- 6:28Speaker 4: You'll get on the other phone and call the phone company.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Have this open wire, trace right, and when you got
- 6:32Speaker 4: the address, call Maddie. This is an invitation to trouble.
- 6:34Speaker 4: We might as well be legal about accepting it.
- 6:50Speaker 10: Well, all I've got to say is Nick, if you
- 6:52Speaker 10: interrupted my sandwich to bring me here in a full salaam,
- 6:56Speaker 10: what do you do?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Sark?
- 6:58Speaker 5: All right? I don't know.
- 7:01Speaker 10: For years Nick's been breaking into my meals. I still
- 7:04Speaker 10: haven't figured out.
- 7:05Speaker 5: What to do about it.
- 7:06Speaker 4: There's no false alarm aty.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Nobody's answering the door.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Nick, You sure it's the right house?
- 7:11Speaker 4: Sure it is Robert Bixby one oh three five? Russell plays,
- 7:14Speaker 4: Uh huh.
- 7:14Speaker 5: I'd still like to know what this is all about.
- 7:17Speaker 4: So would I? All right if I use a skeletal key.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Look are you sure, he groaned on the.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Phone on my word of honor?
- 7:25Speaker 5: Sergeant, all right, all right, let's go in and have
- 7:28Speaker 5: a look.
- 7:28Speaker 7: Good.
- 7:34Speaker 10: Well, you got that door open quick enough, you know, Nick.
- 7:37Speaker 10: Sometimes I'm glad you're on the right side of the law.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Except when Nick interrupts your meals.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Oh yeah, and if this is a false alone isn't.
- 7:46Speaker 4: But I know it now? Why look on the left
- 7:50Speaker 4: in the library. Why?
- 7:52Speaker 5: Oh, holy smoked, it.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Says Robert Bixby. All right, and he's dead and were
- 8:02Speaker 4: smack in the middle of a murder case.
- 8:03Speaker 5: He was trigled. Look at the fingermarks only through.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Golly, see the way his head tilts, Maddie.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Yeah, his neck's broken.
- 8:12Speaker 4: He died instantly, but he telephoned his neck. No he didn't, Patsy,
- 8:17Speaker 4: not with a broken neck. What someone else called us?
- 8:19Speaker 4: Someone who was here during or immediately after the murderer? Oh,
- 8:23Speaker 4: give me the aluminum part of kit my kid, will you?
- 8:26Speaker 10: I want to dust the phone for fingerprints, right, no matter,
- 8:29Speaker 10: you better look around see if anything looks displaced, are missing?
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, okay, we'll do thanks. Hm. Not a sign
- 8:42Speaker 4: of a print, Nick, No, whoever telephone may have grown
- 8:46Speaker 4: made sure to wipe all prints off the phone.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Well, the place doesn't look as though it's been searched, Nick,
- 8:52Speaker 5: nothing's been touched.
- 8:54Speaker 4: That's funny.
- 8:56Speaker 10: Several thousand dollars worth of rare books and literary material
- 8:59Speaker 10: in this room and nothing was taken.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Then it wasn't murder for robbery, No.
- 9:05Speaker 5: God found it?
- 9:06Speaker 4: Why was old Bixby killed? And who called me? And why?
- 9:10Speaker 11: Hey?
- 9:10Speaker 5: Wait a minute, Nick, here's something under Bixby's feet. It
- 9:14Speaker 5: looks like a letter or something.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Let's have a look at it where I get it
- 9:18Speaker 4: out of the envelope.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Looks pretty old.
- 9:21Speaker 4: It's probably be part of Bixby's collection. Uh huh, stated
- 9:25Speaker 4: seventeen eighty.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Seventeen eighty. Oh, let me see.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Seems to be some kind of an apology.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Me.
- 9:32Speaker 3: It's sign George r R.
- 9:35Speaker 4: That means Rex Latin for king, and.
- 9:37Speaker 5: This was signed by King George.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Yeah, King George third. Judging by the date, that.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Must be the World Code of Arms on the envelope.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Do you really mean that letters from a king?
- 9:48Speaker 3: It's a royal apology, Sergeant. Isn't that exciting?
- 9:51Speaker 4: Not only exciting, Patsy, but it also gives us an
- 9:53Speaker 4: angle on this case. What's done a letter's a forgery?
- 9:56Speaker 3: It is, how do you know?
- 9:58Speaker 4: Never mind that right now, Patty my word for it.
- 10:01Speaker 4: But a man like Bixby would never have a forgery
- 10:03Speaker 4: like this in his collection. Evidently his death was in
- 10:06Speaker 4: some way connected with this king's apology. And I have
- 10:10Speaker 4: an idea. What's not going to suppose you go ahead
- 10:12Speaker 4: with the departmental routine, Mary, sure, Nick, and we're going
- 10:15Speaker 4: to check our files for a forger who can do
- 10:17Speaker 4: this kind of work. And if we find the man
- 10:19Speaker 4: who forged this letter, we may find the man who
- 10:21Speaker 4: murdered Bixby.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Tom, Tom, stop that pasting.
