- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 28 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:34I Hate Talking: So what are we talking about today?
- 0:37I Hate Talking: I don't have no idea.
- 0:40I Hate Talking: I don't have any idea either.
- 0:41I Hate Talking: Today's word or phrase of the episode is the word Spartan.
- 0:47I Hate Talking: Nice, like the movie or like the competition?
- 0:52I Hate Talking: So it is a movie, uh, it is a competition, obstacle course racing, uh, it also can be just related to Sparta in ancient Greece, so of relating to that particular region.
- 1:11I Hate Talking: It can also mean as an adjective, showing the indifference to comfort or luxury traditionally associated with ancient Sparta.
- 1:21I Hate Talking: So you're not going to Necessarily be fulfilling your life's desires or pleasures, but you are going to be in some form or fashion indifferent to receiving comfort and uh probably has some relationship to stoicism and things of that nature.
- 1:39I Hate Talking: Uh, so those are some things that may come to mind when you hear the word Spartan.
- 1:44I Hate Talking: Awesome.
- 1:44I Hate Talking: I didn't realize that about the meaning of being indifferent to luxuries.
- 1:49I Hate Talking: What was it again?
- 1:50I Hate Talking: What did it say?
- 1:51I Hate Talking: Showing the indifference to comfort or luxury.
- 1:55I Hate Talking: So, can you actually use that in sentences then?
- 1:58I Hate Talking: Because like, I am not.
- 2:00I Hate Talking: A Spartan, cause I do like luxury and comfort.
- 2:05I Hate Talking: I am not indifferent to it.
- 2:07I Hate Talking: Right, and I think that's the key is that it's not that like stoicism or maybe uh some other things where you are actually rejecting comfort.
- 2:18I Hate Talking: Spartan is just simply indifferent to comfort or luxury.
- 2:22I Hate Talking: So if you have comfort or luxury, that's OK, but that if you don't have comfort or luxury, that's OK too.
- 2:29I Hate Talking: Uh, so let's see if we can find an example in a sentence or if I can think of something.
- 2:35I Hate Talking: In a way to use it in a sentence in terms of that uh particular definition.
- 2:40I Hate Talking: Yeah, because when I heard it in phrases like on TV, the phrase like I am Spartan comes to mind.
- 2:47I Hate Talking: And maybe I'm mistaken in that origin of it, but when I think of that, I think of like victorious, like strong and like, no one's gonna stop me.
- 2:56I Hate Talking: But that would be very different from that, meaning you were just read.
- 3:00I Hate Talking: Yeah, and that also is part of the definition that is available here on the dictionary.com.
- 3:10I Hate Talking: Uh, the previous dictionary definition that I was reading was the Oxford Dictionary that we've been referencing a lot in previous episodes, but according to dictionary.com, which I don't really trust dictionary.com all that much, but it does at least, uh, give some definitions of words that are in the modern lexicon.
- 3:30I Hate Talking: In perhaps ways people use them, um, maybe not as precisely as the Oxford Dictionary would have them, uh, but it does say.
- 3:38I Hate Talking: I'm getting an ad on dictionary.com, so there you go, pay the bills.
- 3:44I Hate Talking: Uh, it says that it's suggestive of the ancient Spartans sternly disciplined.
- 3:48I Hate Talking: Rigorously simple, frugal or austere, brave, undaunted, so some of that, uh, type of connotation with victorious that you're describing.
- 3:57I Hate Talking: So, moving on to the Cambridge dictionary, it does have a definition uh that is simple.
- 4:07I Hate Talking: And severe with no comfort.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: Uh, they do use it in an example sentence that says, quote, they lead a Spartan life with very few comforts and no luxuries.
- 4:20I Hate Talking: Mm, OK.
- 4:21I Hate Talking: So the reason that we're talking about Spartan is because many of us in our family have just taken part in a Spartan race, uh, which is that obstacle course racing series, uh, that was, uh, created, uh, I guess probably a few decades ago at this point, um, where there are obstacles and off-road racing, uh, that you're doing.
- 4:50I Hate Talking: On foot, uh, so sort of that type of running race known as a Spartan race.
