- 0:58Speaker 1: the marquee game. I have 10 minutes to take calls.
- 1:02Speaker 1: NFL thoughts, college football thoughts from the weekend.
- 1:06Speaker 3: 877-99 on Fox.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That is 877-99 on Fox. It's the only segment we
- 1:12Speaker 1: have to take phone calls today. I want to start
- 1:14Speaker 1: by asking Dan Beyer a quick question here. He's a
- 1:18Speaker 1: big Seahawks fan. Dan, what were your thoughts? Kenneth Walker,
- 1:23Speaker 1: one Super Bowl MVP for the Seahawks. You love the Seahawks.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And then Kenneth Walker, well, the Seahawks decided to part
- 1:30Speaker 1: ways with Kenneth Walker and the Chiefs decided to pick
- 1:33Speaker 1: him up. What were your feelings when you lost the
- 1:35Speaker 1: Super Bowl.
- 1:36Speaker 3: MVP, Dan?
- 1:37Speaker 4: I was cool with it because I wasn't sure on
- 1:41Speaker 4: what Kenneth Walker, Kansas City, would be getting. At that time,
- 1:44Speaker 4: it seemed like Kenneth Walker really increased his free agent
- 1:48Speaker 4: value with the run when Zach Charbonnet went down with
- 1:51Speaker 4: the injury. But he was splitting time with Charbonnet throughout
- 1:55Speaker 4: the last season. So, honestly, Stu, when he had that
- 1:58Speaker 4: great run in the playoffs, it was like, good on you,
- 2:01Speaker 4: thanks for helping us win a Super Bowl, and best
- 2:03Speaker 4: of luck wherever you land in free agency.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And what have your feelings been thus far as you've
- 2:08Speaker 1: watched Kenneth Walker essentially be the MVP of the NFL
- 2:11Speaker 1: through four or five weeks here?
- 2:13Speaker 4: How was Kenneth Walker splitting reps with Zach Charbonnet all
- 2:16Speaker 4: of last season?
- 2:18Speaker 3: What is going on here? It's true.
- 2:21Speaker 4: And there's even to make it worse. And again, you
- 2:24Speaker 4: can fall back. You and Taylor talk about this. Taylor
- 2:27Speaker 4: can always fall back. Well, the Knicks won, so no
- 2:29Speaker 4: matter what they did, it ended up working out for them.
- 2:32Speaker 4: But they also gave Rashid Shaheed a contract that pays
- 2:35Speaker 4: him about $ 17 million a year. Kenneth Walker's making less,
- 2:39Speaker 4: and now you see what Kenneth Walker's doing to the Chiefs,
- 2:41Speaker 4: and you can kind of scratch your head and say, huh?
- 2:44Speaker 4: But at the time, I was cool with it.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So the reason– and you should have been cool with
- 2:49Speaker 1: it because you have to prioritize. There's only so much
- 2:52Speaker 1: money you could fit under the NFL salary cap. And, Dan,
- 2:56Speaker 1: the reason I'm confused is– If Kenneth Walker is indeed
- 3:00Speaker 1: the MVP, and you can make that argument through four weeks,
- 3:03Speaker 1: he has been as valuable to his team as any
- 3:05Speaker 1: player in the NFL.
- 3:08Speaker 3: But the Seahawks are 3-1 without him. And so I just,
- 3:11Speaker 3: I'm not certain what to do in terms of defining
- 3:15Speaker 3: the value of having Kenneth Walker on your team. Does
- 3:18Speaker 3: that make sense? That makes total sense.
- 3:20Speaker 4: And coming off of a game yesterday where Emmanuel Wilson
- 3:23Speaker 4: ran really well against the Chargers, ended up having a
- 3:25Speaker 4: 80 yards on the ground a touchdown also had a
- 3:27Speaker 4: receiving touchdown Emmanuel Wilson is supposed to be the backup
- 3:31Speaker 4: to Jadarian Price the rookie who's hurt and Zach Charbonnet
- 3:34Speaker 4: hasn't even played yet so you're talking about what would
- 3:37Speaker 4: essentially be the third most important running back this season
- 3:40Speaker 4: ends up scoring two touchdowns and when you're paying him
- 3:43Speaker 4: you know minimal amount of dollars it makes it that
- 3:47Speaker 4: much easier to see Kenneth Walker do what he did
- 3:50Speaker 4: And what he's been doing.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yes, but do you think he'd be doing this on
- 3:53Speaker 3: the Seahawks?
- 3:55Speaker 4: Probably not, because he'd be spinning snaps with Emmanuel Wilson
- 3:59Speaker 4: or George Helani or Jadarian Price at that point.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:03Speaker 4: And there's an injury history there, and I don't want
- 4:05Speaker 4: to jinx anybody with that, but there was some questions
- 4:08Speaker 4: about his durability. I don't think that his explosiveness and
- 4:12Speaker 4: his big play potential was ever in question, which had
- 4:16Speaker 4: a lot of Seahawks fans last year wondering why. why
- 4:19Speaker 4: there was this split between the two. It was just
- 4:21Speaker 4: a matter of, can you keep Kenneth Walker healthy throughout
- 4:24Speaker 4: the entire season? It ended up working out magnificently for them.
