- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you so much for taking some time out of your day to spend with me.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And today I'm going to be talking about life's challenges, changes, and transitions.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I know for me personally, I've been sort of edging into different transitions in life as my kids have started to grow older and starting to leave the house.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I've definitely been been facing some transitions.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You know, and the truth is is sometimes we are really content with where we are in life and we actually resist certain making certain life decisions or changes.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and sometimes we embrace them, you know, the changing careers, um, getting married, moving, having kids.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Those are those are choices that we might make that would move us into a big life transition.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And sometimes there are transitions and challenges and changes that happen that we don't have control over, such as a loss, you know, of a loved one, for instance, a loss of a pet.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, sometimes our we don't, it's not a choice to change careers, sometimes it's forced upon us.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: So the point is that yes, sometimes we actively choose change and sometimes it is upon us.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Either way, change can be overwhelming.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And why?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Because it sends us outside of our comfort zone, it puts us into this new growth zone area uh where we might feel uncertain about how things are gonna unfold.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And sometimes that uncertainty can create some stress, sometimes it can also create some anxiousness and some anxiety.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And if we stay in that stress and anxiety for a cr a greater period of time, that can actually lead to those feelings of overwhelm.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Um, and especially if we have certain changes that are sudden and big, like the loss of a loved one, those are or a sudden illness, for instance, those are unanticipated.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And so there are times when those transitions and life's challenges and changes kind of hit us almost like a Mac truck, you know, we don't know that it's even coming.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: It's not something that we could have avoided.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: That can be really overwhelming in and of itself.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, one of the things that we will ask is, well, what even counts as a life change?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Well, it's really anything that significantly affects how we've how we've been showing up and and what's been happening in our world, right?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So a life change could be a child going off to school or a child moving out of the house, you know, after being at home for all those years.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, sometimes we even experience what we would refer to as as sleeper transitions, where they occur gradually over time.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Um, those transitions could include marriages where over time you're transitioning, you're growing apart from your partner, and that's what what is a transition that's happening that eventually could lead into um the eventual dissolution of your marriage, but it's a gradual change, it's a gradual life transition.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Some life transitions are actually a great thing.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, when we have these periods in our life where we're making these big changes and and decisions for ourselves, such as maybe going off to college or, you know, changing jobs or potentially um getting married or having kids.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Those are great life transitions.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: They inspire us to continue moving forward.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So even though there might be some anxiety that comes with it, we're actually we're actually excited about it at the same time.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And they can actually serve as catalysts to help us maybe reassess our goals or add to our goals and encourage us to continue to move forward and take steps to move ourselves forward, um, not just from a professional standpoint, but from a personal standpoint.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: So they're not all bad, but either way, we have to learn how to cope with them.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So one of the things that we can do when we're going through a transition is to recognize and acknowledge that it is taking place.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: So often, if it is a transition that we weren't anticipating or doesn't feel so great, there would there might be a tendency to avoid that experience altogether and to pretend it's not happening, but acknowledge that it's changing place or taking place.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Even when we make these happy changes, making sure that we're acknowledging like this is a big deal.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: It's a big deal to move.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Like for me, it was a big deal to have my first child and move from this, you know, adult person who was just myself and my partner, and now I'm responsible for another human being.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Acknowledging that that change is taking place is so important, especially for new parents.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: It's a big one.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Embrace the change as an opportunity to grow and learn.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, one of my clients recently used the phrase with me, um, obstacles become opportunities.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And the same thing happens with transitions.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Again, good transitions, hard transitions.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Either way, it's about using that opportunity to continue to grow and learn because you are stepping outside of your comfort zone with any type of transition.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Keeping those goals in mind, having clear, realistic goals for yourself makes it easier to take action.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: The other thing that I would say when we're going through life's transitions is remembering what your personal value system is.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Coming home to your values, using those as your guideposts can be really helpful when you're going through a transition.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Again, it doesn't matter if we're talking positive or negative here.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: It's just transitions are a time of change, and you making sure that you're constantly referring back to your own core identity, your own values, your own belief system, that can be a real uh positive way to guide yourself.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Building in and engaging with your support system is really helpful when you're going through transition.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Coping with transition can be a lot easier when you have that support system.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: And if you are feeling overwhelmed, having either, you know, family, friends, a coach to help support you as you go through that can be really vital in continuing to move yourself forward.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Don't run away from the discomfort is another way that, you know, a great tip.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: As difficult it may seem, it's about practicing mindfulness, being present, allowing yourself to experience what's happening right now, which gives you permission to experience the feelings and emotions that you're having, and utilizing those emotions to be communicators of what it is that you're needing and wanting, and then taking action towards those things.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And of course, taking care of yourself.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Self-care when you're going through a significant change in life, again, doesn't matter if it's positive or negative, self-care and making sure that you are um honoring what it is that you're needing is absolutely important when you're going through a change.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Um one thing that people will say is that uh change is the one constant in life.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So what really counts and what really helps navigate these transitions is uh increasing our resiliency factor, uh making sure that we are really truly trusting ourselves and um giving ourselves permission to practice self-compassion as we go through transitions.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: There again are those uncertain moments, and it's being really kind to oneself, overjudging oneself as you go through the transition.
