Transcript
- 0:19I'm Jessica and this is the Teba K Rambles podcast where a couple
- 0:22of friends review Korean dramas and we are back full force.
- 0:26This episode I am joined by not one but two guests.
- 0:31I have Miguel and Rico with me today to review a really epic J
- 0:39drama, Alice in Borderland. Miguel and Rico, what is up?
- 0:44Yo, how's it going? Hello.
- 0:46Hello. Hello.
- 0:47Nice to be back. It's been so long since either
- 0:51of you have been on Payback and you guys have never actually
- 0:56been on together on one episode. This.
- 0:59I did like a little Avengers Assemble with you guys.
- 1:02I wanted both of you guys to watch this show and thankfully
- 1:05you both were like, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:08Let's go. So I am pumped to be here with
- 1:12both of you and to just like get going on this.
- 1:15I finished the show maybe 3540 minutes ago and I was telling
- 1:19you guys I was like wired, like walking around the house, just
- 1:22like clapping for no reason. Like it was like the end of the
- 1:26Illusionist with like Paul Giamatti, just like everything
- 1:29making connections. And I was like, Oh my God, it
- 1:33was such a time to experience the show and I did it on a
- 1:38binge. Oh my God.
- 1:41I'm just so pumped to be here and do this with you guys.
- 1:44If you guys are unfamiliar with Miguel and Rico, they are
- 1:48brothers and they have been podcast buddies and friends for
- 1:52so long. And I'm just so, so excited to
- 1:56be here. What I don't know, should we
- 1:58just like really quick, like what have you guys been up to
- 2:00like the last few months for people that maybe like caught
- 2:04the last episode you guys were on and are curious like what you
- 2:07all have been up to or? So for me, I know that people
- 2:13may recognize me from always the Critic podcast, which has not
- 2:19been going since our last episode, which was doomed to
- 2:24back in March. Life has gotten very busy in
- 2:28good ways, in good ways. So it's been very difficult to
- 2:32continue that part of what I like to do.
- 2:36But at the end of the day, although I'm not doing the pod,
- 2:41I'm still, you know, getting out there and working, living, but
- 2:45also still watching movies in in different like times that can.
- 2:51Find that. You know, it's not, it's not as
- 2:53simple as what it used to be like Thursday night.
- 2:56It's a movie, you know, like, right?
- 2:57Yeah, you don't have that schedule anymore.
- 2:59No, no, it's definitely different.
- 3:01It's like special when we go and see a movie all together with
- 3:03our friends group. Listen, what's your number one
- 3:05movie for the year and what is your favorite show, TV show that
- 3:09you've watched this year? So I think for the movie, I
- 3:14think it is doomed to. Get out for real.
- 3:18Yeah, yeah. Still, even after all this time
- 3:22so far, it's because I'll be honest with you, this year
- 3:26hasn't really been all that exciting at the movies I've I've
- 3:31gone through. I was, I was updating my yearly
- 3:33list like, you know, where do things stack up and stuff.
- 3:37And yeah, like I kind of came to the conclusion, yeah, due to
- 3:42still is the one to beat at the moment.
- 3:45I mean, there's still four months left in the year.
- 3:48Which? Plenty of time for something
- 3:50else to come out and really solidify itself.
- 3:54But yeah, that's been my movie. In terms of show, I don't really
- 3:59have a show that I can really tell you.
- 4:01I know that. I decided to go back and start
- 4:04watching The Bear again. Like I gave it a shot before but
- 4:09then like I stopped and now I'm giving it another shot.
- 4:12OK. So yeah, I'm in the middle of
- 4:14season one on that. So wow, OK, well, season one's
- 4:18great and so is season 2. Season three, we watched like
- 4:22the first three episodes and then we stopped and we haven't
- 4:24gotten back to it. So I don't know what that says
- 4:28about season three, but that's where me and Becks are.
- 4:32Me and my sister, I see. Mm hmm.
- 4:34Miguel, how about you? What you been up to?
- 4:37I've been on sabbatical. I decided to just like take most
- 4:41of the year off and just vibe like that's really been my whole
- 4:46year is just vibing. So I've been watching a lot of
- 4:49movies, like a lot of movie, like probably one to two movies
- 4:51a day for the past like three months, doing some more baking,
- 4:58watching TV, exercising, just very like everything that you
- 5:02say that you're going to do if you had the time to do it.
- 5:04That's what I've been up to mostly.
- 5:06And you're having a brat summer. Basically, yeah, yeah, it it,
- 5:09it's a whole good time. It's it's a good excellent.
- 5:12And then? I made you really got the
- 5:13challenge. Yeah.
- 5:15Then that happened and I was like, I mean.
- 5:19Oh my God. But yeah, no, reading it, it's a
- 5:23year of just straight up media consumption and it's been a
- 5:27great time, especially after the Criterion sale.
- 5:31I just went down there and just like, let me get like 2 movies.
- 5:34I left with like 20 and then I went home and that was that.
- 5:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 5:40Nice. All right, so that's our little
- 5:41update. This year has not been the
- 5:44strongest year for movies and K dramas, I will say.
- 5:48So we're not even going to bother.
- 5:50We're going to talk about AJ drama today that came out in the
- 5:53in the pandemic. So if this is your first time
- 5:56listening, what an episode to get going on.

- 6:48Thank you guys, love you guys. OK, we're going to get going on
- 6:52this big review we have here for Alice in Borderland.
- 6:55We're going to be reviewing both seasons one and two.
- 6:59So here we go. I'm going to read the My Drama
- 7:01list synopsis for seasons one and two and we'll talk about
- 7:05when it aired, the director and writer, this cast list.
- 7:09But we're really going to save the bulk of our talk for like
- 7:12what the hell actually happened in the show.
- 7:15Non spoiler and spoiler section and here we go.
- 7:19Here's the synopsis for season one.
- 7:21Adisa Yohe, a listless, jobless and video game obsessed young
- 7:25man, suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied out version of
- 7:29Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in
- 7:31dangerous games in order to survive.
- 7:34In this strange world, Adisa meets Usagi, a young woman who's
- 7:38navigating the games alone. After a dangerous game which
- 7:41tests Adisa's limits, the two set out together to unravel one
- 7:45mystery after another as they risk their lives and confront
- 7:47what it means to live. Season 2 basically picks up
- 7:51where season one left off, and here's a synopsis.
- 7:54Arisa Ryohe and Usagi Yuzaha have been pursuing the mystery
- 7:58of Borderland, risking their lives and games in order to
- 8:00survive and return to their world.
- 8:02The two of them encounter friends, foes, and the
- 8:04mastermind who controls the game at a location believed to be the
- 8:07key to unraveling the mystery. They have collected the numbered
- 8:11cards each time they won a game. All that remains are the Jack,
- 8:14Queen and King cards. The games they face this round
- 8:17will be of greater difficulty than the ones they came before.
- 8:21So this is a show that's adapted from the manga series, and I
- 8:25hope I don't butcher this Imoan no Kuni no Alice by Hado ASO.
- 8:30Did I get that? You're nodding your head,
- 8:31Miguel. You're like, yeah, yeah.
- 8:33Yeah, you got. It I tried my best and season
- 8:36one aired December 20th, 2020, so right in the pandemic.
- 8:42The thought that was our pandemic Christmas so to speak.
- 8:45On Netflix. It is a Netflix original and
- 8:48season 2 aired December 22nd. It's in its entirety December
- 8:5222nd, 2022, so two years later and each season is 8 episodes
- 8:58long. It is directed and written by
- 9:01Shinsuke Sato or Sato. This is a director who has
- 9:06directed several live action film adaptations of manga and
- 9:09anime, including The Princess Blade Gantz.
- 9:13I hope I said that right. I am a hero.
- 9:15Bleach, Inuyashigi Kingdom and its sequels.
- 9:19He does mostly films. It's pretty rare for him to do a
- 9:23drama. So for I mean, you can kind of
- 9:26tell that this feels very cinematic and extremely
- 9:30cinematic. You can feel that he's a film
- 9:33director and then the screenwriter, his or a Co
- 9:36screenwriter, is Kuramitsu Yasuko.
- 9:40She also wrote the screenplay with him.
- 9:44All right, this show stars Yamazaki Quinto.
- 9:46He plays Ryo Hai Adisu, basically Alice if you didn't
- 9:51put two and two together. The Adisu is Alice.
- 9:57Yeah. Just it's right there.
- 9:59It's right there, it's right there.
- 10:01This one was tougher for me. It's Suchiya Tao plays Usagi
- 10:07Yuzaha, and she is the white rabbit.
- 10:09She plays the rabbit. Yeah, cuz usagi means rabbit in
- 10:13Japanese. Right.
- 10:14There's no way for me to know that one like that way, so that
- 10:18took me longer. It is only if you know the
- 10:20language, then you'll understand.
- 10:22Right. Sure.
- 10:23I do not speak Japanese and I am not Japanese, but thank you,
- 10:26Miguel. Appreciate it.
- 10:28We do have a larger extended cast.
- 10:30I'm not sure if we want to go through each one or just just
- 10:35launch right into what did we think of this show?
- 10:39I kind of want to launch into it.
- 10:41Right, right, me too, cause the cast is like a moving target.
- 10:44It's two seasons of cast and some are recurring.
- 10:46I mean, a lot of them are recurring characters.
- 10:49So what did you guys think of Alice in Borderland seasons one
- 10:53and two? OK, so it was like a lot like it
- 10:58was a lot. So I, I, I, I want to say I
- 11:05really liked it. It just, it had so much going
- 11:08on. Like it's so brutally violent.
- 11:11That's the first thing that just sticks out.
- 11:13Like you got people getting shot in the face, like point blank.
- 11:17The camera is so unflinching. It you know what it kind of
- 11:20reminded me of? It kind of reminded me of like,
- 11:23have you guys like the boys? Have you seen the boys where
- 11:26people could just be walking along and then bam, like they
- 11:28explode or like they shot or so that really threw me, but I
- 11:34liked it. I think that a lot of the games,
- 11:37I like them a little more because I was at first when I
- 11:40saw the synopsis of the show because I have remembered the
- 11:42manga from a while back and I think I had read it, but it's
- 11:46been so long. And I was like, Oh well, I mean,
- 11:49it's going to be another Squid Game, another this.
- 11:50But I like that the games in this were more brain teasers.
- 11:56They were a little more engaging.
- 11:58There was a bunch of unexpected twists all the way throughout
- 12:01within the games. So even when you think you get
- 12:03the pattern down, you don't really, I don't know.
- 12:06I I liked it. I liked it.
- 12:07I thought it was really interesting all the way through.
- 12:09Just it was just really unflinchingly.
- 12:12I think your hesitancy comes from the violence of the.
- 12:16Show it's and I don't I don't mind violence, but it was just
- 12:19so like shocking. It's a very shocking show and
- 12:23for a lot of thematic spoiler ridden reasons that I can't get
- 12:27into. But headline is I really enjoyed
- 12:30it. I thought it kept me on my toes.
- 12:33The only downside is it gets very dense.
- 12:37Like it gets very dense very quickly.
- 12:39And it's just like, man, like the pacing and like the
- 12:42dialogue, just drag and drag and drag, but in a way that makes
- 12:48you look forward to getting back to the game, not let this whole
- 12:52thing be over. Does that make sense?
- 12:54Mm hmm. But anyway.
- 12:55I understand what you're saying. You're like, I can't wait for
- 12:57the show to be over. You're just like can.
- 12:59We I can't wait for this dialogue to be Yeah, yeah.
- 13:01Like it's, you know what it is, it falls into so many.
- 13:03Like it's very much a live action anime.
- 13:07Like very, very much a live action anime.
- 13:11But outside of that, I really liked it.
- 13:14It was fun, all right, Rico. I really enjoy the game aspect
- 13:20of the show. I really enjoy.
- 13:22I knew that this was going to happen.
- 13:25So the reason why is because I really enjoy the like the the
- 13:30suspense of like what does each game hold and what are the
- 13:34stakes involved with said game? So and I really like them
- 13:38deciphering like, oh, what does each suite or suit mean?
- 13:44The numbers, how how difficult the game is.
- 13:48I will agree a little bit with Miguel.
- 13:49There's a bit of dialogue that just maybe carries on a little
- 13:54too long and kind of either breaks the momentum of an
- 13:59episode or show. I still this is this is a
- 14:03criticism that I've had. And, you know, this Jessica,
- 14:07like these episodes are so long that you, I'm so used to a show
- 14:13like there's kind of like a, you know, like a cadence to episodes
- 14:18and shows. And then once it reaches a
- 14:20certain moment, you know, OK, this episode's about to end.
- 14:24And every time that this would happen on this show, it's like,
- 14:26no, there's still another 25 minutes.
- 14:28And it's like, man, like they cram so much into an episode.
- 14:33Here's one thing I will say though.
- 14:36I was not a fan of either season finale I.
- 14:41Oh, OK, OK. Season one, the way it ends, I
- 14:45was not a fan of and then season 2 I was like, kind of like
- 14:50you're losing me here, you're losing me.
- 14:53And like at at the end, like it was fine, but but for the most
- 14:58part, I enjoyed the show. There was some moments where it
- 15:01felt a little too real. And I think that has to do with
- 15:04season 2 that we'll dive more into.
- 15:08There's a certain character and certain action sequences that
- 15:12feel so real that like it almost gets to an upsetting point.
- 15:18But overall, I think that this is a interesting show.
- 15:22I think it's a clever show as well with, but it still has, you
- 15:29know, a couple of little faults here and there that don't bring
- 15:33it up to like perfect or anything, but still very
- 15:35enjoyable. OK, so I'll jump in.
- 15:38I freaking love this show. I walked in blind like I didn't
- 15:41know anything about this show. I thought Alison Bourdon was
- 15:44about zombies and I thought I was taking a risk by asking you
- 15:48guys to watch this show because I was like, Rigo doesn't like
- 15:51zombies and like, what am I going to do?
- 15:53I'm asking him to like watch this J drama like it's about
- 15:57zombies. The literally I was like, could
- 15:59not be more wrong. No zombies at all.
- 16:01This is a show about games. And as soon as I realized this
- 16:05was like a game, I was like, oh, good.
- 16:09Rico might like this more because for those who don't
- 16:12know, and my comment earlier referred to the fact that Rico
- 16:15loves games. He's very competitive.
- 16:19Yes, that is very correct. Right.
- 16:21So and we've had multiple game nights where it gets a little
- 16:29like intense because Rico's so competitive and I'm just a
- 16:35little bit about me. I don't really give a shit.
- 16:37So like I show up just to have a good time, like first fist and
- 16:40gigs, and usually our group pulls out the most complicated
- 16:46game. And so I am the person in the
- 16:48TikTok video that's like, here's trying to explain the game to so
- 16:53and so. And I'm looking clueless and I'm
- 16:57like, I just came for the food like he's so.
- 17:00No, literally, like I'll be out of I've been at these parties my
- 17:03and this is my brother, so I know what it's like.
- 17:05Like if we're playing cards and he wins a suit, he'll slap his
- 17:09hand on the cards and drag it like, you know, one of those
- 17:12goblins under a bridge. Like this is my suit or I'll be
- 17:16at a party. Like we'll all be at a party and
- 17:17I'm like, and it could be anybody.
- 17:20I'm in the same I'm in the exact same camp as Jessica.
- 17:23Like I I have a very can you start my orange like approach to
- 17:27life when it comes to games. I'll be at a party.
- 17:29I'm like and they're like, oh, I just beat you by 12 points.
- 17:32Oh, cool as a pizza here. Like right.
- 17:34I'm like, oh, that's great. Like are we starting the movie
- 17:37now? Like.
- 17:39So I thought to myself as we were, as I was watching, I was
- 17:43like, oh shit. I inadvertently picked a really
- 17:46good show for Rico because it's about really intense mind games.
- 17:51So I enjoyed this show immensely for like how simplistic it is.
- 17:58And then gradually it gets more complicated.
- 18:02And that's what you know, Miguel was saying about it gets so
- 18:07dense because in season 2 especially, and you said this on
- 18:11our text exchange, Miguel, it is a yap fest.
- 18:13Like people are constantly talking about their
- 18:18philosophical mindset to life secretary.
- 18:23Of yap, our culture and. That's all.
- 18:27It's like every face card was just a yap monster.
- 18:31It there was no in between, like you knew that you were gonna sit
- 18:35down. It was an unskippable cutscene
- 18:38'cause it's like there's, it's, it's so dense with platitudes
- 18:41and it's like anybody listening who like watches anime, you know
- 18:45exactly what it's like. It's like, oh, the sky is blue
- 18:48here, Is it blue where you are? Hemiko and interlace with all
- 18:53this stuff are very important plot points and you're like God
- 18:55damn it. Like what can I press start an
- 18:58X? Like what can I do?
- 19:01So that's what we mean by like maybe season.
- 19:04Season one was a lot more cut and dry and then season 2 it got
- 19:09into and some of it I liked and then some of it I was like bro,
- 19:13like I need to take a seat and I was already sitting like it was
- 19:18like, oh God. Oh my.
- 19:22God, I know, but overall I really enjoyed it.
- 19:25I I did not mind the season one finale or the season 2 finale.
- 19:29I was like this is par for the course.
