Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Addressing the Issue of Overactive Nervous System Response to Circumstances
Transcript
- 0:00Whenever anything happens in the world, the senses capture the
- 0:04vibrations and send them up the nervous channels to the brain,
- 0:07where they are interpreted and responded to.
- 0:11When the nervous system is sensitive and overly responsive,
- 0:15it may vibrate continuously and not let up.
- 0:19This creates an uncomfortable feeling that makes the
- 0:21individual nervous or jumpy, wound up or overly reactive.
- 0:27This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to calmly view
- 0:32whatever the circumstance is and respond to it calmly and in the
- 0:36most effective manner. This is at some point a closed
- 0:40loop where the individual feels trapped and under pressure and
- 0:45cannot find any way out. The first step to freeing
- 0:50oneself from this over excitement of the nerves is to
- 0:53become aware of it. And then to take steps to
- 0:57distance oneself from it and eventually bring it to a state
- 1:02of quiet or calm. The separation of the witness
- 1:06consciousness from the external being is a powerful option to
- 1:09accomplish this. There are also specific interim
- 1:13methods that can be employed to aid the seeker in calming the
- 1:17nerves to break the cycle of disturbance.
- 1:22For instance, taking deep breaths, reciting A mantra,
- 1:27concentrating on some other point or issue, spending time in
- 1:32nature, perhaps a forest or along a seashore.
- 1:37Some people find it useful to do hata, yoga, asanas or some form
- 1:41of martial arts, or even just sit quietly, read and drink tea.
- 1:48Whatever works to bring the nervous energy back into balance
- 1:52will help the seeker get to a place where it becomes
- 1:55manageable. Once the seeker works out a
- 1:58procedure that succeeds in calming the nerves, he can begin
- 2:02to develop the insight to hopefully avoid or at least
- 2:06reduce the nervous excitement when future provocations come
- 2:10along. The key is to appreciate that
- 2:13one is not the external personality but the psychic
- 2:17being, the sole entity, so that whatever occurs to the external
- 2:22being is not to be accepted if it interferes with the sadhna.
- 2:28Srioro Bindu observes quote. The main difficulty seems to be
- 2:33that you are too subject to an excitement of the nerves.
- 2:37It is only by bringing quietude and calm into the whole being
- 2:41that a steady progress in the Sadhna can be assured.
- 2:45The first thing to be done in order to recover is to stop
- 2:48yielding to the attack of the nerves.
- 2:51The more you yield and identify yourself with these ideas and
- 2:55feelings, the more they increase.
