Transcript
- 0:00I'm Jamie Gennaro, author, career coach, and founder of Practica Consulting.
- 0:05In today's episode, we're diving deep into the realities of career change,
- 0:09layoffs, and reinvention.
- 0:11If you've been impacted by a layoff, are facing uncertainty in your career,
- 0:16or are simply feeling stuck, I want you to know you're not alone.
- 0:20This episode is for you. Enjoy.
- 0:25Hello, hello. I am here today to talk to you about change, about reinvention, layoffs.
- 0:34I want to use this episode to both grieve and identify loss and also understand
- 0:42when one door closes, another opens.
- 0:45And I don't want this to be full of just toxic positivity and thinking about,
- 0:50oh, just change your mindset.
- 0:51I want to give you some real tangible tips and things that will help you move forward.
- 0:58And I also want to acknowledge what it could mean for you, what this change
- 1:03and shift, why it's happening to you, and what it could mean if you shift perspective a little bit.
- 1:10You know, the reason I want to identify this is I know in the U.S.
- 1:13In particular, there are a lot of layoffs happening right now.
- 1:16And for all the reasons, right? We know what they are.
- 1:19And it doesn't make it any easier if it's happening to us.
- 1:23And I have been laid off. Let me count.
- 1:27I have been laid off three times and I just recently kind of wrapped up an engagement,
- 1:33a long-term engagement in a fractional role with an organization.
- 1:37And even though it wasn't a layoff and I'm a contractor and a consultant,
- 1:41there's still like a moment of grieving something that you've been doing consistently
- 1:45for a while and you build relationships with people in these spaces.
- 1:50And so there's still acknowledgement of something coming to an end and the sadness
- 1:55that can be wrapped up in that.
- 1:57So in these moments of layoffs, there needs to be time to be sad.
- 2:03You need to give yourself time to do all the things.
- 2:07And that might mean having a pity party and feeling bad and feeling taking it
- 2:12personally and all the things that we do. Even though layoffs mean that,
- 2:16you know, it's not a getting fired.
- 2:18A layoff is literally a business needs to restructure or a business is running
- 2:23out of money or your role is not applicable to the organization anymore.
- 2:31So interesting. I feel like I'm like trying to talk really fast.
- 2:35There are so many things I want to say. I'm getting all excited and I need to breathe.
- 2:40Breathe. So, always remember that that first phase of losing anything in your
- 2:47life, it's important to not run away from the feelings, to be in it,
- 2:53even though it sucks and it's hard, but let yourself be in it.
- 2:58Let yourself be in the sadness, let yourself be in the grief.
- 3:01Let yourself be in the degrading yourself and demeaning yourself.
- 3:06Just be in there for a minute because it's the resistance that makes that stage
- 3:10last longer than it needs to.
- 3:13So if you let it happen and you know that feelings can't kill you, right? They can hurt.
- 3:21But they're just going to hurt. And then that hurt is going to extinguish itself
- 3:26because you're allowing it.
- 3:28And then you can move forward when you're ready.
- 3:31So I'm not saying go into bed and pull the covers over your head for weeks on
- 3:37end, but give yourself time.
- 3:40Give yourself time to be in that space.
- 3:42Give yourself time to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's and watch a bunch of movies
- 3:48and just be in it for a minute. It's really important.
- 3:52So sometimes we see these things coming. Sometimes we can see a layoff on the horizon.
- 3:58And sometimes it's a shock to the system. Those two perspectives also are going
- 4:04to shift the way that you're feeling about it.
- 4:06Because if it's really, if the rug is really pulled out from under you,
- 4:10there's going to be a different level of pain than if you saw it coming.
- 4:14If it really surprised you, then there's a different level of hurt in that situation.
- 4:22And just acknowledge that too. If you saw it on the horizon.
- 4:27Be honest with yourself.
- 4:29Because sometimes we go into this pity party space and we're like, I had no idea.
- 4:33Well, you did. You saw it coming. You were probably in some way emotionally preparing for it.