- 4:28Speaker 4: The Charbonnet injury happened at a time where you could
- 4:30Speaker 4: then solely rely on Walker, and he is the Super
- 4:33Speaker 4: Bowl MVP. But we're four weeks in here, and I
- 4:35Speaker 4: think John Schneider would tell you it was more about
- 4:38Speaker 4: paying a running back that amount of money with questions
- 4:40Speaker 4: about his durability.
- 4:42Speaker 1: That's why I'm so torn, because the Chiefs have won, what,
- 4:45Speaker 1: four Super Bowls without a guy like Kenneth Walker.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And now everyone's talking about him as the NFL MVP,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and I'm not saying they're wrong. But it's hard to
- 4:53Speaker 1: define a guy or call a guy an MVP when
- 4:55Speaker 1: the team that he left is still successful and still
- 4:58Speaker 1: playing at a very high level. I'm just I don't
- 5:01Speaker 1: know what to do with the player. And I'm wondering,
- 5:03Speaker 1: as a Seahawks fan, are you upset perhaps because maybe
- 5:07Speaker 1: they use Kenneth Walker the correct way?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Because the Chiefs are. I mean, they are.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And I understand the injury history. I get all of it.
- 5:14Speaker 1: But as a Seahawks fan, you have to be a
- 5:15Speaker 1: little bit perplexed. Hey, why didn't we use Kenneth Walker
- 5:19Speaker 1: the way Andy Reid is using Kenneth Walker?
- 5:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's natural. And I think that there
- 5:24Speaker 4: are fans that are wondering, why did that end up happening? Especially, too,
- 5:28Speaker 4: because they didn't run the ball great against Washington in
- 5:31Speaker 4: Week 3, which ends up kind of being their— it is
- 5:34Speaker 4: their lone blemish on the schedule. But again, the fact is, Stu—
- 5:40Speaker 4: Maybe Kenneth Walker ends up emerging the way that he
- 5:43Speaker 4: did because of all that was at stake for the Seahawks.
- 5:47Speaker 4: He made himself a lot of money during that playoff
- 5:50Speaker 4: run and in that Super Bowl. And I don't think
- 5:52Speaker 4: that when they parted ways, you knew he probably wasn't
- 5:55Speaker 4: going to come back. There were certain guys you knew
- 5:57Speaker 4: on the team last year that weren't going to come back.
- 5:59Speaker 4: But I'll just go back to the Taylor next thing.
- 6:01Speaker 4: They won the title. You've said this to Taylor many times.
- 6:03Speaker 4: No matter what they did, whether it was a right
- 6:05Speaker 4: or wrong decision, it was a decision that led them
- 6:07Speaker 4: to win the Super Bowl. And for that, I can't
- 6:09Speaker 4: be mad at.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Now it seems like he's determined to make Seattle eat
- 6:14Speaker 1: it and win a Super Bowl for Kansas City.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Dan.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Again, Emmanuel Wilson, who was the backup in Green Bay
- 6:23Speaker 4: to be the backup in Seattle, comes in. and has
- 6:26Speaker 4: a great game against the Chargers. Now, if Kenneth Walker
- 6:28Speaker 4: can make Sam Darnold not throw dumb interceptions, that's a
- 6:31Speaker 4: whole other story. That's a completely different situation. And maybe
- 6:35Speaker 4: it was Kenneth Walker's emergence that made Darnold not turn
- 6:38Speaker 4: the football over or throwing it directly to opponents for
- 6:41Speaker 4: the second straight week.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Maybe that was the reason why.
- 6:44Speaker 4: But, man, it's great to see what he's doing, but
- 6:48Speaker 4: I can't take back from what happened last year because they.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Won it all.
- 6:53Speaker 1: 877-99 on Fox. I'll get to your calls here. In
- 6:56Speaker 1: just a second, I don't know if you watched the
- 6:59Speaker 1: Raiders-Chiefs game yesterday, but the announcers were telling a story
- 7:04Speaker 1: of how Patrick Mahomes was sitting on one of those
- 7:07Speaker 1: injury tables.
- 7:08Speaker 3: He's being worked on.
- 7:09Speaker 1: He's being stretched out, and he's watching television, and he's
- 7:12Speaker 1: studying running backs, and there pops up Kenneth Walker on
- 7:17Speaker 1: his screen, and he calls all the coaches, and he
- 7:19Speaker 1: really popped out of the television for Patrick Mahomes.
- 7:24Speaker 3: He's like, wow, that guy's really talented.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I would love to have him as the Chiefs running back,
- 7:28Speaker 1: but there's no way Seattle is going to part with him.
- 7:31Speaker 1: He then picked up the phone, called the coaches, and said, hey,
- 7:34Speaker 1: if Kenneth Walker becomes available, go get that guy.
- 7:37Speaker 3: We need him.
- 7:38Speaker 1: He'll be great for us. So I am just wondering,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I do believe. that you wish harm upon Kenneth
- 7:44Speaker 1: Walker this year. But I am wondering when you hear Mahomes,
- 7:49Speaker 1: when you hear that story being told and Mahomes is
- 7:51Speaker 1: identifying just how talented this player is, doesn't.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It make you question John Schneider just a little bit?
- 7:58Speaker 3: Who's Patrick Mahomes? He hasn't won a Super Bowl in
- 8:00Speaker 3: two years.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Seriously, who does he think he is?