- 4:57I Hate Talking: Yeah, it was really fun.
- 4:59I Hate Talking: I was the cheerleader and making sure that everybody was in their spots because we had multiple different times.
- 5:06I Hate Talking: Um, of starting times.
- 5:10I Hate Talking: So, um, I was just hanging back with everyone in our family that wasn't, but it was so fun watching y'all, the kids and I got to watch you do quite a few of the really difficult challenges, and that was great.
- 5:23I Hate Talking: I had a friend, uh, asked me about it afterwards, and I was telling her about it, how many miles you ran and obstacles, and because at first she's like, this is really fun.
- 5:33I Hate Talking: I should do this with you next year.
- 5:34I Hate Talking: And I told her about it and she's like, oh, actually, never mind, because it is intense.
- 5:39I Hate Talking: It is not a um luxury and it's not easy at all.
- 5:44I Hate Talking: So I'm really proud of you for doing it.
- 5:46I Hate Talking: Indeed, and it has, uh, changed over the last few years that I've done them.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: There have been some years that it was easier or harder.
- 5:55I Hate Talking: Uh, this particular year, it actually was on the harder side, a more difficult side for whatever reason, and I did not really expect it to be harder because it was a dry course.
- 6:07I Hate Talking: Uh, so, you know, these races are typically held rain or shine, obviously, if there's any super severe weather, uh, lightning or tornadoes or.
- 6:16I Hate Talking: Uh, whatnot, they will, uh, suspend racing, uh, but if it's just raining or if the course is wet, uh, that will proceed as planned.
- 6:25I Hate Talking: Uh, so typically when it's a dry course, you'll have a faster time, uh, but that was, uh, still quite challenging, and that was the outlook from many of the people that I saw on social media afterwards and that I heard, uh, talking about it at the actual venue that it was quite a difficult, uh, course this year.
- 6:45I Hate Talking: Yeah, I'm not trying to exaggerate.
- 6:47I Hate Talking: Today is 20 degrees cooler than it was on that day, just a couple days ago.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: So, it was excessively hot.
- 6:57I Hate Talking: And so I felt like that was what I was constantly doing was having everyone drink water and stuff cause it was so hot and it was just draining everyone, I feel like.
- 7:06I Hate Talking: Yes, it certainly was hot and it was actually a spike in temperature too.
- 7:12I Hate Talking: So not only is it cooler today, but it was also cooler leading up to this particular event.
- 7:17I Hate Talking: So perhaps, uh, people were used to the cooler weather, including myself, and this particular hot day made it especially challenging.
- 7:26I Hate Talking: One of them we were talking about the obstacles.
- 7:30I Hate Talking: So you had your race first, and then a group of our children had their race, and then the next group had theirs.
- 7:38I Hate Talking: The kids are based on age groups.
- 7:40I Hate Talking: Obviously, the older kids would have more mileage to run and more obstacles to do, and then the younger kids have less.
- 7:48I Hate Talking: When we were waiting for their races to start, we kind of found a shaded spot, which was super helpful because it was so hot.
- 7:55I Hate Talking: And the kids were drawing and drinking water, and it was a perfect spot because we got to watch you go underneath the barbed wire.
- 8:05I Hate Talking: And so that was really exciting to cheer you on.
- 8:08I Hate Talking: And then the spot we had right beside it, that was a little bit later on in obstacles, but you kind of loop around and go back.
- 8:17I Hate Talking: So we got to see this next obstacle too.
- 8:19I Hate Talking: And I was terrified watching you.
- 8:21I Hate Talking: It's called the slick wall.
- 8:23I Hate Talking: And it's, you want to explain what it is?
- 8:26I Hate Talking: Yep, so the slip wall actually is the actual name of the particular obstacle in this case, but yes, it's, uh, typically it's immediately after some sort of water obstacle.
- 8:40I Hate Talking: I don't think I've ever seen it where it's not been after a water obstacle, uh, since that's sort of the point on how it is made to be slippery.
- 8:48I Hate Talking: AKA the slip wall.
- 8:50I Hate Talking: Uh, so it's immediately after rolling mud and dunk wall.
- 8:53I Hate Talking: So where you're actually submerging yourself underwater to go underneath the wall.
