- 0:00[ on-hold music] Welcome back to The Most Important Question Today where in just a couple minutes or less, we apply the Actually Pro-Life Principles to a news headline, and then help you answer the most important question, "What can I do?"
- 0:18[ on-hold music] If you live in the US, you probably went to work sick at least once this year. You waited out, on the one hand, your fever, on the other, your rent. You went in.
- 0:35Everybody's done it. But here's a story for you. Senator Mitch McConnell fell in June. He was away from the Senate, missing in action for three whole months.
- 0:45On September 14th, he was wheeled back in and he voted, and his seat was exactly where he left it, which is good. That is exactly what should happen to anybody whose body breaks, how ever old they are.
- 0:56Time off, your job's still there when you get back. But back when he was a living, conscious being, Mitch voted eight times to keep that right away from you. Eight roll calls, 1991 to 2022.
- 1:09In 2020, the Senate voted to provide Americans with paid sick time and paid leave so that they could address their own health needs. Mitch, of course, voted no.
- 1:18Six years later, he addressed his own health needs for three months with zero explanation. Lots of memes, but zero explanation.
- 1:26Among the lowest paid tenth of people in the US who work for private employers, nearly six in ten don't get one paid sick day. Here's the good news, though. In 1993, Mitch voted against the Family and Medical Leave Act.
- 1:40The vote was seventy-one to twenty-seven, I think. Mitch McConnell lost. That law is why you can have a baby or bury your mom or whatever and still have a job when you come back.
- 1:52Mitch McConnell lost, and you got something nice, which is not something we get to say very often. Here's the better news. The paid version of that bill already exists on paper.
- 2:01It's called the Family Act, and it's H.R.5390. If you're feeling up to it, call your senator. Do the thing. [on-hold music] Thanks for listening.