- 8:05Speaker 3: You're right. He's a guy who's about to get to re-kill.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's been at least over two years since they've
- 8:12Speaker 4: won a Super Bowl, so I don't know why Patrick
- 8:13Speaker 4: Mahomes thinks he can talk or he's this great big
- 8:17Speaker 4: scout now.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I don't understand.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Walker was off free agency. We have that little window
- 8:24Speaker 4: of free agency where it's not free agency, but it is.
- 8:28Speaker 5: It's underway.
- 8:29Speaker 4: And Kenneth Walker was in a Kansas City Chiefs uniform,
- 8:32Speaker 4: I feel like, five minutes after that. That timeline started
- 8:35Speaker 4: in that sort of, you.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Know, sprint sprinted there.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Like it was like a foregone conclusion that he was
- 8:40Speaker 4: going there.
- 8:41Speaker 3: It happened.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Happened pretty quick.
- 8:44Speaker 1: The Raiders and Chiefs. The Raiders, for me, had the
- 8:47Speaker 1: best loss of the weekend. No losses are good. But
- 8:50Speaker 1: if there's a good loss, that was it against the Chiefs.
- 8:52Speaker 1: They were in that game till the very end. And
- 8:54Speaker 1: if there was a bad win, it was the Green
- 8:56Speaker 1: Bay Packers.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You agree?
- 8:57Speaker 6: Gosh.
- 8:58Speaker 3: What a terrible win. He should be fired after that win, LeFleur.
- 9:03Speaker 4: It's not a hit piece because I think a lot
- 9:04Speaker 4: of it is true from Ty Dunn the day before
- 9:06Speaker 4: and how LeFleur and then people are all getting in
- 9:09Speaker 4: line to give their Matt LeFleur stories. Yeah. When you
- 9:13Speaker 4: almost lose to Jalen Daniels. in uh in his debut
- 9:18Speaker 4: and he turns the football over twice and you still
- 9:20Speaker 4: and green bay like green bay has got a little
- 9:22Speaker 4: something with jordan love and christian watson and matthew golden
- 9:25Speaker 4: like that trio could be very good in in a
- 9:28Speaker 4: few years you just need to keep jordan love upright
- 9:32Speaker 4: and you need to get matt lafleur out of town
- 9:34Speaker 4: yeah just an absolutely awful win it really it was
- 9:37Speaker 4: before and now the packers and the bears come into town.
- 9:40Speaker 1: The Vikings are the worst 4-0 team in NFL history.
- 9:42Speaker 1: The Broncos are the best 2-2 team in NFL history.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And that concludes my NFL discussion for today. Let's take
- 9:53Speaker 3: a quick call here. He's always there. Let's go to
- 9:56Speaker 3: Al in Albuquerque. He wants to talk about the worst
- 9:58Speaker 3: 4-0 team in NFL history. Go ahead, Al.
- 10:02Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right, Stu Goss. 22nd time, long time here. And,
- 10:05Speaker 7: you know, the Vikings are one of those, as a
- 10:08Speaker 7: Jets fan, you could probably relate. They're one of the
- 10:10Speaker 7: few franchises in sports where you can name their top
- 10:13Speaker 7: five losses right off the top of your head, even
- 10:15Speaker 7: if you're not a Vikings fan. And that's if you ignore,
- 10:18Speaker 7: even if you ignore all four Super Bowl losses. So
- 10:21Speaker 7: that's what we're dealing with here. So I am qualified
- 10:24Speaker 7: to say this is the worst 4-0 the Vikings have
- 10:27Speaker 7: ever been in their history. But I don't like Kyler Murray.
- 10:31Speaker 7: We need to stop treating Kyler Murray like he's actually good.
- 10:34Speaker 3: He can run around.
- 10:36Speaker 7: He can be like a joystick highlight reel guy. That's fine.
- 10:39Speaker 7: But let me ask you this, Stu. If they redrafted
- 10:43Speaker 7: the 2024 draft, would JJ McCarthy even go in the
- 10:47Speaker 7: fifth round? That's the pick they got for him. Would
- 10:50Speaker 7: he be a fifth round pick in that draft? Because
- 10:52Speaker 7: I don't think he would. I think he is the
- 10:54Speaker 7: worst since Christian Ponder, the worst first overall pick any
- 10:58Speaker 7: team has had. Just the worst reach ever. Why am
- 11:01Speaker 7: I so mad the Vikings are 4-0?
- 11:03Speaker 4: How about TJ Hawkinson going down at the one just
- 11:15Speaker 4: to run out the clock only for the next day,
- 11:17Speaker 4: all of social media to put a Vikings highlight film.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And it's all field goals. Like, if you have the
- 11:23Speaker 4: touchdown and you win 22 to 10, you don't have
- 11:26Speaker 4: that sort of content. But because TJ Hawkinson was a
- 11:29Speaker 4: team player and made the smart play, it gave every
- 11:33Speaker 4: Vikings hater fodder to just put together a montage of
- 11:36Speaker 4: field goal after field goal yesterday against the Dolphins.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Thank you for the call, Al. Dan, I actually have
- 11:42Speaker 3: the 2024 draft pulled up on my computer here. Caleb
- 11:46Speaker 3: would still be number one.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Fair? Yes? Yes.
- 11:49Speaker 3: This is knowing what we know now.
- 11:51Speaker 1: OK, because Al asked a very interesting question.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Would J.J. McCarthy go anywhere in the first five rounds
- 11:58Speaker 3: knowing what we know now?
