- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37What would cause you or me to be willing to go through
- 0:40persecution or to have a uncomfortable conversation or
- 0:44relationship with someone who doesn't like us because we want
- 0:49to tell them about Jesus? The only thing that would cause
- 0:53you or me or these guys to do what it is they're doing is that
- 0:58they are full of the Spirit and that Holy Spirit attributes are
- 1:02Lovejoy, peace, long-suffering, goodness, meekness, temperance,
- 1:07and self-control. Sharing Jesus despite resistance
- 1:11is like planting seeds in rocky soil, trusting they'll grow
- 1:15anyway. In today's message, Pastor Clark
- 1:18reveals how your willingness to face persecution or tough
- 1:22conversations comes from being filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 1:26The Spirit empowers you. Without the Spirit, you'd
- 1:30hesitate. His presence makes you
- 1:33courageous. You are equipped to endure for
- 1:36His sake. Are you relying on the Holy
- 1:39Spirit's power to share Jesus even when it's uncomfortable or
- 1:43difficult? Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:46book of Acts Chapter 3 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:50of Grace. So Moses spoke about the Messiah
- 1:54who was to come. The nation of Israel has gone
- 1:56through tremendous heartache, burned in ovens, all kind of
- 2:00things going on. And it isn't over yet.
- 2:03The, the, the army of the north, Russia in the last days will be
- 2:06that country that will descend upon them to try to destroy
- 2:10them. And you used to think, boy, I, I
- 2:12don't know. It doesn't seem possible.
- 2:14Russia seems like a very calm country, right?
- 2:18Sort of picking up some of the ideologies of capitalism and
- 2:22free enterprise and religious freedom and all that, and then
- 2:25all of a sudden this rogue leader in Russia has become a
- 2:29tyrant, right? Do you think it's possible that
- 2:32if he does this to Ukraine, he could do this to Israel?
- 2:35The intentions prophetically are directed that way.
- 2:38And in time this will all be unfolded.
- 2:41I don't know if it's going to be in our lifetime, another 100
- 2:43years, whatever 1000, but it is prophetically in the Bible
- 2:47regarding what will happen in that last period of the
- 2:50seven-year tribulation, in the last 3 1/2 years.
- 2:53So Moses is being referenced by Peter.
- 2:58Peter knows the prophets and knows the Old Testament Torah in
- 3:03the Scriptures. This is this is how they preach.
- 3:06They preach from the Old Testament.
- 3:09Now as New Covenant believers, we preach the gospel primarily
- 3:12from the New Testament. We can use the Old Testament,
- 3:15but the New Covenant's far better than the Old Covenant.
- 3:18The Old Covenant we learn historically of how God worked
- 3:21through his nation Israel, unfortunately, almost to no
- 3:24avail. The nation of Israel, in spite
- 3:26of having all these blessings and promises, they've still
- 3:29refused to believe for the most part that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 3:34And so Peter's telling them that Moses told you guys that Jesus
- 3:39is the Christ, the Messiah. You're to hear from him.
- 3:42Verse 24. Yes.
- 3:43And all the prophets from Samuel and those who follow, as many as
- 3:47have spoken have also foretold these days that this wasn't
- 3:51Moses, there was others. You are sons of the prophets and
- 3:55of the covenant which God made with our fathers saying to
- 3:57Abraham, and in your seed all the families of the earth shall
- 4:01be blessed to you first. God having raised up his
- 4:04servant, Jesus sent him to bless you and turning away everyone of
- 4:09you from your iniquities. And so the gospel is the same
- 4:14today as it was in the days of the book of the Acts.
- 4:17It's still empowered by the the work of the Holy Spirit and it
- 4:21convicts people and it causes them to see their need of Jesus.
- 4:25But for some reason right now, and you can study this later, we
- 4:28went through it extensively when we went through the book of
- 4:30Romans. You can read Romans chapter 9:10
- 4:34and 11:00 and it'll sort of encapsulate all this plan that
- 4:38God has for Israel while they're blind, in part so that the the
- 4:42gospel would come to us and we would receive it, and that
- 4:45eventually Israel and the Jewish people would become jealous of
- 4:49us because we've become partakers of this covenant that
- 4:52God gave to Abraham. They've sort of cut themselves
- 4:55off from the covenant temporarily because of their
- 4:58unbelief, but God promises in the 11th chapter of Romans the
- 5:03answer the question from Paul was, was God through with
- 5:05Israel? No, he isn't.
