- 1:33pretty much yeah
- 1:35And it all started, you know, we met
- 1:39over 30 years ago back at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff you were
- 1:43Communications major or was a music
- 1:54Yeah, I know that's what I used to see you on both sides I'd see
- 1:59You know playing the piano over on the music side then I see you over in the class with us
- 2:04So I was like well, he probably has a dual, you know major
- 2:10Major music
- 2:12Plagas some apply
- 2:15And then I dropped out
- 2:24Okay, you kind of like took a shortcut yeah, I guess because you already have some experience
- 2:31You had been playing before you made it, you know arrived to college, right? I
- 2:36Was playing trombone
- 2:38Trombone player out of high school. I'm John Marshall high school under the direction of Elinor Vanden and
- 2:47Got a Scottish show from
- 2:50University of Arkansas, of course and
- 2:53I fly knowledge
- 2:56Wasn't a great reader
- 2:58But I had a great year
- 3:01Yeah, you know, I
- 3:03And I was in class and one of them dropping
- 3:13Wow
- 3:15Amazing
- 3:16UAPB wasn't amazing and that experience that whole thing was amazing
- 3:20What was one of your fondest memories as a student at UAPB?
- 3:25HBCU
- 3:27One of my fondest memories is a bunch if I could 10.1
- 3:34Mm-hmm. I would say the band that we played in polo
- 3:40The band polo yes
- 3:45Planning the band polo
- 3:48Who are some of the members who were they help me remember Larry?
- 3:53Larry
- 3:55There and we had Greg Sainz
- 4:01You remember Greg yeah, Greg saying we had Lamar little
- 4:10What's we have Greg
- 4:16Kind of
- 4:18And we had more phase on keys
- 4:21Okay, we had a bunch of guys
- 4:25We had about 12 guys in the band and still for it. Let's get through it. Yes
- 4:32Dumb and off was a part of the band
- 4:36And that was probably my biggest my likes because we did a concert on campus
- 4:41For Roger Trout, you open up a Roger and that yeah
- 4:45And that was like huge
- 4:47That was really huge because I remember people talking he's like they're gonna blow up
- 4:52They're about to get a big record deal in the next big thing. I remember
- 4:59We showed out that
- 5:03Amazing and Larry Briggs now he's one of the lead singers for the the temptations now the temptations today, right?
- 5:12Only he left
- 5:15Okay, okay
- 5:20Okay, okay, I mean but you guys have done so much with your music careers. I
- 5:27It's just amazing. I could go on and on and on just you know
- 5:32Talking about all your success
- 5:33But kind of key is in on how did you how did you get that foothold on me after you finish your APB?
- 5:40graduated
- 5:42What was that big break that kind of launched that music career for you?
- 5:47Have you talking about breaks? It was probably
- 5:52Doing the remix
- 5:54Plan on different records
- 5:58As a session board and I've got probably
- 6:09From there, you know
- 6:13More gigs
- 6:22I mean, who did you meet who would you run into and say hey man?
- 6:25We like what you're doing. We want you to join us on whatever, you know, you know
- 6:34I don't remember if I did
- 6:42I did
- 6:44Well, you know Chicago, yes, I work on a lot of stuff
- 6:55Some dance music artists that will come to town Robin s crystal waters. Oh
- 7:04So yeah, it's like the 90s like almost like a blur
- 7:12Yeah
- 7:17Yeah, but but it was in 2004 when when you really I mean I see all your your your
- 7:23Plax your wards on the wall behind you and it was to my knowledge
- 7:282004 is when you worked on one of Janet Jackson single remixes
- 7:33Yeah, and also Beyonce's biggest selling single crazy in love
- 7:38Yeah, yeah, we are we did that no for and
- 7:43That was a remix
- 7:45Something that we I know we do any way play on records
- 7:50And go home like I was doing my job at 230 as a teacher
- 7:55and then we were I would go to the studio and
- 7:59From the corporate studio, I would stay there and work and play on different songs
- 8:05But you never know what song is gonna do
- 8:07What?