- 19:31I'm watching AJ drama. Like I was like, I thought it
- 19:35was going to end like this really dramatic like don't,
- 19:38don't, don't. And then I also really enjoyed
- 19:45the overall thematic or reference point of Alice in
- 19:50Wonderland. Like that to me was like a like
- 19:53easy sell. I don't know about you guys, but
- 19:56like that was like, I was like, sign me up.
- 19:58Yeah, it added a really good framework to everything.
- 20:02Yeah. And so it allows you to kind of
- 20:05play around in your own head of like, OK, I know the story of
- 20:09Alice in Wonderland. How are they going to use those
- 20:11reference points in the show as I'm watching?
- 20:15You know, what's going to be called out?
- 20:17What's going to be an Easter egg for that story that you already
- 20:21know? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 20:23Even them playing each game is a different card, a different suit
- 20:29or whatever. And all of that like plays into
- 20:32like the overarching theme of Alison.
- 20:34They're referencing Alice in Wonderland.
- 20:37That in itself is a huge reference like so.
- 20:40Yeah, the structure too is like you meet like somebody called
- 20:43Hatter, so you kind of know. Had the Mad Hatter.
- 20:45Character, there's like a good like parallel to it, so you kind
- 20:49of know where you're headed. You kind of know, I, I really
- 20:51liked it because it's like it gives you more of a track than
- 20:54something like Squid Game would, because you're like, OK, after a
- 20:57while you're like, all right, where's this going?
- 20:58Like who's setting this gives you like, OK, well, we haven't
- 21:01met the queen yet. We haven't met the Hatter yet.
- 21:03We haven't met, you know, I mean.
- 21:05Exactly. I like that framework a lot.
- 21:07Yeah, I loved it. And you mentioned Squid Game
- 21:10like twice now. If you don't know, like Miguel
- 21:13is on the Squid Game review episodes.
- 21:15If you want to scroll back in your podcast feed, you can
- 21:17listen to our raw thoughts from back in the day.
- 21:19Squid Game season one. I'm definitely trying to have
- 21:22you back for Squid. Squid Game season 2, which comes
- 21:25out I think Christmas Day or the day after Christmas this year,
- 21:31Season 2 is dropping, so that's exciting.
- 21:35But I had someone in my DMS also come in there and was like, I
- 21:40think that Alice in Borderland is better than Squid Game.
- 21:44So you're the only. Person to watch Squid Game?
- 21:46Yeah, I'm going to let you guys talk that one out because I've
- 21:49never seen Squid Game. Right.
- 21:51Rico's not seen Squid Game yet. I'm sure in his lifetime he will
- 21:54see it, but. Is it better?
- 22:00You know what it is, though? It's kind of like it.
- 22:02It begs a comparison, right? But then it's kind of like
- 22:05trying to compare God. I don't know the divergent
- 22:08series to Hunger Games. Like you kind of can compare
- 22:12them, but not really like but. Hunger Games wins in that case,
- 22:15so it's. Not Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 22:16That's not. Yeah.
- 22:17All right. Sorry.
- 22:19Like. This this isn't really a spoiler
- 22:22for Squid Game. And if it is, well, you've had
- 22:25like five years to watch it. I don't know, like figure it
- 22:27out. But like I was on board until
- 22:30the Ronald McDonald wig. When the Ronald McDonald wig
- 22:33shows up, I was so incredibly out.
- 22:37I was so unbelievably out. But I think looking past that, I
- 22:42kind of like I kind of like Alice in Borderlands games
- 22:44better. Like, I like the games in this
- 22:46series better because they're more like they don't know what's
- 22:49going on. We don't know what's going on.
- 22:51Squid Games more like, oh, it's scary because it's like
- 22:53hopscotch, but you're going to like, I don't know, fall on a
- 22:56pile of broken glass. This was more like, they're kind
- 23:00of games that you know, but you. That's not a real game in the
- 23:03Squid Games. I remember I, but I you know
- 23:06what I mean. Like it's.
- 23:07A child game you played Jax? But I also want to like prefaces
- 23:10to say like. None of this is spoiling squid.
- 23:13No, none of the, none of this. I think that's another thing.
- 23:15Like it, it actually works out this way 'cause you know it.
- 23:18They're childhood games. So it's like, oh, it's like
- 23:22games you used to play, but now scary.
- 23:24Alice in Borderland kind of does that, but they put you in very
- 23:28disorienting, terrifying situations that remove it from
- 23:32the novelty of like, oh, we're playing tag and if I hit you,
- 23:37you explode. Like there's more to it than
- 23:39that. And there's so much more of a
- 23:41brain teaser element. Three or four games and you have
- 23:44to think really critically about what it is they're asking you to
- 23:46do. I, I, I think I might like at,
- 23:50at the very least from that aspect, I really like Alice in
- 23:54Borderland a lot more. Like the games are way more
- 23:56interesting to me than what was happening in Squid Game I.
- 24:00Think I liked Alice in Borderland more only because I
- 24:06didn't need cultural like you needed to know a lot about
- 24:12Korean culture and those games to understand like what the game
- 24:15was that they were playing or what even is like Dalgona and
- 24:19like what, what is that that they're doing?
- 24:21So there was a little more, there was a research threshold
- 24:25that you had to cross to appreciate the show.
- 24:28And in this one it was like, oh, we're playing chess like it was,
- 24:32it was very simple, like I said, to understand globally
- 24:38recognized games, I think. And it was a.
- 24:41Little that makes sense. Easier to come at it.
- 24:45Also I love the fantasy element. I I just I don't know if you
- 24:50guys know this about me. I am a huge fan of Alice in
- 24:52Wonderland. That was like a favorite movie
- 24:53growing up as a child, the Disney Alice in Wonderland.
- 24:56And I've always been a fan of fantasy.
- 25:00You know this about me for sure, the fantasy element.
- 25:03I'm a Lord of the Rings girly through and through.
- 25:05And so any time these things mash up, I'm there like I'm
- 25:13first in line. So this really hits some of the
- 25:17right buttons for me. I've said this on other reviews,
- 25:20I have a little violent heart. So I did not feel like the
- 25:24violence was as gruesome as maybe some other people did.
- 25:28And it's because I'm desensitized.
- 25:31I'm, I'm sorry, I'm desensitized.
- 25:33I was coming at this from like a Tarantino battle Royale of
- 25:38scale. And that's a really harsh scale.
- 25:42So in my mind, I'm like, it was, it was really brutal, but it
- 25:46wasn't that bad, you know? I love battle Royale though.
- 25:51I forgot. Oh yeah, no.
- 25:53That movie's so great. Another classic Japanese film.
- 25:56So anyway, Long story short, I really liked it and it's not for
- 26:01everyone. It is very demented, it's very
- 26:04sadistic. The games are not friendly but
- 26:07it they are easy to understand. Yeah.
- 26:10Oh yeah, they are for sure. Because like you can look at any
- 26:15game and be like, Oh, I know exactly what's happening here.
- 26:18Like there's no, there's no like what what's happening?
- 26:22Like everything is pretty much like tag a guessing game a, you
- 26:28know, whatever it is, it's, it's very simple in that nature,
- 26:33which which is good for the audience because you don't want
- 26:36to overcomplicate things for any audience.
- 26:39You want to make sure that they understand the rules really
- 26:41quick. So that way you could get to the
- 26:43action and people understand, oh, if this person doesn't do
- 26:46this, then this happens. You know, like you want for the
- 26:50audience to be quick on understanding what's happening.
- 26:55Yeah, you don't want to waste time on doing that on
- 26:57exposition. This show reminded me of The
- 26:59Matrix a lot. I don't know if you were getting
- 27:02Matrix vibes, especially because The Matrix also uses Alice in
- 27:05Wonderland as. A.
- 27:07Structure for the movie or like as a reference for the movie.
- 27:11At least in the first one, it's very heavy-handed with like,
- 27:14follow the white rabbit, Neo. And you know, yeah, it is
- 27:18follows this girl with a white rabbit tattoo.
- 27:20And like it all gets going. One pill makes you smaller, one
- 27:23makes you bigger. Like.
- 27:25Yeah, I haven't you. Don't have to think of it.
- 27:26I haven't seen. I haven't seen the Matrix since
- 27:29it came out. When he takes the red pill, he
- 27:31like looks to his right or something and there's a mirror
- 27:33there and he touches it and so it's through the looking glass.
- 27:37Alice going through the looking glass.
- 27:39It's. I didn't know that you were that
- 27:40big of a fan of Alice in Wonderland.
- 27:43Oh, yeah. It's like, yeah, like, like me
- 27:45too. Like, I love Alice in
- 27:46Wonderland. It's so good.
- 27:49Getting us back on track, this is the last question or thought
- 27:52that I had before. Maybe just wrapping up general
- 27:54things is someone also thought in my DM someone said that they
- 28:01thought K dramas were less violent and both of you guys
- 28:05have watched K drama, Not a ton of K dramas, but you guys have
- 28:08watched K dramas. Do you feel like that's true?
- 28:13From the ones that I've watched, I don't think I've seen one as
- 28:17gory as this, at least the ones that I've watched because you
- 28:21you have a list of the ones that I've seen, Jessica.
- 28:24And I don't think anything really is this far into
- 28:30violence, blood, gore. Like, I don't think it goes this
- 28:34far, at least the ones that I've seen.
- 28:36So in terms of that, yes, this is probably the most violent one
- 28:40that I've watched. Do you have thoughts, Miguel?
- 28:43I do, I think that as somebody like, I mean, I used to watch
- 28:47way more Japanese media than Korean media, but now it's kind
- 28:51of like awash, like I've watched enough of both.
- 28:53I think it, I think Japanese media in general is like
- 28:58endlessly more violent than Korean media in general just
- 29:02because there's like an, there's a couple of things like it's so
- 29:07there's this kind of sadism that runs through all Japanese
- 29:10horror. Like it's extremely sadistic,
- 29:12extremely psychological. But more than that, it's like
- 29:15they take a very cartoonish approach to it in live action
- 29:18stuff and movies and everything. And it's like heads exploding,
- 29:21people being decapitated, point blank shots.
- 29:24Like, I think it's more it's more violent in a more
- 29:28cartoonish way. Korean stuff, yeah.
- 29:32It it they Korean dramas can be very violent, but it's more in
- 29:35like a this person got mowed down by a car, this, you know,
- 29:39like someone's getting killed, like the typical very grounded,
- 29:42realistic way. But they're more like, like a
- 29:45lot of the Japanese stuff feels more like exploitation media.
- 29:48Like it's so over the top violent, you know what I mean?
- 29:51So I don't think I I think Japanese is more like Japanese
- 29:54media or Japanese dramas in general, from what I've seen are
- 29:57way more violent. What about you?
- 29:59Because you've seen a lot of Korean media.
- 30:03I would say that it's only in recent years when Netflix
- 30:06started investing in K dramas that we started getting some
- 30:12more violent K dramas. And it's really, it's almost
- 30:18like the HBO effect, right? Like this is a matter of like,
- 30:21you're changing the industry and Netflix doesn't have
- 30:26restrictions on what you can show on the platform.
- 30:30So shows like All of Us Are Dead, which is a zombie show
- 30:34about zombies, like taking over a high school and the high
- 30:37schoolers have to basically learn how to survive.
- 30:41That's a very violent, gruesome show.
- 30:43Kingdom is also of a zombie. It's Netflix K drama show and
- 30:48that one is actually very like almost prestige television, but
- 30:51it is super, super scary and gruesome as well.
- 30:55The glory, another Netflix darling, which you know, you had
- 31:00very intense scenes of bullying in that show, which you're on
- 31:03that episode as well, Miguel. I mean, you remember it was
- 31:06like. It was great, though.
- 31:08That was great television. But that was, it's weird, right?
- 31:12That that would be like, it's almost like that's the signpost
- 31:14of going global. Like a lot more Korean dramas.
- 31:18Like, correct me if I'm wrong, Korean dramas and Japanese
- 31:20dramas. We're going to see more of
- 31:22Japanese dramas because NHK just like struck a deal and so did
- 31:25Fuji TV with like we're going to get all these old dramas on
- 31:28Netflix, but they're also doing a few original ones starting
- 31:31later in the year. But like I've noticed even like
- 31:34with First Love and with a few, like they've gotten way more
- 31:37sexual. They've gotten way more like way
- 31:38more violent. They've gotten like, it's crazy
- 31:41because we don't really have an analog for that in terms of like
- 31:45there's no restriction on those dramas now, like you said,
- 31:48'cause it's on this platform, but it's like, did they get this
- 31:50way because they're on the platform or would they have
- 31:53gotten that way on a less censored network?
- 31:56You know what I mean? Like this emergence of just like
- 31:59more extreme themes across the board is really interesting.
- 32:03But you're right, they only. And we can't discount Squid Game
- 32:06either, but. Yeah.
- 32:09That became the first big phenomenon that it could have.
- 32:13It could have, well, not ramifications, but more of a big
- 32:18influence going forward in terms of how international shows
- 32:23decide to make their programming and how they, again, with
- 32:27Netflix also being kind of like, yeah, you could do anything
- 32:30here, pretty much. So yeah, I think that shows.
- 32:35Yeah, it's wide open now. So is there anything else you
- 32:39guys wanted to say generally about the show?
- 32:42Like, did you like Arisa as a character?
- 32:46He's our protagonist. Or Alice.
- 32:49Yeah, I enjoyed him as a character.
- 32:52I did enjoy him as being tactical, being resourceful,
- 32:59leaning on his gaming knowledge and just like that smarts that
- 33:04he has to try to figure out the games.
- 33:07And that's something that I really enjoyed as I was watching
- 33:10it is whenever a new game would come up, I would be like, OK, so
- 33:13how is Arizona gonna figure out how the game is played and how
- 33:18to win it? You know, his strategy was
- 33:21always like really cool to the point that even one of the
- 33:24characters like later on in the show basically is like his
- 33:29probably you can bet on him are you can bet on him.
- 33:31His probablys are. They're they're worth their
- 33:34weight in gold. So like, yeah, that's how cool
- 33:38it was to be able to see him figure out that stuff.
- 33:40So I really enjoyed the character.
- 33:41I thought it was pretty cool, like he was.
- 33:45I mean, he's alright basically for all the reasons that Rico
- 33:49mentioned, honestly, like I like that he took the time to
- 33:52actually figure stuff out instead of just running straight
- 33:55into the game. He's he's not really my favorite
- 33:59character honestly, but I like him.
- 34:03I think he's cool. I think he's a more, he's an
- 34:04interesting enough protagonist and like he just kept things
- 34:07moving pretty well. So I'm yeah, I like him.
- 34:10And his arc, his character arc and how he asks really tough
- 34:16questions throughout the show in the games did that.
- 34:20Work for you guys? Or was it kind of like I'm done?
- 34:24But only when they peeled back like his back story, because
- 34:28that's one thing that they took a while with her.
- 34:30I think we were, we were four episodes in before we started
- 34:34getting some back story. But once his arc became really
- 34:37apparent, I liked it, like it. It makes sense.
- 34:41It makes sense that he kind of what he did.
- 34:44I, I think my biggest qualm was, and this is probably almost like
- 34:49how I felt regular audience members would think is like it
- 34:53takes a while to get to its reveal.
- 34:57As to the why of it, that was my biggest question on the show is
- 35:02the why. Like all this action is cool,
- 35:05the games are great, why, Why is it happening?
- 35:10Who's controlling it, all that stuff.
- 35:13And I think the the show kind of takes its time getting there
- 35:17depending on your mileage, like it could either be a really cool
- 35:22tense, you know, build up to that, or it could be like, wow,
- 35:26they're kind of dragging their feet and not getting to that,
- 35:30which is what aerosol wants. But also the audience wants they
- 35:34want to know the back story, like why is this happening?
- 35:38And I, I was kind of teetering there as like the show's not
- 35:41getting there quick enough. They're they're doing everything
- 35:46just games, games, games, but not giving us even like a hook
- 35:50of like, oh, this could be the reason why that it's happening.
- 35:54And so that's what I would say is probably my my nitpick of the
- 35:58show. I actually like that, though.
- 36:01I actually did like that. Like I like that they were.
- 36:04It was something very elusive. I don't like it when a show is
- 36:07like Oh my God, do you guys remember Lost?
- 36:10Bro I was just about to bring it up.
- 36:12Yes, I watched it. But yes.
- 36:14Like it's like this moving target like every time because
- 36:17it's like Desipeta or rather like it.
- 36:19Like it gets on your nerves, you know what I mean?
- 36:21It's like, yes. Maybe This is why.
- 36:23No, that's not why. Maybe This is why.
- 36:25No, that no, I like that you were like in anguish and
- 36:28suffering with the characters, like they're experiencing like
- 36:31this complete and total devastation and they're in the
- 36:34dark like like you have to ask why, And I think that worked for
- 36:38me. I'd rather like be in it with
- 36:41them wondering why it's happening than to present a
- 36:44bunch of oh like and then it's a fake out like.
- 36:48And they make fun of that. They owe.
- 36:50Last episode. They're like.
- 36:54Oh, you want to know why? Here's why.
- 36:56Oh well, just kidding. Here's why.
- 36:57It gets philosophical and really dark really quickly too.
- 37:01If you I, I wonder if you guys kind of picked up on the pattern
- 37:03of the characters before the reveal, but I don't know if
- 37:07we're in the spoiler space yet, so no.
- 37:09No, no, we're not in the spoiler space yet.
