to get
- 15:56Speaker 7: to a point, to push them hard, to to make
- 15:59Speaker 7: the right decision. I think he's probably already rehabbing or
- 16:06Speaker 7: hitting right now. I saw him a little bit earlier,
- 16:08Speaker 7: and so I don't know when they got to release
- 16:11Speaker 7: the roster, probably tonight, tomorrow morning. So I know they
- 16:14Speaker 7: they definitely have some decisions to make, but you ain't
- 16:17Speaker 7: getting that answer for me. And you think, if you
- 16:21Speaker 7: if you think, I know, you're crazy.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Man.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Dang, you're so good at this stuff. You're so good
- 16:26Speaker 6: at not answering questions but not really answer. That's why
- 16:29Speaker 6: I wore this shirt. I wore this shirt just for you, Okay,
- 16:32Speaker 6: just because I know, just because I know.
- 16:35Speaker 4: I'm not worried about the Hotspurs.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Okay, all right, all right, he's not a Hotspur fan.
- 16:41Speaker 3: What do you want me to your last question?
- 16:42Speaker 6: That was my last question. I wore that shirt just
- 16:44Speaker 6: for him. I wanted to see his feelings on you.
- 16:46Speaker 6: He just laughed.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I love it. I appreciate it.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You're what you're Chelsea, right, Chelsea.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Fan, Liverpool, Liverpool shot.
- 16:54Speaker 7: They're playing more, they're playing more American football games in
- 16:57Speaker 7: that stadium than they are European football.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Hey, well, you know you gotta get that money. Gotta
- 17:02Speaker 3: make that money. Concerts in football.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Exactly, getting a call and you've got to go anywhere. No, Shane,
- 17:08Speaker 2: thank you for the time. If you can hear us,
- 17:10Speaker 2: appreciate you. I know you're getting a call We're at
- 17:12Speaker 2: time for you, so go to media day.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Have the best time.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah, good luck.
- 17:16Speaker 4: All right, thanks guys, appreciate you.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Hed.
- 17:17Speaker 2: This episode of FT is presented by Fox one and
- 17:23Speaker 2: Fox one is now live stream all your Fox favorites
- 17:25Speaker 2: together in one place. MLB postseason, which is now up
- 17:28Speaker 2: to World Series.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Shane Bieber.
- 17:30Speaker 6: Shane Bieber pitch game three or four, six or seven
- 17:33Speaker 6: or whenever. He won't tell us.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't believe like he knows. Come on, he hasn't,
- 17:37Speaker 3: no cratzy. I bet he doesn't know. I'm gonna go.
- 17:42Speaker 3: He was honest. Okay, okay.
- 17:45Speaker 6: It's also like Logan Gilbert didn't know when we asked
- 17:47Speaker 6: him and he was I was like, which one one?
- 17:49Speaker 1: He was like, oh you know he knew. He was like,
- 17:52Speaker 1: am I allowed to say yes?
- 17:53Speaker 5: Yes? Yes? Yes?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Is it officially announced?
- 17:56Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 17:57Speaker 3: No, but listen.
- 17:58Speaker 6: I mean that he was a great interview first catching
- 18:00Speaker 6: pitch on Fox one. Whether it's game it's probably gonna
- 18:03Speaker 6: be game three, and if it goes to game seven,
- 18:04Speaker 6: he'll be out there in game seven. But I love
- 18:06Speaker 6: his confidence.
- 18:07Speaker 3: He's like, when we win the World Series, we're having
- 18:09Speaker 3: that party in the locker room. Trash. I freaking love it.
- 18:13Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 18:13Speaker 6: That's what's all about right there. And if he's got
- 18:16Speaker 6: that good slider going, he owns show hate too. By
- 18:17Speaker 6: the way, two for thirteen with six punchies. That's pretty good.
- 18:20Speaker 1: That is good.
- 18:21Speaker 2: So Joe Hay won't be pitching that game. So you're
- 18:23Speaker 2: saying that was the game where the batwoke up?
- 18:26Speaker 3: Who wasn't that said? Show Hey didn't do anything special
- 18:28Speaker 3: that game? That was dumb.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Take Rob Parker.
- 18:32Speaker 3: I like you, Rob, but that was bad take.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I'm all four going outside the box, but like, you
- 18:36Speaker 2: have to give me something. I actually opened up the
- 18:38Speaker 2: article and I was like, is he gonna say something interesting?
- 18:42Speaker 2: And he didn't say anything. He just said, like, people
- 18:44Speaker 2: have hit three homers in a game before, people have
- 18:47Speaker 2: pitched really well before, but.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Not in the same game. Roberts anyways, I like. I
- 18:53Speaker 3: like Rob too. He's a he's a good guy.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I do too.
