- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:08Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Blazarre and lazarn So everybody nailed it, joined has always Barak.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barnes. To all your points,
- 0:23Speaker 2: I don't think Gonzales is really necessarily that vocal guy.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I think there will be a point in his career
- 0:27Speaker 2: where he's sort of like the elder statesman and it
- 0:30Speaker 2: becomes like a quiet leader and just someone that people
- 0:33Speaker 2: lead by example and look at and say, that's that's
- 0:37Speaker 2: the the peak. You know, that's a guy that is
- 0:39Speaker 2: doing it at a really high level. I think the
- 0:41Speaker 2: biggest thing that Christian Gonzales can do to prove that
- 0:44Speaker 2: he has worth the money that he performance wise has
- 0:47Speaker 2: rightfully earned next off season is be appailable. So keeping
- 0:51Speaker 2: himself off the field is the opposite. I'm with you,
- 0:53Speaker 2: like what hurts his value more?
- 0:55Speaker 1: If he plays ten to twelve games but he plays
- 0:58Speaker 1: them at the level he played lest year better, Or
- 1:00Speaker 1: he plays sixteen or seventeen games but he's like eighty
- 1:04Speaker 1: percent of the player he was last year, which one
- 1:06Speaker 1: hurts him more.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Contractually not being available, Well, maybe we'll get out there
- 1:11Speaker 2: today a let's say practice in a couple of hours,
- 1:13Speaker 2: and we'll talk to Mike Vrabel too, who has been
- 1:16Speaker 2: pretty open about practice participation, and maybe Christian Conzalez will
- 1:21Speaker 2: be out there. I think there's a chance of that.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I think there's a chance of that here today. So
- 1:25Speaker 2: we're going to be talking Patriots. We're going to look
- 1:28Speaker 2: back here for the first half of the show and
- 1:31Speaker 2: talk about the Raiders game, and then we'll turn the page,
- 1:35Speaker 2: if you will, to Miami and the Dolphins and take
- 1:37Speaker 2: your calls and emails. So typical format in season format.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Good to have a game to talk to talk about,
- 1:44Speaker 2: I should say and break down Evan Lazar, Alex Barth,
- 1:47Speaker 2: Alex behind the glass with you here on the Patriots
- 1:51Speaker 2: Catch twenty two podcasts. Now, I want to open the
- 1:54Speaker 2: show with talking about the Raiders, and we have a
- 1:57Speaker 2: little exercise that we're to do here in a second
- 2:00Speaker 2: that I'm going to see you up four because you're
- 2:02Speaker 2: gonna drive the bus on that, so I'll tee you
- 2:05Speaker 2: up here in a second. But I want to talk
- 2:07Speaker 2: big picture first, as we normally do, and just get
- 2:10Speaker 2: your take and my take out there about this game
- 2:13Speaker 2: as a whole. I do want to say yesterday on
- 2:17Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered, I was a little agitated, Alex, I was
- 2:21Speaker 2: a little I was a little agitated. I was frustrated.
- 2:24Speaker 2: On Monday. You also have to sit in that traffic. No,
- 2:27Speaker 2: it wasn't because of traffic today Monday. You know, you
- 2:32Speaker 2: watch the film, you watch the offense, and I got
- 2:36Speaker 2: to admitted it got me in a little bit of
- 2:38Speaker 2: a dark place. You have a little bit of a
- 2:39Speaker 2: recency bias. Hey, I had a little bit of a
- 2:41Speaker 2: dark place because it looked clunky to the point where
- 2:46Speaker 2: it was very similar to what we've seen over the
- 2:49Speaker 2: last let's call it three years, going back to you know,
- 2:52Speaker 2: twenty twenty three and the last to you know of
- 2:55Speaker 2: Mac Jones and all that stuff, and I just I
- 2:57Speaker 2: don't want to do that again. I don't think anybody does.
- 3:02Speaker 2: But with that being said, it's week one, it's early.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That's definitely a fair shout. And I would say that
- 3:11Speaker 2: I have a lot more faith in this coaching staff,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Mike Rabel and Josh McDaniels, to adjust to what their
- 3:19Speaker 2: players do well and to evolve over the course of
- 3:22Speaker 2: a season and get better over the course of a season,
- 3:25Speaker 2: and I do think that their roster talent is improved.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I do trust in Drake May's talent and his ability
- 3:31Speaker 2: as well. So I feel better today about it than
- 3:36Speaker 2: I did certainly watching it back Monday and yesterday, because
- 3:41Speaker 2: I do want to have some faith and give some
- 3:43Speaker 2: grace to this coaching staff to get some tape, figure
- 3:47Speaker 2: out exactly what we're good at, what we're not good at,
- 3:50Speaker 2: what plays work, what plays don't work, get some tape
- 3:53Speaker 2: on opponents as well, and be able to game plan
- 3:55Speaker 2: opponents and have a better idea of what they're going
- 3:58Speaker 2: to do too. So I want to put that out
- 4:01Speaker 2: there because I don't want to These are all the
- 4:03Speaker 2: things that we're bringing up, or I'm going to bring up,
- 4:05Speaker 2: I should say, are currently small sea concerns like none
- 4:11Speaker 2: of no one's panicking over one loss and week one,
- 4:16Speaker 2: like no one's panicking, no one's trying to do any
- 4:20Speaker 2: of that. But that doesn't mean that we're going to
- 4:23Speaker 2: sit here and say that it was all it was
- 4:25Speaker 2: all fine like, because it wasn't. So there's kind of
- 4:29Speaker 2: a fine line there. But that was where I'm at
- 4:32Speaker 2: today with it, trying to turn the page here to
- 4:34Speaker 2: the Dolphins now. At that being said, the couple of
- 4:38Speaker 2: things that I just felt like need to be brought
- 4:41Speaker 2: up in terms of those small sea concerns. Number one,
- 4:46Speaker 2: at the very tippy top of the list, and I
- 4:48Speaker 2: don't think it's really particularly close, is Drake May's mechanics
- 4:52Speaker 2: and how he looked throwing the football on Sunday. I
- 4:54Speaker 2: thought it was concerning how disjointed his mechanics look, his footwork,
- 5:01Speaker 2: but also just his overall throwing mechanics as well, and
- 5:05Speaker 2: that's why we saw a lot of those May sprays
- 5:08Speaker 2: that we didn't see as many of those last year
- 5:12Speaker 2: as we maybe were expecting. This was what some people
- 5:16Speaker 2: had concerns about coming in when they drafted him out
- 5:19Speaker 2: of North Carolina. This was all of the warts that
- 5:22Speaker 2: we had talked about with Drake coming out in one game.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And I put that on mostly Josh McDaniels, but also
- 5:32Speaker 2: a little bit on the head coach too. This is
- 5:34Speaker 2: their project, like, this is their development now, and it's
- 5:38Speaker 2: their responsibility to make sure that Drake May is mechanically
- 5:43Speaker 2: tied together. That's on them as a coaching staff to
- 5:47Speaker 2: make sure that his feet and his hips and his
- 5:50Speaker 2: shoulders and everything's uncoiling the way that it should be,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and that his feet are pointed in the right directions
- 5:55Speaker 2: and his bases settled, and he's settled in the pocket
- 5:58Speaker 2: and he's poised.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:00Speaker 2: We see throws like the opening third down throw to
- 6:02Speaker 2: Pop Douglas, like that's just an air mail, the one
- 6:05Speaker 2: Hunter Henry over the middle, just an air mail. Uh,
- 6:08Speaker 2: the wan to Ramandre Stevenson where he tried to check
- 6:11Speaker 2: it down. You know, he moves up in the pocket nicely,
- 6:14Speaker 2: and then he jump throws the ball to Remandre instead
- 6:17Speaker 2: of just kind of settling back down, you know, relocating
- 6:21Speaker 2: in the pocket, getting his feet back set and just
- 6:23Speaker 2: making a really you know, a five yard throw right
- 6:27Speaker 2: in front of him, he ends up throwing it behind him.
- 6:29Speaker 2: It's almost tipped up in the air and it's almost
- 6:31Speaker 2: picked off by the linebacker as a result. These are
- 6:34Speaker 2: things that, like I said, when he did the scouting
- 6:37Speaker 2: report out of North Carolina when he was in the draft,
- 6:40Speaker 2: everybody had concerns about it. Seemed like they had him
- 6:43Speaker 2: in a good place last year with a lot of
- 6:45Speaker 2: these things where there was real, uh, steady improvement and
- 6:48Speaker 2: clear improvement with his footwork, and now this game looked
- 6:51Speaker 2: like regression to me. Now you could argue that the
- 6:54Speaker 2: regression is because he's in a new system and he's
- 6:57Speaker 2: still mentally trying to catch up with this system, so
- 6:59Speaker 2: that's making his physical mechanics decay a little bit. But
- 7:03Speaker 2: it is what it is. That was number one. Number
- 7:07Speaker 2: two the run game and the overall design of the offense.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I was a little bit disappointed in. I just they
- 7:14Speaker 2: have to be able to run the football. I wrote
- 7:16Speaker 2: about it. You have to be able to run the football.
- 7:19Speaker 2: As a team like this that's built this way. That's
- 7:22Speaker 2: got to be part of their identity. They have to
- 7:24Speaker 2: be able to run it. And they have to be
- 7:25Speaker 2: able to scheme off the run game, whether it's play action, pass, RPO,
- 7:30Speaker 2: whatever the case may be. That has to be a
- 7:32Speaker 2: big part of what they do this year. And they
- 7:35Speaker 2: have to be more creative. They have to be more
- 7:38Speaker 2: physical and move bodies off the line of scrimmage with
- 7:42Speaker 2: better technique on the offensive line, no doubt about it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: And they have to be able to run the football.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And the last one here, I'm just trying to fix
- 7:50Speaker 2: this thing because that's what we do. We come in here,
- 7:52Speaker 2: we solve all their problems. The last thing I thought defensively,
- 7:58Speaker 2: they play with more or of the identity that I
- 8:01Speaker 2: expected them to. They were aggressive, They had a really
- 8:05Speaker 2: good pressure at times on Gino Smith. I thought their
- 8:09Speaker 2: blitzes at times were effective, and they blitzed. I think
- 8:14Speaker 2: Rabel said we had good demeanor on our blitz, which
- 8:17Speaker 2: is a cool way to put it. I thought. I agreed.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I thought that they were physical, they were flying. They
- 8:22Speaker 2: did have some really good reps of coverage, even though
- 8:24Speaker 2: there was those nine explosive plays. I think what I
- 8:28Speaker 2: saw from the defensive standpoint was a first time play
- 8:32Speaker 2: caller in his first real regular season game maybe go
- 8:36Speaker 2: into the well one or one or two too many
- 8:39Speaker 2: times on some of these blitzes. You know it happened
- 8:42Speaker 2: early third and eleven Trey Tucker's touchdown pass. They sent
- 8:45Speaker 2: the house on third and eleven from right outside the
- 8:47Speaker 2: red zone. It's an aggressive call. I don't You're already
- 8:50Speaker 2: in scoring territory. To me, it's just just play coverage,
- 8:55Speaker 2: force a field goal, and do get some momentum from
- 8:59Speaker 2: getting a stop there and from holding without giving up
- 9:02Speaker 2: a touchdown. The third and twenty all out blitz again,
- 9:07Speaker 2: that Carlton Davis gave up the big play to Dante
- 9:09Speaker 2: Thornton that basically stealed the game for the Raiders. It's
- 9:12Speaker 2: third and twenty from the twenty five and you send
- 9:16Speaker 2: the whole house, and I just thought it was a
- 9:19Speaker 2: little aggressive. There's another time where they blitz both corners
- 9:23Speaker 2: coming off the edge on a third down, Like, let's
- 9:26Speaker 2: just let's calm down a little bit with the blitzes.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I think they'll That goes back to the original thing
- 9:32Speaker 2: that I was saying, though, I do think they'll get
- 9:35Speaker 2: better at that. I think Terrell Williams will learn from
- 9:38Speaker 2: these mistakes, or you want to calm mistakes. I think
- 9:42Speaker 2: they'll get better at it overall in terms of timing
- 9:44Speaker 2: up the blitzes. But they threw a lot at the
- 9:48Speaker 2: Raiders defensively in this game, and looking back on it,
- 9:52Speaker 2: maybe it was a little bit too much for a
- 9:55Speaker 2: week one. A lot of blitzes, a lot of exotic pressure,
- 9:58Speaker 2: a lot of cover zero. You know, it's just it
- 10:01Speaker 2: was a lot and it was aggressive. So those are
- 10:03Speaker 2: the three main things that stood out to me that
- 10:05Speaker 2: that kind of led to this loss. You know, if
- 10:07Speaker 2: you want to talk about the three the three ways
- 10:11Speaker 2: to an l right like that, that's sort of where
- 10:13Speaker 2: I'm at. Where were you at with this game? After
- 10:16Speaker 2: I conclude my ran so let me throw. Make sure
- 10:19Speaker 2: I don't think it's tough up.
- 10:20Speaker 1: You're letting you saw ten minutes off the show, Yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 1: I thought, so my big takeaways and we can get
- 10:27Speaker 1: into my exercise on the offense. I actually liked Drake
- 10:29Speaker 1: May's first half. I thought more like, was it Amona
- 10:34Speaker 1: Lisa No? But I think he was like twelve of
- 10:38Speaker 1: eighteen fo one hundred and fifty yards or something at
- 10:39Speaker 1: halftime like he's fine, and then he throws the pick
- 10:43Speaker 1: and he was just never the same after the pick.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And whether that was him feeling he needed to get conservative,
- 10:49Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel's getting conservative because he got freaked out by
- 10:52Speaker 1: the turnover. Probably in reality, it's a little bit of both, right,
- 10:56Speaker 1: I thought, And we talked about this a lot this summer.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Rake made did a great job of bouncing back. He
- 11:02Speaker 1: didn't make a lot of mistakes. When he did, he
- 11:03Speaker 1: was generally good after them, and so to see, and
- 11:06Speaker 1: you mentioned some of the stuff with his mechanics. The
- 11:08Speaker 1: footwork in particular stood out to me a little jumpy
- 11:11Speaker 1: on some of his throwes. Wasn't really setting his feet
- 11:13Speaker 1: and throwing like he's going to make mistakes. That's the
- 11:18Speaker 1: way he's going to play. We've talked about this. He's
- 11:19Speaker 1: not the Brady Rogers quarterback that's going to throw four
- 11:22Speaker 1: picks in a season. The idea is he can do
- 11:24Speaker 1: some incredible things when you allow him to take risks.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And so whether it's him, whether it's McDaniels, you can't
- 11:30Speaker 1: completely alter the game plan off one turnover, and I
- 11:34Speaker 1: feel like they got away from a lot of what
- 11:35Speaker 1: was working. They didn't really target kish On Booty as much,
- 11:38Speaker 1: who I thought was great in this game, so that
- 11:41Speaker 1: that was on passing him on the run game. Do
- 11:44Speaker 1: you know how many times they ran the ball to
- 11:46Speaker 1: the right side. I think we talked about this last night,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but do you know how many times they ran the
- 11:48Speaker 1: ball to the right side?
- 11:49Speaker 2: It wasn't I think in some places having at.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Zero PFF and the NFL internal stats have it at one,
- 11:56Speaker 1: they have one in between right garden.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Right tackle, that's it not enough.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And so here's where you kind of have to get
- 12:04Speaker 1: into the nuance of it, because you know me, Evan,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I will I will get after the coaches that this
- 12:10Speaker 1: is our game plan and we're going in and we're
- 12:11Speaker 1: doing this, and I don't care that it's not working.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I'm so smart it'll work eventually. I'm gonna keep doing it.
- 12:16Speaker 1: I hate it when coaches do that. And the run
- 12:18Speaker 1: game was not working, So credit to Josh McDaniels for
- 12:21Speaker 1: recognizing that and trying to make a change. I would
- 12:24Speaker 1: have tried to run on the right side behind Michael
- 12:27Speaker 1: Lan Morgan Moses, two good run blockers, and oh, by
- 12:30Speaker 1: the way, you maybe throw off the timing of their
- 12:31Speaker 1: best pass rusher and Max Crosby. I would have run
- 12:34Speaker 1: on the right side before I abandoned it all together,
- 12:37Speaker 1: so that it's not so much that they couldn't run
- 12:39Speaker 1: the ball. It's that they tried one thing, it didn't work,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and then abandoned it. And where there We know McDaniels
- 12:44Speaker 1: is a deep run game and I would have liked
- 12:46Speaker 1: to see him get a little more in the bag
- 12:47Speaker 1: with it before he just gave up on it. Defensively,
- 12:51Speaker 1: super blitz happy, I kind of look at that defensive
- 12:54Speaker 1: game plan and my big takeaway, I think I said
- 12:56Speaker 1: this to you right after the game, was like this
- 12:59Speaker 1: defensive game game plan is brilliant and makes a ton
- 13:03Speaker 1: of sense if you have Christian Goanzalees out there, like
- 13:06Speaker 1: this is with Christian Zalez and Carlton Davis. This is
- 13:09Speaker 1: exactly how I want to see them approach games. But
- 13:12Speaker 1: they didn't have Christian Zales So if that's ultimately what
- 13:16Speaker 1: it's going to be, I actually don't hate the overarching
- 13:18Speaker 1: philosophy they used. I do think maybe in spots to
- 13:21Speaker 1: your point, they were will to aggressive, but also on
- 13:23Speaker 1: the third and twenty they send seven, they don't really
- 13:26Speaker 1: get pressure.
