- 1:09Acts chapter 21. We said goodbye to them and left. After sailing
- 1:15straight across we came to costs. The next day we reached
- 1:19Rhodes and from there we went to Patra. There we found a ship
- 1:23that was going to Phoenicia. So we went aboard and sailed away.
- 1:27We came to where we can see Cyprus and then sailed south of
- 1:30it onto Syria. We went ashore at tyre where the ship was going to
- 1:34unload its cargo. There we found some believers and stayed with
- 1:38them a week. By the power of the Spirit. They told Paul not to go
- 1:42to Jerusalem. But when our time with him was over, we left and
- 1:45went on our way. All of them together with their wives and
- 1:48children went with us out of the city to the beach, where we all
- 1:52knelt and prayed. Then we said goodbye to one another and went
- 1:55on board the ship while they went back home. We continued our
- 2:00voyage sailing from Tyre to Ptolemais where we greeted the
- 2:03believers and stayed with them for a day. On the following day
- 2:07we left and arrived in Surya there we stayed at the house of
- 2:11Philip the evangelist, one of the seven men who had been
- 2:14chosen as helpers in Jerusalem. He had four unmarried daughters
- 2:18who proclaimed God's message. We had been there for several days
- 2:21when a prophet named Agabus arrived from Judea. He came out
- 2:25to us took Paul's belt, tied up his own feet and hands with it
- 2:29and said, This is what the Holy Spirit says, the owner of this
- 2:33belt will be tied up in this way by the Jews in Jerusalem, and
- 2:37they will hand him over to the Gentiles. When we heard this, we
- 2:41and the others there begged Paul not to go to Jerusalem. But he
- 2:44answered, what are you doing crying like this and breaking my
- 2:48heart. I am ready not only to be tied up in Jerusalem, but even
- 2:51to die there for the sake of the Lord Jesus. We could not
- 2:55convince him so we gave up and said May the Lord's will be
- 2:58done. After spending some time there we got our things ready in
- 3:03left for Jerusalem. Some of the disciples from Surya also went
- 3:07with us and took us to the house of the man we were going to stay
- 3:09with Nathan from Cyrus who had been a believer since the early
- 3:13days. When we arrived in Jerusalem, the believers
- 3:17welcomed us warmly. The next day Paul went with us to see James
- 3:21and all the church elders were present. Paul greeted them and
- 3:24gave a complete report of everything that God had done
- 3:27among the Gentiles through his work. After hearing him they all
- 3:31praised God. Then they said, Brother Paul, you can see how
- 3:35many 1000s of Jews have become believers and how devoted they
- 3:38all are to the law. They have been told that you've been
- 3:41teaching all the Jews who live in Gentile countries to abandon
- 3:44the law of Moses telling them not to circumcise their
- 3:47children, or follow the Jewish customs, they are sure to hear
- 3:51that you have arrived, what should be done, then, this is
- 3:54what we want you to do. There are four men here who have taken
- 3:57a vow, go along with them and join them in the ceremony of
- 4:00purification and pay their expenses, then they'll be able
- 4:03to shave their heads. In this way, everyone will know that
- 4:07there is no truth in any of the things that they have been told
- 4:10about you but that you yourself live in accordance with the Law
- 4:13of Moses. But as for the Gentiles who have become
- 4:15believers, we have sent them a letter telling them we decided
- 4:18that they must not eat any food that has been offered to idols
- 4:22or any blood or any animal that has been strangled, and that
- 4:25they must keep themselves from sexual immorality. So Paul took
- 4:29the men and the next day performed the ceremony of
- 4:32purification with him. Then he went into the temple and gave
- 4:35notice of how many days it would be until the end of the period
- 4:38of purification, when a sacrifice would be offered for
- 4:41each one of them. But just when the seven days were about to
- 4:44come to an end, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in
- 4:48the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and grabbed Paul,
- 4:52people of Israel they shouted help. This is the man who goes
- 4:55everywhere teaching everyone against the people of Israel,
- 4:58the law of Moses in In this temple, and now he has even
- 5:02brought some Gentiles into the temple and defiled this holy
- 5:05place. They said this because they had seen Trophimus from
- 5:08Ephesus, with Paul in the city, and they thought that Paul had
- 5:11taken him into the temple. Confusion spread through the
- 5:15whole city and the people all ran together, grabbed Paul and