- 8:58I Hate Talking: Uh, so you're completely soaking wet and then you have to climb this 45, I think maybe even a little bit steeper, maybe 50 or 55 degree angle metal wall using a rope and pulling yourself up, uh, this wall that's probably I'd say probably 20 ft tall from ground to the, the angled tip of the particular obstacle.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: Yeah, first, we got to see you, like I said, when you right when you were about to do that.
- 9:28I Hate Talking: So you called to us, we came over to the side and cheered you on, and I went to kiss you, and then I was like, oh wait, you're really gross looking because you just were, yeah, you just came out of the water and we're just mud and so I just gave you a high five.
- 9:43I Hate Talking: Sorry about that.
- 9:44I Hate Talking: Yep, and I just did some offline research, I guess it is the Adrenaline of the race, it's nowhere near 20 ft tall.
- 9:51I Hate Talking: It's actually only 8 ft tall, but it seems a lot bigger when you're right there doing it.
- 9:56I Hate Talking: Right.
- 9:57I Hate Talking: Well, yes, and in your defense, what I was saying earlier that I was terrified watching you do it with our kids standing there cheering you on.
- 10:06I Hate Talking: They were so proud and I'm glad we got to watch you do it.
- 10:10I Hate Talking: The entire time I was praying though, because while we were there earlier, waiting for you to come around.
- 10:16I Hate Talking: We saw lots of people, quite a few people fall, and it wasn't like easy falls.
- 10:22I Hate Talking: I mean, it wasn't like medics were needed, but they were hitting their heads.
- 10:27I Hate Talking: They were really getting the wind knocked out of them.
- 10:30I Hate Talking: So I was just praying that you'd be safe and that our kids would not see you get majorly injured.
- 10:36I Hate Talking: Indeed, and this just goes to show you that you can't believe everything you hear on a podcast, nor except the very first AI overview result on Google, cause I actually did a little bit more research and according to the official Spartan race subreddit, It is 15 ft tall at the from the tip to the ground.
- 10:59I Hate Talking: OK, so what, 21, 8, now we're at 15.
- 11:03I Hate Talking: 15, we're going with 15 as the final number.
- 11:06I Hate Talking: OK.
- 11:07I Hate Talking: No more research on it.
- 11:08I Hate Talking: Take our word for it, 15 ft.
- 11:10I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 11:10I Hate Talking: And then I guess you were also quite surprised at how quickly I arrived from the barbed wire crawl to the lip and finish line.
- 11:21I Hate Talking: Right, yeah.
- 11:21I Hate Talking: So like I said, where we were stationed, how it was set up every year, it's different.
- 11:26I Hate Talking: Every race is different, I guess.
- 11:28I Hate Talking: But this year, how they had it set up, we watched you and we knew you'd loop around and come back.
- 11:35I Hate Talking: And that was like the second to last obstacle before the finish line.
- 11:39I Hate Talking: Seeing how much longer you had, I expected not to see you for another half hour or so.
- 11:44I Hate Talking: And that's why I said, I'm glad you called to us because we would have missed you.
- 11:48I Hate Talking: I was not watching.
- 11:49I Hate Talking: And so I was really like, wow, that's amazing.
- 11:52I Hate Talking: Like, he made crazy time.
- 11:53I Hate Talking: How in the world did you run that many miles in like 15 minutes?
- 11:58I Hate Talking: So I had to, I was encouraging, like, praising you, like, wow, that's amazing.
- 12:02I Hate Talking: And then you'd let me know what happened.
- 12:04I Hate Talking: Yep, so this was actually my 13th Spartan race that I've done, uh, my very first one being back in 2016 and have done a number over, obviously the past uh few years, uh, and some years doing two or three, and this was my very first DNF did not finish.
- 12:28I Hate Talking: Hm.
- 12:28I Hate Talking: And that is because I went from the barbed wire crawl immediately to the spear throw and cut off the dog leg that did contain some additional distance and some additional obstacles.
- 12:39I Hate Talking: And the reason for that was so that I could make it to the start of the kids race.
- 12:45I Hate Talking: Decided to accept that loss and, uh, have my very first DNF out of my.