- 11:59Speaker 1: And I think the answer is no, he would not
- 12:01Speaker 1: knowing what we know now. But how about Jaden Daniels?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Would he still go number two or would Drake May,
- 12:06Speaker 1: who won three, would he go number two?
- 12:08Speaker 4: I think May would go number two because now you
- 12:11Speaker 4: have an injury history.
- 12:12Speaker 5: With Jaden Daniels.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yes. That you wouldn't have with Drake May. Actually, Dan,
- 12:17Speaker 3: knowing what we know now, I believe Bo Nix would
- 12:20Speaker 3: be the second pick in the 2024 draft. Don't be ridiculous, Stu.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Come on.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Well, how am I being ridiculous? Because Marvin Harrison Jr.,
- 12:28Speaker 1: I don't believe he'd be a first-round pick, knowing what
- 12:31Speaker 1: we know now.
- 12:31Speaker 7: No.
- 12:32Speaker 3: He went fourth in that draft.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Why, you feel like I'm being ridiculous by saying Bo
- 12:37Speaker 1: Nix would go ahead of both Jaden Daniels and Drake May?
- 12:40Speaker 3: If we knew what we knew today, I mean.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Yeah, the Broncos' offense right now is something. And that
- 12:48Speaker 4: doesn't mean it's good. They don't have a running game.
- 12:51Speaker 4: They paid all that money for Jalen Waddell, and he's
- 12:54Speaker 4: pretty much useless right now.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yeah, had a touchdown yesterday.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Well, yeah, they lost by 10.
- 12:59Speaker 4: They scored 14 points.
- 13:00Speaker 3: No, I know, but look at that schedule, though, for
- 13:02Speaker 3: the Broncos. The reason I'm saying they're the best 2-2
- 13:05Speaker 3: team ever, they lost at Kansas City. They got blown out.
- 13:09Speaker 3: They beat Jacksonville.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Many people consider Jacksonville to be the best team in
- 13:12Speaker 1: the NFL, perhaps.
- 13:14Speaker 3: They beat the Rams.
- 13:15Speaker 1: The Rams were the best team in the NFL headed
- 13:17Speaker 1: into the season, and they lost to the Niners on
- 13:19Speaker 1: the road by 10 points.
- 13:20Speaker 3: They're a good team, Dan. That's all I'm saying.
- 13:22Speaker 4: I think they're a good team, but there's a reason
- 13:24Speaker 4: why there's rumblings with Davis Webb and the play calling
- 13:27Speaker 4: and Sean Payton. I mean, The QB rating of Bo Nix,
- 13:34Speaker 4: excuse me, over these last four games, I almost called
- 13:36Speaker 4: him Drew Brees. It hasn't been stellar. So I still
- 13:41Speaker 4: think the jury's out with Bo Nix. I would rather
- 13:43Speaker 4: have Jayden Daniels than Bo Nix. I will say that.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, but he gets hurt a lot. I understand. Yeah,
- 13:50Speaker 3: I'd probably go. I'd probably. Well, I'd take Caleb one.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I would take Bo Nix two. I would go Jayden three.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And then Drake May. At four. Did you find it funny?
- 14:02Speaker 1: Drake May, who last week I called a clown playing
- 14:06Speaker 1: quarterback in a circus tent. He seemed to figure it out.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And now everyone in New England, they went from hating
- 14:14Speaker 1: Drake May. It's Rabel's fault. And if it wasn't Rabel's fault,
- 14:17Speaker 1: it was Diana Rossini's fault. And then and then. But
- 14:21Speaker 1: now they're back with Drake May and they love Rabel again.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I love sports fans.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I do. I love sports fans so much, except for
- 14:28Speaker 3: the ones. who live in the city of Philadelphia.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Godson Company
- 14:37Speaker 2: live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific on
- 14:41Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Our thanks to Frank Caliendo for joining us in that
- 14:48Speaker 3: last segment. That was delightful.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Mikey, I rarely see you perk up the way you
- 14:52Speaker 1: perked up when you heard, I think it was the
- 14:55Speaker 1: Nicolas Cage as Madden.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Was that it? You know what?
- 14:58Speaker 5: It's the only one that he's done that I've never heard.
- 15:00Speaker 5: Go see Frank live because I went. We enjoyed the
- 15:05Speaker 5: hell out of it. I took my wife and my
- 15:07Speaker 5: wife likes to go nowhere. She likes to do nothing.
- 15:11Speaker 5: And I was like, hey, Frank gave us these tickets.
- 15:14Speaker 5: I've got the let's just go. We went. We sat there,
- 15:18Speaker 5: and as we're leaving, she goes, that was so much fun.
- 15:21Speaker 5: We should do stuff like that more often. And I
- 15:23Speaker 5: wanted to rip my hair out. I mean, it's already
- 15:25Speaker 5: coming out, but I wanted to rip it out.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Yeah, so you had that conversation. I've never had that
- 15:29Speaker 3: conversation with my wife. How'd it go? We should do
- 15:33Speaker 3: more stuff like this. It's why I'm hesitant to take
- 15:36Speaker 3: her to the Palm Beach Improv on the 9th or
- 15:38Speaker 3: the 10th because she'll say that to me after. Hey,
- 15:41Speaker 3: that was better than I thought it was going to be.
