Transcript
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hello, welcome back everybody to the DanJohnUniversity.com podcast. This is
- 0:17Speaker 1: a special event for you today. This is my good
- 0:19Speaker 1: friend Andrew Gunn, or Gunny as he's known, and he's
- 0:22Speaker 1: the author of one of my actual favorite books. It's
- 0:26Speaker 1: about Percy Serity, and I said that right? You certainly did.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I always worry. And for those of you who have
- 0:32Speaker 1: been listening to the podcast for years, you know I
- 0:34Speaker 1: keep talking about this great Australian track and field coach,
- 0:37Speaker 1: which is, and the reason I think the story we're
- 0:40Speaker 1: about to share with you is interesting, is that when
- 0:43Speaker 1: I was young, when I first read my first track
- 0:45Speaker 1: and field books, Percy was considered a superstar in coaching.
- 0:51Speaker 1: What's interesting is he had very little respect here in
- 0:53Speaker 1: Australia for But throughout the rest of the world, he
- 0:56Speaker 1: was an innovator, an insightful guy. So many of the
- 1:01Speaker 1: things that many of you will take for normal, he
- 1:05Speaker 1: kind of was like a cutting edge of these things. Pioneer, yes.
- 1:09Speaker 1: A pioneer, yeah. And the other thing, too, is if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you like my work, for example, Easy Strength Omnibook, available
- 1:15Speaker 1: at danjohnuniversity.com slash bookstore, you'll find Percy is throughout the book.
- 1:21Speaker 1: So this is my friend Andrew. Andrew, this is... Our
- 1:25Speaker 1: gentle listeners.
- 1:26Speaker 2: This is a huge honor, Dan, to be here today.
- 1:29Speaker 3: And I'm going to say, Dan, you've been a huge
- 1:31Speaker 3: influence on my life.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And it was actually you who introduced me to Percy Serity.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Okay, now this is why this is an interesting story.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So I read about Percy in the Track and Field
- 1:41Speaker 1: Omni book, the 1971 version, the first edition, which is
- 1:45Speaker 1: also the book that made me want to go to
- 1:47Speaker 1: Utah State University.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So all these... So there's a whole story of my life.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Utah State University because of this book by J.K. Doherty.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But also in that book, I met Percy. In 1991
- 2:02Speaker 1: or 2, I went to the Denison University Library and
- 2:06Speaker 1: there was Larry Meyer's book, Training with Serenity, which hadn't
- 2:09Speaker 1: been out that long at the time. It's about 50
- 2:12Speaker 1: years old now, right? And I'm flipping through this book
- 2:15Speaker 1: and it's like, this is modern track and field 101.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So I fall in love with Percy. I let her
- 2:23Speaker 1: eat Pavel. Pavel talks about a thing called easy strength.
- 2:26Speaker 1: We didn't have the name there yet. And in the
- 2:30Speaker 1: back of my mind, I'm going, I know this. And
- 2:33Speaker 1: it was from Larry Meyer's book, Training with Serity. So
- 2:37Speaker 1: that's part one of our story. Now, part two picks
- 2:40Speaker 1: up with this young man.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Okay, well, at the age of 44, I was going
- 2:46Speaker 3: through a stage of my training where I wanted to
- 2:49Speaker 3: be the fastest, the strongest, the fittest man in my community.
- 2:54Speaker 3: But I kept getting injured. So one day I did
- 2:57Speaker 3: a simple Google search. I put in hill sprints, deadlifts,
- 3:04Speaker 3: and kettlebell swings. And then your name came up quite
- 3:08Speaker 3: quickly on the search. And ever since that time I
- 3:11Speaker 3: was following you, and I started, I joined the Dan
- 3:15Speaker 3: John Forum. And one day, someone was talking about Percy Serity.
- 3:20Speaker 3: There's a huge thread on Percy Serity.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I'm an Aussie.
- 3:24Speaker 3: I should know who he is. But I didn't know
- 3:26Speaker 3: who Percy was. I knew about Herb Elliott and those blokes.
- 3:29Speaker 3: But I didn't know who Percy was.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I felt very embarrassed.
- 3:32Speaker 3: So I started Googling Percy and Ernest. And I fell
- 3:36Speaker 3: in love with the story, his comeback, his resilience. And
- 3:40Speaker 3: it was actually you in your forum that opened up
- 3:43Speaker 3: my eyes to Percy Serity.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I find it amazing. Now, this is important, gentle listener,
- 3:51Speaker 1: because what I like about Gunny, is it okay? Yes,
- 3:56Speaker 1: of course. I love Gunny. Gunny was a rugby union player.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Very amateur player.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Very amateur, doesn't matter still. Hey, this is the internet.