- 12:52I Hate Talking: 13 races, so 12 out of 13 completed.
- 12:56I Hate Talking: And uh this was the very first one that I did not finish, but I think, uh, had good reason to do so.
- 13:04I Hate Talking: Yeah, I'm so thankful for that and so proud of you, because you could have done it.
- 13:10I Hate Talking: The reason you didn't finish also was we knew that it was cutting it close on how long it would take you usually to complete a race.
- 13:19I Hate Talking: But it was the only time slots for you to sign up and the kids.
- 13:25I Hate Talking: So we knew it'd be cutting it close.
- 13:27I Hate Talking: And then there was a whole bunch of just obstacles, or I don't know if it's a pun or not, but like, things that made it difficult, like the parking lot took over an hour to get into, which is not normal.
- 13:40I Hate Talking: Then you had a really long wait to get into the facility.
- 13:44I Hate Talking: So you started late because um of the setup of I guess the influx of people, right?
- 13:50I Hate Talking: Everyone showing up at the same time.
- 13:52I Hate Talking: Yeah, exactly.
- 13:53I Hate Talking: To your point, that does not usually happen, but this was a actually very busy event, so I'm not sure if they were doing, uh, extra advertising or whatever the case may be that, uh, resulted in so many people signing up.
- 14:06I Hate Talking: Uh, that also was harder to get a earlier time slot, as you mentioned, so I was starting later than normal in order to have enough time to finish my race and have some, uh, buffer time before the kids race.
- 14:19I Hate Talking: And then on top of that, yes, all the, uh, traffic and registration as well as just uh flow of traffic on the racecourse itself.
- 14:27I Hate Talking: Uh, typically that is not an issue, but for whatever reason there is just a, a lot of people there and I think, uh, just became exacerbated by the fact that people are running late and then there were different wave sizes and I just messed up the flow from there, uh, that, uh, caused a lot of those delays as well.
- 14:44I Hate Talking: Right, so you ended up having to start late.
- 14:46I Hate Talking: Yeah, you would not have had time to finish the race before our older kids, but they loved racing with you.
- 14:54I Hate Talking: Like, I think it's a bummer you did not get the medal.
- 14:57I Hate Talking: So I understand that's kind of a disappointment and sadness for you possibly, but the kids knew you showed up.
- 15:05I Hate Talking: And more importantly than getting your 13th medal is showing that the kids matter and having those memories, they're going to remember forever that their dad raised with them.
- 15:17I Hate Talking: That is true and uh.
- 15:20I Hate Talking: To be fair, I don't think I do it explicitly for the meal or the accomplishment of necessarily finishing an entire course, but just for the experience itself and overcoming some of these obstacles and having a challenge that, uh, in some form or fashion keeps me relatively fit, uh, so that I can be in spartan shape at all times, uh, and be prepared for overcoming these type of physical.
- 15:49I Hate Talking: Challenges and uh things of that nature.
- 15:53I Hate Talking: So is it fun for you or is it?
- 15:56I Hate Talking: To say you can do it.
- 15:59I Hate Talking: It's to make sure that I stay in such a shape that I can do it.
- 16:05I Hate Talking: So not necessarily.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: The knowledge that I can do it, but the actual ability that I can do it.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: As well as to some degree, yes, the accomplishment of it and, uh, there's actually quite a bit of camaraderie within the Spartan community as well.
- 16:22I Hate Talking: So it's not just purely competitive in nature where racers are racing against each other, but within the open heats, especially.
- 16:31I Hate Talking: There's a lot of camaraderie in terms of people helping one another, so it is have a sense of community as well.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: It is really cool to watch people helping each other up to do obstacles or cheering each other on, and I do love that, that it's, they're not looking at you guys each other as competitors, but everyone is wanting each other to finish and do well.
- 16:54I Hate Talking: Exactly.
- 16:56I Hate Talking: And I also was a bit unprepared for this particular race because just the previous year they had removed all burpees as penalties.
- 17:09I Hate Talking: So, uh, in the olden days and from, uh, when I started racing in 2016, the penalty for a failed obstacle was 30 burpees.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: So.