- 37:11But I love that you talked about loss and mentioned it because I
- 37:14feel like that's a spiritual cousin to this show and maybe
- 37:19this this content as well as, you know, these characters going
- 37:24through like existential crises and surviving dire circumstances
- 37:30in the games. But then you also get thrown
- 37:32back into their backstories and flashback sequences throughout
- 37:37so that you better understand them.
- 37:39And you even get that from those characters that are leading the
- 37:43games, those that created that certain game, like the, you
- 37:48know, the King of Clubs or whatever, all these, all these
- 37:50people get some sort of back story.
- 37:53There's very few that don't. And the ones that don't are
- 38:00basically thriving in the games. Making a name for themselves in
- 38:03there. Yeah, they're the only
- 38:04characters that like, love and want to be in the games, or
- 38:10they're nihilists and they think life is meaningless.
- 38:14Then they're just like. Life doesn't matter, everything
- 38:18is going to shit so who cares? Right, right.
- 38:23Yeah. But mostly everybody else gets a
- 38:25back story. And I I thought it worked and I
- 38:30thought that eight episodes per season worked.
- 38:33And I know that Rico is not quite used to the length of
- 38:37these episodes, but the length didn't really bother me at all.
- 38:40Especially the first season, that was like my sweet spot
- 38:42because each episode was like 4750 minutes around there.
- 38:47And then the second season, they took it to a full hour.
- 38:50And then I was like, OK, you're at my Max now.
- 38:54It was like an hour, hour 10. Yeah, the last episode was an
- 38:59hour and 20 minutes. And I was like, oh hard.
- 39:03Oh, I know because I was on a time crunch because I I was
- 39:07watching the last three episodes.
- 39:09Hold on, let me see how long. And episode 6 was an hour 5,
- 39:15then 59 minutes for episode 7 and an hour 20 for episode 8.
- 39:19And I was like, oh God, I got it so.
- 39:22The Season 2 they bumped up the times on season 2, which I
- 39:28don't. I'm not sure if they necessarily
- 39:30needed to do that. I think they could have easily
- 39:33trimmed down 10 minutes off of each episode.
- 39:36It would have been fine. Maybe even better.
- 39:38Maybe even a better show, I don't know, but yeah.
- 39:41I'm all for brevity, so no. Yeah, like, me too.
- 39:44There were moments where, like they would drag out somebody
- 39:48walking from one spot to another.
- 39:50And it's like, let's help them out a little bit, just a little
- 39:53bit. You know, those little like,
- 39:55little things like that brings it down.
- 39:58And then we're we're on a good pace.
- 40:00Momentum keeps going the way it should be.
- 40:03In a show like this where action is key, you want momentum on
- 40:07your side. You don't want to stall the
- 40:09momentum. So.
- 40:10Yeah. All right, so I think we're
- 40:14ready to get into spoilers, but before we do, what would you
- 40:17give this show out of five soulju bottles?
- 40:20Or maybe sake sake. Or sake bottles.
- 40:24Yes, yes, yes. I think I am going to settle.
- 40:28Wait, Miguel said four. What?
- 40:31You both said four. I said 4.
- 40:34I said four, I'll give it 4. Out of five.
- 40:36I'll give it four out of five. Right.
- 40:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. Four out of five.
- 40:39Four sake bottles out of five. Yeah, same.
- 40:43I'll give it four out of five. It's fours across the board
- 40:48because I, well, I'll go ahead and give a four and. 1/2 OK, OK,
- 40:53you needed to be. Just to be fresh.
- 40:56Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Just to be fresh, I'll give you
- 40:594 1/2. I think I liked it better than
- 41:01than you guys. But four out of five is a really
- 41:05high score. I think that's really You guys
- 41:08really liked it, Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I really enjoyed the
- 41:11show. I really enjoyed the ride that
- 41:14it was taking me on. Yeah.
- 41:16I'm really interested to talk about like some of the more you
- 41:20know, one of the some of the details if you're in spoilers
- 41:24once we get to it. Perfect.
- 41:26And that's exactly what we're going to do right after this.
- 41:30Excuse me, I can't tell. I can't tell you know.
- 41:35I have no tingle. Oh, sorry, swear.
- 41:38Discussing shirts. What?
- 41:44All right, we're on the other side of spoilers.
- 41:46We are going to spoil both seasons of Alice in Borderlands.
- 41:49So if you want to preserve your first watch, stop now and come
- 41:53back later to finish listening to the episode.
- 41:55And if you don't care about spoilers, then keep listening.
- 41:58All right, so in season one, we're going to start in season
- 42:01one. So season one, episode one, I
- 42:04lost my shit in the 1st 10 minutes because 10 minutes into
- 42:07this episode, they do this crazy wonder of them getting off the
- 42:11street in Shibuya and ducking into the subway station because
- 42:15the cops are onto them and they lock themselves inside a
- 42:17bathroom stall. All of this time they don't cut
- 42:20the camera, there's no cuts yet. And then them emerging from a
- 42:27suddenly totally empty bathroom, suddenly totally empty subway
- 42:32entrance and the intersection outside, which is super famous
- 42:36in Tokyo, completely empty. That whole sequence.
- 42:41I was like, we can stop right now.
- 42:43I I'm already locked in, totally locked into this show.
- 42:50You got me. So how did you guys feel about
- 42:52that? It was a very good introduction
- 42:55to the world like because it it provides enough interest and
- 42:59intrigue as to whoa, where did everybody go?
- 43:03How are you going to explain what happens to all these people
- 43:07out of nowhere? They're they disappeared.
- 43:10And I really enjoyed the aspect of walking out to Shibuya
- 43:16station and there's nobody. And so I had to look up how they
- 43:20did it just because like, this was it was throwing me off.
- 43:24I was like, there's no way they could have like gotten the
- 43:28people or the city of Shibuya, you know, to like, go ahead and
- 43:32just hey, for this day we're going to go, you know, film and
- 43:36we're going to shut off. So I had to look it up and like
- 43:41they did some pretty really good CGI stuff, but there was some
- 43:45practical stuff to it. But overall, I think it was a
- 43:48good way of just hooking you into the show.
- 43:51Yeah, yeah. I think so.
- 43:53So I think it was a really good nerve racking start.
- 43:55I love that it was only 1 take, but it also it puts you on edge
- 44:00immediately, like when they're running, when they realize, oh,
- 44:03everybody already crossed and all these cars are just flying
- 44:06by and they're just dodging them and like I loved it.
- 44:09It was so stressful. It's.
- 44:11Super stressful, yeah. And you think they're going to
- 44:13get run over and they duck into the station.
- 44:15Mowed down by a car and then when someone's like banging on
- 44:19the door. Yeah, I was thinking like
- 44:21someone's on the stall door, the stall, and no, no, no.
- 44:24It was such a great intro into They're in the Borderlands.
- 44:28No, So also I always will love the visual of people running
- 44:34through empty streets in a city in an urban environment.
- 44:38That will always be an amazing visual to me.
- 44:40It's always going to give Walking Dead episode one.
- 44:43It's always going to give 28 days Later.
- 44:45It's like, it is like such an impressive thing to do and they
- 44:49do it in the show. I love it.
- 44:52It's really cool. It's giving COVID.
- 44:54It's giving like March 30th, 2020.
- 44:57Stop. It in Times Square, all that.
- 44:59Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, but the one thing that I
- 45:02couldn't get over for like the entirety of the show, and then
- 45:04it was like explained at the end of the show and we'll talk about
- 45:07it later. But I was like, this is supposed
- 45:09to be set in 2021. Where the hell is the pandemic?
- 45:13Yeah, great question. Great question.
- 45:17Wishful thinking. Wish.
- 45:21No, I I think that they got to the point where they just were
- 45:26like. It's summer 2020.
- 45:28One right? We're just gonna ride around it.
- 45:32We're not gonna, we're not even gonna try to deal with like all
- 45:36of this that's happening in the world.
- 45:38We already have enough. That's in our show.
- 45:42We can't add this other element. No, but their first game.
- 45:47So their first game is in episode one.
- 45:49It is the three of clubs that they enter.
- 45:52This is a good game. I totally thought that his
- 45:57friends were going to last longer.
- 45:59In the grand scheme of the show. Were you guys under this
- 46:02impression as well? Like they make it.
- 46:04Through three. Clubs, which is really cool.
- 46:07He uses math basically Arista uses math to get out of the
- 46:14rooms and figure out that if they're in a square building and
- 46:18the length of the car that was outside is the same as his dad's
- 46:22car. So he knows like the exact, he
- 46:24measured the shit out of it. I mean, he just, it was, I
- 46:28thought it was going to be like that every game that he was
- 46:30going to have to use his math skills.
- 46:31They were showing his room in the 1st 10 minutes of the show
- 46:35and there were a lot of math books in his room.
- 46:39So I was like, oh, so he's like a mathematician.
- 46:41He's super smart is what I gathered.
- 46:44But that wasn't the case at all. Like that was just for that
- 46:46first game that he could math his way out of it.
- 46:50So episode 2 comes round, they got the 8 of Spades game which
- 46:55is tag, and this is when they find out that the suit of the
- 47:00playing card means what kind of game it's going to be.
- 47:02Clubs is a team battle, Diamond is you have to use your wits and
- 47:07then Spades is physical hearts, the worst one because you're
- 47:12playing with people's hearts and then tear them apart.
- 47:14It is something having to do with an emotional.
- 47:19It's just heinous. It's just absolute.
- 47:21Mind games all the way through. It's awful.
- 47:24It's awful, but that's when we find out the system to the
- 47:30playing cards. And then of course, the
- 47:32increasing numbers means increasing difficulty.
- 47:35Higher the number, higher the difficulty.
- 47:37I thought Shibuki, which was the female character who was in
- 47:41their group. In the first few episodes, I had
- 47:44a lot of issues with this character.
- 47:46Did you guys have a lot of issues with this character or
- 47:48were you just kind of like going with the flow with her?
- 47:51I just didn't trust her right off rip.
- 47:53Bro like. Yeah, like immediately I didn't
- 47:56trust her. I was like, like, why are you
- 47:58here? How are you?
- 48:00Who are you going to betray? When are you going to do it?
- 48:03Like immediately. Did you feel some kind of way,
- 48:06Rico? Like, was it just me and Miguel?
- 48:07Like who is this? I don't think I really felt
- 48:11anything towards her like crazy, like the way like you guys have.
- 48:16We read a lot into it. Yeah.
- 48:19And I do read as as strongly into her as as you guys did.
- 48:25I don't know, maybe I was just going with the ride or the flow
- 48:27of the show, but like it didn't really like grab hold of me or
- 48:31anything like. That, well, we're seeing a lot.
- 48:33I was just thinking like a video game, like, like, 'cause I was
- 48:37like, OK, like the first games, like a tutorial.
- 48:41In every video game, somebody shows up and they either get
- 48:43killed or they try to betray you.
- 48:45So immediately I was just like not trusting.
- 48:49So I was like ready for her to like, oh, OK, this is going to
- 48:51be the first person. And but then you know.
- 48:55So this is what, this is what I was like, really just so
- 48:59confused about her character and, and I'll save my piece and
- 49:02then we'll move on because there's a lot left of the show.
- 49:04This is like, in the grand scheme of things, that doesn't
- 49:05mean that much. But Shibuki says some people
- 49:08like being the strongest ones in their group.
- 49:10That makes them feel better. And I was like, Dang, like,
- 49:14that's the first little, like, philosophical nugget that we
- 49:16get. That's commenting on the human
- 49:19condition, right? Where she's hanging out with,
- 49:24like, the runt of the group. Like the third friend who got
- 49:28injured in the first game. He's saying, like, you know, my
- 49:31friends have always been stronger than me, and they've
- 49:33been such good friends to me and all this stuff.
- 49:35And she says that to him. And I was like, is she trying to
- 49:40break up the band? Like I was like what is this
- 49:42bitch saying so? Which she kind of felt like she
- 49:44was, yeah. She's just like that, Yeah.
- 49:47They want to feel superior and stronger to you, so that's why
- 49:50they keep you around. And I was like, what the fuck?
- 49:53Then she goes on to clearly seduce him.
- 49:58Like she's ingratiating herself with this weaker character.
- 50:04And I was like to what end? Like I was so confused.
- 50:06Like because he's not a good ally.
- 50:09Like he's clearly injured. He can't do anything in the
- 50:11games anymore, so why would? He.
- 50:15Right. So I, I could not understand why
- 50:18she was doing this. He's not formidable in the game.
- 50:22It's not a a strategic. Ally, I didn't get it.
- 50:25So I thought, oh, she's doing all of this to kill him.
- 50:29Why? I was like, why have sex with a
- 50:32virgin? Why deflower this sadly damaged
- 50:35dude who has clearly a complicated relationship with
- 50:38sex due to his own religious trauma and watching his mother
- 50:42pay to go in to have sex with this crusty cult leader.
- 50:46I was like, is she OK? Like I was like, she's a
- 50:49villain. So I was like, either she's a
- 50:52villain and trying to kill him, or she's just a nymphomaniac and
- 50:56trying to like get it out of her system.
- 50:59And either way, it was so manipulative to me.
- 51:03I don't, I just didn't get it. I honestly didn't.
- 51:06And that was, that was one of the first situations where I was
- 51:09like, OK, like we need to kind of like move this along because
- 51:12there's going to be like, right. Yeah, like there's this
- 51:16character, bro, they Juke us with this character because
- 51:19Episode 3 comes in, we get our first Hearts game, it's the
- 51:23Seven of Hearts game, it's the hide and seek game, and this is
- 51:28where the friends die and Shibuki so.
- 51:32That took me. Out bro, this was a bad, bad
- 51:36episode. Not bad as in like I didn't like
- 51:38the episode. Bad as in like, you're wrecked?
- 51:40Yeah, I mean, he just, I like, I like the way that this episode
- 51:45really set up how the rest of the show was going to be like.
- 51:48You don't First, I like the misdirection because they do.
- 51:52They do a hide and seek game, but it's like sheep and sheep
- 51:55and wolf type of thing. 3 sheep, one wolf and like the whole it
- 52:01it's just a reverse order thing. The wolf should be hiding
- 52:03because if he can run out the time, the sheep will explode.
- 52:07And he'll win. So I like that there was that
- 52:09kind of turnabout to it. It kept things interesting
- 52:12instead of forcing somebody. It's like that really shows how
- 52:16it really established the whole like messing with your heart
- 52:19thing. It's like, well, you have to run
- 52:21away from these people knowing that they're going to explode
- 52:25and die. Like, you know what I mean?
- 52:27Just. Their deaths are definitely on
- 52:30your hands because at any. Point they're on.
- 52:32You could have sawed them out and you could have looked them
- 52:35in their eyes. Exactly.
- 52:36And I mean, that's layered too, right?
- 52:38Like. Eyes window to the.
- 52:40Soul someone in the face, like, hey, look at me and look at what
- 52:44you're going to do to me instead.
- 52:45And like, there's a commentary in there somewhere about how we
- 52:48could look away and everybody suffers.
- 52:49And but I like the No, I didn't like, I like his friends seem
- 52:53pretty like pretty cool characters.
- 52:55I wanted. I would have liked to see more
- 52:56of them, honestly. Yeah, But I do.
- 53:00I mean, you know what? For as long as the show, when we
- 53:05could have had them for at least two more episodes, honestly,
- 53:09especially considering some of the stuff that happens later.
- 53:11But the shock value of like, no, they're dead.
- 53:14Like that's it. Like we're going to keep going.
- 53:16I think it was important that they do that to establish how
- 53:19relentless the world they're in is.
- 53:22I personally wish that if, if you're going to do that of
- 53:28shocking your audience and losing critical characters, that
- 53:34you would have done it like in episode 7 before the finale,
- 53:39like really draw it out, really get your really get connected to
- 53:42these characters because in such a short season, only eight
- 53:46episodes in a season, you don't have as much time to develop the
- 53:51relationships with the characters that you're watching.
- 53:54And especially since a lot of people binge these shows, it,
- 53:58it's not as quick as like, Oh, I fell in love with this
- 54:02character. And that doesn't really happen
- 54:04all that often if you're binging a show and by hour 3, like a
- 54:09character dies who's supposed to be pivotal.
- 54:12But I've only been watching the show for three hours.
- 54:15I'm enjoying it. But like, that character death
- 54:17did not signify or did not become as impactful as it could
- 54:22have if you just draw it out a little bit more.
- 54:25So that way you have like, that shock going into the season
- 54:28finale. That is something that I think
- 54:31would have benefited the show because I think those characters
- 54:35are very good characters. So that's why I think they just
- 54:39missed out on that opportunity possibly.
- 54:41Yeah, they were really strong. And that's why I was so
- 54:43surprised that they killed him off in Episode 3.
- 54:47The scene of them counting down, you know, to the end of the game
- 54:52and the flashbacks of them, you know, cheering him up and just
- 54:56being young together. Heartbreaking.
- 55:00And then Artis screams and wails once.
- 55:05It happens once the the little bombs and their neck braces go
- 55:08off. He just wails until he's hoarse.
- 55:11And I mean that was. Yeah.
- 55:13And then cut to like, that's the end of the episode, credits
- 55:16rolling and I'm like, what the hell, Like you just they.
- 55:19Really know how to get you there?
- 55:20Yeah. I had to watch like 3 episodes
- 55:23of Family Guy to wipe that before bed.
- 55:25I saw that like at midnight and I'm just like, I'm not going to
- 55:28bed after this, I'll tell you that.