- 8:08Yeah, you know, I can give you my name right now and find records
- 8:19You just don't know what record is gonna be what you know, so I was happy and thankful
- 8:25Cuz he could have my pardon on my recent you could have gotten
- 8:29Anybody
- 8:31You know, but he waited on me
- 8:35No, that blessing was definitely meant for you. Yeah
- 8:41But they say go get it go get your blessing
- 8:48Okay, Mary Mary
- 8:52Yeah, man, that's amazing and so from there, I guess it just took off that I start seeing you know seeing you all over the
- 9:00You know Facebook doing different things
- 9:03year year like international music composer in Dubai and
- 9:09Tell us about that Rob. Tell us about that experience
- 9:12that experiences in
- 9:162018 I
- 9:19Met some guys on that
- 9:24They actually they were gonna move because the Gandhi murder
- 9:26And
- 9:28They asked me it was called full
- 9:32And actually I like to come over and work on their phone
- 9:37They heard my material
- 9:41We got together and
- 9:44from there I
- 9:46Was on the plane
- 9:50It took about four years
- 9:52Oh, yeah, about four years before we actually got it
- 9:57finalized
- 9:59So we talked and chat
- 10:03Get the Skype thing
- 10:06And
- 10:09Last time correct a year a year 2016
- 10:15So what's 16 happened we developed
- 10:18a conversation
- 10:21we developed
- 10:23schemes for the film what kind of music and
- 10:27From there
- 10:31And I went over there do what I have to do
- 10:35But I'll tell you
- 10:38What I was happy about I didn't have to do
- 10:42Indian
- 10:44You know, I could have done it but they wanted an American school
- 10:53Right, so with that
- 10:59You to the table exactly
- 11:05Was infuse a lot of their culture into the American
- 11:11And
- 11:13It's only work
- 11:17I was looking at some of your clips out, you know on YouTube and I got one right here that I want to
- 11:23Play for the for the viewers. Let me I'm sorry about that. It's never
- 11:29Okay, yeah, I want to play
- 11:32One of the singles that we had kind of briefly talked about
- 11:34You know before we went online and it's called Dubai forever and it's beautiful
- 12:04Oh
- 12:34Oh
- 12:49You know, will you put that flavor in?
- 12:51Oh, that's really nice. Yeah, I was a promo over there
- 13:04Well, that's what I
- 13:08Resort that's why it's like 60 seconds to a minute because it's for a commercial
- 13:14Oh
- 13:16Man, what is that like man you got to stay over there for how long
- 13:22The first time for about
- 13:28And then the second time I just
- 13:34I can look at the half too much like that
- 13:38So I know the city quite well
- 13:40Yeah, that's a beautiful place. It is really beautiful. Yes
- 13:47And you stand so busy these days and I know some of the
- 13:51Success your busy schedule comes from your publicist who want to give a shout out to her
- 13:57Miss Desiree
- 13:58Yes Desiree Benson. Let's give a
- 14:01Yeah, let's let's everyone see all the special ladies. Well, these are your two favorites in your life right about now
- 14:13Yes, and of course
- 14:20Gotta give a shout out to mom. I know she's you're welcome. I know she's very proud of all your success. Yeah, she's my biggest friend
- 14:28I know how she's doing. She's good. She's good. I think I talked to her just before I made dinner
- 14:38Oh, okay. So you cook too?
- 14:43Wow, that's good. You're making me hungry. Yeah
- 14:47Yeah, Rob, you have been so busy with with so much going on
- 14:53Do you ever just kind of think back to the first song you composed or
- 14:56I think back to my childhood
- 15:00to your childhood a lot of times and
- 15:04My mom used to call me her little Bert back right back right
- 15:08and the rest is because he just passed like about a month ago. A little less than a month ago
- 15:13and um
- 15:16Playing a style I played the car
- 15:19as a kid and um, I was just trying to write a song
- 15:22I don't know what I was doing
- 15:25And I was trying to write lyrics and then I was going stuff wasn't making any sense
- 15:31And um, I reflect back on both
- 15:35I reflect back on
- 15:38how I
- 15:40taught myself to play the car
- 15:42You know how the concerts and many concerts I've played
- 15:47or and everything like that
- 15:49I just I just I think back and reflect and all those things and
- 15:54I build that up until like a big ball for one of the go back and put my ball in the ball and pull that out
- 16:00Yeah, and and like kind of like a crystal ball
- 16:03Watch my life
- 16:05before all this
- 16:08stuff is happening now
- 16:12Do you remember the where did you first record your very first studio do you remember?