- 10:40Speaker 3: You're giving me a headache.
- 10:41Speaker 7: I can't help it.
- 10:43Speaker 6: I could strangle him all over again, sitting there so
- 10:49Speaker 6: he were my judge.
- 10:50Speaker 7: But he did, isn't it?
- 10:51Speaker 5: Yes?
- 10:52Speaker 6: And I could kill him again, and I could kill
- 10:55Speaker 6: each day forever, to ruin the work of five years.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Thanks what he wanted.
- 11:00Speaker 7: One word from Bixby and we would have been finished.
- 11:03Speaker 3: But we're not.
- 11:05Speaker 6: For five years, I've been honest for five years. I
- 11:09Speaker 6: built up a reputation for this moment.
- 11:13Speaker 4: It trust me.
- 11:13Speaker 6: Now, those fools who buy letters and autographs. They believe
- 11:17Speaker 6: in me, and in six months we'll unload every fortuery.
- 11:21Speaker 5: We'll make a fortune.
- 11:23Speaker 3: That's what I've been waiting for.
- 11:24Speaker 6: You've been a good wife, Rita. You played along with
- 11:27Speaker 6: me during those years when we had to be honest.
- 11:31Speaker 7: And don't think it didn't hurt ah.
- 11:33Speaker 4: But now comes the payoffs.
- 11:35Speaker 6: We'll make two hundred thousand, maybe three, and we can't
- 11:39Speaker 6: pissed up. Now that Bixby is bad, we can rise
- 11:42Speaker 6: twenty Okay.
- 11:46Speaker 12: Yes, girl, Yes, this is prior. Yes, I want you
- 11:51Speaker 12: to come over to my place for a talk. Why
- 11:55Speaker 12: I got bad news.
- 11:56Speaker 4: For you, girl? Talk straight?
- 11:58Speaker 12: Prior when Fixby got you up to his place.
- 12:02Speaker 4: How did you find out about that? I was there? Girl?
- 12:06Speaker 9: What FIXEDV had me hidden in the next room?
- 12:09Speaker 12: He was going to confront us?
- 12:10Speaker 4: Girl, you get it all set up.
- 12:14Speaker 12: That's right, I know all about it.
- 12:16Speaker 9: I think you better come over to my place for
- 12:18Speaker 9: a talk right away.
- 12:21Speaker 12: It cost you money if you want me to ford
- 12:24Speaker 12: you an alibi for murder.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Now, let's see Nick.
- 12:39Speaker 11: We've been to see Joe Dyer, Eddie Barker, Sam Browning
- 12:43Speaker 11: and Billy Webster.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah. Not a reaction, not of any.
- 12:47Speaker 11: Of them, leaving John Prior, Henry Foster, and Steve Screenner
- 12:52Speaker 11: as the possible forges of the King's Apology.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Let's hope we have some luck with at least one
- 12:56Speaker 4: of them.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, who are we visiting now?
- 13:02Speaker 4: The next man on the list, John Cryer?
- 13:04Speaker 3: Uh huh, Well, what's your attack going to be?
- 13:07Speaker 4: Within same as the others? Surprise, sudden shock. Got a
- 13:12Speaker 4: ground floor apartment in the rear. Now that must be
- 13:15Speaker 4: the door down there. That the hole right.
- 13:24Speaker 3: The way. Do not give me to shanksnake so Stern
- 13:27Speaker 3: and officials.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Which is precisely why I do it, give us a
- 13:30Speaker 4: psychological edge. Yes you're John Pryor. Yes, I'm Nick Carter

- 19:30Speaker 4: Coman Hey, Nick.
- 19:32Speaker 5: We haven't gotten anywhere and a part with us. But
- 19:37Speaker 5: for the love of heaven, what happened to you too?
- 19:40Speaker 7: Hello?
- 19:40Speaker 4: Sergy, Hi, Maddie, come help Patsy and me somemere ointment
- 19:44Speaker 4: on our faces?
- 19:45Speaker 5: I repeat what happened to you?
- 19:48Speaker 4: We met the killer?
- 19:49Speaker 5: Did you get him?
- 19:50Speaker 11: No?
- 19:51Speaker 3: He nearly got up.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Look, I'd better sit down.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Yes, do you see made? We were at trapped in
- 19:59Speaker 4: us a storage room with.
- 20:01Speaker 3: An open gas pipe.