- 4:04Speaker 2: You can be anybody you want.
- 4:06Speaker 1: But very often in my career anyway, people have come
- 4:10Speaker 1: to Percy's work through this kind of thing.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's always that way. You've got a rugby player, going
- 4:16Speaker 1: through a certain area of life, wanting to turn things around, Percy.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You got me, struggling, I've got two kids, I'm trying
- 4:23Speaker 1: to figure out, I gotta figure out a better way
- 4:25Speaker 1: to train, a smarter way to train. I find Percy.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And here we are, and so he did something that's
- 4:30Speaker 1: really important. He started researching Percy, and then what did
- 4:34Speaker 1: you do? Would you tell us a story about how
- 4:36Speaker 1: you went from researching to writing a book, and share
- 4:40Speaker 1: the details.
- 4:40Speaker 2: In the book if you don't mind.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You mean a lot to me.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Okay, so I'll try and make it very exhorting. So
- 4:45Speaker 3: when I first heard of Percy on the Dan John Forum,
- 4:49Speaker 3: after about two or three months, I had about 14
- 4:51Speaker 3: pages of information on Percy. I had bits of paper.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I had a Word document. I had all over the
- 4:58Speaker 3: place in a very haphazard manner. And I thought one stage,
- 5:02Speaker 3: one day I'm going to get together and compile this information.
- 5:06Speaker 2: And I did do that.
- 5:07Speaker 3: It took me about four or five hours to do
- 5:08Speaker 3: that one Sunday afternoon just before Christmas during COVID-2020. And also,
- 5:15Speaker 3: as I was going through the information, I couldn't believe
- 5:19Speaker 3: the nuggets of gold I had with me. You know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: this guy inspired the hell out of me. So what
- 5:26Speaker 3: I did was I tracked down an Australian author. His
- 5:29Speaker 3: name is Peter Fitzsimons. And I said to, I thought
- 5:33Speaker 3: to myself, I will email Peter my research, my information,
- 5:38Speaker 3: and get a professional to write about Percy Serity. Anyway,
- 5:42Speaker 3: that night, I had about three glasses of wine in me.
- 5:46Speaker 3: And I said to myself, after my third glass of wine,
- 5:49Speaker 3: I felt a very warm, fuzzy glow.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And that little voice in my head said, no, Gunny,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you wrote the damn book.
- 5:58Speaker 3: So that's what I did. I wrote the damn book
- 6:00Speaker 3: on Percy. It took me five years to write. And
- 6:03Speaker 3: it got published last year. Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And what's the name of the book and where can
- 6:06Speaker 1: my friends find it?
- 6:07Speaker 3: So it was Percy Serity, A Life Lessons from a
- 6:11Speaker 3: Remarkable Coach.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And you can get it on Amazon.com.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Through my publisher, Clark & Mackay, through Dimmicks in Australia,
- 6:20Speaker 3: the Queensland State Library, Walmart in America. It's all around
- 6:24Speaker 3: the world. It's distributed around the world now.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Okay, so what I love about the story is that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you're a kind of a, you know, we all go
- 6:33Speaker 1: through that little weird little, all of a sudden you
- 6:36Speaker 1: kind of hit, you got your business life, your family life,
- 6:39Speaker 1: your social life, all these lives collide and you're trying
- 6:42Speaker 1: to find a way out. So you say, well, To
- 6:44Speaker 1: find my way out, I'm going to be the fastest, strongest.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I failed.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden you find this guy, Percy.
- 6:54Speaker 1: So for those of you who are not going to
- 6:56Speaker 1: spend the money on his book or my book, I mean,
- 6:57Speaker 1: very simply it comes down to you go in, you
- 7:01Speaker 1: get the work done. Wouldn't you say you eat smart.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You don't eat crap food. You get your sleep. you
- 7:08Speaker 1: train hard, but it's all big rocks. It's all in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the cliche, the big rocks. You take care of business
- 7:16Speaker 1: and you find yourself a couple of years into it.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You walk, you sleep, you eat food, not garbage. You
- 7:28Speaker 1: wake up one day and you're like, I'm doing okay.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And so I think And I think that's probably the
- 7:37Speaker 1: gift I got from Percy. His vision of things, he's
- 7:40Speaker 1: old school, he's got an off-season, a pre-season, an end-season,
- 7:44Speaker 1: a competition or a peaking period.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Simple stuff.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Stuff I could tell you guys literally every week in
- 7:51Speaker 1: my podcast. Okay, now, the fun part for me is
- 7:55Speaker 1: that instead of doing a biography, which you could have done.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So for those of you who don't know, Percy went
- 8:00Speaker 1: through a rough time in his life.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Of course, yeah.