- 5:08He's got this plan for Israel that the nation would be saved
- 5:12in the last days. So there was this great revival
- 5:15in in Israel and many, almost all the population that hadn't
- 5:19been martyred during the tribulation will come to faith
- 5:22in Christ. Matter of fact, it says whenever
- 5:24he returns a second coming, it'll really dawn on them
- 5:27because it says every eye will see him and they'll look up when
- 5:30he's coming and they'll see him whom they appear 1st and it'll
- 5:34it'll 'cause their hearts to be broken and contrite and
- 5:37repentant and believe. So they preach this message.
- 5:42Now I'm thinking about Peter as an individual human being like
- 5:47us. How different he was weeks
- 5:50before this event. What compelled him now to do
- 5:55what it is he's doing here? They're going to face
- 5:57persecution because of this, this message he's proclaiming.
- 6:03Why did he struggle that night when they asked him directly if
- 6:08he knew who Jesus was? Well, the big difference is the
- 6:13empowerment of the Holy Spirit. He's a different man now and I
- 6:19don't think at times we realize how different we are or how
- 6:22different we could be because of this same Holy Spirit that lives
- 6:25in US. Many times we have challenges
- 6:30and I don't, I can't do this or I'm not able to do this.
- 6:34And that's a good recognition in regard to spiritual work.
- 6:38I, I can't do what I'm doing here today apart from the work
- 6:41of the Holy Spirit. There's no way.
- 6:43And I know that in the core of my being, I have one or two
- 6:47alternatives. I come up here in my own
- 6:48strength and I do some study and I try to give you some
- 6:52information and hope that it has some impact.
- 6:55But that's futility because without the Holy Spirit, there
- 6:58will be nothing happening here today in your heart of mine.
- 7:02And so there is a difference between us living life,
- 7:07believing and loving God, trusting God, and also being
- 7:12empowered and filled with the Spirit of God.
- 7:16And as we're studying this book, I hope my prayer is that myself
- 7:20as well as you are investigating more and more of this need to be
- 7:24filled with God's Spirit. He may be putting something on
- 7:28your heart about a ministry or a service or something that you're
- 7:32stalled because you're thinking, I can't commit to this, I can't
- 7:36do this. I don't have the strength, I
- 7:39don't have the ability. I mean, we got all these excuses
- 7:41before God and the Lord already said, well, without me you can't
- 7:44do anything. So why don't you just ask me to
- 7:47do it in you and I'll do it through you?
- 7:51Well, that's a novel idea. I never really thought about
- 7:53that. I never really thought about
- 7:55asking God for help. I thought I had to do it all
- 7:58myself, right? You ever think that way?
- 8:01But we can say, God, I, I, I sense what it is you want and
- 8:06what it is you desire and I'm willing, but you have to give me
- 8:09the grace and fill me with the power to do what it is you've
- 8:13called me to do. And he'll do that for you.
- 8:17He really will. So now they're entering this
- 8:20chapter 4 and they're, they're in the process of getting
- 8:22arrested, Peter and John getting arrested.
- 8:26They're going to be arrested by the same people that came
- 8:30against Christ and had him crucified.
- 8:33Now, I would be somewhat intimidated in saying, boy, this
- 8:36looks somewhat familiar here. These same, some of these same
- 8:39characters that took Jesus and, you know, beat him and, and
- 8:43eventually crucified him. What's going to happen to us
- 8:47now? But they weren't worried about
- 8:48that because they were in power by the Holy Spirit.
- 8:50And you read the writings of the apostle Paul and imprisoned
- 8:54numerous time. He was never crying about, you
- 8:57know, what was happening or afraid of what was going to
- 9:00happen. He distrusted God and, and it's
- 9:03because of the Holy Spirit's influence and power in his life.
- 9:06And so now these guys are going to encounter some persecution.
- 9:10And when you think about persecution, what wouldn't, What
- 9:13would cause you or me to be willing to go through
- 9:16persecution or to have a uncomfortable conversation or
- 9:20relationship with someone who doesn't like us because we want
- 9:24to tell them about Jesus? The only thing that would cause
- 9:29you or me or these guys to do what it is they're doing is that
- 9:33they are full of the Spirit and that Holy Spirit attributes are
- 9:38Lovejoy, peace, long-suffering, goodness, meekness, temperance,
- 9:43and self-control. So the love of Jesus was so deep
- 9:47in these guys that they were willing to sacrifice their own
- 9:51lives for the sake of others coming to know Him.
