- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 17th of September and it is my, well, kind of my
- 0:20dubious pleasure to wish you a very happy International Country
- 0:26Music Day. If you are a country music fan,
- 0:30today is the one day that you can just put on your favourite
- 0:33tunes unabashedly and when people complain, you can say it
- 0:38is my day. It is International Day of
- 0:41Country twang and music. If you are into that, God bless
- 0:47you. Knock your socks off.
- 0:48If you are not into country music, put your headphones on
- 0:52and run through the day and maybe you can avoid some.
- 0:54It's, it's a fairly divisive topic.
- 0:56Look, I don't mind a little bit of Garth Brooks and Shania
- 0:59Twain, although I think that's pretty soft as far as country
- 1:01music goes. I'm sure there are country
- 1:03Western fans out there who would go.
- 1:05Ah, Sean, you've got no idea. And yes, that is probably true,
- 1:10but that's OK. But country music aside, there
- 1:13are other things going on today. Like today is Part 1 of the two
- 1:18part story that ends with a cliffhanger today and then gets
- 1:22picked up and finished off tomorrow.
- 1:25So we are going to read the first half, which ends with Paul
- 1:28taking a deep inhalation, ready to share this phenomenal message
- 1:31to an angry crowd. And then we'll have to wait all
- 1:34day until tomorrow to hear that message.
- 1:36So let us read this story as we share together Acts chapter 21.
- 1:52After saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we sailed
- 1:55straight to the island of Kos. The next day we reached roads
- 2:00and then went to Patara. There we boarded a ship sailing
- 2:04for Phoenicia. We sighted the island of Cyprus,
- 2:08passed it on our left and landed at the harbour of Tyre in Syria,
- 2:12where the ship was to unload its cargo.
- 2:15We went to shore, found the local believers and stayed with
- 2:18them for a week. These believers prophesied
- 2:21through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go to Jerusalem.
- 2:25When we returned to the ship at the end of the week, the entire
- 2:29congregation, including women and children, left the city and
- 2:33came down to the shore with us. There we knelt, prayed and set
- 2:37our farewells. Then we went aboard and they
- 2:40returned home. The next stop after leaving Tyre
- 2:44was Tolomase, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and
- 2:48stayed for one day. The next day we went on to say
- 2:51Syria and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of
- 2:55the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food.
- 2:58He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.
- 3:02Several days later, a man named Agabus, who also had the gift of
- 3:06prophecy, arrived from Judea. He came over, took Paul's belt
- 3:11and bound his own feet and hands with it.
- 3:14Then he said, The Holy Spirit declares, So shall the owner of
- 3:19this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned
- 3:23over to the Gentiles. When we heard this, we and the
- 3:27local believers all begged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.
- 3:31But he said, Why all this weeping?
- 3:34You're breaking my heart. I am ready not only to be gaoled
- 3:38at Jerusalem, but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.
- 3:42When it was clear that we couldn't persuade him, we gave
- 3:45up and said the Lord's will be done.
- 3:50After this, we packed our things and left for Jerusalem.
- 3:54Some believers from, Say, Saria accompanied us, and they took us
- 3:57to the home of Manassen, a man originally from Cyprus and one
- 4:01of the early believers. When we arrived, the brothers
- 4:05and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly.
- 4:08The next day, Paul went with us to meet with James, and all the
- 4:12elders of the Jerusalem church were present.
- 4:15After greeting them, Paul gave a detailed account of the things
- 4:19God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.
- 4:23After hearing this, they praised God.
- 4:26And then they said, you know, dear brother, how many thousands
- 4:30of Jews have also believed? And they all follow the law of
- 4:34Moses very seriously. But the Jewish believers here in
- 4:38Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews
- 4:41who live among the Gentiles to turn their backs on the laws of
- 4:44Moses. They've heard that you teach
- 4:46them not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish
- 4:50customs. What should we do?
- 4:52They will certainly hear that you have come.