- 8:03Speaker 3: So what fascinated me about Percy was his story, his
- 8:06Speaker 3: background story. So most people who do recall Percy think
- 8:11Speaker 3: of him as a coach who coached Herb Elliott and John.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Landy and blokes like that. But what fascinated me was at.
- 8:19Speaker 3: The age of 43, Percy had just suffered his third
- 8:23Speaker 3: nervous breakdown.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He was given 12 months to live. He was an alcoholic.
- 8:29Speaker 2: He was a chain smoker.
- 8:31Speaker 1: He had.
- 8:32Speaker 3: He was bedridden, he hadn't worked for a year, he
- 8:34Speaker 3: couldn't get out of his bed. You know, he was
- 8:37Speaker 3: on the way out, he was gonna die early. And Percy,
- 8:40Speaker 3: through walking and changing his diet, cutting out cigarettes, being
- 8:48Speaker 3: well-read in regards to the ancient Greeks.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Really well-read.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well-read man.
- 8:53Speaker 3: He changed his life in his best years, but after
- 8:56Speaker 3: the age of 44. And the funny thing was, it's
- 8:59Speaker 3: funny because when I was 44, I thought my best
- 9:03Speaker 3: years were finished too. But now I'm 54, I feel
- 9:06Speaker 3: better than I did when I was 30 by following you, Dan,
- 9:10Speaker 3: and Percy, and your best years, no matter what you're
- 9:13Speaker 3: going through, no matter what financial hardship you're going through,
- 9:16Speaker 3: or which medical condition you're going through, Percy showed us
- 9:21Speaker 3: we can overcome those things by never giving up and
- 9:25Speaker 3: just backing ourselves.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And the fun thing about your book too is that
- 9:31Speaker 1: So I had some information. I had the Larry Myers book.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I had what other people said they did for his training.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I had some quotes. And there are some older films
- 9:39Speaker 1: you can see kind of online. But they're not. They're more,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know how it is. When someone's getting ready for
- 9:47Speaker 1: a movie, they show that 20-second clip. I mean, they're
- 9:51Speaker 1: not very good. Well, tell the audience about the research
- 9:57Speaker 1: you were able to do.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Okay. So. I was lucky enough to go to the
- 10:02Speaker 3: Victorian State Library, Melbourne.
- 10:06Speaker 2: It's the capital of Victoria.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And there's an archives room in the Victorian State Library,
- 10:11Speaker 3: the heritage room. And there was 36 boxes on Percy
- 10:16Speaker 3: Serity's essays and his writings, his poetry, his thoughts on training,
- 10:22Speaker 3: his thoughts on life, how to come back. And I
- 10:26Speaker 3: spent two glorious days researching all these boxes of information
- 10:31Speaker 3: on Percy.
- 10:32Speaker 2: And it was amazing, really. It was a great experience, Dan.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Car going boy.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I found that he was such a creative man.
- 10:40Speaker 3: His writings weren't about training as such. They were about
- 10:44Speaker 3: poetry writing, about the universe. about his love for the ocean,
- 10:49Speaker 3: about the female species. He had such a huge respect
- 10:52Speaker 3: for the female species. And about nature, about just the environment.
- 10:59Speaker 3: So I spent two glorious days there, writing down his quotes,
- 11:03Speaker 3: his philosophies, and transforming them into a book.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It's a fun read, I think. I enjoyed it immensely.
- 11:14Speaker 1: If you don't mind, I want to talk about your
- 11:18Speaker 1: friends and the original when you brought the book out. So,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I mean, I knew Gunny was a big deal, but
- 11:25Speaker 1: I didn't know how big a deal. So my favorite thing,
- 11:30Speaker 1: there's a couple of names I want you to drop.