- 55:29Free like I'm just. Going to watch something else?
- 55:32To clear, you need a palate cleanser.
- 55:34After that, I was like, oh boy, that it was.
- 55:37It was well done though. It was, I mean.
- 55:40It was well done just so early, like done very early.
- 55:45And they give him, you know that that reason to live.
- 55:50And this is a a trope, right? Like when people are about to
- 55:54die, they're on their deathbed and they give you a mandate to
- 55:57live well, live in their place, you know, do what they couldn't
- 56:01do. The person who lives or survives
- 56:05definitely has to do what they said, like you have to do
- 56:09whatever a dying person wishes for.
- 56:12You can't waste the life. No, exactly.
- 56:14Literally no. So you knew that he was going to
- 56:17suffer for the loss but also use it as fuel to live, right?
- 56:24I think that's that was the purpose of it in the plot.
- 56:28But I still think the characters were super strong and it was
- 56:34hard to let go of them. So we get to episode 4.
- 56:38It is the four of clubs game, the distance one this one I
- 56:42could have done without this game.
- 56:44I got to be quite honest with you.
- 56:45This is the one where they're in the tunnel and they.
- 56:47Just like run. In One Direction away from the
- 56:52goal basically, and then there is a flood that happens in this
- 56:59tunnel. Just towards the yeah at the end
- 57:01of the tunnel. It it was probably the weakest
- 57:04game out of all watching the show.
- 57:07Like there's so much that they could have done.
- 57:09Panther at one point that was mauling.
- 57:12Like I heard the growling and I was like, are they even about to
- 57:15like just have like a a wolf in here?
- 57:17Right, right. And it was a Panther or
- 57:19whatever. And I was just like, this is
- 57:23this is not the strongest game so far in this show, right?
- 57:27I think the reveal was one of my favorites though, like it's it
- 57:31was a weak game. The Panther was just like, OK,
- 57:33like, all right, but you know, everything now I'm thinking
- 57:38about everything comes back to just the pacing of the show
- 57:40because they they could have used.
- 57:43I love the review that they get to the other end and it's like,
- 57:46oh, we're running away from the goal.
- 57:48Like, 'cause it didn't give them a plus, it didn't give them a
- 57:50minus. I found that really interesting
- 57:52because it's like, oh, this like this world means business.
- 57:55If you didn't know it already, like nothing's going to be what
- 57:57you expect. Nothing's.
- 57:59And I don't know, I liked it, but I feel like they could have
- 58:02used all that time in that episode to establish, you know
- 58:07what I mean? Like I feel like they didn't use
- 58:08that time to it's potential considering it was an hour long
- 58:12episode and that was the only game that was in it.
- 58:15I mean, he he really the purpose of that episode was to meet the
- 58:19white Rabbit Usagi and fair hurt to basically save him from just
- 58:25dying out in the elements and. Letting.
- 58:27Starfish take him but then they do this for of clubs game and
- 58:32that's their first game together.
- 58:33Yes. Still not my favorite game.
- 58:36Anyway, we get to episode 5 and they find the beach and I was
- 58:41having flashbacks of Leonardo Dicaprio's beach movie.
- 58:47Do you have you guys watched that movie?
- 58:49I remember that. Yeah, I.
- 58:50Remember OK like this isolated cult that leads a utopia esque
- 58:54existence. As much sex, drugs and alcohol
- 58:57as you want. No locks on the doors, no
- 58:58secrets. You just can't really tell other
- 59:02people about the beach. I was like, oh, this is the
- 59:06beach, only not the beach. The rules were nuts.
- 59:13I mean, the scene of them meeting the Mad Hatter is a
- 59:16really. I thought that was a great scene
- 59:19of them being threatened to basically join the beach or you
- 59:25die. You share all the cards you earn
- 59:28or you die. You know, you get this concept
- 59:33of if we collect all of the cards, we might get out.
- 59:38How did you, how did you guys feel about that like?
- 59:42Of collecting the cards and getting out or the beach.
- 59:44No collecting the cards and getting out.
- 59:46I thought it made sense. I like I was with Arisa, like I
- 59:48was like, there's some logic to it that if we, if you collect or
- 59:55win the games, survive. To the.
- 1:00:00Game you get to get out. Yeah, there's logic to it.
- 1:00:03And I think that them working together as a unit to collect
- 1:00:08the cards made sense. Now getting to the end and
- 1:00:12they're like, OK, so who gets to who gets to present the card?
- 1:00:15That was hysterical. To me, if that is the case, that
- 1:00:18it's like, yeah, so, oh, right, only one of us can leave, not
- 1:00:23all of us. It was.
- 1:00:26Like yes I'm the one that gets to leave.
- 1:00:31The mad Hatter was like mad as fuck bro.
- 1:00:33Like he was when he showed up in a kimono in board shorts.
- 1:00:38I was like I could not love this show more right now.
- 1:00:41Like the Mad Hatter is mad. Shit was wild.
- 1:00:46Everybody has to wear bathing suits at the beach.
- 1:00:48I was like. That way it doesn't like.
- 1:00:52Nobody. Can hide A weapon.
- 1:00:54Right. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:00:55So it's the thing that cracked me and a friend of mine up about
- 1:00:59the beach is that there's this anime trope called the beach
- 1:01:02episode. And it's like, yeah, like it's
- 1:01:06every, every anime has a beach episode.
- 1:01:08It's it's usually non canonical. It has extra humor in it.
- 1:01:12Like we're talking like. We're talking like.
- 1:01:16It is like normally like it's like, hey, let's go to the beach
- 1:01:19today. So it's like Dragon Ball has
- 1:01:20one, Salem one, like all of them have one, and it's all these
- 1:01:24characters are at the beach. So you'll have all the heroes
- 1:01:26there and then the villains will be there like buying ice cream
- 1:01:28or doing something innocuous. And it's really just a
- 1:01:31fanservice Y way of getting all the characters into their
- 1:01:34bathing suits. So when they got to the beach,
- 1:01:37I'm like, don't tell me this is the beach episode.
- 1:01:39But no, it turned into a plot. So I was like, OK, I guess we're
- 1:01:43at the beach now. And that, I mean, OK.
- 1:01:48I do like it, though, because it added like this creepiness that
- 1:01:50reminded me of like, Battle Royale, Suicide Club.
- 1:01:53They're all like, Oh yeah, let's play the next game.
- 1:01:56Like, And then they're all just being killed off anyway.
- 1:01:59Yeah. It was like a fun contrast, like
- 1:02:02everyone running straight to their death but trying to have a
- 1:02:04good time. And I mean, some.
- 1:02:05I liked it. It was interesting.
- 1:02:08I have. So episode 6 and seven, my notes
- 1:02:11are combined for these two episodes.
- 1:02:13You have this ploy to get all the cards because the Oh my God
- 1:02:19I forgot his name. But the big dude in a wife
- 1:02:24beater kills his best friend the Hatter and takes over the beach.
- 1:02:30And it's only a matter of time before the beach self destructs
- 1:02:33because basically all the rapists and murderers are now in
- 1:02:37charge. This guy like Oh my God, it's
- 1:02:41GCUI think is his name. Oh, Chisia.
- 1:02:45Chisia. Chisia, the blonde guy.
- 1:02:48Yes. Is it helpful if I just call him
- 1:02:50the? Blonde with the blonde dude.
- 1:02:51The Michael Jackson looking one that never smiles like.
- 1:02:55Yes, him, yeah. So.
- 1:02:59That guy was like a trope and 1/2 he cracked me up.
- 1:03:02Like I was like, no. So this guy to see slash Michael
- 1:03:09Jackson over here, the blonde guy, I called him a weasel in my
- 1:03:14notes because he tricks Adisa to steal the beach's cards and then
- 1:03:19he takes them for himself and Adisa gets like pummeled and
- 1:03:24thrown in a room to wait out the rest of his visa and basically
- 1:03:27get lasered, right? But then, plot twist, the beach
- 1:03:32becomes an arena. I loved this twist.
- 1:03:36That was so good. That was great, yeah.
- 1:03:39That was great 'cause it was the first time that it's like, I
- 1:03:42loved it because it was the first time.
- 1:03:44And now that we know, you know, kind of who was in charge of the
- 1:03:46game in a roundabout way, like it was the first time, it's
- 1:03:50like, OK, Audrey Sue's there now.
- 1:03:52Cool. Let's lock this shit down.
- 1:03:54Like, your little sanctuary's over.
- 1:03:56Like, you're gonna fight there. Like, you can't just hide at
- 1:03:59this resort. Like, that was so terrifying.
- 1:04:02And the fact that, like, Hikaru almost walked through it.
- 1:04:06Yes. Like, yeah.
- 1:04:07And. And they just, like, threw a pen
- 1:04:09and it just blew up. And they're like, Oh, no.
- 1:04:12Right, right. Terrifying.
- 1:04:13I know, I know. Oh, but this is also like around
- 1:04:16the time we didn't even talk about these two characters.
- 1:04:19We talked about MJ for a minute, but we didn't talk about the
- 1:04:23train. We didn't talk about Hikati
- 1:04:25Slash in. I think I also the name is
- 1:04:29Queena. Queena.
- 1:04:31Oh, the train characterist, yes. Yes, which I.
- 1:04:35Yes, yes, yes, yes. Loved that storyline.
- 1:04:38Iconic. So good storyline on that one.
- 1:04:40Damn good back story and storyline and I love that
- 1:04:43character so kick ass. She might be probably my
- 1:04:47favorite character outside of The Who is this girl The one who
- 1:04:52was the the autopsy girl? The Anne, The yes Anne.
- 1:04:57I loved Anne too. Oh, we'll just call her CSI.
- 1:04:59Forensic whatever. Yeah.
- 1:05:01CSI. Yeah, because she was like part
- 1:05:03of CSI. That was her day job.
- 1:05:05Yeah, so we got girl. CSI was, so we got hold on, so
- 1:05:08we got CSI for Anne. We have Michael Jackson, we had
- 1:05:15obviously, we have Arisot, who's Alice, and then we have the
- 1:05:18White Rabbit. As for Saggy, yeah, the.
- 1:05:24Guy wearing the wife Peter. The guy wearing the.
- 1:05:27Wife Peter for damn. What is his name?
- 1:05:31Aguna. I am blanking on his name.
- 1:05:32Aguna. That's what it was.
- 1:05:34Aguna. Aguna.
- 1:05:35Thank you, Aguni. Yes.
- 1:05:37Is wife. Peter.
- 1:05:38I mean, I kind of was referencing him as basically the
- 1:05:41rapist. Oh yeah, he's the rapist.
- 1:05:43He's Nidagi. The guy with the yeah, Nidagi,
- 1:05:46that's how I was referring to him because I was like, this guy
- 1:05:49just wants to. Which is the villain that is
- 1:05:52burnt in Nightmare on Elm Street?
- 1:05:55Freddy Krueger. Freddy Krueger.
- 1:05:56OK, I was referencing as him as Freddy Krueger.
- 1:05:59Like especially in season. Two.
- 1:06:01Yeah, because he. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:02So Freddy Krueger slash the. Rap.
- 1:06:04I love how they tried to give him a back story of like, well
- 1:06:06he was. Bull bro bro bro bro.
- 1:06:07OK, we'll talk about it. OK, OK, OK.
- 1:06:09No adjust. Location.
- 1:06:12So I loved the trans character. I was on the fence about MJ for
- 1:06:20most of the show until season two.
- 1:06:22I think season 2 we'll talk about like what happens to him
- 1:06:25in his back story that they finally revealed because I was
- 1:06:27like, they went for it there and then the rapist.
- 1:06:31So we have to talk about the rapist now, though, because he
- 1:06:33almost rapes the white rabbit Usagi just before the beach
- 1:06:38becomes the arena. Exactly.
- 1:06:40Like they were holding her down and shit.
- 1:06:41Like I was like pressed. I was like, we need to freaking
- 1:06:45like send a laser down now, like for this guy, right?
- 1:06:49Because and he was doing all this tongue shit with the tongue
- 1:06:52ring. Out the Queen of Hearts was not
- 1:06:54an ally. Like she should have just
- 1:06:55lasered the shit out of him right there.
- 1:06:57Like it's always with the sexual violence, with these.
- 1:07:01Shows I know but like finally nothing happens thank God but
- 1:07:04like holy shit I was like we are not.
- 1:07:08It was pretty bad. It was bad.
- 1:07:10I was I was shaking. I.
- 1:07:11Was like, how far is this going to go?
- 1:07:12I was just like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:15Fast forward, because it was, I mean it was demented, but
- 1:07:21anyway. So the beach becomes an arena.
- 1:07:22We play A10 of Hearts game. I love this game.
- 1:07:26I love this game, the one where home girl is like stabbed.
- 1:07:29Or yeah, yeah, this is the witch.
- 1:07:30Hunt. Yeah, the witch hunt.
- 1:07:31Yeah, I love that. I love that game.
- 1:07:33So you liked it? I love that game.
- 1:07:35I. Don't know if I liked it.
- 1:07:36Because it was so. This is the one that actually
- 1:07:40got me into that mode of like just kind of being upset just
- 1:07:44because like, it's just straight up just like people just gunning
- 1:07:48down people. And I kind of like, I kind of
- 1:07:52felt like this way of like this is a little too real, at least
- 1:07:57for me. The it's just obviously it's a
- 1:07:59show and I and I get it, but like when there's just people
- 1:08:03like running down the halls and then you see them just.
- 1:08:05Like there was like a level of senseless violence when it comes
- 1:08:09to the mowing down. Of people.
- 1:08:13People gaming gamers in this show, that didn't sit right with
- 1:08:17me because there was they're not playing at that point.
- 1:08:20They're there's no level of skill involved in this.
- 1:08:22They're just running for their lives.
- 1:08:25They're just running for their lives.
- 1:08:26That's the one thing that I was just like, this doesn't feel
- 1:08:29like a game. This one's just we're going to
- 1:08:32kill everyone. That's that's kind of how it
- 1:08:34felt. I mean, the motive kind of tries
- 1:08:36to like make up for that, right? Because because Life Beater was
- 1:08:40the one that was like, I'm just going to kill everybody here
- 1:08:42because their adoration of the Mad Hatter was what drove him to
- 1:08:48madness. And to start these foul policies
- 1:08:53of like loyalty or you die, give up your card.
- 1:08:57On the nose take of a witch hunt, like let's just kill
- 1:09:00everybody like it's you know what it was, though, I think I
- 1:09:04can nail down what made it a bit like it was not only were people
- 1:09:08getting gunned down like point blank, and that was jarring by
- 1:09:11itself. What got me was you remember
- 1:09:13when like they show the victims running down the halls like
- 1:09:17through CCTV and it's like so similar to the thing like we see
- 1:09:21this on the news all the time. So it's like I'm watching this.
- 1:09:25I'm like, Oh my God, like this is all too it's way too much.
- 1:09:29But at the same time, did you guys, did you guys, did you
- 1:09:34solve this one right away, though?
- 1:09:35No, because I had this one like right off ramp.
- 1:09:38What you guess you guessed that it was a it was a suicide.
- 1:09:44Yes, this was very it was very, you know, spoiler alert, it's a
- 1:09:4870 year old episode, but like monsters are due on Maple street
- 1:09:52of twilight zone. Like right off ramp.
- 1:09:54I was like home girl stabbed herself like because it's a
- 1:09:58witch hunt. It it's a baseless angry mob
- 1:10:02killing everyone insight with little to no evidence.
- 1:10:04I'm like, she stabbed herself and that would like immediately.
- 1:10:08And that's why I love the way that the episode unfolded
- 1:10:10because it's also like, I was like, all right, there's like
- 1:10:131413 episodes left. There are way too many extras to
- 1:10:16pay. Like they're going to have to
- 1:10:18start like calling this. Case you thought the budget was
- 1:10:21too high. Yeah, I was like, immediately I
- 1:10:24was like, it was her. She did it to herself.
- 1:10:26Whatever. I didn't know how they were
- 1:10:27going to figure it out. But then, you know, and CSI she
- 1:10:33checks like the prints using some kind of paste that she
- 1:10:35forms out of like the glue whiteout and some glue.
- 1:10:39And you know, the fingerprints are I, I was living for this one
- 1:10:43because I knew it was her. I was just trying to figure out
- 1:10:46how they were going to figure it out.
- 1:10:48It was so obvious. I thought it was a goonie.
- 1:10:50I did. Not get that.
- 1:10:52And then like halfway through this witch hunt, I was like,
- 1:10:56it's too easy if it's a goonie. So then I didn't have it at all.
- 1:10:59But I never guess it was a suicide.
- 1:11:02Oh yeah, neither did I I was not there also.
- 1:11:06I was like there here. Like, you know what I mean?
- 1:11:09It's gonna she stabbed herself in the place where it would hurt
- 1:11:12the least, you know what I mean? It's not like with how brutal
- 1:11:15all the killings have been in the show, like, you know what I
- 1:11:19mean? It was just kind of sticking out
- 1:11:21of her shoulder. It was not a shoulder shot.
- 1:11:24It was. It was in her chest.
- 1:11:25It was. It was like right here.
- 1:11:26Like it was like here, like just, yeah, whatever.
- 1:11:30The point is, it was really engaging.
- 1:11:32I really, I really liked this. It was like horrifying and
- 1:11:35disgusting, but it was also really engaging.