- 16:16Oh
- 16:18Yeah, I mean I'm a 10
- 16:22This is a story
- 16:24For real for real. Um, it was a studio in Chicago called
- 16:28P
- 16:30S
- 16:32Surround
- 16:34A lot of the old heads here know
- 16:37Paul surrounds
- 16:40But um
- 16:42Somewhere like an Indiana in Chicago
- 16:44So
- 16:46What a new McCormick place he is now, right?
- 16:49My cousin
- 16:51Who was a drummer
- 16:53exception at
- 16:55well
- 16:57You know great drummer and he played in the gospel. Right?
- 17:02so
- 17:03The gospel was one to the studio
- 17:07So they say my cousin's right. I'm going for school. You want to go out like storage? Yeah
- 17:11Yeah
- 17:14Kids, you know, we're getting the power to go to the studio. We go to ps ps
- 17:21I don't think he was there
- 17:23But but going into the studio for the first time to see his consoles
- 17:28You know all these tracks and drums and guitars are not button
- 17:34They're fascinating at like 12 or so
- 17:37I'm involved. You know, I think it's like 13
- 17:41And I saw this and I got I was like, wow, this is great, you know, you know and
- 17:47Millie, I tell you
- 17:49That was my cousin's that wasn't mine because he played
- 17:54You know, I just went with him and when I got gone
- 18:00Tell you
- 18:01I cut my first record
- 18:04Wow
- 18:05That was and and I got a chance and paul of it and I
- 18:10And I got a chance to express and tell him I said man, I was about the 13th
- 18:15This is a studio. I came to visit
- 18:19And he shook my hand and gave me a little and
- 18:22If I felt real good about that because it was a session
- 18:29Where it was like r&b blues
- 18:32track I
- 18:34And um, that was the first time I reported when it's to use that particular students
- 18:45Yeah, that's history. That is history. Yeah
- 18:50Man, I thought I'd go back to the studio as a kid
- 18:54Yeah, and you have a you have a daughter speaking of kids, right? You have a daughter. Yes. Yes
- 19:04Yes, is she is she's a musician a singer or like you
- 19:09Theater theater she got the theater side. Okay
- 19:16Wow
- 19:18She's an actress or she teaches
- 19:20Is
- 19:23Okay
- 19:26backstage
- 19:34Yeah, of course, of course
- 19:36That is wonderful. So I know your publisher is not here. But is it safe for me to ask
- 19:43What's next for rob diggy?
- 19:46Yeah, I say for you that
- 19:48I'm my own PR
- 19:51She's
- 19:55What's next? I've done a couple of projects
- 20:00Things that I might have to revisit
- 20:03I'm working on a documentary on LA. Well, I just finished it. I'm talking about called golden heart
- 20:12Yep, it's narrated by Danny Glover
- 20:14And it's written by my wonderful cousin Frank underwears younger the brother of Blair Underwood
- 20:22uh-huh
- 20:25Lawson Jacobson part of this
- 20:28Kathleen Bradley is Parker
- 20:33So we all pitched in
- 20:35together for
- 20:37My producing partner
- 20:39I can't wait to see it. It's it's a political
- 20:46Documentary I would say I guess about um
- 20:51Diane what watch them who was the one congresswoman in the 80s
- 20:58Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So with that said
- 21:00Um, Malina got together and where the people and put together this documentary and um, Howard Hughes also
- 21:10Yeah, so we're getting together so so with that
- 21:14Another project. I just finished called um, lipstick
- 21:20Yeah, lipstick is pretty cool. It's a thriller
- 21:23Yeah, and I and I did that
- 21:25I
- 21:28And then I have um
- 21:31The unseen