- 11:32Speaker 1: First off, you teaching me about Harry Moffat. I'd like
- 11:35Speaker 1: to explain that to everybody. And I have some extremely
- 11:39Speaker 1: interesting stories about him. But the other thing is, if
- 11:41Speaker 1: you know the movie 300 and if you know Lord
- 11:44Speaker 1: of the Rings, one of his good friends is the
- 11:47Speaker 1: guy in 300 who covers his eye. That's his buddy.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Tell us about the people at the book signing.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Well, I'm very lucky to be in a walking group.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And once a week we catch up. We call ourselves
- 12:00Speaker 3: the BCAC group. And I was very lucky to be
- 12:04Speaker 3: invited to this group. I was one of the late
- 12:06Speaker 3: ones to be invited. There's 20 of us. And I'm
- 12:09Speaker 3: a big believer in men's health, and we catch up
- 12:12Speaker 3: once a week, we go for a walk, we walk, talk,
- 12:15Speaker 3: and have a coffee afterwards. And I guess there's a
- 12:18Speaker 3: few people in that group who have been very successful
- 12:21Speaker 3: in their lives. And in regards to Harry Moffat, Harry
- 12:26Speaker 3: was a guy I met through researching Percy, and he's
- 12:32Speaker 3: an SAS man in Australia.
- 12:35Speaker 2: He's a psychologist. And he's just a great fellow. He's
- 12:37Speaker 2: a very good man.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Harry was very generous with his time in regards to
- 12:43Speaker 3: learning about... He's got a company called the Stoughton Group,
- 12:47Speaker 3: which is based in Melbourne. Some of their clients are
- 12:50Speaker 3: huge football teams in Australia, AFL teams, NRL teams. And
- 12:55Speaker 3: I guess through this, I guess, journey of Percy, I've
- 13:00Speaker 3: discovered these amazing people.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah. So Harry Moffat wrote two books I've read. The
- 13:06Speaker 1: Fourth Pillar. Yep. So the Fourth Pillar is basically using
- 13:11Speaker 1: the lessons you learned in, was it 11 deployments?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Correct, correct.
- 13:16Speaker 1: 11 deployments using Percy's... Insights, Stoughtonism, which is a combination
- 13:24Speaker 1: of Stoic and Spartan, a Percy concept. And then very much,
- 13:29Speaker 1: the other thing I like about his, the importance he
- 13:32Speaker 1: has rules of community that you might have missed if you,
- 13:36Speaker 1: as an outsider, that really appealed to me. But then
- 13:40Speaker 1: Harry also has, Harry, my mistake, has another book called
- 13:44Speaker 1: Eleven Bats. And it's about his deployments and playing cricket
- 13:48Speaker 1: on all these deployments. And I've got to tell you,
- 13:51Speaker 1: after you buy and read your book, I would suggest,
- 13:55Speaker 1: especially The Fourth Pillar. It's a great book. I'm afraid
- 14:00Speaker 1: my American audience might not understand some of the nuances
- 14:02Speaker 1: of the cricket stuff, but you would understand the deployment concepts.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And then if you don't mind, what's the young man's
- 14:08Speaker 1: name who was in 300 and in Lord of the Rings?
- 14:10Speaker 2: David Wenham. He's one of the many people in our group.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I was telling you earlier, but When the movie 300
- 14:18Speaker 1: came out, everyone fell in love with abs and blood.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But I always thought that David's character, the person who
- 14:26Speaker 1: survives to tell the story, I thought that was, I
- 14:29Speaker 1: wouldn't say, beyond the ab wall, beyond the six-pack abs
- 14:37Speaker 1: and all that, and all the blood and gore, that,
- 14:40Speaker 1: the guy who survives and thrives, that's something I thought
- 14:43Speaker 1: that was really important. And of course, the guy who
- 14:46Speaker 1: trained the athlete actors in that, Mark Twight, was a
- 14:51Speaker 1: good friend of mine, is a good friend of mine.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And he came out and he talked, just before the
- 14:56Speaker 1: movie came out, he talked to my school. I brought
- 14:58Speaker 1: him in. And it's weird because I had a counselor
- 15:01Speaker 1: who said, why would the students want to hear about
- 15:04Speaker 1: a movie? And I'm like, you know, I don't know
- 15:08Speaker 1: if the phrase translates, but boy, did you miss that ball.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah, 300 was kind of a big deal. And, you know,
- 15:16Speaker 1: Mark was talking about their nutrition and their training. And
- 15:19Speaker 1: that was all great. But David's story in there is
- 15:23Speaker 1: so crucial. And for those of you who might have missed,
- 15:27Speaker 1: if you don't mind me just taking a moment here,
- 15:31Speaker 1: as we're doing this, we're right around the anniversary of 9-11.