- 17:23I Hate Talking: If you were unable to complete whatever the particular obstacle was, uh, monkey bars or a rope climb or things of that nature, then you were required to do 30 burpees.
- 17:37I Hate Talking: And last year, and they started phasing this out a little bit over the last few years.
- 17:43I Hate Talking: Uh, but last year was the very first race that they had 0 burpees.
- 17:47I Hate Talking: So essentially what would happen is that if you failed an obstacle, you would be required to run a small penalty loop.
- 17:55I Hate Talking: So it was not necessarily a lot of extra physical exertion.
- 17:59I Hate Talking: It was just more running, and that is what I expected to encounter this year as well.
- 18:05I Hate Talking: So I knew that there were going to be obstacles that I would most likely fail just because Of, uh, just not being able to do some of those things and I was prepared to run the penalty loop, but they actually have brought back burpees this year.
- 18:19I Hate Talking: Oh no, really?
- 18:20I Hate Talking: I didn't even know that.
- 18:21I Hate Talking: And I'm actually very happy about that fact.
- 18:25I Hate Talking: Um, I think that the penalty loops were perhaps a bit more measurable and consistent in terms of it being like a competitive sport, um, but again, that's not necessarily the reason that I'm doing it.
- 18:40I Hate Talking: Uh, so actually having the burpees, uh, added some additional things to consider and try to attempt the obstacles a bit more with intent to actually achieve doing the obstacle and, uh, rather than doing those burpees.
- 18:54I Hate Talking: -- So I'm very happy that the burpees are back -- actually.
- 18:57I Hate Talking: Awesome.
- 18:58I Hate Talking: So it is 30 burpees.
- 19:00I Hate Talking: Is that the same?
- 19:01I Hate Talking: 30 burpees is the requirement.
- 19:04I Hate Talking: I think they did have a few obstacles.
- 19:08I Hate Talking: I think these are typically the ones that are most often failed, uh, that did have penalty loops, so it was a mix of penalty loops and burpees this year.
- 19:17I Hate Talking: However, they actually had burpee zones, uh, at all the obstacles.
- 19:22I Hate Talking: So in the event that you could not complete the obstacle for some of them they did have the penalty loop, but you still had the option to do burpees if you wanted to.
- 19:30I Hate Talking: So that was interesting as well.
- 19:31I Hate Talking: OK, that's cool.
- 19:33I Hate Talking: And then a really cool thing, um.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: This year for the first time was our older boys.
- 19:41I Hate Talking: We're able to help our younger boys, and that was really fun.
- 19:46I Hate Talking: I mean, they ended up.
- 19:47I Hate Talking: Doing theirs and then the little boys also.
- 19:51I Hate Talking: That just was so sweet to watch them, help them through the mud or help them um with the spear throw and things like that.
- 19:59I Hate Talking: It was really cool cause I know that they meant, it meant so much to them that you ran with them and you did run with all of them.
- 20:06I Hate Talking: So, you ran your race, most of it.
- 20:10I Hate Talking: And then you ran the big boys, and then you ran the little boys as well.
- 20:18I Hate Talking: Exactly.
- 20:19I Hate Talking: And at least two of the races there were shoe failures, so I don't even know if you knew all these stories, but for you, for me and for the little kids as well.
- 20:31I Hate Talking: So the on the uh little kids race they had their version of Rolling mud where they'll go through.
- 20:38I Hate Talking: Uh, some muddy water or just some mud in general, uh, as they're going up and down some embankments and the two little ones lost both of their shoes in that first round of rolling mud, uh, because the, uh, the mud got sticky and they sank down into the mud and, uh.
- 21:00I Hate Talking: Withdrew their feet from the mud without their shoes on.
- 21:03I Hate Talking: -- Oh -- no.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: So did you have to go dig out their shoes?
- 21:06I Hate Talking: So I did.
- 21:07I Hate Talking: So to your point, the older boys did help them, uh, and they kept going without their shoes.
- 21:13I Hate Talking: -- Oh -- no, they ran without shoes.
- 21:15I Hate Talking: Well, I climbed down into the mud pit and retrieved their shoes.