- 13:27Speaker 2: So well, Gino did a great job to his career.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Well, first the credit, Gino gets paid to and he
- 13:33Speaker 1: was great in this game, and he loves.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Playing the pocket for so damn but it got great point.
- 13:37Speaker 1: That play reminded me of because I see Carlton Davis
- 13:40Speaker 1: getting some crap for that play, where like why did
- 13:42Speaker 1: he sit down on the route?
- 13:43Speaker 2: Why does he bite on the double move?
- 13:45Speaker 1: When you're sending seven, you're not necessarily there shouldn't be
- 13:50Speaker 1: time for a double move. And if you remember the
- 13:53Speaker 1: game here last year against the Rams, remember this they
- 13:55Speaker 1: sent eight and Cooper Cupp does something very similar out
- 13:59Speaker 1: of the slow and he beats Jonathan Jones. And I
- 14:02Speaker 1: remember people asking at the time, why are you know,
- 14:04Speaker 1: why is Jonathan Jones sitting down on this route because
- 14:07Speaker 1: he's trying to jump an underthrow because he assumed the court,
- 14:09Speaker 1: he assumes quarteracks is gonna have.
- 14:10Speaker 2: To throw it off his back foot. Yeah, and they did.
- 14:12Speaker 1: They sent eight on that play, and I think like
- 14:14Speaker 1: two linebackers got tied up whatever.
- 14:16Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Exactly, but they didn't get the pressure sending eight, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: that's going to throw off the secondary. And I thought
- 14:22Speaker 1: this was the same thing where Carlton Davis is playing
- 14:25Speaker 1: that play, like Gino Smith is throwing with a hand
- 14:27Speaker 1: in his face because they're sending seven and Gino Smith
- 14:30Speaker 1: should be throwing with a hand in his face, especially
- 14:32Speaker 1: on a double move, and he ends up getting enough
- 14:34Speaker 1: time because they couldn't get home. So that it was
- 14:37Speaker 1: more the execution than the game plan for me on defense, Like,
- 14:39Speaker 1: I actually liked that game plan. I think that's gonna
- 14:42Speaker 1: be really fun once they get Christian and Zalez back
- 14:45Speaker 1: and they maybe face some of these younger quarterbacks when
- 14:47Speaker 1: you get in that like Saints, Titans, Browns, Falcons. Running
- 14:50Speaker 1: the schedule even the Panthers coming in a few weeks,
- 14:55Speaker 1: right with Bryce Young. So No, it's a good point,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and I like the game plan. I just and that
- 15:00Speaker 1: maybe goes to the week one thing where the execution
- 15:02Speaker 1: wasn't fully there.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I it's a good point about against different quarterbacks,
- 15:07Speaker 2: younger quarterbacks, like you start sending pressure and from different
- 15:11Speaker 2: places and running you know, simulated pressures where you don't
- 15:14Speaker 2: know who's coming and who's dropping like that can definitely
- 15:17Speaker 2: put a young quarterback in a blender. Yeah, that's not
- 15:19Speaker 2: Geno Smith. Geno Smith is a veteran QB that's been
- 15:22Speaker 2: around the block, that's seen a lot of things. I
- 15:25Speaker 2: think one of his best traits because I know there's
- 15:27Speaker 2: there's always like I feel like we're at a ligne
- 15:30Speaker 2: with Gino where he's almost like the Andy Dalton of
- 15:33Speaker 2: this like era of football, where it's like is Gino
- 15:35Speaker 2: good or is he not good? Right? And then people
- 15:37Speaker 2: have different people have different opinion. Yeah, like people have
- 15:42Speaker 2: different opinions on Gino. But one of the things that
- 15:46Speaker 2: I think makes Gino really good is that he holds it.
- 15:49Speaker 2: He hangs in the pocket for he'll take it and
- 15:54Speaker 2: he'll sit on his back foot and he'll see you know.
- 15:57Speaker 2: They call it stare down the barrel, like stare down
- 16:00Speaker 2: the barrel knowing that somebody's about to hit him right
- 16:02Speaker 2: in the chin, and he will just wait and wait
- 16:05Speaker 2: and wait until the last possible second to let his
- 16:09Speaker 2: receivers uncover down the field and give them as much
- 16:11Speaker 2: time as he possibly can to let them uncover. Like
- 16:14Speaker 2: I don't know if other quarterbacks facing all out pressure
- 16:19Speaker 2: like on the third and twenty hang in there and
- 16:22Speaker 2: let Dante Thornton run that double move and see him
- 16:25Speaker 2: open down the field and bomb that throw. I think
- 16:28Speaker 2: a lot of quarterbacks get spooked and end up throwing
- 16:31Speaker 2: the ball away or taking a sack or something like that.
- 16:35Speaker 2: That wasn't the guy that they were facing on Sunday,
- 16:38Speaker 2: And I just thought it was an aggressive plan that
- 16:41Speaker 2: I agree with you with Christian Zalez. Maybe it pans
- 16:44Speaker 2: out better. And I also think that you learn from
- 16:47Speaker 2: some of those calls, like Terrell Williams. I don't think
- 16:49Speaker 2: is going to bring the houses off the next week.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I really don't. I don't think that he'll bring the
- 16:54Speaker 2: house in certain situations like they did. And I'm glad
- 16:58Speaker 2: you bought it. Brought up the RAMS thing from last year. Yeah,
- 17:01Speaker 2: because to me, like DeMarcus Covington and Drod Mayo got
- 17:07Speaker 2: absolutely dragged for that call, and probably rightfully so. But
- 17:14Speaker 2: if we're gonna drag DeMarcus Covington and Girod Mayo for
- 17:17Speaker 2: it last year, we got to do the same this year.
- 17:19Speaker 2: And when you're over aggressive and you're sending a lot
- 17:22Speaker 2: of pressure and you get burned and for nine explosive plays,
- 17:26Speaker 2: and I think it's only fair to judge it the
- 17:29Speaker 2: same way.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Well, so yes, so no, but I think there's an
- 17:32Speaker 1: element of and this is what I said last year,
- 17:36Speaker 1: when you send seven, when you send eight, you should
- 17:38Speaker 1: get pressure.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I think they got pressure on the Dante Thornton play,
- 17:42Speaker 2: but Gino rolled out to his right and kind of
- 17:45Speaker 2: drifted back in the pocket and bought himself with like
- 17:48Speaker 2: that little bit of extra time that he needed to
- 17:51Speaker 2: that throat.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I just yeah, I mean, look, I don't love the call,
- 17:54Speaker 1: but and Rabel said it after the game, like you
- 17:56Speaker 1: forced the three and out there and you get the
- 17:58Speaker 1: ball back and right. The pressure was very inconsistent, and
- 18:03Speaker 1: there were times it was great, and I mean we'll
- 18:05Speaker 1: get to up and downs and I guys from both
- 18:07Speaker 1: sides on that.
- 18:08Speaker 2: But yeah, all right, let's move it along here. We
- 18:11Speaker 2: can be bogged down by a lot of this for
- 18:13Speaker 2: a while. Football fans know that traditions matter, turning moments
- 18:16Speaker 2: together into something truly epic. There what inspire us to
- 18:20Speaker 2: make our massa and tostitos the traditional way, starting with

- 18:34Speaker 2: team bag, and scan the code for a chance to
- 18:37Speaker 2: score an epic experience with the Patriots. Tostitos. Tradition matters,
- 18:41Speaker 2: all right, So we have an exercise that we want
- 18:43Speaker 2: to do that is basically buy or sell from week one.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I called it realer fake.
- 18:49Speaker 1: We all a fake, sure, so the idea and I
- 18:52Speaker 1: wrote a callum about this on ninety eight five the
- 18:53Speaker 1: sports sub dot com. Basically, week one is and this
- 18:56Speaker 1: is across the NFL. It's not patriotsing. Week one is
- 18:59Speaker 1: always the most like chaotic, nonsense, unpredictable week of the
- 19:04Speaker 1: year because there's so much you don't know coming out
- 19:07Speaker 1: of the offseason and these teams have new rosters and
- 19:09Speaker 1: new coaches and things like that, and it's really easy
- 19:12Speaker 1: to jump to conclusions from week one.
- 19:16Speaker 2: But as we last year is the perfect example of this.
- 19:20Speaker 1: The Patriots went into Cincinnati and they got a disciplined, tough,
- 19:26Speaker 1: gritty win, yes against a good football team, and we
- 19:29Speaker 1: all sat like, okay, is this real or not? And
- 19:31Speaker 1: it ended up to like that was not indicative of
- 19:34Speaker 1: who the twenty twenty four Patriots were going to be,
- 19:36Speaker 1: right fortunately not unfortunately not so not to do that
- 19:39Speaker 1: big picture with this game, but just to kind of
- 19:42Speaker 1: break it down because there were the big thing is
- 19:45Speaker 1: the surprise is right, there's some things we saw that
- 19:47Speaker 1: we thought we'd saw and the fact that we saw
- 19:49Speaker 1: it and kind of projected, okay, that's maybe more real.
- 19:52Speaker 1: But some of the stuff we didn't expect to see.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Is this real? Is this actually a telltale sign of
- 19:59Speaker 1: what the twenty twenty five Patriots will.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Be or is it fake?
- 20:03Speaker 1: Is this just for whatever reason, this game, this matchup,
- 20:06Speaker 1: this was week one, and you know, we instantly want
- 20:09Speaker 1: to say the team we saw in the field.
- 20:11Speaker 2: In week one is the team we'll see for eighteen games.
- 20:13Speaker 1: But this one probably is something we'll look back on
- 20:15Speaker 1: as an outlier. It just happened to happen week one,
- 20:18Speaker 1: so we put more weight onto it. So I had
- 20:21Speaker 1: five kind of big picture topics. If you want to
- 20:23Speaker 1: add some to at the end, you can. Okay, the
- 20:25Speaker 1: first one I think is pretty easy, but it's a
- 20:26Speaker 1: good way to if you don't understand what the exercise is,
- 20:28Speaker 1: it's a good way to get it. Sure, Patriots threw
- 20:31Speaker 1: the ball forty six times in this game. I think
- 20:33Speaker 1: they had fifty three dropbacks ultimately, which were tied for
- 20:35Speaker 1: the highest and the highest in the league. They only
- 20:37Speaker 1: ran They only called thirteen design runs real or fake.
- 20:41Speaker 2: The Patriots will be a pass heavy team this year.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I hope that's fake. I think it's well, no, wait,
- 20:46Speaker 2: it's not what we hope we're predicting. I think it'll
- 20:49Speaker 2: be fake. I think it's fake. And I and do
- 20:51Speaker 2: you have run game more specifically in there? Or is
- 20:54Speaker 2: that is that? So I have a take on the
- 20:56Speaker 2: run game. I don't know if you want me to
- 20:57Speaker 2: give it now or if you want me to give it.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You can you can lead and what like pass heavy
- 21:02Speaker 1: not run heavy, however.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Because to me it comes down to can they can
- 21:07Speaker 2: they execute the run game? Right? I don't think they
- 21:09Speaker 2: want to be past heavy, right, But like we.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Saw on so okay, so here's another one, my next
- 21:14Speaker 1: one and we can kind of tie it in the
- 21:18Speaker 1: So I had originally had the pass protection being good
- 21:20Speaker 1: because the past protection was solidness.
- 21:22Speaker 2: It's fine until the end. We can get to that.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But like, all right, so I'll flip this, Yes, inability
- 21:29Speaker 1: to run the ball real or fake? I'm gonna go,
- 21:34Speaker 1: are the Patriots gonna be a bad run team this year?
- 21:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna go It's hard to say because we only
- 21:41Speaker 2: have one game of film.
- 21:42Speaker 1: But this is the point, this is this is hard
- 21:44Speaker 1: to say. We want to subscribe, so we only have
- 21:46Speaker 1: one game. So people are gonna look at this, and
- 21:48Speaker 1: because there's no nothing else, you look at it and say,
- 21:52Speaker 1: is this what the Patriots are?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Or was this a weird Week one thing? Because Week
- 21:56Speaker 2: one is weird because Week one is I'm always weird.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna say fake. But I I think the concern
- 22:00Speaker 2: that I have with the run game, and this I'll
- 22:02Speaker 2: give my take because as well, the concern that I
- 22:05Speaker 2: have with the run game is that I thought that
- 22:08Speaker 2: they were not creative enough with how they ran the football.
- 22:12Speaker 2: And when I watch film around the league of other teams,
- 22:16Speaker 2: like when I watched the Colts Dolphins game, it really
- 22:19Speaker 2: was a nice juxtaposition with those two teams of a
- 22:22Speaker 2: gun run team versus an under center run team. The
- 22:25Speaker 2: Dolphins are an under center West Coast Kyle Shanahan Tree offense,
- 22:29Speaker 2: right so they run the ball from pistol or from
- 22:31Speaker 2: under center, whereas the Eagles are running a West Coast
- 22:36Speaker 2: college system where they have RPOs and zone reads and
- 22:39Speaker 2: they're running the ball from the gun. And when you
- 22:42Speaker 2: run the ball from under center, there's basically those are
- 22:45Speaker 2: the two buckets. Like there's the the Andy Reid Eagles
- 22:48Speaker 2: offshoot offense right now that is gun heavy. That's Reid
- 22:53Speaker 2: option or RPO heavy from the gun yep. Then there
- 22:57Speaker 2: is the Shanahan Tree guys that are under When you're
- 23:01Speaker 2: under center run team like the Shanahan entry does, there's
- 23:04Speaker 2: a ton of window dressing. There's motion. There's you know,
- 23:08Speaker 2: motion at the snap. There's motion before the snap. There's jets,
- 23:12Speaker 2: there's orbits where the guys are going around behind the quarterback.
- 23:15Speaker 2: There's faking right you know, the quarterbacks, you know, has
- 23:18Speaker 2: that slight of hand where he's faking to the different options.
- 23:21Speaker 2: And then there's also boots which like make the backside
- 23:25Speaker 2: of the formation respect it. And all of this creates
- 23:29Speaker 2: space and it opens gaps in the run game, and
- 23:33Speaker 2: it stretches the defense horizontally and challenges their communication and
- 23:37Speaker 2: their assignments so that you can create voids and pockets
- 23:40Speaker 2: of space into the defense with motion and with misdirection.
- 23:44Speaker 2: That's the under center team. That's what they do. The
- 23:48Speaker 2: RPO gun run team. They do it by we're going
- 23:51Speaker 2: to attach routes to this so that you have to
- 23:54Speaker 2: cover the routes. And now we're taking guys out of
- 23:56Speaker 2: the box because we're two over three over here, right
- 23:59Speaker 2: there's two receips to three defenders. So now it's just math,
- 24:02Speaker 2: like there's only so many guys you can put in
- 24:04Speaker 2: the box. If you're gonna have a let's call it
- 24:08Speaker 2: like a bubble out on the outside where there's like
- 24:10Speaker 2: a bubble to the wide receiver. If you're gonna have that,
- 24:13Speaker 2: and they're gonna put three guys over there, there's only
- 24:16Speaker 2: eleven guys on the field, so you're adding numbers advantages
- 24:21Speaker 2: to the box so that you can get hat on
- 24:23Speaker 2: the hat. From a blocking perspective, When I watched the
- 24:25Speaker 2: Patriots run the football on Sunday when they went under center,
- 24:30Speaker 2: I don't think there was enough window dressing. I don't
- 24:32Speaker 2: think there was enough misdirection, deception, all those different types
- 24:36Speaker 2: of things. I believe. It's just my belief, Yep. The
- 24:40Speaker 2: defenses are too good nowadays to just line up and
- 24:43Speaker 2: hand the ball off and try to smash heads. I
- 24:45Speaker 2: don't think it's gonna work. There's two The defenses are
- 24:48Speaker 2: too fast, they're too athletic. They have too many scheme
- 24:51Speaker 2: of related things that they can do now to shut
- 24:54Speaker 2: down run games. You know, gap penetration, stunting, run, blitzing. Like,
- 24:58Speaker 2: these defenses are too sift caated and the athletes are
- 25:01Speaker 2: too good that if you just run the football directly
- 25:04Speaker 2: up the gut like they used to do twenty thirty
- 25:06Speaker 2: years ago, it just doesn't work the same way that
- 25:08Speaker 2: it once did. The defenses are too evolved at this
- 25:11Speaker 2: point to do it that way. So if you're gonna
- 25:13Speaker 2: be an under center run team, you have to dress
- 25:15Speaker 2: it up. It has to be creative, it has to
- 25:17Speaker 2: have you know, window dressing to it, or you can
- 25:20Speaker 2: spread them out and be a gun run team and
- 25:22Speaker 2: use the options to your advantage. The Patriots, to me,
- 25:25Speaker 2: were like caught in between, like they didn't have either
- 25:28Speaker 2: one of those things going on often.