- 4:57Here's what we want you to do. We have 4 men here who have
- 5:01completed their vow. Go with them to the temple and
- 5:04join them in the purification ceremony, paying for them to
- 5:07have their heads ritually shaved.
- 5:09Then everyone will know that the rumours are all false and that
- 5:13you yourself observed the Jewish laws.
- 5:16As for the Gentile believers, they should do what we already
- 5:19told them in a letter. They should abstain from eating
- 5:22food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of
- 5:26strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.
- 5:30So Paul went to the temple the next day with the other men.
- 5:34They had already started the purification ritual, so he
- 5:37publicly announced the date when their vows would end and
- 5:41sacrifices would be offered for each of them.
- 5:44The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province
- 5:47of Asia saw Paul in the temple and roused a mob against him.
- 5:52They grabbed him yelling Men of Israel, help us.
- 5:55This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere
- 5:59and tells everybody to disobey the Jewish laws.
- 6:03He speaks against the temple and even defiles this holy place by
- 6:07bringing in Gentiles, for earlier that day they had seen
- 6:11him in the city with Trophemus, A Gentile from Ephesus, and they
- 6:15assumed Paul had taken him into the temple.
- 6:19The whole city was rocked by these accusations and a great
- 6:23riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out
- 6:27of the temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind
- 6:30him. As they were trying to kill him,
- 6:33word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all
- 6:35Jerusalem was in an uproar. He immediately called out his
- 6:39soldiers and officers and ran down among the crowd.
- 6:43When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they
- 6:46stopped beating Paul. Then the commander arrested him
- 6:49and ordered him bound with two chains.
- 6:52He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done.
- 6:56Some shouted one thing and some another.
- 6:59Since he couldn't find out the truth and all the uproar and
- 7:01confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress.
- 7:05As Paul reached the stairs, the mob grew so violent the soldiers
- 7:10had to lift him to their shoulders to protect him, and
- 7:13the crowd followed behind shouting Kill him, kill him.
- 7:17As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the
- 7:20commander, May I have a word with you?
- 7:22Do you know Greek? The commander asked, surprised.
- 7:26Aren't you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and
- 7:30took 4000 members of the assassins out into the desert?
- 7:34No, Paul replied. I am a Jew and a citizen of
- 7:38Tarsus in Cecilia, which is an important city.
- 7:42Please let me talk to these people.
- 7:45The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned
- 7:50to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped
- 7:54the crowd and he addressed them in their own language.
- 7:58Aramaic. Oh Lord, even you love a
- 8:12cliffhanger, but thank you for your words.
- 8:15Thank you for the message that you have for us.
- 8:19Thank you for the example of Paul, that you draw him to
- 8:23Jerusalem. And while others can see that
- 8:25this is a dangerous move for him, he just boldly responds to
- 8:29what he believes. Your call is for him.
- 8:34Jesus, you have a bigger agenda than just our comfort today.
- 8:40Your Kingdom has got bigger boundaries and a more important
- 8:43mission than the things that we would think about day in and day
- 8:47out. So like you did with Paul, Lord,
- 8:50I just pray that you convict us that following your plan for our
- 8:56lives, that stepping out in faith to serve you, that this is
- 9:00the most important thing that we can do and at the details of our
- 9:04life. Wow, that is held in your hands,
- 9:07your loving, providing generous hands, but that you draw us into
- 9:14a life of service to you, Our Lord, shift our lenses of our
- 9:20eyes and our hearts. That we would see and experience
- 9:24this world as you do, seeing your priorities and that they
- 9:28become ours. And that we are willing to step
- 9:30out in faith, boldly answering the call, your Kingdom call, and
- 9:35not always looking out for our own well being and our own
- 9:38comfort. So here we are, Lord, your
- 9:41people, take us, use us. We are yours, and we love you
- 9:47and we are loved by you. And it's in your loving name
- 9:51that we pray, Jesus, Amen.