- 9:55They asked Paul at times, you know, one verse in the in the
- 9:58Bible, they they said, well, what what causes you to, to put
- 10:02up with this abuse and rejection and frustration with the
- 10:06churches at times. He said, it's the love of Christ
- 10:09that compels me. The love of Christ is so
- 10:13powerful that it can cause us to overcome the greatest
- 10:17adversities and challenges of life.
- 10:20And now as they spoke to the people, the priest, the captain
- 10:23of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them being greatly
- 10:27disturbed. They, these guys are uptight,
- 10:29they're mad. This isn't a calm conversation
- 10:32that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the
- 10:35resurrection of the dead. Though the Sadducees of the of
- 10:39all these leaders were the group that didn't believe in a literal
- 10:42resurrection. They didn't believe in life
- 10:45after death. They didn't believe in the
- 10:46Spirit, and so this was a complete affront to their
- 10:51religion and their theology. And so they took great offense
- 10:55at what this message was about. The Pharisees believed in the
- 10:59resurrection, so they were on a different page than the
- 11:01Sadducees, but nonetheless, they were all against this person,
- 11:05Jesus Christ. They were against them when they
- 11:07crucified him, and now they're against him with his followers.
- 11:11They're greatly disturbed that they taught the people and
- 11:15preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead and
- 11:18they laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next
- 11:22day. So they're they're thrown in
- 11:24jail and they spend the night in jail.
- 11:26But it was already evening. However, many of those who heard
- 11:29the word believed and the number of the men came to about 5000.
- 11:33So as I said in the early part of Acts 3000 came to know the
- 11:36Lord. They hear this message of
- 11:38Peter's preaching. Several thousand more people
- 11:41come to know the Lord. So there's this great, great
- 11:44movement of God's Spirit opening the eyes of many, many Jewish
- 11:48people to believe that Jesus is a Christ.
- 11:51Nonetheless, there's still a lot of people that aren't wanting to
- 11:54believe or, you know, refusing to believe.
- 11:57So Peter addresses the the Sanhedrin.
- 11:59And the Sanhedrin is this group of, you know, political leaders.
- 12:03And they set the precedent for the rules and regulations of how
- 12:07things go down in their religion.
- 12:09The Apostle Paul was a member of the Sanhedrin, obviously, before
- 12:12he became saved and met the Lord Jesus.
- 12:15And we'll study about that down the road in the book of the
- 12:17Acts. And it came to pass on the next
- 12:19day that they're rulers, elders and scribes, as well as Anis,
- 12:23the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and many were of
- 12:27the family of the high priest were gathered together in at
- 12:30Jerusalem. So what's interesting is when
- 12:32these people like retired or died, it was like the ultimate
- 12:37nepotism. I mean, they had their family,
- 12:39their kids, their relatives, all controlling what's happening in
- 12:42the in the particular empire at the time.
- 12:45And so some of these guys were familiar and some of them were
- 12:48descendants of the other ones. And when they had set them in
- 12:51the midst, they asked by what power or by what name have you
- 12:55done this? Good question, isn't it?
- 12:57By what power or by what name have you done this?
- 13:01Then Peter filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 13:03And that's important to underline in your Bible.
- 13:06Peter this and get up there and start giving him a rebuttal of
- 13:09his position and giving him a bunch of doctrines and defenses.
- 13:13It says and, and for his for our benefit, to know that the only
- 13:17way he could deal with this group of people that were
- 13:19persecuting them would be to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 13:23And, and you and me. That's we have to remember, like
- 13:25when we're in positions of real difficulty, challenges with
- 13:29people in situations, whether it's work or home or family or
- 13:32neighbors or just life itself. I mean, we got to stop that.
- 13:35God, I can't, I can't maneuver this.
- 13:38I need a fresh empowerment and filling of your Holy Spirit.
- 13:41I don't know how to move forward with this.
- 13:44Well, Peter understood the need to be filled with the Holy
- 13:47Spirit, and he was filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 13:49Numerous teachings throughout the book of the Acts, you'll see
- 13:52continual fresh infillings of God's Spirit.
- 13:56He said rulers of the people and elders of Israel.
- 13:59If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless
- 14:03man, by what means he has been made, well, let it be known to
- 14:08you all and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of
- 14:12Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised
- 14:17from the dead by him, this man stands here before you whole.
- 14:22So it's only through the power of God in the name of Jesus
- 14:26Christ that this blame man who was lame since birth, he was
- 14:29about 40 when he got this healing is standing there before
- 14:33them whole. This is the stone in verse 11
- 14:36which was rejected by you. This is from Psalm 118 by you
- 14:42builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.
- 14:45So they got all this religion, religious activity going on.