- 18:55Speaker 2: We can bring him on, he's been on. Yeah, he's
- 18:59Speaker 2: super nice. We should I mean, we should get him
- 19:01Speaker 2: back too.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Is he I think he is.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I mean maybe that contributes to his take.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I don't know, but what I can tell you is
- 19:10Speaker 2: seven day free trial, foxwe dot Com, QR code on
- 19:13Speaker 2: the screen Brady on Sundays exactly. And the World Series,
- 19:20Speaker 2: which is most important for you right now Friday night.
- 19:23Speaker 2: If you don't know where to find it and you
- 19:25Speaker 2: need a spot, you don't have TV, cable whatever, Fox
- 19:29Speaker 2: one is your solution. Grant Brisbee is back on foul Territory.
- 19:34Speaker 2: You can find all of his work in the Athletic.
- 19:37Speaker 2: He's one of the funnier writers out there. I'll say
- 19:39Speaker 2: it for Grand He goes for it. He takes chances
- 19:41Speaker 2: to try and make you laugh and I appreciate that.
- 19:44Speaker 2: So Grant, good to see you, and we're bringing you
- 19:46Speaker 2: on at least to start here to talk about your
- 19:49Speaker 2: latest The Lover's Guide to the twenty twenty five World Series.
- 19:52Speaker 2: So how you doing and how are you taking care
- 19:54Speaker 2: of the lovers out there.
- 19:57Speaker 8: I'm doing very very well. As you know, I grew
- 20:00Speaker 8: up a Giants fan writing about the Giants, so it's
- 20:02Speaker 8: a it's a pleasure to be on here at the
- 20:04Speaker 8: Giants catching legend and also a j Perzinski.
- 20:08Speaker 6: But I have a bubble head, Grant, Look at this,
- 20:11Speaker 6: Look at this, I have a Giants bubble ahead.
- 20:13Speaker 3: You know what Crowds doesn't have one of those, does he? No,
- 20:16Speaker 3: Crowds doesn't, but not yet.
- 20:17Speaker 8: I'm working on. I got an article in the can.
- 20:20Speaker 3: I retired either by the Giants, like minus.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Last year, you had me on after writing The Hater's
- 20:29Speaker 8: Guide to the World Series because it was the Dodgers
- 20:32Speaker 8: and Yankees and it was an annoying matchup. It was
- 20:35Speaker 8: a fun matchup ended up being a short world series,
- 20:38Speaker 8: maybe not the most even, but a fun world series.
- 20:42Speaker 8: But it was still an annoying world series leading up
- 20:44Speaker 8: to it. So I had a totally different preview in mind,
- 20:47Speaker 8: and my editor said, no, do that for last year.
- 20:50Speaker 8: You hate this world series, right, But I don't. I
- 20:53Speaker 8: like this world series. This world series is fun, it's fresh,
- 20:56Speaker 8: it's new. So so I'm all.
- 20:57Speaker 2: In, Okay, why give me some more context on why
- 21:02Speaker 2: the half the world series is the same from last year,
- 21:06Speaker 2: but now you're suddenly in love.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Well last year Dodgers Yankees. Look, I know the Yankees
- 21:13Speaker 8: haven't had the same success that they had in the
- 21:16Speaker 8: turnal of litt Millennium, but they're still the Yankees. They're
- 21:17Speaker 8: still a boogeyman.
- 21:19Speaker 7: You know.
- 21:19Speaker 8: The Cowboys haven't been to a Super Bowl in thirty
- 21:21Speaker 8: five years, people still get annoyed by the Cowboys, and
- 21:24Speaker 8: the Yankees have that same vibe. There's still kind of
- 21:27Speaker 8: a payroll bully. They're still in the postseason every year.
- 21:31Speaker 8: So you could pick the Yankees, but you didn't feel
- 21:33Speaker 8: good about it. The Blue Jays are friendlier. They're named
- 21:36Speaker 8: after a well, an annoying bird, but they're named after
- 21:39Speaker 8: a bird. They're like, they're a fun, new, fresh team.
- 21:43Speaker 8: They've got they've got flat Tito, they've got so much
- 21:47Speaker 8: going for him, they've got a hot shot rookie, and
- 21:49Speaker 8: it's a new team in a hungry fan base. Now
- 21:52Speaker 8: you have someone to root for if you're not a
- 21:55Speaker 8: Dodgers fan, and so you have an entire country rooting
- 21:59Speaker 8: against you, and then you've got most of the baseball
- 22:01Speaker 8: loving world rooting against you. And if you're a Dodgers fan,
- 22:04Speaker 8: that's perfect.