- 4:40It doesn't mean that when it actually happens, it's any easier,
- 4:44but it is a little bit of a different perspective.
- 4:47And so own that too and be honest about that. So I want to, you know,
- 4:53thank you and recognize you for the hard work that you did in the job,
- 4:58because sometimes that doesn't happen.
- 5:01You don't get recognized enough.
- 5:03You don't get thanked. You don't feel the appreciation from people.
- 5:08And so if you haven't felt that, I want to acknowledge it. And you're like,
- 5:13I don't work with you, Jamie. It's not helpful.
- 5:16It's bullshit. But I really do think that even for yourself to understand that
- 5:23you don't always have to seek external validation,
- 5:28conversation that you know what you contributed.
- 5:32You know the impact that you made. And so allow yourself to own that also.
- 5:37So once you're through that pity party, and I don't mean that in a bad way.
- 5:42Like, it's just like party pooper.
- 5:44Like, okay, sometimes I'm a party pooper.
- 5:47Sometimes I'm a teetotaler. And sometimes you need to have a pity party.
- 5:51Like, that's fine. I'm not judging. But once you're through that phase of the grieving process.
- 5:57Move into a space of really acknowledging the hard work and the effort and the
- 6:04impact that you made in the role you were in before you got laid off.
- 6:09Own it. It's yours. You get to have that acknowledgement and you get to own
- 6:15that piece of what you contributed to that organization.
- 6:20We don't always know the inner workings of companies enough to know why we got laid off.
- 6:27And sometimes we never learn. We never really get to have full closure on the reason why.
- 6:34But just know that you made
- 6:37a valiant effort and an important contribution
- 6:41to the company if you hadn't have made such a contribution
- 6:44you would have been fired so now we've gone through grief we've gone through
- 6:48that acknowledgement of the hard work that we did and then now i want to zoom
- 6:53out and i'm gonna get a little woo-woo on you so if you're not into that sort
- 6:58of thing you can stop listening now.
- 7:01But I want to zoom out because one of the things that I feel really strongly about in my work,
- 7:09And one of the things I really help support people with is this idea of you
- 7:13don't have to be in the 9-to-5 grind.
- 7:16Sometimes and for some people it feels like the only option.
- 7:20But when you get laid off, allow yourself, this is phase 3, allow yourself to
- 7:28think about what all the options could be.
- 7:31If you didn't just go back to that normal nine-to-five grind,
- 7:35get into the application process, get on LinkedIn, start applying for jobs,
- 7:39if you didn't do that, what could things look like?
- 7:43The part of what's important to me here is that I really feel like we're in
- 7:47a moment of breaking apart old systems and old structures.
- 7:55And no matter what you think of the politics behind what's happening in the
- 8:00world. And I grieve for a lot of the things that are happening.
- 8:05But you can't deny there's a breaking apart of the old way.
- 8:09And for a lot of us, that's really scary and we don't like the direction it's going in.
- 8:13If we didn't get too deep into the analysis of it and we realized it's just happening,
- 8:20whether we want it to or not, there's a shift happening in general in the world
- 8:25of the old way and a new way.
- 8:29And I don't necessarily like the new way that I see happening,
- 8:33but I do embrace the idea of a new way.
- 8:37And I think that in this old structure of patriarchal work environments,
- 8:43that's an old way that I'd
- 8:46really love for you if you're at
- 8:49this precipice of deciding what's next for you to just explore what it could
- 8:54look like if it didn't look like the old way is there a creative way of getting
- 9:02to this place of earning income that doesn't look like the way you've done it before.
- 9:08I just love the creativity that comes when we tell ourselves and embrace this
- 9:15idea that I could make a lot of money doing it my way.
- 9:19That means different things for different people, but I just would love for
- 9:24you to, you know, what we say, play in the sandbox, put every idea on the table.
- 9:29Because what happens when we put our heads down and we go into the nine to five
- 9:34and we get our paycheck and we feel a level of stability in that,
- 9:39no question, but we also make a lot of compromises.