- 14:48They got all this stuff they're working with as a as a nation,
- 14:52and they are missing the key ingredient to the effectiveness
- 14:58of their faith and their theology because they used
- 15:02everything that God had provided through the Old Testament, the
- 15:05symbolism, the sacrifices, everything that was in place
- 15:10except the key to making all this work at the time.
- 15:14And that is Jesus Christ. He's the chief cornerstone.
- 15:17Without him, none of this stuff can work.
- 15:20And then he says something very, very specific here in verse 12.
- 15:25And now today we're living in a day that you and I tell people
- 15:28this stuff and they'll they'll call us bigots, close minded.
- 15:32They'll say there's other, there's got to be other ways.
- 15:34That's not fair. You know what?
- 15:36Why do we need to have? Why do we need Jesus?
- 15:38Can't we do it some other way? They don't understand this whole
- 15:41truth of the Bible and understanding that Christ is the
- 15:45only one that could shed his blood for the remission of sin.
- 15:49The Bible tells us without the shedding of blood, there is no
- 15:52forgiveness of sin. Not your blood, not my blood,
- 15:56not Buddha's blood, not Muhammad's blood, not Krishna's
- 15:59blood. Only the blood of Jesus could
- 16:03cleanse us from sin. So that's why he specifically
- 16:06says, and this is a key verse in the Bible, that you know you
- 16:10should memorize and know when you have conversations with
- 16:13people. Nor is there salvation in any
- 16:16other, for there is no other name under heaven given among
- 16:19men by which we must be saved. Amen.
- 16:23Period, exclamation point, dot it.
- 16:26I mean, that's it. There is no other way of
- 16:28salvation. And Jesus talked about this.
- 16:31He said I am the way, I am the truth, I am the life.
- 16:36No man cometh to the Father but through me, right?
- 16:41There's no other way. And so all of us here today, the
- 16:45majority of us have come to faith in Christ.
- 16:48Thank God by His grace that he saved us, for by grace we've
- 16:54been saved through faith. Amen.
- 16:56And this certainly was not of ourselves.
- 16:58It's a gift of God, not of works.
- 17:00And no one can boast, for we are His workmanship, creating Christ
- 17:05Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained, that we
- 17:08should walk in them. And so this whole focus of
- 17:11ministry that's happening in this world today is rooted and
- 17:16based upon this foundation, this chief cornerstone that Jesus is
- 17:23the Christ, the Son of the living God, and there's
- 17:25salvation and no other name. Now, when they saw the boldness
- 17:29of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated and
- 17:32untrained men, they marveled and they realized that they had been
- 17:35with Jesus. Well, not only had they been
- 17:37with Jesus, they're still with Jesus.
- 17:39And you and me are with Jesus right now, right?
- 17:42He's here with us, present with us.
- 17:45And so this is not a past tense thing here.
- 17:48Would they think it's a past tense thing?
- 17:50And seeing the man who had been healed standing with him, they
- 17:53could say nothing against it, because if they started
- 17:56challenging the reality of this man's miracle, the people would
- 17:59have flipped out. But when they had commanded them
- 18:01to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
- 18:04saying, and what shall we do to these men?
- 18:07For if indeed that a notable miracle has been done through
- 18:10them is evident to all who dwell in Jerusalem, we cannot deny it.
- 18:15But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us
- 18:18severely threaten them that from now on they speak to no man in
- 18:23this name. Can you imagine that?
- 18:25I mean, like, there's no way Peter and John are going to say,
- 18:28oh, OK, we won't talk about this anymore.
- 18:31Like you and me. We're we're, there's no way
- 18:34we're not going to tell someone what Jesus has done for us.
- 18:36I mean, it's like ludicrous. So in verse 18 they called them
- 18:39and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of
- 18:42Jesus. But Peter and John answered and
- 18:45said to them, Whether it is right and the sight of God to
- 18:47listen to you more than to God you judge.
- 18:50For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and
- 18:53heard. So when they had further
- 18:55threatened them, they let them go, finding no way of punishing
- 18:59them. So God's favor, grace,
- 19:00protection, he told them in the Gospels, don't worry what you're
- 19:04going to say or how you're going to respond when you're brought
- 19:06before the authorities, you'll be given what it is you need to
- 19:09know to say by the Spirit when that time comes.
- 19:12And obviously this is obviously happening here occurring and so
- 19:17it says they leave and because of the people since they all
- 19:21glorify God for what had been done for the man was over 40
- 19:25years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.
- 19:29So you know what, what's the challenge for us today.