- 15:43Speaker 3: We should do stuff like this more often.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Oh, of course. And the worst part is we haven't
- 15:48Speaker 5: done anything since.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And you haven't done anything.
- 15:51Speaker 5: So, I mean, it's really not that big a gamble.
- 15:54Speaker 5: It's in the moment. She was like, that was so funny. I,
- 15:58Speaker 5: I didn't think I was going to understand it because
- 16:00Speaker 5: you know him through all this sports stuff, but that's
- 16:03Speaker 5: not what it was. But when he broke out, it's
- 16:05Speaker 5: the only thing I had never heard him do was
- 16:07Speaker 5: Nicholas cage.
- 16:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:09Speaker 5: And it's, it's Frank Kelly. And it sounded just like him, um,
- 16:14Speaker 5: I think that movie is going to be awful.
- 16:18Speaker 3: The Madden movie you're talking about.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the Madden movie is going to be awful.
- 16:22Speaker 5: And I almost wish they would have just put a
- 16:24Speaker 5: suit on Frank and let him be Madden.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Because at least then I'd have been like, OK, I
- 16:28Speaker 3: can hear it.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Put it on the poll. Do you think the Madden
- 16:31Speaker 3: movie is going to be awful? Trey Wingo going to
- 16:35Speaker 3: join us in about eight minutes.
- 16:38Speaker 1: I agree with you. That's why I'm laughing. I don't
- 16:40Speaker 1: think it has a shot. Once you cast Nicolas Cage
- 16:44Speaker 1: as Madden. Now, he looks like Madden. I've seen trailers
- 16:47Speaker 1: for it, but it's Nick Cage and I can't take
- 16:49Speaker 1: him seriously. But I guess I couldn't take Madden that
- 16:51Speaker 1: seriously either, you know?
- 16:53Speaker 5: See, I love Nick Cage. It's just such a bad casting.
- 16:56Speaker 5: And the funny part is you got Christian Bale to
- 16:59Speaker 5: play Al Davis. And I'm like, that is an a
- 17:02Speaker 5: level elite actor. That is an Oscar winner in like
- 17:06Speaker 5: five times over. To play Al Davis. And he has
- 17:12Speaker 5: that aura. He falls into that character. Nicolas Cage won
- 17:16Speaker 5: an Oscar for playing a drunk. Yes. And now I'm
- 17:19Speaker 5: looking at John Madden and I just see Nicolas Cage.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yes. Frank's going to be at studio this Thursday. Looking
- 17:26Speaker 3: forward to that.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Was it odd? Tell me, Mikey, is this odd? Because
- 17:29Speaker 1: you went to it. You love the show. You and
- 17:31Speaker 1: your wife discussed about doing things like that more often.
- 17:34Speaker 1: You still haven't. But I asked Taylor if he wanted
- 17:37Speaker 1: to go to the show because it's not just like, hey,
- 17:39Speaker 1: you have to go buy a ticket and sit down
- 17:41Speaker 1: and watch the show.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Frank's going to do it VIP style.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Taylor's response, I think because he is nervous about his
- 17:47Speaker 1: Yankees and he's nervous about Carl.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Anthony Towns not getting a deal done before the season starts.
- 17:52Speaker 1: That Taylor declined my invitation to go see Caliendo.
- 17:55Speaker 3: How about that?
- 17:58Speaker 5: That's a mistake on Taylor's part. That's just like, that's
- 18:01Speaker 5: a swing and a miss on Taylor's part because it's
- 18:04Speaker 5: him and his girlfriend will very much enjoy the show. Yes.
- 18:07Speaker 5: And I don't mean to make this sound like a
- 18:08Speaker 5: Frank Caliendo commercial because it's not, but I can't recommend
- 18:12Speaker 5: going to see it enough. Right.
- 18:14Speaker 3: It's fantastic.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Taylor did declare the Rays game one, a must win
- 18:19Speaker 1: for the Rays because of Rasmussen.
- 18:20Speaker 3: He was great. Are you nervous? Mikey here headed into
- 18:24Speaker 3: game two Yankees raised at the trop tonight.
- 18:29Speaker 5: I am, and it's for all the reasons I was
- 18:31Speaker 5: nervous going into the series. Your response is, well, they
- 18:35Speaker 5: got Schlittler on the mound. They got Schlittler on the mound.
- 18:38Speaker 3: They're fine. Yes, I said that to you earlier. I did.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I said that earlier off air when you guys both
- 18:42Speaker 3: told me you were nervous. I'm like, you have your
- 18:44Speaker 3: ace on the hill tonight. What do you mean?
- 18:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 5: Well, Garrett Cole couldn't have pitched any better. He gave
- 18:50Speaker 5: up one, one run and they lost by one. Like
- 18:53Speaker 5: that is, that is the Yankees offense that Taylor and
- 18:57Speaker 5: I have been worried about going into this all, all,
- 19:02Speaker 5: all year towards the end of the year. And it's
- 19:05Speaker 5: so disheartening because their best moment was the double that
- 19:12Speaker 5: finally broke up the no-hitter by Austin Wells. Here's Austin
- 19:16Speaker 5: Wells that people were trying to get rid of, and
- 19:18Speaker 5: he was going to have this moment of sparking them.
- 19:22Speaker 5: You know what? Let's just listen to the WFA.
