- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, it's Daniel Mallee. We'll see you next week for
- 0:02Speaker 1: all new shows in an all new year. In the meantime,
- 0:05Speaker 1: these are a few of my favorite things from the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Treehouse Show in twenty twenty five. It is time you'll
- 0:30Speaker 1: leave your worries outside and laugh with us inside the Treehouse.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm Daniel Malley along with Trey Trenholm and Raj Sharma.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Today is Thursday, April twenty fourth, two thousand, twenty five. Trey,
- 0:48Speaker 1: If you don't mind, I'd like to quote you from
- 0:50Speaker 1: earlier this week, just when you thought it was going
- 0:55Speaker 1: to be a boring week, the.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Pope dies, you can get a conclave.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Am gonna skirt it up? Yeah, just when you think
- 1:03Speaker 1: it's going to be a boring week, we get a conclave. Well,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I forgot that. There's you know, there's the eventual conclave,
- 1:14Speaker 1: which is uh, it's all the cardinals of the Catholic
- 1:19Speaker 1: Church all come together into one room. They get locked
- 1:22Speaker 1: inside of it and they have to decide on who
- 1:24Speaker 1: the new Pope is going to be. But before and
- 1:28Speaker 1: then we all start watching Chimney smoke like crazy. But
- 1:31Speaker 1: before all that happens, I forgot about all the other
- 1:35Speaker 1: traditions that take place. Where where did it go here?
- 1:46Speaker 2: It is? Yeah, there's.
- 1:49Speaker 3: There's a lot of ancient traditions that really seemed to
- 1:54Speaker 3: be redundant at this point because of modern technology, but they.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Still do them. For example, with the death of Pope Francis,
- 2:03Speaker 1: we're learning about the selection of a new pope, but
- 2:06Speaker 1: there are also some very interesting things they do with
- 2:10Speaker 1: the dead pope. Historic rites and rituals are performed after
- 2:15Speaker 1: the death of a pope, including three blows to the
- 2:19Speaker 1: head with a silver hammer. Well they say it's supposed
- 2:24Speaker 1: to be three gentle taps on the forehead, but the
- 2:27Speaker 1: silver hammer part is accurate. And I know what you're thinking.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Are they checking to see if anyone's home?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Is this some.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Really weird Catholic version of a werewolf test? It's actually
- 2:43Speaker 1: the former. They're making sure he's dead. Look, I like traditions,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know, I like routine, but I think that's one
- 2:59Speaker 1: that you know, like, like you said, Trey, technology exists
- 3:04Speaker 1: that you can find out if there's anyone still at
- 3:07Speaker 1: home inside the pope. You don't need to use the
- 3:11Speaker 1: silver hammer method, although it is very entertaining.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Well it also it also the other interesting thing about
- 3:20Speaker 3: it is when they're doing that, they use his first
- 3:23Speaker 3: name now, so he's been going by Pope Francis for
- 3:29Speaker 3: it since eleven years.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So now they go pack or right in there, Frank, Frank,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you in there, Frank?
- 3:44Speaker 4: What if you're a what if you're a really heavy
- 3:46Speaker 4: sleeper and the three taps don't work?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Well, that's when you you know, the strength test at
- 3:52Speaker 1: the arcade or or at the state fair with the
- 3:55Speaker 1: really big hammer. Frank in there? Hey, look, high score,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I get a free turkey leg.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Frank.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Wake up, there's a making lady in here.
- 4:13Speaker 4: But what if he did?
- 4:14Speaker 2: He's like, how long have how long have I been out?
- 4:21Speaker 2: What I miss?