- 21:19I Hate Talking: And it actually was quite sticky and, uh, I almost lost a shoe as well and actually found it easier to take my foot out of my shoe and then dig my shoe out.
- 21:30I Hate Talking: So that, uh, happened and was able to retrieve all the shoes and, uh, get the kids to put their shoes back on, but they had already advanced a little way up the course.
- 21:41I Hate Talking: So, um, that, uh, was taken care of, but, uh, they were able to, to finish the course with all their shoes intact.
- 21:50I Hate Talking: And then my shoe problem was interesting.
- 21:53I Hate Talking: Probably about halfway through, I felt a rock rubbing against, uh, the left side of my heel and, uh, kept going for a little bit, but decided at some point that this was going to become a problem and would have to take care of this and get the rock out.
- 22:07I Hate Talking: So I removed my shoe, figured that I would just grab the rock out of the shoe and throw it away and then put my shoe back on and move on with the course.
- 22:17I Hate Talking: But what I actually found when I took my shoe off, the rock had been in between the outer wall of the shoe and the lining.
- 22:25I Hate Talking: Hmm.
- 22:25I Hate Talking: Oh no, I know what you mean because you can't get it out easily, right?
- 22:30I Hate Talking: No, it was very difficult to get out.
- 22:31I Hate Talking: So I figured that it was maybe had gotten in there from like maybe where some stitching had gotten.
- 22:37I Hate Talking: Loose or whatever the case may be.
- 22:39I Hate Talking: So I did reach in and was able to actually work around some of the lining, and the rock was even inside the lining of the lining.
- 22:47I Hate Talking: So I have no idea how it got there.
- 22:49I Hate Talking: Uh, it probably was from a previous race, uh, because these have been the shoes that I've worn for the last few races, and what I had to do is actually rip the stitching and the insulation and, uh, to remove this rock.
- 23:03I Hate Talking: Should have probably held onto the rock cause it probably was maybe even from a different state that I had done a course perhaps, uh, but I just, uh, tossed it to the side and I resumed racing.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: Are your shoes OK?
- 23:16I Hate Talking: Do you have to get new racing shoes now?
- 23:19I Hate Talking: They are probably on their last legs, uh, probably have maybe another race in them, but, uh, that would probably be about it, I think.
- 23:28I Hate Talking: So also watching a bunch of different competitors.
- 23:33I Hate Talking: It's really cool, like we're talking about the comaderie and all, um, a lot of people like sometimes you'll see like people in Uniforms or costumes.
- 23:44I Hate Talking: Do you ever see people run shoeless?
- 23:47I Hate Talking: I feel like that would be really challenging, but a good Obstacle to do.
- 23:51I Hate Talking: Uh, I have seen people run shoeless because they have lost their shoes in the mud.
- 23:57I Hate Talking: Those have been in some of the Rainier courses where it actually is muddy and they might have lost a shoe along the way somewhere.
- 24:03I Hate Talking: So I have seen that that was, uh, they were running shoeless, not by choice, but just out of necessity.
- 24:09I Hate Talking: I have seen people wear like those socks or whatever that are like the barefoot socks that still give some protection to your feet but are.
- 24:18I Hate Talking: Um, not quite the, the same as a full shoe.
- 24:22I Hate Talking: And I do not believe I've seen anybody run like barefoot, barefoot, um, as a particular thing, uh, that they did by choice.
- 24:31I Hate Talking: OK.
- 24:33I Hate Talking: Man, I hate shoes.
- 24:35I Hate Talking: I would probably rather run barefoot.
- 24:38I Hate Talking: Another cool thing that I didn't see this year, did you see the team that helps the individual in the wheelchair?
- 24:44I Hate Talking: Did not see that this year.
- 24:46I Hate Talking: Um, it is possible that they were racing on the other day of the weekend.
- 24:51I Hate Talking: Um, there's also a lot of different teams based in Uh, the area that we were visiting, uh, that were affected by Hurricane Helene, so that may have also played a part in, uh, some of these particular teams' abilities to, uh, get to the venue and, and actually do the race.
- 25:10I Hate Talking: Uh, so that may have had something to do with it.