- 19:33I just felt let read first Corinthians 13.
- 19:36This is a many devotion because if I don't have God's love in me
- 19:42and you don't have God's love in you.
- 19:44All we are is a clanging gong and a noisy cymbal.
- 19:49We can give information, but we can't see transformation apart
- 19:53from the work of the Spirit of God through the love of God.
- 19:56This is the biggest need in the world today.
- 19:59The love of God, it says, in the last days the love of many will
- 20:02wax cold. In other words, people's hearts
- 20:05will become cold and cold and indifferent.
- 20:08And we don't want that to happen to us.
- 20:10And this is a good chapter to read once in a while to just
- 20:13think about where you are. And you can put your name in the
- 20:16different descriptions of what love is and see how you think
- 20:19you might be doing. And if it's you're, you're
- 20:22struggling you, you got to ask the Holy Spirit to fill you so
- 20:24that this love can come through. Though I speak with the tongues
- 20:28of men and of angels, but have not love, I've become the
- 20:32sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
- 20:35And though I've had the gift of prophecy and understanding all
- 20:38mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith so that
- 20:41I could remove mountains, but have not love, I'm nothing.
- 20:44And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I
- 20:47give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me
- 20:50nothing. Love suffers long and is kind.
- 20:55Love does not envy. Love does not parade itself, is
- 20:59not puffed up, does not behave rudely.
- 21:02Love does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil,
- 21:07does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth, bears
- 21:11all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all
- 21:16things. Love never fails.
- 21:19But whether there are prophecies, they will fail.
- 21:22Whether there are tongues, they will cease.
- 21:24Whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
- 21:27For we know in part, and we prophecy in part.
- 21:30But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in
- 21:34part will be done away. When I was a child, I spoke as a
- 21:37child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child.
- 21:41But when I became a man, I put away childish things.
- 21:44For now we see in a mere dimly, but then face to face.
- 21:48Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am
- 21:52known. And now abide Faith, hope, and
- 21:56love, these three. But the greatest of these is
- 22:00love. Father, we come before you,
- 22:03Lord, humbled by your scriptures.
- 22:05Today as we study the book of the Acts and we see how merciful
- 22:10you were and how powerful you work through human lives, how
- 22:14you want to work through each of our lives.
- 22:16And use us, Father, with this wonderful message that can
- 22:19change lives and give people the hope and the promise of eternal
- 22:25life, Lord. There's a need in this world
- 22:29today for the gospel more than I think any time I've ever lived.
- 22:34I just see the the insanity that's happening in this world,
- 22:37Lord. And you're the only answer,
- 22:40Christ. You are the answer.
- 22:42And your word can change people, it can change lives, it can
- 22:46change cultures and civilizations.
- 22:48It can change governments. It can change authorities and
- 22:51leaders. Lord, we don't have to live
- 22:53hopeless lives. We can live with this hope of
- 22:56the gospel and then look for opportunities to share it and
- 23:00also to pray for others, to be given opportunities to stand
- 23:03before kings and Princess, to proclaim the need of Christ, the
- 23:07Prince of peace. And Lord, we ask by your grace,
- 23:11Lord, that you would favor us and impart to us a greater
- 23:14manifestation of this love that you have for this world.
- 23:18Pour it into us so it can be poured out of us, that we would
- 23:22have patience with people that we would have a desire to love
- 23:27even when we're not loved, Lord, and to give it all for you,
- 23:31Lord, as you've given it for us. Lord, we know this is a prayer
- 23:36that you will answer if our hearts are open to having more
- 23:40of you and less of us. So Lord, please do that in US
- 23:44and do it in this church. Lord, we can be a stronger
- 23:47influence for you in this community and wherever we go,
- 23:50wherever we work, wherever we live, we thank you, Father.
- 23:57We're so glad you joined us today on this edition of Living
- 24:00Waters of Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching through
- 24:03the Book of Acts, which is the only book that chronicles the
- 24:06history of the early church immediately after Jesus's
- 24:10ascension. It gives us a front row seat to
- 24:13how the Gospel began to move outwards, starting in Jerusalem
- 24:17and reaching into the heart of the Roman Empire.
- 24:20In just three decades, a small group of frightened ordinary
- 24:24believers became a bold, spirit empowered movement that
- 24:27transformed the known world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson, it's a reminder of what God can do when His people are
- 24:35surrendered, obedient, and filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 24:40Their perseverance still inspires us today.
- 24:44May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in
- 24:47our own time. We hope today's message
- 24:50encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