- 25:29Speaker 1: Enough to bring it back to the exercise, and those
- 25:32Speaker 1: are all good points. Is this something where the Patriots
- 25:35Speaker 1: are just going to have an uncreative run game and
- 25:38Speaker 1: struggle to run the ball and be forced into being
- 25:40Speaker 1: a more dedicated dropback pass team, which Mike Griebel said
- 25:42Speaker 1: he doesn't want to happen, right, Or is this a
- 25:45Speaker 1: weird Week one thing where we know Josh McDaniels builds
- 25:49Speaker 1: his offense up as the year goes on and that
- 25:50Speaker 1: stuff is coming, but for one reason or another, wasn't
- 25:53Speaker 1: a big part of the Week one game plan.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I definitely worry that it's more going to be this
- 25:58Speaker 2: is what they this is what they install, and this
- 26:00Speaker 2: is what they're doing. But I reserve judgment to be corrected.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Well, if that's the case, and you think it's real
- 26:08Speaker 1: that they end up being kind of a pass heavy
- 26:09Speaker 1: team this year, because if they're not gonna.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I get the exercise, but it's hard to say.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I think I think they're gonna because I have more
- 26:18Speaker 1: to running the football because the other thing, right.
- 26:20Speaker 2: By committing more to run the football only works if
- 26:22Speaker 2: you can run the ball. So here's the other thing
- 26:23Speaker 2: for me, and I brought this up earlier.
- 26:25Speaker 1: They only ran to the right side once Mike go
- 26:29Speaker 1: and win when Morgan Moses are both plus run blockers,
- 26:31Speaker 1: and I know Campbell and Wilson were good at that
- 26:33Speaker 1: in the summer their rookies, and they had their rookie
- 26:35Speaker 1: moments in that game. I talked about it with David
- 26:37Speaker 1: Andrews on that podcast on Monday, which people can check
- 26:39Speaker 1: out Run Behind your Best run Blockers, and I think
- 26:42Speaker 1: it might look a little better. I know that's probably oversimplified.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Well, I think that some of that was I hear you,
- 26:48Speaker 2: But I think the direction of the runs is because
- 26:50Speaker 2: of Max Crosby. I think they were trying to run
- 26:52Speaker 2: away from Max Crosby. Why not run out of you?
- 26:55Speaker 1: The upset the timing of him as a pack awesome
- 26:57Speaker 1: run player, all right.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I I it might have been overthinking it and giving
- 27:02Speaker 2: him too much credit in some ways if you want
- 27:04Speaker 2: to go there, But he's just as good of a
- 27:07Speaker 2: run defender as he is a pass rusher. He's a
- 27:10Speaker 2: great player, and so I think that they decided we're
- 27:13Speaker 2: going to run at Koons, We're gonna run at Adam
- 27:15Speaker 2: Butler like we're going to run at different people, and
- 27:17Speaker 2: we're not going to try to put Max Crosby at
- 27:19Speaker 2: the point of attack. That's just my theory on why
- 27:22Speaker 2: they did it that way. Yeah, we'll see if that
- 27:24Speaker 2: is a that cannot be and I don't think that
- 27:28Speaker 2: Josh will allow it to be. That can't be a
- 27:30Speaker 2: tell that they're only going to run left. I think
- 27:32Speaker 2: that that to me, if you want to go real
- 27:34Speaker 2: or fake like that is a Week one or not?
- 27:37Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I mean, look, are they going to be
- 27:39Speaker 1: the nineteen seventy eight Patriots. No, but I think they're
- 27:42Speaker 1: going to be better at running the ball all right.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Number two, pass protection. Patriots allowed a pressure on thirty
- 27:48Speaker 1: percent of the dropbacks, the fourteenth lowest rate in the
- 27:51Speaker 1: NFL Accordney Next Gen stats in Week one. That that
- 27:54Speaker 1: number over the rest of the year like thirty point two.
- 27:57Speaker 1: If they keep that pressure rate for the whole year
- 27:59Speaker 1: based off last yours numbers, that would be a top
- 28:01Speaker 1: ten pass blocking offensive line in the NFL Evan Reeler fake.
- 28:05Speaker 1: The Patriots will be a top fifteen pass blocking offensive
- 28:08Speaker 1: line this year.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I'm going to go real. Wow, Okay, I'm gonna go real.
- 28:13Speaker 2: And the reason why I'm going to go real is
- 28:15Speaker 2: because I think they were able to hold up in
- 28:20Speaker 2: pass protection. Because, to give him credit, I've done a
- 28:23Speaker 2: lot of Josh bashing today. To give him credit, I
- 28:26Speaker 2: think Josh is really good at protecting weak spots on
- 28:29Speaker 2: the offensive line. Like he did not really let Max
- 28:32Speaker 2: Crosby just tee off on Morgan Moses won on one
- 28:35Speaker 2: a ton in this game. There were chips. There was
- 28:38Speaker 2: slide to that side of the line. The tight end
- 28:40Speaker 2: would stay in for an extra second and you know
- 28:43Speaker 2: chip there, or the running back would chip on the
- 28:45Speaker 2: way out. It didn't always work obviously on the left
- 28:48Speaker 2: side with the strips at but they did kind of
- 28:50Speaker 2: the same with Campbell. I think they realized that their
- 28:53Speaker 2: offensive line is going to have some holes in pass
- 28:55Speaker 2: protection and they're not going to allow that to snowball
- 29:00Speaker 2: on them as much as maybe the staff did last year.
- 29:02Speaker 2: The staff last year just kind of called their plays
- 29:05Speaker 2: and expected the line to the execution in the line
- 29:07Speaker 2: to improve, Whereas I think Josh will say this is
- 29:11Speaker 2: a tough week for us in pass protection. You know,
- 29:14Speaker 2: maybe this week even with chubin Jalen, it's a good
- 29:16Speaker 2: front Zach Steeler with the Dolphins, like, We're not going
- 29:20Speaker 2: to just allow these guys to just isolate our players
- 29:23Speaker 2: and isolate our tackles and tee off. So I guess
- 29:26Speaker 2: this is more faith in McDaniels than it is in
- 29:28Speaker 2: the players necessarily that they'll be able to get people.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Both interesting.
- 29:32Speaker 1: So you have the run blocking in the pass blocking.
- 29:35Speaker 1: You think both were real in this game, Yes, I
- 29:38Speaker 1: think both were fake. I look, I was very encouraged
- 29:41Speaker 1: by what I saw from the offensive lines, better than
- 29:43Speaker 1: I expected. I'm not saying they're going to go back
- 29:45Speaker 1: to being the bottom the league. I think with Drake
- 29:47Speaker 1: may struggling under pressure at times in this game, you're
- 29:49Speaker 1: going to see him get blitzed more. I think that
- 29:51Speaker 1: numbers may be also a product of how many times
- 29:53Speaker 1: they throw. They threw the ball, So I said earlier,
- 29:55Speaker 1: I think is going to come down. Do they I
- 29:58Speaker 1: think they will be top twenty five. Can they maybe
- 30:00Speaker 1: sniff that top twenty shirt? Top half of the league
- 30:05Speaker 1: have about the top ten. Do you think they end
- 30:06Speaker 1: up top ten in pressure rate allowed? Top ten's high
- 30:10Speaker 1: so and the other thing.
- 30:11Speaker 2: But you have to really like to me, like pressure
- 30:13Speaker 2: rate is as much about the play calling as it
- 30:16Speaker 2: is the drop I get where you're coming from. So
- 30:18Speaker 2: I think that in that sense, they just are going
- 30:22Speaker 2: to do a better job of protecting the offensive line.
- 30:26Speaker 2: And they did it on Sunday because they've dropped back
- 30:27Speaker 2: fifty three times. Yeah, and so a lot of this too,
- 30:30Speaker 2: is just from my film study of the game, Like
- 30:33Speaker 2: it really didn't start the snowball on the rookies until
- 30:35Speaker 2: the fourth quarter. Well, this is their first time playing
- 30:38Speaker 2: four or fourth quarters in the NFL, and they're asking
- 30:40Speaker 2: him to drop back fifty three times. They're gonna make
- 30:44Speaker 2: some mistakes. It's not going to be perfect. So that's
- 30:47Speaker 2: a big part of it too. Like Jared Wilson ends
- 30:50Speaker 2: up giving you know, depending on who you believe in,
- 30:52Speaker 2: what metric you want to, you know, round four or
- 30:54Speaker 2: five pressures in this game. Three of them happened in
- 30:57Speaker 2: the fourth quarter, Yeah, when he started to get tired.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So I think a lot of that is part of
- 31:02Speaker 2: it too.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Right, So there you go, and the other thing for
- 31:05Speaker 1: me just saying that I think that's fake. There's an
- 31:06Speaker 1: injuries too, I think will factor in that. All right,
- 31:08Speaker 1: a couple more Kayshawn Booty. I just kind of wrote
- 31:12Speaker 1: Kashawn Booty's breakout if you want to characterize it. Six catches,
- 31:15Speaker 1: one hundred and three yards. What I like the most
- 31:17Speaker 1: from him? Five of his six catches went for first downs.
- 31:20Speaker 1: The other one was a yard short on second and fifteen,
- 31:22Speaker 1: which I think he broke the route off short to
- 31:24Speaker 1: create the throwing window, which I'm fine with that on
- 31:27Speaker 1: second down. Any team, you know, you should feel good
- 31:30Speaker 1: about converting a third and one if you can get
- 31:32Speaker 1: that chunk play on second down. So is this real?
- 31:36Speaker 1: Is Kayshawn Booty? And that doesn't mean he has to
- 31:37Speaker 1: get one hundred yards every game? But is this real
- 31:40Speaker 1: that Kashawn Booty is going to be like a go
- 31:42Speaker 1: to chain moving wide receiver? Like, are we gonna more
- 31:46Speaker 1: or less see what we saw out of him on
- 31:48Speaker 1: Sunday weekend and week out?
- 31:49Speaker 2: Do you think real or fake? I've been I've been
- 31:53Speaker 2: told that I'm a Kashn Booty hater. I have as well,
- 31:56Speaker 2: and I would say, first of all, a lot of
- 31:59Speaker 2: that stems from the fact of how this coaching staff
- 32:02Speaker 2: has made it look like they view Kaishan Boody going
- 32:05Speaker 2: back to the offseason when he was in all these
- 32:08Speaker 2: trade rumors and they didn't seem super interested in Kashan Boody,
- 32:12Speaker 2: so that it's a lot of it stems from that.
- 32:15Speaker 2: I would say, also, and this is not Kaishan Boody's fault,
- 32:18Speaker 2: but if Kaishan Boody is your best wide receiver, then
- 32:22Speaker 2: I'm concerned.
- 32:22Speaker 1: So we're not getting bigger picture with the pass game here.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I don't disagree with that.
- 32:25Speaker 2: But just so I think that that's what I'm just saying,
- 32:27Speaker 2: Like I think my takes on Kaishan Boody stem from
- 32:29Speaker 2: that because I'm thinking, to myself, Kaishan Boody is an
- 32:33Speaker 2: NFL player, Like, he's proven that he's a good He's
- 32:35Speaker 2: an NFL as receiver and it's probably a top three,
- 32:38Speaker 2: you know, starting receiver in this league. But if that's
- 32:42Speaker 2: the best you got, then that's not good.
- 32:44Speaker 1: But just in a bubble, and you're right, he's better
- 32:47Speaker 1: as a complimentary player, But in a bubble, was that
- 32:50Speaker 1: a pretty accurate representation of the player.
- 32:52Speaker 2: He's going to be this year one hundred yards a lot.
- 32:56Speaker 2: So I don't think he's going to get one hundred
- 32:57Speaker 2: yards every week. I think the way he ran routes,
- 32:59Speaker 2: and I thought, what was the best part about the
- 33:02Speaker 2: way he ran I thought he played with great play
- 33:04Speaker 2: strength yea at both at the top of the route
- 33:06Speaker 2: and at the catch point. I thought he played with
- 33:09Speaker 2: real sturdiness to his game, real willingness to go over
- 33:12Speaker 2: the middle of the field on some of those dig
- 33:14Speaker 2: routes where there were traffic and he could have taken
- 33:17Speaker 2: a lick. He actually did take a lick on one
- 33:18Speaker 2: of those. That was probably Drake's best throw of the game.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I think it's real in terms of what he put
- 33:25Speaker 2: on film. I don't know, he's not going to go
- 33:27Speaker 2: for six for one hundred every single So yeah, I
- 33:29Speaker 2: think it's real.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And part of the reason I think it's real is
- 33:32Speaker 1: a lot of the kinds of catches he was making
- 33:35Speaker 1: were the kind of catches he made in camp. That
- 33:37Speaker 1: was exactly what he was doing all of camp. You know,
- 33:41Speaker 1: comeback routes and in cuts in the intermediate to the field,
- 33:44Speaker 1: creating separation at top of the route. He gave Drake
- 33:46Speaker 1: made some easy windows to put the ball into. Is
- 33:48Speaker 1: going to have one hundred yards every week? Probably not.
- 33:50Speaker 1: I will be interested to see if the Dolphins. It
- 33:53Speaker 1: felt to me like the Raiders were more focused on
- 33:56Speaker 1: taking away one the over the top and then really
- 33:59Speaker 1: sick underneath on Trayvon Henderson and on Pop Douglas, and
- 34:04Speaker 1: they were giving the Patriots the middle of the field.
- 34:06Speaker 1: And so I'll be interesting if the Dolphins maybe take
- 34:09Speaker 1: another approach and focus more on him. But if the
- 34:12Speaker 1: production goes down, but the production goes down because he's
- 34:15Speaker 1: being focused on and now it's open more underneath for
- 34:17Speaker 1: Henderson in Pop Douglas, or you're bringing another safety down
- 34:20Speaker 1: and now you know somebody else Kyle Williams or whoever
- 34:23Speaker 1: can get over the top and get vertical like that's
- 34:26Speaker 1: still a real impact, even if the numbers are not there.
- 34:29Speaker 1: I'm not saying team, I'm not saying Kashan Boody is
- 34:31Speaker 1: a Tuesday Morning player. But you're going to game plan
- 34:33Speaker 1: around somebody. You don't just come in and played Vanilla
- 34:35Speaker 1: across the board. So I think it's real. I think
- 34:38Speaker 1: that that game from Kashan Budy is real. Again, the
- 34:40Speaker 1: numbers may fluctuate a little bit, but I think that
- 34:42Speaker 1: was real all right. Being blitz heavy. Patriots had one
- 34:47Speaker 1: of the highest blitz rate in the league. They converted
- 34:49Speaker 1: it on their blitzes. They turned blitzer into pressures in
- 34:52Speaker 1: the second highest rate in the league, although it's worth
- 34:54Speaker 1: noting there were fifty six percent. Only two teams that
- 34:59Speaker 1: were like in their above fifty percent blitz more than
- 35:02Speaker 1: ten times, and they were at sixteen, so that was
- 35:04Speaker 1: kind of higher.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Obviously mixed results.
- 35:08Speaker 1: But are the Patriots going to be one of the
- 35:10Speaker 1: heaviest blitzing teams in the NFL this year?
- 35:12Speaker 2: Real? Are fake? Real? I'm with you. I think they're
- 35:15Speaker 2: gonna blitz. They did not blitz a lot in Tennessee.
- 35:18Speaker 2: This staff with you know, Vrabel and Zach Kerr and
- 35:22Speaker 2: and Terrell Williams. But my guess is that didn't blitz
- 35:25Speaker 2: as much in Tennessee because they didn't have the man
- 35:27Speaker 2: corners that they have on this team. I think they
- 35:29Speaker 2: want to be an aggressive defense. I want I think
- 35:31Speaker 2: they want to make negative plays and they want to
- 35:34Speaker 2: take the football away on defense, and they're going to
- 35:38Speaker 2: live with some of the boom or bust that comes
- 35:42Speaker 2: with that. Nine explosives is too many, like they that
- 35:45Speaker 2: can't happen every single week. Yeah, but if they exchange
- 35:49Speaker 2: some haymakers like that's I think the way they want
- 35:51Speaker 2: to play. I don't think they want to be a
- 35:54Speaker 2: Matt Patricia special where they're sitting down in coverage and
- 35:58Speaker 2: they're forcing everything in front then don't break. Yeah, that's
- 36:01Speaker 2: afraid I'm looking for. I don't think they want to
- 36:03Speaker 2: do that.
- 36:04Speaker 1: With and look as for the results, I think they'll
- 36:06Speaker 1: be mixed. I think it will be a little bit
- 36:07Speaker 1: better once they get Gonzales back. But just in terms
- 36:10Speaker 1: of the approach, I think the blitz heaviness you saw
- 36:13Speaker 1: in that game was real. One more and this is
- 36:15Speaker 1: one that did not get talked about as much. But
- 36:17Speaker 1: the number is a little inflated because of the way
- 36:20Speaker 1: the game ended and you had the on side kick,
- 36:22Speaker 1: go out of bounds and some other stuff. But Patriots
- 36:25Speaker 1: are called for nine penalties in this game, nine accepted penalties.