- 5:18dragged him out of the temple. At once the temple doors were
- 5:22closed. The mob was trying to kill Paul, when the report was
- 5:26sent up to the commander of the Roman troops that all of
- 5:28Jerusalem was rioting at once the commander took some officers
- 5:32and soldiers and rushed down to the crowd. When the people saw
- 5:36him with the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul, the
- 5:39commander went over to Paul arrested him in ordered him to
- 5:42be bound with two Chainz. Then he asked Who is this man and
- 5:46what has he done? Some in the crowd shattered one thing,
- 5:49others something else. There was such confusion, the commander
- 5:53could not find out exactly what had happened. So he ordered his
- 5:57men to take Paul up into the fort. They got as far as the
- 6:00steps with him, and then the soldiers had to carry him
- 6:03because the mob was so wild. They were all coming after him
- 6:07and screaming kill him. As the soldiers were about to take Paul
- 6:11into the fort, he spoke to the Commander, may I say something
- 6:14to you? You speak Greek to you, the commander asked, then you
- 6:18are not that Egyptian fellow who some time ago started a
- 6:21revolution and led 4000 armed terrorists out into the desert.
- 6:25Paul answered, I am a Jew born in Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen
- 6:30of an important city, please let me speak to the people. The
- 6:34commander gave him permission. So Paul stood on the steps and
- 6:37motioned with his hand for the people to be silent. When they
- 6:40were quiet. Paul spoke to them in Hebrew,
- 6:43Acts chapter 22. My fellow Jews, listen to me as I make my
- 6:49defense before you. When they heard him speaking to them in
- 6:52Hebrew, they became even quieter, and Paul went on. I am
- 6:56a Jew, born in Tarsus in silicea, but brought up here in
- 7:00Jerusalem as a student of Gamaliel. I received strict
- 7:03instruction in the law of our ancestors, and was just as
- 7:06dedicated to God as all of you are, who are here today. I
- 7:10persecuted to the death, the people who follow this way, I
- 7:14arrested men and women and threw them into prison, the high
- 7:17priest in the whole council can prove that I am telling the
- 7:20truth. I received from them letters written to fellow Jews
- 7:23in Damascus. So I went there to arrest these people and bring
- 7:27them back in chains to Jerusalem to be punished. As I was
- 7:31traveling and coming near Damascus, about midday, a bright
- 7:34light from the sky flash suddenly around me, I fell to
- 7:38the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do
- 7:42you persecute me? Who are you, Lord, I asked. I am Jesus of
- 7:47Nazareth whom you persecute. He said to me. The men with me saw
- 7:51the light, but did not hear the voice of the one who was
- 7:54speaking to me. I asked, What shall I do, Lord. And the Lord
- 7:58said to me, get up and go into Damascus. And there you will be
- 8:02told everything that God is determined for you to do. I was
- 8:05blind because of the bright light. And so my companions took
- 8:09me by the hand and led me into Damascus. In that city was a man
- 8:13named Anand is a religious man who obeyed our law and was
- 8:17highly respected by all the Jews living there, he came to me
- 8:21stood by me and said, Brother saw, see again, at that very
- 8:26moment I saw again and looked at him. He said, The God of our
- 8:30ancestors has chosen you to know His will to see his righteous
- 8:34servant, and to hear Him speaking with his own voice, for
- 8:38you will be a witness for Him to tell everyone what you have seen
- 8:41and heard. And now why wait any longer, get up and be baptized,
- 8:46and have your sins washed away by praying to Him. I went back
- 8:50to Jerusalem. And while I was praying in the temple, I had a
- 8:53vision in which I saw the Lord and he said to me, hurry and
- 8:56leave Jerusalem quickly, because the people here will not accept
- 9:00your witness about me. Lord, I answered, they know very well
- 9:04that I went to the synagogues and arrested and beat those who
- 9:06believe in you. And when your witness Steven was put to death,
- 9:10I myself was there approving of his murder and taking care of
- 9:13the cloaks of his murderers. Go, the Lord said to me, for I will
- 9:18send you far away to the Gentiles. The people listen to
- 9:22Paul until he said this, but then they started shouting at
- 9:26the top of their voices away with him, kill him, he's not fit
- 9:30to live. They were screaming, waving their clothes and
- 9:33throwing dust up in the air. The Roman commander ordered his men
- 9:37to take Paul into the fort, and he told him to whip him in order
- 9:40to find out why the Jews were screaming like this against him.