- 4:28Speaker 1: No? You're right, yeah, they actually uh, they tap him
- 4:31Speaker 1: on the head. Certain rights and rituals follow the death
- 4:34Speaker 1: of a pope, including tapping his forehead with a silver hammer.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It is the carme lingo's duty to perform the right,
- 4:42Speaker 1: administering three gentle taps on the pope's forehead and calling
- 4:50Speaker 1: him by his first name. It's the traditional way of
- 4:53Speaker 1: making sure a pope has died. Thanks, thank you, thank
- 5:00Speaker 1: you Catholicism for keeping certain traditions alive. Did they air
- 5:05Speaker 1: that by the way have they done that test or
- 5:07Speaker 1: is that the last thing they do before they take
- 5:11Speaker 1: it out of lying in the state.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Oh no, this is done in his like typically the
- 5:18Speaker 3: pontiff dies in his quarters and so it's it's all
- 5:20Speaker 3: done while he's in his bed.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And behind closed doors. Like closed doors. I want to
- 5:27Speaker 2: watch that, the breaking of the seal, the.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I want to see the tapping of the pope. Carry
- 5:35Speaker 1: that live on cable news.
- 5:38Speaker 4: They got a crush his ring, the ring that he
- 5:40Speaker 4: the papal ring that he They.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Have to break it, of course, you just have to
- 5:45Speaker 3: break it then melted down to a new one.
- 5:48Speaker 2: But this pope.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Typically those are gold rings. This one shows sterling silver,
- 5:55Speaker 3: which a may prove harder to break.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But uh, which also served as another test that he
- 6:01Speaker 1: was in fact not a werewolf.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Yes, but all these all these things happened for a reason,
- 6:09Speaker 4: Like the tapping of the head. That had to happen
- 6:11Speaker 4: for a reason, like they thought someone was dead.
- 6:15Speaker 1: There was one time some dude woke up. They're like, okay, yeah, yeah,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you got to start tapping these guys.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:24Speaker 4: They're like they're putting the holy water on him and
- 6:26Speaker 4: it gets splashed in the fen and it's like, hey,
- 6:27Speaker 4: what's going on?
- 6:29Speaker 2: We thought you were dead?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Oh, isn't that the old uh? The old grave uh?
- 6:35Speaker 1: Like the old grave worker type thing and where a
- 6:40Speaker 1: body gets buried and then they tie a string or
- 6:43Speaker 1: something somewhere in the hole and then there's a bell
- 6:46Speaker 1: that sits on top of the grave for just in
- 6:49Speaker 1: case they wake up after being buried and be like
- 6:52Speaker 1: little hell please.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah. And there have been instances, I believe there was
- 6:56Speaker 4: like one or two where the bell rung and then
- 7:00Speaker 4: had to get this person out of the ground.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Another ritual sees the destruction of a papal symbol known
- 7:10Speaker 1: as the annulus piscatoris or episcatory ring. I feel like
- 7:15Speaker 1: they should have renamed that, but whatever. The ring represents
- 7:18Speaker 1: the first Pope, Saint Peter, who was a fisherman. Usually,
- 7:21Speaker 1: the remnants of the destroyed ring are used to make
- 7:24Speaker 1: a new one for a late pope's successor. This is
- 7:28Speaker 1: just lord of the ring stuff.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Now that's as precious.
- 7:40Speaker 1: When the late Pope Francis assumed the papacy, is it papacy,
- 7:44Speaker 1: papacy papacy In twenty thirteen, he opted for a ring
- 7:50Speaker 1: made of gilded silver rather than the traditional ring of
- 7:53Speaker 1: yellow gold. Just like you said, there tree, there you go.
- 7:56Speaker 1: This right includes certain steps leading up to the rings
- 7:58Speaker 1: being destroyed. See this is Lord of the Rings. I
- 8:02Speaker 1: feel like this Pope's death is being directed by Peter Jackson.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Be really interesting though, if the Pope gets to the
- 8:12Speaker 1: gates and St. Peter's St. Peter's standing there with a
- 8:16Speaker 1: big staff and says you shall not pass, and would
- 8:22Speaker 1: he be shocked? Like really, not even me. The destruction
- 8:28Speaker 1: symbolizes the end of a pope's rule, with the creation
- 8:30Speaker 1: of a new ring representing a new pope, assuming the
- 8:36Speaker 1: papacy the new ring to rule them all is my assumption.
- 8:40Speaker 3: That's I mean, it's, you know, the the the person
- 8:47Speaker 3: you want to be pope is the person who doesn't
- 8:49Speaker 3: want to be pope. And but the problem is, I
- 8:53Speaker 3: mean it's it's as much as they want to think
- 8:55Speaker 3: it's a holy process. I mean, it's a bunch of
- 8:59Speaker 3: you know, power hungry cardinals that all, you know, jockeying
- 9:04Speaker 3: for position.