- 36:29Speaker 1: They averaged six and a half per game last year.
- 36:33Speaker 1: You had some in big spots. We'll get to Will
- 36:35Speaker 1: Campbell like I thought, blocking wise, Will Campbell was fine.
- 36:38Speaker 1: The penalties can't happen, especially the false start late in
- 36:41Speaker 1: the game. You know, Jalen Hawkins took a bad unncessary
- 36:44Speaker 1: roughness penalty. Mike Vrabel talked about playing cleaner football, not
- 36:48Speaker 1: committing bad football. There are some avoidable penalties in there.
- 36:50Speaker 1: It's just the way it is. Nine penalties seventh most,
- 36:54Speaker 1: tied for the seventh most in the NFL. The Raiders also,
- 36:56Speaker 1: by the way, I got called for nine, so maybe
- 36:57Speaker 1: some of it was the crew. But again, things can
- 37:00Speaker 1: be weird in Week one. That's the way this goes,
- 37:03Speaker 1: real or fake. The Patriots will have a penalty problem
- 37:05Speaker 1: this year.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna go real, but I do think it will
- 37:10Speaker 2: level off by the end of the season. But I
- 37:13Speaker 2: think what you're seeing a lot with some of these
- 37:15Speaker 2: penalties is that you either have young players like Will Campbell,
- 37:18Speaker 2: who's a rookie. Jared Wilson also got called for a
- 37:21Speaker 2: hold young players or players that are now playing in
- 37:26Speaker 2: new schemes and new new systems and things like that.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I do think that that can take time to figure
- 37:33Speaker 2: that out. And when you're not one hundred percent sure
- 37:36Speaker 2: about where you're supposed to be and you're chasing, if
- 37:39Speaker 2: you're on defense, that's when the holding calls. Start. That's
- 37:42Speaker 2: when the past interference calls start. That's when maybe you know,
- 37:45Speaker 2: jumping off side because you don't have it timed up perfectly,
- 37:48Speaker 2: you know, starts. So I think there's gonna be some
- 37:51Speaker 2: sloppiness that they are going to have to work through
- 37:54Speaker 2: as a team, as a new team with a new staff,
- 37:56Speaker 2: with what twenty seven new players or something like that.
- 38:00Speaker 2: I think that that's gonna happen. But I do expect
- 38:02Speaker 2: around and like Bill used to say, like around Thanksgiving,
- 38:05Speaker 2: I expect that to clean up. So I'm exactly.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be real early and it tapers
- 38:10Speaker 1: off everything you just said. Young players, new players, all that. Like,
- 38:13Speaker 1: it's gonna take them a while to kind of settle in.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Can't have nine penalties every week. The only reason I
- 38:19Speaker 1: kind of lean fake. The Raiders got called for a
- 38:21Speaker 1: lot of penalties too. This crew is pretty ticky tack.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I do appreciate they got the calls in quick. Usually
- 38:26Speaker 1: the Ticki tech crews also take their sweet time. You know,
- 38:29Speaker 1: they all gathering. It was just the one guy going
- 38:31Speaker 1: to the other guy. Here's what I've got.
- 38:32Speaker 2: But I don't think it's gonna be nine every week.
- 38:37Speaker 1: I think the number will be a little high through
- 38:38Speaker 1: the first month, month and a half of the season
- 38:40Speaker 1: then come down. So I think this is real to
- 38:42Speaker 1: an extent. I don't think this was because I look,
- 38:44Speaker 1: there were some teams last year.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I forget who it was.
- 38:46Speaker 1: There's one team that got calls were like double digit
- 38:48Speaker 1: penalties in Week one last year and then was like
- 38:51Speaker 1: bottom five in the league in penalties all year. They
- 38:53Speaker 1: just got one crew in Week one that called a
- 38:55Speaker 1: lot of penalties, And so that's where you get into
- 38:58Speaker 1: that is this a trend er? Is it a week
- 38:59Speaker 1: one thing? So I'm going real on that as well.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That's really fair. I don't know if you have any
- 39:04Speaker 1: anything else you think was a good like storyline from
- 39:07Speaker 1: this game that you think is it a week one thing.
- 39:09Speaker 2: I think we pretty much unpacked the everything that I
- 39:13Speaker 2: wanted to get to.
- 39:13Speaker 1: I'm actually I'm going to throw one more in there,
- 39:15Speaker 1: and it's not really a realer fake. I just want
- 39:17Speaker 1: to clarify it. So I had some people ask me
- 39:20Speaker 1: about this in terms of Travon Henderson not getting the
- 39:22Speaker 1: ball enough. Travon Henderson led the team in touches he
- 39:25Speaker 1: got they called thirteen design runs.
- 39:27Speaker 2: He got five carries. I did not love the plan.
- 39:32Speaker 1: So the usage is different, Yeah, Travon Henderson, And I
- 39:35Speaker 1: know people think that we're like afraid of giving Travon
- 39:37Speaker 1: Henderson the ball.
- 39:37Speaker 2: That's not even what the stake is.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they gave Travon Henderson the ball enough proportionally for
- 39:41Speaker 1: what they called proportionally.
- 39:43Speaker 2: They didn't call it like again.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Five right, he got six catches. A lot of them
- 39:50Speaker 1: were either checked downs or screens that got blown up.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Swing swing passes into the flats and screens. As your
- 39:55Speaker 1: most explosive player on offense, it's just not it's not enough,
- 39:59Speaker 1: like they need to get him vertically down the field.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I think that.
- 40:05Speaker 1: The usage rate for Travon Henderson is real. The raw
- 40:11Speaker 1: number maybe doesn't reflect that as much, but that's due
- 40:15Speaker 1: to oddities in the play calling. That's not them. That's
- 40:18Speaker 1: not them like being afraid to give the ball to
- 40:19Speaker 1: Travon Henderson. Yeah, they just called it the game weird.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I just didn't love how they used him in this game.
- 40:25Speaker 2: I he is your biggest big play threat on offense.
- 40:29Speaker 2: He's the most explosive player that they have. And I
- 40:32Speaker 2: get it, like when you fas a team that's playing
- 40:35Speaker 2: a ton of zone like the Vegas was, and Next
- 40:38Speaker 2: Gen had them with one snap of man to man
- 40:40Speaker 2: the entire game. I thought I saw a couple more
- 40:42Speaker 2: than just one. I think PFF was closer to like
- 40:45Speaker 2: four or five. But whatever the case may be. You
- 40:47Speaker 2: drop back to pass fifty three times and they only
- 40:49Speaker 2: play five snaps in Manta Man. That's a heavy zone plan,
- 40:53Speaker 2: but that's as heavy as it gets. Well, and when
- 40:55Speaker 2: he play zone coverage, you know you're not gonna get
- 40:59Speaker 2: the matchup of like Travon Henderson on a linebacker on
- 41:02Speaker 2: a wheel route, Like, that's not gonna be as favorable
- 41:05Speaker 2: of a matchup as maybe you would if a team
- 41:07Speaker 2: is playing man to man against you. So I get that,
- 41:10Speaker 2: but you are faced he is the most explosive player
- 41:13Speaker 2: that you have. Can I get one wheel route?
- 41:16Speaker 1: Like?
- 41:16Speaker 2: Can I get one thing down the field with Travon Henderson?
- 41:21Speaker 2: They need to do that, like at once or twice
- 41:23Speaker 2: a game. He needs to be sent vertical to try
- 41:26Speaker 2: to hit him down the field on a big play.
- 41:28Speaker 2: It just has to be a big part of their arsenal.
- 41:30Speaker 2: So I expect that to be something that they'll get to,
- 41:33Speaker 2: Like I don't have any concerns that Josh McDaniels is
- 41:36Speaker 2: gonna only throw you know, check downs and screens at
- 41:40Speaker 2: Travon Henderson all season long. I'm sure that they'll have
- 41:42Speaker 2: some vertical stuff in there for him. All right, I
- 41:45Speaker 2: want to get to three up, three down, then we're
- 41:47Speaker 2: gonna open the show up. Brent Work where makes work

- 42:14Speaker 2: It was really nice of them. They sent us all
- 42:16Speaker 2: a box of goodies. They sent me a you know,
- 42:19Speaker 2: I'm a big quarter zip guy. They sent me a
- 42:21Speaker 2: quarter zip that I absolutely love. It's a great quarter zip.
- 42:25Speaker 2: I highly recommend it. Let's do three up, three down,
- 42:28Speaker 2: and I think we can officially close the chapter on
- 42:31Speaker 2: the Raiders game, thankfully, and move on. We're gonna talk
- 42:35Speaker 2: about some goods here too, because I know I feel
- 42:37Speaker 2: like I'm overly negative to start the show, so you
- 42:41Speaker 2: go first, because I think we might have a similar upslist,
- 42:44Speaker 2: So number one up.
- 42:46Speaker 1: So we just talked a lot about him and why
- 42:48Speaker 1: I think he was good, so we don't need to
- 42:49Speaker 1: do a ton of Kishawan booty like left off in
- 42:52Speaker 1: camp and being a chain mover and getting them. Is
- 42:55Speaker 1: the term chunk plays? So not not an explosive play,
- 42:58Speaker 1: not a twenty five plus yard play, but you know
- 43:00Speaker 1: ten to twenty five is that a chunk play?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Or am I using that term wrong? Well, I don't know.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I feel like explosives are twenty plus and most of
- 43:08Speaker 2: the time I hear chunk play, I hear explosive.
- 43:12Speaker 1: So what's the term for, Like, here's for Kaishan Boody,
- 43:14Speaker 1: here's where I think he was so useful. When the
- 43:17Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels offense is going, yes, and when the Patriots
- 43:20Speaker 1: and different offense have been going the last few years,
- 43:22Speaker 1: they've got, you know, as their quarterbacks have struggled, And
- 43:25Speaker 1: I need to look this up.
- 43:26Speaker 2: I haven't looked it up.
- 43:27Speaker 1: What percentage of their first downs do you think they've
- 43:29Speaker 1: picked up on third down? It's got to be pretty high, right, yes,
- 43:33Speaker 1: versus Kaishan Boody gets you first down on second and
- 43:37Speaker 1: eight gets you a first down on first and ten.
- 43:40Speaker 1: That sort of thing where maybe he's not running all
- 43:42Speaker 1: the way down the field of the end zone, but
- 43:44Speaker 1: you're not you know, three yards four yards, three yards,
- 43:47Speaker 1: first down, four yards, three arts, four yards, first down,
- 43:49Speaker 1: five yards, three arts, three yards, first down, Right, that
- 43:51Speaker 1: sort of thing he's giving you. He's moving the change
- 43:55Speaker 1: with a little more urgency. They haven't had an X
- 43:57Speaker 1: receiver that could do that in a little bit maybe
- 43:59Speaker 1: since Lafelle, and I just think him doing that. You
- 44:03Speaker 1: saw it early when the offense was moving and when
- 44:04Speaker 1: they were playing well, it's it's a real spark, and
- 44:07Speaker 1: I don't I don't love that they got a way
- 44:09Speaker 1: from it in the second half. I don't think the
- 44:10Speaker 1: Raiders coverage changed a ton, but I thought if they
- 44:14Speaker 1: can get more of that out of him, that would
- 44:16Speaker 1: be a huge development.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, he was great. He was my number two, but
- 44:19Speaker 2: he up but on my ups for sure. You know,
- 44:21Speaker 2: six for one oh three on eight targets. I thought
- 44:24Speaker 2: he played with great play strengths, ran really strong, steady routes.
- 44:28Speaker 2: I think what you saw out of him too is
- 44:30Speaker 2: something that just in general, just talking about the whole game,
- 44:34Speaker 2: I still think that it's a work in progress in
- 44:38Speaker 2: terms of Drake's confidence throwing to certain receivers in this offense.
- 44:41Speaker 2: And he has a lot of confidence throwing the ball
- 44:43Speaker 2: to Kseh on Booty, and I don't think that it's
- 44:45Speaker 2: a mistake or I don't think it's a coincidence. Yeah,
- 44:49Speaker 2: about Booty's body type, Like Booty is a sturdy, thicker,
- 44:53Speaker 2: bill like six foot receiver with good ball skills, decent
- 44:57Speaker 2: catch radius like, I think that those are the types receivers.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Just talking about big picture, and I know this isn't
- 45:03Speaker 2: draft time yet, but when we start to get into
- 45:05Speaker 2: all this stuff in the offseason, I think there's a
- 45:08Speaker 2: certain type of receiver they need to start targeting for
- 45:10Speaker 2: Drake may Well. And Josh Downs wasn't a big guy,
- 45:13Speaker 2: I know, but Josh Downs is It's different. It's just different.
- 45:16Speaker 2: The windows are different, the coverage is different. I think
- 45:20Speaker 2: Drake may needs guys with bigger catch radiuses. This is
- 45:24Speaker 2: my on working theory on this whole thing. I think
- 45:28Speaker 2: it would really help, of course with the accuracy, right,
- 45:31Speaker 2: Like you don't have to be pinpoint accurate when you're
- 45:33Speaker 2: throwing to a guy that has good a good catch radius.
- 45:36Speaker 2: But I think he has a lot of trust in
- 45:38Speaker 2: throwing the ball to of Keisha on booty and it
- 45:40Speaker 2: showed on Sunday, so that that was a really good
- 45:42Speaker 2: positive development. Who's number two Harold Landry? YEPF.
- 45:48Speaker 1: So everything I said about Kishan Boody like, Harold Landry's
- 45:51Speaker 1: kind of that player on defense for me, I don't
- 45:53Speaker 1: He's not gonna get two and a half sacks a game.
- 45:56Speaker 1: But you see the Raiders game looked like it was
- 46:00Speaker 1: more focused on Christian Barmore and Christian Barmoer was the
- 46:02Speaker 1: guy they were going to take away, So that left
- 46:05Speaker 1: Harold Landry won on one he teed off good, you
- 46:07Speaker 1: want that guy teen off this week?
- 46:09Speaker 2: Does Miami shift that focus and do they put focus.
- 46:11Speaker 1: More on Landry? And you know, then you look at
- 46:13Speaker 1: Barmore and does he do more? And you know, I'll
- 46:16Speaker 1: just kind of love them together. My other up was
- 46:18Speaker 1: Milton Williams me too, and I just thought the two
- 46:19Speaker 1: of those guys had a ton of success rushing off
- 46:21Speaker 1: each other and it'll be interesting to see if the
- 46:24Speaker 1: blocking approach changes. But they left Harold Landry one on
- 46:26Speaker 1: one and he made him pay. And that's what you
- 46:29Speaker 1: want from a guy like that. We know he's not
- 46:31Speaker 1: a Matthew Judon kind of player who's going to win
- 46:33Speaker 1: even when the attention is on him. But the attention
- 46:36Speaker 1: wasn't on him, and he took advantage of it and
- 46:39Speaker 1: he impacted the game. Had they won, he's probably, you know,
- 46:43Speaker 1: the MVP of the game for them.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so number one up for me was Harold Landry.
- 46:47Speaker 2: I had him with eight quarterback pressures, three sacks, two
- 46:50Speaker 2: run stuffs. I just had a monster game. He just
- 46:53Speaker 2: had a monster game. And I think the biggest thing
- 46:55Speaker 2: with Landry that makes me really excited is that that
- 46:58Speaker 2: looked like the Rabel Titans Harold Landry and not the
- 47:01Speaker 2: guy that played for the Titans last year, which makes
- 47:04Speaker 2: you think about, you know, scheme fit and all that
- 47:06Speaker 2: kind of stuff that we have discussed with Harold Landry
- 47:08Speaker 2: here a little bit of was last year a sign
- 47:12Speaker 2: that he was starting to slow down? Or was last
- 47:14Speaker 2: year because he switched schemes, switched coaching staffs, and he
- 47:17Speaker 2: wasn't a fit for the defense that they were running
- 47:20Speaker 2: in Tennessee. As much as he's a fit in this defense,
- 47:22Speaker 2: his comfort level, his execution on stunts and games up front,
- 47:28Speaker 2: just it shows like he's just very comfortable in this scheme.
- 47:31Speaker 2: He plays it very very well. And he was highly
- 47:34Speaker 2: disruptive in this game. And I thought, you know, just
- 47:37Speaker 2: looking at him and Milton Williams working together on some
- 47:40Speaker 2: of those stunts, I had Milton Williams with four pressures
- 47:43Speaker 2: in a run stuff. He was also very disruptive in
- 47:46Speaker 2: this game. Williams was awesome in this game.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Yea.
- 47:49Speaker 2: He was exactly as advertised. His win rates are like
- 47:53Speaker 2: all off the charts with all the different metrics, if
- 47:55Speaker 2: you want to go fancy and look at all those things,
- 47:58Speaker 2: I think he's like top five in the league in
- 48:00Speaker 2: Week one and pass rush win weight, disruptive, first into
- 48:04Speaker 2: the gaps, quick to the edges. Had a couple of
- 48:07Speaker 2: pass rush moves in this one bull rush rip move
- 48:10Speaker 2: effective on the stunts held up in the run game,
- 48:13Speaker 2: which I know is a little bit of a concern
- 48:14Speaker 2: for people whether or not he was going to be
- 48:16Speaker 2: able to be a three down player at least week one.