- 9:44And those compromises are different for different people. And the reason they
- 9:48make those compromises are great for all the different reasons,
- 9:52but we always make compromises. And that might be in the amount of time we have to ourselves.
- 9:59It might be in the amount of vacation time.
- 10:03It might be in the amount of time we get to spend with the people we love,
- 10:08friends and family, kids that we're raising.
- 10:10It might be a compromise of having to deal with toxic people,
- 10:16toxic environments, but we're willing to sacrifice for that because we're getting a big paycheck.
- 10:23It might be the level of stress. It might be the impact on our health.
- 10:28So we make these compromises for the stability of the paycheck.
- 10:32And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. There's zero judgment.
- 10:37But if you didn't have to make those compromises, and before you start getting
- 10:43into the space of like, well, that's not possible, or I don't want to be an
- 10:45entrepreneur, or I don't like this, or I don't...
- 10:47Before you start finding all the reasons why there's no way that could be possible,
- 10:52if you're in this moment, if you're already at this crossroads,
- 10:57just allow yourself the space to explore it?
- 11:01Because what's it going to hurt? You're over here applying for jobs.
- 11:04That's going at its own pace. So why not just play around in a sandbox in parallel,
- 11:11right? You don't have to give up one for the other.
- 11:13But if you haven't landed a job yet, then give yourself some space to just explore.
- 11:19What are all the things that could be possible for you if you allowed yourself
- 11:24creative problem-solving space to come at it from a new direction?
- 11:29What are your skill sets? What do people need right now?
- 11:33For me, what I'm noticing is, you know, I had shifted into executive coaching
- 11:38because I was seeing a lot of people in pain at work and burnout.
- 11:42And now I'm seeing that people are back to getting laid off and being.
- 11:48You know, in these places where they need to find income sources really quickly.
- 11:53And that was when I started my business during COVID, that's exactly what was happening.
- 11:58And I stepped in to support people who needed to find a creative way to earn
- 12:03income that didn't look like the old way because nobody was even working in
- 12:07an office, nobody was hiring, nobody knew what was going on.
- 12:11So the only path forward was this creative way of earning income that didn't
- 12:17look like the old way because the old way had crumbled before our eyes within a month.
- 12:23And we needed to get creative. So I'm going back to my roots of my business
- 12:29because that's what people need right now. I'm seeing it.
- 12:32We're watching economic downturn.
- 12:35We're watching inflation rise.
- 12:37We're watching tariffs and all these things that are impacting businesses and
- 12:43keeping them from wanting to hire.
- 12:45And then we're also seeing reorgs, massive layoffs, and people saturating the job market.
- 12:52So you can go the old route and you can apply for jobs just to know the level
- 12:58of competition that you're up against in applying for those jobs.
- 13:03Giving yourself the freedom to maybe explore something else,
- 13:06why not? Why wouldn't you do that?
- 13:08Think about your skill set. Think about the gap in the market.
- 13:11It. Think about what people need. Think about how you can support that need.
- 13:16Someone's stuck in a situation and you are providing the way out for them.
- 13:22What does that look like? And obviously, like whatever your skill set is,
- 13:26you can find a story line, right?
- 13:30Like I do this. People need this.
- 13:33I'm in the middle of the desert. This thing is going to be the thing that helps
- 13:37people get out to the desert.
- 13:39So let's go back to the woo-woo part.
- 13:42Everything happens for a reason. If you believe that, then the reason you're
- 13:46in the situation you're in right now is because there's a shift that needed
- 13:51to happen that couldn't happen unless you got out of the job that you were in.
- 13:57It just needed to happen. It needed to happen abruptly. It needed to happen
- 14:01in this way because you might not have left any other way.
- 14:04And I can say that for me, before I started my business, that was where I was at.
- 14:09I was in a comfortable job. I was in a comfortable industry.
- 14:12I was in a job that I did well. I understood.
- 14:16I worked really hard at. I'd gotten to a certain place in my career.