- 20:03Speaker 5: With an open gas pipe.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Yeah, an open gas pipe. The killer renched the fixture
- 20:07Speaker 4: off and left the gas pouring into the room. But
- 20:10Speaker 4: what did you do?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Well, Nick, found the pipe and light of the gas.
- 20:13Speaker 3: That's how our faces got burned.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Yes, that stuff flamed out like a volcano. Luckily there
- 20:19Speaker 4: wasn't enough gas in the room to cause a real explosion.
- 20:22Speaker 5: I'll be dawned.
- 20:23Speaker 11: Then we pounded on the door and yelled until the
- 20:25Speaker 11: janitor came and let us out.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Of course, by that time the killer was gone forever.
- 20:30Speaker 3: I guess.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Oh no, we're not licked yet, Bessy, that a boy.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Nick's okay? But have you got any idea I have?
- 20:39Speaker 4: We're going to catch this killer with a king's apology?
- 20:41Speaker 5: You mean the pogery?
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 20:43Speaker 3: Well what do we do?
- 20:44Speaker 4: While I've been nursing my blisters, I've been doing some thinking.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Betty Prior wasn't working on this forgery alone.
- 20:50Speaker 3: Oh you don't think so, I don't now.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Look, Look, have a heart, I'm not caught up on
- 20:55Speaker 5: this case yet. Who's Prior?
- 20:58Speaker 4: I'll brief you later, man, if they worked this out
- 21:01Speaker 4: with Patsy. First, we haven't much time, Okay, go ahead. Now,
- 21:04Speaker 4: Prior was a forger, but he couldn't sell his forgeries himself.
- 21:08Speaker 4: He needed a front man, a dealer to do that.
- 21:10Speaker 4: So there's a strong chance he was killed by the
- 21:11Speaker 4: dealer who was working with him. Good day, go on,
- 21:14Speaker 4: that's where our trick starts.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Hill. Wat's the track.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Well, first, you go crazy, go crazy? Yes, man, Mary,
- 21:22Speaker 4: and I chase you.
- 21:24Speaker 3: So why do you chase me?
- 21:25Speaker 4: Because you've got the King's Apology and you're going to
- 21:28Speaker 4: run with it until you're running to the killer.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Patsy takes the forged letter and listens carefully to her instruction,
- 21:42Speaker 2: her face brightening as Nick unfolds the mechanism of the trap.
- 21:45Speaker 2: We'll learn what it is in just a moment. Now
- 21:52Speaker 2: for the conclusion of the case of the King's Apology.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Today's Adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by new
- 21:59Speaker 2: post war old Dutch cleanser. For an hour of Valentine Street,
- 22:03Speaker 2: where most of the city's autograph dealers have their shops,
- 22:06Speaker 2: has been watching a curious spectacle. A girl has walked
- 22:09Speaker 2: into one shop after another displayed a letter screamed at
- 22:13Speaker 2: the astonished proprietor, and then run out. She is followed
- 22:17Speaker 2: cautiously by two men who make profound apologies for her. Finally,
- 22:21Speaker 2: she enters the shop of Thomas gaul.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Yit madam, May I.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Be of service to you?
- 22:31Speaker 3: Do you tell autograph?
- 22:33Speaker 6: Yes, madam, I have a very fine stuff for your consideration.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Uh huh do you buy them too?
- 22:39Speaker 5: Wait?
- 22:40Speaker 7: Madam, if it is of it?
- 22:43Speaker 11: What may it's rarero letter a king's apology, King George
- 22:48Speaker 11: the third of England.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Where did you get that letter? Madam?
- 22:51Speaker 3: Oh I I.
- 22:52Speaker 7: Found Where did you get the letter?
- 22:54Speaker 3: Well? Maybe it isn't legal, but I found it and
- 22:58Speaker 3: find your keepers. I was outside a house on Russell
- 23:01Speaker 3: Place this morning. Uh huh, number ten thirty five rec
- 23:05Speaker 3: Ad Place. A man came running out and he dropped
- 23:07Speaker 3: the slater.
- 23:09Speaker 7: What did he what?
- 23:10Speaker 3: You're the man? I know you're the man. You're the
- 23:12Speaker 3: man came running out.
- 23:13Speaker 7: He said, come quick, you're the mail man.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Out of the house, and that she was murdered. You
- 23:17Speaker 3: dropped the sweater.
- 23:17Speaker 11: I know it.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I want you want the arrested.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Your hands on me. You're not.
- 23:28Speaker 7: Where we are not nothing till we get.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Help.
- 23:34Speaker 7: Me get her into the bank of the store.
- 23:38Speaker 3: You want to burn from murder?
- 23:41Speaker 4: No, I know in this with me, it's got to
- 23:45Speaker 4: be shut up for good. What h You left the
- 23:50Speaker 4: transom over your door open.