- 48:20Speaker 2: So far, so good on that. So if you come
- 48:23Speaker 2: out of this game, and I know there was a
- 48:25Speaker 2: lot of negatives that we broke down in the first
- 48:27Speaker 2: forty five minutes here, and Harold Landry and Milton Williams
- 48:31Speaker 2: both made their their paycheck on Sunday, that's really really
- 48:35Speaker 2: good for that free agency class. Now, not everybody was
- 48:38Speaker 2: great from the free agency class, but that specifically was
- 48:42Speaker 2: very good to see. You paid those guys a lot
- 48:44Speaker 2: of money in the offseason and week one they delivered.
- 48:47Speaker 2: That's good news for them. All Right, let's go to
- 48:50Speaker 2: the downs. Number one, Drake May.
- 48:53Speaker 1: I just thought again I said it earlier. I can
- 48:56Speaker 1: find the stat here.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I have it. I actually really liked we the first half.
- 49:01Speaker 1: I think if what you get out of Drake May
- 49:04Speaker 1: is more or less what he was in the first
- 49:05Speaker 1: half of that game, like like we're cooking, Like that's
- 49:09Speaker 1: a that's not a bad spot to be. The problem
- 49:11Speaker 1: is so here the numbers pre interception, I mean, use
- 49:14Speaker 1: some dinosaur numbers here, so try not to get too
- 49:16Speaker 1: out at me. Eighteen to twenty five, seventy two percent
- 49:19Speaker 1: completion percentage, one hundred eight two yards seven three point
- 49:22Speaker 1: yards per attempt and the touchdown and that. So that's
- 49:25Speaker 1: the first half and that second drive up to the
- 49:28Speaker 1: interception where he actually made some nice throws on that
- 49:31Speaker 1: first drive of the second half before he got picked off.
- 49:33Speaker 1: After the interception, seven for twelve, so fifty eight percent
- 49:38Speaker 1: fifty one yards. So his completion percentage drops by fifteen points,
- 49:43Speaker 1: his yards per attempt drops by three yards per attempt,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and you just look like, visibly, he just is approaching
- 49:49Speaker 1: the game differently mentally. It looks like after the interception
- 49:53Speaker 1: that was disappointing to me, Like you want him to
- 49:55Speaker 1: have a little more that gunslinger mentality. Obviously you don't
- 49:57Speaker 1: want him to make mistakes, but the mistakes are gonna come.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Can he bounce back from him and continue to make
- 50:02Speaker 1: plays again? I thought he had a really good feel
- 50:04Speaker 1: off of it in that first half. The Raiders made
- 50:06Speaker 1: some adjustments, but I didn't think it was anything that
- 50:08Speaker 1: should have been too you know, restrictive on him. I
- 50:11Speaker 1: think he just he got in his head, McDaniel's got
- 50:13Speaker 1: in his head whoever, and and that that was kind
- 50:16Speaker 1: of disappointed me. That the interception threw it, threw him
- 50:18Speaker 1: off and threw the offense off as a whole. That's
- 50:20Speaker 1: the other number, the as a team first downs twelve
- 50:26Speaker 1: as a team in the first six drives before the
- 50:28Speaker 1: interception between the and that's not sorry, that's not the
- 50:31Speaker 1: interception at the end of the game. It's the interception
- 50:34Speaker 1: until that two minute drill where the Raiders were in
- 50:36Speaker 1: preventing to include that twelve first downs in the first
- 50:41Speaker 1: six drives for the Patriots the ensuing four drives before
- 50:43Speaker 1: the game really got out of hand, two total first downs.
- 50:46Speaker 2: And four drives.
- 50:47Speaker 1: So it just the the interception changed everything.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah, So I you're trying to find the fancy math.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Now I already have it, but it's not directly from
- 50:58Speaker 2: the interception. But the interception happened early in the second half,
- 51:01Speaker 2: so I have first half, second half.
- 51:02Speaker 1: So I actually thought even that drive up until the interception,
- 51:05Speaker 1: he was okay, so I wanted to give him credit
- 51:07Speaker 1: for that.
- 51:07Speaker 2: So that way plus point twenty six expecting points added
- 51:11Speaker 2: in the first half per drop back, which is good,
- 51:14Speaker 2: minus point three in the second half. So that he
- 51:19Speaker 2: fell off in the second half, there's no other way
- 51:21Speaker 2: to put it. Ten for seventeen for eighty three yards
- 51:24Speaker 2: until that last drive that you. I can't. I wouldn't
- 51:27Speaker 2: say it's truly garbage time, but pseudo garbage. I don't
- 51:30Speaker 2: want to call it garbage time, but it's the defense
- 51:33Speaker 2: like it's not. So he was ten for seventeen for
- 51:36Speaker 2: eighty three yards on those first five possisions of the
- 51:38Speaker 2: second half that went interception, punt, punt, punt, punt right.
- 51:42Speaker 2: So on top of that, I wanted to talk a
- 51:44Speaker 2: little bit about because we talked about this yesterday on
- 51:48Speaker 2: PU and Bred and I kind of got into a
- 51:50Speaker 2: disagreement about it, and I'm curious about your take on this.
- 51:53Speaker 2: So I rode something after the game on Sunday about
- 51:59Speaker 2: Drake May's fit in this Josh McDaniel's offense, and it
- 52:06Speaker 2: got screenshot and it's gone around a little bit, so
- 52:08Speaker 2: I want to talk about it. The biggest thing that
- 52:10Speaker 2: I see with Drake May in this offense is that
- 52:15Speaker 2: I have What I worry about is if Drake May
- 52:17Speaker 2: is going to be able to be consistently accurate enough
- 52:20Speaker 2: in the short stuff, in the short game to really
- 52:24Speaker 2: run an offense that is predicated on picking up that
- 52:28Speaker 2: at first down, throwing the ball underneath, taking profits and
- 52:33Speaker 2: playing that kind of football, and for some reason, I
- 52:37Speaker 2: feel like that gets misconstrued and like people think that
- 52:41Speaker 2: that's easy to do, Like, oh, every quarterback should be
- 52:44Speaker 2: able to throw at ten yards. That's a skill, Like
- 52:47Speaker 2: that's a that's a talent, that's an ability that you know,
- 52:51Speaker 2: obviously Brady had it at a level that's beyond probably
- 52:54Speaker 2: anybody else that's ever played in the game. But I'm
- 52:58Speaker 2: going to cross sports here for a second and don't
- 53:00Speaker 2: make any Joe Mizula jokes because I know that's coming.
- 53:03Speaker 2: But like it would be a little bit like in
- 53:05Speaker 2: basketball if we said, I know, you can only shoot
- 53:08Speaker 2: twenty five percent from three, but we're a three point
- 53:12Speaker 2: shooting team, so we're just gonna have your shoot threes. Anyways,
- 53:15Speaker 2: all right, I won't say anything. I won't say anything.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Well this Allics don't have a lot of twenty five
- 53:19Speaker 2: percent three point shooters, so you can't not over the
- 53:22Speaker 2: course of the season.
- 53:22Speaker 1: They have guys that get in slumps in that. All right, Anyway,
- 53:24Speaker 1: do you.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Understand what I'm saying. I get what you're saying, or
- 53:26Speaker 2: it's a good I'll use another basketball analogy because I
- 53:29Speaker 2: knew that one was going to get you.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know why the hell you would be
- 53:32Speaker 1: a good idea.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Everybody just there's certain guys, especially big guys in the
- 53:37Speaker 2: NBA that can't shoot free throws right, And everybody is like,
- 53:41Speaker 2: you're in the NBA, You're a professional basketball player. How
- 53:43Speaker 2: can you not make at least the majority of your
- 53:46Speaker 2: free throws? Some guys just can't. Like they can practice
- 53:50Speaker 2: it all night long, they can practice it all day long,
- 53:53Speaker 2: they can be in the gym, they can do all
- 53:55Speaker 2: those things, and some guys just can't hit free throws.
- 53:57Speaker 2: It's just the thing. So I would say this same
- 54:00Speaker 2: thing is true for quarterbacks. Quarterbacks have different strengths and weaknesses.
- 54:05Speaker 2: Some guys can dice up defenses underneath and they can
- 54:08Speaker 2: take those profits, and they can just go right down
- 54:10Speaker 2: the field and they can be consistent with their accuracy
- 54:13Speaker 2: to matriculate the ball down the field on longer drives.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Some guys, and I think Drake may is in this bucket,
- 54:19Speaker 2: are better throwing the ball down the field intermediate and deep,
- 54:23Speaker 2: and they aren't as good in the short game. So
- 54:25Speaker 2: in this game, in the short game, Drake may was
- 54:27Speaker 2: seven to thirteen on throws under ten yards. In this game,
- 54:30Speaker 2: that's fifty three percent, almost fifty four to fifty three
- 54:33Speaker 2: point eight. The league averaged since I started twenty twenty
- 54:36Speaker 2: four on those throws is seventy six percent.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Yeah, no, because he sailed some of them. Look, I
- 54:42Speaker 1: think it goes beyond the fit in the offense.
- 54:45Speaker 2: For me.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Whatever offense you're in, these boom or bust quarterbacks, the
- 54:51Speaker 1: book on every single one of them is going to
- 54:54Speaker 1: be when they come in the NFL is going to
- 54:55Speaker 1: be take away the deep stuff and force him to
- 54:58Speaker 1: be patient and the ball down and take what's underneath
- 55:02Speaker 1: and just wait and see if he gets impatient, makeshim
- 55:04Speaker 1: say that was a book on Josh Allen for four years,
- 55:06Speaker 1: right until he proved he could do that that one
- 55:08Speaker 1: game here.
- 55:09Speaker 2: And so whatever offense Drake.
- 55:11Speaker 1: May was in, he was gonna have He's gonna have
- 55:13Speaker 1: to hit those throws at some point because yes, he
- 55:17Speaker 1: wants to throw the ball deep. The other team knows
- 55:18Speaker 1: he wants to throw deep. They're gonna take that away.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Regardless of the system. They're gonna take the deep ball
- 55:23Speaker 1: away from Drake May until he proves he can Nicklin
- 55:26Speaker 1: dime and dink is dunk, dink and dunk is way
- 55:28Speaker 1: down the field. And then once you can do that, well,
- 55:31Speaker 1: now teams are gonna start creeping up and now you
- 55:32Speaker 1: can hit that deep ball behind him. They did it
- 55:34Speaker 1: to Alan, they did it to Mahomes, They've done it
- 55:37Speaker 1: to other quarterbacks who never proved they could do the
- 55:39Speaker 1: dink and dunk thing. And we're just big armed quarterbacks
- 55:41Speaker 1: and that's all they were. So not to dodge the question,
- 55:45Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think the system is what matters.
- 55:48Speaker 1: I don't necessarily I hear it, I think it.
- 55:50Speaker 2: But if you're playing, like if you're playing a team,
- 55:52Speaker 2: and this is another thing that like I wish I
- 55:55Speaker 2: had sort of had more space in that right up
- 55:58Speaker 2: to talk about this. They're playing a team that is
- 56:01Speaker 2: playing a lot of zone and they're playing you know what,
- 56:04Speaker 2: because this is going to happen now like Vegas. Yeah,
- 56:06Speaker 2: just put a blueprint out there for the rest of
- 56:08Speaker 2: the NFL to your point, until he proves that he
- 56:11Speaker 2: can just dink and dunk and take these profits. Not
- 56:14Speaker 2: only does it limit the downfield throw ability if you
- 56:17Speaker 2: play these zone coverages, it also limits his mobility because
- 56:21Speaker 2: now you have eleven guys that have all their eyes
- 56:24Speaker 2: on the quarterback. When you play scrambling quarterbacks, and I
- 56:28Speaker 2: think this book is out from his rookie season, everybody
- 56:30Speaker 2: knows that Drake may is a really good scrambler and
- 56:33Speaker 2: a dynamic scrambler. So if you play man coverage, then
- 56:36Speaker 2: you turn your back to the quarterback down the field
- 56:39Speaker 2: and he's just going to take off running. And I
- 56:40Speaker 2: think everybody knows that now. So if you play these
- 56:43Speaker 2: teams that play cover two and cover three defense or quarters,
- 56:46Speaker 2: and they're trying to keep everything in front of them,
- 56:48Speaker 2: but also they're trying to limit him and put him
- 56:52Speaker 2: in the pocket. Basically they're asking him to sit in
- 56:54Speaker 2: the pocket and pick apart zone coverage and make consistent,
- 56:58Speaker 2: accurate throws. It's the right way to approach it. That's
- 57:01Speaker 2: that's the knock on him, Like that's the right that's
- 57:03Speaker 2: the right game plan. So from a play calling perspective
- 57:08Speaker 2: with McDaniels, just because they're sitting in two high and
- 57:11Speaker 2: three high zone doesn't mean you can't push the ball
- 57:13Speaker 2: down the field. You just need to time up your
- 57:16Speaker 2: zone beaters and get routes to flood the zones down
- 57:19Speaker 2: the field like they did do this in this game.
- 57:22Speaker 2: A couple of times and they hit Hunter Henry on
- 57:24Speaker 2: a post wheel. But Cover three post wheel right, you run,
- 57:27Speaker 2: you run off the defender, you run the wheel route
- 57:30Speaker 2: right into the boundary, into the sideline. You flood the zone.
- 57:34Speaker 2: You know, they played Tampa two, they played Cover two.
- 57:36Speaker 2: You have the hole shots on the sideline that he's
- 57:39Speaker 2: great at throwing, by the way, like corner shots into
- 57:42Speaker 2: the holes in the Cover two. Or you can split
- 57:44Speaker 2: the safety up top, you know, run the seam and
- 57:47Speaker 2: split the safeties. Like, there's ways to throw the football
- 57:50Speaker 2: down the field against these zone coverages. And if you
- 57:53Speaker 2: start doing that, then those windows underneath don't become as tight,
- 57:59Speaker 2: right because now they have to back off, and now
- 58:01Speaker 2: they have to you know, respect the deep ball. So they,
- 58:04Speaker 2: in my opinion, they just need to be more vertical
- 58:07Speaker 2: with how they're attacking things. And maybe that's not for
- 58:09Speaker 2: a full game, Like maybe it's just a little bit,
- 58:11Speaker 2: just enough to keep them honest, right, and then they
- 58:14Speaker 2: go to something else. We should move off, Drake though
- 58:16Speaker 2: we've talked enough about this. Who's your number two down here?
- 58:20Speaker 4: Uh?
- 58:20Speaker 1: Calev On Chase on Yeah, just you know, kind of
- 58:23Speaker 1: the opposite of booty.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Booty had a.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Strong summer and everything you saw the summer from him,
- 58:28Speaker 1: continued Caleb on, chase On kind of got a race
- 58:30Speaker 1: in this game. Now he's going up against Colton Miller,
- 58:31Speaker 1: who's a pretty good player. But I was hoping to
- 58:34Speaker 1: see a little more from him. I think there were
- 58:37Speaker 1: times where and on some of those blitzes in particular,
- 58:39Speaker 1: where we talked about they didn't get home. Landry and
- 58:42Speaker 1: Milton Williams collapse their side of the line, Barmore's getting doubled,
- 58:46Speaker 1: but chase On couldn't complete collapsing the pocket and it
- 58:50Speaker 1: allowed you know, Smith to have a little more time,
- 58:52Speaker 1: a little more room to move.
- 58:53Speaker 2: And maneuver and find windows.
- 58:55Speaker 1: So I was hoping we get we get a little
- 58:58Speaker 1: more from him, or honestly Keon White, who's held him
- 59:00Speaker 1: at times and also didn't do much.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I just thought we'd see more from them
- 59:04Speaker 2: in this game, especially chase On, like Yins's former team,
- 59:06Speaker 2: I thought we might see a little more from him. Yeah,
- 59:08Speaker 2: I wonder what Chase On And this is just a theory,
- 59:10Speaker 2: I because I didn't really notice him much on the
- 59:13Speaker 2: on the review either. I thought he was pretty quiet
- 59:15Speaker 2: in this game. I do wonder how much of that though,
- 59:18Speaker 2: was like him maybe being the guy that was supposed
- 59:20Speaker 2: to keep Gino in the pocket and maybe Milton Williams
- 59:24Speaker 2: and Landry let those guys go eat. Now most of
- 59:27Speaker 2: the time you think of that as armside rusher, which
- 59:29Speaker 2: would have been Harold Landry. So to have the backside
- 59:32Speaker 2: rusher be the one that is more like push the pocket,
- 59:37Speaker 2: you know.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Zero hour and then see where Gino likes to flip
- 59:39Speaker 1: the shoulders and run.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Maybe maybe maybe that was like just to maybe come
- 59:45Speaker 2: up with a little bit of an excuse as to
- 59:47Speaker 2: why calevon chase On was quiet in this game. My
- 59:50Speaker 2: number two down was Christian Ellish gave up sixty nine
- 59:54Speaker 2: yards and coverage six for sixty nine six for six
- 59:57Speaker 2: for sixty nine yards. Three mistackles in this game as well,
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: the role out played a Gino threw the ball back
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: into the middle of the field. Even though the Dante
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Thornton play was kind of the one that gets highlighted,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: I thought that was really a big backbreaker in this
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: game as well. I just think that they need better
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: from bolter linebackers. I thought Splain was good in the
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: pass rush in this game, but I didn't think he
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: was particularly great in coverage or in space either. They
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: just need both those guys to play better in Christian Ellis,
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I do wonder, you know, we talk a lot about
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: these holdovers, like Jabiel Peppers is no longer here, Anthony
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Jennings was inactive healthy scratch on Sunday in this game,
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Kyle Dugger doesn't really have much of a role played
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: on this team now with Christian Ellis. I think he's
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: a really good special teams player. He's a really good
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: third linebacker if you want to play him in that role.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I'm not quite sold on him as a starting week
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: side linebacker. And I wonder at what point, if this
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: continues with Elis, do they give Marte Maphu a chance
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: to play that spot. So he was number two for me?