- 14:20And I wasn't ready to give it up. But I also knew all the sacrifices I was making
- 14:25and how they were hurting me.
- 14:27The sacrifices were really painful. It was hurting my health.
- 14:31It was hurting my relationships. I was at a really high level of stress.
- 14:35And I think a layoff is the only thing that would have gotten me out of it.
- 14:39I kept looking forward and saying to myself, there's something else.
- 14:44There's something else. I just don't know what it is. And it's too scary.
- 14:47I have young kids. I don't know how I could possibly get out of this and into
- 14:51that. I don't have a plan.
- 14:53And the layoff forced it. The layoff forced me into this space of having to
- 14:59figure out a creative way to earn income because I needed it immediately.
- 15:03I couldn't wait months and months and months for someone else to decide that I was the right fit.
- 15:09I needed to make something work because I needed to pay my bills.
- 15:14That was it, period. Like I was in a moment of, I don't have another choice.
- 15:20I have to earn income. How am I going to do it?
- 15:24And of course, during COVID, I didn't have the option of going out and going
- 15:29and finding any type of job because everything was closed.
- 15:33It wasn't like I could, you know, try to find a job in some services industry,
- 15:38there was no services industry.
- 15:41So all those options that you say are kind of your plan B, they were all gone.
- 15:46There was no plan B. So I had to reinvent.
- 15:50Okay, so back to the more spiritual side of this.
- 15:53So people say, believe it or not, I don't know if I fully believe it,
- 15:58but I like thinking this way because it gets your brain thinking a little bit more creatively.
- 16:02But people say that we've entered the age
- 16:05of Aquarius okay whatever that means to me it's
- 16:08that's what we would hear at the roller rink when I was a kid like roller skating
- 16:12on my birthday that song would come on the age of Aquarius that's my reference
- 16:18point but people say that the age of Aquarius is really this time of transformation
- 16:24breaking away from the old structures,
- 16:27the old ways, rigidity.
- 16:30It's a time of embracing innovation.
- 16:33Authenticity, like being truly honest with who you are and what you bring forward.
- 16:40And then the other part of it is community.
- 16:43Community is what is going to help you get to the other side.
- 16:47It's community with other people that have gotten laid off. It's community with
- 16:52other people that are trying to figure out a creative way to earn income.
- 16:55It's community with going out and asking people for help.
- 16:59This idea that you're not alone, which is why I wanted to do this podcast too, You're not alone.
- 17:05And I'm dealing with a version of this just because I'm leaving a fractional
- 17:09role where I was really embedded in the organization.
- 17:13And I'm feeling that same kind of level of sadness and grief, and I'm in it with you.
- 17:19And so many people are.
- 17:22So when you're having your pity party and you're putting your covers over your
- 17:26head, just know we're all here. We're all out here.
- 17:30And then the thing to crack open is how do we find each other?
- 17:35And then how do we form a community that doesn't feel weird or forced or,
- 17:40I don't know, all the things that can feel funky about community?
- 17:43How can you really find those people when you sit down with them and you're
- 17:47like, oh my gosh, I kind of feel like I'm home.
- 17:49These are my people. That's what we're looking for.
- 17:52Embrace this idea that maybe there's something bigger happening here and that's
- 17:57why you got laid off and that there's something better for you,
- 18:01something that's more aligned with who you are, more aligned with the things
- 18:04you need, where there are less sacrifices.
- 18:07Believe into that and then start searching out your community.
- 18:11So these are kind of like the four phases.
- 18:14What are the practical steps of moving forward after something like this happens?
- 18:19Okay, so the first one, like I said, phase one, just take a breath.
- 18:25Don't panic in that moment though.
- 18:28Pity party and feeling bad for yourself is different than panicking.
- 18:32So just this is when you can start making lists. What am I good at?
- 18:36What skills do I have? Who's my network?
- 18:38What are all the things that I could leverage in this moment?
- 18:43Just get them all down on paper.
- 18:46And then look at your finances and get very real about your finances.