- 1:11:37I really liked. It I didn't like that Aguni like
- 1:11:41killed hundreds of people basically.
- 1:11:44Or or triple digits at the very least.
- 1:11:47Yeah, they they kill he. Killed a ton of people and then
- 1:11:50they bring him back for season 2 and I was like what?
- 1:11:52So. Like why did?
- 1:11:54How the fuck did he live like #1?
- 1:11:58Right. That was my when they brought
- 1:12:00him back and I saw him and I was like.
- 1:12:02How was he he got shot like multiplied like Mitagi The
- 1:12:04rapist shot him multiple times with a with a gun.
- 1:12:08I was shocked when he came back in season 2 and then Mitagi was
- 1:12:14getting. Shot at while charging into a
- 1:12:15gun. Yeah, he was.
- 1:12:16Charging the gun. He was charging at the rapist.
- 1:12:20Like, I know he's an SDF or like some kind of Secret Service or
- 1:12:23whatever, but there's no excuse for that.
- 1:12:24Like he's not a horse. Like he's like running straight
- 1:12:28into this gun, like blasting. Like I couldn't figure out.
- 1:12:31I couldn't. Figure it out.
- 1:12:32I was looking for signs that he was struggling with the injuries
- 1:12:36in season 2, no? We we'll get to it later
- 1:12:39obviously, but I thought he got shot in the head in season 2 and
- 1:12:43this dude was still like rolling around alive.
- 1:12:45Oh no, yeah, he got like grazed. Yeah, he was like grazing.
- 1:12:49But damn, like I didn't understand a goonie at all.
- 1:12:54That guy living. I didn't understand Niragi the
- 1:12:57rapist living at all. When he showed up in season 2, I
- 1:13:00had to pause the shows. I was laughing so hard.
- 1:13:03It's like. I was like get the fuck out of
- 1:13:05here. Like this guy is still on two
- 1:13:07feet. Like you're joking.
- 1:13:08Right, exactly. And like the sword bitch, like
- 1:13:11definitely like he went, he went down like if anything, what was
- 1:13:14that guy? Oh, oh, Oh well, oh, we have to
- 1:13:17talk about that scene. We'll get, we'll get.
- 1:13:18We have to talk about that scene before.
- 1:13:19We move on to episode eight, season one, yes, so but like he
- 1:13:23kind of Long story short, I think that making a Goonie and
- 1:13:28Nuragi survive to season 2 was like a swerve.
- 1:13:32Like I thought this is the most daydrop thing about this.
- 1:13:36Yeah. And I couldn't believe they did
- 1:13:39it for both of the characters. Maybe one, but both like I don't
- 1:13:43know, I, I, I didn't like that. I didn't like that.
- 1:13:47I'm like, we're like y'all should have.
- 1:13:49Been honestly. This makes no sense.
- 1:13:51They zagged on that like I was like, And then so the fight that
- 1:13:56you're talking about between the tattooed bald samurai stood.
- 1:14:01Yeah. And Kuena Hikari, well, do we
- 1:14:05have a nickname for her? At all the dreads, just hikati.
- 1:14:08OK, Hikati was nuts. That was amazing.
- 1:14:11I love that fight. That was good.
- 1:14:14That was good fight. That was a really good fight.
- 1:14:17Like I I do love it's so on the nose, but this was one of the
- 1:14:21few because this is one of the show started to put in those
- 1:14:24heavy like flashbacks and cutaways.
- 1:14:27But this was one of the ones I think that paid off the most out
- 1:14:31of the whole series because it was all about perspective.
- 1:14:35Like the sword dude is like this guy who obviously struggles with
- 1:14:38mental illness, but beyond that he just doesn't leave the house.
- 1:14:41I forget what they call it over there.
- 1:14:43Like Hikiko Kimori Hiko. Well, basically a person who
- 1:14:46just like, I might be butchering that, but basically they have a
- 1:14:50name for people who are essentially hermits.
- 1:14:52It's just like a Japanese version of a hermit.
- 1:14:54So he's a hermit and he hates himself and he hates everything.
- 1:14:59So that's why he is the way he is.
- 1:15:00But I love that they show Hikaru, you know, her dad
- 1:15:04teaching her before she transitioned, like how to fight
- 1:15:07and how to be all this stuff and her mother showing her how to
- 1:15:11love and everything. And she just tells him, you
- 1:15:13know, that's your problem. You run away from your past.
- 1:15:16I carry mine with me. I was.
- 1:15:17Like holy shit. My perspective, because the
- 1:15:20other guy is like running away and that's like he's like, I got
- 1:15:22these tattoos. Don't look into my eyes.
- 1:15:24I have swords. And no, she's like no.
- 1:15:27And even she said she's like, this is for you dad.
- 1:15:29Like she doesn't. She didn't care about the
- 1:15:31fallout. She didn't care that she was
- 1:15:32rejected, she took the best things that the best things that
- 1:15:36made her who she is because she knows that all came together.
- 1:15:39Exactly. And then took that shit and ran
- 1:15:42with it through the whole series.
- 1:15:44Love that stuff. It was so loved it one was
- 1:15:47trying to erase and forget his past and thriving in this game
- 1:15:50world because of that. And the other one reconciled
- 1:15:54with her past and faced it head on to survive in the game world.
- 1:15:59And I loved this fight. I loved the backstories and that
- 1:16:04was that was a really high point in the episode amongst all of
- 1:16:09like the killing, the senseless killing in the episode.
- 1:16:15It showed that there was still light in the world.
- 1:16:17I really like that. Like, no, we're, we're, we're
- 1:16:20getting out of this one alive type of deal.
- 1:16:22Right. Episode 8, the witch is
- 1:16:24revealed. It is Momoko.
- 1:16:26Like I can't remember the character's name, but she
- 1:16:28basically stabs herself like you said.
- 1:16:30And the dealers are also revealed.
- 1:16:33So now we have this other level to the games where there are
- 1:16:38people that are coerced into facilitating the games and they
- 1:16:43go into the subway station and follow in the footsteps of these
- 1:16:46girls who took videos of their travels around the games and
- 1:16:51basically documented their time in the Borderlands when they get
- 1:16:56down there. This What is this like station
- 1:16:59this? It's like a, it's kind of like a
- 1:17:02maintenance room inside of a station in the train station.
- 1:17:05So it's like a, it's like a broadcast.
- 1:17:08Station, this broadcast station, everyone's been killed.
- 1:17:12And Mita, the woman dressed in black who was on the executive
- 1:17:16team at the beach, pops up on the screen and she's like a
- 1:17:21fucking joke. Like she is the most cartoonish
- 1:17:25character. I couldn't.
- 1:17:26I couldn't with. This, when she comes up, pops up
- 1:17:28on the screen. I couldn't I that this is what
- 1:17:31really like you remember Fifth Harmony when they showed up
- 1:17:35without Kabila Cabela and she just like flies back.
- 1:17:37That did me to that did that to me to the show.
- 1:17:40Like I was sitting on my couch and I'm like, I literally said
- 1:17:44out loud, I was on a friend on the phone with a friend of mine.
- 1:17:47I'm like, you know what, if you guys aren't going to take this
- 1:17:48shit soon. I just, I turned it off.
- 1:17:50I was like, I'm going to, I'll be back.
- 1:17:53Like this was at 2:00 in the morning.
- 1:17:54I was like, I'll be back in like 6 hours.
- 1:17:56I'm not even going to deal with this right now.
- 1:17:58I finished the episode in the morning, 'cause she's like, I
- 1:18:01don't know, Katashi got gay muthis and just like, really,
- 1:18:05really anime. And I'm like, Oh no, no, no, you
- 1:18:08look like those weeaboos who pretend to be Japanese.
- 1:18:11Like stop. Like it was so cartoon.
- 1:18:13It was really cringy. And basically, she announces
- 1:18:17that new games will begin, and you see airships carrying giant
- 1:18:22flags of face cards flying all across the city of Tokyo.
- 1:18:26And you're just like, oh, fuck. And that's the end of season
- 1:18:29one, right? Like we have to see our favorite
- 1:18:32characters get through the face cards alive.
- 1:18:36That took me out. When they're down there, it's
- 1:18:38like she's like, I thought it would be an alien And it's like,
- 1:18:41I'd rather it be an alien than this chick like this.
- 1:18:43Like animals like so angry. Like I would like, she's like so
- 1:18:47pissed. She's like, I wish it was an
- 1:18:49alien instead of whatever the hell this is supposed to be.
- 1:18:53Like she's like, this is embarrassing.
- 1:18:56Like I don't know about. You, but it gets more
- 1:18:57embarrassing, like who we meet in the second season.
- 1:19:04So. I need to know your I need.
- 1:19:07I've been dying to hear your perspective on this.
- 1:19:09Dude are. You talking about the King of
- 1:19:11Spades? Or someone else, the naked dude.
- 1:19:15Oh, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold.
- 1:19:17On. Hold on, we'll get.
- 1:19:19To that so so season 2 we're now going to talk about season 2
- 1:19:23episode one starts off with the king of Spades is in the area.
- 1:19:29There is another massacre in the streets.
- 1:19:32There is no games. There are no rules announced.
- 1:19:35There's no timer on anything. There is just a masked man with
- 1:19:40unlimited ammo gunning down people in the streets.
- 1:19:43You have to terrifying somehow kill this Terminator that that's
- 1:19:49the king of spades. And I was like, Oh no, I don't.
- 1:19:54If every game is going to be like this, I am not going to
- 1:19:56like Season 2. No, I because again, that's not
- 1:20:00a game. It's not a game like, yeah, that
- 1:20:02was my thing. Too, That's just that's just
- 1:20:04straight up massacre. Like it's, it threw me for a
- 1:20:07loop that first episode of season 2 because I'm just like,
- 1:20:11Oh my God. And the way like the, the
- 1:20:14gunfire like was just insane. Like the way the they portrayed
- 1:20:19the gunfire was crazy. It was just really pervasive,
- 1:20:22like non-stop, just like. Right, exactly.
- 1:20:26It was non-stop. One thing I will give you talked
- 1:20:30earlier about a A1 take sequence.
- 1:20:34We saw another one in this episode.
- 1:20:35It was a car chase. Yes.
- 1:20:37Which I was like, oh, there's, there's a woman.
- 1:20:40What? That was not a bad car chase,
- 1:20:41you're right. It was not.
- 1:20:43It was not a bad car chase. Those cars, were they?
- 1:20:45Were. Yes, I love the little Toyota.
- 1:20:49Century, I think it is. That's the one that all the cabs
- 1:20:52in Japan are like. They use that.
- 1:20:54They're modeled after it. Yeah, with the little curtains
- 1:20:57and stuff. That was sick.
- 1:20:58Oh my God, When he like pulls up alongside them and they look and
- 1:21:02he just like shoots into their car.
- 1:21:05Shit was terrifying. That was such a great.
- 1:21:07The car scene was that was a bright spot in the otherwise not
- 1:21:12likeable or enjoyable King of Spades intro.
- 1:21:17Right, exactly. It it was very, it was extreme.
- 1:21:23It was a bit of an extreme intro to the season, but at the end of
- 1:21:28the day, that was just one episode.
- 1:21:29There were still so much more. To Well we also meet the king of
- 1:21:34clubs in this episode 5 on one team is the game.
- 1:21:41Niragi the The Tongue Ring Rapist is back from fucking
- 1:21:45season one still. Live back again.
- 1:21:47The king of clubs is a nudist, and I guess we have to talk
- 1:21:51about this guy actually, before we do.
- 1:21:55Before we do, there is a convenience store scene between
- 1:21:59Adisa and the white rabbit Usagi, where there's scavenging
- 1:22:03for food. And Adisa basically says he
- 1:22:06wants to go back. He wants to go back to the real
- 1:22:08world and Usagi is traumatized by losing her father and the
- 1:22:14cruelty of the media toward her dad that she says she hates the
- 1:22:20real world and if given the chance she would not go back.
- 1:22:24Adisa says. Like even though he hated a lot
- 1:22:27of his life, he still cherishes his memories with his friends
- 1:22:32and he wants to do better, live a different life, and he'll
- 1:22:36protect her in the game no matter what.
- 1:22:39What they can start over in the real world.
- 1:22:42They flashback to something that his older brother said in season
- 1:22:45one episode one, which was if only the real world can be
- 1:22:49reset. And it did.
- 1:22:51Yeah, and so I like this. So now you have this new drama
- 1:22:55in episodes in Season 2 which is Arisa and Usagi are both trying
- 1:23:00to survive the games but to different ends.
- 1:23:03Yeah. You know they're not on the
- 1:23:05same. One's just trying to stay alive.
- 1:23:06The other one actually wants to go back.
- 1:23:08Exactly. To the other one exactly.
- 1:23:11So now we get to the King of clubs.
- 1:23:13What do you think about that, this clown?
- 1:23:15Yo, this so I really like OK, so I really like the the aspect of
- 1:23:22him being almost like Ariso's mental foe.
- 1:23:29Like, oh, I think we're going to say mentor.
- 1:23:31And I was like, yeah, yeah. I was following.
- 1:23:33There's a little bit to that too.
- 1:23:35Like there is an aspect of like this is a a well worthy
- 1:23:40challenging adversary. It's a charismatic leader.
- 1:23:43Yes, and he's looking for an opponent who it can meet him at
- 1:23:49his level. And he sees it in Aristotle like
- 1:23:52he he he finds someone. Oh, wait a minute.
- 1:23:56I think this this kid has potential.
- 1:23:59I want to push him to that. I want to I want to see how far
- 1:24:02he's willing to go, you know, because I can see the potential
- 1:24:05in this kid. Is he willing to make, you know,
- 1:24:09the sacrifice? Is he willing to, you know,
- 1:24:12really meet me at my level here? Is he challenging Worthy
- 1:24:17Opponent? And yeah, I I really dug that
- 1:24:20part of it. Why he was butt ass naked, who
- 1:24:23knows who. Knows I know when you I.
- 1:24:26When you were in the Borderlands.
- 1:24:28The shots of him walking around, I was like, how many things can
- 1:24:33you use to obscure his genitals? Like I was amazed.
- 1:24:39I was like, how do they get it? Go the camera angles where like
- 1:24:43they're showing him from the front and like they get as low
- 1:24:46as they can low. As possible.
- 1:24:48And I'm like, bro, like 1 centimeter and you're seeing
- 1:24:53full on, you know, I know. I'm just like full on peen.
- 1:24:56Yes, I was like, wow, this is I was impressed.
- 1:24:59I was. Impressed.
- 1:24:59Same character. Him crouching down like stop his
- 1:25:03friend that died. I'm like get off, get.
- 1:25:05Off, get off. Oh my God, I really.
- 1:25:09But I loved him and I loved it added like some, like, I mean, I
- 1:25:13was like, have you guys ever seen The Leftovers?
- 1:25:16I don't think so. I've never watched the show but
- 1:25:18I I've heard of it. It's, it's really dismal.
- 1:25:21It's like pitch black. But like up until this point I
- 1:25:23was like, OK, now I need levity. I need something 'cause like,
- 1:25:27and this brought like so much levity.
- 1:25:29Like it was funny. Like it was a good like sight
- 1:25:31gag. But like, also like he's
- 1:25:34charismatic. Like he said in a world that has
- 1:25:35no charisma, like has no humor, has no nothing.
- 1:25:38So I think it was a really interesting departure.
- 1:25:41And I also love how tight knit this king was with his band.
- 1:25:47They all kind of accepted their fate and they kind of accepted
- 1:25:50the role really well of like, we're just facilitators for you
- 1:25:53to win or lose this game. We already know what's going to
- 1:25:56happen to us no matter what. I thought that was really
- 1:25:58refreshing. You know, it wasn't.
- 1:26:00We took a break from the whole like, how could you like you?
- 1:26:04Even the one guy that they kind of send to die, he's like, wow,
- 1:26:06so I'm the one you chose. All right, well, I forgot what
- 1:26:10he says. He says like make it worth our
- 1:26:12while. And then he dies.
- 1:26:13And they actually do feel bad. They feel remorse, but they've
- 1:26:16all kind of accepted, like, you know, that's going to be their
- 1:26:19role in this world. So I found it really refreshing
- 1:26:23from the rest of what we had had up until.
- 1:26:26That .2 sides of the same crew coin.
- 1:26:30I I liked it. They have like a lot of yapping
- 1:26:34though in this episode too. When they this is when they
- 1:26:37actually like. This is the meat of the game and
- 1:26:40I think at the very start of the game, Adi says still like asking
- 1:26:43the same question, like if we win all of the games, will we
- 1:26:46get to go back to the real world?
- 1:26:47Does he? He asks every.
- 1:26:48Game nobody knows. Like stop asking, we're all in
- 1:26:51this world. So.
- 1:26:53Like just stop. The King of clubs is like how
- 1:26:55many hearts, heart to hearts did you have.
- 1:26:58Our flaws, our pride, those are exposed here in this world.
- 1:27:02We when we look death in the eye, we face true human nature
- 1:27:05and reality. This world is more real than any
- 1:27:08you left behind. And I was like oh what the fuck
- 1:27:12now? Like I was like.
- 1:27:15It's like, oh, is it? Yeah, it was AI mean.
- 1:27:20We knew this already, but obviously the games are
- 1:27:24definitely a social experiment, or at least bringing about
- 1:27:28social commentary, and this was just drawing attention to that.