- 19:24Speaker 3: And call him.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Please.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Oh, please.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Swing on, hit hard.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Down the right field line.
- 19:28Speaker 6: That is a fair ball down in the corner. Wells
- 19:30Speaker 6: the first.
- 19:31Speaker 3: He's going to get the second easily.
- 19:33Speaker 5: He's taking three.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And here he comes.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Wells dives. Oh, goodness gracious.
- 19:38Speaker 3: He's out by three feet.
- 19:40Speaker 5: You hate to make that third out of third, don't you?
- 19:42Speaker 3: Man, man.
- 19:44Speaker 1: He blew off the stop sign and suddenly turned into
- 19:47Speaker 1: Ricky Henderson.
- 19:48Speaker 3: I mean, no.
- 19:50Speaker 5: There is a video online on Twitter on X. I
- 19:55Speaker 5: suggest everybody who cares a little bit about baseball and
- 19:58Speaker 5: Tim Kirchner to find it. It is the video of
- 20:01Speaker 5: ESPN radio's booth while they're calling that play. And Tim
- 20:06Speaker 5: Kirchner has his hands up. And then puts them on
- 20:09Speaker 5: his head like, oh, no, as soon as Wells turns
- 20:12Speaker 5: for third. Because he is just so dead to rights.
- 20:17Speaker 5: I mean, that is a catcher trying to leg out
- 20:20Speaker 5: a triple. in, in the eighth inning of a, of a,
- 20:25Speaker 5: of game one of the ALDS, a.
- 20:27Speaker 3: One, nothing game. Just stop it. Second, you get a
- 20:29Speaker 3: single and the game's tied.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Maybe when I tell you there is a breakdown online
- 20:36Speaker 5: of this play, Wells wasn't at second yet when the
- 20:40Speaker 5: right fielder got the ball. Yes. He wasn't even like
- 20:43Speaker 5: he had no business making that turn. And it just
- 20:49Speaker 5: it was it was so deflating because you were waiting
- 20:52Speaker 5: for one thing to get behind. You were waiting for
- 20:54Speaker 5: that one moment to start cheering, to be like, hey,
- 20:57Speaker 5: here we come. Here's our big moment. And he he
- 21:00Speaker 5: was he was out by 10 feet. He was out
- 21:02Speaker 5: by 10 feet.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Mikey, put it on the poll.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Is Austin Wells the slowest guy in Major League Baseball
- 21:08Speaker 1: history to try to turn a double? into a triple
- 21:12Speaker 1: um speaking of seeing things between first and second did
- 21:15Speaker 1: you see the third base coach the yankees third base
- 21:17Speaker 1: coach i don't know his name yeah he was holding
- 21:19Speaker 1: his hands up before he got the second.
- 21:25Speaker 3: What was he thinking? He wasn't.
- 21:30Speaker 5: No, he wasn't. I peeked behind the curtain. I spend
- 21:33Speaker 5: all my weekends usually trapped on a baseball field because
- 21:36Speaker 5: of my son. And I will tell you right now,
- 21:39Speaker 5: you ignore a sign like that, you're benched.
- 21:42Speaker 3: You're benched.
- 21:43Speaker 5: And those are 10 and 11-year-olds. You're benched.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Wait, so you're nervous, yet you do have Cam Schlittler
- 21:50Speaker 1: on the mound tonight. I mean, the rotation is set
- 21:52Speaker 1: up for the next two games, so you guys should
- 21:54Speaker 1: be fine.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I'm not scared of the raise offense against our pitching staff.
- 22:00Speaker 5: I am scared against the, the Yankees offense against themselves
- 22:05Speaker 5: because they, I mean, they, they, they cashed in whatever
- 22:10Speaker 5: baseball prayers they had to score 18 run against the
- 22:14Speaker 5: Red Sox. And, uh, I don't think they have anything left.
- 22:19Speaker 3: All right, we'll see.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I have more faith in the Yankees than you and
- 22:23Speaker 1: Taylor seem to have, which is odd considering I'm not
- 22:25Speaker 1: a Yankee fan.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Let's hear that call one more time, courtesy of WFAN.
- 22:30Speaker 1: This is the slowest man in Major League Baseball history
- 22:34Speaker 1: trying to turn a double into a triple.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Swing on, hit hard. Down the right field line.
- 22:38Speaker 6: That is a fair ball down in the corner. Wells
- 22:41Speaker 6: the first.
- 22:42Speaker 3: He's got to get the second easily.
- 22:44Speaker 6: He's taking three.
- 22:45Speaker 3: And here he comes.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Wells dies.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Oh, goodness gracious. He's out by three feet. He needs
- 22:50Speaker 3: to make that third out at third, don't you? Man, man.
- 22:54Speaker 3: One more time. I just want you to listen to
- 22:57Speaker 3: what the announcer says. He's thinking three. He's yelling at
- 23:02Speaker 3: Austin Wells. One more time. Yelling. Swing on hit hard
- 23:06Speaker 3: down the right field line.
- 23:07Speaker 6: That is a fair ball down in the corner. Wells
- 23:10Speaker 6: the first.
- 23:10Speaker 3: He's got to get the second easily.
- 23:12Speaker 6: He's thinking three.
- 23:14Speaker 3: And here he comes.
- 23:16Speaker 5: Oh, goodness gracious.