- 9:05Speaker 1: To roomful of the dude swearing up down left right side.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But I don't want to beat a pulp not at all.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Or no, I don't know what to all.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Right, one of you's got at least say yes, well,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and that you've got to say all right, I'll do it.
- 9:18Speaker 3: That That is the fascinating thing. The thing about Pope
- 9:20Speaker 3: Francis is he came, like to the story, he was
- 9:27Speaker 3: in the process of resigning when Benedict he wanted to
- 9:32Speaker 3: be transferred back to it from Argentina.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I believe m h.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He wanted to be you know, basically demoted and not
- 9:41Speaker 3: be a cardinal anymore, or basically go back to Argentina
- 9:44Speaker 3: when Benedict was resigning, and Benedict was like.
- 9:47Speaker 2: You know, you need to be pope and he didn't
- 9:50Speaker 2: want it.
- 9:51Speaker 1: See that tells me that the three taps to the
- 9:53Speaker 1: forehead are not gentle taps. He knows he's going to
- 9:57Speaker 1: get smacked in the head with a silver hammer three
- 9:59Speaker 1: times and he doesn't want to have to endure that.
- 10:06Speaker 4: I think it'll be dead. I don't think that's the
- 10:11Speaker 4: It's just one of those like well, like you was saying,
- 10:13Speaker 4: like some people that that's why they vote, that's why
- 10:16Speaker 4: they vote because you don't have a choice. Then so
- 10:19Speaker 4: if if it's a unanimous vote, then it's you, even
- 10:22Speaker 4: if you don't want it.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Even even if you're trying to take the Nazi way
- 10:26Speaker 1: out and run to South America, the Catholic Church will
- 10:30Speaker 1: find you. Uh. And you know what, maybe maybe the
- 10:32Speaker 1: three smacks to the head with the silver hammer. Look,
- 10:36Speaker 1: it clearly works. Maybe it's not only a tool to see.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Maybe it's not only a test to see if you
- 10:43Speaker 1: are in fact dead. But if you wake up after
- 10:46Speaker 1: the first or second, then then you get two more,
- 10:49Speaker 1: just to make sure the job is finished. Because we've
- 10:51Speaker 1: already started up the smoke and the fire, and we're
- 10:54Speaker 1: already printing out little pieces of paper for ballots.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I mean, maybe we're overthinking it. Maybe they just like
- 11:02Speaker 2: the game of.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Whack a Pope, the best of the State Fair games.

- 12:05Speaker 1: the Treehouse Show. I'm Dan, He's Trade. That's Roger. There
- 12:08Speaker 1: is Jerry, speaking of fun summer vacations. I don't know
- 12:12Speaker 1: if you can find anyone that had more fun last
- 12:15Speaker 1: week than this guy. A personal injury attorney, was arrested
- 12:20Speaker 1: last week after police say he was downtown yelling at
- 12:23Speaker 1: the top of his lungs without any clothes on. Is
- 12:27Speaker 1: anyone else hoping this was Jim Adler or is it
- 12:30Speaker 1: just me?
- 12:31Speaker 4: I was gonna say he was waving around the Texas Hammer.
- 12:39Speaker 1: That's the first thing I thought of.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Man.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I was like, oh, please tell me that Jim Adler
- 12:43Speaker 1: went on vacation. This happened in Charleston, South Carolina. It
- 12:52Speaker 1: was not Jim Adler. Instead, it was William Mullens McLeod Junior.
- 12:58Speaker 1: He is a Charleston personal injury attorney. He was arrested
- 13:01Speaker 1: after police say he was downtown yelling at the top
- 13:03Speaker 1: of his lungs without any clothes on. He was charged
- 13:06Speaker 1: with public disorderly conduct and booked at the Al Cannona
- 13:10Speaker 1: Tention Center early in the morning. An incident report from
- 13:14Speaker 1: Charleston Police states an officer was in the area when
- 13:17Speaker 1: they observed McLeod walking along the battery screaming Wednesday morning.
