Transcript
- 0:13Music Welcome back to rise and thrive with Doctor J Nicole the
- 0:20space where we rise in faith and thrive and purpose.
- 0:24Today's episode is very special because it brings together an
- 0:28entire social media series into one grounded conversation.
- 0:33This is about 2026 being the year of you minding your
- 0:39business. And this is not in a dismissive
- 0:41way, not in a stay in your land kind of way, but in a deeply
- 0:46healing, faith aligned, intentional, emotionally mature
- 0:50way. This episode is for the people
- 0:54who are tired. Tired of carrying things that
- 0:57aren't theirs, tired of managing emotions that don't belong to
- 1:01them. Tired of feeling responsible for
- 1:05everything and everyone. If you are preparing for a
- 1:10breakthrough year, this conversation is for you.
- 1:13So let's first get into this. What does minding your business
- 1:17really look like? So minding your business is not
- 1:20about disengagement, appearing aloof, being unbothered.
- 1:25It's really and truly about alignment.
- 1:27From a therapeutic lens, minding your business is emotional
- 1:31regulation. It's knowing where you end and
- 1:35where someone else begins. From a faith perspective, it's
- 1:40secure attachment to God. It's trusting that God can
- 1:44handle outcomes without you micromanaging them.
- 1:48And when we don't mind our business, we're usually over
- 1:51functioning, overcommitting, people pleasing, anticipating
- 1:58reactions, managing moods and emotions, balancing or excuse
- 2:02me, bracing for disappointment and your body, it pays the
- 2:08price. Here's the simplest example.
- 2:11When you stop managing other people's emotions, your nervous
- 2:15system finally gets to rest. It's not selfish, it's wisdom.
- 2:20Now, why does 2026 require a different version of you?
- 2:25Well, Simply put, you cannot go into 2026 the same way you came
- 2:30into 2025, OK? And you cannot enter into a
- 2:33breakthrough year with survival habits. 2026 does not need a
- 2:39more productive version of you and needs a more regulated
- 2:42version of you. A version of you that knows when
- 2:45to say no without guilt. A version of you that does not
- 2:49confuse urgency with importance. There is a difference.
- 2:53Breakthroughs are not about effort alone.
- 2:56They're about identity shifts. Some of what you tolerated in
- 3:00past seasons was because you didn't yet know what was
- 3:03available to you. But once you know better, you're
- 3:06responsible for choosing better and doing better.
- 3:10So why is it hard to mind your business?
- 3:14I know we all at some point or another have struggled with this
- 3:19and some of us are chronic non minding our business.
- 3:24Some of us are chronically minding the business of others
- 3:27like it's a paid job. But let's normalize this.
- 3:31If you struggle to mind your business, it's not because
- 3:34you're controlling your dramatic.
- 3:36It's often because you learn this early in life as a tool for
- 3:40survival, right? So you learned early to over
- 3:43function. You were emotionally
- 3:45parentified, so you had to grow up more quickly.
- 3:47You had to take on responsibility in the home.
- 3:50You didn't get to just be a child.
- 3:53You learn to scan environments for safety, to identify threats.
- 3:56You learned that being useful meant you were connected.
- 4:01That was a way to get favor sometimes too for people.
- 4:05And so you take it with you because it worked in that
- 4:10season. What you also need to recognize
- 4:12too is that these are trauma informed adaptations.
- 4:16Yep, I said it. But what kept you safe once can
- 4:20keep you stuck now. And healing doesn't shame those
- 4:24patterns. Healing updates them, right?
- 4:27So we can take a look at it and recognize that we need to
- 4:30change. And like, yes, it was helpful
- 4:32before and prior seasons, but now it's hurting you.
- 4:37It might even be hurting people you love.
- 4:39No, you're allowed to release any type of coping skills that
- 4:44no longer serve your adult life. You don't have to keep doing it
- 4:48just because it's what you've always been doing.
- 4:50And I want to encourage you to be curious, to think about what
- 4:55do you need and from there to develop some new, healthier
- 5:00coping skills, OK, Minding your business and friendships.
- 5:06This, this is this is tough, OK? Because friendships is where
- 5:10things get entangled. And sometimes when we don't mind
- 5:13our business, our friendships suffer.