- 1:27:33So I felt like some of the dialogue was really good and
- 1:27:36some of it was really hammy. It's it's just anime tropes.
- 1:27:39I know I keep saying it, but all the way down, like the whole
- 1:27:42looking off, not even looking at the person you're talking to
- 1:27:45saying something sort of deep, but not really.
- 1:27:49So like it was OK, but like at this point I was like, yo, like
- 1:27:53again, and I think I've said this on a previous podcast
- 1:27:55because I've hit this point before.
- 1:27:56I'm like, I really desperately want to either watch this on
- 1:27:59double speed or Fast forward, but like I can't risk missing
- 1:28:04something. And like, you know, just, but I
- 1:28:06was just like, bro, like please just pack it up.
- 1:28:09Like let's go if you're going to die, just like get like get
- 1:28:12lazier right in your shit and let's just move.
- 1:28:15Like please like. But but all that to say, like
- 1:28:19for as drawn out and exhausting as some chunks of it were, it it
- 1:28:23all did serve a purpose. And the overarching thing of
- 1:28:26like, they're all unified and like you said, two sides of the
- 1:28:29same team coin. I like that like so.
- 1:28:31It did me off and I thought the game was very interesting where
- 1:28:34it's not like, oh, if we combat and I win, the other person dies
- 1:28:39type of thing. No, like you still can help your
- 1:28:43team, you know, you could still find ways to be able to get to
- 1:28:47the goal, which is to have more points at the end.
- 1:28:50Now are we going to talk about how this game ends?
- 1:28:54Oh, with Tata chopping his own hand off.
- 1:28:58Yeah, let's talk about that that.
- 1:29:00Was rough. Well, first of all, we get his
- 1:29:02flashback sequence. I mean, he maims a fellow
- 1:29:06mechanic by putting this jet because he's a car mechanic and
- 1:29:11he puts this Jack under the car wrong after being repeatedly
- 1:29:16told to get his shit together. And he, I mean, it's negligence
- 1:29:21is through his own negligence. He, I mean, this guy that he was
- 1:29:28working with loses a hand and he feels incredible guilt over
- 1:29:32that. I mean, I'm not sure anybody
- 1:29:34wouldn't even if they put the Jack correctly and some shit
- 1:29:37goes wrong, I mean that would wreck you for life.
- 1:29:41And so he. He was called out for that
- 1:29:43carelessness even before. Absolutely.
- 1:29:44Because he's telling the mechanic who ends up maiming,
- 1:29:47like, and then taking away like, that's the way he makes a
- 1:29:50living. That's, you know, so like, he
- 1:29:53was like, yeah, you know, this is a fun little thing to do, but
- 1:29:55I'm gonna learn English and I'm gonna do this and I'm gonna do
- 1:29:57that. And he's like, oh, well, this is
- 1:30:00what I do for a living. Like bro, like.
- 1:30:02It's an honest fuck. You like, this is a really good
- 1:30:04honest job. And then his carelessness ends
- 1:30:06up losing him in arms. So, so I guess it's that
- 1:30:09atonement thing, right? Like, you know, well, hey, I
- 1:30:14mean, that's a lesson to learn, right?
- 1:30:17Yeah, I'm not sure what the fuck was going through Adis's mind
- 1:30:21when he paired up Nidagi the Rapist with White Rabbit Usagi
- 1:30:26during the game. Like I was like I was a.
- 1:30:29Dumb bro, you're an idiot. Your your team building skills
- 1:30:32are not great because Oh my God. Yeah, when they think they're
- 1:30:37about to lose, Nidagi goes ape shit and there's another rape
- 1:30:41attempt on Usagi. I didn't like that.
- 1:30:44I didn't. I'm like, this seems like some
- 1:30:46kind of weird kind of fanservice and I'm not really here for it.
- 1:30:49Like I like. We get the point.
- 1:30:51What do you talk about? Fanservice.
- 1:30:52Yeah. It I don't know, this is a trope
- 1:30:55too, right? So it's like, I'm not gonna, I'm
- 1:30:59not gonna get into it. The.
- 1:31:00Point is like she's a damsel and like he has to save her.
- 1:31:03Adisa has to save her, no? No, no, the rapist like actively
- 1:31:07pursuing this chick a second time.
- 1:31:09Like we really? This is such an easy thing to
- 1:31:12sidestep. Why are we getting another scene
- 1:31:14like this in the show? I don't understand.
- 1:31:16It's a good point. It's a very good point.
- 1:31:19Like, yeah. I I don't get why this character
- 1:31:22survives. Yeah, he sure just died.
- 1:31:24And then when I saw his flashbacks, I'm like, you know
- 1:31:26what they should have done you in on the other side.
- 1:31:28Like, I don't know why. Like, I don't know why you're
- 1:31:29here. This is a mess like.
- 1:31:31But yeah, so the way the game ends I think is genius.
- 1:31:35I love the fact that they decide to sacrifice Tyler's hand to
- 1:31:41give it to WE. Can call him Glenn from The
- 1:31:43Walking. Dead from The Walking.
- 1:31:44Dead. He he reminded me of Glenn from
- 1:31:47The Walking Dead. So dirty.
- 1:31:48Yeah, he did like especially with the car, like he's the one
- 1:31:51that goes to like lift the car and he comes in this obnoxious
- 1:31:56cherry red car. And I was like, it's just like
- 1:31:59Glenn in season one and then the hat like it is very season one.
- 1:32:06But the the philosophical like, you know, debate between the
- 1:32:11king of clubs and sorry. Yes, the last yap fest.
- 1:32:16Yeah, the last yap fest, Yeah. But like that, you know, going
- 1:32:20back and forth between them. But then the ultimate like
- 1:32:24gamesmanship of like, I got the better of you because I did.
- 1:32:29We did what it needed to be done to win this game.
- 1:32:33We made a sacrifice and we're going to win this game.
- 1:32:36So I I really enjoyed that they were able to go to that.
- 1:32:40Obviously, rest in peace to Glenn from The Walking Dead, you
- 1:32:45know, because that sacrifice drew out a lot of blood.
- 1:32:49So he was going to make it. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:32:53But I thought was interesting was Idesa says that he doesn't
- 1:32:56want the king of clubs to die. He's like, I don't want you to
- 1:32:59die. And I was like, he's finally
- 1:33:01challenged. Yeah.
- 1:33:05Like that was hard for me to grasp and I don't know if that
- 1:33:07was hard for any of you guys to grasp.
- 1:33:09Either I think I understand. That they didn't blame the game
- 1:33:14Masters of the face cards, even though they were also they were
- 1:33:20players and now they became elevated and were developing
- 1:33:24this game around their strengths or their interests.
- 1:33:28Maybe he was just so refreshed to meet somebody of like an
- 1:33:30equal intellectual capacity and with all his like flowery
- 1:33:34charisma, like and depth, like, you know, like it was nice.
- 1:33:38It's like, oh, I can have a real conversation while everybody
- 1:33:40around me is getting gunned down, mowed down.
- 1:33:42Like there's no it there. There's nothing in this universe
- 1:33:46except for like bleak strategy as a means to an end, violence,
- 1:33:51desolation, sadness. So to have a conversation with
- 1:33:54somebody that's, you know, anything that's not that, and on
- 1:33:58top of that, have someone that's at least somewhat like an
- 1:34:00intellectual equal. I think that really like
- 1:34:02appealed to Adisu. So it's like, no, I just met you
- 1:34:05and now like, you know, you're going to die too, like.
- 1:34:07This like this is someone who he actually could see that there
- 1:34:13was there was good in in him like even.
- 1:34:17There he said malicious. He was not malicious and he was.
- 1:34:20He just kind of acquiesced to the.
- 1:34:21World and he was also very to the point of like, really, like
- 1:34:26I said, challenging addiso and and also enlightening him on
- 1:34:32there are things you can do like are you willing to do?
- 1:34:35Think about it like he was he was really like you said
- 1:34:39Jessica, like almost like a mentor figure because again, he
- 1:34:43wasn't there to like we're here to kill you.
- 1:34:47You know, it wasn't that type of attitude.
- 1:34:48It was an attitude of like, hey, you've stepped into my game
- 1:34:52right now and let's see what you got.
- 1:34:55Let's see if you can actually save your team.
- 1:34:59If not, we're going to win and we're going to still be here.
- 1:35:02This is this is our life. This is what we are now called
- 1:35:05to do going forward. But can you do something about
- 1:35:09it? You know, like it wasn't that
- 1:35:11attitude of like you're dead, you know, and because we see
- 1:35:15that in other it was like good. Sportsmanship.
- 1:35:18Exactly. It almost felt like good
- 1:35:20sportsmanship. So overall, I mean.
- 1:35:23He says like little Nuggets to him, you're playing your own
- 1:35:26game, you're the master of your own fate, you'll never be like
- 1:35:29me and you shouldn't want that. And then he says what I felt was
- 1:35:34in their last yap session after. He knows that he's going to die.
- 1:35:39He knows he's lost the game. This part felt a lot like
- 1:35:43Dumbledore and Harry Potter talking in the dreamscape King's
- 1:35:48Cross station in like the final Harry Potter movie.
- 1:35:52Because it was almost like, what makes you think this isn't real?
- 1:35:56Like, you know, like, what makes you think this isn't just
- 1:36:00because it's might not be happening.
- 1:36:03It is strange. Like, doesn't mean it.
- 1:36:06It's not meaningful or anything like that.
- 1:36:07And the quotes I have are actually, no, that was Adios
- 1:36:10saying that he's like, if we hadn't met playing this game,
- 1:36:12who's to say? And the king of clubs says it's
- 1:36:16the only reason we became this close was because we met playing
- 1:36:19this game. So it's kind of like this
- 1:36:20paradoxical thing, he responds. But if we had met somewhere else
- 1:36:25and maybe we could have actually been friends again, like this,
- 1:36:28like mentorship, like, I admire you.
- 1:36:30I really like your vibe and the king of clubs says we've been
- 1:36:34friends this whole time, Addy said.
- 1:36:37I hope you figure it out how to live by your own rules.
- 1:36:40Your life is yours. Don't follow someone else's
- 1:36:42path. It was an honor playing with
- 1:36:44you. Sick.
- 1:36:46Sick stuff. Loved it.
- 1:36:47So I was like. My head was.
- 1:36:49Reeling on this character, the goofy, the character that
- 1:36:53probably at least viscerally should have been the goofiest,
- 1:36:56turned out to be one of my favorites.
- 1:36:58I was like wow, this is such a great.
- 1:37:00Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:37:03All right, so episodes 3 through 4, it's Chisia, MJ playing in
- 1:37:07the prison. He's got to win a Jack of Hearts
- 1:37:10game and this one was interesting.
- 1:37:14Is this the next collar one? Yes.
- 1:37:17What the like? Tell your suit it was.
- 1:37:20They did a really good job of doing the the red herring on it,
- 1:37:24where you think it is the girl who attracts everyone to her
- 1:37:28group. Yeah, well, I, I.
- 1:37:31Mean that was easy to not believe.
- 1:37:33Right, because it it happened too early in that game for you
- 1:37:37to be like, Yep, that's her. And like Michael Jackson, he's
- 1:37:41kind of like, you know, pointing things out and noticing things.
- 1:37:45I love how observant his character is.
- 1:37:49Like he he does not jump into anything.
- 1:37:52He is watchful. Super calm, super calm.
- 1:37:56Because he needs to be and like more on his back story in a
- 1:37:59little bit, but like he needs to be calm.
- 1:38:02If not you will suffer the fate of death.
- 1:38:06So he understands like he needs to look at these characters.
- 1:38:10He needs to see, OK, what is this person's angle?
- 1:38:14How are they acting? You know?
- 1:38:17And so he's super observant and he kind of stays to himself
- 1:38:20somewhat for the most part. He does obviously have a partner
- 1:38:24that's helping him, you know, telling what his what the suit
- 1:38:28is on his collar. But for the most part, I really
- 1:38:31enjoy how observant of a character he is.
- 1:38:34Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what makes him
- 1:38:36interesting to watch is that you kind of think he has it figured
- 1:38:38out, but he's got such a good poker face and he's so calm
- 1:38:43that. Yeah, he makes that face even
- 1:38:45when he's shot in. His hands are still in his
- 1:38:49pocket, laying on the ground. He's like, wow, you missed a
- 1:38:51vital organ. I'm.
- 1:38:52Like OK, too cool. Nothing.
- 1:38:55Nothing will shock you. He was very cool in this.
- 1:38:58Game. Yeah, he was really cool and I
- 1:39:00loved it was just such an interesting game to figure out
- 1:39:03who was the Jack of hearts. And I thought it was the guy
- 1:39:08that was the murderer who showed up at the beginning of the
- 1:39:11episode. I thought it was that guy wasn't
- 1:39:14that guy, it was his partner. So like, great bait and switch.
- 1:39:19Arisa and Usagi find this encampment where everyone's dead
- 1:39:22and they watch an 8mm film. I thought this was going to lead
- 1:39:26to something and it didn't really lead to anything.
- 1:39:29Such a waste honestly. I thought this was a waste.
- 1:39:32It was a waste because you think, oh, this is going to lead
- 1:39:35to like a clue to like, what is the end game of all this and
- 1:39:40nothing? You get like, this girl is like,
- 1:39:43oh, she saw something in the sky that's a clue to like, there's
- 1:39:47something that she knows about the world and like she gets shot
- 1:39:50in the head. In the in the footage gets cut
- 1:39:52off by. The king of space, why was she
- 1:39:53dressed like it was? Was that the I was so like I was
- 1:39:55so checked out during that because I was like, this isn't
- 1:39:58going anywhere. Was was that in the 70s or did
- 1:40:01they? Just no, no, no, that was.
- 1:40:02Theirs. Because.
- 1:40:03It just. Because the home girl's dressed
- 1:40:05like she's in the. I know what you're talking.
- 1:40:08About like, she looked like a hippie and they're in a hippie
- 1:40:10van and I think that mix of being a Super 8 camera, I was
- 1:40:13like, are we time travelling now?
- 1:40:15Because this show doesn't need time travelling.
- 1:40:17Like, well, they, you know, they had talked various points, like
- 1:40:21time works differently here, like things are.
- 1:40:22Decomposing at. Different rates throughout the
- 1:40:24city, so they mentioned different things like that.
- 1:40:26But I thought this scene was just such, such a nothing burger
- 1:40:30of a thing. And then you find out Aguni is
- 1:40:32still alive in this part, Yeah. Again, makes no sense.
- 1:40:36I was shaking my head throughout this whole thing.
- 1:40:38You have the amputee girl with the bow and arrow.
- 1:40:41I called her Michonne in my notes.
- 1:40:43Dallas. I was calling her Katniss like.
- 1:40:46Katniss. All right, look, Katniss.
- 1:40:48She had a crazy back story too. She did.
- 1:40:52You find out in episodes 5 through 6 You you get her back
- 1:40:55story and the way that she survived her first game.
- 1:40:59And how she lost her leg, the bottom.
- 1:41:01Part, yeah, yeah. And then you kind of get the
- 1:41:04sense of that wasn't everyone is a shit person.
- 1:41:07Yes so then this led me to a theory and I was watching this
- 1:41:12with my girlfriend. Her aspect or her thing is she
- 1:41:16started noticing that when especially in season 2, like
- 1:41:19when the game players or the game makers of like that game,
- 1:41:24so like the king of clubs and stuff, when when they lost, they
- 1:41:29didn't lose in the sense of like I'm so angry I lost.
- 1:41:33I can't believe I'm about to die.
- 1:41:35There was like this resignation and this acceptance of like
- 1:41:39whatever happened in their past. They're like making up for stuff
- 1:41:43that happened in the past because maybe they were shitty
- 1:41:46at some point or they had to make a decision that was morally
- 1:41:51ambiguous. And now they're reconciling that
- 1:41:55in their lives. And it kind of like the theory
- 1:42:00kind of holds true depending on, you know, the people that you're
- 1:42:04talking about. For the most part it does.
- 1:42:06And I I think there's, there's something to it.
- 1:42:09But at the again, the show doesn't really give us that or
- 1:42:14tell us that that's it. We'll talk about the end later
- 1:42:19about that. Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:42:21So no mention of how Aguni survived, he says, not by
- 1:42:24choice. No sign of multiple gunshot
- 1:42:26wounds that he should have or any signs that he was in an
- 1:42:29inferno, which he definitely was.
- 1:42:32That was yap. Warrant, yeah, I was like, I was
- 1:42:34like share with the. Class, it's like, how did you
- 1:42:36survive? No, it's like we just heard six
- 1:42:39Hallmark cards worth of platitudes.
- 1:42:41Can you like chime in and no. Oh, OK.
- 1:42:44Strangely silent, he asked Arista like what's driving him?
- 1:42:48What is he living for? Does he really want to go back
- 1:42:50to our world? And Arista says I don't need a
- 1:42:53reason to live. My purpose doesn't make a
- 1:42:55difference. Even if it's gone, I need to
- 1:42:57keep living. It's kind of like, you know what
- 1:43:00it is what it is. I don't need this grand reason
- 1:43:03to live. I just know that I should live.
- 1:43:06I guess that's as good a reason as I.
- 1:43:08Yeah, yeah, sure, sure, sure. You get another face off with
- 1:43:12the King of Spades, who is everywhere and nowhere at the
- 1:43:15same time. There's a Kevlar vest, night
- 1:43:18vision goggles. I think when they set off the
- 1:43:21flare, I was like, you lost me because he has night vision
- 1:43:23goggles on That should definitely blind him.