- 18:50Because something that we do when we have a stable, comfortable job,
- 18:54and also when we have a lot of sacrifices that we're making,
- 18:58we sort of double down on giving ourselves the extras because we feel like we deserve it.
- 19:05So we sign up for clubs and we sign up for, you know, the wine club and we sign
- 19:10up for the whatever, you know, all the extras because we're like,
- 19:14well, I'm working so hard.
- 19:15I deserve it, you know. So look at all those extras that you had inflated inside
- 19:21of your budget and start cutting back.
- 19:25And I don't mean this to say like, oh, it's so sad and now you have to,
- 19:30you know, pinch pennies, but get realistic about what is required and what's an extra.
- 19:37Because I can tell you that once you stop sacrificing and you're less stressed
- 19:43out and you're more relaxed and you're more aligned, you're going to need less of those things.
- 19:48So if you're a shopper and you shop when you're stressed out or you're an eater
- 19:52and you eat when you're stressed out, that costs money.
- 19:55And so if that, and I know that there's stress around money and I don't want
- 19:59to downplay that because I
- 20:01100% know that and do not want to not give it the place that it deserves,
- 20:07but it's a different kind of stress coming out of a toxic work environment versus
- 20:11I need to get creative about where my next paycheck's coming from.
- 20:15It's a different kind of stress. So if you don't let yourself get panicked about
- 20:20that, and you let yourself breathe and reassess and then start kind of tapering down your budget.
- 20:27Then we can look at it with a very clear picture.
- 20:31Then we know, we know very, very distinctly how much money we need every month.
- 20:37And that might not be the number that you were bringing in.
- 20:40So if you had to add all those extras just to make yourself feel better,
- 20:44at the end of the day it might be a quarter of
- 20:47what you were spending if you get real about it
- 20:50of course everyone has those extras where you're like I'm not willing
- 20:53to give that up for me that's my yoga
- 20:56studio membership I'm just not willing to give that up because I don't think
- 21:00giving that up is going to make me is going to put me in a better position I
- 21:04think I need that to keep me aligned and to keep me from panicking right so
- 21:10some of those things are might be extras that you're just not willing to give up on.
- 21:15But if push came to shove, I might have to, right? And that's okay, too. I'm open to that.
- 21:22So reassess, write down all your skills, understand who your network is,
- 21:28you know, just assess your situation in terms of what could I potentially do,
- 21:34and then look at your budget.
- 21:35Maybe you'll buy yourself some extra time by pulling some things off the list.
- 21:41And then just go back to all your materials, like update your LinkedIn profile.
- 21:48Rejigger it if there's something else you really want to be focused on.
- 21:52Because when we're down in the dirt and we've got our heads down,
- 21:57we forget about some of the skills
- 21:59and some of the dreams and aspirations that we had once upon a time.
- 22:04When I work with people on career change and transition, they come to me and
- 22:10they say, I have no idea what I want to do next. I just don't want to do what I was doing.
- 22:15And it only takes me one session of asking them really pointed questions to
- 22:20get to that place where they knew all along what they wanted to do.
- 22:24They just didn't think it was possible. And so we just build a bridge from where
- 22:29they are to where they want to be.
- 22:31So if they were a lawyer and they
- 22:34what they always wanted to do was be a chef there is
- 22:37a path you can get student loans
- 22:40you can go to culinary school you can graduate from
- 22:43culinary school and you can get a job so there is a path and it might not be
- 22:48overnight and it might feel awkward and it might feel like you're giving something
- 22:54you're you're putting something you're cutting something off that you've spent
- 23:00a lot of time investing in,
- 23:02but be willing to look at it. Maybe it's going to make things better.
- 23:07So usually there's a seed of an idea, a seed of a dream, a seed of an interest
- 23:13or a passion or a skill that's been marinating in there.
- 23:17You just had to tune it down and turn it off while you're in your nine-to-five
- 23:21job, giving up everything and sacrificing everything for the steady paycheck.