- 15:35Speaker 1: That was 25 years ago. And I think what's happening
- 15:37Speaker 1: is a lot of Americans are, are missing the pre-911
- 15:41Speaker 1: America versus what we have now. And when 300 and Troy,
- 15:47Speaker 1: those movies hit, those movies really seemed to resonate with
- 15:51Speaker 1: this sudden militarization we had to have as a country.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Even though I don't think we really did, we certainly
- 15:59Speaker 1: didn't follow the lifeline of how to deal with the situation.
- 16:04Speaker 1: But it was just wonderful that you're his friend, Moffat, too.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I mean, these are great authors that a lot of
- 16:15Speaker 1: us are missing in our field. Because I think Fourth
- 16:17Speaker 1: Pillar and your book, I mean, those are great book-ed books.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And so are your books.
- 16:22Speaker 2: 40 Years with a Whistle. Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Well, thank you. That means the world to me. So
- 16:30Speaker 1: you told me that you found yourself at about age
- 16:33Speaker 1: 44 kind of chasing too many rabbits.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Correct, correct.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Tell me about the rabbits you're chasing now. Right, yeah.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Perhaps I'm chasing now or back then?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah, right now.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Right now.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Right now, I want to, well, funny you said that,
- 16:44Speaker 3: I'm actually working on my second book. And it's actually
- 16:47Speaker 3: more a bit of a men's health feel to it.
- 16:50Speaker 3: I want to try to, because I've got such a
- 16:53Speaker 3: great benefit out of my walking group, I want all
- 16:57Speaker 3: men to have the same sort of connection with their,
- 17:00Speaker 3: I think it's very.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Important for men to get together.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:03Speaker 3: In groups, like-minded men to get together once a week, walk, talk,
- 17:09Speaker 3: have a coffee afterwards.
- 17:10Speaker 2: So I think, yeah, you get so much energy out
- 17:11Speaker 2: of that. So I'm trying to, hopefully, my book will
- 17:15Speaker 2: be able to.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Incorporate those ideas into a broader community, into out there somehow.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So I'm kind of getting there.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I want to add one thing. I get this from
- 17:26Speaker 1: my friend Maureen. She runs the Senior Centre where I
- 17:29Speaker 1: hang out. And she says, for lifelong, to be alive
- 17:35Speaker 1: a long time, not just living, but alive, she says
- 17:39Speaker 1: it's mobility and community. And mobility is walking and community
- 17:43Speaker 1: is what you're talking about.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Every five days a week, I have an intentional community
- 17:50Speaker 1: that I work out with. People show up to train
- 17:52Speaker 1: with me. I mean, you know one of them, Erica,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and there's many others. But they come together. We train.
- 17:59Speaker 1: We walk. We go out and get coffee. We talk.
- 18:02Speaker 1: We celebrate each other's events of life. And there's something
- 18:07Speaker 1: about that that is missing. And I agree. I agree.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I couldn't agree more. I think you're nailing it. You know,
- 18:14Speaker 1: we were talking on the way up here. So it
- 18:18Speaker 1: turns out because of a lawsuit that I have college
- 18:22Speaker 1: eligibility now. And I had this thought about going back
- 18:27Speaker 1: to school. And then I caught myself because I realized
- 18:30Speaker 1: that how many rabbits can I chase at my age? Yes, yes, yes.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And I thought to myself, I could, you know, get
- 18:36Speaker 1: back in the weight room, could get the weight back on,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I could throw the discus, but then I do want
- 18:42Speaker 1: to be around for my grandchildren. Good, yeah. So one
- 18:44Speaker 1: of the great things about his story, and I want
- 18:45Speaker 1: to make sure I emphasize this again, when 44, was
- 18:49Speaker 1: 44 the age that... 44, yes, yes. So at age 44,
- 18:53Speaker 1: he was going to chase all these rabbits. Yes, yes, yes.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And when you decided to chase the Percy book... Yep.
- 19:00Speaker 1: And your walking community, among other things. Absolutely. Now you
- 19:04Speaker 1: have a book. Correct. It's at Walmart. It's at Amazon. Amazon, yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 1: You're in a community with some very famous people. And
- 19:12Speaker 1: by the way, the other whole bunch of former professional
- 19:15Speaker 1: athletes are in the group with them too. It's a
- 19:17Speaker 1: who's who. It's very impressive. And the idea, when you
- 19:22Speaker 1: decide to do this.
- 19:25Speaker 1: And go, I'm going to go after that rabbit, good
- 19:28Speaker 1: things tend to happen.
- 19:29Speaker 2: That's right. As you always say, Dan, chase one rabbit
- 19:32Speaker 2: at a time. Chase one at a time.
- 19:34Speaker 1: One at a time.