- 5:15Or sometimes they just break down.
- 5:18So when you don't mind your business and friendships, you
- 5:21can become the emotional storage unit.
- 5:25You're the one that everyone goes to.
- 5:27They pile their stuff on. You know, this might be the
- 5:29strong friend. They forget to ask you how
- 5:32you're doing, or they call you when they need things and when
- 5:35they're done. OK, well, I got to go.
- 5:38And they haven't even asked you about you, right?
- 5:41But this is where you also got to speak up.
- 5:43And you can't allow people to do that.
- 5:44That's where boundaries come into play.
- 5:46But minding your business allows friendships to be balanced and
- 5:51in some cases rebalance because it's natural that in different
- 5:54seasons, there are going to be different levels of need for
- 5:58support, whether you know, whatever the support looks like
- 6:01at that time. And so that doesn't mean the
- 6:03moment they need more from you. I'm the emotional storage unit.
- 6:06I'm not saying that we have to walk the middle path.
- 6:09We're not going to do the black and white all or nothing here,
- 6:12OK? But just leave room and like,
- 6:14pay attention. Have those conversations now.
- 6:19Romantic relationships and dating.
- 6:22This is another place of minding your business is hard because
- 6:25it's a whole lot of y'all out there playing detective on
- 6:28people's social media profiles and coming up with stories and
- 6:31conclusions about things. And sometimes you're right.
- 6:34However, you're not minding your business.
- 6:37You're not allowing it to unfold organically.
- 6:40You're not getting context from the source.
- 6:43We have to be vulnerable and have conversations and ask hard
- 6:48questions. But again, that's one of those
- 6:51outdated coping skills. Remember we talked about trying
- 6:54to identify threats When you go digging in people's social
- 6:56media, that's what you're doing, right?
- 6:59It's an attempt to keep you safe.
- 7:01But sometimes you might be keeping yourself out of a
- 7:04potentially healthy relationship.
- 7:05So minding your business. In dating, it looks like
- 7:08observing behaviors. Notice us have behaviors, not
- 7:12just social media patterns because they're a real person.
- 7:17We're not interpreting and decoding potential or text
- 7:22messages, their words and splitting them and looking for
- 7:26all this other meeting. Just ask the question you need
- 7:28to ask and a lot of times is it your filter that's requiring the
- 7:33decode, requiring the decoding could be you.
- 7:37Also, we want to make sure we're not trying to manage the
- 7:41emotional emotional momentum. Let things progress organically
- 7:47and naturally. And the only thing you can
- 7:49really and truly regulate is yourself.
- 7:53So if something's happening and you don't like the pace at which
- 7:56the relationship is moving emotionally, say something.
- 8:01Hey, I'm really enjoying getting to know you, but this part feels
- 8:06a little bit fast. It will feel better if right
- 8:10instead of doing you doing too much.
- 8:13They have no idea what they've done wrong.
- 8:15And I think we all, you know, we can benefit from the feedback
- 8:18and dating because we've none of us have done this life thing
- 8:20before. This is the first time you're
- 8:23doing this first time you're dating that person doesn't
- 8:26matter how many relationships you've had.
- 8:29And also we're not working so hard to force clarity.
- 8:33I do want you to, however, be curious, ask the questions, but
- 8:38if it's too much work to get it, that means a person doesn't want
- 8:40it to be clear. And so then this may be where
- 8:43you say, hey, I really value clarity and understanding.
- 8:47So I don't make up stories or fill in the blanks.
- 8:50And that means a lot to me. And if you are not able, if
- 8:53you're not able to, you know, express that, then maybe we're
- 8:57not aligned or maybe we we should take a beat, you know,
- 9:02because sometimes people don't want to give you clarity for a
- 9:05reason, because it benefits them for you to be unclear about
- 9:09whatever their thing is. And you want to date with
- 9:13discernment. And this requires, you know,
- 9:15stillness and ease. Now minding your business
- 9:19professionally, now this is you could be an entrepreneur, but
- 9:23minding your business still matters, right?
- 9:26So professionally, this looks like we're not absorbing any
- 9:30workplace chaos. Stay out of it.