- 9:43But when they had tied him up to be whipped, Paul said to the
- 9:46officer standing there, Is it lawful for you to whip a Roman
- 9:50citizen who hasn't even been tried for any crime? When the
- 9:54officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked him,
- 9:57What are you doing that man as a Roman citizen, So the commander
- 10:01went to Paul and asked him, tell me, are you a Roman citizen?
- 10:05Yes, answered Paul. The commander said, I became one by
- 10:09paying a large sum of money. But I am one by birth, Paul said, at
- 10:14once the men who were going to question Paul drew back from
- 10:17him. And the commander was frightened when he realized that
- 10:19Paul was a Roman citizen, and that he had put him in chains.
- 10:23The commander wanted to find out for sure what the Jews were
- 10:26accusing Paul of. So the next day he had Paul's chains taken
- 10:30off and ordered the chief priests and the whole council to
- 10:33meet and then they took Paul and made him stand before them.
- 10:38In Acts 21. Today, we got a bit of a travelogue of part of
- 10:42Paul's journey, didn't we, and the part that I'd like to bring
- 10:45to your attention is when they arrived at Surya they stayed at
- 10:50the home of Philip the evangelist. And he, by the way,
- 10:53is the same guy who baptized the eunich in chapter eight of Acts.
- 10:57Were told that Philip had four unmarried daughters who were
- 11:00what we might call today, P K's or a preacher's kids. And they
- 11:04also proclaimed God's message. That's pretty awesome that his
- 11:08kids love the Lord as much as he did. And in addition to raising
- 11:12his kids to know and serve the Lord, he was evidently an
- 11:15effective messenger of the gospel because there was a
- 11:18thriving community of believers their ancestor, Rhea, we know
- 11:22this because when Agabus prophesied and delivered the
- 11:24message from the Holy Spirit that Paul would be bound hand
- 11:27and foot in Jerusalem, a group of those people begged Paul not
- 11:31to go in this is what I think we should consider today. These
- 11:36good and loving people who cared so much for Paul that they
- 11:39begged him not to go where he'd be harmed. Were asking him to
- 11:43turn away from what God had called him to do. Did you notice
- 11:46that their motives were good in that they didn't want to see
- 11:50their friend in in some ways their pastor come to harm, and
- 11:54their pleadings were effective enough that they pro Paul's
- 11:57heart, he agonized with him, and maybe was even a bit tempted to
- 12:01heed their cries. But his reply to them revealed an even higher
- 12:05and better motive, he said, I am ready not only to be tied up in
- 12:09Jerusalem, but even to die there for the sake of the Lord Jesus.
- 12:13Wow. His aim was truly to follow God's leading the Holy Spirit's
- 12:18message to Paul through Agabus was not to dissuade Paul from
- 12:21continuing on, but to prepare him for what lay ahead. God
- 12:26wanted Paul and the other believers to know that when he
- 12:29was bound and delivered to the Gentiles, it was all a part of
- 12:33his plan. And their response was what I hope ours is when we face
- 12:38difficult times, may the Lord's will be done. There really is no
- 12:42better way to live than that. And then in Acts 22, one of the
- 12:47aspects of God in Christianity that some non believers have a
- 12:51really hard time reconciling is forgiveness, especially
- 12:55forgiveness of a particularly heinous crime. And on one level,
- 12:59I understand that difficulty. But today, we read of Paul's
- 13:03confession to the Lord that he had been responsible for the
- 13:06rest of believers. And he even held the cloaks of those who
- 13:10stoned Steven to death. But in spite of those terrible crimes,
- 13:14Jesus forgave Paul, and even made him one of the linchpins of
- 13:18the church. There's no way we can explain the depth of God's
- 13:22love for us or his enormous capacity for forgiveness. But we
- 13:27do have plenty of evidence for the reality of that forgiveness.