- 13:21Speaker 1: He was wearing all his underwear and shoes. During the incident,
- 13:25Speaker 1: they confronted him and began and he began rambling incoherently.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I'm still not so sure this is not Jim Adler.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Half the time you can't understand what he's saying anyway,
- 13:34Speaker 1: But you also have.
- 13:35Speaker 4: To realize, like he was just an underwear and shoes.
- 13:37Speaker 4: That means he took his shoes off to take his
- 13:40Speaker 4: pants off and then put his shoes back on.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I understand that, I too have to.
- 13:47Speaker 7: Maybe wherever he was, that's just all he put on.
- 13:50Speaker 7: He just reached over and grabbed his shoes.
- 13:52Speaker 4: And yeah, you know, maybe he lives in one of
- 13:56Speaker 4: the high rises there, and was like, you know what,
- 13:58Speaker 4: I am hammered. I am I'm the Texas hammered, and
- 14:04Speaker 4: I have to go for a walk right now, and
- 14:07Speaker 4: I need to scream.
- 14:09Speaker 2: And I can't do that in my house.
- 14:13Speaker 1: I'm Jim Adler.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Ohs, I got so drunk.
- 14:16Speaker 6: I run out of my hotel wearing nothing but shoes
- 14:18Speaker 6: and mondies. Now you know why they call me the
- 14:22Speaker 6: Texas Hammer. I was actually on the run from a
- 14:27Speaker 6: big truck. They saw me naked on top of a
- 14:33Speaker 6: big truck and they said get off, and I said,
- 14:35Speaker 6: I'm trying.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I'm Jim Adler.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Have you ever been hitting the head by a helicopter
- 14:46Speaker 6: or is it just my wing? He's swinging round and
- 14:48Speaker 6: round from the top of this truck.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Hitting the head by a helicopter?
- 14:58Speaker 1: Okay, have you ever been hitting the head but my hammer?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Call me Jim Adler.
- 15:06Speaker 6: I'll get you fifty million dollars in your pocket. Speaking
- 15:10Speaker 6: of pockets, can I have your pants? I seem to
- 15:15Speaker 6: have misplaced mine.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Do you make fun of your son Bill and call
- 15:23Speaker 2: him the ball peen hammer? How do you know his nickname?
- 15:31Speaker 6: That's exactly what I call my boy. He's the ball
- 15:33Speaker 6: peen hammer. It's just tiny and stupid. No one knows
- 15:41Speaker 6: what to do with it, just like a ball peen hammer.
- 15:43Speaker 2: That's my bully. He can't get his own job. He's
- 15:47Speaker 2: got to be on the truck with me. He d moron.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I that he would be a rubber mallet. Uh. He's
- 16:00Speaker 2: got that little round head. Yeah, with the helmet.
- 16:09Speaker 1: So he's a lawyer and slow.
- 16:12Speaker 6: You know it's because every time he shoot one of
- 16:14Speaker 6: these commercials on top of a truck, he keeps falling off.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Takes like a hundred takes.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Every time he's fallen off one hundred times. I don't
- 16:27Speaker 2: want him representing me.
- 16:30Speaker 6: It's more of a make a wish attorney at this point.
- 16:36Speaker 6: He's never lead counsel, just more special counsel.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And for those wondering, this is the day the Treehouse
- 16:48Speaker 1: got sued by the.

- 17:37Speaker 1: but here we go. It's time for believe it or
- 17:42Speaker 1: not inside the Treehouse. Inside the Treehouse today, it is
- 17:46Speaker 1: time for.
- 17:46Speaker 8: Believe it or not.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'm going to read you, guys, a statement from a
- 17:51Speaker 1: news story, and you tell me whether or not. Well,
- 17:54Speaker 1: you believe it all right?
- 17:55Speaker 2: So here we go believe it or not?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Inside the treehouse to day. Archaeologists have unearthed mysterious enormous
- 18:08Speaker 1: shoes from an ancient Roman fort. Archaeologists have unearthed mysterious
- 18:16Speaker 1: enormous shoes from an ancient Roman fort.
- 18:19Speaker 8: Do you believe it or not?