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Who's uh, you're on three?
- 1:01:03Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Number three?
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: I actually had four? Okay, good Jared Wilson just ye
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: didn't I know?
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: It kind of got worse late, but I didn't get
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: much of a push in the run game, got beat
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: up a little bit in the pass gamaged rough first
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: game for the rookie.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Yep, that's fair. How much more to that, Jalen Hawkins?
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: So I have jail.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I wanted it because you know, I have to be
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: weird about it. I had Jalen Hawkins in his own category.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: So Jalen Hawkins was a hard one to put on
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: this list. Jalen Hawkins could have been on both. He
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: had a pick that was really Carlon Davis's play, but
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: he made but he made me the play Johnny on
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: the spot, I made to play. And he had a
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: sack that was really good.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: A couple of the run stops at CFL again help
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: with the line of scrimmage, which is not what you
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: expect from him.
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: He also gave up a twenty six yard touchdown, and
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: he gave up a thirty eight yard slant to two Bowers.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: The Slayer. I want to talk about though, because I
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: I this is I was like weary of putting Jalen
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: Hawkins on the downs the main and why is I like,
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: why is Jalen Hawkins covering brought Bowers on a slant
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: with no help? Like I just I don't think that's
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: a great call. I don't think that's a great call.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: They need to figure out how they're gonna cover tight
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: ends because I don't know if Woodson or Hawkins is
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: really their answer for doing that. Maybe when Christian Gonzalez
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: gets back. I'm hoping when Christian gets all Gonzales gets
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: back Alex Austin that becomes his role is when you're
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: facing a Bowers level tight end, like a guy that's
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: that good, you put Alex Austin a better cover corner
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: on him. Other than the safeties. I thought the safeties
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: not so much Woodson, but Hawkins Pettis was on him
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: and Bowers dropped it. But he had all sorts of
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: space on a little shallow cross and beat del Pettis
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: too much of the safeties in manton Man coverage in
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: this game, for my liking, I thought they were leaving
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: them out there to dry a little bit. So I
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: had a tough time with Hawkins being on here. But
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: two really big plays in this game. I think you
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: could have put him on ups and down. Yeah, like
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: it was. He had some very high highs and some
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: very low low's. It was a weird game. It was
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: an involved game for Jalen Hawkins. Yes, it was your
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: last one special teams. Oh yeah, I knew you were
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: gonna yeh. He had a missed field goal.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Bryce Bearinger shanks a punt at the worst possible time,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: and we didn't even really get into the punt decision,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: whether or not you think it was right or wrong
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: to punt there. I think we can all agree a
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: shank is not good. Yeah, So just you know, Borgolis
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: hit a couple more field goals after that, so it
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: wasn't terrible. Antonio Gibson a big kick return, they wasted it.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: It went three and out, So it wasn't all terrible,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: But the mistakes came in big spots, which is why
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I felt like I should put them on the list.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: It was even I and you know, I'm not a
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: special teams guy per se, and I kind of let
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: that that's sort of your lane that I let you have.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: The Mike Rabel calling out the twenty one yard punt. Yeah,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: in the post game that was interesting, Like he doesn't
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: normally just like single out specific guys for bad plays
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: like that, and you went right at it. Didn't Bill
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: do that once? Yeah?
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I remember Bill doing that once and we were like, wow,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: we called out the punter.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Twenty one yard punt not in a spot where they
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: needed to flip the field was not good. It's a
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: couple of penalties on special teams too. I thought they
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: didn't really create a ton of room in the returns either,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: which I thought was going to be you know, Gibson
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: had that one, the forty one yarder to start, which
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: I thought was like, all right, well, this is what
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: we saw in the preseason, like this is going to
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: be a weapon for them. Didn't really get much else
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: out of it, and then the missfield goal. It was
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: it was not a good first first outing for special
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: teams on a team that kind of needs to win.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Yeah, the markets like they need to win on the
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: on the margins.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: All right, So that's the the Raiders recap producer Alex.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Do we do we have to go to break here?
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Do we have to do a commercial breaker? H No,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: I cannot hear you. You can hear me, maybe possibly, No,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: we don't need to do one. Okay, all right, let's
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: get to the calls and emails. I know you guys
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: have been waiting for a long time. Here Sean is
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: Hello, guys, how you guys doing good? I want to
- 1:05:09Speaker 6: touch on some of the things that uh like I
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: would like to say, like some of the things you
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: guys are saying like overrated when it comes like they're pressure,
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: because I feel like radically they got pressure, but they won't.
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: They weren't consistent all games. That reason why Diino was
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: very very comfortable back there when they delivered thros because
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: I don't believe that the press was all that consistent.
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: And then also when you look at the offense, because
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: it may not be able to live with the ball
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: with accuracy is the reason why the offense is suffered.
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: So because you guys to make those throws with and
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: seen the numbers, then teams are going to play him
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: like the way they're gonna play him. You're gonna take
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: away the deep ball. And so if you can't show
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: the guy at least have of respectable past the game,
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: the run is not going to work. So just you
- 1:05:49Speaker 6: gotta get something for teams to respect and so that
- 1:05:51Speaker 6: pass the game shows up, it's never going to work.
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: That's all I have to say.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: Yeah, No, those are two good points. I think we
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: both kind of brought those points up that the blitzing
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: worked and then it didn't. You know, it was very inconsistent.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: It was very boom robust, which in some respects tends
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: to be the way it is when you blitz a lot,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: like you're not always going to get home. And then yeah,
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: I think if you had to put the blame pie
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: of the offense, I thought there were open receivers. I
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: thought there was decent pass protection at time in this game.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: I think Drake was probably the biggest reason why they
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: struggled in the second half in this game, which is
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: is what it is.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: So again, what I thought was interesting about the blitz Like, again,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: you look at just where they ranked in the league,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: the percentage of where they got home was relatively high.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Is I think fifty eight percent of their blitzes turned
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: into pressure, not sacks, but pressure, which was top ten
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: in the league. But if you they blitzed sixteen times.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: If you look at all the other teams that were
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: in the top ten one blitz, I remember the exact teams.
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: I don't listened front of me.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: One blitz eleven, one blitz ten. Nobody else b blitz
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: more than double digits. So, like, fifty eight percent is
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: a good hit rate for a blitz, but it gets
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: to the point where the volume starts to matter. Because
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I'm just gonna use round numbers to make it easy
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Let's say you blitz eight times and you get home
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: on half. That's four potential big plays you're giving up.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Not great, but you can live. You should be able
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to live giving up four big plays. Take that same
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: success rate of fifty percent, but apply it to a
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: team that blitzes sixteen times like the Patriots did. Well,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: now you've given up eight big plays. You're still having
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: the same amount of success with the blitz, but you've
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: given up twice as many big plays. So the more
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you I don't know, I'm trying to figure out a
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: way to make it not sound as obvious or maybe
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: this is just a.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Bad take by me because it is too obvious. But
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: if you're gonna blitz that much, you have to be
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: good at it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: Yeah, because you can't get by with an average success
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: rate because the more you blitz, like that's more big
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: plays are giving up, the more you're.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Exposed on the backside. Thank you. It's the what I'm
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: looking for so well. Because so this was another thing
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: that we talked about yesterday. It was the third and
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: twenty blitz at the end of the game. And I remember,
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: you know, in twenty nineteen, and I said this yesterday.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: So I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but in twenty
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: nineteen with the Boogeyman defense, I remember how much cover
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: zero they were running. It was like all they were doing.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: That's Stefan Gilmour in his prime, defensive Player of the Year,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Stefan Gilmore. They had a great secondary. They were just
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: running cover zero, cover zero, cover zero all the time.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: And that's where the Seeing Ghost thing came from with
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Sam Darnold, like it was the whole thing. And I
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: remember going into the locker room after the Seeing Ghosts
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: game and I went to the McCarty's and I asked
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: the McCarty twins, like, what what's it like playing defensive
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: back when you're sending the house right and you're playing
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: cover zero all the time, And both of them said,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: the most important thing is is that the pass rush
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: better get the frick home because we're out. We're back there,
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: and we are on islands and we are exposed. So
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: if this pass rush and the ball doesn't come out
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: quickly because of the pass rush, or they don't sack
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: them or whatever, then we're screwed, Like we can't cover
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: forever back here. And when I watched the third and
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: twenty play. The fact that Dante Thornton can run a
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: double move yet Carlton Davis to bite on it and
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: then run down the field forty yards and Gino Smith
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: is not on his butt is more indicative of the
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: call and the lack of pressure than it is on
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Carlton Davis. And then they sent seven on that plat.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I argued with Paul and Fred about this because they
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: told me that, you know, Carlton Davis can't get burned
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: like that. Carlon Davis is sitting there expecting the ball
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: to have to come out, like he's thinking that it's
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: cover zero and there's gonna be a ton of pressure
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: and the ball is gonna come out quickly, and I'm
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: gonna just jump this or I'm gonna, you know, make it.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: You know, he runs a hitch and he's probably thinking, oh,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: he's adjusting to the blitz and he's gonna run a
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: hitch in front of me to give Gino a quick
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: out out of the pressure. And then all of a
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: sudden he's running by him and the pressure doesn't do
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: its job. So if you're gonna blitz, you gotta get home,
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: especially if you're gonna cover zero you got to get home.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Absolutely true. All right, Chris is in New Hampshire. What's up? Chris?
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: Hey follows heavy one of day, Thank you too. Last
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: year everything was like Drake's left foot forward and mechanics
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: and mechanics and all this stuff. Is he getting that
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: help this year? And who is the quarterbacks coach? And
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: then my other question is how different is what Dabele
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: does what Josh McDaniel does, because I think they both
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: run the same AP style offense and I was kind
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: of hoping to see McDaniels and Drake do what kind
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: of Dable and Alan were doing when they were doing
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: it together. Let's take the answer off air.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Thanks Chris. It's a very good question about
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: his footwork in mechanics and something that I maybe we'll
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: get some answers about. We'll talk to Josh McDaniels tomorrow.
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: We don't talk to the offensive coaches this week. We
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: talked to them last week. Patriots quarterbacks coaches Ashton Grant.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: And when they hired Ashton Grant, Ashton Grant was actually
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: in Cleveland in his past stop running the same system
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: that AVP was running here last year. So the hope
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: was is that some of these things like the left
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: foot forward and the footwork stuff that AVP did with
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: Drake would translate would continue into this system because of
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: the Ashton Grant overlap there. It's a very fair question.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: I said it off the top of the show. To me,
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: if Drake May falls apart mechanically and reverts back to
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: the way that he was at North Carolina, that's as
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: much of an indictment on the coaches as it is
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: on him. Like it's their responsibility to make him fundamentally
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: sound and keep him fundamentally sound. That is their job.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: That is why they are here now. I don't want
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: to make it. I don't want to scapegoat Ashton Grant here.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: I want to be careful. Josh McDaniels is running Drake May.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: This is Josh McDaniels' job. This is his show. He's
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: with the quarterbacks all the time. Josh McDaniels in the
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: past has often been an offensive coordinator slash quarterbacks coach
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: with the Patriots in other places. So don't pass the
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: buck to Ashton Grant like this is who was it
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: was it Steve Smith that like blamed Taekwon Underwood for
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: like the Patriots receivers. Yeah, like, don't don't pass the
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: buck to the lieutenants. This is not the lieutenants problem.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: This is a Rabel Josh McDaniel's problem. This is high
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: level stuff like the quarterback in the development of your
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: second year quarterback is not on the position coach. I
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: think that just in general, just a quick soapbox thing,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: like I think we blame the lieutenants way too much
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: for things. A lot of those decisions are made way
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: above their pay grade. It's like blaming middle management for
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: CEO problems. And I don't want to escapegoat Ash and
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: Grant by any means. Todd is in Gardner. What's up, Todd?
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: Todd got you? All right? Todd call back in We
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: We know you're listening. Bride is in Ohio. What's up, Brad?
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: Hey, guys had under that good.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:13:08Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: I just had a couple observations and you know, questions too.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: And first of all, on the you know the question
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: about the Davis play, I agree with. I used to
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: play safety, so yeah, you're gonna bite on. You're going
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: after the ball wherever it's you know, if the guy's
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: making a move, you're making a move with him, you're
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: and you're probably not thinking vertical route anyway, coach or player.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: So you know, so it was a good play call
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: in bad corner play.
- 1:13:42Speaker 7: That's just what a.
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: Little bulls down to to me or whoever's guarding the guy.
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: But nonetheless, let's just hypothetically say that's Gonzales out there. Well,
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: then I'm running that play a little bit more with
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: him being that guy instead of David right, So that
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: makes a difference too when you're run zero blitz and
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: then at something. I'm wondering what you guys would think
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: if we run the left against elite pass rushers more
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: with will string versus you know, him having to neutral
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: live a blocker or a rusher seventy five percent of
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: the time running left against an elite pass rusher opposed
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: to making them, you know, hold up the pass protection.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: What do you guys think about that? Thank you?
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely think there was something going on there
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: with Campbell and Wilson and wanted to get them off
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: the ball and into the game. Right. Like, if you
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: run behind guys, offensive lineman will always tell you like
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: they they want to run block. They don't want to
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: pass block, they want to come off the ball, they
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: want to hit some people, they want to get into
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: the game physically. I talked to Jared Wilson on Friday
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: of last week. That's exactly what he said to me.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: I was like, what what is you know? When will
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: you know what will make you comfortable in this game?
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: And he said, you know, run, let's run the ball,
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: let me hit some people, let me get off the football,
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: get on a double team, move some bodies. They just
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: weren't able to move the bodies like that. That that
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: was all it really was. But I do think that
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: there was some element of now, they didn't have to
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: do it the whole time, like they could have mixed
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: it up a little bit. But I think there was
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: some element of let's get these rookies comfortable. Let's try
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: to get them into some run game stuff. Let's run
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: behind them, let's show some confidence in them in that
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: way too, and you know, let's see where it goes.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: He brought up Campbell. We haven't really talked much about Campbell.
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: I think that's a great thing that we haven't talked
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: much about Campbell. If he had a terrible game, I
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: think we'd be talking a lot more about Campbell. So
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: I think that that's a really good sign. And I
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: think that with Campbell specifically, what did you see in
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: this game and what did because I thought that he
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: the fall stars obviously can't happen, you know, he's got
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: to cut down on those, that's a given. But in
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: terms of the block to block execution, like how his
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: actual blocking looked, I thought this was really promising stuff
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: for him.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: I thought he was solid, you know, as a run blocker,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I thought he was obviously didn't have a ton of
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: success running the ball. He didn't have a ton of opportunities.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: I think he gave you a baseline. You know, him
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: and Jared Wilson struggled on some double teams, struggled to
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: get up to the second level at times. So that's
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: something that they're going to need to build and you know,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: talking to David Andrews on Monday, kind of said, that's
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: just something that's going to come with continuity. That's the
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: five guys with the same set of eyes and maybe
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: you're seeing the result of Jared Wilson missing that time
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: at the end of camp Yeah, and them just need
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: to get back on the same page. I thought as
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: a pass blocker, he looked solid.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: I really do.
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: I think that's more or less what I expected to
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: get out of him. He's not Joe Thomas, right, but
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: I thought he was fine. I know he's getting tagged
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: for two sacks. So the first one, to me, Drake
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: May just steps up and.