- 1:43:26They lost me a little bit there, but I was like, OK, the
- 1:43:28Terminator still lives. I.
- 1:43:30Think these are the weakest these?
- 1:43:31Are yeah. When Adisa and Usagi separate
- 1:43:35I'm like this is weak. Yeah, it's.
- 1:43:38Instantly weaker. They needed to just keep them
- 1:43:41together though. Honestly they should have just
- 1:43:43kept them together for almost every challenge.
- 1:43:46I don't know why they split them up.
- 1:43:47Yeah, so then we get the Queen of Spades chest like game of
- 1:43:51laser tag, which is when Adisa finally reunites with Usagi and
- 1:43:55they now have a son because Usagi picked up this kid who's
- 1:44:00been orphaned in the game. No one cares to save the kid.
- 1:44:04They just want to save their own skin.
- 1:44:05So there's like another yap fest from Usagi at this point to try
- 1:44:08and get these people to understand they should try and
- 1:44:11leave the game. And this is when you figure out,
- 1:44:13oh, Usagi's changed her mind. She wants to leave.
- 1:44:16She. Wants to live now this this game
- 1:44:21kind of like I got to be honest, these three episodes are just
- 1:44:24weak all the way through, but I do love who was the suit in this
- 1:44:29one. Oh, this is the queen of spades.
- 1:44:32Queen of Sweets. I do love the way that she
- 1:44:35backflipped off that building and lasered the shit out of
- 1:44:38herself. She's like until we meet again
- 1:44:40and just like ramp. That shit took me out.
- 1:44:44Everything up until that point, I was like, OK, I see where this
- 1:44:47is going, but that that's good television talk about she's
- 1:44:53that's a girl who knew that the laser Mike is going to take her
- 1:44:55out before she hit the ground. I thought that was so sick.
- 1:45:00That's like my only take away from all those.
- 1:45:01Honest, I have Usaki's speech here, but I don't feel like
- 1:45:04saying it right now. They kiss in the Hot Springs
- 1:45:07Stadium, which is where the amputee Katniss had her first
- 1:45:13games, right? So they happened upon it.
- 1:45:15They figure it's a hot spring and they like take a much needed
- 1:45:20bath. But then there's elephants there
- 1:45:21and I was like, man, this show has changed.
- 1:45:23I was like scratch ahead. Where'd they come from like.
- 1:45:29But. A It was good.
- 1:45:30Then they have that moment. It's like, oh, are we gonna
- 1:45:32shower? Are we gonna bathe together?
- 1:45:34Yeah. And I was like, I think we're
- 1:45:35past this. Yeah, dude.
- 1:45:37It's like we're past way past this.
- 1:45:39Like just you can get in, you can get in like you've seen
- 1:45:42your. Friends honestly like.
- 1:45:43There's nothing once. The king of clubs was completely
- 1:45:46nude and running around. I'm like, we, we could take a
- 1:45:51bath. This is all this is all medical
- 1:45:53nudity. Like there is no arousal in this
- 1:45:55dismal, horrible world. This is like disaster nudity.
- 1:45:59Like when there's a hurricane and somebody runs out of the
- 1:46:01house with nothing but a hat and socks.
- 1:46:03Like, it's fine. Yeah.
- 1:46:06It's just baffling. It's unattractive.
- 1:46:08Like, you guys can, you can get in the hot spring and like,
- 1:46:11you'll be fine. Obviously that's.
- 1:46:13A dead body breaks up the intimacy and then we are going
- 1:46:16to skip ahead to the King of Diamond game with MJ playing in
- 1:46:22the Supreme Court, which I was like this one was fascinating
- 1:46:29and disgusting at the same time. It was a number guessing game
- 1:46:35and you put in your number. They took the average of the
- 1:46:39numbers multiplied about by 0.8 and then whoever was the closest
- 1:46:43to that number one the round. Everyone else lost a point.
- 1:46:47Whoever got to -10 got sulfuric acid poured all over them and
- 1:46:52that's how they perish. It was.
- 1:46:55I thought for sure they were not going to show the sulfuric acid
- 1:47:00falling on these people. They definitely showed it on the
- 1:47:02men. I was wrong.
- 1:47:06I. Hated it.
- 1:47:06It was. It was bad.
- 1:47:08God, great game, terrifying it. Was terrifying.
- 1:47:12Like bro, just give me the laser.
- 1:47:13Like I know if it's all the same, you know?
- 1:47:17I know, and this is where we get MJ's back story.
- 1:47:21It almost felt like in Saving Private Ryan when you find out
- 1:47:24what Tom Hanks does for a living.
- 1:47:26Right. I was shocked.
- 1:47:28Did you guys feel shocked when they revealed that MJ was a
- 1:47:33pediatric cardiovascular surgeon?
- 1:47:37Yes, I thought, I thought I. Was like the.
- 1:47:41I thought that he, I thought he gave out like tokens or at an
- 1:47:45arcade like a fucking tattoo artist or some shit, like I
- 1:47:48don't or a model like maybe 'cause you know, but like then.
- 1:47:52But then it made every other aspect of like his stillness.
- 1:47:56So like it make so much sense. That was a devastating back
- 1:48:01story. Yeah.
- 1:48:06And his game with the King of Diamonds was very, very tailored
- 1:48:15for both of the characters because they were both battling
- 1:48:18with these ethical and moral misgivings and misdeeds that
- 1:48:25they had done in their lives, asking each other.
- 1:48:29Really, the King of Spades, King of Diamonds was asking the
- 1:48:32question, like, which lives hold more value?
- 1:48:35And that was the whole proposition of the game.
- 1:48:39Who would you give this vaccine to if you only had like, 1000
- 1:48:42doses? Who should get it?
- 1:48:44And the game that he designed was designed for equality to
- 1:48:48take the decision out of who dies.
- 1:48:52The whole back story of MJ basically taking bribes
- 1:48:56basically and prioritizing the health of those who could afford
- 1:48:59it. The rich, super unethical stuff,
- 1:49:04I mean soul blackening stuff. And the game convicts him right
- 1:49:11it, you know, he feels like shit.
- 1:49:16I did something wrong. It makes me feel like shit.
- 1:49:19Exactly. Probably should as it as it
- 1:49:22should. And he tells the king which
- 1:49:24number he'll choose in the last round.
- 1:49:26He's like, I'll choose the number 100 when there are only
- 1:49:28two options left, two or three options left for who can win and
- 1:49:34who can lose. By doing so, he made the game
- 1:49:36unfair. Yeah, you know, he made the king
- 1:49:40of diamonds choose who to save and who to kill.
- 1:49:44Yeah, which, you know what? I it, it is unfair for him to do
- 1:49:50that to him. But you know what?
- 1:49:53Good gamesmanship. It was a nice strategy, but also
- 1:49:56born out of the wish to die. Yeah, 'cause he was hoping that.
- 1:50:02Yeah, he was. I deserved.
- 1:50:04He was kind of yeah, at, at, at the point.
- 1:50:06Where he definitely does. You know what?
- 1:50:08I I shouldn't be doing this. I shouldn't be living anymore.
- 1:50:11I've done some shady crap. That's pretty.
- 1:50:14I thought it was interesting that the king of diamonds had to
- 1:50:17choose the essentially the wrong number three times, so deny
- 1:50:23himself three times to die. And I was like, oh, this is
- 1:50:28getting really biblical. And I was like finding a lot of
- 1:50:31like three things, Trinity things in the show.
- 1:50:34That was one of them. And then he saves him.
- 1:50:36He basically kills himself and saves MJ.
- 1:50:40And the ACT brought him catharsis and peace, and he did
- 1:50:45it based on his own ideals and terms, and he felt unconquered
- 1:50:50and free when he died. Right.
- 1:50:53Exactly he did. So it's a very deep episode.
- 1:51:00Super. Yeah.
- 1:51:02Like, I mean, yeah, it was, it was really deep.
- 1:51:05It was really, really deep. So then we get to the final two
- 1:51:09episodes, seven and eight. There is a montage series of
- 1:51:14scenes of other face card games mixed in with Koena and CSI
- 1:51:21Anne. There's this shot of them
- 1:51:24walking away from an exploding building in slow MO while the
- 1:51:28queen of clubs flag like burns behind them.
- 1:51:31I was like iconic iconic bad blood music video vibes.
- 1:51:35Like I was like eating it up, lapping it up.
- 1:51:38Every time a suit would like like a blimp would explode and
- 1:51:41catch on fire. I was so in.
- 1:51:43I was like, that's more of that. Niragi still alive, still
- 1:51:49kicking. He's lost his mind even more.
- 1:51:52I thought he because he's like coughing up blood and shit.
- 1:51:54I was like my God, just like he should be down for the count
- 1:51:58already. He wasn't my God, he.
- 1:52:01Just kept going. Kept ticking.
- 1:52:03He doesn't even bother to put a man out of his misery when he
- 1:52:06comes across this dude who's botched his own suicide.
- 1:52:10Instead, he's sitting there laughing cruelly in this man's
- 1:52:13face. Basically like I'm going to make
- 1:52:15everyone I encounter suffer until like heal over a knock on
- 1:52:18Hell's door type of attitude. And I'm like, somebody shoot
- 1:52:22this man dead. Like the king of Spades can't
- 1:52:24come here for a minute. Like it is unfathomable how long
- 1:52:29this character is kept alive. Niragi rapist dude.
- 1:52:32I was shocked. Not that I think about the King
- 1:52:35of Spades. How long was he alive?
- 1:52:37Because he, like, was running through a few episodes, right?
- 1:52:43Yeah, he was. So like, I do love OK, so I love
- 1:52:46this showdown that they have where he's in the streets.
- 1:52:50It was like the last showdown, right?
- 1:52:52He yeah, they're back in in. The and.
- 1:52:56Hikaru, like, yeah, Hikaru, like, kicks like a rear view
- 1:53:00mirror off of a car and it hits him in the head.
- 1:53:04And while he's dazed, he gets hit by a car, dragged into
- 1:53:08another car. The car bursts into flames.
- 1:53:12Like, there was like, you can't make this up.
- 1:53:14You have all these people like, yeah, we did.
- 1:53:16And they're all getting gunned down.
- 1:53:18He just walks out of the fire. Incredibly implausible, but I
- 1:53:22loved that. Like that had me rolling just
- 1:53:24like. Literally.
- 1:53:25Terminator they literally had to kill him with like Ari so they
- 1:53:30he fashioned like a grenade, right Like.
- 1:53:32They had a grenade from MJ and I think this was like in season
- 1:53:36one that he gave, he gave it to a queen of this grenade.
- 1:53:40Yeah, and she. Still had it this whole time.
- 1:53:45I love this. Like slow.
- 1:53:46Motion. She's literally in a bra the
- 1:53:51whole time. Or a bathing suit top the whole
- 1:53:53time. In a pair of jeans.
- 1:53:55So where was she? Keeping.
- 1:53:57This like grenade? I don't know.
- 1:54:00This was my favorite. This was probably one of the
- 1:54:02most cathartic moments of the whole series for me because I
- 1:54:05was so ready for this dude to just die.
- 1:54:07Like I'm like just bro, like enough.
- 1:54:09Like what's it going to take? And that's what it took going to
- 1:54:12the second floor. I love how he just like rips the
- 1:54:15pen off of the grenade and throws it while they're bursting
- 1:54:19through glass. They're jumping out of the
- 1:54:21second story, like through a second story window and mid air
- 1:54:24the guy's like, throw it, Ari, so throw it, throw it and he
- 1:54:27throws it. It hits the king of spades and
- 1:54:29then it explodes. I was like, finally, there was
- 1:54:33no way to survive. The entire fight with the King
- 1:54:36of Spades, that showdown with our crew, right, and the fight
- 1:54:39in the alley, 10 out of 10. Yeah, that was really good
- 1:54:43stuff. 10 out of 10. I was, like, riveted.
- 1:54:46Yeah. The way the different ways in
- 1:54:48which the King of spades was just like going through these
- 1:54:52people. Like sometimes it got a little
- 1:54:55like fantastical. But then again, well, yeah, I
- 1:55:00was trying to be nice there, but it made for some very
- 1:55:04interesting, like shots and just like some really cool like,
- 1:55:08cinematography and just choreography as well.
- 1:55:12Very. Yeah, just intense as well.
- 1:55:15Yeah, for sure. But before that fight, Niragi
- 1:55:19again showing up in the intersection when our crew meets
- 1:55:23up and says, like, basically he wants a little bit more anarchy
- 1:55:29before he leaves this world and wants to see them suffer, wants
- 1:55:33to see them fear for their lives and fight back.
- 1:55:35And I just so like, takes the satisfaction away from him by
- 1:55:41just saying like, yeah, I'm going to lay down my weapon.
- 1:55:44Like, you can just kill me. I realize that you have a point
- 1:55:47in saying that I'm a hypocrite for taking the moral high ground
- 1:55:50when I just, I too, want to live and survive these games.
- 1:55:54So someone has to die if I live the whole thing of like Usagi
- 1:55:59showing up in the middle of this thing and she's just like
- 1:56:02standing in the wide open, no cover.
- 1:56:05And they all have Niragi clearly has a gun.
- 1:56:11I'm like, what the fuck are you doing, girl?
- 1:56:12Like take cover. And then there was a point where
- 1:56:15she runs after he starts shooting at her and she's about
- 1:56:19to get shot. And I'm like, why is the Robin
- 1:56:22not running at this point? That's she's so athletic.
- 1:56:25She wasn't shot. She could have run for her life
- 1:56:28and she doesn't. And this is when MJ stands in
- 1:56:32front of her and blocks the shot and takes a shot for her.
- 1:56:39Adiso shoots down Nidoggi at this point when I was like,
- 1:56:41that's an incredible shot. Like we got to talk about the
- 1:56:45aim that like Adiso has with the rifle, like that's that.
- 1:56:49I don't know how many yards that was, but I was like damn, we get
- 1:56:52a little yapfest from MJ at this point, which I have, which was I
- 1:56:58wanted to just do something that was a bit out of character.
- 1:57:01I know it's thanks to the people I met here.
- 1:57:03Honest people always seemed pretty stupid to me.
- 1:57:06I've always loved messing with people who try too hard at life.
- 1:57:09I hated selflessness. It's probably because I was
- 1:57:12jealous they all had something I was missing.
- 1:57:14It was like they could always see what what a pathetic and
- 1:57:17small minded person I really was.
- 1:57:19I was always afraid. That makes just so much like I
- 1:57:23kind of noticed the pattern too, right?
- 1:57:25Like it was everybody. I mean, they didn't really stick
- 1:57:29with it, but it was two things. Everyone was either a loser or
- 1:57:32like not living life to. The fullest.
- 1:57:35To the fullest. It's just it was too much.
- 1:57:40I'm like MJ was too much. MJ was too much.
- 1:57:42Thank God he lived though. Yeah, I I do.
- 1:57:45Like them Nidagi living until. The end of the show, if
- 1:57:47everybody else can live, he can like he can live like it's.
- 1:57:50Fine the rape is living though. I was like can we just like
- 1:57:53smother this guy in the whole in the bed next to?
- 1:57:56Him, let's make a game like literally just for him.
- 1:57:58One person like OK, yeah. Finale episode, Queen of Hearts.
- 1:58:03This is the one we've all been waiting for because we know
- 1:58:06there is a Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland pivotal
- 1:58:09character and we're waiting for this suit to come up.
- 1:58:12It is 3 rounds of croquet. It doesn't matter if you win.
- 1:58:15And because it's a Hearts game, oh shit's gonna go down like
- 1:58:21we're. I'm waiting for the other shoe
- 1:58:22to. Drop.
- 1:58:22The whole time I was too. I was like, OK, how crazy or how
- 1:58:27manipulative is this game going to get?
- 1:58:31Yes, I loved the aesthetic. When they got to the rooftop, I
- 1:58:36was like. Very high, high gloss, high like
- 1:58:39colour. Giant manicured White Rose
- 1:58:42garden. Of course I'm like, when are
- 1:58:44they going to paint these roses red?
- 1:58:46Like when is the blood going to flow because some shit's going
- 1:58:50to happen? When tea time happened, I did a
- 1:58:53little chuckle because I was like, of course tea Alice in
- 1:58:56Wonderland, there is a connection.
- 1:58:59But I was like, oh, she's feeding them hallucinogenic
- 1:59:03mushroom tea or something like that.
- 1:59:04Because obviously you can't eat or drink anything in Wonderland.
- 1:59:07Shit happens. And that's what happens, that
- 1:59:11they go into this dreamscape, like within their own minds.
- 1:59:18She gives three different scenarios.
- 1:59:21Did you believe I any of them like going?
- 1:59:24I thought they were all plausible except for the aliens.
- 1:59:27I was like fuck the. Aliens.
- 1:59:28No, I didn't want it to be the aliens because I would have been
- 1:59:31so mad if that was it. Like aliens?
- 1:59:33Really. But she get the three scenarios
- 1:59:37were what's really happening is you're playing the game within a
- 1:59:40virtual reality 1000 within virtual reality 1000 years in
- 1:59:43the future, humans have achieved basically eternal life and
- 1:59:48people start losing their drive to live.