- 18:23Speaker 1: Archaeologists have unearthed mysterious enormous shoes from an ancient Roman fort.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Do you believe it or not? I believe it? Okay, Jerry?
- 18:32Speaker 2: Do you believe it or not?
- 18:34Speaker 7: You know what, I'll take the other one.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Okay, Jerry, you are wrong, raj you are correct. You
- 18:43Speaker 1: must believe it. Archaeologists have in fact unearthed mysterious enormous
- 18:51Speaker 1: shoes from an ancient Roman fort.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Who hasn't shock Banged?
- 19:00Speaker 1: I had no idea he was an immortal, of course.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Is Researchers were shocked to discover a number of enormous
- 19:12Speaker 1: leather shoes that are significantly larger than normal during recent
- 19:16Speaker 1: digs in northern England, and they don't know why they're
- 19:19Speaker 1: so big. The oversized shoes are from Magna, a Roman
- 19:23Speaker 1: era fort along Hadrian's Wall which is a seventy three
- 19:26Speaker 1: mile stone wall that delineated the northwest edge of the
- 19:29Speaker 1: Roman Empire and was constructed starting in one twenty two CE.
- 19:34Speaker 1: The Roman Army Museum states that the fort was in
- 19:38Speaker 1: use from eighty five until one twenty two CE. Real quick,
- 19:43Speaker 1: what does c E stand for?
- 19:45Speaker 2: Common Era? Is that?
- 19:48Speaker 4: Just?
- 19:49Speaker 1: Is that woke initials for.
- 19:52Speaker 7: After for eight basically yeah, and then BCE before common era?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah? Got it?
- 19:59Speaker 1: Okay, anyway, I'm just curious. Eight enormous leather shoes, eight
- 20:05Speaker 1: of them, each greater than eleven point eight inches long,
- 20:09Speaker 1: have been discovered by archaeologists since May. Currently, about twenty
- 20:13Speaker 1: five percent of all shoes discovered at the site so
- 20:16Speaker 1: far are extra large specimens. While investigating a defensive ditch
- 20:21Speaker 1: where Roman troops were also known to poop, researchers found
- 20:25Speaker 1: the first enormous shoe. According to Christina Kilgrove of Live Science,
- 20:31Speaker 1: the sole of that shoe measured twelve point six inches,
- 20:34Speaker 1: or about the same length as a men's fourteen in
- 20:37Speaker 1: the United States. After continuing their excavation, archaeologists discovered thirty
- 20:43Speaker 1: three more pairs of shoes in various sizes, some of
- 20:46Speaker 1: which seem to have been designed for young people. They
- 20:49Speaker 1: even discovered a shoe that is twelve point eight inches long.
- 20:55Speaker 1: The soles are all composed of thinctionates of cowhide leather
- 20:58Speaker 1: that are secured by iron hobneys. Because to the low
- 21:03Speaker 1: oxygen content of the local soil, the shoes have remained
- 21:05Speaker 1: intact for almost two thousand years. Now, why some of
- 21:10Speaker 1: these shoes are so big is a mystery to researchers.
- 21:15Speaker 1: My question to you is is there something super mysterious
- 21:20Speaker 1: going on or did the Roman Army have a special
- 21:22Speaker 1: clown regiment.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Or they just got to keep digging and fund of basketball.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Eventually the court it was the Roman Globetrotters. I'd watch
- 21:39Speaker 1: them every day with metal Lark Aurelius.
- 21:45Speaker 8: Always battling the Jews, the little white guys that just
- 21:54Speaker 8: couldn't keep up.
- 21:58Speaker 2: That's their Washington general.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I didn't know the Romans at a basketball team.
- 22:07Speaker 2: That's pretty awesome.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Good for that, yeah, and and and and the Starter
- 22:11Speaker 4: League because they had shoes for younger kids too.
- 22:14Speaker 1: It's good to know that a development league, ye summer league. Man,
- 22:23Speaker 1: what what couldn't the Romans do.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Keep that bitch from burning down? That's what they couldn't
- 22:33Speaker 2: move well.
- 22:37Speaker 1: You can't win them all. Sometimes the little generals get you.