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: The pressure is caused by Crosby on the end.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Rosby comes around, beats with Bradbury. I think Jared Wilson
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: and Drake May steps up, and that's when where Drake
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: May should probably flip the shoulders and peel out, but he.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Steps up on not on Campbell.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Tyree Wilson's literally able to just disengage, turn to his left,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: and Drake May's right there. The second one is interesting
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: if you go back and you watch that play, this
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: is the strip sack. Campbell sets up pretty far inside Malcolm.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: He's expecting the chip, and you don't get much of
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: a chip. Ramondrake kind of gives him one of like
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the elbows. It's not a full chip, it's not a
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: full check and release. And look, we don't know the play,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: so maybe he wasn't supposed to do that, and he
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: saw Campbell needed help and held up. But what I
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: think is telling is I think he realizes he didn't
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: help enough for Mondra because he turns back around and
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: at one point him and Campbell are sandwiching Malcolm koons
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: like remanderies behind him with his hands on the numbers
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: on the back of his jersey. So you want to
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: put that one half on Campbell, I guess, But I
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: think he.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Was supposed to get help their didn't get help.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: It again, I don't want to give away the whole
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: podcast if people want to go back and listen. On
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: the Sports of YouTube page, David Andrews pointed out something
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: really interesting. So when Trent Brown was on, when Trent
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Brown was that guy in twenty eighteen, right, he didn't
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: want help because and this is just what Andrews, right,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: you have a plan for how you're going to attack
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: the guy, and you want to attack him. And now,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: if you're expecting help, you're gonna set up differently. But
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: if the help doesn't come right or whatever.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: And a lot of guys say that they get thrown
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: off by chips because you're you're set inside, you're expecting
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: the chips. Sometimes the chip can actually push the defender
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: so far to the inside that you get beat inside.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Other times, the Chipchael on the strip sack, the trip
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: isn't his chip isn't fully there, and so then you
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: get beat to your edge. There's a lot of tackles
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: that would prefer to not deal with chips.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: So yeah, and so look, I don't we kind of
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: spent all summer saying they're going to have to help
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: out Will Campbell, and I don't think that's incorrect, but
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: there's going to be a line there, right, And.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: If you get that game from Will Campbell for seventeen games, great,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: like the blocking, the penalties, like you said, like that
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: can't happen. He did have a little bit of a
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: penalty problem last year at LSU. That was my bigger
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: knock on him, frankly than the arm length was there
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: was an uptick in penalties last year. And you can't be,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: especially at home, you can't be committing false starts.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so I would like to see him, you know,
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: obviously the whole unit. But right, he's a better run
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: blocker than he showed up, so he's got to improve there.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: I think him and.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Wilson getting more chemistry in that regard will help. But
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: like more or less, if that's the game he get
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: from him, especially as a pass.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: I mean three, I had him with three pressures on
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: fifty three dropout, which is not bad at all. So
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: that's not bad at all. You gotta kind of put
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: player no, and you gotta you kind of have to
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: put the strip sack on him like it's his guy.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Like I, yes, he's suspecting the chick. It's on him
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: that it's his guy. We can give we can give
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: defensive lineman half a sack.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: I think I don't like half sacks. I'm not a
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: believer in that.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: All right, But if we're gonna give it a defensive lineman,
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: like I think it's half, it's half on him because
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: you do want your fourth overall pick to recover better
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: when the chick's not there. But he was expecting No,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: that's the kind of mistake that like if he if
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: that happens in December, I'll hold it against him a
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: lot more than happening in his first NFL start.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: I like how you're doing this podcast with David Andrews
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: because now you're interested in the offense.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: I was always interested, but now I just feel that's
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: your No, what don't say it was never interesting?
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: And you know I'm not saying like interested in, like
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: you didn't care about it. I'm saying interested in takes
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: about it normally. I had, like you know, you just
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: kind of this is your area of expert.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: No, I love it, just to fault to you and
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: let you cook. I got great stuff from d A

- 1:21:08Speaker 2: around to it. I don't expect you to listen to

- 1:21:12Speaker 1: You don't need to listen to your old show anymore.

- 1:24:08Speaker 2: let's take Mark in Connecticut's call, and then we're going
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: to talk dolphins. Mark, what's going on?
- 1:24:15Speaker 11: Hey guys, how you doing?
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: Evin?
- 1:24:16Speaker 11: I tried to get a hold of you guys yesterday,
- 1:24:18Speaker 11: but you guys were pretty jamming there at Patriots unfieldered
- 1:24:21Speaker 11: so what my couple of questions were? And I didn't
- 1:24:26Speaker 11: know if we could go back and forth a little
- 1:24:28Speaker 11: bit instead of hanging up. But sure, Jack Westover got
- 1:24:31Speaker 11: moved to fullback.
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: I was at the game. I don't think I saw
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: him take a snap at full back, and I really
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: wanted him to be a fullback and to open up
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: the gap because as you saw, there was no gaps
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: open at all. To run it up to guy like
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: there was absolutely nothing. And then my other take was
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: Jayjon Boody, I think you guys are forgetting he should
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: have been a first round pick. I think his first
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: year at LSU he went off for some crazy amount
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: of yards and reception, and I think we might be
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: looking at first year lsu k Shawn Booty Reborn. So
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: what do you guys think of that?
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call. Mark. I would say that
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: with the full back, Jack west Ever played two snaps
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: in this game, and I thought both times it didn't
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: go well, and I think they kind of were like, well,
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: if we can't get the first level blocked, then there's
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: no point of having a full back because he's not
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: getting to the block that he needs to get to anyways.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: So it really just is another body just mucking things up,
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: and so I think they kind of went away from that.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: He had one play in particular that was just kind
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: of like a lead and Garrett Bradbury gets beat on
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. So Jack Westover has to just
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: take Garrett Bradbury's guy and now Devin White, the linebacker
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: is unblocked anyways, and so Devin White just crashes down
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: and makes the taggle. You know, if you're not getting
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: up to that next level of the defense, then there's
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: it kind of ruins the point of the fullback, if
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: that makes sense. Uh, his booty take. Yes, we Hey, look,
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: we talked a lot about booting the draft and for
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: some reason, Alex, we are, especially me, are getting labeled
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: booty haters, like we all of a sudden hate Kai
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: Shan Boody. H. I think it's great what Kay Shan
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: body has done. He's developed, he's gotten better and better
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: with each season. Uh. He his first season at LSU,
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: he was really, uh explosive, he was he was an
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: explosive athlete. I think he's become more technically savvy and stronger.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: I don't see necessarily that uh you know, breakaway speed
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: like I always remember at LSU, like him catching that
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: slant against was it like old miss or Mississippi State? Yeah,
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: and just gone to the house, right. I don't know
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: if that's Kai Shan Boody's game anymore. But he's evolved
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: and he's gotten better and better. I think it's great
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: what he's done, and he's really deserves a ton of
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: credit for it, and frankly a ton of credit for
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: it during a timeframe where not a lot of other
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: receivers have developed here. So he's kind of done it.
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: No offense to the coaching staff. He's kind of done
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: it on his own.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: He's done it over over multiple coaching staff Yeah, you know,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: multiple coaches, So.
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: You know he's been he's been like, Yeah, I was
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: out on him for a little bit.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: He ran like a would he run it like a
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: four to eight?
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: And no, I wasn't that bad. It was like a
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: four or five.
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: I wish I knew he ran it bad. Ankle, Yeah,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: that was context.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: That would would have been good.
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: We didn't find that out till after the draft. But
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: he's always at I've said this, he's always at talent.
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: I've never denied he has talent. It was consistency. He
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: just needed to be able to go out there weekend
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: and week out and do it and look, it's just
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: one game, so we'll see.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: But that was my big thing with me camp.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: This was the best camp he's had because he was
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: showing up every single day and we weren't going three,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: four five days without a catch the way he had
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: the previous couple of years. So if he can be
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: more consistent, the talent's there. You just can't have a
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: guy out there that you can't count on week to week.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: And maybe some people would disagree, this is a me thing,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: Like I'm general lower on George Pickens than most people.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: George Pickens is like the extreme idea of this or
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: Gabe Davis, where you know they'll have a thousand yard seasons,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: seven hundred of the yards come in four games. And
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I'm not saying that that's bad, but especially on a
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: team that doesn't like those guys are really good number
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: twos because you can't rely on them every week and
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: you need somebody you rely on, and your offense can't
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: bank on a guy like that. I'm not saying this
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: offense needs a bank on Kaishan Booty, but that's just
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: always been my opinion. Give me the guy that puts
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: up a thousand yards in a season but is more
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: or less giving you the same thing every week over
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: the guy that puts up eleven or twelve hundred yards
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: in a season, but it's all in like five games
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: and then he just disappears in the rest of it.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I unless you're a team that has a ton of
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: talent around him, like that guy needs to be a
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: complimentary piece. That guy can't be a main part of
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: your offense. And right now, Kaishan Boody looks a lot
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: more consistent, and so if he's gonna look this consistent,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: he is talented and he should have a bigger role.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: So I I want to continue to preface this by
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: saying this is not a knock on kish On Booty.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: My only take on kish On Booty that might not
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: be the most positive thing that I could possibly say,
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: is I'm just not sure that it's he's a number
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: one receiver, and if he's your best receiver or your
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: more most productive receiver, then I don't know if that
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: means that you have a great passing offense. That's not like,
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: that's not his fault, like it's not it's not I'm
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: not taking shots at him. Like he's developed, he's gotten
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: better and better, he's gotten more consistent, to your point,
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: and he has now made himself a viable NFL wide receiver.
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: But they need guys that make him more of a
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: complimentary piece than the focal point of the offense. I
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: just don't see number one receiver ability. And if that
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: you're gonna take that as me crapping on the guy,
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: then I guess that's how you're gonna take it. But
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: that's a good thing. They have a receiver that can
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: play in Kai Shan Boody. That's good. Once Diggs gets
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: more comfortable and gets his knee back to one hundred
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: and ten percent and gets that game speed back up.
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: Hopefully it's to Fon Diggs is the number one receiver
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: that we hoped he was when they assigned him, and
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: now Kaishan Boody is like a complimentary or number two
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: receivers Tofawon Diggs, and now you're cooking with something. Now
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: there's something that you got going on. Or if it
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: doesn't happen for Diggs, it's next offseason. It's a it's
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: a high priority, and you go out and you get
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: a true number one guy and you make Kaishan Boody
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: a number two or a number three receiver, and now
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: you have depth. Now you have a good receiver room.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: That's the hope. There's not a knock on Kaishan Boody.
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: That's just the roster and the talent on the roster.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: The other receiver thing that we're getting a ton of
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: questions about alex is Kyle Williams and did not play
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: much in this game. Did have one catch and that
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: hurry up two minute towards the end of the game
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: where I thought he ran a nice route, ran a
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: nice comeback. You kind of got the corner out, got
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: up to top speed, sat the route down, I ran
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: the corner off a little bit and craved that underneath separation.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: There's a lot of conversations about Matt Collins' performance in
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: this game, obviously to Mario Douglas's performance in this game.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: Would you like to see more Kyle Williams in week two?
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I think they need that speed. Who
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: do you put him on the field for. I know
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: a lot of people probably want pop.
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: Douglas off the field.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: I think that there was more there that he could
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: have done that. I think the Raiders were sitting on
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: him at times and take him away. I think Drake
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: may missed him at times. You know, Diggs game, what
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: do you make of that first game back off the ACL.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: It obviously wasn't a massive game, but I think it
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: was probably a bit of a feeling out process.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: I thought it was good enough from Diggs. I thought
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: it was good enough.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: So like I would go to a rotation between those
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: three guys probably, I don't think you're putting Kyle Williams
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: on the field for someone. I take a few snaps
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: from Digs, few snaps from Douglas, and get Kyle Williams
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: on the field. Yeah, I'd like see more.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: They need a speed, they need his ability after the
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: catch and just see.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: They can't bury another receiver. They can't do another year
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: of its Week eight until even see the draft pick receiver.
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Yeah. So I think the speed is the number one thing.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: They need somebody with some vertical juice and the ability
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: to win with speed on the outside. And that's Kyle
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: Williams's game. That's why he's here, that's why they drafted him.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: So I would like to see it. It doesn't have
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: to be a huge package of plays. He doesn't have
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: to go out there and play seventy snaps on Sunday,
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: but maybe you give him twenty to twenty five snaps
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: instead of what I think he had a handful in
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: this game, and he really only got him I think
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: because Booty got hurt. Yeah, and allow him to play
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: a little bit more. I would really like to see
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: that on Sunday. Trying to look up his snapcount real quick. Yeah,
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: he played seven. I thought I was gonna say seven,
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: but I wasn't a hundred percent sure he played seven
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: in this game. I think if you get that to
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: twenty and you just give him a few more routes
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: and get more off opportunities. That would be a good
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: thing with Pop. I thought that Pop he had to drop.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: And I saw this a little bit on the preseason
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: tape after the one in Minnesota that Drake airmailed over
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: his head. I thought there were opportunities for Pop in
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: this game. I thought he got opened a couple of
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: times underneath the defense. And we've already we've already nitpicked
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Drake enough about the short game and the short passing.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: But my developing theory back in the preseason, and I
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: continue to have this developing theory, is Pop Douglas a
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: five foot eight slot receiver that doesn't have a large
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: catch radius. I don't think that this is an issue
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: of like Pop Douglas wasn't sitting properly against zones and
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: stuff like that. I don't think that's what was happening.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: It's not Pop Douglas's fault that he gets open on
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: the first third down of the game and Drake throws
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: a ten yards over his head right like that. That's
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: not the receiver's fault. He was open, he ran the
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: right route, he was in the right place. It just
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: he missed the throw. He missed the row, he was
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: opened twice. He caught the touchdown to play before that.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: He was also open again on the crosser and Drake
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: missed him. He just didn't make a great throw. So
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: I get the stat line looks bad, but I would
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: just say with Pop, I did not think, because I
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: see that I'm seeing this a ton that he's not
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: sitting in zone and this is a big conversation with
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: him now that I not to like toot my own horner,
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: like go on an ego trip here for a second.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: I feel like partially responsible for because I feel like
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: we brought that. We bring this up a lot on
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: this show. This is the type of stuff we talk
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: about a lot on this show. I don't think that
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: that was the issue on Sunday. I think the issue
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: on Sunday was he had a bad drop. Yep, Drake
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: missed him a couple of times, and it just didn't
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: go well. They just couldn't get on the same page.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: They couldn't get on the same page. They when Pop
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: was opened, Drake missed him, When Pop, when Drake hit him,
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Pop dropped it right, And it was so that sort
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: of thing. So I'll give it a little bit more time.
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: Before we start. I know there's already calls for afting
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: chain and give it a little bit more.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: You gotta get Kyle Williams on the field first before
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: fton Chism. Like that's well, we'll we'll get there with
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: fton chism. Kyle Williams was first of all higher, he
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: was a draft pick. Chism wasn't drafted.
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he brings straight line speed that Chism doesn't give
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: you that you need you gotta get. You gotta figure
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: it out first Kyle.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: Williams, and then you can figure out afton Chism.
- 1:35:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: Last thing on pop the the working theory, the catch
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: radious thing I think might be at play here, and
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: I highly doubt that that Drake may whatever admit to it,
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: and he shouldn't. But when you don't have great accuracy
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: throw to throw, and then you're throwing to you know,
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: in a small pocket in zone coverage and you have
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: to hit a five foot eight slot receiver that's moving
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: across the field, that has to be a pinpoint accurate throw.
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: If it's a little behind, if it's a little high,
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: that's a pick.
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: So do you worry about that at all? With Kyle Williams,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: tho Kyle Williams. I mean he's not as small as piece.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: Yeah, not as much because I think of where he's
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: going to be targeted, Like I think Pop is running
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: over the middle of the feat do you worry about
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: with Chisholm. Not as much because he's bigger. Is he
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: how much bigger? It's five ten five eleven, I mean
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: it's yeah, two and a half inches taller is not nothing.
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: But I'm not with you. I'm not there yet. I'm
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: not I'm not on twosm Island yet. I'm not We're
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: not going there yet. But I do think that the
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: catch radius thing is something to think about, something to monitor.
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: Is just does is it better off in the long
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: term for Drake made to have receivers like at least
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: like a Kaishan booty type, you know, that has a
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: bigger frame and has a bigger catch radius. That's why
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: I don't want to give up on mac Collins either,
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: because I think that that's a perfect type of receiver
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: for Drake. If Mac Collins can get his game going,
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: it's a really good fit from a six foot four
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: big target. Like we see how how comfortable he is
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: throwing a hunter Henry, you know, It's just I think
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: it's a catch radius thing I do. Dolphins. I keep
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: saying it, Dolphins, Dolphins, Dolphins were talking about the Dolphins
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: this game on Sunday. To me, I don't think the
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Patriots are good enough to call it a trap game,
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: but it's kind of one of those trappy games because
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: I keep hearing about how and I know this is
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: your boy, McDaniel. I know you are loving the fact that.
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: Can we talk about how he's a bad head coach
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: yet or do we still have to wait?
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: Because he look at all the motion? The motion's fun?
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: Is it fun getting your doors blown off by a team?