- 1:59:50So now we are enamoured with a time before 1000 years ago and a
- 1:59:55time when people feared death in the end of the world.
- 1:59:58And I was like, yeah, that could definitely happen.
- 2:00:00They do show like a a little visual of him and Usagi the
- 2:00:06white rabbit, like in this Tron looking outfit suspended and
- 2:00:10like supposedly the future. And I was like, oh, that's
- 2:00:12plausible. So Tron coded.
- 2:00:14Yeah, Super Tron coded. And then the second one is the
- 2:00:18second scenario is the plants and mountains took over aliens
- 2:00:22abducted all of humanity and wiped out all of our memories
- 2:00:25and forced us to play countless games to conduct behavioral
- 2:00:27experiments on us. And I was like, definitely not
- 2:00:30the second option. Not the second that.
- 2:00:31Was definitely going to be the most boring one like.
- 2:00:35The third option she gave was like an addendum to the second
- 2:00:38one. A nuclear apocalypse wiped out
- 2:00:41most life. Wealthy elite living underground
- 2:00:44created androids with artificial memories, enjoyed's competing
- 2:00:47games on the surface, and the wealthy place bets on who will
- 2:00:50survive. And I was like, that's also kind
- 2:00:54of plausible, like. You know what?
- 2:00:56Not far. Craziest idea?
- 2:00:59Yeah, then you get this epic illusion.
- 2:01:03The illusion was the most The illusion was fantastic.
- 2:01:06The first one was the most interesting.
- 2:01:08And if that was going to be the ending, like in terms of like,
- 2:01:12because it makes sense, it's like 10 years from now, you're
- 2:01:13just using avatars. 20 years from now, you're doing this.
- 2:01:16Like, she really maps out where the world is going.
- 2:01:19But the illusion that was like, yeah.
- 2:01:24The illusion. Like it's like, oh, like because
- 2:01:26it was the most plausible out of all of them.
- 2:01:28It's like, so basically they go back and Adisu is hanging out
- 2:01:33with his friends and they're just kind of screwing around in
- 2:01:35Shibuya Crossing and, you know, instead of outrunning the cars,
- 2:01:39they get mowed down by cars. It seemed very plausible.
- 2:01:42I don't think I would have liked it as an ending.
- 2:01:44It was too like secret window cabin, window window cabin that
- 2:01:50that Johnny Depp movie that the kick started.
- 2:01:53Oh, he's just crazy for like every movie that came after it.
- 2:01:56For 10 years. But like I, I think that that
- 2:02:02was like the worst, that was definitely the worst heart game
- 2:02:06because it was so plausible. It was devastating that really
- 2:02:09these games are all in his head, which makes sense because he's a
- 2:02:13gamer and he, you know, is intelligent, right?
- 2:02:17You kind of believe it. Loaded with trauma.
- 2:02:22Yeah, I kind of would have been like, you know what?
- 2:02:25Yeah, this makes sense. He's racked with survivor's
- 2:02:27guilt, and that's why he's in the psychiatric facility.
- 2:02:30And the Queen of Hearts is actually his psychiatrist.
- 2:02:33And you know his friends are dead.
- 2:02:35It falls apart pretty quickly though.
- 2:02:37It falls apart pretty quickly because then like you got like
- 2:02:40how is home girl in this world with you if like.
- 2:02:43But you've created this world for yourself to figure out like
- 2:02:46why you're alive, why you exist and search for meeting in your
- 2:02:48own life. And I was like, well, we don't.
- 2:02:50We all kind of like create constructs for ourselves to
- 2:02:55figure out who we are and what what our purpose is in life and
- 2:02:59what's the meaning of our lives and what we want to do.
- 2:03:01And I was like taking it really deep in my mind.
- 2:03:05But then they move forward with Usagi is there and she tries to
- 2:03:10break the illusion. I like that.
- 2:03:14The way that played out though, it was sad.
- 2:03:16It was just really gum wrenching.
- 2:03:17It's like I was so attached to his friends even though they
- 2:03:19were only in two episodes. They did some good building.
- 2:03:21Also, don't die again. Don't die again.
- 2:03:25So they break, she manages to break the illusion and he
- 2:03:29realizes he doesn't take any pills.
- 2:03:31So like, great. I think the final words from the
- 2:03:36Queen of Hearts are life is just a game we play together.
- 2:03:39You should try to enjoy it. Right and.
- 2:03:42I was like, you know, I kind of like this.
- 2:03:45Craziest book, I mean. Like the pitcher parts was like
- 2:03:48not the worst like character in the end she was no definitely
- 2:03:51the most she was chewing up the most scenery.
- 2:03:54Oh, for sure, for sure. Like after.
- 2:03:57She was getting a lot of empathy too.
- 2:03:59Like she, like really she was moved by these.
- 2:04:01Characters. And she, she had a question.
- 2:04:05The question that she asked really stood out to me because
- 2:04:07it was something that I kept asking myself throughout the
- 2:04:10series because she's like, like, she almost, she gets as
- 2:04:14exasperated as she can. And she's like, why do you need
- 2:04:17to know the answer anyway? Like, why does it matter?
- 2:04:20Like what is the truth anyway? You're going through this.
- 2:04:23You watched your friends die. You watched all this
- 2:04:25devastation. Like, what does it matter if you
- 2:04:28go back to your own world? And there's a really big point
- 2:04:31in that because I don't know about you, but if I make it out
- 2:04:34of Borderland, I'm never going to sleep again thinking, oh
- 2:04:37shit, I'm going to wake up in Borderland or I'm going to go
- 2:04:40get coffee. And then when I come out of the
- 2:04:42bathroom, I'm in Borderland. So like, it was interesting that
- 2:04:46she kind of confronted that with I'm like, why is it so important
- 2:04:49to you to find out why anyway? Because.
- 2:04:51Does it matter? The best ending you're going to
- 2:04:53get probably isn't going to be that great.
- 2:04:56Which brings us probably to the. End all right, final 20 ish
- 2:05:00minutes, I guess it was actually.
- 2:05:03Well, they win the game and they have every remaining player gets
- 2:05:07a choice between staying in the game or leaving the game.
- 2:05:10The majority of our players choose to leave the game,
- 2:05:13including Adisa and Usagi. They wake up in Tokyo.
- 2:05:18You see a replay of episode one from season one, the fireworks
- 2:05:23going off. They're not actually fireworks.
- 2:05:24It's actually a meteorite striking Tokyo and blowing out
- 2:05:29the intersection, and all of our characters are in that same
- 2:05:34intersection and where the most blast damage happened.
- 2:05:38And something that I noticed is that the people who died in the
- 2:05:43game were the ones that were announced as dead by the news.
- 2:05:49Yes. Yeah.
- 2:05:50So I have a question about this. This is probably the biggest
- 2:05:55question of the series. A question.
- 2:05:58A question the game where were they?
- 2:06:03Was it like purgatory? Was it just a combined, like
- 2:06:09their minds were somehow together during this flux period
- 2:06:13where all of their hearts stopped?
- 2:06:16All of them. Yeah, I think it's still
- 2:06:18fantastical. And they still ended up in like
- 2:06:21a a lost like mirror dimension version version of Tokyo and
- 2:06:27this purgatory minute long Borderlands.
- 2:06:32This minute long death ends and I think it was just purgatory
- 2:06:35too. Like a fantastical purgatory.
- 2:06:39But all this is called into question.
- 2:06:40There is like a fourteen O 8 ending on this.
- 2:06:43I don't know if you've seen the movie 14 O 8, which infamously
- 2:06:46has that. Movie.
- 2:06:47Oh my God, so so the movie 14. I was thinking about that the
- 2:06:52whole time, like when she was asking why do you want to go
- 2:06:54back? I'm like, no, literally, because
- 2:06:56it's like, would you like milk in your tea?
- 2:06:58I didn't order tea, I ordered coffee.
- 2:06:59You'd turn around. It's the fucking queen again.
- 2:07:01I think, Oh my God, when am I going to get out of here?
- 2:07:04Oh God. So fourteen O 8.
- 2:07:05For those who don't know, I highly recommend that horror
- 2:07:07movie. But it infamously has many
- 2:07:10different endings, and a few of the endings are basically,
- 2:07:14you're still in the room. You're still in room 14 O 8,
- 2:07:16right? It's all in.
- 2:07:17A The maintenance guy's ripping the wall that took.
- 2:07:20Yeah. So this has a little bit of a
- 2:07:22fourteen O 8 ending. It's a bit of a dot dot dot
- 2:07:25because they zoom in outside the hospital onto a table with a
- 2:07:30suit of playing cards on it, and all the playing cards blow away
- 2:07:35in the wind except for the joker.
- 2:07:39The unsettling zoom in on that joker it.
- 2:07:43Was I was like, well, there, that's how they tease it.
- 2:07:47Yeah. That's how they tease.
- 2:07:49It it was the last suit that wasn't.
- 2:07:50It was the only thing that was well, the ace cards were.
- 2:07:55The ace cards were never. Touched.
- 2:07:56Oh, that's right. No, they they never ever
- 2:08:01mentioned the ace cards. We never saw the ace cards but I
- 2:08:03feel like when they were at the beach in season one the ace
- 2:08:06cards were on the wall that. They were.
- 2:08:09They already scratched and. They were in the deck.
- 2:08:12Oh they were in the deck. Why did they never show it like
- 2:08:17in game or in the show? I don't know why they never
- 2:08:20showed the gameplay for the Aces, but in any case I was
- 2:08:24expecting. I was like, where is the Joker?
- 2:08:28Like this didn't surprise me in the slightest.
- 2:08:30Yeah, I honestly forgot all. About yeah, me too.
- 2:08:32Like I forgot. Oh shit, I just forgot.
- 2:08:35Like just in general, like you think of a deck of cards, you
- 2:08:38think of the 52, but you like in my head I'm like, I always like
- 2:08:43move the jokers out. I, you know, put them away and I
- 2:08:46play with the 52. So like in my head it wasn't
- 2:08:49immediate, like let where's the joker card?
- 2:08:52But when I see it, that's like, oh, of course, of course the
- 2:08:57Joker card was still out there. I OK, I guess I was the only one
- 2:09:04that thought like jokers. Like you were you were
- 2:09:07anticipating, I was expecting. It.
- 2:09:09Yeah, me. I was just like, I was like, oh,
- 2:09:12they got all the cards, we're good.
- 2:09:14And then, but then when they showed it, I was like, oh duh,
- 2:09:17of course decks always come with a Joker card.
- 2:09:21So it was one of those things where I just didn't, I didn't
- 2:09:23even pay mine to that being a possibility.
- 2:09:28It's I think I always 'cause I play a lot of card games and the
- 2:09:32first thing I do with a joke or card is throw it away 'cause
- 2:09:35nobody uses. That yeah, nobody.
- 2:09:36So it doesn't cross my mind, but they did something.
- 2:09:41This ending kind of pisses me like a little bit, just a little
- 2:09:45bit, just a little bit. Because it's like, well, it got
- 2:09:48renewed for Season 3. Yes, there is a season three
- 2:09:50happening and I hope we we can reunite for season three if
- 2:09:54we're not too upset with it. I.
- 2:09:56Don't know do we want to so well, this might be like a big
- 2:10:01it's it's not really a spoiler. I don't think it's a spoiler
- 2:10:03because this is a pretty big departure from what happens in
- 2:10:06the manga and what the Joker is in the manga.
- 2:10:09But do we want to leave that? Off.
- 2:10:10No, absolutely say it. Well, I'm curious.
- 2:10:13Maybe spoiler for the next minute or so.
- 2:10:16OK, so yeah, I'll even throw out a warning too.
- 2:10:19Spoiler if you haven't read the manga, spoiler in case I don't
- 2:10:22know what's going to be in season three.
- 2:10:23So I don't know. But I do remember that in the
- 2:10:27manga, like the joker's like not just a suit, it's like a person.
- 2:10:31And it's this very Rorschach ish nightmarish like looking thing.
- 2:10:36Adisu can't tell if he's like a God or like a devil or like
- 2:10:41something good or bad. And all that's basically left is
- 2:10:44like he's the one who overseas the games and carries you in and
- 2:10:49out of Borderland more than anything.
- 2:10:52But in the show, like they're insinuating like, oh, you're
- 2:10:56still in the game. So I think they're going to take
- 2:10:59a departure from the manga and use it for that.
- 2:11:01Basically like the Joker. The Joker's card is to set up a
- 2:11:04season three, I think. But it, it, it really, like, I
- 2:11:09don't know about you guys, but it filled me with so much dread,
- 2:11:12like when that showed up because it's like, uh, are they still in
- 2:11:17it? Is it just like a cruel joke by
- 2:11:19the Joker? You know what I mean?
- 2:11:21That like they're getting a happy ending or at least an
- 2:11:24ability, like, is another game about to start?
- 2:11:26Yeah, I it's terrifying. I don't know if I was terrified
- 2:11:30as much as I was, like, yeah, here we go.
- 2:11:32Like, I don't know, I strapped in a little easier than you did,
- 2:11:38maybe. I see.
- 2:11:39I think I let, I think I just like really like let it ride.
- 2:11:42At that point, I'm like, OK, it's.
- 2:11:43Over but I I thought it was a fine ending without the Joker
- 2:11:48card and even if they decided never to renew it for season
- 2:11:50three, I'd be like all right, even if it had the Joker teaser,
- 2:11:56I would have been like. OK, I could take it or leave it.
- 2:11:58On one hand, it's like I really like the ending that they got
- 2:12:00because it's like, OK, it's now after everything we've been
- 2:12:03through, it's our time to build a new life.
- 2:12:05But on the other hand, like my the only thing that gets me
- 2:12:07about the Joker is like bro, what now?
- 2:12:10Like, you know, like this show is so dense.
- 2:12:12Like I can't like what are you going to?
- 2:12:14I'm interested, but what what now, bro?
- 2:12:17Like 8 episodes of what? Like where like the deck is done
- 2:12:21unless they bring in the aces. Like did they?
- 2:12:24I guess I don't know, but I love the ending.
- 2:12:27I did love the ending. Actually, a lot.
- 2:12:29But I did like it was kind of fucked up that like his friends
- 2:12:32are still dead. It's like so only so my friends
- 2:12:34are still like, no, it's like, yeah, but they didn't get hit by
- 2:12:37the car. No, but they.
- 2:12:38Still, I know, I know they got hit by a meteorite, which is
- 2:12:40like even more like it's a freak thing.
- 2:12:44Right. You can't prepare that's.
- 2:12:45What you can do about that? Yeah, yeah.
- 2:12:49All right. We got through the whole show.
- 2:12:51Is there anything else that you guys wanted to add about Alice
- 2:12:54in Borderland or the experience of watching it or?
- 2:12:59I honestly think that this show would benefit from like pacing
- 2:13:05yourself, like if it because they release them all at the
- 2:13:08same time. But I think that if you're going
- 2:13:11to watch it, don't watch them all like in a row, you know,
- 2:13:15maybe break it up a couple episodes, you know, take a
- 2:13:18break, take. That's my opinion of it, because
- 2:13:21I think that allows you to let the episodes breathe a little
- 2:13:25bit. For sure, I agree.
- 2:13:27I agree. I think it's I think prepare for
- 2:13:30the tone to be like a little bit cartoony at times and you'll be
- 2:13:35OK. Like just view it like a live
- 2:13:37action anime the way you did, like Sucker Punch or Kill Bill.
- 2:13:41I think if somebody would have told me it was like that, I
- 2:13:43would have been a little more receptive, like right off rip.
- 2:13:46But other than but I, I mean, I still like the show, but it's
- 2:13:49just like if someone was told me like, hey, this gets kind of
- 2:13:51cartoony. I would have been like, OK,
- 2:13:52like, so it is a bit cartoony just a little bit.
- 2:13:55And I agree with Rico. This is not you don't this show
- 2:13:58is dense. You don't want to binge the
- 2:13:59show. You're going to enjoy it more if
- 2:14:01you watch it in chunks like of like one episode, 2 episodes Max
- 2:14:07per day like. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:14:10Well, these are some tips and tricks for us.
- 2:14:13If you've made it this far and spoiled the whole show for
- 2:14:15yourself and you're like, how do how should I best watch the
- 2:14:18show? This is how you should watch it.
- 2:14:20If you still want to watch all the way through.
- 2:14:22I think it's worth it. Well worth a watch.
- 2:14:25And we all still really enjoyed it.
- 2:14:26Four to five, 4 1/2 out of five. We highly recommend it.
- 2:14:30So thank you both for coming on the show.
- 2:14:34Thanks for having me. Look forward to Alice in
- 2:14:37Borderlands season three. Yeah, hit me up if you got any
- 2:14:40other shows down. The line, Yep, season three will
- 2:14:43be here, but we're see where the show goes at this point.
- 2:14:47Yeah, you know, how crazy can it really get?
- 2:14:50I know. What are they gonna do?
- 2:14:52Are they gonna ruin it? I don't know.
- 2:14:53I hope not. Hopefully not.
- 2:14:55I really hope. Not.
- 2:14:56Hopefully not. And leave his friends dead if
- 2:14:58you're going to leave them. Dead.
- 2:14:59Don't bring the friends back, please.
- 2:15:01That'd be too cruel. Anyway, that's been our show.
- 2:15:04Appreciate you guys listening to this long one, but that's it.
- 2:15:08I'm Jessica and this has been the Tabaki Rambles podcast.