- 22:05Speaker 1: That's perfect.
- 22:06Speaker 8: I mean, you don't have to you don't have to
- 22:08Speaker 8: overthink that. It's it's great. You love it when when
- 22:12Speaker 8: the world is against you. I mean, right now, I
- 22:13Speaker 8: didn't plan this, but you know I'm wearing a Golden
- 22:15Speaker 8: State Warriors sweatshirt. When they got Kevin Durant. Yeah, that
- 22:19Speaker 8: was funny. Everyone got mad at the Warriors and it
- 22:22Speaker 8: was one of the best times in my sporting fan life.
- 22:25Speaker 8: So I love that everyone has a rooting interest in
- 22:28Speaker 8: this World series.
- 22:29Speaker 6: So yeah, I was gonna get on you because you're
- 22:31Speaker 6: wearing a Dodger blue sweater and you're a Giants fan.
- 22:33Speaker 3: That's unacceptable.
- 22:34Speaker 6: So I'm glad that you showed that because I was like, man,
- 22:37Speaker 6: is he really wearing a Dodger sweatshirt? So one of
- 22:39Speaker 6: the reasons if you're if you don't if you picked
- 22:41Speaker 6: the room for the Dodgers, what were the three reasons
- 22:43Speaker 6: you said you're a Dodger fan.
- 22:44Speaker 3: You're Sandy Kofax or what was the third one?
- 22:47Speaker 8: You like showho Tony. That's reasonable, you know, especially I
- 22:51Speaker 8: if you're overseas or if you're just getting into baseball,
- 22:55Speaker 8: maybe you're a kid and you live somewhere where there's
- 22:57Speaker 8: not a baseball team or there is, and you still
- 22:59Speaker 8: love Stani. Totally fine, And it's not like if you
- 23:03Speaker 8: choose another reason, like you like the logo, you're a dork.
- 23:06Speaker 8: It just means that's what most people. They found their
- 23:09Speaker 8: way to the Dodgers by being born into it by
- 23:13Speaker 8: living in a certain area or being a big fan
- 23:15Speaker 8: of Otani. The rest of the world falls outside that circle,
- 23:19Speaker 8: and it's a pretty big circle.
- 23:21Speaker 5: So do you think Dave Roberts is right that the
- 23:24Speaker 5: Dodgers are ruining baseball?
- 23:28Speaker 8: I've thought that since like nineteen eighty two, and so
- 23:34Speaker 8: I'm a little biased. No, I don't think, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 8: when you go back, if the Dodgers, how would I put?
- 23:41Speaker 8: They're at least doing it in a way that I
- 23:43Speaker 8: don't think you can repeat ad infinitum. I don't think that,
- 23:48Speaker 8: no matter how hard you want the next show Heotani,
- 23:50Speaker 8: that there's going to be a next show heo Atani.
- 23:53Speaker 8: I don't think that the next time there's a Mookie
- 23:55Speaker 8: bets that his very rich parent franchise will give him
- 23:59Speaker 8: up that easy. I think a lot of things have
- 24:01Speaker 8: kind of fallen into place, and they have the Juggernaut already,
- 24:05Speaker 8: they have the structural advantages, like I don't want to
- 24:08Speaker 8: minimize that, but this kind of Dodger's dominance really relies
- 24:13Speaker 8: on Shohyotani, and he's you know, he's not gonna come
- 24:17Speaker 8: around again. He's a superhero. This is it so that
- 24:20Speaker 8: that's the way to kind of make peace with it.
- 24:23Speaker 2: You're talking me into really liking this matchup the Dodgers
- 24:28Speaker 2: of the Evil Empire. You've got the star power with
- 24:31Speaker 2: guys like Otani and Vladdie. But here I'll add this
- 24:34Speaker 2: to the mix. And I know you included this in
- 24:37Speaker 2: your all inclusive article. You have traditional it sounds where
- 24:42Speaker 2: it even say traditional starting pitching where they actually will
- 24:46Speaker 2: keep going in games. And then you also have contact
- 24:52Speaker 2: and I know they can hit the slug too, but
- 24:54Speaker 2: contact top contact team in the sport.
- 24:57Speaker 1: That's how you hook me in.
- 25:00Speaker 8: Yeah, it's that is the promise of a really fun
- 25:04Speaker 8: world series. So even when you have Dodgers Yankees, it's
- 25:08Speaker 8: a great matchup. You have great players on both sides.