- 13:31If not in Paul, then in each one of us, none of us deserves the
- 13:35gift of grace that God offers, but he offers it anyway. If
- 13:39we'll only accept it, he takes the pieces of our broken lives
- 13:43and create something so much more than we could have ever
- 13:46thought possible. I'm sure it never entered Paul's mind that
- 13:50he would play the role that he has in human in church history.
- 13:54What will God do with your life? Like the song says, I can only
- 13:58imagine. What are your thoughts? Have a comment? Let me know. Go

- 14:28today, Brother Paul, you are a blessing. Thank you for your
- 14:32support.
- 14:45On this day in church history, August 6 1774, English religious
- 14:51leader and Lee and a small band of followers arrived in America
- 14:55at New York City, her sect the United Society of believers in
- 14:59Christ Second appearing is commonly known as the shakers
- 15:04and on this date in church history August 6 1966, Swiss
- 15:09reformed theologian Karl Barth wrote in a letter, since God
- 15:13does in fact, address man in his word. He obviously regards him
- 15:17as addressable in spite of the fact that man as a sinner closes
- 15:22his ears and heart to him. Well, beloved, I pray that we don't do
- 15:26that to him. I pray that we keep our ears and our hearts open to
- 15:30him. That's what this episode is about today, isn't it following
- 15:34the will of God?
- 15:43I spoke today with a man named Kerry whose wife Gina has been
- 15:47diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. And just a
- 15:50couple of years ago, their 19 year old son died. Both Kerry
- 15:53and Gina have quite a lot of anger toward God in their heart,
- 15:57both for the death of their son and for Gina's cancer. Now, I
- 16:01don't know what their level of faith is. But they do believe
- 16:05that there is a God. I don't know if they're Christians. But
- 16:08like I said, they're angry at him. So let's pray for both
- 16:12Kerry and Gina. Also, as I record this, about 5:30 In the
- 16:15afternoon, on August 5, your yesterday, Kathi had her first
- 16:19infusion today of her new cancer treatment. She and Del I believe
- 16:23are probably on their way home from City of Hope right now, as
- 16:27far as I know, the treatment went well. But that's all I
- 16:30know. So let's pray. Our heavenly Father, Lord, we do
- 16:33want to do your will, you do have a specific plan for each of
- 16:37us. And we know that your plan is much better than anything we
- 16:41could think of. So we ask you to guide our steps to guide our
- 16:45thoughts as we seek Your will for our lives. You gave us a
- 16:48general overarching plan when Jesus told the disciples
- 16:52Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
- 16:55in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
- 16:59and teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you,
- 17:03then Lord, that's quite a task on its own. But it looks
- 17:06different for each of us. So teach us Lord, what your
- 17:10specific plan is for each of us. And I pray now for Gina and
- 17:13Kerry, I pray, Lord, that if they don't know Jesus as their
- 17:17Savior, first of all, that they would come to know Him, that
- 17:21they would confess their sins, and that they would turn their
- 17:24lives over to you that they would invite you into their life
- 17:28as their Savior. I know, Lord, that you understand their pain
- 17:32and their anger and I pray that you'll reveal yourself to them
- 17:35as the loving father that you are, draw them to you. Help them
- 17:39to see how very much you love them. And if it is in your will
- 17:43bring healing to Gina. They've been told that the cancer is
- 17:47terminal, but you do have the ability to heal her. We ask for
- 17:50your will to be done in their lives, and we ask for their
- 17:54salvation. Lord, I ask that you be with Del and Kathy and I
- 17:58pray, Lord, that you keep any bad side effects at bay. I pray
- 18:01that you'll bless the Lifespring family, I thank you for them and
- 18:05for the ones that have sent mails with their thoughts about
- 18:09the future of this podcast and whatever it is, I'm going to do
- 18:13with podcasting going forward. guide my thoughts as I seek your
- 18:17will Lord, I am yours and I want to do what you want me to do. I
- 18:21pray this in Jesus name, amen. If you've got a prayer request
- 18:24or a praise please do go to prayer dot Lifespring media.com.