- 23:17Speaker 3: He's out by three feet. You hate to make that
- 23:20Speaker 3: bird out at third, don't you? Man, man. What a
- 23:23Speaker 3: great call. Trey Wingo. I'm sorry.
- 23:28Speaker 5: That is so awful. Why would you do that?
- 23:30Speaker 3: I did it twice. I'm tempted to do it a
- 23:33Speaker 3: third time.
- 23:34Speaker 5: You went for three.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And I'm slower than he is.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
- 23:41Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m.
- 23:44Speaker 5: Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Thanks to Bear and T-Bob for joining us. Talk some
- 23:50Speaker 1: college football. Big college football weekend coming up. Alabama and Georgia.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Here we are, Mikey.
- 23:54Speaker 3: It's still Alabama and Georgia.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Some things change. Some things don't. That's just not going
- 24:01Speaker 5: to change.
- 24:01Speaker 1: No, the entire sport has changed, and yet we're still
- 24:03Speaker 1: sitting here waiting for Georgia, who's undefeated, to take on Alabama,
- 24:09Speaker 1: who is also undefeated. So, Mikey, I can't believe we
- 24:12Speaker 1: have gone this far in the day. There is so
- 24:15Speaker 1: much stuff that happens on the weekends that we have
- 24:18Speaker 1: yet to talk about the Colorado State defensive coordinator who
- 24:21Speaker 1: just got play-calling duties taken.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Away from him by Mora Jr., I believe. Midway through
- 24:28Speaker 3: the first quarter, they proceeded to give.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Up more points when Mora was calling the plays than
- 24:34Speaker 1: they did when this guy was calling the plays. But
- 24:36Speaker 1: the D coordinator for Colorado State— and I know you have
- 24:39Speaker 1: a question for me here— But the D coordinator just said, hey,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know what?
- 24:43Speaker 3: I'm going to pack it up. My job is done here.
- 24:45Speaker 3: And he quit and left the game.
- 24:47Speaker 7: Amazing.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Can you imagine?
- 24:53Speaker 5: What it must be like for those players to walk
- 24:56Speaker 5: back off on the field, off the field to the
- 24:59Speaker 5: sideline and just be like, all right, coach, what are
- 25:02Speaker 5: we doing? What's what's the coach coach? Where is he?
- 25:08Speaker 5: He left.
- 25:09Speaker 7: What?
- 25:10Speaker 5: He, he left.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 5: Does he know we play four quarters?
- 25:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Yes.
- 25:16Speaker 7: Yes.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Have you ever thought about leaving in the middle of a,
- 25:20Speaker 5: Middle of a job?
- 25:21Speaker 3: No, you have no idea. Every damn day. just when
- 25:28Speaker 3: he was pounding on me and pounding and pounding and
- 25:32Speaker 3: calling me dumb and calling me stupid. But you know what?
- 25:35Speaker 3: I stayed there. And you know what I did? I
- 25:37Speaker 3: did my job.
- 25:39Speaker 1: And shame, shame on the Colorado State defensive coordinator for
- 25:44Speaker 1: packing it up and giving up on the kids before
- 25:48Speaker 1: that game was over. Granted, if you're a kid on
- 25:50Speaker 1: that team playing defense, you go back, he's no longer there.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Perhaps you're happy.
- 25:55Speaker 7: Perhaps.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Because whatever he was calling wasn't working.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Perhaps.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Perhaps you're happy. But to answer your question, yes, I
- 26:01Speaker 3: have thought about it.
- 26:02Speaker 5: He can't get a job ever again. He's got his
- 26:05Speaker 5: career changed now, right? Like he, he went from, I
- 26:09Speaker 5: am a defensive coordinator at a D one school to
- 26:13Speaker 5: now I am a greeter at Walmart.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Uh yes that guy if he applies for any sort
- 26:18Speaker 1: of job uh i would imagine coaching job uh i
- 26:21Speaker 1: would imagine he will not.
- 26:22Speaker 5: Get it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: He is forever known as the guy who quit on
- 26:25Speaker 1: his team in the second quarter of a football game
- 26:28Speaker 1: yes he walked off.
- 26:28Speaker 5: The field yes and tell me again uh how did
- 26:32Speaker 5: you end it with your last job can we call
- 26:35Speaker 5: them for reference yeah don't do that.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I mean, don't do that.
- 26:38Speaker 1: But how about Maura stripping him of play calling responsibilities
- 26:42Speaker 1: and then going on? And then I think he started
- 26:44Speaker 1: to call the plays and they gave up more points
- 26:46Speaker 1: after the guy left.
- 26:47Speaker 3: How about that? Yeah, he made his point.
- 26:49Speaker 5: There's a there is a there is a moment that
- 26:52Speaker 5: was caught where Maura was screaming into the microphone, into
- 26:55Speaker 5: the headset. How do we let that happen two weeks
- 26:58Speaker 5: in a row?
- 26:59Speaker 7: Yes.
- 26:59Speaker 5: And my guess is, I'll be honest with you, Pete,
- 27:02Speaker 5: but I have no idea what happened. I have no
- 27:05Speaker 5: idea what led to it. I just know that man left. Yes.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Middle of the game. Yes.
- 27:11Speaker 3: One might say, Jim said, no mora. What a bad joke. Oh, wow.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Thank you. Got the rim shot.
- 27:19Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Needed it.