- 9:33That's not your business. It doesn't matter who's doing
- 9:36what. What happened when did you see
- 9:38this? Because yeah, it's always going
- 9:41to be something because messy humans are involved.
- 9:43We're just messy, y'all. But every day, every moment is a
- 9:47new opportunity to try to be better.
- 9:50And a great place to start is being mindful of what you're
- 9:54taking in. So avoid that chaos.
- 9:56And that trickles right over into protecting your creativity.
- 10:01Creativity, all of us. Let's be clear, we are created
- 10:04in God's image. And the first thing that we know
- 10:07that God did was create, created the heavens and earth, right?
- 10:10And he took us through the whole process.
- 10:12So we all are creatives, so you have to protect that.
- 10:17And so minding your business is protecting that creative energy.
- 10:21So you're going to stay out of unnecessary drama.
- 10:24We're not going to overwork to prove our worth or our value.
- 10:28We're not going to go out of our way, like overextend to connect
- 10:33with people, to try to get people to like us.
- 10:35I'm not saying don't talk to people.
- 10:37I'm not saying don't form relationships.
- 10:39But you know, when you're Spearing your energy, if it's
- 10:42feeling rushed, if it's feeling pressured, or if it's just like
- 10:46so much energy and it's taking away from you doing your actual
- 10:49job, you are not minding your business.
- 10:53And I want you to know that peace is also a professional
- 10:56skill, OK? OK, so let me give you some
- 10:58practical tools that you can actually use.
- 11:00OK? So the best one and the easiest
- 11:041, you can do this literally right now.
- 11:07That's the ownership question. Is this mine?
- 11:10That's it. Is this mine?
- 11:13It's likely not. And just because you may have
- 11:16the solution, the idea to address whatever The thing is,
- 11:19it does not mean that you should because then you are actively
- 11:24showing, you're actively signing up for a task.
- 11:30You're like, well, I just wanted to share.
- 11:32They're like, oh, well, great, you do it.
- 11:33You got the vision. They want the person with the
- 11:35vision to do it. So if you don't have the
- 11:37capacity to do it and you don't really have a desire, then
- 11:41don't. OK, is this my?
- 11:44I also want you to work on those boundary breaths, right where
- 11:47when you inhale, you're reminding yourself it's not
- 11:51mine. And you exhale, you say release.
- 11:55So you're releasing the thing that is not yours and you can
- 11:58name it. It's important to name it
- 12:00because then it sends your brain the message to not run that
- 12:03play. It's not mine.
- 12:05I release, fill in the blank. OK, Now this next one, the
- 12:11sacred no. And that's looks like saying I
- 12:14don't have the capacity for that doesn't mean that you don't
- 12:18really want to, doesn't mean that you don't like the idea or
- 12:21you're not excited about the invitation.
- 12:25It simply means I don't have the capacity for that.
- 12:29And you can do a number of things at this point.
- 12:32It could just be a no, I don't have the capacity for it.
- 12:34It could be AI don't have a capacity for it right now.
- 12:38Can I check back with you on Friday to see where you are?
- 12:41Or you say my schedule looks better on Thursday for this
- 12:45thing. And then you've allowed them to
- 12:48decide if they want to move on and find someone else to help or
- 12:52if they're going to abandon the project altogether.
- 12:54So something else to really be curious about.
- 12:58When people are asking things of you, sometimes they're they're
- 13:03automatically banking on you saying yes, they asked you
- 13:06because they thought you would say yes.
- 13:08Makes sense, right? And sometimes they just want to
- 13:11pass it over to you to get it done.
- 13:14So I know I had that experience prior to being in
- 13:18entrepreneurship where things kept getting placed on my plate.
- 13:22Things were being asked of me. And you can do some of these
- 13:26things for a short period of time.
- 13:28And so in some of the instances where I said yes and I did did
- 13:32well with the yes because it was a time bound thing.
- 13:35But then it became an expectation that I always do
- 13:39this thing. And I had to have a very frank
- 13:42conversation with my supervisor at the time, who was like vice
- 13:47president level right to say, hey, this is not sustainable
- 13:52long term. So I need your help to tell me
- 13:56what you'd like me to prioritize because I can't do it all.