- 25:10Speaker 8: But you sort of knew how the outs were going
- 25:12Speaker 8: to get made. You were going to see a lot
- 25:14Speaker 8: of swing and miss. You're going to see a lot
- 25:16Speaker 8: of big time swings that were going for the fences
- 25:20Speaker 8: and not getting it. But that's their game. This is different.
- 25:23Speaker 8: This is a Blue Jays team that loves putting the
- 25:25Speaker 8: ball in play. The Dodgers led the majors and strikeouts,
- 25:28Speaker 8: so it's not it's not a given that they're just
- 25:30Speaker 8: gonna whap the ball all over the ballpark. But they
- 25:33Speaker 8: put the ball in play, and that's when things happen.
- 25:36Speaker 8: It sounds simple, it sounds reductive, but anything can happen
- 25:40Speaker 8: when a ball is in play. That is when you
- 25:42Speaker 8: get the triple play. That is when you get the
- 25:44Speaker 8: triple down the line. You get an inside the park
- 25:46Speaker 8: home run, you get someone thrown out at the plate
- 25:48Speaker 8: trying for an inside the park home run. You get
- 25:50Speaker 8: a routine grounder to short, you get someone making the
- 25:53Speaker 8: best play you've ever seen in your life at short.
- 25:54Speaker 8: Balls in play are fun. Strikeouts are cool if the
- 25:57Speaker 8: moment is right, but balls in play are just That's
- 26:01Speaker 8: why we watch baseball, and I get why teams are
- 26:03Speaker 8: strikeout heavy. I get how do you maximize your chances
- 26:07Speaker 8: of success if the ball isn't in play? But let's
- 26:10Speaker 8: let's see some baseball and the Blue Jays offer that.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Okay, before we go to your team, who are you
- 26:17Speaker 3: rooting for and who's gonna win?
- 26:20Speaker 8: I am a credentialed member of the Baseball Writers Association
- 26:25Speaker 8: of America and I can't officially root for a team.
- 26:29Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 26:30Speaker 6: That's what I said. I guess that wasn't the question
- 26:33Speaker 6: who do you want to win? And who's gonna win?
- 26:37Speaker 8: Dodgers are gonna win, Okay, yeah, because they're they're they're
- 26:41Speaker 8: the better team in Yeah, well it's you know, you
- 26:46Speaker 8: can be a Giants, a Giants writer, and be a
- 26:48Speaker 8: fatalist too. I think that fits in, uh with the
- 26:51Speaker 8: general ethos.
- 26:52Speaker 4: Uh.
- 26:53Speaker 8: Who do I want to win? Honestly, like it sounds
- 26:55Speaker 8: like a bit, but I just want some like a
- 26:58Speaker 8: fun World Series, I really do. You just want a
- 27:01Speaker 8: game set like to me the ending of the World
- 27:04Speaker 8: Baseball Classic with Otani and Trout. It was so perfect
- 27:07Speaker 8: it felt scripted. I want something like that, and I
- 27:10Speaker 8: don't care if it's Trout striking out or Trout getting
- 27:12Speaker 8: the home run in this analogy, but I want seven
- 27:16Speaker 8: games and I want people to be delirious. The best
- 27:19Speaker 8: baseball experience I've ever had in my life was Game
- 27:22Speaker 8: five of the twenty seventeen World Series. I was in
- 27:25Speaker 8: the auxiliary press box in Houston and just watching a
- 27:29Speaker 8: ballpark lose its mind in one of the wackiest games
- 27:31Speaker 8: I've ever seen. I want that, but without revelations later
- 27:36Speaker 8: that that maybe might spoil it a little bit.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Okay, so you want Kershaw to close it out for
- 27:41Speaker 3: the Dodgers. Cool?
- 27:42Speaker 6: As a Giants fan, I please, okay, But all right,
- 27:47Speaker 6: so here's my choy. We're gonna go to the Giants.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Now we're gonna go to your team. What did you
- 27:50Speaker 6: think of the new manager? Higher, I think it's fascinating. Listen,
- 27:53Speaker 6: Do I hope Tony Vaitello six undred percent? Do I
- 27:56Speaker 6: think he's a good college coach? Absolutely?
- 27:57Speaker 3: Do we know what kind of MLB manager is going
- 27:59Speaker 3: to be? Absolutely not.
- 28:01Speaker 6: But it is gonna be mesmerizing to watch who he hires,
- 28:03Speaker 6: what staffhires, where he goes. What is game planning is
- 28:07Speaker 6: like what is bullpen? It's gonna be must watch TV
- 28:09Speaker 6: for me every night to see how he handles his
- 28:11Speaker 6: starting in spring training.