- 27:22Speaker 3: No more. Yes, it did. It helps everything.
- 27:25Speaker 1: What was your question for me, Mikey, on the way
- 27:26Speaker 1: out here? Again, our thanks to Trey Wingo. Thanks to
- 27:29Speaker 1: Frank Caliendo. Thanks to T-Bob at Bear for joining us.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Check out all the podcasts, College Football, Woodstugats and Bear,
- 27:36Speaker 1: God Bless Football, and of course, Stugats and Company, the
- 27:38Speaker 1: show before the show.
- 27:39Speaker 3: What do you have for me?
- 27:41Speaker 5: Uh, if you go and you listen to Stu Gotsen,
- 27:43Speaker 5: I was, I was on fire this morning about Aaron Glenn.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I was, I gave a Don LaGreca style. I am,
- 27:51Speaker 5: I am done with Aaron Glenn. I, you can't convince
- 27:54Speaker 5: me anything otherwise. Um, and I'm looking at this Jets. Yeah.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I was going to say you want no Mora. I mean,
- 28:00Speaker 3: rim shot.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Thank you. No, that's the one you just leave there, guys.
- 28:07Speaker 5: Come on. I'm looking at this Jets roster. I'm like,
- 28:12Speaker 5: it's not a bad roster. It's a mediocre roster, right?
- 28:17Speaker 5: It's a mediocre roster.
- 28:18Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 28:19Speaker 6: Yes.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Okay. And I'm looking at them in their one and three.
- 28:23Speaker 5: And then I go and I look. And somebody posted
- 28:26Speaker 5: a picture. The Giants are at the top of the
- 28:31Speaker 5: NFC East right now at 3-1.
- 28:33Speaker 7: 3-1.
- 28:33Speaker 5: And you look at the Giants roster and you go,
- 28:35Speaker 5: that's not a good roster. That's not a bad roster.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:38Speaker 5: That's a mediocre roster. Coach.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 5: That's the whole difference, right? That's the difference between the
- 28:44Speaker 5: Jets and the Giants right now, right?
- 28:46Speaker 3: John Harbaugh, yes.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I would just argue competent coach. Competent coach is the difference. Now,
- 28:52Speaker 5: I will say John Harbaugh is beyond competent. He's above that.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Yes.
- 28:58Speaker 5: But Aaron Glenn, and I'm just sick of hearing fans say, well,
- 29:04Speaker 5: what about, they don't have a quarterback. They don't have
- 29:06Speaker 5: a quarterback. First off, Geno Smith hasn't been that bad.
- 29:09Speaker 5: But my response to them is we just got outplayed
- 29:12Speaker 5: by Tyson Bajan. We just, I mean, the kid in Washington,
- 29:18Speaker 5: in London- Had them gave them a shot.
- 29:22Speaker 3: The kid whose name we can't pronounce that kid. Yes.
- 29:25Speaker 5: The guy I could say so many Greek words that
- 29:28Speaker 5: sound just like it.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:29Speaker 5: But he over everybody's head.
- 29:30Speaker 3: He gave him a shot to win that game. Yes.
- 29:32Speaker 1: As awful as he was to start, he gave him
- 29:34Speaker 1: a shot to win that game. The other big difference,
- 29:36Speaker 1: I would tell you, Mikey, with the Giants and the
- 29:38Speaker 1: Jets is the Giants schedule. especially the last two weeks
- 29:41Speaker 1: if Jackson Dart's going to be down you're playing with
- 29:43Speaker 1: Jameis Winston do it against Tennessee and Arizona you know
- 29:46Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 29:48Speaker 5: And I would just say if you're going to play
- 29:50Speaker 5: against the Chicago Bears you'd want to play against Tyson
- 29:52Speaker 5: Bajan That's yes. You're right. You want to go play
- 29:58Speaker 5: a defense in Detroit that's giving up 32 points a game. Yes.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Does any coach in the NFL love winning with his
- 30:05Speaker 3: backup more than John Harbaugh?
- 30:09Speaker 1: Like you understand what I'm saying? Being three in one
- 30:13Speaker 1: with Jameis Winston, who has not played that great. When
- 30:16Speaker 1: you came there, because Jackson Dart was the quarterback, and
- 30:19Speaker 1: he goes down week one, and then you have to
- 30:23Speaker 1: go to Jameis Winston, and it starts off slow, and
- 30:26Speaker 1: he's not very good against the Rams. He's terrible, but
- 30:28Speaker 1: then you win the next two. All it's doing for
- 30:31Speaker 1: John Harbaugh, winning without Jackson Dart and winning with Jameis Winston,
- 30:34Speaker 1: is validating the Giants signing him to be their head coach,
- 30:38Speaker 1: because that's what a great head coach, something we are
- 30:41Speaker 1: not familiar with, that's what a great head coach could
- 30:44Speaker 1: do for your football team.
- 30:46Speaker 5: It sends a signal up to the entire league. Hey,
- 30:49Speaker 5: come play here because we're going to have a shot.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yes.
- 30:52Speaker 5: Doesn't matter. We're going to have a shot.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Yes. Even if Jameis Winston's our quarterback, we're going to
- 30:56Speaker 3: have a shot.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:00Speaker 3: I don't think it's very long before we see J.J. McCarthy.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I just don't. There's a reason they made that trade, Mikey.
- 31:06Speaker 3: There's a reason.