- 14:01And when we initially discussed this, this is what we said.
- 14:05And so it opened up this conversation and it turned into,
- 14:08well, what do you need? And then we were able to
- 14:11negotiate and I was able to hand some things back or such and
- 14:15such can do that, OK, Figure out someone else for to do these
- 14:19other things so that I could focus on the thing that was
- 14:22truly important. And all too often, many of us
- 14:25are running ourselves into the ground rather than engaging in
- 14:29the sacred no, or it's cousin, negotiating.
- 14:35So sometimes you have to negotiate to mind your business.
- 14:37OK. And then next, the pause.
- 14:41There's so much value in a pause to take a beat.
- 14:45It's an opportunity for you to catch your breath.
- 14:48It's an opportunity for you to think, an opportunity to
- 14:52regulate your emotions, to allow some breaths in right, 'cause
- 14:57when we're too worked up, we become dysregulated in our brain
- 15:02does not function as logically if we're emotionally
- 15:05dysregulated. So take a moment.
- 15:08Sometimes you don't have to respond to that e-mail right
- 15:10away. You don't have to respond to the
- 15:12text immediately. You don't have to call back the
- 15:17very next second. I always recommend to clients to
- 15:22think about what their current reality supports, not what
- 15:25people are expecting of them. What does my current reality
- 15:29support And to go from there because that allows for you to
- 15:33be able to operate authentically.
- 15:37OK, so these are not just tools, but these are new habits for
- 15:43safety, to help keep your nervous system regulated, to
- 15:48help you show up as a better version of you and for people to
- 15:52receive and experience this better version of you.
- 15:55And when you mind your business, believe it or not, you have a
- 15:59lot more to give. You're able to operate from
- 16:02overflow. You're able to let your yeses be
- 16:07yes and your noes be noes. You're respected more because
- 16:12people now see your time as valuable.
- 16:15When people have too much access because you're minding their
- 16:19business, they can easily take you for granted or expect things
- 16:23that you never set or intended to be a standard.
- 16:27OK, so minding your business is change.
- 16:32And with change there comes resistance and there comes
- 16:34barriers or push back, right? People are going to notice that
- 16:39you're minding your business. And some of them, they might not
- 16:43like it, they might have a hard time adjusting.
- 16:46Doesn't mean that they don't care about you, doesn't mean
- 16:49that they don't love you. They're just like, what's this?
- 16:53And this is not what I was expecting, right?
- 16:55So they also need time to adjust.
- 16:58And we want them to notice. OK, We want them to notice.
- 17:01Now where it gets hard is that minding your business also means
- 17:05you can't manage how they feel. And for some of them, they might
- 17:08interpret it as abandonment. It might feel like
- 17:12inconvenience. Some of them might even try to
- 17:14guilt trip you or you know that that that classic.
- 17:18Oh, you change now. You too good for us now.
- 17:21Indicators that you've changed and this is nothing you said.
- 17:26The reality is if they are projecting onto you, they do
- 17:31feel abandoned, right? And that's probably their truth.
- 17:35It's likely tied to something from a prior season in their
- 17:37life where other people have left them or they've not risen.
- 17:42And sometimes they're afraid to rise because they think that
- 17:45means they'll leave others behind.
- 17:47When it's a choice, all of us have the choice to rise and it
- 17:51doesn't have to be this big huge thing, just making healthier
- 17:57decisions. And some do, not just to be in
- 18:01community, but it's a community that then you'll never feel
- 18:05comfortable in because it's not a community that accepts you at
- 18:11your fullest, that's not threatened by your growth.
- 18:15And you're not doing any of us any favors by playing small.
- 18:20And let's be clear, just because they try to guilt trip you, it
- 18:23does not mean that you've done something wrong.
- 18:25It's just confirmation. It's confirmation of your
- 18:29growth. And when that happens, let them.
- 18:32If they move away from you, if they pull away from you, let
- 18:36them. Let them lose you because that
- 18:40was their choice. And I know that sounds scary,
- 18:43downright terrifying even. But they made a choice, not you.
- 18:49And the more you try to hold on to and preserve that
- 18:52relationship, they'll lose respect for you.