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Get the first overall pick and the Colts.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: No, the Colts might be better than me think. I
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: don't think so. I can't sit here though, and say, well,
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: the Dolphins are imploding like this should be. The Patriots
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: would win this game. The Patriot Dolphins. They might be,
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: but the Patriots have never beaten to a No. They
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: haven't won him down in Miami since twenty nineteen. That
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: was Tom Brady was the quarterback of the Patriots. The
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: last time they beat the Miami Dolphins in Miami. Antonio
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Brown was catching passes from Tom Brady. The last time
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: the Patriots beat the Miami Dolphins in Miami, they've never
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: solved Tua. Now it's a different coaching staff, different defense.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: I do think the defense that they're running now has
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: a better chance against Tua because it's not the bigger
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: linebackers that are, you know, clunky in space, and they're
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: not going to use their team speed to stretch a Maut. Well,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: they'll try, but maybe they won't be as effective at
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: doing that, but you can. If you want to take
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: your McDaniel victory lap, I'll let you do it. But
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: in my mind, I'm throwing out week one for Miami,
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: and I'm going off the history, like seven to zero
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: against the Patriots for Tua they had, the Patriots have
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: never played well down in Miami. I can't imagine sitting
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: here and having a ton of confidence about the Patriots
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: going down in Miami this week.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: So I'll just say this about the Patriots having never
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: beat Tua, I do put and I don't know, Evan,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: you can tell me if I'm allowed to put this
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: asterisk on this. It might be the Patriots have never
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: beat two. I don't think it's about Tua. I think
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: it's about the Dolphins defense. I know you keep saying,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: so just just real quick, just real quick. Outside of
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: last year, which was obviously a mess, right, they just
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: weren't good last year. The points the Dolphins have scored,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: the two was put up against the Patriots twenty four
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: to twenty thirty three. That was in Miami, twenty two,
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: and I think there's a couple defensive touchdowns in there. Yeah,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: seventeen to twenty two. He's never out Before last year,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: he had never thrown multiple touchdowns in a game.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Right, But it's the official against the Patriots actially the game.
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: It's the efficiency, but like, yeah, it's efficiency because the Patriots.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: So here's the Patriots scoring totals. They were not competitive
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: in those two games with him last year.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: I just listen, here's Patriots scoring totals fifteen seventeen, seventeen seven,
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: twenty four, sixteen twelve. He's just not screwing up. He's
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: it's not like he's out here dicing the Patriots up.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: He's not screwing up. I think he was dicing the
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: Patriots up. Not People are acting like he's thrown for
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: five hundred yards against them.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: But it's not about the yards it's about the efficiency
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: and it's about.
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: This is my point, because he can play that way
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: because the Patriots defense, the Patriots offense has The Dolphins
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: have done more damage defensively to the Patriots, and they
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: have offensively. Again, they've broken twenty once. Right, but against Miami.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: You're not going to get into a track meet with
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: Miami and try to outscore the Dolphins. No, but you
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: have not gonna win game. You have to score.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: They're just making them entirely too comfortable. The bigger issue
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: for the Patriots again, this is not like two has
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: been good. This is not to say hasn't. I just
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: think this thing gets miscast. I think the bigger issue
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: against the Dolphins has been the offense, not the defense.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: Going back to twenty twenty, I think it's that they
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: can't do anything. Now they had some really good defensive
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: coordinators there. Defensive head coaches was Flores and then it
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: was it's Fangio, right was there whom my third year
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: per year? And now the defense might be better, Right
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: now the defense might be bad. So they got a score.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: They've got a score against my I get you don't
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: want to get into a track meet with him. Although
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: I'm a little less scared of that this year. When
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: you look at what the Patriots defensive line did and
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: when you look at what my off Miami's offensive line
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: is going to be in this game, I think they're
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: going to be starting a career right career college right tackle.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: I don't know how many NFL games he's played at
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: right guard this week, if I saw that correctly.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: Yeah, Keon something or other, Keon Smith or the.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Patriots should be able to disrupt the Miami offense more. Sorry,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: they they have to the games in Miami. They've only
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: actually played to uh twice in Miami.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: Oh no, that's twice last week in that game and
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: we trunk. He didn't play in the first game. He
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: was hurt. Right, eighty second percentile EPA per play to
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: eighty second percent times. I'm not good with percentiles. You want, yeah,
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: you want it to be closer to one hundred. He
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: was good last week. You know this is last year
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: against the Patriots. Okay, twelve last year against the patrik Yes,
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: you're eighty sec point plus zero point three to two
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: EPA per play like he he was? Does them up?
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: I don't know what we're.
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: Talking about, right, and I even said last year, last year,
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: they were bad. They've they've scored more than seventeen points once. Evan,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: regardless of what to it does, can't score. But in
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: seventeen points.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: Going to get a problem sometimes with points allowed and
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: things like that. Like it's about the way the game
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: goes right, like Miami is is just they have not
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: stopped to him. I'm not like the game before that
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: that they played to a week two. Remember that game
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: here Gonzo had the pick. Yeah, it was one of
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: his first signature plays. Seventy ninth percentile EPA per play,
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: Like they just I don't think that they've done a
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: lot of good things against Tua, and I think that
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: it's more recent like when he was early on in
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: his career. I probably am with you that early on
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: in his career.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: So last year's team that was not good in any facet,
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: I will get it.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: Yes he turned it on twenty three, Like I can
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: keep going back, But they like to two has had
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: a lot of success against them.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: He has, but they've also allowed him to get very
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: comfortable because the offense is a non factor. So the
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: offense is not.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: A threat they when you play to how we're.
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: On the opposite side of this, Like usually it's me
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: arguing no defense matters, and you're the ones saying, just
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: score all the points and who cares what.
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: It does, because I think that depends on the game,
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: on the team that you're playing. Oh so now you
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: want to add context. I don't think that this is
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: so the opposite where we u. I do not think
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: that you can get into a track meet with the Dolphins.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: You can't get into a track meet, but you have
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: to score. Scoring more than seventeen points is not a
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: track meet.
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: Yeah you're okay, thank you, but you can't like you can't.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: They can't score board seventeen points on them.
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: Okay, but you can't sit here and say that Tua
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: hasn't played well against the Patriots.
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: No, I never said that, but I just view it
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: as the bigger issue. They're both issues. They've sucked against
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: the Dolphins on both sides of the ball.
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: I think Miami's team's speed has overwhelmed them every single
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: time they play since since Ta McDaniel and Tyree kill
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: have gotten there. I think that they've been non competitive
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: against their speed.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: Their inability to do anything offensively, and those games gets
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: underrated because everybody looks.
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: At what Tua did, and I don't know.
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: People want to take a victory lap on to a
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: being good against the Patriots? Would I I don't get it, like, yeah,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: Bill never beat him. Sure, there's people that want to
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: take a victory lap on that that's not.
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: The whole story.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: That that that's ignoring a whole chunk of what's going on.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: That's been the issue. They have not been able to
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: crack Miami's defense in years. And even if they do
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: a little bit better of a job on Tua, you're
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: not gonna beat this team scoring again twelve sixteen, twenty four, seven,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: seventeen fifes.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: But you're not gonna be anybody doing that right, and
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: that's why they haven't one.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: But why do we just ignore it against the Dolphins?
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: It matters again everybody else against the dog. That's what
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: you're doing by just say to all I've heard this
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: week is to it to it?
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: Can the Patriots?
- 1:44:45Speaker 7: Can?
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: We ask the Patriots to score points against him, and
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: we can drive. But the thing that he gets he
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: can take the easy read every time. And yes, he's
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: been incredibly efficient because he doesn't have to take any
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: risks because he knows that if he puts up twenty points,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: they're gonna win the game. Put a little pressure on
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: him score some points. I'm not saying getting a track, which.
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: We love, got for them to score some points. I
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: just don't know if they can. Like I, this is
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: what I've been does. This is why I've been so down.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: It does because if they're going to score thirteen points
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: a game, then they're not going anywhere. We all know that,
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: and you know what they're reality. They should be better. Yes,
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: they have to score.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: They should have been better against in this game because
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: the line sucks. Who knows what's where Tyreek Hills at
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: like they should the.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: Coach who knows the going get it. This is God,
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: this is the game. This has got to be it.
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: But even with all that, they have to score more
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: than seventeen points.
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: Probably do it. Thank you that that's a that's a
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: bold take by you, that they have to score seventeen points.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: He has apparently been single handedly been beating the patrols,
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: he's blocking, he's catching.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: You watch this game like when you watched that game
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: last year down in Miami. Do you think they were
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: competitive against Miami's offense?
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: No, but there I honestly don't really remember that much
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: about that game.
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: I was going to watch it today. But like it
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: was like early on in that game, like they it
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: was not campetitive, they were getting they were runs together
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: for me at this time, Okay, let's move on and
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: off of Tua first. In this capacity, we're gonna go,
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: We're gonna agree to this. Ignore the fact that their offense.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: Their offense has been bad for two years, really three years.
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: We know that, we know that their offens been bad.
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: The The key to Tua to me is taking away
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: the middle of the field. He loves throwing those in
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: breaking routes. That's what kills the Patriots because their linebackers
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: and safeties have not been great cover players over the
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: last handful of years. That's you, it's a bad matchup, right,
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: Like it's tuas really good at attacking between the numbers
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: on those inbreaking routes. You know, the slants, the crossers.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: Like you, We've seen it in a million times. It's
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: Tyree Kill and Jaylen Waddle coming running across the field
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: against a Patriot linebacker safety and it's not it's not close,
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: it's not competitive. So taking away the middle of the field,
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: and he is a rhythmic passer. He's a time rhythmic passer.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: So you've got to get pressure on him. They hit
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: him and you got to move him off his spot,
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: and you got it. The whole offense, from the motion,
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: to all of the routes that they like to run from,
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: the inbreaking stuff, from the anticipation he likes to throw to,
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: the entire offense is predicated on timing. Is a timing
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: based game for them. That's what they're a West Coast offense.
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: That's true for most West Coast offenses, but it's even
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: more true for Miami. So the best way to throw
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: off their timing and their rhythm is to get to
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: an office spot. You gotta move them, You got to
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: hit them, you got to get make him hold of football,
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: because what they've had issues with in the past, especially
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: on early downs against Tua, is that he just gets
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: rid of the ball so dang quickly that they can't
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: get to him and he's just dicing them up in
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: the middle of the field. So Raybell had some success
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: in twenty thirteen or twenty twenty three, I should say,
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: as a Titans head coach against Tua, a lot of
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: too high coverage a lot of Tampa too, with that
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: whole player just sitting in the slant and dig window
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: just waiting for him to throw that ball and just
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: allowing you know, the pass rush some time and making
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: them hold it on the other side of the ball.
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: For the Patriots with Drake May against this defense, the
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: Miami secondary is in hell like they are decimated by injuries.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Jack Jones right now is probably their best and number
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: one corner, which kind of tells you where they are
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: from a defense perspective. Minca is still back there, but
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: the rest of the secondary is really I mean, Daniel
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: Jones looked like he was Tom Brady on Sunday in Indianapolis.
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: That being said, they have a good front, they have
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: a good pass rush package. Past pass rush package, it's
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: hard to say they have a good front and pass
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: rush package. That's what beat the Patriots last year in
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: Week twelve, and Drake starred against them. Anthony Weaver coming
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: it came after him, He blitzed him a time, a
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: lot of different types of Britz pressure. That was a
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: big problem for them in that game. So being ready
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: for that, obviously, Bradley Chubb coming off the injuries not
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: quite the same guy right now, but Bradley Chubb, Jalen Phillips,
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: Zack Sealer. They have a good front seven, they have
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: a good pass rush. So in this game, you gotta
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: try to figure out ways to block it because I
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: do think you're gonna have open receivers down the field.
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: I think everybody's gonna have open receivers against Miami. If
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: you can block it, just gotta block it. What are
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: you what are you looking for on this game? From Drake?
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: From Drake and the offense's home and the offense, well,
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: I would say on the defense first, just real quick again,
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: Miami's got a backup line in there, so you to
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: your point about too, like it's all pressure.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: It's all pressure and getting into him. On offense, I
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: mean they got to establish the run and the dolphin.
- 1:49:35Speaker 2: They weren't horrible.
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: Against the run last week, as bad as that game went,
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: but there should be opportunities to run on them. May
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: I just want to see him get his head on
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: right and like not kind of for again last week,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: throws that interception, change his game, come out, throw the ball,
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: test some windows, set his feet and just kind of
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: go back to where he was again. The first half
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: last week was fine. If that's what you get out
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: of Drake May on a regular basis, I think you can.
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: Live with that.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: You know, he had a couple of misses here and there,
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: but overall, I thought, I mean, that was competitive quarterback play.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: I was going to keep you in just about every game, right.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Obviously there's the element of, you know, late in the game,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: if it's close, how does he play there? But just
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: big picture, I thought that was perfectly fine quarterback, Like
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: can you get back to that and not get knocked
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: out of it?
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: So quickly? Here from Jonathan Jones, where's Jonathan Worgan in
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: front nowadays? CBS not former Patriot Jonathan no No Insider
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: reporter Jonathan Jones saying that the Dolphins are probably going
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: to have a backup right side to their offensive line.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: So I was right. Keon Smith is the in line
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: to start at right guard right now for James Daniels
- 1:50:40Speaker 2: who they just placed on ir and Austin Jackson's out
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: too with a injury as well. They're starting right tackle.
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: So you're looking at Keon Smith at right guard and
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: Larry Boram at right tackle. Harold Andrey against Larry Boram
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: is a matchup that the Patriot should be able to exploit,
- 1:50:57Speaker 2: and Milton Williams on whoever's it right? Right? So I
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: expect him to put ninety seven in two over the
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: right guard and the right tackle and just let let
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: him go to work and see what happens. Yeah, we
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: got to wrap up the show here, but we do
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: have two more calls really quickly though. It's your calls,
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: because we got to get the say stage set here
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: for Patriots unfiltered. James is in North Carolina. What's up, James? James?
- 1:51:22Speaker 7: Hey guys, I'm here, Okay, cool?
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: What's up?
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: Hear me?
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: All right?
- 1:51:25Speaker 7: I tried to writing yesterday, Paul and Fred didn't get
- 1:51:28Speaker 7: to it. It's understandable considering how yesterday's show went. Is
- 1:51:34Speaker 7: Josh McDaniel's capable of allowing Tom House to come in
- 1:51:40Speaker 7: and keep Drake May's fundamentals and mechanics where they need
- 1:51:45Speaker 7: to be, get them back where they need to be
- 1:51:47Speaker 7: because I heard you talking about his mechanics starting to
- 1:51:51Speaker 7: slip again already without getting butt hurt and causing friction
- 1:51:56Speaker 7: and that coaching staff.
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the calle, James. I don't know why
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: Tom House. I mean Tom House worked with Brady for
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: like fifteen years, so I don't know why that would
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: cause friction. I don't know if we're there yet. Like,
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: I don't know, it's been one game. I don't know
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: if they need to go to that extreme. Drake in
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: the past has worked with Clie Christensen, who was sort
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: of like an advisor to the program at North Carolina.
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: I am sure he is no longer working for North Carolina,
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: so that's been his guy in the past. Clie Christensen,
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: really good track record, Peyton Manning Andrew Luck with the
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: Colts for years. I don't think we're there yet. Now.
- 1:52:33Speaker 2: Every once in a while, especially during bye weeks, Brady
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: would have a little check in with Tom House during
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: the football season and just make sure everything was, you know,
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: going mechanically the correct way. So we'll see AJ is
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: in Spain. What's up AJ, guys?
- 1:52:50Speaker 12: So I just wanted to ask a little bit about
- 1:52:52Speaker 12: the defensive line. So I wasn't watching the game super closely,
- 1:52:57Speaker 12: but it felt like towards the end the pass us
- 1:53:00Speaker 12: really slowed down and just wasn't as effective. Then looking
- 1:53:02Speaker 12: at the snap counts after the game, you see Christian
- 1:53:04Speaker 12: Bahama up at like seventy percent, Milton Williams at seventy
- 1:53:07Speaker 12: eight percent, all those guys up in the upper seventies
- 1:53:10Speaker 12: for the main starters, And I was just curious, you know,
- 1:53:13Speaker 12: whether that was more like a scheme thing that the
- 1:53:15Speaker 12: Raiders were picking it up, or just that these guys
- 1:53:17Speaker 12: are getting gassed because early in the season and they
- 1:53:19Speaker 12: haven't played that much. But was just definitely a point
- 1:53:23Speaker 12: of concern that I wanted to hear a little bit
- 1:53:24Speaker 12: more about.
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: Yeah, a J So, I would say that if you
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: look across the board on interior defensive lineman, especially, very
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: few tier defensive linemen are playing every snap.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: No. In the seventies is pretty high for that position.
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: Especially for those two guys bar more Off blood Clotts
- 1:53:39Speaker 2: and Williams wasn't really a three down player in Philadelphia. Now,
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: Max Crossey played every snap because he's amazing.
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: So Max Crosby, like, yes, the Max Crosby's of the world.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: I think even Aaron Donald would usually only be about
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: like eighty percent.
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, most of the time, those interior guys rotate.
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: It's really hard to play that position from a conditioning standpoint.
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: Those are big boys and they're flying off the ball.
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: You want to keep them fresh, so there's a lot
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: of rotation usually there with that position group. All right,
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: we got to wrap up the show Patriots Unfiltered. We'll
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: start here in a few minutes at noon, so we'll