- 23:26So reinvigorate those old dreams and aspirations because there might be a nugget
- 23:33in there that you haven't looked at for a while.
- 23:36Remember that freelancing, too, is a place where businesses are leaning into
- 23:41more and more, especially medium-sized businesses, because for them,
- 23:46it's cheaper than putting people on payroll.
- 23:48It's less risky. They can scale the company up and down, leaning on contractors and freelancers.
- 23:54So make sure to explore that as an option also. Also, it's a quick way to get
- 23:59in the door with companies. And then sometimes from there, they will hire people full time.
- 24:06And so that includes going to temp agencies.
- 24:08If you have any kind of technical skills, you could go to a temp agency and
- 24:12sometimes they'll put you into bigger corporations as a temp hire,
- 24:17and then they might hire you full time from there.
- 24:20So remember too that besides
- 24:23you know the pity party this idea
- 24:27of like for me yoga this idea of prioritizing
- 24:30your emotional well-being and your mental health that part
- 24:34is really important so it's not a you know
- 24:37it doesn't end in phase one but phase
- 24:40one is where you can get allow yourself to just be in
- 24:43it deep and don't try to do anything else but you
- 24:46want to make sure that as you move in this
- 24:48new direction that you're prioritizing that because if
- 24:51you've been sacrificing that for a job you might
- 24:55feel like you just need to sacrifice it for the
- 24:58next job but the ideal situation would be that you get yourself back grounded
- 25:02and aligned and then you take that to your next job or your freelance opportunity
- 25:10or your entrepreneurial you know project whatever's next.
- 25:16So when you find the thing that makes you feel more aligned and helps you get
- 25:23through tough times, like yoga for me,
- 25:27once you land on that, keep investing time into that thing for some people journaling
- 25:34or learning how to meditate or getting massages.
- 25:38And I know that might feel like a luxury, but those are the things that actually
- 25:42help you realign so that you're not in panic mode, you're not in worry mode,
- 25:47you're not in anxiety, but you're in a place where you feel centered.
- 25:51So if you show up to a job interview or you send out an application,
- 25:55it's not from desperation and anxiety. It's from, I really want this job.
- 26:01Not, I'm desperate for this job.
- 26:03Please give me this job, which isn't going to come across great in an interview.
- 26:07But if you really feel aligned and connected and a little bit more grounded
- 26:14and relaxed in the moment that you're in, those interviews are just going to go more smoothly.
- 26:20The networking is going to go more smoothly. It's not going to be panicked and rushed.
- 26:24Isn't it interesting how in the beginning of the podcast, I was so panicked
- 26:27and rushed. And now I'm like.
- 26:30Just take a breath. Reassess. Take a chill pill. Watch some Netflix.
- 26:35Relax. Get yourself aligned. Get yourself aligned with something that's going
- 26:39to be helpful to your emotional well-being. Find your community.
- 26:44And little by little, the doors will start opening.
- 26:47So I know it's not that easy. I know it's a lot easier said than done.
- 26:52But I hope that if you can try these tips and understand what the phases are
- 26:58of this journey, there will be something waiting for you on the other side.
- 27:03You're going to have to take some action, right? Once you get through that first
- 27:07phase, you have to start trying things on and exploring and playing in different
- 27:13spaces and getting creative.
- 27:15And that means taking action, right?
- 27:17Whatever level of action, doing research, updating your portfolio,
- 27:21sending out notes, networking with people.
- 27:24Those are the actions that you want to be taking from a place of emotional well-being
- 27:30centeredness alignment not from panic or worry you're gonna feel panicked and worried,
- 27:39But when that stuff comes up, just remember that doesn't help you move forward.
- 27:44Engaging in those feelings is not going to be the thing that propels you forward.
- 27:50What's going to propel you forward is knowing who you are, knowing what you
- 27:54need, knowing that you have a brain that can problem solve creatively.
- 28:00You're going to move forward. You're going to move through this.
- 28:04You're going to get through this. You have community.
- 28:06Reach out to your community. and as always I'm here for you so if you want to