- 25:12I Hate Talking: But yes, to your point, there are often veterans or just people that have particular physical disabilities or, uh, challenges that, uh, will race with the team and.
- 25:24I Hate Talking: Uh, be in a wheelchair or need some sort of assistance from the rest of their team members in order to do these obstacles.
- 25:31I Hate Talking: Um, so I've seen them, you know, lift up these people over eight-foot walls and.
- 25:37I Hate Talking: Um, you know, through, uh, various obstacles so that they can, uh, complete the challenge as well.
- 25:43I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's really amazing.
- 25:44I Hate Talking: I've seen them, yeah, lift them and their wheelchairs even and all, or however they need help through these things.
- 25:51I Hate Talking: And I think it's beautiful and it's also an awesome challenge because God forbid if there were ever any major problems, and you do have to get out, especially even like with Hurricane Helene, that just happened, and everything, sometimes you do have to physically carry people or help people.
- 26:11I Hate Talking: And so showing that they're there to support everyone and their friends, even if they physically can't do it themselves, they're there to help them and we'll take care of them.
- 26:23I Hate Talking: Exactly, and I think that is somewhat of the same thing that I have in mind in just terms of physical preparedness, uh, as well as camaraderie, right, both of those things in mind as critical things for preparedness as well.
- 26:39I Hate Talking: But yeah, I am so impressed that you're able to do that and that you want to do it.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: I feel very safe around you because then you can help me through all that if we ever need to.
- 26:51I Hate Talking: But again, I think overall from the weekend, I'm most proud of you for stepping back and saying, I want to do this, but I know my children.
- 27:03I Hate Talking: Want me And being willing to put, I don't know what, how would you say?
- 27:09I Hate Talking: It's not ego, cause it's not like you had an ego, but like reevaluating your goals and saying, I want to complete the challenge.
- 27:15I Hate Talking: But I also want to be with my children.
- 27:19I Hate Talking: Precisely.
- 27:21I Hate Talking: So, and hopefully, Mr.
- 27:23I Hate Talking: Joe Deenna will understand, uh, that is the creator of Spartan race.
- 27:28I Hate Talking: Uh, I think perhaps he would.
- 27:31I Hate Talking: I think he has kids as well.
- 27:32I Hate Talking: So perhaps, uh, -- he would be understanding to that -- fact.
- 27:35I Hate Talking: Right.
- 27:36I Hate Talking: And you didn't even get your medal.
- 27:37I Hate Talking: You didn't.
- 27:38I Hate Talking: I don't think they gave it.
- 27:40I Hate Talking: Did you get a banana or anything?
- 27:42I Hate Talking: I know the little kids did.
- 27:43I Hate Talking: I saw you eating theirs.
- 27:44I Hate Talking: So did you not even get any of that then, right?
- 27:46I Hate Talking: So I did get all that stuff at the end of the course, uh, typically there will be that, uh, rolling mud and dunk wall, slip wall, and then a fire jump, and then the finish line.
- 27:57I Hate Talking: Uh, I was offered a medal because to their perspective, I had just finished the race, uh, which I had declined, uh, and then they offered it again and I declined again.
- 28:08I Hate Talking: uh, but I did get the t-shirt and the, uh, Refueling, uh, stuff, so the drink and the banana and all that at the end as well.
- 28:16I Hate Talking: OK.
- 28:17I Hate Talking: Yeah, so, that's awesome, and I think It's amazing to watch y'all and it's so exciting and it's just so cool afterwards.
- 28:27I Hate Talking: To hear your stories or the kids' stories and just seeing on your faces that relief of like, I did this.
- 28:36I Hate Talking: And so I liked asking everyone, like, what was the most challenging obstacle and what was the funnest obstacle?
- 28:42I Hate Talking: They all admitted, all the boys said the mud was the most challenging, and then they all had different most fun obstacles.
- 28:52I Hate Talking: Exactly, so we'll put a link to Spartan Race in the description along with uh maybe some descriptions of the various obstacles if you're interested in learning more.
- 29:02I Hate Talking: And uh if you are interested in hearing even more detailed experiences about particular race experiences uh from either this race or even previous races, let us know in the comments or send us an email or a text message and don't forget to like or subscribe.