- 19:34Speaker 3: And I think I was making the mistake in my
- 19:37Speaker 3: 40s trying to chase too many rabbits. And it was
- 19:40Speaker 3: actually you who got me into thinking through.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Your forum, just chase one rabbit at a time.
- 19:46Speaker 1: That's good.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I think that's kind of, that's just a game changer
- 19:48Speaker 2: for me.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Hey, do you have anything else you'd like to add?
- 19:52Speaker 3: I just think, just going back to Percy Serity, I
- 19:55Speaker 3: know there's people out there who are probably going through
- 19:58Speaker 3: so many different things right now. It can be anything,
- 20:01Speaker 3: be financial, be physical or mental, that Percy went through
- 20:05Speaker 3: all those things and he was able to overcome.
- 20:10Speaker 3: So many setbacks and still achieve the most remarkable thing.
- 20:14Speaker 3: So I think as long as you hang in there
- 20:17Speaker 3: and never give up and just think positive thoughts, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 3: the world is your oyster.
- 20:22Speaker 1: So true. So true. Yeah. I mean, the problem with
- 20:28Speaker 1: what you said is it's so simple. And I think
- 20:30Speaker 1: sometimes that gets lost, especially in the fitness industry, which
- 20:34Speaker 1: I almost say sometimes I begrudgingly am involved in because
- 20:38Speaker 1: it's hard sometimes. Yeah. You know, I'm not sexy. I'm
- 20:42Speaker 1: not shiny. You know what I mean?
- 20:44Speaker 2: Of course, of course.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Most of my advice is boring. And most of the time,
- 20:52Speaker 1: when I'm doing a workshop, usually I get this. There
- 20:55Speaker 1: we go. But yeah, it's that stuff that you miss.
- 20:59Speaker 1: And I'm really happy to hear where your focus is
- 21:02Speaker 1: right now. And good luck on the book. Okay, before
- 21:05Speaker 1: we go, make sure we understand who we're talking about.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Percy Seary.
- 21:10Speaker 1: P-E-R-C-Y-C-E-R-U-T-T-Y.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Correct, correct.
- 21:17Speaker 1: And go to Amazon. Look for Andrew Gunn. Yep. G-U-N-N.
- 21:24Speaker 1: It'll be in there. It's Dan John, two thumbs up.
- 21:29Speaker 1: See you at the... I'm waiting for the movie to
- 21:32Speaker 1: come out. It's going to be great.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Hopefully.
- 21:33Speaker 2: There should be a movie about this boy.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I think so. It'll be me and Brad Pitt. Brad
- 21:39Speaker 1: Pitt will be the young Percy. I'll be the older.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Good, good, good.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I wasn't supposed to share that information, but he was
- 21:48Speaker 1: a remarkable coach. And I'll say it still interests me
- 21:52Speaker 1: so much that the place on the planet he's probably
- 21:55Speaker 1: least appreciated is.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Australia.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Australia.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Oh, no. It's a shame.
- 22:00Speaker 1: So when I was in high school, I had a buddy,
- 22:04Speaker 1: and his name was Jesus of Nazareth.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yep.
- 22:06Speaker 1: And he said, Dan, you can't be a prophet in
- 22:08Speaker 1: your own town. And sometimes that's what happens. Very true,
- 22:13Speaker 1: very true. Yeah, yeah. We've talked about that many times
- 22:17Speaker 1: in my career. My own children would not listen to
- 22:20Speaker 1: me when it came to throwing the discus and shot.
- 22:23Speaker 1: So I can't help you. Anything else you want to add?
- 22:26Speaker 2: No, that's all.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I just want to say thank you to you, Dan,
- 22:30Speaker 3: because you've been a huge influence in my life. And
- 22:33Speaker 3: I can't say that enough to the people out there
- 22:35Speaker 3: is that it was actually you who's changed my training.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I'm 54 years of age, I feel much younger. I
- 22:42Speaker 3: may look 60, but I definitely feel younger. And it
- 22:46Speaker 3: was you, Dan, and I want to thank you for.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Your men's health awareness too.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 22:52Speaker 2: And for what you do.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Thank you. Well, folks, there you go. Andrew Gunn, G-U-N-N,
- 22:59Speaker 1: Percy Serity. It's available on Amazon, and if you're lucky
- 23:02Speaker 1: enough to live in certain parts of Australia... You can
- 23:04Speaker 1: go to a bookstore and get it. And until next time, folks,
- 23:07Speaker 1: let's all keep on lifting and learning, okay? Thank you.