- 18:57You will be misused, mishandled, and abused.
- 19:01You have to let people adjust. An adjustment can look like them
- 19:07adapting to the new version of you, giving them time.
- 19:11It could also look like letting them lose you again choice, but
- 19:16you, you can leave space for that.
- 19:19And sometimes people, they need a pause.
- 19:22It can take them a long time to come back.
- 19:25Or I've experienced that in past friendships where things broke
- 19:29down, I thought I did something wrong and I was working to
- 19:31repair the friendship and wanted the friendship and finally got
- 19:34to the point where it was just like I didn't do anything.
- 19:39What am I fixing? Where I let them, I took my
- 19:43hands off of it. I minded my business.
- 19:46And you know what happened? My absence required them to look
- 19:51at themselves. It was painful every single
- 19:54time. I've experienced this, but in my
- 19:58absence, they grew. When you mind your business,
- 20:01you're no longer enabling certain behaviors in people.
- 20:05You're no longer standing in the gaps.
- 20:07They have to learn to figure things out.
- 20:11They have to learn to hop over the puddle where you were there
- 20:16prior before to say, hey, watch out for that puddle.
- 20:19They have to learn it on their own.
- 20:22And it's not punishment. It's not punishment.
- 20:25It's growth. And in doing so, that lead that
- 20:29led to actually like reconciliation in the end where
- 20:33they came back around, we had a conversation.
- 20:36They took ownership of their parts.
- 20:38Apologies were even issued and I had gotten to the point where I
- 20:43was just like, OK, I guess I'll let it be what it's going to be.
- 20:46And it was actually a really beautiful thing to see that they
- 20:50grew. Now, what would have happened if
- 20:53I stayed in that gap? I would have been emotionally
- 20:56beaten down. I would have felt disregarded.
- 21:00Resentment could have built. There's so many things that can
- 21:04come out of not minding your business.
- 21:07And I want you to know you do not have to shrink to keep
- 21:11connections. And if you do, it's not a
- 21:14genuine connection, OK? When you truly mind your
- 21:18business, you will find peace or peace finds you.
- 21:23And it will get deeper. Your clarity will sharpen.
- 21:28You'll have more discernment, you'll be more balanced.
- 21:31Your body will react. You don't even have to work to
- 21:34identify the threats. You'll have the capacity to take
- 21:37things as they come and respond in the moment.
- 21:40So you're not even having to be prepared because that nervous
- 21:45system is at ease. So that means you have it.
- 21:48You're from moving, from operating, from overflow, and
- 21:53ultimately your relationships improve.
- 21:56And then you'll get to show up in a way that's beneficial to
- 21:59whomever you're in relationship with.
- 22:03And that discernment gets stronger and stronger and your
- 22:08emotional intelligence, it goes up and that creates a ripple in
- 22:12your environment. When you mind your business, you
- 22:16not only heal yourself, you heal your communities, you heal your
- 22:20relationships, the ones that made her through the adjustment
- 22:23period anyway, because you're showing people a different way
- 22:27of doing things. And then they can see it on you.
- 22:31They'll see the glow, they'll see the productivity in your
- 22:36life, they'll see you elevating, they'll see your skin glowing,
- 22:41they'll see you losing weight. They just see, like all of a
- 22:44sudden you just have a aura about you.
- 22:48They'll see it, they'll experience it, and they'll get
- 22:51curious. So minding your business, it
- 22:54gives others permission to do the same and it inspires them to
- 23:00do the same and motivates them to do the same because they knew
- 23:05the version of you that didn't mind your business and what your
- 23:09struggles were. And they can see that those
- 23:11things are no more minding your business.
- 23:14This is what emotional maturity looks like.
- 23:18So 2026 doesn't require more hustle, it requires more
- 23:24alignment. And alignment starts when you
- 23:27decide to no longer abandoned yourself.
- 23:30Not minding your business is self abandoning.
- 23:34It's self sabotage, it's self betrayal.
- 23:40And we're not doing that. In 2026 is the year where you
- 23:44mind your business. 2026 is your year for Breakthrough. 2026 is
- 23:51your year to give yourself and others the permission to rise.
- 23:57I want to thank you for tuning in for another episode of Rise