- 28:14Speaker 8: That's really the only way to think about it. The
- 28:17Speaker 8: only way to approach this is this is interesting. This
- 28:21Speaker 8: is curious because you've got not only is he never
- 28:24Speaker 8: managed a game of the majors, He's never managed a
- 28:27Speaker 8: game in the miners. He's never played a game in
- 28:29Speaker 8: the miners. He has as many professional hits as I do,
- 28:32Speaker 8: and he's just he's a total unknown. And I was
- 28:36Speaker 8: thinking about it. And yes, you know, he's a gregarious guy,
- 28:39Speaker 8: a leader of men, as they say, and he is
- 28:43Speaker 8: supposed to be a very good communicator. All these things
- 28:46Speaker 8: that are going to be what you want in any
- 28:49Speaker 8: managerial candidate in twenty twenty five. But I really do
- 28:53Speaker 8: think that one of the things that is a problem
- 28:56Speaker 8: with a lot of teams, not just the Giants, but
- 28:58Speaker 8: the Giants, is a lack of fundamental a lack of
- 29:01Speaker 8: just getting people on the same page when it comes
- 29:05Speaker 8: to hitting the cutoff man, making the right play, picking
- 29:08Speaker 8: up your third base, coaches around the bases. It sounds simple,
- 29:11Speaker 8: and I know Bob Melvin cared about that. It's not
- 29:13Speaker 8: like he's hearing this for the first time. You going,
- 29:15Speaker 8: wait a second, You're supposed to do those things. But
- 29:17Speaker 8: they needed a new voice, someone who is used to
- 29:22Speaker 8: not surprised when they're seeing a lack of fundamentals, perhaps
- 29:25Speaker 8: at the major league level, someone who is able to
- 29:28Speaker 8: communicate it without condescending. To these high paid superstars who
- 29:33Speaker 8: have never struggled, you know, in their careers, when it
- 29:37Speaker 8: comes to baseball over like a year long stretch, it
- 29:41Speaker 8: just it seems to me like it's a they're trying
- 29:43Speaker 8: to match that goal of teaching fundamentals with you know,
- 29:48Speaker 8: getting guys on board. Buster Posey's convinced, and that's it
- 29:52Speaker 8: would be different. I think if anyone else, if it
- 29:54Speaker 8: Brian Saviian or Farnsiety, if they were trying to convince me,
- 29:57Speaker 8: I'd be like, Okay, that's that's a big task. When
- 30:00Speaker 8: Uster Posey says I think this will work, then it
- 30:03Speaker 8: becomes less risky and more oh, this is interesting and
- 30:06Speaker 8: we'll see how it works.
- 30:08Speaker 5: Do you feel like he was definitely his number one
- 30:10Speaker 5: choice or do you feel like someone else denied the
- 30:14Speaker 5: position or didn't want to take take on what it
- 30:17Speaker 5: meant to manage the giants when they got Once they
- 30:20Speaker 5: got farther in an interview process, it.
- 30:23Speaker 8: Was Nick Hutley's job, if you wanted it. I don't
- 30:25Speaker 8: think that's a secret. I think that you know, he's
- 30:29Speaker 8: super close with Buster Posey when they met. I'm sure
- 30:32Speaker 8: Posey at the time was just thinking for an entire season,
- 30:35Speaker 8: this kid's going to be a manager one day, and
- 30:38Speaker 8: you know, baseball works out in funny ways, and he
- 30:40Speaker 8: had a chance, but he didn't want to go right
- 30:42Speaker 8: back to the grind and Honestly, I don't know how
- 30:45Speaker 8: anyone does, you know, retire as a player and then
- 30:48Speaker 8: go immediately back to the grind. I feel like I
- 30:51Speaker 8: would sleep for twenty years. I can't even believe you
- 30:53Speaker 8: guys do this like I would. Just it's so much
- 30:57Speaker 8: work to be, you know, a manager, swip player, a coach,
- 31:01Speaker 8: and when you have kids at home. I'm surprised this
- 31:04Speaker 8: doesn't come up more often, but it was Hunley's job
- 31:07Speaker 8: if you wanted it.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Okay, Well, we'll see how Tony does. It's going to
- 31:12Speaker 1: be fascinating to follow.

- 31:17Speaker 2: coming season for San Francisco. Buster Posey is making things
- 31:20Speaker 2: a lot more interesting. I think that's safe to say
- 31:23Speaker 2: for the writers out there. He's rooting for fun stories
- 31:26Speaker 2: to cover.
- 31:26Speaker 1: And there you go. Grant, this was great.