- 23:52Speaker 5: We heard everything.
- 23:54Speaker 4: It's a sergeant methods an No, the homicide squad. You
- 23:57Speaker 4: heard the confession, mattery, every blessed word, Nick, do you
- 24:00Speaker 4: mind releasing the young lady. She's my assistant, Miss Patsy Bowen,
- 24:03Speaker 4: You're assistant, that's right. She pulled his act. And every
- 24:06Speaker 4: dealer in the street.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Huh what famous to all think I'm crazy?
- 24:11Speaker 4: Pat We explained as we followed you. Mister Gall's confession
- 24:14Speaker 4: will do the rest.
- 24:15Speaker 3: But you were luck.
- 24:16Speaker 7: He must tell her you couldn't be here.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Oh girl, I'm not an optical illusion. I'm just the
- 24:22Speaker 4: man with a bad news. Sergeant Mathieson wants you for murder.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Yes, murder.
- 24:26Speaker 4: I'm afraid you're invited to keep a date for the
- 24:27Speaker 4: state's executioner with no apologies accepted.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Nick, there are a couple of things about this case
- 24:42Speaker 3: I haven't figured out yet.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Go ahead, beby well.
- 24:44Speaker 3: First, who killed Bixby Goll?
- 24:47Speaker 5: Did?
- 24:48Speaker 3: Okay? Then? Who called you from Bixby's.
- 24:51Speaker 4: House Pryor, Why did he do that? Gall said in
- 24:55Speaker 4: his confession that Prior was in love with Rita and
- 24:57Speaker 4: wanted her for himself. Uh huh, was apparently willing to
- 25:00Speaker 4: help him double cross Gall, and then turned Gall over
- 25:03Speaker 4: to the police for murder.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Oh, so when Prior found you, he was setting up
- 25:08Speaker 3: the case.
- 25:09Speaker 4: That's right, one of the police to close in on
- 25:11Speaker 4: Goal quickly. That would increase the pressure and make the
- 25:13Speaker 4: blackmail easy. Then after he had all Gall's money, he
- 25:17Speaker 4: could turn him in and go off with Rita.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Well, I see, now one last thing. What since when
- 25:24Speaker 3: have you been an autograph expert?
- 25:26Speaker 4: I am not.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Then how did you know the King's apology was a
- 25:30Speaker 3: forgery the minute youre looked at it?
- 25:31Speaker 4: Oh that's simple.
- 25:33Speaker 3: You were playing a hunch.
- 25:34Speaker 4: No, I knew, and happened to be one of the
- 25:36Speaker 4: odd bits of information I've picked up here and there.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Well, how did you know?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Well, the letter was dated seventeen eighty and the envelope
- 25:42Speaker 4: or the Royal Arms of England.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Uh huh.
- 25:45Speaker 4: The addressed on the envelope was in the same writing
- 25:47Speaker 4: as the letter. Besides, the envelope matched the paper and
- 25:50Speaker 4: looked just as old.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yeah, but that makes it sound genuine.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Maybe so, but it proved it was a forgery. You see,
- 25:56Speaker 4: pass while the letter was dated seventeen eighty, envelopes were
- 26:00Speaker 4: known before about eighteen thirty. Ah Bryer made a mistake.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Well how about that, And all the while I thought
- 26:09Speaker 3: you were guessing, Nick, I.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Fouled the Master quite all right, Ptcy, Your apologies accepted.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Nick Carter.

- 27:42Speaker 13: You're listening to the great detectives of Old time Radio
- 27:45Speaker 13: with Adam Graham. Now let's get back into the show.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Welcome back, Well. I was kind of surprised to see
- 27:58Speaker 1: the uh teaser scene actually worked into the episode, but
- 28:02Speaker 1: they managed it and it worked fairly well given that
- 28:06Speaker 1: we knew who the killer was from the beginning. Now,
- 28:10Speaker 1: as much as I love Colombo, I'm not a huge
- 28:14Speaker 1: fan of episodes where during the golden age of radio,
- 28:21Speaker 1: the audience knows who the killer is, because usually it's
- 28:25Speaker 1: not a clever inverted mystery going on, but it's a
- 28:29Speaker 1: little bit more melodrama. This one didn't play out so
- 28:34Speaker 1: bad because I thought there were some great scenes, particularly
- 28:37Speaker 1: with Maddie that were kind of funny, and also some
- 28:40Speaker 1: good moments between Nick and Patsy. But at any rate,
- 28:44Speaker 1: that will do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow
- 28:47Speaker 1: with yours truly, Johnny Doler, and then next Thursday, be
- 28:51Speaker 1: sure and join us for another episode in Nick Carter
- 28:54Speaker 1: but from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Grahamson
- 28:58Speaker 1: and off
